In response to an increase in demand for well-trained interior yacht crew, the Stewardess Training Academy was established in Palma in June 2016. Formed by Jess Barnard and Erin Bloom - former yacht crew stewardesses - the training academy aims to imbue both inexperienced and experienced interior crew with the skills to offer exceptional service and a distinguished sense of professionalism.

yacht interior training

"When we started the academy, we thought that we would mainly be working with green stews, but, to our surprise, we have been training a lot of stews with a few years' experience in the industry. It can be hard for stews that already have experience to admit they need training, but some boats don't have the time to conduct formal training on board, so it makes sense that they want to do certified courses, " commented Bloom.

The academy partners with many other organisations to offer a diverse range of courses - each of which is designed to develop stews' long-term career aspirations and boost their confidence. Course topics include an introduction to the interior, food service, barista, silver service, floristry and plant care, yoga, and wine. With competition for yacht crew jobs increasing, it is essential to maximise your skillset; building a strong arsenal of skills can open more doors to jobs on yachts .

yacht interior training

Set in a beautiful 3-storey villa in the heart of Alaro, Palma, the Stewardess Training Academy provides a memorable learning experience, as well as a sure-fire way to a enhance your skills. The beautiful island was selected as the academy's base due to its importance as an international yachting hub. Currently, many yacht crew live on the island, but there are few interior training facilities in the region. Jess and Erin recognise the transient nature of the yachting industry and are committed to evolving with industry demand.

Bloom commented on the academy and the students that enrolled there: "Since we started the business we've received a constant influx of emails, and have had girls (and guys) signing up for courses all the way into the summer months. I think this is indicative of the importance placed on interior training, not only by employers but also by interior crews themselves. Yachting is more competitive than in the past and green crew especially are looking to do more courses to give themselves the edge. So too, employers call on this as a deciding factor not only in the employment of newbies that have additional skills but also as testament of crew members that are more committed and that choose to invest in themselves and their careers. I believe that the same is true for seasoned crew. We were surprised to find that our courses are most popular among steward/esses that already have various years of experience and are still seeking extra tutelage.

Various associations are campaigning for there to be a set standard and we too see the need just through the students, employers and recruiters that desire interior crew to have additional training. There is an all round call for interior roles and training to carry more weight. We have also found that stewards and stewardesses often require training as a confidence boost. As so many boats are unique in the ways that things are done and with longevity perhaps limiting a broadened experience, many seek to brush up on their skills or require the affirmation that what they have learned is correct and of a high enough standard in order to progress in their roles. "

yacht interior training

To date, many interior crew have taken advantage of Jess and Erin's experience and knowledge. Leanne Eldridge, one of the course's former students, said: "[It was a] fantastic, practical and very thorough course. It was so great to be taught by, and have questions answered by, ladies who have so much industry experience. Both Erin and Jess were super helpful, accommodating, and fun. I would highly recommend [the course]! "

Thomas Percival also paid testament to the academy and the organisers: "This course was very informative and great fun. I learned lots of useful skills for the future. The instructors were very friendly and approachable. "

The Stewardess Bible

The Stewardess Bible

Making Life Easier For Every Superyacht Stewardess

For every superyacht stewardess and chief stewardess aiming for excellence, “The Stewardess Bible” and “The Chief Stewardess Bible” are your ultimate and invaluable go-to resources. These original guides, unmatched in their depth and utility, have set the gold standard in yacht stewardess training, despite numerous attempts to replicate their success.

These books offer indispensable insights and solutions for handling service-oriented or operational challenges onboard for less than the cost of a night out in Porto Cervo or St. Tropez. The primary purpose of these guides is to streamline daily tasks, making them more efficient, time-saving, and stress-free for superyacht stewardess managers.

These resources are essential companions for anyone serious about their career in the superyacht industry.

“The Stewardess Bible’s Guide to Achieving Excellence in Service (Module One)” is a culmination of over 22 years of top-end hospitality experience. Initially, the yachting industry seemed like a never-ending party, with its tax-free salary and all-expenses-paid lifestyle. However, beyond the glamour, the real charm of the profession lies in working amidst some of the most beautiful and exotic destinations our planet has to offer.

Professional happiness came from working with a diverse group of social misfits and adventure seekers. My transition from sailing yachts to mega-sized motor yachts was a natural progression, driven by my love for the industry. The decision to write “The Stewardess Bible” came from recognizing a significant gap in the available theoretical support for the superyacht interior department.

The journey to completing the book was an adventure filled with balancing website maintenance, family life, and overcoming writer’s block. This therapeutic and rewarding process taught me much about patience and humility. The end result is a comprehensive guide that offers invaluable advice for everyone, from junior yacht stewardesses to management-level chief stewardesses. It includes step-by-step instructions, detailed how-to lists, theoretical information, and practical examples designed to address real-life challenges faced on board.

“ The Stewardess Bible” is an unparalleled resource that fills a critical gap in the superyacht industry, providing a solid foundation of knowledge and practical solutions. Its guidance is essential for managing the unique demands of luxury yacht service. However, while this guide is an excellent theoretical resource, it is not a substitute for hands-on training or relevant courses. “I strongly encourage diligent research when selecting a training school to ensure comprehensive learning”.

For any questions about “The Stewardess Bible’or The Chief Stewardess Bible,” please do not hesitate to contact me. I am always more than happy to assist and provide further insights to help you excel in your superyacht career.

Child abuse training and technical assistance center, child forensic interview training for california.

Cost: Free to CA residents
Length: Approximately 10 hours of at-home prerequisite, plus

4 days of in-person training
CECs: Available for a fee

Description

The Child Forensic Interview Training for California (CFIT) is an introductory course intended for new child forensic interview specialists. This course introduces child forensic interviewing within the context of:

  • multidisciplinary team investigations
  • interviewer and team responsibilities
  • interview models and techniques
  • development of language and cognition as it applies to interviewing
  • disclosure dynamics
  • childhood trauma as it relates to interviewing
  • interviewing individuals with special needs, and
  • cultural competency

CIR’s Child Abuse Training and Technical  Assistance Centers work in partnership with many of California’s top forensic interviewing experts to update and revise the CFIT Curriculum on a consistent basis. Video of actual interviews are shown and experiential exercises and role-play activities are interwoven throughout the training. Video of actual interviews are shown throughout the training.

Completion of CFIT does not certify you to conduct child forensic interviews. Consult your County CAC/MDT for local requirements.

The in-person CFIT is 4 days. It is offered at least twice per year in both Northern and Southern California (4 CFITs total). Participants are required to complete approximately 10 hours of prerequisite work online before being eligible to attend an in-person training.

CFIT is offered to people currently conducting forensic interviews through a multi-disciplinary center or team as part of their jobs. Because of limited space, we often have to limit the training to two participants per county, at least initially. CATTA staff reviews applicants and corresponds with children’s advocacy centers and multi-disciplinary teams from the applicant’s county to determine an individual’s eligibility for the training.

Yes, the training is POST approved.

The training has been approved by NCA as meeting the Forensic Interview Standard related to training. The total course hours (37.5) exceed the minimum NCA standard of 32.

Interviewers attending this training should maintain their certificate demonstrating completion. When a CAC participates in the NCA accreditation process, it will be required to submit documentation for each interviewer conducting forensic interviews at their CAC.

CIR is not able to “save spaces” for CFIT.

Applicants must complete and submit the CFIT application form, which is emailed to all CAC contacts when a training date is identified. Applications will be reviewed and submitted to the applicant's CAC or MDT for approval within one week of submission. Once an applicant receives approval, they will have access to the online prerequisite materials.

Upon completion of the prerequisite work, participants will be added to CIR’s list of those eligible to attend the 4-day in-person portion of the training. Participants are not given a spot in the in-person training until they have completed the prerequisites.

Participation will be limited to two per county until all the counties have had the chance to apply.

Upon completion of the 4-day in-person training, participants will receive a Certificate of Attendance and, if applicable, POST or CEC credit.

Each type of credit is calculated differently. Certificates of attendance are available for both the in-person portion of CFIT (27.5 hours) and the online prerequisites (10 hours), for a total of 37.5 hours. Continuing Education Credits or CECs are available for the active in-person portion of the training (27.5 hours). Because Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) uses a different formula, POST calculates CFIT attendance at 30 hours.

JL Designs & Interiors LLC offers complete interior design services. Our expertise spans from designing and laying out the space (the space plan), working with architectural plans, assisting with the lighting and cabinetry, recommending finish materials, advocating between you and the contractors, and assisting you with furnishings and window treatments.

Jeanette Loretz, principal of JL Designs & Interiors LLC, comes to Interior Design with a diverse and varied background that serves her well in approaching projects from many avenues. Jeanette received her Bachelor's Degree in Social Welfare and then became a certified paralegal before starting her Interior Design career over 12 years ago.

Attaining an Interior Designer certificate with honors from Canada College, Jeanette is certified in Residential Design, Commercial Design and Kitchen and Bath. She was the Past President of the California Peninsula Chapter of the American Society of Interior Designers and a member of the NKBA (National Kitchen and Bath Association), a member of NARI (National Association of the Remodeling Industry), and is a Certified Interior Designer recognized by the State of California.

Born and raised in the San Francisco Bay Area, Jeanette attended St. Francis High School in Mountain View - a school that she, her husband and three children all attended! She is a strong supporter of her community, and maintains active membership with St. Simon Church and the Los Altos Chamber of Commerce.

What's Jeanette's Design Style?

Clients often ask Jeanette about her design style. Is it Contemporary? Traditional? Transitional? French Country? Asian?

A good designer may have their favorite styles, but a trained Interior Design meets the needs and tastes of their individual clients. The most important skill a designer can bring to any project is an ability to listen. When an Interior Designer listens carefully to the preferences, how a space will function, and accentuate architectural features or attributes, then interiors will reflect a client's unique and lasting style.
