Phrase Finder
- Son of a gun
What's the meaning of the phrase 'Son of a gun'?
A ‘son of a gun’ is a rogue or scamp – “you are naughty, you old son of a gun”. The phrase is also used, although this is uncommon outside the USA, as a euphemism for ‘ son of a bitch ‘.
Some say that the origin is ‘son of a military man’ but, whether this is the correct origin or not, the phrase is no longer used to convey that meaning.
What's the origin of the phrase 'Son of a gun'?
There is dispute amongst etymologists about the origin of this phrase. As always, disputes only occur where there is no definitive evidence so I’ll put the sources here and let you decide for yourself. The two points of view are primarily these:
1. The phrase originated as ‘son of a military man’ (that is, a gun) .
The most commonly repeated version in this strand is that the British Navy used to allow women to live on naval ships. Any child born on board who had uncertain paternity would be listed in the ship’s log as ‘son of a gun’. This is attestable fact as, although the Royal navy had rules against it, they did turn a blind eye to women (wives or prostitutes) joining sailors on voyages, so this version has plausibility on its side.
The sources for the point of view that ‘son of a gun’ is ‘son of a military man’ are:
– Jon Badcock’s, Slang: A Dictionary of the Turf , 1823:
[ son of a gun means ] ‘a soldier’s bastard’.
– The Sailor’s Word-Book: an alphabetical digest of nautical terms , William Henry Smyth, 1867:
[ a son of a gun is ] “An epithet conveying contempt in a slight degree, and originally applied to boys born afloat, when women were permitted to accompany their husbands at sea; one admiral declared he literally was thus cradled, under the breast of a gun-carriage”.
The first known printed example of ‘son of a gun’ in print is The British Apollo No. 43 , 1708:
“You’r a Son of a Gun”.
That source doesn’t mention the military and all the explanations that link ‘son of a gun’ to the military come 150 years or more later. However, Smyth was himself a Royal Navy admiral and in a better position than most to know what went on aboard naval ships. Whether or not the military/naval version is the origin it is clear that, in 1823 at least, the term was used with that meaning.
Counter to that you might think it unusual that military men didn’t appear to have daughters, or you may just put that down to the prevailing sexism of the time. There are several phrases including the word son:
Every mother’s son Go on my son Like father, like son My son the doctor Number one son On me ‘ead, son
whereas it’s difficult to think of anything other than ‘don’t put your daughter on the stage’ for daughters.
2. The term is euphemistic and derived as a conveniently rhyming alternative to ‘son of a bitch/whore’.
‘ Son of a bitch ‘ has been part of the language for centuries, certainly long enough for people to some up with a euphemistic variant for it. Shakespeare used something like it in King Lear , 1605:
“One that art nothing but the composition of a Knave, Begger, Coward, Pandar, and the Sonne and Heire of a Mungrill Bitch.”
The military version has some circumstantial evidence to support it, the rhyming euphemism origin appears to be no more than conjecture.

Son of a Gun is a thrilling crime drama film that keeps viewers on the edge of their seats from start to finish. Directed by Julius Avery, the movie stars Ewan McGregor as Brendan Lynch, a notorious criminal who takes a young inmate named JR (Brenton Thwaites) under his wing. As the story unfolds, audiences are left with many questions about the film’s ending. In this article, we will delve into the Son of a Gun ending and attempt to provide some clarity.
The film centers around a complex heist plot involving gold mining and prison escapes. Throughout the movie, we witness the growth of the relationship between Brendan and JR, as they navigate through dangerous situations together. However, as the climax approaches, tensions rise, and loyalties are tested.
In the final act of Son of a Gun, Brendan and JR successfully execute their plan to steal gold from a mine. They manage to escape with their lives and make it to an awaiting helicopter. At this point, it seems like they have triumphed against all odds.
However, just when it appears that everything is going according to plan, a twist occurs. It is revealed that Brendan has been playing JR all along. He betrays him by leaving him stranded in the middle of nowhere with no means of escape.
This shocking turn of events leaves viewers stunned and questioning Brendan’s motives. Why would he turn against someone he had taken under his wing? Was their friendship merely a ploy for his own benefit?
One possible explanation for Brendan’s actions could be his desire for self-preservation. Throughout the film, it is clear that he is willing to do whatever it takes to ensure his own survival. By leaving JR behind, he eliminates any potential threats or loose ends that could jeopardize his freedom.
Another interpretation could be that Brendan saw something in JR that reminded him too much of himself – someone who was willing to do anything for personal gain. By betraying JR, Brendan may have been trying to teach him a lesson about the harsh realities of the criminal world.
The ending of Son of a Gun is intentionally ambiguous, leaving room for individual interpretation. It raises questions about loyalty, trust, and the lengths people are willing to go to protect themselves. It also serves as a reminder that in the criminal underworld, no one can be trusted completely.
In conclusion, the ending of Son of a Gun leaves audiences with mixed emotions. While it may be disappointing to see Brendan betray JR after their seemingly strong bond, it also serves as a powerful reminder of the harsh realities of the criminal world. The film’s ambiguous ending allows viewers to draw their own conclusions about the characters’ motivations and serves as a thought-provoking conclusion to an intense crime drama.

The spectacular naval origin of the phrase, ‘son of a gun’
By Blake Stilwell
Updated on Jun 15, 2023 8:17 AM PDT
These days, Americans are less likely to exclaim “ son of a gun ” than the more-explicit “ son of a b*tch, ” but there was a time when “son of a gun” itself was not used in mixed company — and that time was more than 200 years after the age of sail.
It seems the Royal Navy , while not keen on having women aboard its ships, sometimes overlooked the practice. Different times throughout its history saw sailors of the Royal Navy either bring either their wives or lovers aboard ships that might be out at sea for a while. While it wasn’t officially tolerated, there are instances of a ship’s company turning a blind eye to it.
![you motorboatin son of a gun Son of a gun](https://www.wearethemighty.com/wp-content/uploads/legacy/assets.rbl.ms/19113962/origin.jpg?strip=all&quality=95)
Everyone aboard a ship was counted in the ship’s log back in those days. The log was a detailed account of who was working, who came aboard, who left, who died, etc. It also kept track of who was born aboard one of the King or Queen’s ships. It was uncommon, but it did happen. Women had to get around the world just like anyone else. The Royal Navy kept this count, just like any other ship.
But say there was one of the aforementioned female guests aboard a ship. If that woman just happened to give birth aboard ship, that child would have to be kept in the log. If a child was born with uncertain paternity — that is to say, there were too many possibilities as to who the father could be — the newborn still had to be counted in the log.
![you motorboatin son of a gun Son of a gun maury show](https://www.wearethemighty.com/wp-content/uploads/legacy/assets.rbl.ms/19113976/origin.jpg?strip=all&quality=95)
If this was the case, the child’s name was recorded as the “son of a gun” — the son of a seaman below decks. Eventually, the common use of the phrase began to refer to any child born aboard a ship, even those of officers accompanied by their wives. Then, it began to refer to any child of a military man , not just the bastard children of sailors.
Some 200-plus years later, it’s used to lovingly refer to a mischievous person or as an expression of awe or esteem. To use an expletive or insult in the same vein, we’ve moved on as a society. Who knows where language will go next?

What we know about the Trump rally shooting, victims and gunman
President Biden told the nation to “cool it down” during an Oval Office speech after the FBI said a gunman, Thomas Matthew Crooks, tried to assassinate Donald Trump.
Former president Donald Trump said he was shot in the ear at his Saturday rally, as TV cameras captured the dramatic moment when he ducked from the lectern mid-speech and the sounds of gunfire popped. The FBI said that it was investigating it as a potential assassination attempt and that the shooter was Thomas Matthew Crooks , 20, of Bethel Park, Pa. President Biden called on Americans to “cool it down” during an address from the Oval Office on Sunday evening, referring to what he called “very heated” political rhetoric. Here’s what we know.
- The FBI hasn’t identified a motive for the gunman, special agent Kevin Rojek said. Officials said the shooter’s father legally purchased the AR-style rifle used in the attack, but there’s no evidence the father bought it for his son. Investigators haven’t found indications of mental health issues in the shooter’s behavior, Rojek said.
- Three spectators were shot, one who was killed and two who were critically injured. The shooter was also killed. Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro (D) identified the spectator who was killed as Butler County, Pa., resident Corey Comperatore .
- Trump went to Milwaukee on Sunday for the Republican National Convention, as planned. Biden said in a news conference Sunday afternoon that he directed the Secret Service to ensure Trump’s continued safety and to review security protocol at the convention, which begins Monday.
- Republicans and Democrats denounced the violence. Some of Trump’s top allies blamed Biden and his supporters of using rhetoric that spurred the attack, while other politicians urged Americans to avoid making the attack about politics
- Lawmakers have said they will investigate the attack , demanding documents and testimony from the U.S. Secret Service . House Oversight Chairman James Comer (R-Ky.) called for Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle to appear before the committee next week.
The shooter
Investigators haven’t “identified an ideology associated” with the gunman, Rojek said. The shooter used an AR-style rifle chambered in 5.56mm, a common caliber for such weapons, Rojek said.
“The information that we have indicates that the shooter acted alone and that there are currently no public safety concerns,” Rojek said.
Authorities are investigating explosive material found in the gunman’s vehicle, Rojek said. In an update Sunday night, the FBI said it found a second “suspicious device” in his home. Both devices were rendered safe and the materials are being analyzed by the agency’s lab, the statement said, adding that investigators were trying to determine Crooks’s movements before the shooting.
Biden asked for patience in the investigation.
“I urge everyone, everyone, please don’t make assumptions about his motives or his affiliations,” he said in his afternoon news conference. “Let the FBI do their job, and their partner agencies do their job.”
The victims
Comperatore was an avid supporter of the former president and was at the rally with his family, Shapiro said. He died shielding his family from the bullets.
Two victims were taken to Allegheny General Hospital, a trauma center about 30 miles away in Pittsburgh. Both seriously injured victims — David Dutch, 57, of New Kensington, Pa., and James Copenhaver, 74, of Moon Township, Pa. — were in critical condition, according to Candace Herrington, a hospital spokeswoman.
Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) called the shooting “despicable,” and several Republicans lauded the former president. “We all know President Trump is stronger than his enemies,” North Dakota Gov. Doug Burgum (R) said on X , sharing a photo of a bloodied Trump raising his fist after the shooting. “Today he showed it.”
Some industry leaders like Tesla CEO Elon Musk and hedge fund manager Bill Ackman formally endorsed Trump in the aftermath of the shooting.

In a social media post Sunday morning, Trump thanked supporters for their thoughts and prayers, saying “it was God alone who prevented the unthinkable from happening.”
“Our love goes out to the other victims and their families,” Trump posted on his social media platform.
He added: “In this moment, it is more important than ever that we stand united.”
Biden, who spoke to Trump following the attack, addressed the nation Sunday night calling for calm and unity. “It’s time to cool it down,” Biden said, referring to the heated political rhetoric across the country.
Sen. J.D. Vance (R-Ohio), who like Burgum is being touted as a possible running mate for Trump, blamed Biden for the attack.
“The central premise of the Biden campaign is that President Donald Trump is an authoritarian fascist who must be stopped at all costs,” Vance wrote on X. “That rhetoric led directly to President Trump’s attempted assassination.”
Sen. John Fetterman (D-Pa.) told Americans to “focus on the tragedy of what happened here” and avoid making it about politics.
Dave McCormick, a Republican running for U.S. Senate in Pennsylvania told The Washington Post that the “overcharged rhetoric” on both sides of the aisle contributed to the attack, and he noted a “dehumanizing” political environment.
What’s next?
The attack happened two days before the start of the Republican National Convention, to be held Monday through Thursday in Milwaukee, where Trump is set to be selected as the Republican presidential nominee. Trump advisers told aides that the convention will continue as planned; the focus is likely to be more on Trump’s “courage and his resilience,” a person close to him told The Washington Post, adding that planners want speakers to dial down the rhetoric.
Ron Kaufman , a Republican National Committee delegate from Massachusetts, said the mood in Milwaukee ahead of the convention was one of “shock and disbelief.”
“There’s a feeling,” Kaufman wrote in a text message, “that the Democrats’ constant pounding on President Trump as ‘a threat to democracy’ leads to this.”
Trump has himself often used inflammatory language, calling his political enemies “vermin” and warning of a “bloodbath” if he does not win in November.
Milwaukee Mayor Cavalier Johnson (D) said he joined a bipartisan coalition that successfully lobbied Congress to increase the grant for convention security from $60 million to $75 million.
“We want to make sure we have not just a safe convention,” Johnson said, “but a safe city.”
Devlin Barrett, Annie Gowen, Colby Itkowitz, Michael Scherer, Brittany Shammas, Praveena Somasundaram and Perry Stein contributed to this report.
The shooter: The FBI named 20-year-old Thomas Matthew Crooks of Bethel Park, Pa., who is now dead, as the gunman. Federal investigators determined that the rifle used was legally purchased by the gunman’s father in 2013, according to a person familiar with the investigation.
Victims: The man killed at the rally was Corey Comperatore , a married father of two daughters who Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro (D) said died trying to protect his family. The two rally attendees who were critically injured were identified as David Dutch and James Copenhaver.
Layout of shooting site: The Washington Post built a 3D model of the site of the attempted assassination at a Donald Trump rally in Pennsylvania based on more than 40 videos and photos. The Post’s analysis found that two Secret Service countersniper teams may not have been able to see the shooter at first.
Secret Service: Growing evidence that law enforcement were made aware of the shooter before he opened fire has put the Secret Service under pressure to explain what analysts have described as a major security failure .
Online conspiracy theories: A torrent of unsubstantiated theories flooded social media and other channels, fueling false and dueling narratives .

The assassination attempt against former President Donald J. Trump at his rally Saturday evening, besides wounding him, also killed a father of two and critically wounded two other men on Saturday evening.
Those attendees, all adult men, include a longtime volunteer firefighter and a U.S. Marine Corps veteran. All were from the Pittsburgh area, according to the Pennsylvania State Police. One died at the scene, while two others were transported to Allegheny General Hospital in Pittsburgh and were in critical but stable condition, officials said.
As more details began to emerge on Sunday, tributes and prayers for the victims and their families were pouring in, including from officials such as Mayor Ed Gainey of Pittsburgh and Pennsylvania’s governor, Josh Shapiro.
Steve Bicehouse, director of emergency services for Butler County, said that he had set up set up a “portable hospital” with four of his staff members and about 30 medical professionals. Mr. Bicehouse said that he was not aware of any other shooting-related victims at the rally besides Mr. Trump and the three attendees.
Here’s what we know so far about the victims.
Corey Comperatore
Corey Comperatore, 50, was fatally shot in the head after he dove to shield family members who had accompanied him to the rally, according to the governor.
Governor Shapiro said on Sunday that Mr. Comperatore “died a hero,” adding: “Corey was the very best of us.”
Mr. Comperatore was a father of two from Sarver, Pa., worked at a plastic manufacturing company and loved fishing. He spent several years as a volunteer firefighter, at one point serving as the chief of the Buffalo Township Volunteer Fire Company. He attended nearby Cabot Church, where he was selected as a future trustee in 2021, helping oversee issues like church property and insurance.
In interviews, friends and neighbors described him as a “good man,” dedicated to his wife and two daughters and to his service as a firefighter.
Kip Johnston, the current chief of the fire company, said that Mr. Comperatore was his chief for about three years. “He was a great leader,” he said. “You couldn’t meet a more humble guy.”
A neighbor, Matt Achilles, recalled when Mr. Comperatore asked if there was anyone in need for him to donate a Christmas ham. Mr. Comperatore gave one to a single mother with five children.
David Dutch
David Dutch, 57, of New Kensington, Pa., has been working at Siemens for decades, according to Jennifer Veri-Grazier, his sister. He served in the Marine Corps and was a leader in his local chapter of the Marine Corps League, a service and advocacy organization, according to a news release.
“Our immediate support continues for David and his family as he continues his recovery from this attack,” said Warren Griffin, national commandant and chief executive officer of the Marine Corps League, in the statement. “We offer solace for David and his family along with eternal thoughts and prayers for all the victims of this tragedy.”
Mr. Dutch has been a longtime Trump supporter, along with other members of his family, Ms. Veri-Grazier said. She saw a picture of her brother before he headed out on Saturday, wearing a flag dress shirt and sunglasses. He seemed “ecstatic,” she said.
Now, he is hospitalized with damage to his liver and broken ribs, awaiting another surgery, she said.
“He was exercising his rights and went to the rally, and he didn’t deserve any of this,” Ms. Veri-Grazier said.
James Copenhaver
Mr. Copenhaver, 74, is from Moon Township, Pa. Records showed that he was registered as a Democrat. He is married with at least one son and plays in a band, according to his friends.
Larry Wheeler, who went to high school with Mr. Copenhaver, said that just last week they talked about Mr. Trump — though Mr. Wheeler said he didn’t know that Mr. Copenhaver would be going to the rally.
Mr. Trump was talking about immigration when gunshots first rang out. Alicia Rath, a rally attendee, said that she had crawled over to help Mr. Copenhaver, who was lying high up on the bleachers to Mr. Trump’s left.
Ms. Rath, 45, from Valencia, Pa., noticed that he had been shot in the abdomen and was breathing abnormally.
“Hi, what’s your name?” Ms. Rath recalled asking.
“Jim,” Mr. Copenhaver replied.
“Jim, I’m going to pray for you,” Ms. Rath said. She said she did so until two officers came to get him.
Albert Quaye, a supervisor in Moon Township, said he first met Mr. Copenhaver a few years ago at a local board of supervisors meeting, which Mr. Copenhaver had attended to share concerns about a development project near his home. He seemed to catch the local politics bug then and kept returning to meetings, Mr. Quaye said. “He would be there sometimes with us through late-night meetings,” he said.
Mr. Copenhaver was retired, according to Mr. Quaye. Mr. Copenhaver worked at the Pennsylvania Liquor Control Board from 1988, when he started as a clerk, until 2009, according to Shawn Kelly, a spokesman for the board. Mr. Copenhaver retired as general manager of the state-operated liquor store in Aliquippa, Pa., about 10 miles north of Moon Township.
Joseph Palombo, now the general manager at the store where Mr. Copenhaver had held the same position, said they occasionally worked together years ago. He said that Mr. Copenhaver loved music and was in a band. “He used to always tell me to come check them out,” Mr. Palombo said. “I never did.”
Mr. Quaye said he was optimistic about his friend’s prognosis. “Jim’s a healthy 74,” he said.

Our Coverage of the Trump Rally Shooting
The Investigation : The motives of the 20-year-old gunman who tried to assassinate former President Donald Trump remain a mystery , even after the F.B.I. gained access to his cellphone .
How the Security Broke Down : The Secret Service is facing questions about why the building from which the gunman fired was left out of the security perimeter. It’s also unclear whether the local forces used the same building as the shooter.
The Gunman : In interviews, former classmates of the suspect described him as intelligent but solitary , someone who tried to avoid teasing by his classmates, and who grew up in an area where hunting and target shooting have long been popular pastimes.
Trump Devotees React : Some of Trump’s followers had long viewed him as handpicked by God. The attempted assassination has only increased such quasi-religious rhetoric .
Online Conspiracy Theories : Soon after the shooting, claims that President Biden and his allies ordered the attack on Trump, or that Trump staged the shooting, spread fast across social media .

15 Things You Should Never Say to a Legal Gun Owner
Posted: March 24, 2024 | Last updated: March 24, 2024
What 'not' to say to a legal gun owner
Conversations around gun ownership in the United States can be as volatile as a powder keg, and it's easy to light the fuse with a single misguided comment. If you aim for a respectful dialogue instead of a verbal shootout, here's a list of phrases best avoided. Loaded with insights, this guide may just prevent your next discussion on gun rights from going off half-cocked.
1. 'Why do you need a gun?'
Imagine asking someone, "Why do you need freedom of speech?" Owning a gun in the United States is a constitutional right, not a "need." People have various reasons for owning firearms, from self-defense to hunting and sport shooting. Questioning the "need" implies you know better than they do when it comes to their personal choices or safety concerns. A tad condescending, don't you think?
2. 'You must be paranoid.'
Paranoia? Really? Owning a gun doesn't mean someone is donning a tinfoil hat and waiting for the sky to fall. For many, it's about personal safety, the safety of loved ones, or even the enjoyment of shooting as a sport. Labeling someone as paranoid for exercising a constitutional right is a bit of a stretch.
3. 'Guns are the problem.'
Ah, the reductionist argument that blames an inanimate object for the complexities of human behavior and societal issues. Gun violence is a serious matter but boiling it down to "guns are the problem" ignores the multifaceted factors like mental health, socio-economic conditions, and more. It's not as black and white as some would like to believe.
4. 'Gun-free zones work.'
Cute idea, except for the pesky detail that many public shootings occur in designated gun-free zones. The concept ignores the fact that those bent on doing harm are not likely to be deterred by a sign on the door.
5. 'The Second Amendment is outdated.'
The notion that any part of the Constitution is "outdated" opens a can of worms. Are other rights outdated too? The Second Amendment exists for multiple reasons, and its modern applicability is still a topic of fervent debate. Dismissing it as "outdated" is dismissive of that ongoing conversation.
6. 'You're compensating for something.'
Oh, the classic Freudian jab. This cliché suggests that owning a gun is a form of overcompensation for personal inadequacies. It's a cheap shot (pun intended) that does nothing to further a constructive conversation about gun ownership or gun control.
7. 'You must be a Republican.'
Ah, yes, because only Republicans appreciate constitutional rights? Gun ownership exists across the political spectrum, and assuming otherwise only serves to perpetuate divisions and stereotypes.
8. 'Only the police should have guns.'
Entrusting an entire society's safety solely to the police assumes an infallibility that no institution possesses. It also ignores the importance some place on personal freedom and self-defense.
9. 'It's too easy to get a gun.'
Before making this sweeping statement, perhaps consider the background checks, waiting periods, and federal and state laws that exist. "Easy" is a relative term and assumes that current laws aren't stringent or effective.
10. 'Assault weapon bans work.'
Defining "assault weapon" is notoriously tricky, and evidence on the effectiveness of bans is mixed. Saying they "work" is a one-size-fits-all statement that ignores the complexities of the issue.
11. 'Only criminals have guns.'
If this were true, we'd have a country full of criminals. Millions of law-abiding Americans own guns for a variety of legitimate purposes. Conflating legal gun ownership with criminal activity is not just inaccurate; it's disrespectful to a large part of the population.
12. 'You shouldn't have a gun if you have kids.'
This one assumes that gun owners are inherently irresponsible when it comes to storage and safety. Many gun owners who are parents take extra precautions to ensure their firearms are stored safely, away from their children. Just like you'd childproof your home for other hazards, the same goes for firearms.
13. 'You must be a gun nut.'
For some reason, an interest in firearms gets stigmatized as an obsession or a sign of paranoia. Let's remember that owning a gun doesn't necessarily make someone a "gun nut" any more than owning a car makes someone a "car nut." People own guns for various reasons: sport, hunting, and self-defense, among others. Labeling someone as a "gun nut" simply for owning a gun is a dismissive way to avoid more nuanced conversations about individual rights and responsibilities.
14. 'Guns kill people.'
This is the "IT argument" that gets rolled out in every gun debate. While it's true that firearms can be used to harm others, placing the blame solely on the inanimate object oversimplifies a complex issue. Most legal gun owners would point out that a gun, like a car or a knife, is a tool; it requires a human to operate it. They argue that the focus should be on responsible ownership and usage, rather than demonizing the object itself. This phrase can shut down meaningful dialogue about issues like gun safety, mental health, and responsible ownership.
15. 'You're part of the problem.'
The ol' blame game—a classic! By declaring a legal gun owner as "part of the problem," you're not just tossing a Molotov cocktail into a nuanced debate; you're also casually ignoring the fact that many gun owners are fervent advocates for responsible gun use and safety measures. Way to lump everyone together! This kind of accusatory tone isn't just an over-simplification; it's a conversation ender. If the goal is to alienate someone rather than discuss the complexities of gun ownership and societal issues, then bravo, mission accomplished!

Would-be Donald Trump assassin Thomas Matthew Crooks was possibly spotted lurking around the former president’s campaign rally an hour before the shooting.
New footage from Saturday’s rally shows Crooks walking back and forth near a building just outside the secured perimeter at around 5:06 p.m., Pittsburgh’s Action News 4 reports .
Crooks, whose face was not clearly visible in the video, could be seen looking around the area behind the fencing listlessly just a few feet away from the avid Donald Trump fans waiting for the former president to kick off the event.

The gunman opened fire with an AR-style semi-automatic rifle from the roof of a building about 130 yards from Trump at 6:11 p.m.
The cameraman who captured the chilling scene said he just wanted to get a panning shot of the crowd when he realized hours later that he may have caught the gunman was canvassing the area.
“ When I saw the video last night, when I was going back through my video clips and saw him, I was chilled to the point where I couldn’t fall asleep right away,” the cameraman, who did not want to give his name, told News 4.
The video appears to be the latest evidence of Crooks suspicious behavior in the moments leading up to the shooting.
Crooks was spotted by law enforcement officers, using a rangefinder and looking at a phone, nearly an hour before Trump took the stage.

He first caught the eye of law enforcement around 3 p.m. that day when he passed through the security screening area with the rangefinder, a device similar to binoculars used by hunters, according to Pittsburgh’s WXPI.
At around 5:30 p.m., a Beaver County Emergency Services Unit officer took a picture of Crooks crawling on the ground and seemingly scoping out a spot for the assassination attempt.
About 15 minutes later, the cop spotted Crooks a second time, now on the roof, and took a second picture and called it into the command center.
Despite the call, Crooks would go on to fire at Trump 26 minutes later, injuring the former president and two other men and killing a hero firefighter Corey Comperatore.

Film Review: ‘Son of a Gun’
Ewan McGregor and Brenton Thwaites star in Julius Avery's debut feature, an entertaining if stylistically inconsistent heist pic.

At least three entertaining films are jostling for position in Australian writer-director Julius Avery’s messily propulsive debut feature, “Son of a Gun” — and if none ultimately emerges dominant, the red-blooded tussle between them is never dull to watch. Beginning as tough-minded prison drama, careering into daffily escapist caper territory and concluding somewhere in between, this London Film Festival competition entry casts Ewan McGregor brashly against type as a grizzled master thief mentoring a teenage inmate ( Brenton Thwaites ) through a high-stakes heist that goes inevitably off-plan. Slicker than it is smart — notwithstanding some strained chess metaphors — Avery’s film packs only moderate crossover potential, but serves as a neat calling card for bigger-ticket genre assignments. Released earlier this week Down Under, “Gun” has already secured U.S. distribution with A24.
“Things are not as you imagine,” a character intones at more than one juncture in “Son of a Gun,” as the action grows ever farther-fetched. It’s one of numerous stock lines in Avery’s busy script, and one that inadvertently alludes to the film’s own odd, shape-shifting quality: Just as viewers might think they have a handle on its genre identity, “Gun” turns out to have other ideas. To what degree Avery is driving these tonal and stylistic transitions is open to question. At best, the pic serves as a showy grab-bag of thriller varieties for which the helmer demonstrates equal aptitude; at worst, it points to a narrative attention span that hasn’t yet evolved from his award-winning short film work. (2008’s “Jerrycan” was honored at the Cannes, Berlin and Sundance festivals.)

The pic’s hard-edged opening salvo expressly recalls David Mackenzie’s recent “Starred Up” as it introduces J.R. (fast-rising star Thwaites), a 19-year-old petty criminal beginning a six-month sentence at a rough adult penitentiary in Western Australia. Very much a boy among men, J.R. — who has little of his “Dallas” namesake’s guile — is immediately vulnerable to bullying and attempted rape at the hands of older inmates, until he scores a protection deal with Lynch (McGregor, heavily bearded at the outset), a dangerous alpha-male convict hatching an intricate escape plan.
Popular on Variety
A tentative father-son bond has been established by the time J.R. is paroled and sets the plan into motion from the outside. The hitherto gritty drama, meanwhile, shifts into a more heightened action-movie mode: Complete with extravagant firearms and a hijacked helicopter, the prison break itself is a grandly outlandish setpiece worthy of the late Tony Scott. With all the principals on the outside, the film then morphs into a fairly conventional gangster drama. J.R. and Lynch’s crew fall in with Eastern European crime lord Lennox (Jacek Koman), agreeing to participate in (what else?) one last heist — a particularly complex one, targeting a literal gold mine in Kalgoorlie’s Super Pit. Friction between Lynch and Lennox is swiftly apparent; J.R. doesn’t help matters by striking romantic sparks with Tasha ( Alicia Vikander ), a wily member of Lennox’s jealously guarded coterie of women.
Once the high-octane mine job is completed, the situation goes awry in ways that might be termed predictably unpredictable. The usual litany of switchbacks and double-crosses ensues, keeping the film diverting enough — though in terms of structural intricacy, it hardly lives up to the script’s early symbolic invocation of chess’s famed Benoni Defense. (As is so often the case in films featuring any chess-related subtext, it exists primarily to give one character the satisfaction of uttering “checkmate” as a hard-boiled punchline.) A heavily plotted final act aims for the best of all possible worlds, balancing near-fantastical genre mechanics, noirish romantic resolution and episodes of unvarnished violence that appear slotted in from a more severe school of non-Hollywood crime drama.
Thwaites, recently seen in “Maleficent” and “The Giver,” makes a suitably keen-eyed, clean-scrubbed lead, retaining a kind of porous naivete even as the character gets his blood up. Vikander is a curious fit for a familiar femme fatale (or semi-fatale, at least) role that doesn’t play to her subtly inquisitive strengths as a performer; still, she does enough to make one wish this testosterone-dominated film were more than passingly interested in her, or women in general. With Lynch neither a pure antagonist nor the keeper of the film’s perspective, McGregor’s casting is more purposefully counter-intuitive. Exhibiting some of his own tattoos and putting a guttural Irish spin on his Scots brogue, the star effectively deploys his everyman charisma on a character who occupies far scuzzier moral ground than he’s used to playing.
Technically, the film adeptly rolls with the script’s highly varied punches, with Nigel Bluck’s lensing alternating between intimate, verite-style desaturation and the kind of florid orange-and-teal action panoramas chiefly associated with high-concept Hollywood. More tonally committed is the anxious, low-humming score by Jed Kurzel (“The Snowtown Murders”), which merges with the ambient-buzzsaw sound design in a comparable manner to the integrated sonic textures of fellow Australian David Michod’s first two features. That’s unlikely to be the last time Avery and Michod are mentioned in the same short breath.
