In 1908 this two-screw ship, equipped with the most modern facilities, was launched in Hamburg as an "arrow steamer" - today one would call it a surveying ship. In fact, the elegant ship was something like a state yacht, originally built for Emperor Wilhelm II. Instead, the steamer served for decades to survey the sea around the delta of the Elbe.

Then owned by the Treloar Brothers who welcomed us on board. Historic German vessel that has been repatriated to Hamburg and subjected to a major rebuild. She is now back in steam. Current spelling is Schaarhorn. Maryport has seen the coming and going of many historic steam ships but they are all now gone.

In 1973 she was bought by millionaire sportsman Keith Schellenberg (member of the 1956 British Olympic bobsleigh team) for renovation and use as a charter boat around the Western Isles. This did not materialise and after spending time on the Tyne at Gatehead, the yacht returned to Hamburg via Maryport. She was, for some reason, renamed Schaarhorn.
