48 foot gunboat catamaran

The first, most critical thing to know about boatbuilder Peter Johnstone-who’s now twice entrusted his vision of the ideal offshore cruising catamaran to the highly capable design team of Gino Morrelli and Pete Melvin-is that he absolutely loves to sail. We’re not talking mere infatuation. What we have with Mr. Johnstone is an all-consuming passion for the art and science of propelling waterborne craft by the cleanest fuel of all, a fresh breeze.

When he decided to take his young family cruising a few years ago, Johnstone worked backward from a very simple question: What’s going to be the most fun to sail? Safety, reliability, and seaworthiness would all need to be inherent parts of the solution, of course, but that central tenet was non-negotiable. Why go cruising under sail, he reasoned, if sailing wasn’t going to be a focal point of the exercise?

Johnstone had a pretty good idea of what he was looking for: a big, powerful, no-holds-barred catamaran built of the latest, lightest materials, with ample accommodations, and manageable by a shorthanded crew. Ultimately, he formed his own company to produce such a vessel. When the seagoing Johnstones finally set sail for the Caribbean, they did so on the M&M-designed, South African-built Gunboat 62 Tribe. After returning from his 15-month cruise, Johnstone rolled up his sleeves and got back to boatbuilding in earnest. The Gunboat 48 is the company’s second model in production, and the next will be-yikes-an 80-footer, currently under construction.

Conceptually, the 48 hasn’t wandered far from the precedents established on its larger sibling. The deck layout is centered around a forward cockpit accessed through a door that separates it from the central bridgedeck saloon/wheelhouse/galley. The forward cockpit, as Johnstone acknowledges, wasn’t an original Gunboat idea; noted multihull designer Chris White successfully employed it on his Atlantic series of cruising cats. But it works well on the Gunboat, with almost all the relevant running rigging and sailhandling devices-including a suite of Harken blocks and winches and an array of Spinlock clutches and jammers-stationed at chest level near the base of the towering carbon-fiber spar.

The steering wheel, engine controls, chart plotter, and instruments are a couple of short steps away, tucked just inside the aforementioned front door. So, too, is a handsome folding dining table with veneers of Brazilian mahogany fronting a forward-facing settee that’s plenty inviting when the boat is coursing along under the Raymarine autopilot. When you’re peering out the front and side windows, it’s almost like watching a sailing movie on a big screen, and it’s a very enjoyable view.

In fact, the entire free flowing deck layout maximizes the use of space and is very well thought out. Moving aft, the bridgedeck leads to a roomy “back porch” for dining or drinks, and it’s functional, too, with easy access to the dinghy davits and the molded, transom-mounted steps providing access to the swim ladder and to the twin Westerbeke 35-horsepower Universal diesels.

Below, there’s a pair of staterooms complete with queen-size berths, and a third is equipped with a single. There are also two heads with showers, both stationed forward in the respective hulls.

As befitting a sailboat with a seven-figure price tag, the overall build quality of the vacuum-bagged, oven-cured monocoque hull and deck-a foam sandwich utilizing epoxy, biaxial and unidirectional glass, Kevlar, and carbon fiber-is quite phenomenal. The daggerboards and lifting rudders are also carbon fiber, as are the stringers, ring frames, and crossbeams.

There’s nothing else out there quite like a Gunboat. Peter Johnstone set out to build what designer Bill Lee has called a “hot-rod cruiser,” and he certainly succeeded.

Best bluewater multihulls: Gunboat 48

  • Toby Hodges
  • November 18, 2021

When you say performance bluewater multihull, the name Gunboat often springs to mind. Toby Hodges and Francois Tregouet selected the Gunboat 48 as their pick of the bunch

Best bluewater multihulls Gunboat 48

Gunboat is the forerunner of the ongoing current trend for fast composite carbon catamarans. The Gunboat 48 is a very popular model, despite only a handful being made – though huge numbers of any Gunboat model do not really exist.

It is the boat that surfing megastar, John John Florence selected for a beautifully shot travelogue-style video series, which he named after his Gunboat 48 Vela.

When Peter Johnstone conceived the first Gunboat 62 Tribe over 20 years ago, spawned from the discomfort his family felt sailing a large monohull, little did he know he would start a cult for cool cruising cats that can outpace maxis on a race course and have the legs to avoid a storm.

Veteran multihull designers Morrelli & Melvin followed up with this smaller model, more manageable for an owner-driver yet still capable of up to 300-400 mile days.

A rare breed, just six 48s were built between 2004 and 2009. Oh, to have a spare €1.3m right now… one of them is actually on the market.

Your team delivered on every mark. You’ve got an amazing broker in Mark Wattrus and I’m confident you will have continued success moving forward together. He was available 24/7 whenever I had questions. We had a great initial visit on the boat and his marketing plan and photos were superb

I bought a yacht that I had never seen. I did this because I trusted my broker Andrew Holland. It was not an easy job for Andrew, as I am an experienced boat builder and owner of previous yachts, but work in West Africa. Imagine how hard it was to communicate what I was looking for. Andrew came up with exactly what I wanted. He dealt with time delays, all my questions at odd hours, and was there for the survey. He reported honestly and professionally. After buying the yacht, I arrived at the boat on a Sunday night, after dark, after travelling from West Africa to the Caribbean, and found it was better than expected. He never pulled punches and made me aware of shortfalls. I expected to spend my one month leave working on the boat, but actually spent less than one week, and was able to spend 3 weeks sailing – wonderful bonus.

Thank you Andrew for putting up with all my questions, all my worries and all my crazy out of the time zone concerns – you were totally professional, but also I know that if and when we meet up, it will be like a friend finally meeting. You are always welcome on Aseka.

— Beverly Cory

Outstanding company with professional subject matter experts. If I were to buy or sell cruising sailboat, particularly a catamaran, Andrew would be my go to broker.

I have been sailing since I was a child and attended Massachusetts Maritime Academy. But when my wife and I began the process of purchasing an ocean cruising/racing catamaran, I realized that this is a world unto itself. Obviously, we needed to find someone knowledgeable to help us make an informed decision. More importantly, we needed someone honest and willing to put our interests before his or her own. I was lucky to work with Phil Berman at The Multihull Company. He repeatedly shunned the fast buck, choosing instead to work the long road to connect us with the “perfect boat”. I would be glad to recommend Phil and his company to anyone planning to purchase or sell a performance sailing machine.

— Eric Boutiette

Andrew Hodgdon was our broker when we bought our 2018 Lagoon 450F in Antigua in April 2922. He provided great service and was very attentive to our needs. We would highly recommend Andrew and the Multihull Company.

C-CAT48-4

Description

One of my favourite performance catamaran designs is the Gunboat 48. They only ever built six of them, and they still change hands for well into 7 figures, so it has always surprised me that no-one has tried to fill this market gap. Outremer and Marsaudon have a 45 and a 42 respectively – slightly smaller, and they seem to sell well.

Well, no-one up until now that is, as the Italian yard C-Catamarans is launching the C- 48 and she looks like she might clean up in this sector of the market. This Italian yard has a history of spotting an opportunity. They successfully launched a 37 footer: another market that has been forgotten by the major manufacturers.

This Italian boat is competing with the likes of the Windelo 50 catamaran in the performance cruising market. It’s a busy market.

The C-Cat 37 was designed by Marc Lombard, one of our favourite architects, and is a neat entry level cat. They plan to launch a range of high performance, top of the range catamarans: a 62 footer, a 56 footer and the C-Cat 48. Exciting stuff and they’ll be going up against the likes of HH, Icecat, Kinetic, Balance, O Yachts and even Gunboat.

This fast cat is the same length as the Bali 4.8 but that is where the similarities finish. This catamaran is all about safe performance.

  • The look! This is a fantastic looking boat: Italian styling at its best
  • The combination of twin aft helms and the interior helm station means that you get the best of both worlds: maximum sailing feel and protection when the weather turns nasty.
  • With an SA / D ratio over 26, this is a fast, light boat along the lines of an Outremer (with more living space thanks to the Open design)
  • Pretty good value compared to the competition
  • Comar Yachts have plenty of experience in building boats.
  • The quality of the interior finish is a cut above the competition.
  • With twin 35 HP engines, she seems underpowered when the wind dies. I am guessing there will be an option to upgrade to more power here.
  • With only 300 litres of fresh water capacity, you are going to need a water maker
  • The fuel tanks are fairly modest too (2x 130 L). But then again, you should be sailing on this boat most of the time if you keep the weight off and your sail locker is full.
  • Aft helms. They always go in the pros and the cons, don’ t they? Great for maximum sailing feel when the C-Cat 48 accelerates, but you are exposed back there if it blows up. There is a great option for an inside wheel at the nav station as well. That would be top of my options list after the gennaker, Code 0 and water maker.

The Team Who Love Fast Cats The C-Cat 48 was designed by the Yacht Design Collective (François Perus and Romain Scolari) who are the team behind the ITA 14.99. It’s a catamaran that has been inspired by the likes of the Gunboat 60 and the Outremer 4X, but also has a healthy serving of Italian styling. This 48 footer  has been designed to cross oceans at speed in safety and comfort. She is built in Fiumicino, about an hour from Rome at the C-Catamarans yard.

She draws many design cues from her smaller sister, the C-Cat 37.

The entire cockpit and saloon is designed along the “Open” lines so loved by Marc Lombard, the designer of the smaller boat. You are protected by a large bimini with the aft cockpit and the saloon on the same level, separated by a large sliding door which connects the 2 spaces into one large open living area.

Best of Both Worlds? The C-Cat 48 is a catamaran for sailors along the lines of a Nautitech or a classic Catana with twin aft helms at the stern and all the running rigging led back so that you can manage the boat  without having to leave the aft cockpit. She’s been designed for short handed crews. The only sails that you will need to deal with forward are the light wind sails (gennaker, Code 0 and so on). There is a Harken winch on the mast to help you.

Of course, the main concern for most with sporty aft helms is protection and safety in bad weather. The C-Cat 48 has an option for an additional interior helm station with an interior wheel which gives you the best of both worlds. I can only think of Kinetic who offer a similar solution, and they are in the 7 figure price bracket

The ride is smooth like an Outremer, with a high bridge-deck and low Displacement to Length ratio. This cat should get you out of trouble quickly. They have though about weight distribution carefully. The anchor is set back just forward of the mast for instance, to centralise the weight.

A Powerful Sail Plan The SA / D ratio sits at over 26 with the mainsail and self tacking jib flying. There is also a genoa and options for a gennaker, code 0 and parasailor /Spinnaker. That should put the C – Cat 48 at the top of the performance cruiser category along with the likes of the Balance 482 (probably the closest competition?) There are also options for a carbon mast and longeron which will help you safely fly more sail area.

Modern and efficient, the C-Cat 48 is equipped with C-Foil daggerboards which should give you a bit of lift at speed.

This catamaran is constructed with a sandwich laminate structure infused with multiaxial fabrics and an epoxy-vinyl matrix. The bulkheads are made of composite with local carbon reinforcements in higher stress areas. She’s pretty rigid which all helps to improve the performance of this catamaran.

In the interior, there are 2 customizable options available: Antigua: a cleaner, sportier finish if weight reduction is your top priority, and St.Barth for a more luxurious, comfortable finish, albeit with some weight penalty.

The C-Cat 48 is one of the most exciting designs to come out in the performance cruising category. It’s great to see this Italian catamaran out on the water. I’ll be queueing up for a test sail!

How much does a C-Cat 48 Cost? What is the price? Well, as always, we will cover ourselves by saying that it depends on the options you go for, but a very nice example will set you back around €750k plus taxes.

But don’t worry if you leave the helm to the autopilot or if the wind gets stronger: the Outremer 45 is the most forgiving of catamarans. Peace of mind while cruising is non-negotiable on an Outremer, including on this single-handed catamaran.

Ideal sailing ergonomics

All maneuvers are accessible from the helm station, located at the center of the boat. With a perfect view of the four corners of the catamaran and the sails, single-handed maneuvering is child’s play! After hoisting the mainsail on your own, using the electric winch in front of you, trimming and fine-tuning your sails with the mainsail and solent sheets, take the tiller, comfortably installed in the ergonomic seat, to enjoy unique steering pleasure. Returning to port, the engine controls and windlass are also within easy reach, guaranteeing seemless maneuvering.

Unmatched view of the horizon

The 360° view from the saloon and cockpit of this blue water catamaran provides exceptional visibility of the water and the surrounding environment, contributing greatly to onboard comfort. Aboard the Outremer 45, whether sitting or standing, inside or outside, the vision is perfect. A crucial factor for serene cruising! No need to climb on deck to scan the horizon, night watches will never have seemed as comfortable as at the chart table!

Easy access

The very low boom allows easy access to the mainsail, lowers the sail’s center of effort and optimizes performance and comfort at sea. Access to the coachroof is made simple with just one step near the mast, and even the youngest can take part in maneuvers under the watchful eye of the skipper. When it’s time to reef or stow the sail, no acrobatics are required, and you stay safe. All these well-thought elements make the Outremer 45 the ideal catamaran for either beginners or a single-person crew.

Meet “Falcor,” The 48-Foot, $1.7mil Gunboat John John Florence Sailed To Jaws

Next stop the billabong pro in tahiti.

Back in September of last year, professional backcountry snowboarder and sailing enthusiast Travis Rice, accompanied by Ian Walsh, filmed a 2,500 nautical mile journey from Tahiti to Hawaii, on the back of his 48-foot Gunboat catamaran, Falcor * (which you can see above).

According to reports, as Falcor landed on the idyllic Hawaiian shores, surfing’s 2x and current World Champion John John Florence was there, shiny briefcase in hand, prepared to purchase the 48-foot vessel, which without Rice’s improvements runs a cool $1.68 million.

Travis (reportedly) stepped off the boat, took the shiny briefcase, handed John the keys (wait… do sailboats have keys?) and strolled gently into that warm Honolulu night.

Say hello to John’s not-so-little slice of heaven.

Photography

Tim McKenna

It’s worth noting that even the most devoted JJF fan would never know of  Falcor  from eitherof his Instagram accounts. That John Florence is the owner of this gorgeous, wind-powered yacht and has forsaken the chance to flaunt it a la classic cinematic depictions of the  nouveau riche –popping bubbly for the camera, flanked by long-stemmed Hawaiian flowers, generally reveling in his success — is sure, a little disappointing. But it’s rather indicative of Florence’s understated civilian character out of a contest singlet.

More than the pursuit’s implied status, John has been long been intrigued by the freedom of the act of sailing itself. In his 2016 video series,  Twelve , John declared, “My ultimate goal with sailing is to be able to travel fast, cover long distances, and go surfing. I want to combine the two.”

Well, with the help of his new 48-foot cat, John has been doing just that.

His first major trip on Falcor was an inter-island cruise to Maui, for the Jaws swell back in January. Looking at the most promising system of the 17/18 season, John packed his trusty Green Iguana gun, enlisted a few of his hardest charging comrades, and set sail for the Valley Isle. Though the swell wasn’t as great as forecasted, John still  got his toes wet .

But this 100-mile journey was only a test run for John’s true sailing ambitions. Luckily for him,  Falcor  is custom-built for lengthy excursions.

At over 1,000 sq ft of sailing area, and featuring twin Westerbeke diesels, according to the stock Gunboat 48 is designed “ for family sabbatical cruising… the 48 series typically features three queen berths, a convertible office or 4th berth and two heads. The simple and informal accommodations are light and airy. The salon, helm and galley are located on the main deck within the pilothouse. The aft cockpit is well protected and cozy. The overall design premise calls for simplicity for owner-operators, Gunboat performance, and the usual ease of handling. Owners of the Gunboat 48 love their boats .”

And, according to Rice, “[ Falcor was] really transformed into a spaceship…” under his command. “She is completely off grid and capable of multi-month trips without the need for water, power or provisions.”

Travis initially purchased Falcor in North Carolina, then sailed it through the Panama Canal, eventually landing in French Polynesia. Delivering the boat to John, Travis completed a trip he’d always dreamed of, sailing north through the Line Islands and up to Hawaii, just like the ancient Polynesians did all those centuries ago.

For years John John has mentioned, in passing, his desire to embark on a proper sailing mission, perhaps even to take a year off Tour and circumnavigate the globe, of course surfing along the way. But Florence is a busy guy. Despite winning the last two WSL World Titles, he has no plans of taking his foot off the gas, which means that a year-long journey is not in the cards for 2018.

However, he has confirmed that this July, Falcor will make a return trip back to Tahiti for the Billabong Pro at Teahupoo.

“I’m not going to take a year off tour, at least not anytime soon.” John told Stab . “I would love to sail long distances though, and the best way to do that right now would be sailing to Tahiti for the contest.”

See you in French Polynesia!

2006 Gunboat 48 For Sale – TRAVERSE

Traverse 2006 Gunboat 48 For Sale

2006 GUNBOAT 48 FOR SALE

TRAVERSE is one of only six Gunboat 48’s ever built. Rarely do these unicorns come to market. Designed for short-handed sailing, the 48 is truly the only Gunboat designed with a cruising couple or family in mind. Traverse is the most highly appointed 48 afloat. Her current owner, a notable Yachtsman, took a different approach when setting out to refit Traverse. The refit brief was for a “sabbatical cruiser” allowing exquisite comfort for extended periods living aboard. She is a race-ready world cruiser capable of 300 mile days in extreme comfort. TRAVERSE is currently lying in Fort Lauderdale, FL and available for immediate showings.

GUNBOAT 48 TRAVERSE HIGHLIGHTS

Extreme comfort.

Traverse’s refit brief was clear. The owner wanted to incorporate all of the creature comforts of a cruising cat while preserving her go fast DNA. With the addition of a small generator and air conditioning, only a minimal amount of weight was added. These small nuances along with her existing plethora of systems resulted in a luxuriously appointed, fast catamaran that needs nothing.

SHORT-HANDED PERFORMANCE

Traverse’s Morelli & Melvin design is legendary. With performance at the forefront, she was conceptualized with the short-handed crew in mind. Capable of long passages and able to knock off up to 300 miles in a day, she is nothing short of spectacular. During her refit, a fat head Stratis main was built, enhancing performance even further. Able to point at 35 degrees, she even out performs most monohulls on the market today.

SIMPLICITY OF SYSTEMS

With the intent of setting sail for extended cruising, Traverse is optioned with simple, reliable systems throughout. With electrical systems of 12V DC and 110V AC, there are no complex converters to contend with. Her 12V primary winches with manual override offer redundancy while sailing to even the most remote of destinations. Her solar array and HO alternators will maintain her house banks in any conditions rain or shine. Reliable Volvo D2 power with direct drive propulsion minimize the requisite maintenance associated with sail drive units.

With her spacious salon and galley spanning the entire beam of the bridge deck, Traverse offers a bright and airy feel throughout. Forward of Salon is the entry door leading to the forward cockpit. Step up into the deck, walk forward and the large trampolines offer a comfortable space for relaxing in the elements. Aft of the Salon the large entry door and opening windows flow into the cockpit. Here you will find a large lounge pad to port and an outdoor dinette to starboard able to accommodate up to four.

PRIVATE ACCOMMODATION

Featuring four staterooms, two in each hull, Traverse allows guests to spread out after a long day on the water. Featuring two large berths to port, guests can relax in comfort. The Starboard hull, currently utilized as the Owner’s cabin, features a queen berth forward and a single aft. An electric piano currently occupies the desk in the single cabin/office and doubles as a music studio for the current owner.

  1. Gunboat 48 Review

Price - Gunboat 48s go for up to $2 million. That's a lot of money to spend on a 48 foot boat with 3 cabins and there is plenty of competition in this market (the Marsaudon Composites TS42 and the Outremer 4X will probably match her for speed for example). The Slyder 49 will give you more space and pretty decent speed.

C-Cat. 48. One of my favourite performance catamaran designs is the Gunboat 48. They only ever built six of them, and they still change hands for well into 7 figures, so it has always surprised me that no-one has tried to fill this market gap. Outremer and Marsaudon have a 45 and a 42 respectively - slightly smaller, and they seem to sell well.
