How Much Do Superyachts Cost?

rebel yacht owner

When it comes to superyachts, the sky is the limit when it comes to cost.

These luxury vessels come with hefty price tags that can range from anywhere between $30 million to over $400 million.

So, if youre in the market for a superyacht, youre looking at an investment that could easily break the bank.

The cost of a superyacht is driven by a variety of factors, including size, amenities, and customization.

Generally, the larger the yacht, the more expensive it will be.

Superyachts typically range in size from 100 feet to over 200 feet, and they can be as wide as 40 feet.

The bigger the yacht, the more luxurious features and amenities it will have.

Amenities also play a significant role in the cost of a superyacht.

While some owners prefer to keep their yachts out of the public eye, others have made headlines with their extensive amenities.

From swimming pools and helicopter pads to on-board cinemas and spas, the sky is the limit when it comes to customizing a superyacht.

The more amenities a superyacht has, the more expensive it will be.

Finally, customization is another major factor that will drive up the cost of a superyacht.

Many luxury vessels have custom-designed interiors that are tailored to the owners tastes.

From custom furniture and artwork to lighting and audio systems, the cost of a superyacht can quickly escalate depending on the level of customization.

In short, the cost of a superyacht can vary widely depending on its size, amenities, and customization.

While some may be able to get away with spending a few million dollars, others may end up spending hundreds of millions of dollars on their dream yacht.

No matter what your budget is, its important to do your research and find out exactly what youre getting for your money before signing on the dotted line.

Keeping Superyachts Out of the Public Eye

When it comes to owning a superyacht, some owners prefer to keep their vessels out of the public eye.

Understandably, these individuals are concerned with privacy and discretion, and therefore tend to take measures to ensure their yachts are not visible to outsiders.

For instance, some superyacht owners opt to keep their vessels in private marinas, away from the public areas of larger ports.

Additionally, some yacht owners may choose to hire security guards to patrol and protect their vessels while they are moored or sailing.

In addition to physical security, some superyacht owners also use technology to keep their vessels out of the public eye.

For example, a yacht owner may choose to install a satellite-based communications system that allows them to keep their vessel completely off-radar.

This system works by bouncing signals off satellites rather than transmitting them, making it virtually impossible for anyone to track the yachts movements.

Finally, some superyacht owners also choose to limit the number of people who have access to their vessels.

For instance, the owner may only allow family members and close friends to board the yacht.

Additionally, the owner may choose to employ a limited number of staff to help maintain the vessel and keep it running smoothly.

These individuals may be required to sign non-disclosure agreements to ensure they do not disclose any information about the yacht or its owner.

Overall, while some superyacht owners may choose to keep their vessels out of the public eye, there are still plenty of other ways to show off the opulence associated with owning a superyacht.

From swimming pools and helicopter pads to on-board cinemas and spas, there are many luxurious amenities that can make a superyacht the envy of any jet setter.

Final Thoughts

Superyachts are a symbol of luxury and status, and the list of yacht owners reads like a who’s who of billionaires.

From the Emir of Qatar’s world-record breaking $400 million yacht to Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen’s vessel with a helicopter pad and on-board spa, the amenities of these luxury vessels are truly stunning.

With prices ranging from $30 million to over $400 million, owning a superyacht is an expensive endeavor.

Telegram Billionaire’s Rebel Streak Puts Freedom at Risk

rebel yacht owner

(Bloomberg) -- Pavel Durov’s laissez-faire attitude to regulation made messaging app Telegram into a giant and gave him a platform to clash with officials from Moscow to Brussels from his perch in Dubai.

His decision to repeatedly ignore requests from governments to better moderate content on his platform reached a tipping point this weekend, when he was detained in France over allegations that Telegram failed to adequately combat crime on the app, including the spread of child sexual abuse material.

Telegram has been reluctant to remove all but the most violent content under Durov, who has a net worth of $9.2 billion, according to the Bloomberg Billionaires Index. The 39-year-old has styled himself as a radical libertarian and cultivates a look riffing off of Keanu Reeves’ Neo character in The Matrix, usually sporting an all-black wardrobe. With passports from the United Arab Emirates and France, he often documents his globetrotting life, recently posting pictures of his travels throughout Central Asia.

Despite the carefree image, Durov faces heightened pressure to monetize Telegram, which is free to use. Ahead of a $2.4 billion bond maturing in March 2026, the platform has been trying to make money off of its 900 million users.

Durov’s arrest is all but certain to complicate efforts to take the company public, a route he has indicated he favors over selling it at valuations he claims are in excess of $30 billion.

It also sets up a battle over free speech, with X owner Elon Musk and former US National Security Agency contractor Edward Snowden among those who have condemned the arrest.

Durov is being interrogated as part of a case initiated by a cybercrime unit of the Paris prosecutor’s office. Investigative judges handling the case are looking into a wide range of allegations, which include refusing to help authorities run legal wiretaps on suspects, enabling the sale of child sexual abuse material and aiding and abetting drug trafficking.

“It is absurd to claim that a platform or its owner are responsible for abuse of that platform,” Telegram said in a statement on Sunday. “We’re awaiting a prompt resolution of this situation.”

Durov couldn’t be reached for comment.

The UAE asked French officials for access to Durov, and is “closely following the case,” the country’s foreign ministry said in a statement on Tuesday. Earlier, the Russian embassy in France had demanded access to Durov, who was born in St. Petersburg and lived in Russia until 2013.

Lightning Rod

Telegram has long been a lightning rod for controversy. European Union officials argue it fuels disinformation, including conspiracy theories that sparked recent anti-immigrant rioting in the UK and allegations that Russian intelligence services used the site to recruit agents. The EU has looked at how the platform reports its number of users to see if it can apply its Digital Services Act to force Durov to better moderate content.

Durov has repeatedly ignored requests from democratic and authoritarian governments alike to better moderate content on his platform. European Union officials argue Telegram fuels disinformation and promotes pro-Kremlin propaganda. Russia, for its part, tried and failed to block the app after it refused to turn over user messages.

Telegram releases very little financial information, making pinning down its value more difficult than many other social media and messaging platforms. Durov is the sole owner of the company, according to Securities and Exchange Commission filings.

Telegram is unique among major social media networks in that it doesn’t use algorithms to promote content to its users. Instead, users subscribe to channels and see posts and videos in chronological order. While that lets the platform argue it only serves users what they choose to see, bad actors have exploited the platform’s structure by posting inflammatory content in mainstream channels and then bringing new followers into more radicalized chat communities.

The site played a central role in coordinating violent demonstrations in August in the UK where anti-migrant demonstrators clashed with police and threatened immigrant communities, said Moustafa Ayad, an executive director at the Institute of Strategic Dialogue, a think tank that tracks extremism. Others have used Telegram to disseminate bomb-making instructions and guides on how to shoot at US power stations as part of plans to cause havoc.

Before Telegram, Durov founded Facebook-lookalike VKontakte in 2006, which grew to Russia’s biggest social network thanks in part to easy sharing of pirated movies and music. In 2012, he and a colleague threw 5,000 ruble notes — worth over $150 each at the time — from their office window in central St. Petersburg.

Durov also took a stand against Russia’s KGB successor, the Federal Security Service, when it sought to get VKontakte to shut down protest groups that formed in 2011.

Durov ultimately was forced to sell his stake in VKontakte. He claims he left Russia after refusing to turn over data on Ukrainian users during the country’s 2013 Maidan protests, which led to the overthrow of its pro-Kremlin leader Viktor Yanukovych.

Exploring the Rebel 50 G Yacht From Sacs Tecnorib

Rebel rebel..

  • Writer Craig Ritchie

rebel yacht owner

Italian sport yacht builders have enjoyed a long and glorious history of turning out fresh, emotive, and exhilarating designs that blend comfort and performance. It’s a heritage that lives on in some of today’s most exciting launches, including the brilliant Rebel 50 G from Sacs Tecnorib .

Sporting a stunning design by Christian Grande, the Rebel 50 G builds on the company’s heritage of building high-performance, rigid-hull inflatable boats, applying lessons learned over decades on the high seas to the fresh hard-hull designs that represent its new Rebel series. Unveiled at the 2023 Monaco Yacht Show, the Rebel 50 G quickly established itself as the belle of the ball. That Monaco crowd isn’t easy to impress, so it’s worth taking a closer look.

rebel yacht owner

Step aboard at the stern, and the Rebel’s focus on fun without limitations quickly becomes obvious. The swim platform is enormous, illustrating this yacht’s playful intentions. The Rebel is clearly a boat with a youthful spirit, made for active owners who plan to spend their time on the water doing more than just taking in the sun.

That said, a bit of time soaking up some natural vitamin D is never a bad thing, especially after a refreshing dip or checking out the local sea life with a mask and snorkel. A stern-facing sun lounge provides the perfect spot to indulge while enjoying panoramic views. It also neatly conceals the yacht’s tender garage.

The forward face of the sun pad is configured as an enticing settee, protected by an overhead hard top and a powered extendable sunscreen to neatly blend the outdoor space with the salon immediately ahead. The entire aft end of the salon is wide open, which, combined with the louvred overhead sunroof and opening side glazings, lets the fresh sea air circulate throughout, yet when cruising in cooler weather, closing the roof and side windows keeps everyone well protected from the chilly air.

rebel yacht owner

The huge side windows and louvred overhead create a bright and attractive salon space, where an L-shaped settee surrounds a beautiful wood table. To port, an attractive galley station and wet bar serve the area well with a sink, fridge, and ice maker.

Below decks, the Rebel 50 G comes equipped with a twin guest cabin, a spacious head, an appealing lower salon for late-night lounging, and a delightful owner’s suite forward. Large side glazings flood the spaces with natural light while affording appropriate privacy, while generous headroom keeps the lower deck from ever feeling tight.

The height of the lower deck is neatly hidden to the outside world, with the yacht’s bow concealing the high ceiling with a delightful forward sun lounge—wide enough for three, like the stern pad—preceded by a pair of forward-facing loungers in the far-forward bow. Accessed by wide side promenades, the bow is an attractive, intimate space for enjoying the sea views or admiring the sunsets.

rebel yacht owner

On the other side of the sharply raked windscreen lies the helm, with its multiple touch screen displays, twin sport bucket seats, and sport steering wheel. It looks like something straight out of a private jet : neat, polished, and straight to the point, with every possible bit of engine, operational or navigational data instantly available at the flick of a fingertip.

As for performance, Sacs Tecnorib might as well be an Italian euphemism for “get there quickly,” and that’s evident in the Rebel 50 G. Twin Volvo Penta IPS 950 pod-drive eco diesels churn out a staggering 1,400 horsepower combined, giving the big Rebel a cruising speed of 28 knots and a top speed of 36. Combined with the yacht’s performance hull, the result is jaw-dropping acceleration and the kind of nimble handling one expects from a Sea-Doo, rather than a luxury yacht.

With its unique blend of elegance and performance, Sacs Tecnorib’s Rebel 50 G will evoke the rebellious spirit in all of us.

Rebel 50G, the superyacht-like luxury Maxi Rib

  • Alex Giuzio
  • October 12, 2023

Making its debut at the Monaco Yacht Show 2023, Rebel 50G is the latest addition to the Sacs Tecnorib range and is destined to conquer the hearts of luxury Maxi Rib enthusiasts. The Principality’s showcase was the best chance to present this new jewel, since it is the reference event not only for superyachts , but also for large inflatables that are suitable for comfortable few-day cruises or for use as megayacht tenders. Precisely for this reason Sacs Tecnorib chose the wonderful setting of Port Hercule to exhibit, from 27 to 30 September, the flagship model of the Rebel range, designed by Christian Grande to overturn the rules of boating, combining the sportiness of Maxi Ribs with the elegance of yachts and giving birth to models with unprecedented, muscular yet sophisticated lines. Together with the Rebel 50G, the Rebel 47 and the new Strider 11 were also put on display.

Rebel 50G, the Maxi Rib for unforgettable adventures

Rebel 50G is the new model in the Rebel range, which Sacs Tecnorib has designed to trace a new footprint in the pursuit of life on board as the perfect meeting point with a sense of adventure. Just looking at this splendid Maxi Rib opens the imagination to the possibility of reaching unexplored bays in no time at all; doing the rest is the highly sophisticated design, reminiscent of mega-yachts in its details and materials.

Rebel-50G_exterior

Rebel 50G features the typical stylistic features of the Sacs Tecnorib brand, but it is also an unconventional design, standing between the classic rib market and the open boat market, with a transition emphasized by the tapered foam profiles and enhanced by the side glazing. A key feature of this inflatable lies in fact in the two side windows flush with the hard-top , which define a hybrid deck space between cockpit and saloon. Moreover, a rear glass door is available as an option, in order to completely separate the interior and exterior and thus reconcile the usability of an open with the main advantages of a cruiser: comfort when underway and protection from adverse environmental conditions.

The exterior spaces of the Rebel 50G feature four different layouts, all characterized by a walkaround configuration and large spaces for improved conviviality. Below decks, on the other hand, two options are available, with one or two cabins, guaranteeing ample stowage space, excellent volumes and great privacy. Power comes from two Volvo Penta IPS 950 engines of 725 hp each which allow the Rebel 50G to reach a maximum speed and a cruising speed of 36 and 28 knots respectively.

Rebel 47 and Strider 11, the other two Ribs on display in Monaco

rebel-47

As mentioned above, alongside the Rebel 50G, Sacs Tecnorib also exhibited the Rebel 47 and Strider 11 at the Monaco Yacht Show 2023. The former, redesigned by Christian Grande at the beginning of 2023 and presented at the last Düsseldorf Show, is a luxury day-cruiser with a modern design and smaller foam tubulars that make the exteriors more sinuous and elegant. The main deck offers a large dining area with a cocktail cabinet, sink, drawers, refrigerator, and dining table with teak flap, as well as a relaxation area with sofas and sundeck, while below deck there are two double cabins with a super queen-size bed, sofa, and bookshelves. Innovations include a carbon hard-top, a wider and more rounded front window that increases visibility from the helm station, a reduced beam to fit within the 4-metre width that is an advantage when docking in port and, finally, a new range of metallic paint finishes.

Strider 11

The Strider 11 , on the other hand, is the new model in the iconic Strider series, available in two versions, Sun Deck and Open Back.

The owner can choose the engine option that best suits his or her needs, the maximum speed is 47 knots and the capacity is 14 passengers. The Sun Deck version provides a full-beam sundeck in the aft area, while the Open Back version has a sofa for six. The telescopic central element can be lowered and the entire area can become a sundeck in turn. There are two berths (plus a further two optional ones in the Sun Deck version) and the interior, light and enveloping, is characterized by an elegant oak essence.

Rebel 50 G Yacht: A Fusion of Comfort and Style on Sea

rebel yacht owner

Per its namesake, the Rebel 50 G , represents its creator’s desire to rebel and create something new. Designer Christian Grande has offered us a special look at his upcoming 50-foot yacht from Sacs Technorib.

First, this creative journey takes us through a sweeping sundeck. The Rebel 50 G is alive with a “romantic soul” and an emphasis on leisure. Sweeping sliding glass doors on either side offer continuity between the ship and the sea. The open space provides the advantages of a cruising boat and comfort in bad weather.

Creator Christian Grande said, “This model, as the name implies, rebels against the classic ideas that want inflatable boats and open boats as entities with distinct souls,” explains Christian Grande. “The identity of the rib remains, but on board, we have recreated the large spaces typical of boats. To do this, I worked on the volumes, ‘playing’ with key elements such as the generous tube, which allowed us to raise the topsides, stretching the overall mass, thus generating unusual habitability on a 50-footer, while maintaining the safety features in maneuvering and mooring that the tube ensures.”

There are two rooming configurations available. The first, called Living, features a single large cabin midship. The bow extends into a living room with a table, long sofas, and a bar.

The other configuration has two cabins; a master cabin in the bow with a double bed, and a VIP cabin in the middle of the ship. Two beds slide out electronically and can combine into one queen-sized bed.

Questions for Investigators Trying to Unravel Mystery of Luxury Yacht’s Sinking

The investigators searching for answers about the shipwreck, leaving seven dead, face questions about extreme weather and possible human error or problems with the yacht itself.

More than 180 feet long, with a mast towering about 240 feet and a keel that could be lowered for greater stability, the Bayesian luxury yacht did not, in the eyes of its maker, have the vulnerabilities of a ship that would easily sink.

“It drives me insane,” Giovanni Costantino, the chief executive of the Italian Sea Group, which in 2022 bought the company that made the ship, said after its wreck last week. “Following all the proper procedures, that boat is unsinkable.”

But the $40 million sailing yacht sank within minutes and with fatal results: seven dead, including the British technology billionaire Michael Lynch, his teenage daughter, four of Mr. Lynch’s friends and a member of the crew. Fifteen people, including the captain, escaped on a lifeboat.

Mr. Lynch had invited family, friends and part of his legal team on a cruise in the Mediterranean to celebrate his acquittal in June of fraud charges tied to the sale of his company to the tech giant Hewlett-Packard.

The Italian authorities have opened a manslaughter investigation, searching for answers from the survivors, the manufacturer and the wreck itself. They face a range of questions and possible factors.

An ‘earthquake’ in the sky?

When the Bayesian sank around 4 a.m. on Aug. 19, the waters in its area, about half a mile off the Sicilian port of Porticello, were transformed by an extremely sudden and violent storm, according to fishermen, a captain in the area and meteorologists.

But what kind of storm is still a mystery, compounded by the fact that a sailing schooner anchored nearby did not have its own disaster. Also unclear is whether the crew was aware that the Italian authorities had issued general warnings about bad weather the night before.

Karsten Börner, the captain of the nearby passenger ship, said he’d had to steady his ship during “really violent” winds . During the storm, he said, the Bayesian seemed to disappear behind his ship.

Severe lightning and strong gusts were registered by the Italian Air Force’s Center for Aerospace Meteorology and Climatology, according to Attilio Di Diodato, its director. “It was very intense and brief in duration,” he said.

The yacht, he said, had most likely been hit by a fierce downburst — a blast of powerful wind surging down during a thunderstorm. His agency put out rough-sea warnings the previous evening, alerting sailors about possible storms.

Locals have said the winds “felt like an earthquake.” A fisherman in Porticello said that he had seen a flare go off in the early-morning hours. His brother ventured to the site once the weather had calmed about 20 minutes later, he said, finding only floating cushions.

The Italian authorities have so far declined to say whether investigators had seen any structural damage to the hull or other parts of the ship.

Open hatches or doors?

The boat executive, Mr. Costantino, has argued that the Bayesian was an extremely safe vessel that could list even to 75 degrees without capsizing. His company, the Italian Sea Group, in 2022 bought the yacht’s manufacturer, Perini Navi, which launched the ship in 2008.

Mr. Costantino said that if some of the hatches on the side and in the stern, or some of the deck doors, had been open, the boat could have taken on water and sunk. Standard procedure in such storms, he said, would be to switch on the engine, lift the anchor and turn the boat into the wind, lowering the keel for extra stability, closing doors and gathering the guests in the main hall inside the deck.

At a news conference on Saturday, almost a week after the sinking, investigators said the yacht had sunk at an angle , with its stern — where the heavy engine was — having gone down first. The wreck was found lying on its right side at the bottom of a bay, about 165 feet deep.

12 guests occupied the yacht’s six cabins. There were also 10 crew members.

Open hatches, doors and cabin windows could have let in water during a storm, according to the manufacturer.

Water pouring into open hatches or doors could have contributed to the sinking, experts say, but that on its own may not account for the speed at which such a large boat vanished underwater.

Asked about the hatches at the news conference, the authorities declined to comment on whether they had been found open at the wreck.

The authorities have also not specified whether the boat had been anchored, whether it was under power at the time or whether its sails had been unfurled.

A retracted keel?

The Bayesian had a keel — the fin-like structure beneath a boat that can help stabilize it — that could be retracted or extended, according to its manufacturer. On some yachts, keels can be raised to let the large vessel dock in shallower water, and extended downward to help keep a boat level.

But like the hatches, the status of the keel alone may not explain why a large ship sank with such precipitous speed. Investigators have not disclosed what divers may have seen at the wreck, aside from saying divers had faced obstacles like furnishings and electrical wiring in tight quarters. Officials want to raise the wreck to better examine it, a process that may take weeks.

Human error?

Ambrogio Cartosio, the prosecutor in charge of the case, said at the news conference that it was “plausible” crimes had been committed, but that investigators had not zeroed in on any potential suspects.

“There could be responsibilities of the captain only,” he said. “There could be responsibilities of the whole crew. There could be responsibilities of the boat makers. Or there could be responsibilities of those who were in charge of surveilling the boat.”

It remains unclear what kind of emergency training or preparation took place before the disaster, or what kind of coordination there was during it. So far, none of the surviving crew members have made a public statement about what happened the night the ship sank.

Prosecutors said they want to ask more questions of the captain and crew, who have been in a Sicilian hotel with other survivors. They said that neither alcohol nor drug tests had been performed on crew members, and that they have been allowed to leave Italy.

Prosecutors also said they were also investigating why the captain, an experienced sailor, left the sinking boat while some passengers were still on board.

Besides possible manslaughter charges, the authorities are investigating the possibility of a negligently caused shipwreck.

The bodies of five passengers were found in one cabin, on the left side of the yacht, the authorities said. The five were most likely trying to flee to the higher side of the boat and were probably sleeping when the boat started to sink, they said.

There are 3 major theories as to why Mike Lynch’s Bayesian yacht sank so fast

Italian rescue services retrieving bodies from the wreck of the Bayesian.

On Thursday, Italian authorities retrieved a fifth body from the Bayesian superyacht that sank in a storm earlier this week, killing British technology entrepreneur Mike Lynch.

The 184-foot British-flagged vessel sank early Monday , and the five identified bodies thus far from the incident include Mike Lynch , founder of Autonomy and investor in Darktrace; Morgan Stanley Bank International chairman Jonathan Bloomer and his wife, Judy; Chris Morvillo, a Clifford Chance lawyer, and his wife, Neda, were also found. Lynch’s 18-year-old daughter Hannah is still missing.

There are several theories as to why the massive $39 million boat sank in just about 60 seconds. And the maker of the ship says the crew should have had time to rescue passengers.

Theory one: The mast was pushed over by the wind

The first theory is that the mast on the massive vessel was so tall it tipped the boat over when a waterspout— essentially a water tornado —hit the boat. Giovanni Costantino , CEO of the Italian Sea Group , which owns several boat brands including the yacht’s builder, Perini Navi , told the Financial Times the boat was “designed to be absolutely stable” because it had the “world’s second-tallest mast.” But Karsten Borner, the skipper of a nearby boat, suggests the sinking actually could have been caused by high winds hitting the 236-foot mast. Even with sails stowed, the mast and its rigging would have provided a vast surface area for wind resistance.

The Bayesian “went flat [with the mast] on the water, and then went down,” Borner told Reuters . For reference, the tallest mast on a sailing boat on record was the Mirabella V at nearly 247 feet long, according to Guinness World Records .

Theory two: The retractable keel was in the wrong position

The second theory about the cause of the Bayesian sinking is that the keel was retracted when it should have been lowered, making the boat less stable. The keel is a structural beam that runs under the middle of the boat from bow to stern, giving the boat better stability, a lower center of gravity in the water, and more control while moving forward. “Without the keel, a boat might slip or skim on the water,” according to boat manufacturer Sea Born .

The Bayesian had a keel that could be retracted, according to the yacht’s manufacturer, Perini Navi. It could be lifted to reduce the draught of the boat, making it easier to enter shallow harbors. It’s possible that if the keel had been in the raised position rather than extended, that could have compromised the boat’s stability in a strong wind, causing it to sink.

Theory three: A major hatch was left open to the waves

Perhaps the strongest theory so far is the notion that someone onboard may have left a major hatch or door ajar, causing the boat to quickly fill with water. In fact, Costantino thinks this is the strongest theory after watching back footage of the sinking; the rear of the boat appears to have a hinged door that folds down into a sea-level deck.

Since it was obvious the Bayesian was taking on water, there should have been time to get everyone off the boat and into rafts, Costantino told the FT .

“Jesus Christ! The hull is intact. The water came in from [hatchways] left open,” he said. “There is no other possible explanation. If maneuvered properly, the boat would have comfortably handled the weather—comfortably,” he said.

Who was onboard tech mogul Mike Lynch's Bayesian yacht?

Topic: Disasters, Accidents and Emergency Incidents

Six people are missing, including a man dubbed the British Bill Gates, after a luxury yacht sank off the Sicilian coast.

British tech entrepreneur Mike Lynch — freshly acquitted from a decade-long trial — had invited his work colleagues aboard a trip through the Mediterranean coast when a freak storm saw the yacht sink within moments.

Fifteen people escaped from the sinking vessel. The search for the missing continues.

Here's what we know so far:

What happened?

The Italian coastguard said the yacht — the Bayesian — was anchored off the shore of port city Porticello, near the Sicilian capital Palermo, when it was hit by bad weather sometime after 4am on Monday, local time.

Eyewitnesses said it vanished quickly beneath the waves shortly before dawn.

Managers of the sailing vessel Bayesian, Camper & Nicholsons, confirmed to the ABC that the Bayesian encountered severe weather and subsequently sank.

"Our priority is assisting with the ongoing search and providing all necessary support to the rescued passengers and crew," they said.

"The wind was very strong. Bad weather was expected, but not of this magnitude," a coastguard official told Reuters.

Sicily's civil protection agency head, Salvo Cocina, said a waterspout — a tornado over the water — could have struck the yacht.

"They were in the wrong place at the wrong time," Mr Cocina added.

Storms and heavy rainfall had swept down Italy in recent days after weeks of scorching heat, lifting the temperature of the Mediterranean Sea to record levels and raising the risk of extreme weather conditions, experts told Reuters.

"The sea surface temperature around Sicily was around 30 degrees Celsius, which is almost 3 degrees more than normal. This creates an enormous source of energy that contributes to these storms," meteorologist Luca Mercalli said.

Captain Karsten Borner of the Sir Robert Baden Powell vessel told journalists he noticed the Bayesian nearby during the storm, but after it calmed he saw a red flare and realised the ship had simply disappeared.

Mr Borner said he and a crew member boarded their tender and found a lifeboat with 15 people, some of them injured, who they then took aboard and alerted the coast guard.

Search crews, including helicopters and divers, are continuing to search the wreckage, lying at a depth of 49 metres.

Specialist divers reached the ship on Monday but access was limited due to objects in the way, the fire brigade said.

The UK Marine Accident Investigation Branch is deploying a team of four inspectors to Italy to conduct a preliminary assessment.

The Foreign Commonwealth and Development office said it was "providing consular support to a number of British nationals and their families".

Sicilian prosecutors have also opened an investigation into the event.

Who is missing?

A collage of three men

Lawyer Chris Morvillo (left), entrepreneur Mike Lynch, and Morgan Stanley chairman Jonathan Bloomer are among the missing.

There were 12 passengers and 10 crew members aboard the yacht.

Mr Cocina said the crew and passengers hailed from a variety of countries, including Britain, the United States, Antigua, France, Germany, Ireland, Myanmar, the Netherlands, New Zealand and Spain.

Of the 22, one man is confirmed dead and another six people are still missing.

They are believed to be inside the hull, fire rescue spokesperson Luca Cari said.

Fabio Cefalù, a fisherman who said he responded to a flare from the vessel but found it sunk, said he stayed at the site for three hours without finding anyone.

"I think they are inside, all the missing people," he said.

Rescue teams recovered the body of the yacht's onboard chef on Monday, identified as Antiguan citizen Ricardo Thomas.

The still missing people include:

  • Mr Lynch's 18-year-old daughter, Hannah
  • Jonathan Bloomer, chairman of global financial services company Morgan Stanley International
  • Chris Morvillo , a lawyer at the British multinational law firm Clifford Chance. He worked on Mr Lynch's lawsuit against Hewlett-Packard
  • The identities of the remaining two missing are still unconfirmed

Who was rescued?

Fifteen people escaped from the sinking ship.

Eight have been hospitalised and others were taken to a nearby hotel.

Among those rescued were:

  • Mr Lynch's wife, Angela Bacares, who was the owner of the yacht
  • Charlotte Golunski and her one-year-old daughter, Sofia. Ms Golunski is a partner at Mr Lynch's firm, Invoke Capital. She says she momentarily lost hold of Sofia in the water but managed to hold her up above the waves until the lifeboat was inflated
  • Ms Golunski's husband James Emslie
  • New Zealand captain of the yacht James Catfield. He told Italian newspaper La Repubblica the crew didn't see the storm coming
  • A lone Dutch citizen was identified by the Dutch foreign ministry as being rescued, but was not identified

Who is Mike Lynch?

Mr Lynch, once hailed as Britain’s king of technology, was recently freed from a Silicon Valley lawsuit that tarnished his legacy.

The 59-year-old Cambridge-educated mathematician created Autonomy , a search engine that could pore through emails and other internal business documents to help companies find vital information more quickly.

He received the OBE for his innovation in 2006.

He then sold the software to Hewlett-Packard (HP) for $US11 billion ($16 billion) in 2011, with Mr Lynch personally netting $US800 million.

HP valued Autonomy at $US46 billion ($68 billion) in the months leading up to the deal.

But the deal quickly turned sour after he was accused of forging the software's financial records to make the sale.

As part of a decades-long legal battle against HP, Mr Lynch was extradited to the UK on criminal fraud charges.

He steadfastly denied any wrongdoing, asserting that he was being made a scapegoat for HP's own bungling.

He was eventually cleared of all charges in June this year.

Although he avoided a possible prison sentence, Lynch still faced a bill from a civil case in London that HP mostly won during 2022. Damages haven't been determined in that case, but HP is seeking $US4 billion.

Following the San Francisco trial, Mr Lynch said he would return to the UK and do what he loved most: "[being with] my family and innovating in my field."

The holiday appeared to be something of a celebration after Mr Lynch's acquittal, with guests including some of the people who had stood by Lynch throughout the ordeal.

Italy Boaters Missing

In a separate act of tragedy, Mr Lynch's co-defendant in the trial, Stephen Chamberlain, died on Monday, after a road accident left him critically injured.

Mr Chamberlain — Autonomy's former vice-president of finance alongside Mr Lynch — was hit by a car in Cambridgeshire on Saturday morning and had been placed on life support.

What is the Bayesian?

The luxury yacht is 56m long sailboat, with a 75m mast labelled as the tallest aluminium mast in the world.

It was previously named Salute when it flew under a Dutch flag.

The yacht, built in 2008 by the Italian firm Perini Navi, can accommodate up to 12 guests in six suites and a crew of 10, according to online specialist yacht sites. It was last refitted in 2020.

Online charter sites listed it for rent for up to 195,000 euros (about $AU 321,000) a week.

Two boats in the sea

The ship also won a string of awards for its design.

Ms Golunski said the yacht had travelled through the Aeolian Islands, Milazzo and Cefalù before sinking.

It is likely the yacht's name would resonate with Mr Lynch because his PhD thesis and the software that made his fortune was based on Bayesian theory.

Bank boss among missing in Sicily yacht disaster

rebel yacht owner

Morgan Stanley International bank chairman Jonathan Bloomer and Clifford Chance lawyer Chris Morvillo are among the six people missing after a luxury yacht sank in a storm off Sicily on Monday, Sicily's Civil Protection told the BBC.

UK tech tycoon Mike Lynch, 59, and his daughter Hannah, 18, were earlier also reported unaccounted for after the incident about 700m (2,300ft) from the Mediterranean island's shore.

The 56m Bayesian was carrying 22 people including Brits, Americans and Canadians. Fifteen people were rescued, including a one-year-old British girl. Sicily's Civil Protection also confirmed that the body of the ship's cook was recovered.

A search operation resumed early on Tuesday morning, according to Italian media.

The British-flagged yacht with 10 crew and 12 passengers sank near the port of Porticello, just east of Sicily's capital Palermo, on Monday.

The yacht capsized at about 5:00 local time after a heavy storm caused waterspouts, or rotating columns of air and mist.

Witnesses told Italian news agency Ansa that the Bayesian’s anchor was down when the storm struck, causing the mast to break and the ship to lose its balance and sink.

On Monday, specialist fire and rescue divers, trained to work in tight spaces, flew in from Rome and Sardinia, but a first search of the wreck some 50 metres below the sea surface failed.

"Access was limited only to the bridge, with difficulty due to the presence of furniture obstructing passage," the Italian fire department posted on social media.

Mike Lynch, one of the missing passengers, is known by some as "the British Bill Gates".

He co-founded software company Autonomy, before selling it to American computing giant Hewlett-Packard (HP) in 2011 for $11bn (£8.6bn).

But an intense legal battle following the high-profile acquisition loomed over Mr Lynch for over a decade. He was acquitted in the US in June on multiple fraud charges, for which he had been facing two decades in jail.

There are reports that Mr Lynch had invited members of his legal team onto the yacht to celebrate his acquittal.

The sinking of the yacht came on the same day that Mr Lynch's co-defendant in the fraud case, Stephen Chamberlain, was confirmed by his lawyer as having died after being hit by a car in Cambridgeshire on Saturday.

Lawyer Chris Morvillo has also been listed among the missing.

Mr Morvillo has worked on high profile corruption cases, including Mr Lynch's recent trial.

He also worked on the criminal investigation surrounding the 2001 terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center, as an assistant US attorney for the southern district of New York from 1999 to 2005.

Morgan Stanley International chairman Jonathan Bloomer is also one of the six people who remain missing.

The 70-year-old Briton is also chair of insurance company Hiscox.

How sinking of luxury yacht off Sicily unfolded

Sicily yacht sinking: who is missing and who survived, who is british tech tycoon mike lynch.

The Bayesian's registered owner is listed as Revtom Ltd. The superyacht can accommodate up to 12 guests in six suites.

The yacht's name is understood to be based on the Bayesian theory, which Mr Lynch's PhD thesis was based on.

Mr Lynch's wife Angela Bacares is named as the sole legal owner of Revtom, which is registered in the Isle of Man. Ms Bacares was one of the 15 people rescued.

A British mother and her one-year-old daughter also survived.

The mother, named locally as Charlotte Golunski, later described how she was holding her baby above the surface of the sea to save her from drowning.

She told Italian newspaper La Repubblica her family survived because they were on deck when the yacht sank.

She said they were woken by “thunder, lightning and waves that made our boat dance”, and it felt like "the end of the world" before they were thrown into the water.

“For two seconds I lost my daughter in the sea then quickly hugged her amid the fury of the waves,” the paper quoted her as saying.

Survivors said the trip was organised by Mr Lynch for his work colleagues.

In the initial aftermath, a nearby Dutch-flagged vessel rescued survivors from the waves, tending to them until emergency services arrived.

After the storm had passed, Captain Karsten Borner said his crew noticed the yacht that had been behind them had disappeared.

"We saw a red flare, so my first mate and I went to the position, and we found this life raft drifting," he told Reuters.

That life raft was carrying 15 survivors, three of whom were "heavily injured", he said.

Eight of those rescued are receiving treatment in hospital, the Italian coastguard said.

The UK Foreign Office said it is supporting a number of British nationals and their families following an incident in Sicily. Britain's Marine Accident Investigation Branch is also sending a team of inspectors to conduct a "preliminary assessment" into the sinking of the UK registered-boat.

The 'Bayesian' Yacht Owner Is Missing After a Tornado Sank the Luxury Vessel

T he 184-foot luxury yacht called The Bayesian sank off the coast of Palermo, Italy on Monday, Aug. 19, 2024. Per CNN , six passengers are still missing at the time of writing — the original manifest included 22 people on board.

It's being reported that 15 people were rescued, and one passenger died. One of the missing is Mike Lynch, a tech entrepreneur whose wife's firm, Revcom, technically owns the superyacht. Mike has a very interesting past, which involves one of the biggest fraud cases in Silicon Valley history.

Read on for details.

So, who is Mike Lynch, the 'Bayesian' yacht owner who is missing?

According to The Washington Post , Mike is not accounted for after The Bayesian sank near Sicily in what's being called a "freak storm." Reportedly, the yacht's mast broke due to high winds, and the huge vessel sank.

The unthinkable accident resulted in Mike's 18-year-old daughter Hannah also being missing.

His wife, Angela Bacares, was reportedly rescued.

Per the outlet, Mike has been referred to as "Britain’s version of Bill Gates ." His company, Autonomy, sold to Hewlett-Packard for $11 billion over a decade ago.

But as AP News reports, that mega-deal soured when Mike was accused of falsifying documents leading up to the sale of Autonomy. A multi-year court case ensued, with Mike eventually being cleared of charges in the United States. Still, per the outlet, he was not done dealing with a civil case in his native Britain at the time of the yacht accident.

Mike Lynch's co-defendant was killed the same week the 'Bayesian' sank.

In a turn of events worthy of a movie, Mike's co-defendant in the case against him died on Saturday, just a few days before The Bayesian plummeted to 160 feet below the surface of the sea.

Stephen Chamberlain, who was killed by a car while jogging in England, was the former vice-president of finance for Autonomy, per The Guardian . He was initially placed on life support but later died.

Given the incredibly coincidental nature of the two awful tragedies, of course, conspiracy theories are cropping up on social media.

Adding fuel to the fire is the fact that Christopher Morvillo, the lawyer who helped clear the men of charges in the U.S., is among those missing after The Bayesian sank, per the New York Post .

Two months before going missing, Christopher oddly posted to LinkedIn for the first time .

"Following the jury's swift exoneration of our client, Mike Lynch, and his colleague, Steven Chamberlain, last week in San Francisco, I finally have something to say that I would like others to hear," he wrote in part.

After thanking many people who helped win the case, he finished the post by writing, "A huge thank you to my patient and incredible wife, Neda Morvillo, and my two strong, brilliant, and beautiful daughters, Sabrina Morvillo and Sophia Morvillo. None of this would have been possible without your love and support. I am so glad to be home. And they all lived happily ever after…."

Manslaughter Probe Launched After Bayesian Yacht Sinking Kills British Entrepreneur, Morgan Stanley Chief

Italian authorities have launched a manslaughter investigation into the captain of the luxury Bayesian sailing yacht that sank off the coast of Sicily last week in a wreck that killed seven people, including Britsh tech entrepreneur Michael Lynch, his 18-year-old daughter, Hannah, and Morgan Stanley International director Jonathan Bloomer.

Italian Coast Guards take part in searches of missing off Porticello near Palermo, on Aug. 21, 2024.

Italian prosecutors will investigate James Cutfield, the captain of the Bayesian, for manslaughter after the ship sank in rough weather overnight on Aug. 18, multiple outlets reported Monday.

The investigation will look into if the crew of the ship appropriately handled the storm that hit the yacht before it capsized, if passengers were warned of imminent danger and if hatches on the ship were left ajar, which would have contributed to its quick sinking.

As part of the probe, the ship will be raised from the waters in which it sank later this year, CNN reported , at the cost of registered owner Angela Bacares, the wife and mother, respectively, of victims Michael and Hannah Lynch.

The Bayesian, named for a mathematical theory, is currently about 50 meters (164 feet) below the surface near the port of Porticello in Sicily, Italy, and sank less than a minute after it capsized.

Officials have said the passengers who died—Michael and Hannah Lynch, Jonathan and Judy Bloomer and Chris and Neda Morvillo—were likely asleep at the time of the sinking.

Notices of investigations into an incident must be issued in Italy before autopsies can be done on victims, Reuters reported , and the opening of a probe does not necessarily mean formal charges will follow.

Key Background

The Bayesian is a 184-foot luxury sailing yacht with a 246-foot aluminum mast—the tallest of its kind in the world. It is legally owned by Bacares and her late husband "had a lot of pride" in his yacht, a staff member told The Times of London. The Lynch/Bacares family was on board with seven guests and the boat was anchored when a storm hit overnight on Sunday, Aug. 18. The harsh weather included a " waterspout ," a tornado-like swirling column of air and water, that caused the vessel to top over and it was then quickly dragged underwater. Of the 10 passengers, six died in the capsizing and their bodies were recovered last week. There were also 12 crew members on board and one, Recaldo Thomas, also died. Among those resued were Bacares; Charlotte Golunski, a partner at Lynch's Invoke Capital, along with her partner and her baby daughter; lawyer Ayla Ronald and her partner.

Lynch, Bloomer and Morvillo were all involved in a massive fraud trial that saw Hewlett-Packard accuse Lynch and others of artificially inflating the value of his software company, Autonomy, before HP purchased it in 2011. Lynch was indicted for conspiracy and wire fraud in the sale but was acquitted alongside his co-defendant Stephen Chamberlain, who was killed in a car crash in the U.K. the same weekend the Bayesian sank in Italy. Bloomer testified for the defense at Lynch’s trial, according to the Associated Press , and Morvillo was one of the lawyers on the case.

4 bodies found inside the Bayesian, Mike Lynch family yacht, amid search

Four bodies were recovered inside the Bayesian superyacht on Wednesday, more than two days after it sank off the coast of Italy , setting off an exhaustive search for six missing people, including British tech entrepreneur Mike Lynch .

Two of the bodies discovered earlier on Wednesday were brought to shore. One body recovered was a heavily built man, Reuters reported.

Six of the ship's 22 passengers, including Lynch and his 18-year-old daughter, went missing after the yacht plunged under the water just before 5 a.m. on Monday as a storm swept across the area. Americans are among the missing, officials have said.

The U.K.-registered yacht belonged to Lynch's wife, Angela Bacares, who was also on board and was rescued. The tech tycoon was recently acquitted on fraud charges after a year under house arrest.

Ricardo Thomas, the ship's cook, was found dead on Monday, according to the coast guard.

The rescue mission saw a diving team, helicopters and multiple coast guard ships deployed to search the water. Fifteen people were pulled from the water on Monday, and eight were hospitalized in stable condition.

A 'black swan event'? Experts puzzle over why Bayesian yacht sank

An investigation opened by local prosecutors into the cause of the disaster is ongoing. Experts have pointed to a water spout, a tornado over the water that can travel up to 120 mph, that formed during the storm, as well as the heavy weight of ship's mast, one of the largest in the world.

The 184-feet-long ship was made by Italian ship manufacturer Perini in 2008.

Lynch set off on the cruise late last month to celebrate his acquittal on fraud charges in the U.S. that marked a decade of legal challenges, the Associated Press reported .

One of his lawyers and a character witness for Lynch during the trial were also on board and vanished when the boat went down. Authorities have not yet disclosed the identities of the four people found.

Here are the passengers who were declared missing.

Mike Lynch and Hannah Lynch

Mike Lynch, 59, is co-founder of Britain’s largest enterprise software, Autonomy, which was sold to Hewlett-Packard in 2011, and founder of venture capital fund Invoke Capital.

Sometimes known as “Britain’s Bill Gates,” Lynch was slapped with charges after HP said it had uncovered deceit and a major accounting scandal within the firm. He spent a year on house arrest after being extradited from the UK.

In early June, at the end of a 12-week trial, a San Francisco jury acquitted Lynch of wire fraud and conspiracy to commit wire fraud. He was also cleared on a charge of securities fraud later that month.

Lynch and Bacares have two daughters and six dogs, all named after engineering parts, according to the U.K.’s Sunday Times in a profile of Lynch from last month.

Lynch’s 18-year-old daughter, Hannah, was also among the missing. She was preparing to study English literature at Oxford University, according to the Sunday Times.

Hannah is the younger of Mike Lynch’s two daughters, the Times reported . Mike Lynch told the outlet that his daughters had grown up with their father being publicly accused of fraud.

Jonathan Bloomer and Judy Bloomer

Jonathan Bloomer is the non-executive chairman of both Morgan Stanley International and the insurer Hiscox, among other companies. Bloomer acted as a character witness on Lynch’s behalf during his fraud trial.

Hiscox Chief Executive Aki Hussain told Reuters in a statement that the firm was deeply shocked and saddened and their thoughts were with all those affected.

Bloomer’s twin brother, Jeremy, told BBC that he is processing the news and the family is waiting to hear updates.

“He was my elder by half an hour, so, it means a lot when you lose a twin brother,” Jeremy Bloomer told BBC. “We’ll still wait and see, so it’s fingers crossed.”

Jonathan Bloomer’s wife, Judy, is a psychotherapist of nearly three decades and former teacher. She specializes in anxiety and stress. She studied English language and literature at Homerton College in Cambridge.

Christopher Morvillo and Neda Morvillo

A lawyer with Clifford Chance, Chris Morvillo was among the team that represented Mike Lynch during his trial. Morvillo is an American citizen.

He was an assistant U.S. attorney for the Southern District of New York from 1999 to 2005, and he worked on the criminal investigation stemming from the 9/11 terrorist attacks.

Morvillo was a graduate of Fordham University School of Law and Villanova University.

Neda Morvillo, his wife, owns a hand-crafted jewelry company under her maiden name, Neda Nassiri. The company’s website said she has been designing and making jewelry for over 20 years.

In a post on LinkedIn after the conclusion of Lynch’s trial, Chris Morvillo acknowledged his family for their support during the case.

“And, finally, a huge thank you to my patient and incredible wife, Neda Morvillo, and my two strong, brilliant, and beautiful daughters, Sabrina Morvillo and Sophia Morvillo.  None of this would have been possible without your love and support. I am so glad to be home.

And they all lived happily ever after…."

The captain of Mike Lynch's superyacht is being investigated by Italian prosecutors: report

  • The captain of a yacht that sank off Sicily is being investigated by Italian prosecutors, Reuters reported.
  • The Bayesian yacht went down last week, claiming the lives of seven on board, including Mike Lynch.
  • James Cutfield was questioned on Sunday and will be interrogated again on Tuesday, per local media.

Insider Today

The captain of the superyacht that sank in the Mediterranean last week, claiming the lives of tech tycoon Mike Lynch and six others, is being investigated for potential manslaughter and shipwreck charges, Reuters reported , citing a judicial source.

James Cutfield, the 51-year-old captain, was questioned by prosecutors on Sunday for two hours, according to Italy's La Repubblica . The New Zealander is set to be questioned again on Tuesday, Corriere Della Sera reported .

Giovanni Rizzuti, one of two attorneys appointed to defend Cutfield, said that the yacht captain is "very shaken by the immense tragedy" and intends to defend himself, according to the outlet.

Another attorney, Aldo Mordiglia, told the Washington Post by email that Cutfield is under investigation for potential manslaughter charges.

The Bayesian, an 184-foot superyacht, sank off the coast of Porticello, Sicily, last week.

Fifteen people, including Lynch's wife Angela Bacares , were rescued, while seven others — including Lynch and his 18-year-old daughter Hannah — have been confirmed dead.

An investigation into the exact cause of the sinking is ongoing, but some have criticized the crew for supposed shortcomings.

Giovanni Costantino, the CEO of the Italian Sea Group, which owns Perini Navi, the firm that built the Bayesian in 2008, blamed the crews for not following protocol and failing to prepare for the storm.

He told the Financial Times that the yacht sank in 16 minutes but that the vessel was "designed to be absolutely stable" as it had the second-tallest mast in the world.

When the yacht started taking on water, the skipper should have locked everything up and gathered all passengers at the safe point, and no one should've been in their cabin, in line with protocol, Costantino told the outlet.

Related stories

In an interview with Reuters , Costantino said the yacht's crew members made the "incredible mistake" of not being prepared for the powerful storm that rolled in.

Franco Romani, a nautical architect who was part of the team that designed the yacht, told La Stampa the Bayesian was built to go to sea in "any weather" and that a side hatch that was left open could have let water enter the vessel, per Reuters.

Italian prosecutors said during a press conference on Saturday that they had opened a manslaughter investigation.

Ambrogio Cartosio, the head of the public prosecutor's office of Termini Imerese, said he was investigating a "crime hypothesis" of culpable shipwreck and manslaughter.

It's unclear if other crew members will be probed, Reuters reported, adding that in Italy being under investigation does not automatically result in official charges or implied guilt.

Corriere Della Serra reported that investigators have asked Cutfield's deputy, Tijs Koopmans, to stay in Sicily to be questioned again, but they didn't specify whether he was under investigation.

NEW IMAGES OF REBEL 50 G ARE NOW AVAILABLE

The Rebel family is enhanced with a new model that conveys the characteristics of the brand like never before: dynamism and versatility on the one side, with safety and comfort on the other. The Rebel 50 G is the perfect embodiment of this balance, as it breaks the rules without making ostentatious strides. It stands out immediately with its original and unprecedented colour hues, which range between shades of grey and powder; called Stingray, it is a tribute to the brand’s elegant and iridescent livery.

Characterised by a sense of balance and continuity of form typical of Christian Grande’s style, its profile is captivating for the sense of continuity created between the aft-deck and main deck, and stands out for its unconventional design. It is positioned between the market of classic ribs and that of open boats, this transition is underscored by its profiles in tapered foam, which guarantee safe mooring and add sportiness without affecting its sleek side profile.

The special feature of the 50 G is its large window, designed as a natural continuation of the tube to create light and transparency inside, and give this model a look that immediately stands out from the rest. Grande explained that “the glass portion seems deliberately suspended to suggest an enthralling sensation of floating”.

The glass, which creates a closed and protected space, distinguishes this model from the others in the same range: the G, which is a closed, collected and powerful shape with soft curves, refers to the possibility of creating a closed space that is in total continuity with the external environment. In addition to the two side windows, it is also possible to add a sliding rear window, to completely separate the interior and exterior and accommodate its use as an open boat with the main advantages of a cruiser, such as comfort while on the water and protection in the event of adverse weather conditions.

The main deck is an area of infinite transparency, literally flooded with natural light and capable of offering a breathtaking panoramic view at any time of day. This large living area offers the wheelhouse, an extractable television aft of the helm seats, refrigerator and kitchen cabinet with ice maker, as well as a comfortable L-shaped sofa that offers generous depth and a hi-low table that can transform into a large dining table (to which chairs can be added). Furnished in total continuity with its external area, it becomes a single environment with the stern area depending on whether the windows are open. An extendible and electric roller blind with arms offers the possibility of shading the external area; if more shade is desired, a system of carbon poles has been designed for the beach area in order to create shelter from the sun across the external deck.

The external spaces of the Rebel 50 G offer very large and professional mooring surfaces typical of larger boats, both at the stern and bow, also because it is made for demanding boat owners with expertise on the water. The walkaround configuration ensures great safety when on board, and the large stern and bow sun decks enhance the enjoyment of its design. The bow offers a large sun deck, and is considered the most romantic area of the model with its corner chaise lounge ideal for soaking in panoramic views, especially at sunset. Christian Grande noted, “This area is intended to be an invitation to see motoring as a relaxed flight over water”. The optional roof also makes the Rebel 50 G a model suitable for markets other than the Mediterranean, lending itself to a wide variety of climatic conditions.

The stern, whose sporty profile is a nod to the automotive world, has an up&down platform that allows the 2.50-metre tender to be hauled. It can be configured in four different ways: Garage Sunpad offers a large area dedicated to relaxation, with a long sofa and a large, comfortable sun deck behind it; Forward Lounge offers a space furnished with a long C-shaped sofa and an extendible table in its centre that can be a very large dining area or a living area with a sun deck and cushion, according to need, while Stern Lounge has two opposing sofas, facing the sea, which can be joined together if desired, and a table in the centre. Lastly, Free Standing is furnished with three large armchairs and two small round tables, creating an informal area to enjoy a relaxing, convivial and versatile experience on the water.

The interiors are furnished with Ceppo di Gre’ marble, a porous natural stone with a refined grey-blue hue that is unusual on a 50-footer, as it is typical of large yachts. The choice of this material was prompted by the desire to create atmospheres characterised by an unostentatious elegance created by natural and not overtly shiny materials wit The area below deck hosts a refrigerator, oven, and various storage spaces. Two layouts are available below deck, which offer ample storage space, voluminous areas and ample privacy. The first configuration has two cabins: an owner’s cabin with a double bed at the bow and a VIP cabin amidships with very large separate sliding beds (90 centimetres wide each), which can be joined together if desired. The second layout, Living, offers a single large cabin amidships, while the bow is furnished as a comfortable and welcoming lounge with long sofas, a table and wet bar.

The rooms are more than two metres in height, to guarantee the maximum level of comfort. In the same vein, both configurations feature a bathroom with a shower of dimensions typically found on larger boats. Four variants are available: Tonic White, Daikiri Touch, Spicy Honey and Velvet Mist.

The first model is powered by a pair of Volvo Penta IPS 950 HP engines, which guarantee a maximum speed of 36 knots and a cruising speed of 28.

Who are Mike Lynch and the other people missing after a yacht sank in Sicily?

Search teams are scouring waters along Italy’s southwestern shore, where a luxury sailing yacht sank early Monday. Six people are known to be missing, including British tech tycoon Mike Lynch and his daughter, and Morgan Stanley International Chairman Jonathan Bloomer and his wife.

Faced with the possibility that some people might have been trapped inside the ship when it sank in a storm, dive teams (including cave divers from the local fire brigade) have been looking for ways to enter the vessel.

The Palermo Coast Guard told NPR on Tuesday that such an operation is complicated by the depth and position of the hull, which lies on the seabed at a depth of around 50 meters, about a half-mile from the port in Porticello, Sicily.

Lynch, a mathematician and longtime tech entrepreneur, was on a vacation voyage that apparently doubled as a celebration of his recent acquittal on federal fraud charges in the U.S. At least two members of his legal team were reportedly on the boat.

Here’s what we know about Lynch and the tragic situation off Sicily’s coast:

Who is Mike Lynch?

Lynch, 59, made his name as the founder and longtime leader of Autonomy, a search engine and software company that helped companies manage information. Hewlett-Packard bought Autonomy for $11 billion in 2011, but Lynch then faced accusations — and then federal charges — that he had misrepresented his company’s financial health and prospects. Lynch denied the claims, saying HP was blaming him for its own problems.

Lynch was indicted on multiple fraud and conspiracy counts in late 2018, months after Autonomy’s former chief financial officer, Sushovan Hussain, was convicted of fraud (he was later sentenced to five years in prison).

Lynch successfully delayed extradition from the U.K. until May 2023 . Earlier this year, the case finally culminated in a lengthy trial in San Francisco that ended with Lynch’s acquittal of all charges against him in June , after he testified on his own behalf.

Also acquitted was Stephen Chamberlain, Autonomy’s former finance VP. But on Saturday — just two days before Lynch was caught in a boating catastrophe — Chamberlain was killed in a car accident , after he was struck while out for a run.

Lynch earned a Ph.D. in adaptive pattern recognition from Cambridge University. In 2006, he was awarded an Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) honor for his work in the U.K.’s tech industry. After selling Autonomy, he founded an investment group focused on startups emerging from Cambridge University.

Who else was aboard?

Survivors include Lynch's wife, Angela Bacares, along with Charlotte Golunski, who works at Invoke Capital, Lynch’s venture capital firm. Golunski was on the ship with her daughter, Sofia, who had just celebrated her first birthday. In an interview with La Repubblica , Golunski said she held her little girl as she floated in darkness, using all her strength to keep her arms up and prevent Sofia from drowning. Sophia’s father was also onboard and survived.

Ayla Ronald, a lawyer who worked on Lynch’s fraud case, and her partner also escaped the wreck. Other survivors include several crew members, including two women in their early 20s who were part of the ship’s staff.

Missing along with Lynch and Bloomer are Lynch’s daughter, Hannah, 18; Bloomer’s wife, Judy; a lawyer for Lynch named Chris Morvillo; and his wife, Neda, according to local newspaper Giornale di Sicilia .

Bloomer was a partner at Arthur Andersen for some 20 years, until 1994, according to his LinkedIn profile . He then led the financial services company Prudential before taking on a number of chairman roles, including at the legal services firm DWF.

Bloomer is also currently chairman of insurance company the Hiscox Group.

“We are deeply shocked and saddened by this tragic event,” Hiscox CEO Aki Hussain said in a statement sent to NPR. “Our thoughts are with all those affected, in particular our Chair, Jonathan Bloomer, and his wife Judy, who are among the missing, and with their family as they await further news from this terrible situation.”

What happened to the yacht?

The gathering took place aboard a massive sailing yacht called Bayesian — a term that, in mathematics and statistics, refers to probability and uncertainty. The yacht’s overall length is listed at 55.9 meters (183 feet).

The Bayesian was off the coast of Porticello when it was swamped by a violent storm before dawn on Monday morning. Numerous eyewitness accounts cited a waterspout — a highly localized spiraling storm that’s essentially a marine tornado. Around that time, the Bayesian was located in the Tyrrhenian Sea, according to the Marine Traffic tracking site.

The ship, which had 22 people aboard, sank. In the aftermath, 15 people were rescued, but one died and six were unaccounted for.

What about the rescue effort?

Helicopters and marine craft have been searching for any sign of the passengers, hoping to find more survivors. Sea and cave divers have also been part of the effort.

Italy’s fire brigade, Vigili del Fuoco, says it is working on a plan for divers to enter the sunken vessel. An initial attempt on Monday was cut short after divers were able to gain only limited access , citing furniture that blocked a passageway.

When asked about the possibility of finding any other survivors of the calamity, Comandante Vincenzo Zagarola of the Italian Coast Guard told radio station RTL 102.5 on Tuesday that given how much time has elapsed, it’s difficult to imagine a good outcome for the missing passengers. But, he said, the search will continue.
