The search for a missing sailor in Queensland has ended in tragedy after a man’s body was found by water police on Sunday.

The 65-year-old Yeppoon man was travelling from the coastal town to Brisbane, with two others - a father, aged in his 60s, and his son, aged in his 20s - when the yacht overturned near Lady Elliot Island.

The father and son managed to climb onto the upside-down vessel and set off an EPIRB, alerting Australian Maritime Safety Authority who deployed the Bundaberg RACQ LifeFlight Rescue chopper shortly before 8.30am.

The duo held on tight for almost two hours until they were rescued.

“Less than two hours later, the crew managed to locate the men and performed two separate winch rescues, hoisting the men individually into the safety of the aircraft,” LifeFlight Rescue said in a statement on Sunday.

“They were then flown to Bundaberg Hospital for observation.”

The search for the 65-year-old man began early Sunday morning after the yacht overturned about four nautical miles south of Lady Elliot Island.

Police and emergency services commenced a search and rescue operation involving multiple vessels, police divers and the rescue helicopter.

However, after hours of searching the 65-year-old man’s body was tragically discovered just after 2pm.

“Just after 10.15am, the rescue helicopter located two people in the water,” a Queensland police statement read.

“The 62-year-old Yeppoon man and 27-year-old Yeppoon man remain in stable conditions at Bundaberg Hospital.

“Just after 2pm, water police recovered the body of a 65-year-old Yeppoon man.”

MASON, Ohio — Walking into Cambridge Park II's 100-block common room, the overwhelming scent of house fire greets visitors and those still living in the six apartments.

The walls are streaked with black soot 10 days after a fire killed a man on the bottom floor.

Josh Oliver said he and other neighbors had tried to save the man's life, but the heavy black smoke drove them out of the building.

"Everything happened so quick," Oliver said. "I came in. I grabbed my cat. I went out."

Oliver reached out to us after he said he heard little from property managers Dawn Management about efforts to clean and repair the common area for a week.

He said the black acrid powder lining the hall outside his door is a reminder of the life lost next door.

"Literally 20 feet from where I sleep, a man died in a fire, and then when I get up to go to work at night I'm right back at it," Oliver said.

Oliver said the property wouldn't forgive rent or allow tenants to relocate to available units within the complex, and he said he doesn't have the resources to find another place to live.

"I live paycheck to paycheck," he said. "How am I supposed to go search for another place?"

Once we reached out to Dawn Management, they sent the station a statement attributed to Cambridge Park II Management.

"The insurance company was contacted within five hours after the fire. The insurance adjuster was at the property for the first time today. Our team is set to begin work in common areas tomorrow," the statement read.

Nick DiNardo, Legal Aid of Greater Cincinnati's managing attorney, called the delay in remediation was "problematic."

"Frankly, most responsible landowners will start the remediation pretty quickly so it's a little unusual that it's taken this long," DiNardo said.

DiNardo said landlords have a legal responsibility to maintain common areas, and tenants have tools at their disposal to push landlords to address problems within a complex.

He said, first, tenants should attempt to speak with and negotiate directly with landlords to address any particular issue.

Second, DiNardo said tenants can reach out to local fire departments or building departments to request their inspection of problem sections of a property.

Finally, the attorney said tenants should approach the local municipal judge to begin a "rent escrow process." The process allows tenants to place rent in an account inaccessible by property owners until an issue is addressed.

"The landlord generally has to complete those repairs before the money is released from the court to them. One thing a tenant shouldn't do is withhold rent," Dinardo said.

Withholding rent to force a repair is illegal in Ohio, according to DiNardo.

Oliver said he held no animosity toward the complex he's lived in for 12 years, and only hopes the common area will be cleaned and repaired.

Two pilots killed in small World War II-era plane crash during Father's Day event in California

A World War II-era plane crashed during a Father's Day event in California, killing two pilots on board the plane, according to the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA).

The FAA said a twin-engine Lockheed 12A crashed shortly after departing Chino Airport in California around 12:35 p.m. on Saturday, June 15. 

Officials said two people were on board when the plane crashed. No one on the ground was injured, officials said. 

Authorities did not identify the pilots, but according to two friends who spoke with FOX 11, one of the victims was Frank Wright, the Chief of Operations at the Yanks Air Museum.

The witness told FOX 11 that Wright had participated in a panel discussion at a Father's Day event at the museum before the crash.

The witness told the station about the moment the plane crashed, saying it "happened right in front of my eyes."

The witness recalled the moment of impact to FOX 11 saying that the plane was "no more than 300 feet in the air" when it started banking to the left. 

"It took a nosedive, and the first part of the plane that hit was the left wing," the witness said. "And what happened was [an] immediate explosion. Like [a] big fireball, black smoke." 

Yanks Air Museum released a statement and said they are working with the FAA to determine what caused the plane to crash.

"Shortly after noon yesterday, one of our aircraft was involved in an accident in an unoccupied field near Chino Airport resulting in two fatalities aboard the aircraft. At this time, we are working with local authorities and the FAA," the museum said. 

The museum added that they will be closed until further notice.

"Yanks Air Museum will be closed until further notice as our family deals with this tragedy, and we appreciate your patience and respect for our privacy as we navigate through this difficult time," the museum wrote. 

The FAA and National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) are investigating what caused the crash. 

The NTSB told FOX 11 that an investigator would be at the scene on Sunday, and that the plane would be taken to a secure facility for investigation.

WASHINGTON – NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg ripped Chinese leaders Monday for publicly claiming to support Ukraine in its war against Russia, but quietly backing Moscow and sending it military supplies .

“China is fueling the largest armed conflict in Europe since World War II,” Stoltenberg said during an event at the Wilson Center in DC. “At the same time, it wants to maintain good relations with the West.

“Well, Beijing cannot have it both ways.”

Since Russia’s invasion began in February 2022, China has publicly stated its desire for peace and maintained a publicly neutral position.

As recently as June 3, Chinese Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Mao Ning claimed Beijing “values its strategic partnership with Ukraine.”

“Since the full escalation of the Ukraine crisis, China has maintained communication and cooperation with Ukraine,” she said. “China is still Ukraine’s largest trading partner. Our Embassy in Ukraine continues to function normally.”

However, China is also Russia’s largest trading power – a position that has been solidified after dozens of countries around the world sanctioned exports and imports to and from Russia.

While China claims it has not sent Russia any weapons for use in Ukraine, US officials say Beijing has rendered the distinction meaningless by supplying Moscow critical technological components for war.

“Publicly, [Chinese] President Xi [Jinping] has tried to create the impression that he’s taking a back seat in this conflict to avoid sanctions and keep trade flowing,” Stoltenberg said Monday.

Beijing has also sent material that is used in the production of weapons, including “missiles, tanks [and] aircraft,” according to the NATO chief.

“Beijing is sharing high-end technologies, like semiconductors or dual-use items. Last year, Russia imported 90% of its microelectronics from China,” he said. “China is also working to provide Russia with improved supplied capability and imagery.

“All of this enables much death and destruction on Ukraine, bolsters Russia’s defense industrial base and evades the impact of sanctions and export controls.”

The US has taken notice, sanctioning seven China-based companies last week for shipping millions of dollars worth of material to Russia, including items which could be used in weapons systems.

“This idea that we can distinguish between the threats we see in Europe posed by Russia and the threats and the challenges of Xi in the Asia-Pacific posed by China – that we can separate those is wrong,” Stoltenberg said. “Our security is global, not regional, and that’s very clearly demonstrated in Ukraine.”

China has said it respects Ukraine’s territorial integrity – an argument Beijing uses to justify its illegal claims on large swaths of land in the South China Sea, including Taiwan.

However, China has neither pushed Russian tyrant Vladimir Putin to return Crimea to Ukraine nor implored his proxies to restore the eastern Donbas region to Kyiv.

China has also made other pro-Moscow moves, including pushing a controversial peace plan last year that would have seen Ukraine submit to Russian demands with little gained in return.

The US decried the mooted truce, with National Security Council spokesman John Kirby saying that while a peace plan “may sound good … any proposals from [China] … would be one-sided and reflect only the Russian perspective.”

This past weekend, China snubbed a peace summit held in Lucerne, Switzerland that was attended by representatives of more than 100 nations and international organizations.

Beijing declined an invitation after learning that Moscow would not be represented.

“China has repeatedly stressed that the international peace conference needs to meet the three important elements – namely, recognition from both Russia and Ukraine , equal participation of all parties and fair discussion of all peace plans,” Mao said. “As far as China is concerned, the meeting does not yet seem to meet these three elements and that is exactly why China would not be able to take part in the meeting.”

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky told summit attendees Saturday that he hoped Russia – and by extension, China – would attend the next iteration of the event.

Two pilots flying a small World War II -era plane crashed to their deaths near a Father’s Day event that one of them had just spoken at.

The Yanks Air Museum chief of operations, Frank Wright, 67, was on board a twin-engine Lockheed 12A with a co-pilot when it dropped around 12.35pm on Saturday just after takeoff at Chino Airport, according to the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA).

A witness at a Father’s Day event at the museum located at the California airport was taking pictures and videos at the time of the crash and it ‘happened right in front of his eyes’.

‘There was a shrub or a bush in front of me, a tall one, maybe about 10 or 12 feet high, and I had to move around it, and the moment I came around it, the plane disappeared behind it,’ the witness told KABC .

‘But then when I got around it, the plane started listing to the left… very sharp, and started going down.’

The aircraft ‘took a nose dive and the first part of the plane that hit was the left wing’, the witness said, adding, ‘that’s where the fuel was I guess, and what happened was immediate explosion’.

Both pilots died. They were the only ones aboard the plane and no one on the ground was hurt.

Wright had just taken part in a panel discussion at the event, the witness said. He was on the museum’s flight team.

‘He always had time to sit down and talk planes and flying with me and if I ever had a mechanical question on how to solve a DC-3 issue he would always help,’ wrote Gary Stark on Facebook .

‘He will be missed tremendously in the warbirds community.’

The other victim’s identity was not immediately known.

The cause of the crash is being investigated by the FAA and the National Transportation Safety Board. An official with the board on Sunday evaluated the plane, which was then set to be moved to a facility for more examination.

The museum’s Pops & Props Event took place from 11am to 4pm on Saturday with ‘delicious food on-site, a one-of-a-kind Aircraft Bar, Prizes like a flight in the UC-40 Electra or T-6 Texan, VIP tours, Photo opportunities, Flight Demonstrations and vendors’, according to its website .

Museum officials stated that the site ‘will be closed until further notice as our family deals with this tragedy, and we appreciate your patience and respect for our privacy as we navigate through this difficult time’.

LAS VEGAS (AP) — Gervonta “Tank” Davis made a triumphant return to the ring after more than a year away, once again showing why he is one of the top pound-for-pound boxers.

Armed with a punching power not typically associated with a lightweight, Davis made full use if his skills Saturday night in dominating Frank Martin and knocking him out at 1:29 of the eighth round to retain the WBA championship.

“I knew the way he fell he wasn’t getting back up,” Davis said.

Davis delivered a right and two lefts to Martin’s face to send the Indianapolis resident to the canvass for his first career loss after he won his first 18 fights. Tank again proved to be one of boxing’s most ferocious punchers, improving to 30-0 — all but two by knockout.

He predicted before the fight an eight-round knockout.

“I was just throwing that out there. Next fight in the first round,” Davis said, smiling.

This fight showed why Davis, a Baltimore native and resident, was a substantial favorite at 7-1, according to BetMGM Sportsbook .

That bout between 29-year-olds headlined the 100th championship fight night at the MGM Grand Garden Arena, which has been supplanted by T-Mobile Arena as Las Vegas’ prime spot for combat sports. To mark the occasion, four title fights took place, including the interim WBC light heavyweight championship that David Benavidez won by unanimous decision over Oleksandr Gvozdyk.

But there was no doubt who the main attractions were on this night, and that was clear at Wednesday’s press conference. Davis and Martin bantered back and forth during the Wednesday news conference. Then when the two boxers did the traditional poses afterward, Davis pretended to take a swing at Martin. Martin flinched and Davis left the podium laughing.

This was Davis’ first fight since April 22, 2023, when he delivered a devastating left uppercut that handed Ryan Garcia a seventh-round knockout at T-Mobile Arena. Garcia, wearing a shirt that read “Tank’s No. 1 Fan,” congratulated and hugged the champion after the victory over Martin.

The 421-day layoff showed early as Martin won two of the first three rounds, including a right that caught Davis in the face.

That seemed to wake up Davis, who then took over the fight by repeatedly sending Martin into ropes and corners. Davis appeared ready to finish off Martin with several hard blows in the sixth round, bringing the pro-Tank crowd of 13,239 to its feet.

“I had to get in the right range,” Davis said. “He has a decent jab. I had to break him down as the fight was going on.”

Then in the eighth, Davis ended any doubts by charging after Martin early then knocking him out midway through the round. As Martin was being counted out, Davis bounced on the second rung of the ropes, jumped off, and then went to the top cords and did a backflip and stuck the landing .

“I got caught with a shot that I didn’t see,” Martin said. “It came from underneath.”

Benavidez (29-0) made a successful debut in his move up from super middleweight. The Las Vegas resident defeated Gvozdyk (20-2), a Ukraine native who trains in Oxnard, California, by scores of 116-112, 117-111 and 119-109.

Alberto Puello (23-0) of the Dominican Republic won the WBC interim super lightweight championship with a split decision over Gary Russell (17-1) of Capitol Heights, Maryland. Two judges gave Puello the victory with scores of 115-112 and 114-113 and another had it for Russell 118-109.

Dominican middleweight champion Carlos Adames (24-1) retained his WBC belt with a unanimous decision over Terrell Gausha (24-4-1) of Encino, California. Two judges scored the fight 118-110 and the other had it 119-109.

Heisman Trophy winner and Washington Commanders rookie quarterback Jayden Daniels was among those in attendance. Milwaukee Bucks star Damian Lillard, Chicago Bulls forward DeMar DeRozan and coach Antonio Pierce and owner Mark Davis of the Las Vegas Raiders also were in the crowd.

World War II veteran weds near Normandy's D-Day beaches. He's 100 and his bride is 96

CARENTAN-LES-MARAIS, France — Together, the collective age of the bride and groom was nearly 200. But World War II veteran Harold Terens and his sweetheart Jeanne Swerlin proved that love is eternal as they tied the knot Saturday inland of the D-Day beaches in Normandy, France.

Their respective ages — he's 100, she's a youngster of just 96 — made their nuptials an almost double-century celebration. The New York City natives — who say they keep each other young by dancing to their favorite music and by holding hands — met three years ago in Boca Raton, Florida.

On "CBS Evening News" earlier this week, Terens shared his feelings for Swerlin.

"I'm getting married because I love this girl," he said. "She's one of the most magnificent women."

On her way into the nuptials, the bubbly bride-to-be said: "It's not just for young people, love, you know? We get butterflies. And we get a little action, also.″

The location was the elegant stone-worked town hall of Carentan, a key initial D-Day objective that saw ferocious fighting after the June 6, 1944, Allied landings that helped rid Europe of Adolf Hitler's tyranny.

Like other towns and villages across the Normandy coast where nearly 160,000 Allied troops came ashore under fire on five code-named beaches, it's an effervescent hub of remembrance and celebration on the 80th anniversary of the deeds and sacrifices of young men and women that day, festooned with flags and bunting and with veterans feted like rockstars.

As the swing of Glenn Miller and other period tunes rang out on the streets, well-wishers — some in WWII-period clothes — were already lined up a good hour before the wedding, behind barriers outside the town hall, with a rousing pipe and drum band also on hand to serenade the happy couple.

After both declaring "oui" to vows read by Carentan's mayor in English, the couple exchanged rings.

"With this ring, I thee wed," Terens said.

She giggled and gasped, "Really?"

With Champagne flutes in hand, they waved through an open window to the adoring crowds outside.

"To everybody's good health. And to peace in the world and the preservation of democracy all over the world and the end of the war in Ukraine and Gaza," Terens said as he and his new bride then clinked glasses and drank.

The crowd yelled "la mariée!" - the bride! — to Swerlin, who wore a long flowing dress of vibrant pink. Terens looked dapper in a light blue suit and matching pink kerchief in his breast pocket.

And they're expected to get a very special wedding-night party: They've been invited to the state dinner at the Elysee Palace on Saturday night with President Emmanuel Macron and U.S. President Joe Biden, the mayor said.

The wedding was symbolic, not binding in law. Mayor Jean-Pierre Lhonneur's office said he wasn't empowered to wed foreigners who weren't residents of Carentan, and that the couple, who are both American, hadn't requested legally binding vows. However, they could always complete those formalities back in Florida if they wished.

Lhonneur likes to say that Normandy is practically the 51st state of the USA, given its reverence and gratitude for the deeds and sacrifices of the tens of thousands of Allied soldiers who never made it home from the Battle of Normandy.

"Love is eternal, yes, maybe," the mayor said, referring to the newlyweds, although his comments also fittingly describe the feelings of many Normans for veterans.

"I hope for them the best happiness together."

Dressed in a 1940s dress that belonged to her mother, Louise, and a red beret, 73-year-old Jane Ollier was among early-bird spectators who waited for a glimpse of the lovebirds.

"It's so touching to get married at that age,'' she said. "If it can bring them happiness in the last years of their lives, that's fantastic."

The WWII veteran first visited France as a 20-year-old U.S. Army Air Forces corporal shortly after D-Day. Terens enlisted in 1942 and, after shipping to Britain, was attached to a four-pilot P-47 Thunderbolt fighter squadron as their radio repair technician.

On D-Day, Terens helped repair planes returning from France so they could rejoin the battle. He said half his company's pilots died that day. Terens himself went to France 12 days later, helping transport freshly captured Germans and just-freed American POWs to England. Following the Nazi surrender in May 1945, Terens again helped transport freed Allied prisoners to England before he shipped back to the U.S. a month later.

The couple, both widowed, grew up in New York City: she in Brooklyn, he in the Bronx.
