The Catamaran Resort and Spa, San Diego

The Catamaran Resort Hotel & Spa is situated between Sail Bay and the Pacific Ocean where San Diego’s Scripps family once had their summer home. The elegant hotel at the corner of Mission Boulevard and Pacific Beach Drive was designed with a 1950s Polynesian vibe. The lobby’s dramatic island Mulberry Tapa (barkcloth) that hangs behind the Tahitian Black Koa wood welcome desk, an exotic stone waterfall and koi pond, hand-crafted Mexican Cantera floor tiles, and dark Honduran mahogany finishes welcome guests to a private tropical paradise. Imported traditional Pacific Island artworks adorn the lobby and other shared spaces in the hotel, and complement the colonial Hawaiian architecture.

Catamaran Resort Rooms

There are seven kinds of guest accommodations at the Catamaran that are divided between bay front and garden view choices. Bay front rooms provide a king or two double beds, a sitting area, and a small fridge. Bay front suites have separate bedrooms and couches in the living areas that fold out to beds, plus wet bars and fridges. Bay front suites are between the Tower and Sail Bay. Bay front rooms are in the building next to the suites facing Sail Bay.

Deluxe bay front and garden suites have separate bedrooms and fold-out couches in the living area, but also have kitchens with stoves, ovens, and full-size refrigerators. Bay front and garden studios have full kitchens, two double beds, and dining areas. All deluxe suites and studios are located in the Tower where you can enjoy epic views of either Coronado Bridge and beyond to Mexico, or Crystal Pier and north to La Jolla , depending on your room location.

Many bay front accommodations open to the sandy shores of Sail Bay, separated only by a grassy area. Garden view rooms open to the lush tropical plants and trees throughout the property; some open up to the pond or pool areas. To choose the room location that’s right for you, check out the property map . All rooms have patios or balconies, free HBO, hi-speed wireless Internet (paid upgrade for larger bandwidth), an iPod docking station, coffeemakers, laptop size room safe, irons and ironing boards, and hair dryers.

If you want a little more privacy away from the action combined with epic views, choose a room on the upper floors of the Tower. The best bay front rooms and suites are the ones facing Sail Bay. This area is in the heart of the action and convenient to the water, so if you want to watch passersby on the bike/walkway that encircles Sail Bay, get in on one of the many resort activities, or catch an occasional wedding, this is the place to be. Some guests have expressed concern that rooms at the Catamaran are dated, so if aesthetics is your primary reason for choosing this hotel, check out the accommodation videos on their site before making a reservation.

Catamaran Resort Amenities

Ah, amenities. This is where the Catamaran Resort Hotel & Spa really shines. You will never run out of things to do here. Adults will love Atoll Restaurant, Moray’s Lounge, the Bahia Belle, and the Catamaran Spa. Kids will go wild for the Kids’ Club and Arcade.

There are many wonderful places to eat near the hotel, but if you only eat one time at Atoll Restaurant at the Catamaran, make it Sunday Brunch with bottomless mimosas from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Weather permitting, take your brunch on the outdoor patio. It’s a little pricey, but oh so worth it.

Moray’s Lounge features local seasonal craft brews as well as a full bar. Happy Hours are daily from 3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. Appetizers are $10, craft brews are $5, well drinks are $5.50, and house wines are $6. Inside, enjoy their 800 gallon saltwater aquarium and outside enjoy the late afternoon ambiance.

catamaran resort la jolla

Bahia Belle hour-long cruises on Mission Bay are complimentary for Catamaran guests. Choose from family or cocktail sternwheeler cruises. Seasonal dining options are also available aboard the Bahia Belle, and often cocktail cruises feature DJs or live music.

Get your Zen fix at the Asian-inspired Catamaran Spa . Take a few minutes to yourself in the relaxation room with a fruit-infused water, work out in the fitness room, get a facial and make-up for a night out, or enjoy the steam room, sauna, or outdoor hot tub. Go all out and ask about the 2-hour Ritual.

Kids are important at the Catamaran. They’ll love the Kids’ Arcade with Dance Dance Revolution, air hockey, pool, arcade games, and more. Check out Kids’ Corner for more great activities for kids around the resort, the neighborhood, and out and about in San Diego.

These are just a few of dozens of activities at the resort and in the area. Hang out bayside on the beach, walk across the street to the Pacific Ocean for an entirely different beach experience, catch one of Catamaran’s complimentary Movies on the Bay or one of their famous luaus. Try yoga on a standup paddle board or learn to surf. Rent paddle boards, Funcats, kayaks, sail boats, Segways, bicycles, ski boats, you name it. If it says outdoor fun, the Catamaran can hook you up with a great time again and again.

Amenities tip:

Some guests have expressed concern about the costs of equipment rentals at the Catamaran, including steep deposits as much as $100 to $500. The suggestion is to stop by Mission Bay Sportcenter where many of the same rentals can be obtained at cheaper prices. Another frequent guest concern is the $18 per day self-parking fee, so be aware. Parking is tough anywhere in Pacific Beach and Mission Beach and the city does not hesitate to tow away your vehicle; be careful and read all street signs if you try to avoid this fee.

Fantastic stay! Before visiting customer service was super helpful over the phone and took down our requests. We booked a pool side room. Although it didn't come with a microwave. I made a request before hand and luckily we were able to get one in our room without an additional charge. Upon arrival the person at the desk Randy was super helpful. Gave us a rundown of everything, told us where to park etc . Room was clean and they brought in our crib and microwave before we got into the room. Our stay was amazing , scenery was so beautiful. Kids loved the hotel cat, ponds, and birds . The pool was so fun. We had a blast at the arcade as well ! Loved that this hotel including clean pool towels for convenience. Next to the pool was daily kid crafts . We made cute keepsakes while we were there ! The kids also were able to do the movie on the bay and ice cream social on Wednesday! We had a scavenger hunt given to us by the front desk and afterwards the kids turned it in to the Java cafe for a baked treat. Gift shop was REASONABLY PRICED ! Which is something I never thought I'd say! My kids were able to pick out some goodies under $10! ( bracelets , necklaces , notebooks) We ordered room service a few nights and the food was INCREDIBLE! The portions were HUGE. The kids meals could easily feed an adult and came with a scoop of ice cream ! Win win Restaurants are within walking distance. We tried world famous. The food was incredible, great portions and had a view. Beach was fun and clean . We did yoga on the beach in the am (8:30) and it was just so beautiful and the ladies we had instructing us were amazing ! Also kid friendly. Afterwards checking out was an absolute breeze and zero hidden fees were found once checking out ! 1)One thing I will say is poolside can be loud, however didn't bother any my kids including a baby sleeping . The curfew at 10pm was always enforced which made things perfect. 2) no top latch on the hotel doors. Also wasn't a huge problem for us . 3) make sure to ask for utensils and condiments when ordering room service . One night they were slammed and I ran down for some. Again totally understandable

The Best Vacay Ever

This is the best hotel to visit if you want that quintessential escape to a beautiful and relaxing setting! We did the family girls spa day and spent the night. We got a room with the bay view, it was so worth it and isn’t that much more expensive than the garden view. We also were tired and ended up getting room service for dinner and I highly recommend the teriyaki chicken! Coffee was excellent with the to-go cafe, and the restaurants were good. There are some beautiful walking paths around the bay and we checked out the beach, and enjoyed the vibe of the historical and quaintness of Mission Beach. Kayaking, sailing, SUP, and tours on a boat are available which we want to do next time! The staff at Catamaran are fabulous, the lush trees, saltwater aquariums are amazing, and the parrots. What are you waiting for, make a reservation, you will be glad you did!

Amazing wedding at the Catamaran.

My wife and I just had our wedding at the Catamaran. Everything was spectacular from the service, to the room, to the food; the views and everything in between. We were really blown away by the whole experience on our big day. Of particular note is Mae, who is the catering sales manager who we initially reached out to for details about the venue, and through whom we booked the wedding. She went way above and beyond what we could have expected, helping us throughout the entire process and even on the actual wedding day. Any time we reached out for details, she was quick to respond and her answers were always thorough, detailed and helpful. On the day itself, she was right there helping with anything she could, and even helped set up some of our own decorations which I'm not even sure is part of her job description. The Catamaran is extremely fortunate to have someone like Mae working for them.

Beautiful resort for a quick stay-cation!

What a beautiful resort! Thank you to Celina for the best service in helping us choose the best room. She was so patient and kind. Best reservationist I’ve ever had by far. The lobby is gorgeous we felt welcomed, the room was clean and well appointed and the views were beautiful. We’ll definitely be returning.

Special recognition for Diante Ashby

I want to give special recognition to Diante Ashby for being extra helpful. He took his time to resolve my problem. He deserves a raise. He is an excellent employee that makes your resort a better place. He deserves more than 5 stars. If there were to be 10 stars, he definitely deserves them. Thank you.

About the Catamaran Resort

The Catamaran Resort and Spa is San Diego’s premier Polynesian-themed resort located in Mission Bay . When visiting get ready to enjoy a lush paradise over-flowing with fun things to do and see!

View room options

We stayed in their Bayfront Suite while visiting which I highly recommend to anyone interested in booking a stay!  From our front door we could see (and loudly hear) the lobby’s waterfall.  I would open the door often just to hear the sound of the soothing water.

From the back-door we were right along Mission Bay.  During the evening’s luau we literally got to watch and appreciate the show right from our hotel room!

Restaurants

The Catamaran Resort has two restaurants on property: Oceana Coastal Kitchen and Moray’s Outdoor Lounge.  Although they sit right next to each other, they both have their own unique features and different menus.  Visiting both is a must!

We came here for their Sunday Champagne Brunch and this was hands down one of the best brunches I’ve ever had!! They had oysters, crab legs, charcuterie boards, a variety of salads, vegetables, sushi, fruit and so much more!

Personal Experience

I have visited the Catamaran Resort in the past for their luau and was blown away with how beautiful this property is.  Immediately when you enter the lobby you are greeted with a 20 foot waterfall complete with live orchids and other exotic plants growing out of it. It such a welcoming spectacle to see!

Make a splash at The Lodge, Bahia, and Catamaran resorts this summer

SDNEWS staff

Dive into summer with a staycation or getaway to the San Diego coast, home to three iconic resorts that were made for memorable one-of-a-kind vacations: Bahia Resort Hotel, Catamaran Resort Hotel and Spa, and The Lodge at Torrey Pines, where timeless luxury and coastal serenity coalesce in seaside La Jolla. Resort guests can enjoy endless family-friendly activities, delicious culinary events, fireworks cruises, and more. The following are some of the top things to do at the resorts this summer:

ISLAND VIBES

Discover your “Aloha” at the Catamaran Resort, featuring the Sunset Luaus on Mission Bay , a summer tradition that takes place Tuesdays and Fridays, June 14 through Aug. 30. Fun for the whole family, the luaus feature an all-you-can-eat Hawaiian buffet, island music, Pride of Polynesia hula dancers, fiery torch performers, and a volcano that erupts confetti. All guests receive a lei and tropical mai tai. There are also luau-themed activities for kids like lei-making and festive crafts.

Guests can enhance the experience with Kahuna VIP tickets that include early check-in, an upgraded lei greeting, a souvenir cup, welcome appetizers, a meet and greet with the Pride of Polynesia performers, and reserved seating close to the stage. Hotel guests can receive a 20% discount on luau tickets.

Additional island-themed activities at the Catamaran include a complimentary poolside Keiki (Kids) Club, (daily, 1-3 p.m.), featuring Hawaiian-inspired arts and crafts; complimentary Hula Lessons and fresh flower Lei Making (cost $20) which take place bayside on Tuesdays and Fridays (3-5 p.m.), and a daily Bird Encounter (10 a.m.-3:30 p.m.) and the Bird Show (3 p.m., except Sundays and Wednesdays), featuring colorful talking parrots – a real-life outdoor enchanted Tiki room!

FLAVORS OF THE SEASON

A tantalizing addition to any San Diego vacation or staycation is sampling its amazing culinary scene. The Lodge at Torrey Pines, Bahia, and Catamaran resorts offer several events this summer.

The Lodge presents two monthly dinner series. Artisan Table Signature Wine Dinners feature exceptionally crafted, seasonal communal meals paired with California’s finest wines. Summer dates for Artisan Table are June 20, featuring Silver Oak and OVID Wineries; July 18, featuring Far Niente Winery, and Aug. 15, featuring the acclaimed Hundred Acre Wines.

Oceana Coastal Kitchen in the Catamaran gets gourmet with Wild Wednesdays , a new weekly four-course tasting menu by executive chef Paul Arias. Each dinner highlights fresh-caught seafood and local produce from the Pacific Beach Farmers’ Market, with optional wine pairings.

Seafood fans can dive into Oceana’s Make Your Own Sushi class on Thursdays (3-4 p.m.) where guests create their sushi rolls alongside the restaurant’s sushi chef. Cost is $21 per person.

Gourmands can also indulge at Chef’s Table on Aug. 9, a new four-course dinner experience at Dockside 1953, Bahia’s distinguished waterfront restaurant. Curated by executive chef Bryan Stuppy, the dinner takes guests on a journey of textures, colors, and flavors that evoke the essence of the summer season. Diners can expect fresh seafood, meat, and produce, with optional wine and cocktail pairings.

The Lodge, Bahia, and Catamaran resorts cater to families with interactive activities all summer long. At the Catamaran , guests of all ages can cozy up with outdoor Movies on the Bay every Monday night, an Ice Cream Social and Family Game Night on Wednesdays, Self-guided Scavenger Hunts, and more.

The Bahia gets into the fun with Animal Encounters on select Wednesdays and Saturdays, courtesy of local wildlife ambassador Wild Wonders, Poolside Bingo on Tuesdays and Fridays, and a daily Kid’s Craft Corner and Family Beach Activity, just to name a few.

The Lodge brings the great outdoors in with its complimentary Slumber Package, a new tent set up for kids inside the guest rooms – ideal for a special movie night with the whole family. Sweet treats await kids on Thursdays with Cookie Decorating (2-3 p.m.) and S’mores (4 p.m.); cost $25 per child.

For guests in need of some relaxation, renewal, and self-care during their summer sojourn, zenful offerings abound at all three resorts. Complimentary weekend Wellness Activities at the Bahia Resort range from vinyasa and hatha yoga to Pilates and reflexology, as well as Standup Paddleboard Yoga on Mission Bay.

STAR-SPANGLED FUN

There will be two fireworks displays over Mission Bay during the Independence Day weekend. Bahia and Catamaran resort guests will be treated to views from the shoreline, a spot for a Bayside Bonfires experience beforehand to toast the sunset and roast s’mores under the stars. Accommodating up to 10 guests, everything is provided including firewood, chairs, s’mores fixings, as well as tending to the fire and clean up.

Revelers at the Bahia and Catamaran resorts can board a historic sternwheeler for the 3rd of July Fireworks Cruise and enjoy views of Mission Bay Yacht Club and SeaWorld’s fireworks displays from the middle of the bay. The cruise will feature a live band, DJ, a cash bar with cocktail specials, burgers, hot dogs, snacks, a photo booth, and party favors. Tickets are $35 for hotel guests and $45 for general admission.

The festivities continue with a 4th of July Family Fireworks Cruise to view SeaWorld’s fireworks show. The cruise will board at the Bahia Resort and includes two live DJs, a cash bar with cocktail specials, burgers and hot dogs, and a photo booth. Tickets are $60.

CRUISE NEWS

This summer marks the return of family Sightseeing Cruises (daily, 6-8 p.m.) between the Bahia and Catamaran resorts on the historic Bahia Belle sternwheeler. Guests of all ages can enjoy a new narrated, 75-minute tour of the bay, its history, and iconic sights. They’re also treated to a seasonal welcome beverage, a self-guided scavenger hunt for kids, and a cash bar with grab-and-go offerings. Tickets are $15 for hotel guests and $20 for general admission.
