• Enforcing social distancing in every aspect
• No one except Marina Sailing staff are permitted inside offices
• Paperwork is done either online or at a desk at office entrances
• ASA tests are administered outside with ample space
• Limiting vessel capacity to better facilitate social distancing, maximum six passengers.

Marina del Rey sailing school is open! We are collaborating with city officials, the ASA, and our instructors to provide a safe, fun, and educational environment in the current climate. Two Southern California yacht clubs recognized on Top 50 list

Platinum Clubs organization names Newport Harbor YC and San Diego YC to worldwide compilation.

SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA—Newport Harbor and San Diego yacht clubs both earned a spot on the Top 50 Platinum Yacht Clubs for 2020-2021, it was recently announced. The worldwide list is compiled by Platinum Clubs of the World.

Placing on the list means a yacht club is presented with the title of “Five Star Clubs of Excellence.”

San Diego YC was founded in 1886 and has recently hosted sailing events such as Women’s Winter Invitational, Yachting Cup, the CA500, the SoCal 300, Dutch Shoe Marathon, International Masters Regatta and Lipton Cup.

Newport Harbor YC first opened its doors in 1916 and hosts the Newport to Cabo Race every two years, among other regattas.

Other yacht clubs making the Top 50 list included: Annapolis Yacht Club, Beach Point Club, Chicago Yacht Club, Cruising Yacht Club of Australia, Nassau Yacht Club (Bahamas), Raffles Marina (Singapore), Real Club Nautico de Vigo (Spain), Royal Bombay Yacht Club (India), Royal Cork Yacht Club (Ireland), The Royal Prince Alfred Yacht Club (Australia), Société des Régates du Havre (France), Yacht Club de Monaco and Yacht Club Santo Amaro (Brazil).

Two Southern California yacht clubs earned an Honorable Mention, scoring within three points of the Top 50 list: Balboa Yacht Club (Newport Beach) and California Yacht Club (Marina del Rey).

Fifty yacht clubs are selected based upon points awarded by a selected panel. A yacht club must score at least 8 points to qualify for the Top 50 list. Scoring is awarded as follows: 100 points for a top three club, 80 points for a ranking between four and 10, 60 points for 11 to 25 ranking, 40 points for 26-60 ranking, 20 points for 51-75 ranking and 10 points for 76-100 ranking.

Voting was conducted by 116 panelists from all around the world; panelists hailed from the United States, Australia, Germany, Hong Kong, India, Japan, The Netherlands, Singapore, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland and United Arab Emirates. Panelists vote every two years (odd years). Finalists are selected based upon submitted recommendations from panelists and applications from yacht clubs from around the world. A final ballot is eventually created and sent out to panelists. There is a 30-day voting period, with the election conducted electronically (via a third party).

“Points are awarded by the position and ranking that the panelist assigns to each club. The total number of points is calculated and divided by the total number of panelists who have visited a club to determine the final points score,” a Platinum Clubs of the World statement about the voting process said.

The Club Leaders Forum Advisory Board of the Platinum Clubs of the World compiled the Top 50 list. Platinum Clubs of America have been recognizing top yacht clubs for more than 20 years.

The  RS Tera is a 9 foot, one person dinghy that is modern, safe, and fun to sail. It's the perfect platform for kids to learn on and has an active racing fleet in California and beyond. OYC owns a fleet of 12 RS Teras, all of which are less than 5 years old.

The CFJ (Club Flying Junior) is a 13.5 foot, two person dinghy that is quick and responsive. It's the standard for high school and collegiate sailing across the United States, with an active fleet of younger sailors competing in Southern California as well. OYC has a fleet of 6 boats used for our Doublehanded and High School Programs.

The RS Feva is a fast, modern two person dinghy that's perfect for kids who are a little too light for the CFJ.

OYC's  No Clew is a Sonar 23 Keelboat.  No Clew is a stable, maneuverable boat that hosts OYC's Adult Learn-to-Sail and Jr. Big Boat Programs. Featuring three sails (Main, Jib, and Spinnaker), No Clew shares a lot in common with most other 20-40' sailboats and provides a great learning platform.

Oceanside Yacht Club offers a variety of summer camps for sailors of all levels.

Our youth program teaches more than just sailing skills; it teaches teamwork, sportsmanship, self-reliance and confidence — skills and experiences that will benefit our sailors for a lifetime.

The OYC Jr. Sailing Program has a place for sailors of all levels, from total beginners to experienced racers.

Our program is open to the public, and boats are provided. Most of our weekday classes run in a two week, three hour per day format. The program features certified instructors leading their students both on the water and in the classroom.

Junior sailors interested in developing racing skills and discovering their competitive side can participate in junior sailing regattas both at OYC and neighboring yacht clubs.

Beginner Sailing teaches sailors to sail solo in the RS Tera, a small boat perfect for newbies.  OYC coaches teach beginners with a focus on having fun on the water. This class is a blast!

Beginner sailing covers all of the skills needed to rig a small boat and sail it solo within the safety of the Oceanside Harbor.

Skills covered include rigging, basic sail trim, steering, and maneuvers.

It's common for sailors (particularly those 8-9 years old) to take beginner sailing a couple of times, especially if they haven't sailed since last summer. OYC coaches monitor student progress and will recommend when a student is ready to progress to Intermediate Tera Sailing or Intro to Doublehanded Sailing.

Intermediate Tera sailing is for younger, lighter weight sailors who are looking to build upon the skills they learned in beginner sailing.

Intermediate Tera sailing covers more precise sail trim and steering techniques, as well as concepts that will help them sail in windier conditions. This class also introduces racing at a novice level.

Intermediate class participants are invited to compete in OYC's Thursday Night Racing Series (races start at 6pm) to try their hand at competitive sailing.

Ages:  8-14

Weight:  50-125 lbs

Prerequisite:  Beginner Sailing or equivalent and instructor approval

Doublehanded Sailing is a class for middle and high school aged kids who have completed a beginner class and are looking to build their skills in a bigger, two-person boat.

Students will learn how to work with a partner to sail the RS Feva, a two person boat with a lot in common to the Tera; and the CFJ, a boat commonly used in high school and collegiate racing.

In addition to building upon the concepts of beginner sailing, this class introduces several new concepts related to sailing a larger boat with more than one person.

This course also introduces racing at a novice level.

Class participants are invited to compete in OYC's Thursday Night Racing Series (races start at 6pm) to try their hand at competitive sailing.

Ages:  11-17

Weight: 65-185 lbs

• Sessions 2 & 4
• $355 + applicable member dues

Our Big Boat sailing class is for middle and high school age kids who want to focus on sailing as part of a team on a bigger boat.

This program will be taught using OYC's 23' No Clew.

Students will occupy the essential crew positions on a larger keelboat, including the helm, with students rotating through tasks. Big boat sail trim and handling will be emphasized, with students learning how to set and fly a spinnaker on the downwind legs.

Safety is an important component of this course. Students will learn to deal with on the water emergencies, like a person falling overboard, or the boat suddenly taking on water. Students will also learn important techniques to safely handle the higher line and sail loading that big boats experience.

Student's successfully completing the course will be recommended to OYC's racing fleet as suitable crew people for events held year round.

Ages: 11-17

Prerequisite: Intro to Doublehanded Sailing, or equivalent.

• Sessions 1, 3, and 5

The Tera Race Team is for kids that want to sail fast, with a focus on advanced sail trim and boat handling concepts that help eke out every last bit of a boat's potential.

This course has a significant racing component, with sailors learning speed, starting, and tactical tips to help them on the racecourse.

Class participants are invited to compete in OYC's Thursday Night Racing Series (races start at 6pm) for friendly local competiton.

Weight: 50-125 lbs

Prerequisite: Intro to Doublehanded Sailing or Intermediate Tera Sailing (or equivalent) and instructor approval.

• Tuesdays and Thursdays, 3-6 pm
• $695 for all sessions (10 weeks total)
• $159 per individual 2-week session
• Tuition excludes applicable member dues

Performance Sailing is for kids that want to sail fast, with a focus on advanced sail trim and boat handling concepts that help eke out every last bit of a boat's potential.

This class is taught using OYC's fleet of FJs. Students owning Lasers or Lido 14s are welcome to join the FJs for practice.

• $215 + applicable member dues

Sail every day, all the time!

This pass is good for every summer class OYC offers.

Summer passholders can reserve a seat for any session by e-mail ([email protected]) or can drop in on a stand-by basis if they prefer.

There is one caveat; Pass holders who cancel a reserved class or who fail to show up to at least 60% of a reserved class's days will be assessed a cancellation fee equal to that paid by a non-pass holder at the time of cancellation. For no-shows, this is 100% of the standard course fee.

Changes will be a accommodated based on class availability, and change requests must be made at least 24 hours prior to a class beginning.

Cancellations are charged a fee that varies based on our refund policy.

Refund Policy

For courses more than two days in duration, refunds will be charged a fee that varies depending on how soon before the class start date the cancellation is received.

• 14+ days - no fee
• 7-13 days - 15% fee
• 1-6 days - 50% fee

For classes lasting one or two days, students receive a full refund if the request is received at least 24 hours before the class begins.

There are no refunds delivered after the class start date except in situations where OYC cancels more than a quarter of scheduled class days, in which case you will be refunded on a pro-rated basis.

Gear Checklist

Pfd (lifejacket).

OYC Requires that sailors wear a US Coast Guard Approved Type III PFD at all times on the water. The best PFDs feature front pockets and a compact design to minimize the possibility of snagging.

Sunscreen + Hat

A good hat keeps the sun off, and regularly applied sunscreen protects what the hat cannot.

For RS Tera sailors, flip flops will suffice.

For FJ and Big Boat sailors, closed toe shoes are required.

A watch is essential for any class that covers racing, but is not needed for Beginner or Adventure Sailing. Sailor's watches are waterproof and always feature a countdown timer. Sailors can buy a suitable watch from OYC for $25.

Hydration is essential.

All of our classes feature a 15-20 min snack break.

Founded March 11, 1969 — Westlake Yacht Club (WYC) is a private club owned and operated by its Members. Membership is open to everyone. Most Members live in the surrounding communities of Westlake Village, Thousand Oaks, Agoura Hills and Calabasas. WYC is a sailing club with strong and varied social activities. It is not necessary to live on the lake or own a boat to become a member. Westlake Yacht Club offers reciprocity with other recognized Yacht Clubs in the US and abroad.  WYC was the Southern California Yachting Association, Senior Class Yacht Club of the Year in 1998.

The Clubhouse is located at the Landing on the Lake in Westlake Village.

Sailing: WYC promotes sailing and racing for adults and children. There is a Summer Sailing Academy for young adults ages 9 - 17. Regattas are held at least once a month on a Sunday afternoons.  Open sailing is available outside of scheduled regattas and events.    

Social Activities : The Clubhouse and Bar are open to members and guests on Friday evenings, on Sunday afternoons during scheduled regattas and for parties, meetings and social events. Barbecues occur most Friday evenings April through October. There are dinner dances and theme parties including the annual Commodore's Ball, New Year’s Eve, Sweetheart Ball and Halloween.

WYC is organized into fleets : The fleets host events based upon the fleet’s special interest. Currently the fleets of WYC are: Sailing Fleet (C-18s and C-14s and Lasers), Blue Water Fleet, Nautical Fleet, Friendship Fleet and the Kayak Fleet.  For a brief summary of the activities of each fleet CLICK HERE.

Olympic GOLD Champions

One of the most historic and memorable events in Westlake Yacht Club history will always be members Allison Jolly and Lynne Jewell winning the Gold Medal at the 1988 Summer Olympic Games in Seoul, South Korea.

Their "Road to the Gold" began in 1987 when I was Commodore. Allison and Lynne had two 470 Olympic Class boats. Their logistical challenge was moving them from major regattas all over the country a few times a month. That challenge was solved by Catalina Yachts owner Frank Butler. Catalina was one of the largest boat manufacturers in the world with their factory on Victory Boulevard in Woodland Hills; every day they shipped boats all over the country and was able to assist moving the two boats so all Allison and Lynne had to do was sail.

At the US Olympic Trials in Newport, Rl, in June 1988,they started poorly but rose to the top and won the privilege of representing the United States at the Olympic Games. Their Olympic Trials medal lives in our trophy case.

At the Summer Olympic Games in Seoul, Allison and Lynn were considered a long shot. They placed third in their first race. In the next race they capsized twice, but remained in contention They finished strong in the remaining races and won the gold medal convincingly. The Washington Post wrote they "blew the competition out of the water."

Every year we celebrate their victory with the Olympic Gold Cup Regatta. Staff Commodore Larry Warner made a huge replica of the Gold Medal which hangs on a wall in the club.

ADDED NOTES : Allison Jolly and Lynne Jewell Shore became the first women to win an Olympic gold medal in sailing at the 1988 Olympic Games in South Korea.

The sailing competition of the '88 Games was the first time that a separate event was created exclusively for women athletes. The inaugural women's 470 Olympic competition featured teams from 21 nations. This historic performance earned them the Rolex Yachtswoman of the Year honors.

The 56-metre Bayesian , which was moored off the coast of Porticello, near Palermo, capsized shortly before 5am when the area was hit by a tornado , with 15 guests rescued from the water. It has been reported that four of the missing passengers are British and two are American, while one body has been recovered. Salvatore Cocina, director general of Sicily’s civil protection agency, told the BBC that 18-year-old Hannah Lynch was confirmed to be missing with her father, along with the yacht’s chef, Ricardo Thomas. At the time it sank, the British-flagged superyacht was carrying 10 crew members and 12 passengers, with Mr Lynch’s wife Angela Bacares among those rescued, local media has reported. Among those to be saved is Charlotte Golunski and her husband James Emsley, who had been on board with their one-year-old daughter Sofia when the storm began to violently sway the boat. She said: “It was the end of the world and my husband and I were struggling to stand up.” As the yacht sank, the family were thrown into the water. “For two seconds, I lost my daughter in the sea, then quickly hugged her amid the fury of the waves.” “I held her afloat with all my strength, my arms stretched upwards to keep her from drowning,” she added. ‘It was all dark. In the water, I couldn’t keep my eyes open. I screamed for help but all I could hear around me was the screams of others.” Ms Golunski, Mr Emsley and Sofia are all being treated in hospital. An Italian doctor at the paediatric hospital in Palermo who treated the family told local media: “She told me that while they were sleeping, at a certain point the yacht overturned due to the tornado, and they found themselves in the water. “Some of them immediately managed to get onto the lifeboat. And some, evidently, didn’t make it.” Karsten Borner, captain of a nearby boat said that his crew took on board some survivors who were on a life raft, including three who were seriously injured. Fisherman Francesco Cefalu said he sailed from the shore to the scene after seeing a flare at about 4.30am but by the time he arrived, Bayesian had already sunk, with only items such as cushions and wood floating in the water. He added: “I think they are inside, all the missing people.” Salvo Cocina of Sicily’s civil protection agency said: “They were in the wrong place at the wrong time.” One anonymous witness told Rai News: “That boat was all lit up. At about 4.30 in the morning, it was gone. A beautiful boat where there had been a party. A normal holiday spent happily at sea turned into a tragedy. “The boat was not far from the port. It took very little to raise the anchor and head for the port. Evidently, they were surprised by the storm that suddenly hit and they were unable to avoid sinking.” The vessel is understood to have belonged to Mr Lynch and was registered in a company under his wife’s name. The 59-year-old founded software giant Autonomy in 1996, and was made an OBE for services to enterprise 10 years later. In June, he was cleared of conducting a massive fraud relating to an $11bn (£8.64bn) sale to US company Hewlett Packard, a deal which netted him £800m but kicked off a 13-year legal battle. He faced more than 20 years in US prison if convicted of the fraud and conspiracy allegations, and The Times reported that he spent 13 months under house arrest awaiting the trial. A spokesperson for Mr Lynch said there was no comment. Specialist cave divers are now being flown to Sicily from the Italian mainland to assist, while a helicopter and the fire brigade have been involved in the search. A spokesman for the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) said: “We are in contact with the local authorities following an incident in Sicily, and stand ready to provide consular support to British nationals affected.” Bayesian completed several sailings in recent days, calling at various ports in Sicily, according to the ship-tracking website VesselFinder. The superyacht can accommodate up to 12 guests in six suites and is listed for rent for up to €195,000 (£166,000) a week. She was built in 2008 by Italian company Perini Navi and has previously won an award for best exterior styling at the 2009 World Superyacht Awards. On Monday, it transpired Mr Lynch’s co-defendant in the US court case, Stephen Chamberlain, was fatally injured in a road accident two days before Mr Lynch went missing. Mr Chamberlain, Autonomy’s former vice-president of finance alongside chief executive Lynch, was hit by a car in Cambridgeshire on Saturday morning while out running and was placed on life support, Reuters reported, citing a person familiar with the matter. “He was a courageous man with unparalleled integrity, and we deeply miss him,” his lawyer Gary Lincenberg said in a statement. “He fought successfully to clear his good name, which lives on through his wonderful family.” After leaving Autonomy in 2012, Mr Chamberlain worked as chief operating officer for cybersecurity firm Darktrace and volunteered as a finance director for Cambridge United soccer club, according to his LinkedIn profile. Mr Chamberlain faced the same charges of fraud and conspiracy as his former boss for allegedly scheming to inflate the company’s value before it was sold but was also cleared of all charges. Cambridgeshire Police did not name Mr Chamberlain but were appealing for witnesses after a collision between a pedestrian and a car had taken place in Newmarket Road in Stretham. Officers said a blue Vauxhall Corsa was travelling between Stretham and Wicken on the A1123 when the collision happened at about 10.10am on Saturday. They added a man in his fifties had been taken to hospital with serious injuries. The driver of the car, a 49-year-old woman from Haddenham, remained at the scene and was assisting officers with their inquiries. Ricardo Thomas, a Canadian citizen with an Antiguan passport, died after a tornado over the ocean, known as a water spout, hit the luxury yacht owned by British tech tycoon Mike Lynch in the early hours of yesterday. Mr Thomas has been named in local Antiguan media and on social media as Recaldo Thomas. In a series of emotive posts online, friends described him as ‘kind’ and ‘a friend to everyone’. Facebook has been flooded with posts from his families and friends, saying their last goodbyes to the chef. Rose Marie described him as ‘my dearest friend, my partner in crime’, adding: ‘An honour and a pleasure to have been your friend, it just wasn’t long enough ….we had so much to conquer. ‘Love to the Recaldo Thomas family… I am so sorry. ‘Such a very special person for many of us, the laughter, the great kindness the generosity… the love… he had so much to give… RIP Ric.’ Sharing pictures of parties, dinners and travels, loved ones described him as ‘the smiliest, friendliest, most supportive chef in the yachting industry’. Cheers to the legend!’ Erica Lay wrote: ‘RIP to lovely chef Recaldo Thomas who touched the hearts of many over his vastly diverse and lengthy career at sea, and left lasting memories for all who crossed his path. ‘I know someone was up there was waiting for you with a large rum and a hug whilst his feet were tippy tapping my friend.’ Why did the superyacht Bayesian sink? Hatches and doors left open overnight on the superyacht may have caused it to capsize, a sailing expert has said. Sam Jefferson, editor of magazine Sailing Today, said that such incidents are ‘incredibly rare’, describing the chances of a vessel being hit by a waterspout as ‘minuscule’. It is believed the vessel was struck by a tornado over the water, known as a waterspout. Weather records show temperatures reached around 33C the day before the sinking, which may have led to the people on board to leave the doors open. Mr Jefferson said: ‘I would have said that the boat got hit very hard by the wind, it was pinned over on its side. ‘I imagine all the doors were open because it was hot, so there were enough hatches and doors open that it filled with water very quickly and sank like that. ‘The reason it got pinned over so hard was because the mast is huge. It acted almost like a sail. (It) pushed the boat hard over on its side. ‘(The boat) filled with water before it could right. This is all speculation, but that’s the only logical explanation.’ In pictures: Divers facing rescue challenge in Sicily Specialist divers continued their search for six people who remain missing in the water. Divers ‘listening for timed banging noise, similar to Titan submarine’ Divers could be listening out for a ‘timed banging noise’ as they continue to scour the wreck of the superyacht off Sicily’s coast to find six missing people. Dr Jean-Baptiste Souppez, who teaches mechanical, biomedical and design engineering at Aston University, said: ‘A sign the rescuers may be looking for is a banging noise at regular intervals. ‘This is common practice on submarines, and was one of the signs the search mission for the Titan submarine was looking for after it went missing last year.’ Whatever is left of Bayesian is currently 164ft underwater, posing a challenge to rescue teams. There is still slim possibility that air pockets exist within the sunken sailboat, and the trapped passengers are still alive. But Dr Souppez said such possibility was ‘simply impossible to predict’. Former school of Mike Lynch’s daughter ‘shocked’ by tragedy The former school of Hannah Lynch, Mike Lynch’s daughter, said its ‘thoughts are with their family and everyone involved’ as the pair remain missing at sea. Heidi Randall, the mother of Leah Randall, told Sky News: ‘I am beyond relieved that my daughter’s life was spared by the grace of God. ‘It does not make it any easier living with the heartache of those who have lost their lives or are missing. ‘My very deepest condolences to the chef’s family as they formed a great friendship.’ Haunting final Instagram post of chef before he died This is Ricardo Thomas’ haunting post on Instagram – just 10 days before he died off the coast of Sicily after. Mr Thomas had been working on the superyacht as a chef when the tornado struck. His body was recovered from the water near the site, more than 24 hours later. His last picture on Instagram shows the sun setting over the sea near Santa Marina Salina, one of the main towns on Salina, one of the Aeolian Islands. Tributes paid to ‘kind, loved’ chef after body recovered Tributes have been paid to a chef whose body has been recovered near the site of the Bayesian superyacht sinking off the coast of Sicily. Ricardo Thomas, a Canadian citizen with an Antiguan passport, died after a tornado over the ocean, known as a water spout, hit the luxury yacht yesterday. Two more survivors named Two more survivors of the Bayesian yacht disaster have been named as Leah Randall and Katja Chicken. The two women are South African, Sky News reported, and they were members of the crew on the boat. Captain of rescue ship says yacht sank in ‘two minutes’ Captain Karsten Borner, who brought survivors of the Bayesian disaster on board his own boat, has said he took precautions to save his own vessel in the storm. The divers have faced challenges when searching for those onboard, with Marco Tilotta, who is coordinating the search and rescue, describing it as a ‘prohibitive’ search. Emergency responder Luca Cari told Italian daily Giornale Di Sicilia: ‘They can stay underwater for a maximum of 12 minutes, two of which are needed to go up and down. ‘So the real time to be able to carry out the search is 10 minutes per dive.’ Law firm Clifford Chance ‘deeply saddened’ by sinking A spokesperson for law firm Clifford Chance said it is ‘deeply saddened’ by the sinking of superyacht Bayesian off he coast of Sicily. Vincenzo Zagarola told the PA news agency this was the working theory of officials on Sicily because it is believed the boat sank quickly and search and rescue efforts by sea and air have so far delivered no results. He said: ‘We think they are still inside the boat, that is our very hard idea. ‘Our search and rescue activity by sea and air has gone on for around 36 hours. ‘Of course, we do not exclude that they are not inside the boat, but we know the boat sank quickly. ‘We suppose that the six people missing may not have had time to get out of the boat.’ Bayesian ‘practically intact’ on seabed, diver says The yacht which sank off the coast of Palermo yesterday morning remains largely undamaged at the bottom of the Mediterranean, a diver has said. Speaking to Italian newspaper Il Messaggero , Marco Tilotta said the Bayesian was ‘practically intact’. Mr Tilotta, who works for Palermo’s fire and rescue service, said: ‘It is resting on its side on the starboard side. It has no gashes, no signs of impact.’ Charlotte Golunski and her family pictured leaving hospital Charlotte Golunski, who was one of the first Bayesian passengers to speak out after the sinking, has left hospital in Palermo. She gave a memorable account of the terror she felt on Monday morning as a storm hit the boat in an interview with Italian newspaper La Repubblica. Ms Golunski said: ‘It was all dark. In the water I couldn’t keep my eyes open. I screamed for help but all I could hear around me was the screams of others.’ She saved the life of her one-year-old daughter Sophia by holding her above the waves, and the pair ended up at Di Cristina paediatric hospital in Palermo together. Her husband James Emslie also survived the sinking and was taken to a different hospital in the Sicilian city. The family of three was pictured leaving Di Cristina hospital together. Divers manage to crack open way into the Bayesian Diving teams have managed to make a way to get inside the Bayesian, which has sunk some 50 metres. Giornale De Sicilia , a Sicilian newspaper, says diverts from the fire department and port authority have opened a hole in the hull. The rescue teams also now have a clearer idea of the condition of the Bayesian – including that the hull is still intact. The yacht, La Repubblica reports, shows no sign of colliding with rocks or other ships. It has tilted 90° to the right and has sunk 50 metres. The working theory is that the ship was flooded with water from the stern or bow in a short amount of time. Furniture and debris have swamped the cabins. Divers are working in 35-minute ships, taking 12 minutes to go back up to the surface. Family of Steve Chamberlain to recreate his final route The family of Steve Chamberlain are hoping to complete his final running route after he died while out running in his home town in Cambridgeshire. Teddy, his son, posted on the social networking website Strava that Mr Chamberlain’s family will run the route, starting from the outside of the town of Stretham, to Ely, in memory of Steve after his death. Cambridgeshire Police said 52-year-old Mr Chamberlain died in hospital after he was struck by a car on Saturday. A statement from his lawyer said he was hit ‘while out running’. Under his dad’s final Strava post, Teddy wrote: ‘We are planning to complete this run for Dad (after I train of course!). ‘If any of you would like to pay tribute and run it with us I will keep you updated. Search teams are scouring waters along Italy’s southwestern shore, where a luxury sailing yacht sank early Monday. Six people are known to be missing, including British tech tycoon Mike Lynch and his daughter, and Morgan Stanley International Chairman Jonathan Bloomer and his wife. Faced with the possibility that some people might have been trapped inside the ship when it sank in a storm, dive teams (including cave divers from the local fire brigade) have been looking for ways to enter the vessel. The Palermo Coast Guard told NPR on Tuesday that such an operation is complicated by the depth and position of the hull, which lies on the seabed at a depth of around 50 meters, about a half-mile from the port in Porticello, Sicily. Lynch, a mathematician and longtime tech entrepreneur, was on a vacation voyage that apparently doubled as a celebration of his recent acquittal on federal fraud charges in the U.S. At least two members of his legal team were reportedly on the boat. Here’s what we know about Lynch and the tragic situation off Sicily’s coast:  Who is Mike Lynch? Lynch, 59, made his name as the founder and longtime leader of Autonomy, a search engine and software company that helped companies manage information. Hewlett-Packard bought Autonomy for $11 billion in 2011, but Lynch then faced accusations — and then federal charges — that he had misrepresented his company’s financial health and prospects. Lynch denied the claims, saying HP was blaming him for its own problems. Lynch was indicted on multiple fraud and conspiracy counts in late 2018, months after Autonomy’s former chief financial officer, Sushovan Hussain, was convicted of fraud (he was later sentenced to five years in prison). Lynch successfully delayed extradition from the U.K. until May 2023 . Earlier this year, the case finally culminated in a lengthy trial in San Francisco that ended with Lynch’s acquittal of all charges against him in June , after he testified on his own behalf. Also acquitted was Stephen Chamberlain, Autonomy’s former finance VP. But on Saturday — just two days before Lynch was caught in a boating catastrophe — Chamberlain was killed in a car accident , after he was struck while out for a run. Lynch earned a Ph.D. in adaptive pattern recognition from Cambridge University. In 2006, he was awarded an Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) honor for his work in the U.K.’s tech industry. After selling Autonomy, he founded an investment group focused on startups emerging from Cambridge University. Who else was aboard? Survivors include Lynch's wife, Angela Bacares, along with Charlotte Golunski, who works at Invoke Capital, Lynch’s venture capital firm. Golunski was on the ship with her daughter, Sofia, who had just celebrated her first birthday. In an interview with La Repubblica , Golunski said she held her little girl as she floated in darkness, using all her strength to keep her arms up and prevent Sofia from drowning. Sophia’s father was also onboard and survived. Ayla Ronald, a lawyer who worked on Lynch’s fraud case, and her partner also escaped the wreck. Other survivors include several crew members, including two women in their early 20s who were part of the ship’s staff. Missing along with Lynch and Bloomer are Lynch’s daughter, Hannah, 18; Bloomer’s wife, Judy; a lawyer for Lynch named Chris Morvillo; and his wife, Neda, according to local newspaper Giornale di Sicilia . Bloomer was a partner at Arthur Andersen for some 20 years, until 1994, according to his LinkedIn profile . He then led the financial services company Prudential before taking on a number of chairman roles, including at the legal services firm DWF. The gathering took place aboard a massive sailing yacht called Bayesian — a term that, in mathematics and statistics, refers to probability and uncertainty. The yacht’s overall length is listed at 55.9 meters (183 feet). The Bayesian was off the coast of Porticello when it was swamped by a violent storm before dawn on Monday morning. Numerous eyewitness accounts cited a waterspout — a highly localized spiraling storm that’s essentially a marine tornado. Around that time, the Bayesian was located in the Tyrrhenian Sea, according to the Marine Traffic tracking site. The ship, which had 22 people aboard, sank. In the aftermath, 15 people were rescued, but one died and six were unaccounted for.   What about the rescue effort? Helicopters and marine craft have been searching for any sign of the passengers, hoping to find more survivors. Sea and cave divers have also been part of the effort. Italy’s fire brigade, Vigili del Fuoco, says it is working on a plan for divers to enter the sunken vessel. An initial attempt on Monday was cut short after divers were able to gain only limited access , citing furniture that blocked a passageway. When asked about the possibility of finding any other survivors of the calamity, Comandante Vincenzo Zagarola of the Italian Coast Guard told radio station RTL 102.5 on Tuesday that given how much time has elapsed, it’s difficult to imagine a good outcome for the missing passengers. But, he said, the search will continue.
