Stopping at the Winter Hill Yacht Club. The city of Somerville wants to take over this place by eminent domain for the nearby Assembly Square re-development project.

Strike that...I inquired, and the club is on government land, and the club has not paid their lease in a while. Also, it's only now that the club is threatened that they are talking about giving people access to the river and their parking lot.

Well, hopefully the City and the Club will find a good compromise.

This past Wednesday, William “Billy” Tauro and the great members of the Winter Hill Yacht Club hosted a Hawaiian Luau for the Somerville seniors at Somerville’s Winter Hill Yacht Club. And the best part of it is that it was all free of charge and “It was on Billy!”

Over one hundred Somerville Seniors were in attendance and enjoyed the festivities on Somerville’s Waterfront with Billy and the good people of the Winter Hill Yacht Club!

Many brought their dancing shoes and showed us how to use a “Hula Hoop” for the “Hawaiian Hula Hoop Contest!” There was a wonderful lunch, Hawaiian music, dancing, door prizes and lots of fun!

Billy Tauro and the good members of the Winter Hill Yacht Club will be hosting these events every month with a new theme event month. So stay tuned!

The next event will be the SOMERVILLE SENIOR’S AND VETERAN’S COUNTRY HOEDOWN LUNCHEON AT THE WINTER HILL YACHT CLUB on Wednesday July 14th from 12:00Noon-2:00PM for lunch and entertainment at Somerville’s Winter Hill Yacht Club located at 500 Artisan Way, Somerville, MA 02145. And the best part of it is that it’s all free of charge and “It’s on Billy” so come and enjoy the festivities on Somerville’s Waterfront with Billy and the good people of the Winter Hill Yacht Club! Somerville veterans hit the high seas

This past Sunday the members of the Winter Hill Yacht Club of Somerville and the Old Colony Yacht of Dorchester hosted their annual Veteran’s Cruise on the Boston Harbor.

The flotilla, carrying close to one hundred disabled American veterans on vessels that consisted of thirty eight donated privately owned boats from members of both yacht clubs, shoved off from the docks of the Winter Hill Yacht Club in Somerville and Old Colony Yacht Club in Dorchester. The flotilla went under police escort by Sergeant James Deyermond with a Massachusetts State Police boat, Sergeant Jim Hennessey with a Massachusetts Environmental Police boat, and Boston Police Officer Merrick aboard the Boston Police patrol boat, also participated.

The Boston Fire Department also escorted the flotilla of veterans with the Department’s fire boat, showering the path with a ceremonial fire hose spray salute to the heroes on board as they passed in front of the USS Constitution that was docked at its port in Charlestown.

Somerville Alderman Walter Pero addressed the crowd of veterans back at the Winter Hill Yacht Club at an old fashion barbecue that was hosted in its entirety by the members of the Winter Hill Yacht Club.

Alderman Pero, who is a war veteran himself, attended the event and announced that this was his last term in office and that he is also the last American veteran that is presently serving on the Board of Aldermen here in Somerville.

Somerville Council of Aging Director Cindy Hickey, Somerville Council of Aging Social worker Suzanne Norton, who also facilitates the veterans group, and Somerville Community Police Officer Maryann Manfra, as well as Chelsea Soldier’s Home Director John Davis, participated in the event by organizing and transporting bus loads of veterans, some in wheelchairs, to the event. They enjoyed a fun filled day on the water as a way of being thanked for their services and for all they have done for our country.

One veteran aboard one of the vessels said, “Today’s event was the second happiest day of my life. The first was the day my son was born.”

The veterans applauded and gave special thanks to the Commodores and to the members of the Winter Hill Yacht Club and Old Colony Yacht Club for making the event possible.

Winter hill yacht club provides neighborly safe haven, large motor boats from lynn and dorchester come to winter hill yacht club in somerville to weather hurricane irene..

They're rafting up and squeezing into spare dock space at : Large motor boats more accustomed to cruising Boston Harbor and coastal New England than navigating the Mystic River.

To escape the —high winds, monster tides, punishing waves and storm surges—boats from the Volunteer Yacht Club in Lynn and Old Colony Yacht Club in Dorchester have found a friendly safe haven in Somerville.

On Friday, the docks were full and Bill Rogers, commodore of the Somerville yacht club, was directing large boats, most about 40 feet long, into tight spaces where they were rafting up.

The yacht club is providing the space to about "30 outsiders that would normally be out in harm's way, out in the ocean," said Rogers.

Normally during a storm, some members of the Winter Hill Yacht Club would haul their boats out of the water and secure them, on land, in a lot adjacent to the club. This time, however, the lot is unavailable. It's under construction as part of the project.

So instead, boats are crowding the docks, and Rogers and other members of the club will "spearhead the thing all weekend long."

Winter Hill Yacht Club tends to be a relatively safe place to keep your boat in a storm, in large part thanks to the Amelia Earhart Dam, just to the southeast of the yacht club on the Mystic River.

The dam helps control the level of the river, protecting boats from the surges and tides of the open water. But the dam can cause difficulties, too, said Rogers. If dam operators lower the level of the river too fast, the boats will drop with the level of the water, and all those taught dock lines securing the vessels can snap. Cleats can get ripped out of decks, and boats can be let loose. It's not something you want to happen in the midst of a serious storm.

Despite the scramble to make everything ready for Irene, Rogers is only concerned "to a point." 

"You can't control mother nature," he said, so you do what you can and hope for the best.

Somerville firefighters battled a blaze on a boat docked near Assembly Square at the Winter Hill Yacht Club. The fire was contained to one boat by firefighters, who fought the fire on the dock and from a boat.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.

Live Boston reports a boat docked at the Winter Hill Yacht Club on the Mystic River near Assembly Row went up in flames and sunk this afternoon - and set another nearby boat on fire - around 5:30 p.m.

Somerville Firefighters Local 76 reports marine fire units from Boston, Cambridge and Medford joined the battle against the blaze.

Column Of Fire Engulfs Boat At Somerville Yacht Club

A boat at the Winter Hill Yacht Club on the Mystic river caught fire, bringing marine fire units from three nearby communities to help extinguish the flames.

Firefighters had to work aggressively to keep the fire from reaching other vessels.

Marine units from multiple nearby communities were called to assist.

The fire broke out at the yacht club marina, located on 500 Artisan Way in Assembly Row, in Somerville, around 5:20 p.m. on Wednesday, March 22, according to the Somerville Fire Department. 

One commuter was able to see the blaze while traveling on the Orange Line.

The fire fully involved the cabin cruiser style vessel.

"The fire was contained to the single vessel thanks to an aggressive attack from the dock using hand lines and by our marine unit partners from the water," the Somerville Fire Department said in a Facebook post. 

Firefighters from Boston, Cambridge, and Medford provided mutual aid to extinguish the flames. 

No injuries were reported from the incident, which was cleared by 6:45 p.m., the Somerville Fire Department told Daily Voice. 

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
