$100 million super yacht 'Archimedes' docked at Port of Pensacola

PENSACOLA, Fla. -- A super yacht reported to be worth $100,000,000 is currently docked at the Port of Pensacola.

"Archimedes" is owned by U.S. billionaire James Simons.

It was manufactured at The Feadship Royal Van Lent Shipyard in Netherlands in 2008, according to CharterWorld.com.

It is unclear how long the yacht will be docked in Downtown Pensacola.

World class America's Cup team is training in Pensacola

Have you seen a strange looking sailboat — that appears to hover above the water — zipping around the bay?

The New York Yacht Club's American Magic racing team, seeking to challenge Emirates Team New Zealand in the 36th America's Cup in 2021, could have chosen anywhere to test out and train on their new concept sailboat, but they chose Pensacola.

"Twelve months ago, we did a weather study in a couple different venues in the southeast. Key West was the first spot because of the temperatures, and Pensacola was the next spot because of the reliability of the wind conditions," said Terry Hutchinson, American Magic skipper and executive director. "The more time we spent here, we realized how incredibly flat water the venue is. Because of what we are doing and what we are developing, it's a very logical choice to come and sail and test and do what we need to here."

America's Cup teams mount a campaign, most spending well over $100 million, to challenge the yacht club that won the previous America's Cup and that is defending the oldest international sporting trophy. The America's Cup matches are held every four years. Emirates Team New Zealand won in 2017 and will be defending the Cup in Auckland in 2021.

A new class of high-performance, 75-foot foiling monohull boats called the AC75 are being designed. While each campaign must follow certain rules and parameters when designing their boats, a lot of the competition comes down to design, making what American Magic is doing here in Pensacola extremely secretive. They have set up their "base" at the Port of Pensacola. They have a concept boat here that is a 50 percent scale of the actual AC75 that is used to test the design concepts, and they have to keep the boat out of sight of any competitors that find out where they are located and seek to get intel on their design. The test boat has affectionately been named the MULE and local Pensacola sailors have been itching to get their eyes on it zipping around the bay.

"The America's Cup is very much a design competition. The fastest boat will win the regatta. So, a lot of our focus right now is to design a fast boat. Within that, we have to have sailors that can understand the technology that we are talking about, understand the idiosyncrasies of the boat and know how to develop it," Hutchinson said of the design and sailing team that is here in Pensacola.

The American Magic team is comprised of individuals, both designers and sailors, with America's Cup experience. This will be Hutchinson's fifth campaign for the Cup. Other team principals include Hap Fauth, Doug DeVos and Roger Penske, who is also involved in professional auto racing. At the helm steering the boat will be Dean Barker, who also has Cup experience and works closely with tactician Andrew Campbell and trimmer Paul Goodison to understand and tweak the boat.

Of the 110-person American Magic organization, about 45 people are here in Pensacola until May. In addition to the lodging and living expenses the organization is spending, they have also contracted with the port and have worked with local machine shops, hydraulic shops and crane operators.

The impact to Pensacola hopefully will not just be the immediate dollars being spent, but a longer-term economic impact and boost to Pensacola's reputation.

"This is going to showcase the venue that we have for sailing," said Talbot Wilson, past board member and current volunteer at Pensacola Yacht Club and one of many people who worked to facilitate American Magic coming to Pensacola. "Pensacola Bay is one of the best sailing venues in the world. We are thinking about the economic development of Pensacola and the fun of putting people's focus back on the water — we don't want to lose that heritage."

Tom Pace and Hal Smith, both of Pensacola Yacht Club, also worked to facilitate American Magic coming to Pensacola, as did local sailors such as Dr. Jim Andrews, the city and the Port of Pensacola.

Hutchinson praised Clark Merritt, economic development manager for the port, and Amy Miller, port director, for working with the team, adding, "We are here for a reason and that is to prepare ourselves for the 36th match, and at the same time what an unbelievable opportunity the city has given us by allowing us to be here."

Miller said city officials were happy to highlight the port and Pensacola Bay in a different way.

"This is not a traditional port activity, so we are happy to do something non-traditional that is a little more high profile that really highlights, not just our terrific port, but also Pensacola Bay and what a great sailing venue that Pensacola Bay is," Miller said. "We hope we can leverage the worldwide exposure we are going to get from American Magic being here, and work with them and the local sailing community and local officials to attract some major sailing events to Pensacola Bay."

In addition to finding the city of Pensacola friendly and welcoming, the team is finding Pensacola's weather and water to be perfect for their needs. Hutchinson said out of a 14-day training block, a team would be lucky to get 50 percent of that time on the water. Here, they can get 70 percent of the time on the water. The flat water and the steady breeze in the open bay makes Pensacola ideal.

"I think we are going to look back on our time here in two years' time and, touch wood, if we have the opportunity to win the event and bring the Cup home, Pensacola is going to be a key part of that whole process," Hutchinson said. "Which is very exciting. The other exciting part is I'm personally blown away by how nice the whole area is. If we don't open the door to bring regattas here and bring sailing traffic to this part of the world, then people are really missing out. If things go our way, Pensacola is going to be an integral part of our success."

WHAT IS A FOILING MONOHULL?

The hull is the actual body of the boat. A monohull sailboat has one hull, and a multihull sailboat has two or more hulls.

A foiling sailboat, or hydrofoil sailboat, has wing-like attachments mounted to the hull of the boat. These foils allow the boat to lift up out of the water, giving the sailboat the appearance of flying and resulting in increased speeds.

Foiling catamarans (two hulls) have been used in previous America's Cups, but this is the first time a foiling monohull is to be used, leading to a high-stakes, high-dollar design contest.

WHAT IS THE AMERICA'S CUP?

The America's Cup is the oldest trophy in international sports, older than the modern Olympics. The Cup was first awarded in 1851 when a boat called America won a sailing race around the Isle of Wright in the United Kingdom. The trophy was then named the America's Cup and went to the New York Yacht Club. It was determined the Cup would be available for perpetual competition and would be awarded to any club that successfully challenged the current club that has the Cup.

The New York Yacht Club successfully defended the Cup 24 times, until it was defeated in 1983 by an Australian team, in what is considered to be the longest winning streak in sports history.

In the 1970s, more than one yacht club sought to challenge for the Cup and a Challenger Selection Series was created. The single challenger that won that series would then go on to challenge the defender in a one-on-one match race, known as the America's Cup.

The upcoming 36th America's Cup will include the Challenger Selection Series, ending with the Prada Cup in early 2021. The winner of the Prada Cup will go on to race Emirates Team New Zealand for the America's Cup, sponsored by Prada.

The award-winning ship has a Jacuzzi, hammam, and sauna with an outside window to watch the views outside the yacht, and a massage or a beauty room.

The Jacuzzi area is surrounded by sun pads and is elevated so guests can enjoy the sea views.

There is also a juice bar onboard. The yacht has wonderful living and dining spaces with glass windbreakers for uninterrupted views of the ocean views.

The ship features a unique foldable sea terrace that folds down from the starboard side. The beach club offers an indoor/outdoor area for guests to enjoy. The guests can jump right into the ocean from the swimming platform.

There is also an external stairwell that connects the sea terrace to the main deck and the swimming pool. The swimming pool is surrounded by coffee tables and seating for guests to enjoy.

The swimming pool also features a counter-current jet so guests can swim laps in the 6.7m pool. The garage is filled with water toys and tenders for guests to enjoy the water below.

The exterior of the SYNTHESIS yacht features a design from Tim Heywood Design . She is an Amels 242 model and was delivered from the Amels shipyard in 2021.

She features underwater lights and a string exterior with a white steel hull and aluminum superstructure and teak decks. She underwent a refit in 2021 as well.

Specifications

The SYNTHESIS yacht has a length of 74m, and a beam of 12.46m with a draft of 3.85m. She has a cruising speed of 14 knots, and a maximum speed of 17 knots thanks to her twin Caterpillar engine.

She has a displacement of 1790 gross tons and a range of 5000 nautical miles. She was built to a Lloyd’s Register classification society rules.

The $100 million yacht has an annual running cost of $5 – $10 million.

Even though GOOD TIMES was first completed and launched in 2005, she has received numerous updates and upgrades over the years. No area of the boat was focused on more than the interior salon, galley, and guest accommodations. The owner of GOOD TIMES employed Architectural Interiors to do an extensive interior re-fit in 2017. The undertaking included all new furnishings throughout the yacht, new marble/granite countertops in the galley, new galley appliances, new wood flooring throughout the main deck, marble floors in the bathrooms, new soft goods, and so much more.

The flybridge upper helm command center has an enclosure, large couch, and a wetbar with bar stools.

Moving to the main deck, the bow has a circular lounge and sunpad forward. This provides an excellent place to enjoy the scenery while the captain cruises. The aft cockpit offers a wonderfully shaded area with lots of space and a dining area for eight guests. There is another bar with several bar stools in the cockpit as well as an outdoor television.

The flybridge on the Westport 112 offers so much space and opportunity for guests to enjoy the outdoors.

Whether a passing rain shower or escape from the sun, the shaded aft cockpit is a perfect spot for lunch or cocktails.

GOOD TIMES, now GRATITUDE, is powered with MTU 16V 2000 engines that can cruise comfortably in the lower 20 knot range.
