Apsa asia superyacht night at monaco yacht show 2023.

superyacht night 2023

The Asia-Pacific Superyacht Association is looking forward to welcoming over 200 members and their guests to the Asia Superyacht Night (Monaco) being held on the eve of the Monaco Yacht Show (MYS) 2023. The highlight of the Association’s event calendar, members from the Asia-Pacific superyacht community will gather at the Novotel Monaco for this invitation-only event that connects the Asia-Pacific with the global superyacht community.

Nigel Beatty, Chairman of APSA, is delighted that Asia Superyacht Night has proved to be such a crowd pleaser. “This year’s event is looking to be even bigger and better, and we will welcome our APSA members and guests to the Novotel Monaco where the event has been held since 2017. This is the perfect opportunity for members to catch up and share industry news, and build on the connections that they have made through their APSA membership.”

“This year’s event is exceptionally well supported by nine sponsors, all of whom are APSA members. Maritime Cook Islands and Cook Islands Yacht Squadron have returned as Premium Sponsors. Our Gold Sponsors are YACHTZOO, Hill Dickinson, Superyacht Australia and Dörries Yachts GmbH, and our four Silver Sponsors are Azure Yacht Crew Health, GMT Global Marine Travel, Frigomar and Next Tide (SG Marine Guide).” Beatty believes that the key to the success of this event is its relaxed friendly atmosphere where people come to have fun and network before the main event. “This year’s theme is a combination of the ‘Island Vibes’ of the South Pacific, blended with the Asia tradition of the Mid-Autumn Lantern Festival, which will look fantastic in this spectacular setting.”

Talking with the sponsors, there are many different reasons as to why each of them supports APSA’s signature event. Eleanor Roi, Co-CEO and Director of Business Development & Client Services for Maritime Cook Islands, says “We are pleased to be the Platinum Sponsor for the Asia-Pacific Superyacht Association for the second consecutive year. APSA provides us all with opportunities for further collaboration and networking with industry professionals and clients alike, always expanding the commercial and market reach of the Registry.”

Darrell Hall, a Founding Partner of YACHTZOO, and a supporter of this event from the start says, “Yachtzoo is thrilled to continue its support as a gold sponsor of the APSA Superyacht Night for the sixth consecutive year. We take pride in contributing to the promotion of the Asian region to both charterers and yacht owners. This event offers a wonderful opportunity to connect with fellow industry professionals who share our passion and commitment, while also expanding our expertise in these remarkable destinations.”

Alex Teji, APSA’s Honorary Legal Counsel, and a partner at Hill Dickinson adds, “We, too, have supported APSA from the start, and are pleased to continue to help development of superyacht business in the Asia-Pacific region. We truly value the relationship we have with our South East Asian clients and colleagues.”

Superyacht Australia CEO David Good says, “It is fantastic to get all our Asia-Pacific neighbours together in Monaco the night before the show starts. It’s like a team coming together for the final briefing before the big game, where we are all about to do our best to get more business and yachts to Asia-Pacific – and that’s why Superyacht Australia is pleased to be an APSA event sponsor.”

New APSA member Henning Dörries, Founder and Managing Director of Dörries Yachts GmbH, says, “We are proud to be a gold sponsor this year. As the Asia-Pacific region continues to grow and gain traction within the superyacht market, we are excited to be part of the APSA community to help promote this beautiful part of the world so that it can be enjoyed by owners, guests, and crew alike.”

Silver Sponsors for the evening include: Azure Yacht Crew Health, GMT Global Marine Travel, Frigomar srl, and Next Tide. Co-Owner of Azure Yacht Crew Health, Claire Murray French, says, “We cannot wait to enjoy APSA’s Asia Superyacht Night as a curtain-raiser to what we think will be a very exciting Monaco Yacht Show. Bravo for your efforts over the past year to get the Azure name out there to the industry in Asia-Pacific and beyond.”

GMT Global Marine Travel Founder and Managing Director Tim Davey also expressed his gratitude for APSA’s ongoing efforts in promoting Asia and the Pacific as an exceptional superyacht destination. “This region offers an extraordinary array of ancient and modern cultural experiences; if you’re ready to visit this remarkable part of the world, contact GMT to help fly you there.”

New APSA members Frigomar and Next Tide are excited to be participating, and Luca Santambrogio, Manager for Frigomar, says the Italian company is “very honoured to be able to collaborate with APSA, whose work and efforts we deeply value. We haven’t really worked together for a long time, but our company is looking forward to a long partnership to support the growth of the superyacht business in Asia. We are delighted to be sponsors of this event in our 50th year of activity, and we are thrilled to meet colleagues and friends from the industry.”

Founder of Singapore-based Next Tide, Wade Pearce, says this is a great opportunity to keep the spotlight on Asia. The Founder and Organiser of the Singapore Yachting Festival says, “We are thrilled to be a sponsor this year; we believe that APSA is doing an excellent job in keeping the APAC region well-informed, and we see great opportunities for Next Tide to support businesses bridging Asia and Europe.”

This year’s ‘Island Vibes’, along with Asian celebrations, will have everyone on their feet and dancing. The beautiful Cook Islands dancers Rehiana Wiki Koteka and Terito Story will be there to welcome the guests and weaving their island magic on the eve of the Monaco Yacht Show. Don’t be shy to ask for a photo!

Superyacht Challenge Antigua 2023 Overall

Photo of YachtBoatNews

The final race of the 2023 Superyacht Challenge Antigua was held off the South Coast of Antigua on Sunday 12 March.

The weather this year was more Mediterranean than Caribbean but the spirit of regatta was unchanged.

Now in its 12th edition, the Superyacht Challenge Antigua is an exciting, friendly event, designed to be solely for the pleasure of superyacht owners, their guests and crew.

Zig Zag lift the Gosnell Trophy - 2023 Superyacht Challenge Antigua - photo © Claire Matches / www.clairematches.com

The Gosnell Trophy is awarded as the overall prize. Each yacht competing yachts, and the race committee, cast one vote for the yacht that has competed in the Spirit of the Regatta, both afloat and ashore. This year’s winner was John McMonigall’s Oyster 82 Zig Zag. Racing for the seventh regatta in a row, Zig Zag has now won the Gosnell Trophy on two occasions.

superyacht night 2023

“I feel quite emotional to tell you the truth,” commented Zig Zag’s John McMonigall. “I thought winning it last time was emotional and that was it, but to win again with this lovely friendly crew when we are laughing non-stop is just fantastic. I am terribly flattered that the other teams have voted for us. We may not have won a race this year but on the Antigua Carnival Night we did out-party everybody! It has been a great regatta; I just love it. Up against these huge yachts, you can feel out of place but everybody wanted us to come back and I am so glad that we did in double-spades!”

Zig Zag was a big winner on the social scene, which all counts in respect of winning the Gosnell Trophy. Loudest Caribbean Ladies shirt was won by Zig Zag Bow, Grace Murray. Emma Abreu’s Banana Fritters from the Coal Pot got a special mention at The Famous Cook Off and by far the youngest crew at the regatta, Cameron Raynes, was awarded “Best Boat Captain”, a driftwood toy boat was donated by Catalina, much to his delight of the two year-old.

Scoring two race wins after ORCsy time correction, the Regatta Series Winner was the 121ft Dykstra sloop Action. The afterguard included two of Great Britain’s most decorated sailors Ian Walker and Shirley Robertson. Action also scored well at the social evening winning the Best Team Caribbean wear on the Caribbean Night and Action’s Chef Caroline Jörgenson, won best Caribbean Dish at the Famous Cook Off.

“We are pleased with how we sailed, we are a crew that’s largely been together since 2016 so we were not starting from the very beginning each time and we felt quite quickly we were in our stride,” commented Action’s Shirley Robertson. “Ian Walker is fantastic on Action, he really brings everyone together with an intensity and a marvellous sense of humour, Ian is our secret ingredient but everybody on board has to do their job or it doesn’t work. Action is a great boat but everything has to be orchestrated, so well done to the permanent crew. The preparation and the huge amount of work to race a boat like Action takes months of work. I think we didn’t make many mistakes, so we didn’t leave much out there. It was good racing; we were all pretty close together and the results were tight in the end. We thoroughly enjoyed the regatta and we can certainly feel ready to go next week to St Barth’s Bucket Regatta.”

The 112ft Sparkman & Stephens sloop Kawil - 2023 Superyacht Challenge Antigua - photo © Claire Matches / www.clairematches.com

The 112ft Sparkman & Stephens sloop Kawil was competing at their fifth regatta and has now been runner-up for two editions. Kawil was the quickest starter for the series and racing as ‘Special K’ won this year’s Stand Up Paddle Board Regatta in aid of the National Sailing Academy of Antigua. Allie Toppa was the quickest around the track. Kawil’s Tess was also given a special mention for her delicious Conch Curry at the Cook Off.

2023 Superyacht Challenge Antigua prizegiving - photo © Claire Matches / www.clairematches.com

Since competing last year, Kawil has been exploring The Baltic Sea. “We visited Sweden, Denmark Estonia, Finland and then through the Kiel Canal to Hamburg and then Amsterdam,” commented Charlie Ross. “The racing here is very close, as the Boat Captain I stand back and let the racing crew get on with it. As long as they don’t break the boat, I am happy! This is a passionate regatta for our boss, he is really competitive. The boat handling is good and so is the atmosphere on board. Juggy Clougher chooses the race team and they are a super bunch, not just great sailors.”

The 148ft Dubois ketch Catalina - 2023 Superyacht Challenge Antigua - photo © Claire Matches / www.clairematches.com

After ORCsy time correction, the 148ft Dubois ketch Catalina won the last race of the SYCA Series to finish third by the narrowest of margins, beating Gitana on countback. This was Catalina’s second regatta but the beautiful ketch is a huge part of the history of the regatta. The ship’s bell as Timoneer is The Gosling Trophy. Catalina was also the winner of the Spirit of Tradition Trophy, donated by Rebecca and Pendennis Shipyard. Catalina’s chef Lisa Grimm also took first place in the Famous Cook Off and Catalina’s crew Murray Ford was the winner of Loudest Caribbean Men’s Shirt on Caribbean Night.

Catalina team - 2023 Superyacht Challenge Antigua - photo © Claire Matches / www.clairematches.com

Boat Captain for the 148ft Dubois ketch Catalina is Sean Whitney. Since racing at the regatta in 2019, Catalina had sailed thousands of miles. “We went through the Panama Canal, spent a great couple of weeks in The Galapagos, then went to the Marquesas Islands and explored French Polynesia for quite a while before sailing to New Zealand. We have done a lot of miles, the owner looks after Catalina very well and for the last six years, it has been a labour of love for the crew. You always have your wits about you when you are sailing these boats. When racing you have to have an awareness for the course and make early calls on manoeuvres, it is a case of maximising the opportunities. Catalina is okay in light airs but if the boat speed goes, it takes a long time to build again, so there is constant concentration on trim and helm.”

superyacht night 2023

Taking part in the first regatta was the 148ft Dubois sloop Gitana, as the fastest boat in the fleet, Gitana was always the last to get away in the Pursuit Starting Sequence. Gitana showed great speed and agility to pass every boat in every race to take a clean sweep of Line honours and elapsed time scores. Narrowly fourth after countback after ORCsy time correction.

Gitana team - 2023 Superyacht Challenge Antigua - photo © Claire Matches / www.clairematches.com

“It was a tough regatta, this was the first racing event for Gitana in seven years and we were very happy with the way that we sailed the boat,” commented Gitana’s Chris Sherlock. “It’s a training regatta for St. Barths for us and the (SYCA) Committee did a great job getting all the races off bar one. I thought they managed the whole thing very well. The regatta served its purpose and we learned a lot, we’ve got a lot of low hanging fruit regarding the (ORCsy) rating to optimise the boat for future events. I was very fortunate that the owner and Jon Barrett asked me to help put the team together so we’ve got nine of the Leopard crew from the bow all the way to the back of the boat with Mitch Booth as tactician. This made our learning curve much, much quicker because we’ve all worked together for so long. We were very pleased with the way that we sailed the boat and the key instrument was having a race team that steps on ready to go complemented by the full time crew. Everybody got on well and hopefully this is the first event of many more for the owner who loves his boat.”

The Prize-Giving Ceremony was held in The Admiral's Inn - 2023 Superyacht Challenge Antigua - photo © Claire Matches / www.clairematches.com

The Prize-Giving Ceremony was held in The Admiral’s Inn, and all of the social functions take place with the kind support of National Parks Authority in Nelson’s Dockyard, a World Heritage Site. The regatta is also supported by Terry Browne and Daniel Taddese at Island Provision. The Superyacht Challenge Antigua is the brain child of Paul Deeth and Stan Pearson who work tirelessly behind the scenes at every regatta. Congratulations should also go to Race Advisors Willii Gohl, Gordon Stredwick and their team for organising great racing in difficult conditions. The next edition of the Superyacht Challenge Antigua will take place in the second week of March 2024, a week before the 2024 St. Barths Bucket Regatta.

Cannes Yachting Festival 2023 Revealed

superyacht night 2023

Cannes Yachting Festival 2023 has announced details of this year’s show. As has been the case every year for over 45 years, Europe’s largest in-water show will be the first major international event of the yachting season.

Port Canto at Cannes Yachting Festival

Over 6 days, from 12 to 17 September, under the sunshine of the French Riviera, more than 650 boats of all sizes (from five to fifty metres) as well as the latest nautical equipment, numerous innovations and world previews will be unveiled for nearly 55,000 expected visitors: professionals, curious on-lookers, keen boaters or experienced enthusiasts.

A major new feature of the 2023 event is the creation of an area afloat in the Vieux Port, which will accommodate smaller boats, from 8 meters upwards, in response to demand from numerous exhibitors.

‘discovering some real gems in-water and on land’.

“Thanks to the renewed confidence of our exhibitors, this 2023 edition is looking very good with similar forecasts to the previous year, i.e. 600 exhibitors, more than 650 boats and 140 previews” explains Sylvie Ernoult, Director of the Yachting Festival.

Ernoult also added:

“This new edition will highlight the small units with the creation of a brand new area, a marina in the heart of the Vieux Port, which will accommodate more than fifty small motor boats from 8 to 12 metres. As the show’s DNA is to offer the most eclectic offer possible, it seemed natural to us to host in the best way its small units, traditionally displayed ashore on the Quai Max Laubeuf, i.e. in a dedicated floating area.” “Once again this year, our visitors will enjoy discovering some real gems in-water and on land, boats of all sizes and types, equipped with ‘traditional’ or carbon-free engines with the first onboard electric, hybrid or hydrogen power systems”

To conclude, Ernoult adds: “As is the case every year, all our teams are mobilised on a daily basis to offer a memorable experience to our exhibitors and visitors.”

Best Superyacht Destinations to Explore in 2023

By Heather Collier

As the year draws to a close, we take a look at some of the most desirable destinations to charter a superyacht in 2023.

Antigua Antigua is part of the lush island group known as the Leeward Islands, named for their prevailing winds which blow from the east. This is a spectacular tropical hideaway with landscapes attracting a well-heeled crowd with its stunning white sand beaches, turquoise waters and lavish resorts, all intertwined with charming harbour towns and fishing villages.

Antigua is now seen as one of the hidden gems of the Caribbean, and is slowly drawing in visitors from all corners of the globe who are in seek of private tranquillity.

It is the largest, most developed, and most prosperous of the Leeward Islands. The capital city of St. John’s in Antigua is a bustling town bursting with a vibrant social scene of premier restaurants serving delicious island cuisine and an eclectic mix of nightclubs to suit the taste of every passionate night owl.

Antigua Sailing Week, which takes place from the end of April to the beginning of May, is a world-class regatta which brings many important vessels and esteemed sailors to the area to compete. Antigua is among the most beautiful locations in the world and stands as one of the foremost destinations in regards to superyacht charter. Every December Antigua plays host to one of the most prestigious charter events in the superyacht industry, showcasing a fleet of the finest superyachts on the charter market.

Set against the stunning backdrop of Nelson’s Dockyard Marina in English Harbour, the Falmouth Harbour and the Antigua Yacht Club Marina, the Antigua Yacht Show attracts scores of visitors from across the globe to bathe in the glorious sun, sea and sands of Antigua whilst taking in the sights of the most sought after yachts on the water. Barbuda Relax, unwind and enjoy the breath of fresh air that is Barbuda island. Off the beaten path of the tourist hordes, Barbuda is the sleepy sister island of Antigua and the go-to spot for travellers seeking some island isolation in a setting of utter beauty and bliss.

With only one town and a total population of under 2000 inhabitants, Barbuda is the epitome of remote island bliss. This undeveloped island is a haven for uninterrupted wildlife, secluded coves and bays and awe-inspiring natural beauty. For travellers seeking some respite from the busier Caribbean hub of Antigua, Barbuda is just a short sail away and the perfect destination for some natural repose and relaxation.

Although there is no marina on the island, the beautiful anchorages and choice of stunning mooring spots along Barbuda's small but breathtaking coastline are endless. Barbuda is best known for its spectacular pink sand beaches, most prominent of which is its centre-point Pink Beach offering 8 miles of pristine pink sand. Stroll uninterrupted for hours taking in this incredible natural phenomenon - the rosy pink glow is a natural result of crushed coral mixed in the sand.

Another of Barbuda's alluring attractions is its magnificent frigate bird colony native to the island. A natural bird watcher's paradise, Barbuda is home to the largest colony of these fascinating pink-chested birds in the Western hemisphere, causing a sight to behold in the local Frigate Bird Sanctuary. The colony can be found in Codrington Lagoon, which is only accessible by a short boat trip with a local guide.

Barbuda is a popular spot with honeymooners and those seeking an escape from the stress and fast-paced nature of daily life. Here, amongst the endless pink sand beaches and jaw-dropping caves, time can stand still for a moment. Australia With an eclectic mix of unique experiences, there are memories to be made in Australia that simply cannot be found anywhere else. Escape to a country that in one moment will leave you in awe at its untouched natural beauty, and the next throw you into the very heart of the some of the world’s most exhilarating events. Beaches are more than a spectacular blend of sand and sea in this colourful country; they’re a lifestyle and inhabit every piece of Australia’s coastal character, from the boho fashion of the locals to the delicious seafood cuisine served in waterfront restaurants.

Australia boasts an all-year-round cruising calendar, outstanding tourism experiences and world-renowned refit and maintenance facilities that welcome the global superyacht fleet. For those willing to indulge their inner hedonist, Australia is the ultimate superyacht playground.

From the stunning coral reefs of Queensland, to the spectacular waterways of New South Wales and the crocodile-filled waterholes of the Northern Territory, Australia is a truly unique yachting experience. The kaleidoscopic colours of the Great Barrier Reef are the pinnacle of any diver’s fantasy. From Port Douglas down to Bundaberg stretches 300,000 square kilometres of coral cays, brimming with marine treasures and exquisite sea life. There is simply no better destination for water-based activities.

However, not all of the adventure is concentrated at sea. Step inland and discover Australia’s diverse flora and fauna, along with a rich Aboriginal culture. Stop off to play with kangaroos, koalas and wombats or sample fine wines at one of Australia’s exemplary vineyards. The rugged beauty of The Kimberley and Tropical North Queensland presents the opportunity to learn something new. Immerse yourself in 50,000-year-old Aboriginal rock art, brush up on your bush tucker skills or get an awe-inspiring perspective of it all from the sky.

Sydney is perfect for a long weekend of luxury comforts, fine dining, and high-end shopping. New Year’s Eve onboard a superyacht with the backdrop of Sydney’s Opera House and Harbour Bridge is certainly one for every owner’s bucket list. Head down to Melbourne, the events capital, for some of the world’s best events.

From the Harbour, you are a short tender cruise from the major sporting events held throughout the year, including the Grand Prix, Melbourne Cup and Australian Open. Alternatively, a short walk down the newly renovated dockside will bring you to the Marvel Stadium, where leading artists flock to perform.

Rhodes An emerald island with incomparable natural beauty, wonderful sunlight and unique hospitality, Rhodes is the ultimate luxurious charter destination offering everything your heart desires. Brimming with mythological and historical stories to tell, Rhodes is widely accepted as one of the most stunning island hotspots and jewel of the Med. With a hospitable local community of residents, Rhodes invites travellers from far and wide to meet, feel and experience the natural beauty, the cultural identity and the unique hospitality of this Dodecanese island.

Past meets present in seamless harmony in Rhodes' bustling city centre. Only here will you find castles, neoclassical buildings and Italian architecture all along the same street. Imposing Italian buildings dominate the seafront of Rhodes, a modern cosmopolitan city.

Lindos, a village with unique beauty with the Acropolis of Lindos, dominates the top of the rock where the settlement is built amphitheatrically. Sights such as the temple of Lindia Athena built in the 4th century BC, the headquarters of the Knights, the church of Agios Ioannis, the port of Agios Pavlos will impress you.

Visit the great Captain Houses with the courtyards with pebble mosaics, the wooden painted ceilings and the Lindian dishes on the walls. The village is brimming with souvenir shops, a wonderful labyrinth of cobbled streets, restaurants and bars that make Lindos so full of life both during the day and well into the night.

"We have a lot in Antigua to help and service the yachting industry. Everything is conveniently located dockside, and there's also Barbuda! Which is a hidden gem in the Caribbean. Barbuda is one of the most unspoilt countries I think left in the Caribbean. We have some new developments going there too. We have a packed calendar coming up." Alan Hosam, Antigua & Barbuda Tourism Authority

A U.S. Secret Service agent was robbed at gunpoint outside Los Angeles on Saturday, the night President Joe Biden was in town for a fundraiser featuring Hollywood celebrities.

On Saturday at 9:36 p.m., police officers responded to a call reporting an armed robbery at a residential community in Tustin, Calif. The suspect reportedly stole a handbag at gunpoint from a Secret Service agent. According to a Tustin Police Department statement , an agent fired a gun during the altercation. Police could not locate the suspect or suspects upon arrival but found contents of the stolen bag in the surrounding area.

On the same night, Biden was in Los Angeles hosting a celebrity fundraiser with former president Barack Obama and television host Jimmy Kimmel. George Clooney, Barbara Streisand, and Julia Roberts attended the event. Biden's team said it raised nearly $30 million from the fundraiser.

The armed robbery comes as Los Angeles continues to struggle with violent crime and a dramatically increasing murder rate. According to the Los Angeles Police Department, the murder rate increased by 30 percent between mid-March 2023 and 2024. The scene was clear of police by early Tuesday afternoon, but orange spray paint used by investigators to indicate where evidence is found remained along several parking spots used by people who use Claymont's rail station.

The orange spray paint could also be seen on nearby grass and in a small opening of overgrowth along a fence leading to I-495.

Yachting Jeff Bezos Throws WaPo CEO Will Lewis a Lifeline (For Now)

“The journalistic standards and ethics at The Post will not change,” Bezos wrote to newsroom leaders in a note backing the paper’s embattled new boss.

While yachting in Mykonos , Jeff Bezos on Tuesday finally broke his silence and commented on the ongoing scandal surrounding the Washington Post .

In an emailed memo to senior editors, the vacationing billionaire reaffirmed his support for embattled Washington Post CEO Will Lewis , writing that “the journalistic standards and ethics at The Post will not change”—even as Lewis and his handpicked incoming editor have come under fire for their reporting practices in the U.K.

“Team – I know you’ve already heard this from Will, but I wanted to also weigh in directly: the journalistic standards and ethics at The Post will not change,” Bezos wrote in the memo obtained by The Daily Beast. “To be sure, it can’t be business as usual at The Post. The world is evolving rapidly and we do need to change as a business. With your support, we’ll do that and lead this great institution into the future. But, as the newsroom leaders who’ve been shaping and guiding our coverage, you also know our standards at The Post have always been very high.”

Bezos continued: “That can’t change—and it won’t. You have my full commitment on maintaining the quality, ethics, and standards we all believe in. A huge thank you for continuing to do the work that makes us all proud, and makes this institution so important.”

The memo, which was first reported by CNN, was sent to much of the Post’ s masthead, including managing editors Matea Gold, Scott Vance, and Krissah Thompson. Bezos cc’d top editors Matt Murray and David Shipley—along with Lewis himself.

Bezos’ comments may not do much to quell a newsroom that’s resided in various states of dread and disgust after Lewis pushed out executive editor Sally Buzbee and installed two former colleagues—Murray and Telegraph editor Rob Winnett—to spearhead a new three-newsroom structure.

Since the restructuring earlier this month, reports from The Daily Beast , The New York Times , and the Post itself have highlighted how Lewis and Winnett relied on methods that violate both standard journalistic ethics and the Post ’s own policies to report out stories in the U.K. Some of these practices include relying on a push for stolen documents and placing employees within government offices to scour for information.

“I don’t know how Will and Rob can stay on at this point,” a Post staffer told The Daily Beast on Monday. “ They have lost the entire newsroom.”

Lewis’ relationship with the newsroom plummeted earlier this month after multiple stories emerged over his attempts to kill negative stories related to Prince Harry’s lawsuit in the U.K., which alleged Lewis helped cover up News U.K.’s phone-hacking into celebrities including Harry and actor Hugh Grant.

The New York Times reported that Lewis criticized then-executive editor Buzbee’s plan to publish a story on the lawsuit involving Lewis, while NPR revealed a day later that Lewis promised the outlet an exclusive interview unveiling his business plans if it didn’t move forward with a December story outlining the U.K. case. Lewis and the Post have denied pressuring Buzbee to drop the story and Lewis lashed out at NPR reporter David Folkenfilk for his report, but he later walked back his attacks in meetings with staffers last week.

Still, those meetings didn’t offer much in the way of transparency. While Lewis outlined his plans for Winnett to shadow reporters and editors in the late summer before taking over the main newsroom in November, staffers told The Daily Beast he didn’t make quite clear how the “Third Newsroom,” as Lewis has repeatedly titled it, will function. Staffers were also unsure whether Lewis’ plans for Winnett to join the newsroom later this year would come to fruition.

Bezos’ note on Tuesday, however, indicates his respect for Lewis’ judgment will last a little longer.
