"I loved the look of boats from age, well, nothing. It was the look of boats was as interesting to me as the hydrodynamics, both were equally compelling. Plan a summer cruise on the perfectly proportioned sailing yacht PranaNewly available for charter, the 51.7m sloop Prana ranks number 33 in our list of the largest sailing yachts in the world. She was launched by Alloy Yachts in July 2006 as Kokomo and was later renamed Konkordia . Upon her recent sale she was given the new name of Prana . An accomplished performance yacht, Prana has participated in numerous regattas in her time, including the Loro Piana Superyacht Regatta. Designed for use in both temperate and tropical climes, the yacht’s indoor and outdoor areas work well together. There are four main guest areas: the aft deck, flying bridge, cockpit and saloon. The aft deck has a huge U-shaped custom-made sofa, shaded by umbrellas, where guests can sit in sea breezes, watching the wake and the world go by. Aft of this, three steps down, is the cockpit, which provides a shady retreat in the heat of the day. This expansive area accommodates a outdoor dining table with both banquette and chair seating, and a couple of sofas on either side of a coffee table. Extra shade cloths extend out from the flying bridge over the the dining table. Curved sliding glass doors lead seamlessly from the cockpit to the saloon, where broad wengé floor boards echo the teak outside. A bar is just inside to port. The saloon makes the most of the yacht’s 10 metre beam with a comfortable seating area, a 10-seater dining table and plenty of space to move around. Prana can accommodate 12 guests in five cabins, which are all on one level, reached from the companionway on the starboard side of the saloon. Two double cabins are situated forward of the stairs, while two twin cabins with Pullman berths aft and the full-beam master cabin is furthest aft. Guest accommodation is decorated in an understated combination of wengé, walnut and pale fabrics. All the cabins have portholes, electric blinds, individual climate control, mood lighting and music systems. The en suite shower rooms feature marble countertops and sheet glass-lined showers. From the cockpit an open staircase with floating treads leads up to the flybridge. Under sail this is the nerve centre of the yacht, but it also provides privacy for the owners and guests – a place to retreat to from the comings and goings of the crew. The main deck area is completely dedicated to relaxation and entertainment, including a spa pool. Prana will be available for charter in the Western Mediterranean this summer at €185,000 per week. She is also available in the Caribbean in the winter. A crew of nine will be on hand to cater to guests’ needs and ensure a memorable and enjoyable time on board. Aboard a Hand-Sailed Cruise Ship From Malaga to LisbonI reach the spot at the port where Sea Cloud Spirit is waiting for her voyage and find a crowd gathered. It’s understandable; the gleaming white windjammer, with her three huge masted sails, looks nothing like any of the other ships docked. At 450 feet long, tailing off into a gold-accented bow, with 4,951 square feet of sail curled and ready for release, watching the ship come into view is a wow-factor moment. I feel like I’ve taken a step back in time, unsure whether I feel more like a pirate or some sort of royal of yore. Either way, I’ve never set foot on a ship as impressive as this. Sea Cloud Spirit is the newest in Sea Cloud Cruises’ fleet—a name that made an appearance on our Reader Choice Awards last year. With its trio of windjammers, setting sail on one of its handsome ships is a novel experience of the most sophisticated kind. It’s basically the floating version of taking a steam train through the countryside , evoking a romanticized bygone era where everyone sets off, bravely, to find adventure on unexplored lands. That’s essentially what the original Sea Cloud , a now 90-year-old four-masted beauty, did. Once the largest private sailing yacht in the world, it was first commissioned under the name Hussar by Wall Street broker Edward Francis in 1931, who gave his glamorous cereal heiress wife, Marjorie Merriweather Post, a limitless budget to decorate its interior. She took on this role with gusto, furnishing it with a wealth of distinctive antiques and a characterful design, much of which you’ll still find inside today. Together they remained at sea for at least nine months a year, heading from one exotic destination to the next. On board, there's a large sun deck for lounging in the sun. But all good things come to an end and the couple divorced in 1935. Marjorie became the sole owner, renamed it Sea Cloud and married a man who’d go on to become the US ambassador in Moscow. The ship thus went on to fulfill a number of political roles, including a stint in Leningrad as a floating diplomatic palace and use as a floating weather station during World War II, when its majestic masts were sadly demounted. After the war ended, a four-year refurbishment saw it restored to former glory and it now serves as the flagship for Sea Cloud Cruises alongside two newer ships, each honoring the traditional seamanship and style of the original. You won’t find any of Majorie’s antiques on Sea Cloud Spirit . But what the boat lacks in wartime stories to tell, it makes up for in luxuriousness. It’s much larger than the original, with a shining mahogany body and whitewashed exterior, space for 136 guests and 90 crew, glorious double bedrooms with balconies, a large sun deck, indoor and outdoor dining spaces, and a spa with gym. The cabins are surprisingly roomy and tastefully nautical. I step on board and am shown to my room by friendly host José, who is possibly one of the smiliest people I’ve ever met, and all too willing to help with anything I need. The cabins are striking and surprisingly roomy with plush double beds, suitably nautical artwork, smart carpets and spacious balconies replete with loungers. I especially love the bathrooms, with their shiny taps and statement golden sinks, L’Occitane hair and body products ,and plenty of big fluffy towels. I help myself to a glass of Champagne from the bottle on the coffee table and ready myself to set sail to distant lands (in this instance, Malaga to Cádiz, and then off to Lisbon ), before heading out to the Lido Deck bar. This is one of the best spots on the boat. Throughout the four days you get to know the staff, and bar manager Anton is one of the cheeriest. He’s an old hand, having worked for Sea Cloud for over a decade, greeting you by name every time and even querying where one of our party was when the seasickness proved too much one evening. Ask him about his Martini tastings—it’s a good way to spend an hour. There’s plenty of seating on the Lido Deck and having an outside dining spot, something the original ship lacks, means mealtimes with a view and a breath of salty air. The buffet changes daily, with a wealth of salads, quiches, fish, chicken, steaks, and pastas prepared freshly in front of your eyes. It’s a treat watching the chefs work; a highlight was witnessing a giant tuna arrive whole on two men’s shoulders, an apple tucked inside its huge mouth, before sashimi and steaks were expertly whittled out one by one and served up with shavings of fresh wasabi. The inaugural gala dinner in the main dining room provides an opportunity to get dressed up; plates unveiled with a flourish from under a dome and a Champagne top-up never too far away. There's no shortage of space to sunbathe on the top deck. Casting off any comparisons with mega cruise ships, the entertainment on Sea Cloud Spirit all pays homage to a life at sea. On one particularly nice day, we all scrambled onto the lifeboat dinghies to circle the ship in her full glory. A few members of our party got to scale the ropes up to the masts—admittedly, I was jealous when I was not selected for this—and in the evening a handful of staff, including our lovely José, sang sea shanties on the deck. But the most exciting event is the releasing of the sails. Every morning I headed up to the top deck, pushing open the doors to bobbing seas and blue skies, to watch the sailors work. In my mind, I imagined them billowing down within seconds, like something out of a Pirates of the Caribbean film, unfurling with a flourish before the ship steams off into the distance—but I was wrong. It’s a long process, with over 10 people diligently winding and unwinding the ropes up in the sails and on the deck, working in tandem to release each individual part of the sail, until they are all finally free. Watching this, I felt like I’d learned something, and that went double after a tour of the engine room and ‘the bridge’, aka the ship’s control centre. Where possible, the boat utilizes wind power from the sails, but an average of 80 tonnes of fuel is used for every four-day trip. The ship is approximately 450 feet, with nearly 5,000 square feet of sail. There are multiple bookable excursions for days on land, including a variety of food and boozy tastings, and guided tours via foot, e-bike and tuk-tuk. We were shown around pretty Cádiz , culminating in a stop off at a local tapas restaurant for a taste of the local delicacies. This city is famous for its orange trees, which compete with the blossoms to fill the roadsides with brilliant flashes of color. It's from here that Chanel sources the fruit for its fragrances. “People in Cádiz say that when they’ve met the right romantic match, they’ve found the other half of their orange,” says our guide. In Lisbon, we sidestepped the need to traverse the steep hillsides on foot by shuttling up to the best miradouros (viewpoints, to you and me) by tuk-tuk, then off to a Portuguese wine tasting at a very chic Art Deco museum-come-wine bar. Grazing on olives, cured hams and cheese while an expert talked us through various Portuguese wines was another highlight of the trip. But as wonderful as days spent exploring can be, the real draw in this instance is the ship itself. Seeing the sun dip below the sea in the evenings while hanging over the railings, watching dolphins leap out of the water from the cabin balcony, the sound of the waves lulling me to sleep—these are my overriding memories from the trip. Even a brief bout of seasickness didn’t spoil the fun (although it certainly gave me some learnings for next time). Usually the journeying part of traveling is tedious—even the chicest business class cabin feels oppressive after 14 hours—but the time on shore wasn’t half as exciting as that spent on board. I disembarked in Lisbon with a renewed appreciation for what it must have taken to set sail way back when; and a reminder that the journey itself is as important as the destination, in one of the loveliest ways possible. Divers find 5 bodies during search of superyacht wreckage after it sank off Sicily, 1 still missingPORTICELLO, Sicily (AP) — Divers searching the wreck of a superyacht that sank off Sicily found the bodies of five passengers Wednesday and searched for one more as questions intensified about why the vessel sank so quickly when a nearby sailboat remained largely unscathed. Rescue crews brought four body bags ashore into port at Porticello. Salvatore Cocina, head of the Sicily civil protection agency, said a fifth body had been located. Divers at the scene said they would try to recover it on Thursday while continuing the search for the sixth. The discovery made clear the operation to search the hull on the seabed 50 meters (164 feet) underwater had quickly turned into a recovery one, not a rescue, given the amount of time that had passed and with no signs of life emerging over three days of searching. The Bayesian, a 56-meter (184-foot) British-flagged yacht, went down in a storm early Monday as it was moored about a kilometer (a half-mile) offshore. Civil protection officials said they believed the ship was struck by a tornado over the water, known as a waterspout, and sank quickly. Fifteen people escaped in a lifeboat and were rescued by a nearby sailboat. One body was recovered Monday — that of the ship’s chef, Recaldo Thomas, of Antigua. Thomas was born in Canada, according to his cousin David Isaac, but would visit his parents’ homeland of Antigua as a child, moving permanently to the tiny eastern Caribbean island in his early 20s. Italian officials previously listed Antigua and Canada as the nationality of people on board. The fate of six missing passengers had driven the search effort, including British tech magnate Mike Lynch , his 18-year-old daughter and associates who had successfully defended him in a recent U.S. federal fraud trial. Lynch’s spokesperson did not respond to a request for comment Wednesday. Meanwhile, investigators from the Termini Imerese Public Prosecutor’s Office were acquiring evidence for their criminal investigation, which they opened immediately after the tragedy even though no formal suspects have been publicly identified. Questions have abounded about what caused the superyacht, built in 2008 by Italian shipyard Perini Navi, to sink so quickly, when the nearby Sir Robert Baden Powell sailboat was largely spared and managed to rescue the survivors. Giovanni Costantino, head of The Italian Sea Group, which owns the shipmaker, blamed human error for the disaster, which he said took 16 minutes. “The ship sank because it took on water. From where, the investigators will say,” he told RAI state television after he met with prosecutors. Costantino cited AIS ship tracking data which he said showed the Bayesian had taken on water for four minutes when a sudden gust of wind flipped it and it continued taking on water. The ship straightened up slightly and then went down, he said. But was it merely the case of a freak waterspout that knocked the ship to its side and allowed water to pour in through open hatches? What was the position of the keel, which on a large sailboat like the Bayesian might have been retractable, to allow it to enter shallower ports? “There’s a lot of uncertainty as to whether it had a lifting keel and whether it might have been up,” said Jean-Baptiste Souppez, a fellow of the Royal Institute of Naval Architects and the editor of the Journal of Sailing Technology. “But if it had, then that would reduce the amount of stability that the vessel had, and therefore made it easier for it to roll over on its side,” he said in an interview. The captain of the sailboat that came to the Bayesian’s rescue said his craft had sustained minimal damage — the frame of a sun awning broke — even with winds that he estimated reached 12 on the Beaufort wind scale, which is the highest hurricane-strength force on the scale. He said he had remained anchored with his engines running to try to maintain the ship’s position as the storm, which was forecast, rolled in. “Another possibility is to heave anchor before the storm and to run downwind at open sea,” Karsten Bornersaid in a text message. But he said that might not have been a viable option for the Bayesian, given its trademark 75-meter (246-foot) tall mast. “If there was a stability problem, caused by the extremely tall mast, it would not have been better at open sea,” he said. Yachts like the Bayesian are required to have watertight, sub-compartments that are specifically designed to prevent a rapid, catastrophic sinking even when some parts fill with water. “So for the vessel to sink, especially this fast, you are really looking at taking water on board very quickly, but also in a number of locations along the length of the vessel, which again indicates that it might have been rolled over on its side,” Souppez said. Italian coast guard and fire rescue divers continued the underwater search in dangerous and time-consuming conditions. Because of the wreck’s depth, which requires special precautions, divers working in tag teams could only spend about 12 minutes at a time searching, though reinforcements outfitted with special equipment to enable longer dives were also on the wreck Wednesday. In all, some 27 divers were taking rotations, including four who helped with the recovery of the 2012 Costa Concordia disaster off Tuscany. They called the Porticello wreck a “little Concordia,” fire crews said in a statement, which for the first time Wednesday referred to the operation as a “recovery.” The limited dive time was designed in part to avoid decompression sickness, also known as the “bends,” which can occur when divers stay underwater for long periods and ascend too quickly, allowing nitrogen gas dissolved in the blood to form bubbles. “The longer you stay, the slower your ascent has to be,” said Simon Rogerson, the editor of SCUBA magazine. He said the tight turnaround time suggested the operation’s managers were trying to limit the risks and recovery time after each dive. “It sounds like they’re operating essentially on no decompression or very tight decompression, or they’re being extremely conservative,” he said. Additionally, the divers were working in extremely tight spaces, with debris floating around them, limited visibility and air tanks on their backs. “We are trying to advance in tight spaces, but any single thing slows us down,” said Luca Cari, spokesman for the fire rescue service. “An electric panel could set us back for five hours. These aren’t normal conditions. We’re at the limit of possibility.” “It’s not a question of entering the cabin to inspect it,” he added. “They’ve arrived at the level of the cabins, but it’s not like you can open the door.” Winfield reported from Rome and Kirka from London.
