Back in 2014, I was traveling the world to earn a degree in Global Studies.

At the time, there was a new trend on the rise—one that combined the ultra-lux experience of yachting with the decidedly casual world of boat parties.

Ten years later, Yacht Week, as the company is known, remains a hot topic in travel.

In case you missed the zeitgeist, Yacht Week is a bespoke yachting adventure geared towards twenty-somethings.

Travelers gather a small crew, pay a hefty fee, and then join other like-minded partiers as their yachts crawl through the sea together. The vessels dock and link up to throw parties in the water, on the beaches—wherever.

Today, Yacht Week runs five separate revelry-centric programs: two in Croatia, two in Greece, and one in the British Virgin Islands. It’s one of the most accessible ways to get on a yacht and one of the most unforgettable party-based adventures out there.

But what is Yacht Week like today? And what sorts of travelers would enjoy this type of activity? With a solid decade of party-planning under its belt, I imagine Yacht Week is a well-oiled machine.

But let’s dig a little deeper to see what’s behind the glittery mask here. Just what’s going on with Yacht Week in 2024? And what types of festivals is it throwing on the water?

The Yacht Week experience

Think about Yacht Week as a much smaller and more boutique party cruise experience.

It’s also geared toward younger travelers. I’m seeing lots of twenty-somethings in the advertising materials, but I think a few thirty-plus attendees would go unnoticed.

Here’s how it goes : you join a yacht with a small crew, then take off into the sunset with other vessels on a seven-day romp. It’s not necessary to hire a skipper yourself or rent a yacht… though I imagine the vast majority of guests need access to both.

From there, yachts dock so that adventurers can explore unique towns in Greece, Croatia, or the British Virgin Islands.

These floating yacht communities also link up in the water so that partiers can swim and dance and drink to their heart’s end. Or they can do their own thing elsewhere—even on land.

Though guests have the benefit of being part of a large party group, they also have the freedom to lay around and stare at the stars, shop around when docked at a port, and otherwise enjoy their vacation.

Which Yacht Week destination is most popular?

Yacht Week currently operates in Croatia and Greece year-round. There’s also a special event in the British Virgin Islands scheduled for New Year.

In Greece , you can choose from Pêche or Vibras , which are geared toward different types of music.

Pêche is more squarely focused on electronic, including house, deep techno, and even disco. (I’d go with Pêche, personally.) Vibras takes yachters to more Latin-based shows and Latin music culture.

In Croatia , you can choose between Ultra and Rhythm & Waves .

The former is actually tacked on to Ultra Music Festival, allowing you to experience some of the best shows while also immersing yourself in Mediterranean sailing. Rhythm & Waves, by contrast, is more focused on grooving to hip-hop. Also not a bad idea.

The British Virgin Islands excursion focuses on sailing to some of the most stunning tropical beaches in the Caribbean.

There are also plenty of parties scheduled, including New Year’s Eve . This is a great choice for Americans who don’t want to fly across the Atlantic.

What’s the ideal demographic here?

Yacht Week is geared toward younger travelers who want to make friends while partying. It’s really that simple.

Like I mentioned above, I wouldn’t be surprised to see some thirty-somethings here. And it’s not solely about partying.

Many Yacht Weekers have returned time and time again because they loved the experience the first time around. That tells me that there’s probably a pretty cool vibe and atmosphere on the yachts. One that involves making lifelong friends, too.

Plus, you can learn a lot about sailing as you go. The Yacht Week community includes sailors, skippers, and maritime enthusiasts. There’s also a gender ratio in play to help prevent any yachts from being single-gender.

Is it safe?

I’ve read through quite a few blogs that cover first-hand Yacht Week experiences. Overwhelmingly, I’ve heard positive reviews when it comes to safety. Because Yacht Week has been operating for over a decade, the company has the benefit of experience.

Still, visitors need to be aware. Boozing on boats is a notoriously dangerous art.

However, most Yacht Week attendees mentioned smaller risks, like bumps and bruises. Most of these minor incidents seem to come from moving from boat to boat during the night and hopping into water taxis. Nothing major, in my book.

It’s definitely time we all got some adventure back in our lives and The Yacht Week has delivered it with ‘The Islands’. With routes already set to Croatia (Original / Ultra Festival / Hideout Festival routes), Greece, Montenegro and Sardinia Emerald Coast, ‘The Islands’ adds a new page to the bucket list.

The Treasured Islands – the  Bahamas were once considered the pirate islands and as part of a flotilla of 10 – 15 yachts sailing from 26 th March to 2 nd April, swashbuckling travellers can dive to sunken shipwrecks, sail clear waters and walk deserted white sand beaches. Activities include feeding and swimming with wild pigs, snorkelling with turtles, beach parties, shoreside yoga and of course, a sampling of local culture with delicious food and rum cocktails. As the sun goes down, there is treasure to be found in the stunning skies at Sunset Beach.

The Lost Islands – Tahiti and the  Polynesian islands are unique. Set alone in the middle of the vast South Pacific Ocean these islands are like entering another world. From 9 th – 16 th April and 16 th – 23 rd April, The Yacht Week takes 20 – 25 yachts to lose themselves in the natural beauty and ancient traditions of Tahiti. With gourmet Polynesian food and parties including a New Moon Bora Bora beach party, this is a pure bucket list adventure.

The Carnival Islands – explore two of the Caribbean’s most vibrant cultures. From the French chic of  Martinique to the carnival vibes of  St Lucia. There’s no better way to see in the New Year than on a yacht with friends on the open Caribbean Sea. 8 THINGS YOU SHOULD KNOW BEFORE YOU GO ON THE YACHT WEEK

Have you heard of The Yacht Week ? If not then let me introduce you to what could be the best week of your life. Back in 2014 I spent a week sailing around Greece on an all girls Yacht Week boat. We had an incredible time but there were some things I wish I would have known before the trip that could have made it even better. So here are eight things you should know before you go on The Yacht Week!

1) THE YACHT WEEK COULD BE THE BEST WEEK OF YOUR LIFE – JUST GO!

As you can see from the video above The Yacht Week looks like a lot of fun, and it is! This video is of The Yacht Week Greece trip I was on featuring some clips of our boat. I booked with one of my friends and prior to the tip I hadn’t met any of the other girls who were going to be on our sailboat. All the girls turned out to be awesome and we all made fast friends.

If you can’t get a group of friends together to book your own sailboat don’t let that stop you from going on The Yacht Week. Just find one friend to go with you and book a two-person cabin! You’ll make new friends, and have the time of your life, especially after reading all my tips so you’ll know what to expect.

2) THE YACHT WEEK IS MORE ABOUT PARTYING THAN SAILING

The Yacht Week is basically one big floating festival! If you want to have a serious week of peaceful sailing then The Yacht Week is probably not for you. You will sail from location to location but you’ll spend a lot more time partying than sailing on most of The Yacht Week routes. You need to be in the right frame of mind for this prior to the trip. So if you plan on going on The Yacht Week put your party hat on and be ready to have some fun!

3) CHOOSE YOUR YACHT WEEK ROUTE BASED ON PACE

You’ll likely look at The Yacht Week website and see a destination you want to go to and decide this is the route you want to take. I advise against this. In order to have the best time possible book a route based on the pace you want to go at.

Since I went on The Yacht Week they have added several new routes including an Italy route which they are marketing as slower paced for “sophisticated sailors and the food fanatics.” I have only been on the Greece route so I can’t vouch for this claim but if you want to do less partying, and more sailing and exploring, booking the Italy route seems like the way to go.

The Greece route I went on is labeled at a mid paced route. I love music and parties but I personally would have preferred more sailing and sight-seeing. Based on my experience, I would describe the mid paced Yacht Week routes (Greece, Montenegro and BVIs) as party routes and the fast paced routes (Croatia and Croatia Ultra) as ultra party routes.

4) SKIP SOME OF THE DAY PARTIES & EXPLORE

As I said above The Yacht Week, overall, is more about partying than anything else but you are visiting amazing places on all of their routes so I suggest skipping some of the parties and exploring your surroundings. On the Greece route there was a day party and a night party at each stop. When we docked at Hydra Island , my friend and I skipped the day party and explored the island which turned out to be one of my favorite days on the trip! There are plenty of parties so don’t worry about skipping some of them and opting to take in some sights and local culture instead.

5) SPLURGE ON A PREMIUM SAILBOAT

This is a gross topic but I have to bring it up because I would never want anyone to be in the same situation the girls on my boat were on. Our Yacht Week boat was a cheaper, economy sailboat and it was not equipped for us to be able to do anything besides pee in the toilets. That’s right, we did not have proper use of toilets on our boat for an entire week! Because of this my friend and I ended up renting several hotel rooms during Yacht Week (read Nikki Beach Porto Heli and Hotel Miranda Hydra Island ) just so we could have use of a toilet and shower.

So what is the moral of this story? Don’t go for the cheapest boat you can find. There are now four types of yachts you can book with The Yacht Week – Economy, Standard, Premium and Premium Plus. Spend the extra money to book a premium sailboat, and check that you’ll have unrestricted use of the toilet onboard before you book.

6) THE YACHT WEEK IS MORE EXPENSIVE THAN YOU THINK

I budgeted around $75 a day for food, drinks and extras for our seven-day trip and quickly realized this was not going to be enough. Upon arrival we were told we needed to go shopping for costumes for the sailing competition and parties. Next, we had to put money in for the “Kitty Fund,” which is food and drinks for the boat for the week. We also had to pitch in money to tip our skipper and pay for gas for the boat.

At The Yacht Week parties you usually get one or two free drinks with your wristband, but after, that you have to pay for your drinks. Drinking every day can get expensive, especially if you want to splurge on bottle service. If you plan to drink and eat out and don’t want to worry about running out of money, you should plan to spend around $130 USD/day.

7) YOUR SAILBOAT WILL GET DIRTY REALLY QUICKLY

We had an all-girls crew and our sailboat still got very dirty every day. In order to keep your boat from becoming filthy get everyone on your boat to agree from the start to all help clean. If everyone pitches in, it takes less than 20 minutes a day to keep your boat clean. Do your dishes right after you are done eating, and keep all your personal stuff in your own cabin. No one wants to spend a week in a tiny cramped, dirty space. This is the real Yacht Week v. your Instagram Yacht Week…

8) CHOOSE WHO YOU BOOK WITH WISELY

The last thing you want to do is go on what could be the week of your life with someone who can’t go with the flow, relax and enjoy an adventure. If you’re booking a two-person cabin with a friend make sure you are on the same page about what type of trip you both want to have.

If you can’t wait to get to The Yacht Week and party all week and your friend is looking for a peaceful, relaxing week of sailing and sightseeing it is not going to work. If your friend wants to do a luxury sailing trip but you want to book an economy sailboat to save money it is not going to work. This seems pretty obvious but I saw both of these scenarios happen and it is a buzz kill for everyone. Make sure you are on the same page with whoever you book The Yacht Week with, wether you are booking a two-person cabin or an entire sailboat.

Im about to book the Greece trip with a friend but now I am really concerned about the bathroom situation… can you maybe tell me a little bit more about that?

The boats have marine toilets; you can use them for #1 and #2, you just can’t flush anything else down them. So that means you have a baggie for toilet paper you throw out once or twice a day. It’s not ideal, but it’s not as bad as you might think, and you get used to it pretty quick. Plus, you’re on land a lot and can use regular toilets pretty much any time you’re not sailing.

1. The French Riviera  

Perhaps the most glamorous seaside destination in Europe, the French Riviera , or Côte d’Azur, draws the sailor and sunseeker alike. Picture-postcard villages and chic beach resorts line the coast from the cosmopolitan glitz of Saint-Tropez and Cannes to the unspoiled beauty of Port-Cros.  

The winter resort city of Nice, with its ample sunshine, white sand beaches, and special events such as the Cannes Film Festival attract a who’s who of international glitterati. West along the coastline, past the jet-set destination of Saint-Tropez, the island of Porquerolles awaits, with a peaceful escape from the bustle of the mainland.  

2. Costa Smeralda, Sardinia, Italy  

Sardinia’s Emerald Coast is a playground for the jet set, and its dramatic, unspoiled coastline and luxury marinas draw yacht folk from all over. The marine grottoes of Cala Gonone and the rock formations of Capo Testa, shaped by centuries of sea winds, are favorite attractions.  

While the quaint towns of Carloforte and Castelsardo provide local color, the exclusive Yacht Club Costa Smeralda offers dining, a clubhouse, and spa services. Sailors can explore the tiny islands of the Maddalena archipelago or the white sandy beaches and rocky cliffs along the Gallura coast. Tranquil sunset viewing turns to fine dining and sizzling nightlife in the exclusive restaurants, clubs, and discos of Porto Cervo and Porto Rotondo.  

3. The Greek Islands

Surrounded by its “wine-dark” seas and thousands of islands, ancient Greece prospered with a maritime culture that became the cradle of Western civilization.  

There is plenty left to explore, from the natural beauty of its uninhabited isles to the beaches and cosmopolitan nightlife that have made islands such as Mykonos into global destinations. Yachters can stop for an archaeological exploration on Rhodes or Delos, a night on the tiles in the tavernas of Athens, to the nightclub scene of Mykonos, Corfu, and Crete, the largest of the Greek islands.  

The adventure starts in the ancient seaport of Piraeus, in southwestern Athens. Zea Marina is one of the finest, full-service marinas in the Mediterranean, offering 670 berths for vessels up to 492 feet.  

4. The Bahamas  

The 700 islands of The Bahamas begin at Bimini, just 45 miles off the coast of Miami, and stretch 500 miles southwest to the islands of Great Inagua and Little Inagua, neighboring the Turks and Caicos Islands.  

The Bahamas were made famous by Ian Fleming (the islands featured in the James Bond spy thrillers Casino Royale , Thunderball , The Spy Who Loved Me , Never Say Never Again , and License to Kill ). But they’ve been a haven for sailors and swashbucklers since the 18th century.  

They’re a paradise below the waterline, too, for sport fishing, snorkeling and scuba diving. Palm-lined beaches, nature preserves, world-class golf courses, and colorful Colonial-style villas welcome seafarers ashore.  

5. The Florida Keys  

The Florida Keys arc southwest from Virginia Key in the Atlantic Ocean (just south of Miami Beach) to Loggerhead Key in Dry Tortugas National Park, a remote seven-island archipelago in the Gulf of Mexico, 70 miles off Key West. The islands are easy to navigate. Cruising in the Keys can mean a leisurely and scenic sail through the shallow interconnected basins of Florida Bay or a more adventurous trip out on the open waters of the Atlantic.    

But it’s not all plain sailing. Mariners can drop anchor in a coral cove to swim, snorkel, or fish, or drop anchor in Islamorada, the “Sportfishing Capital of the World.”  Of course, a trip to the Keys is not complete without a visit to continental America’s southernmost city, Key West, otherwise known as the Conch Republic—a place described as “close to perfect and far from normal,” where flip-flops are the official footwear and every day the sunset is applauded.  

6. The British Virgin Islands  

One of the world’s great sailing destinations, the BVI comprises four main islands—Tortola, Jost Van Dyke, Anegada, and Virgin Gorda. There are 50 more islands and cays, including Necker Island (Sir Richard Branson’s private paradise) and Salt Island, home of the wreck of the RMS Rhone, and hundreds of tiny palm-lined islets, sandbars, and rocky outcroppings to navigate, bounded by the beautiful Sir Francis Drake Channel, named after the Elizabethan admiral.   

There are countless draws for mariners: calm currents, steady trade winds, and protected bays. It’s a treasure trove, quite literally—some say it’s buried on Norman Island at the southern tip of the archipelago, made famous by Robert Louis Stevenson’s Treasure Island . Today, The Bight, one of the BVI’s most popular (and beautiful) anchorages, enchants seafarers with its sea caves, wreck-diving, and the infamous Willy T floating pirate bar and restaurant.   

7. Bermuda  

Bermuda has been the crossroads of the North Atlantic voyage since the town of St. George’s was settled by shipwrecked sailors in 1609. Between March and November each year, racing yachts from around the globe arrive in the harbors of St. George’s and Hamilton parishes to compete in regattas organized by Bermuda’s many sailing clubs. Thanks to the Gulf Stream, the island’s temperate climate is a year-round draw for leisure travelers, who come to cruise the island’s Great Sound and soak up the sun and local culture. The warm waters are ideal for scuba diving, whether it’s to explore marine wildlife habitats or historic shipwrecks that dot the reefs around Bermuda’s perimeter.

The city is known as "The Land of Urban Outdoors", close to the mighty Lake Erie and the 33,000-acre Cuyahoga Valley National Park , a great spot for hiking.

At Cleveland International Airport, you are greeted by a gigantic Superman figure, created in 1933 by Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster, a pair of inspired local teenagers. It could be a metaphor for the city: an unassuming presence suddenly transforming into a soaring superhero.

Top of the sightseeing charts in Cleveland is The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame . Opened by Chuck Berry and Yoko Ono in 1995, the museum is in a very appropriate location. In 1951 it was here in Cleveland that local radio DJ Alan Freed from first used the term "rock and roll". Before you could say "Good Golly, Miss Molly," it became a global phenomenon.

Housed in a striking double pyramid on the shores of Lake Erie, "The Rock Hall" showcases a quite dizzying selection of memorabilia. It possesses more priceless items of rock 'n' roll history than you can shake an auctioneer's gavel at. There is not enough money in the world to buy this collection.

From the jacket Michael Jackson wore in the "Thriller" video and John Lennon 's handwritten lyrics for "Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds", to The Cloud #2 Blue Angel Guitar that Prince played on "Purple Rain", it's all here. 

What is particularly enticing is the sheer volume of esoterica that the museum has on display: everything from the 1964 contract The Rolling Stones signed to compose a soundtrack for a Rice Krispies ad, and the telegram that the Sex Pistols' manager Malcolm McLaren sent to Sid Vicious's mother in 1979 informing her of his death, to the trophy U2 won at the 1978 Limerick Civic Week Talent Contest.

In another display case are the remnants of a left-handed Fender Stratocaster. It was wrecked on stage by Kurt Cobain with a technician's drill at Inglewood, California in 1993. He performed the stunt to impress fellow guitarist Eddie Van Halen, who was in the audience that night.

Another terrific feature is The Garage, a jam room where you can join a pickup band to play a song from the extensive playlist. It's an extremely high standard. When I was there, a woman in a beanie hat strolled up to the microphone and belted out a superb version of Aretha Franklin's "Chain of Fools".

The Hall of Fame is only rock 'n' roll, but I like it.

Containing the Cleveland Orchestra's famed Severance Hall, the Cleveland Museum of Art, and many other cultural institutions, the University Circle district is widely recognised as having the US's highest concentration of arts venues per square mile.

Another notable institution here is the Cleveland Museum of Natural History . One of the many astonishing artefacts in this eye-catching building, which underwent a $150 million refurbishment in 2022, is the fearsome "Happy", who greets you in the lobby. This 70-foot-long skeleton of a Haplocanthosaurus was discovered in Montana in 1954. Even though it dates from the late Jurassic Period 155 million years ago, it still looks capable of guzzling you as a tasty pre-dinner canape.

Also well worth a visit is the West Side Market, open daily. Constructed in 1912, it is one of the oldest and largest indoor food markets in the US.

Its Insta-worthy stalls reflect the rich immigrant history of the city. For example, the Polish pierogi, a potato, cheese and sauerkraut dumpling, is so popular, it is now a Cleveland speciality. The city hosts an annual "Pierogi Week", and locals say that gym membership always doubles the following week.   

Don't leave West Side Market without sampling the hot dogs at Frank's Bratwursts, made to a secret recipe. For ease of navigation, Ilse, the scion of the fourth-generation Austrian family who run the booth, wears a turquoise basketball vest with "Wurst" emblazoned across the back.

Another very pleasant experience is wandering around Cleveland's vibrant downtown, home to "Playhouse Square," the largest theatre district in the US outside New York City .

The Rotunda at Heinen's, a historic Downtown Cleveland grocery store, is particularly arresting. This aesthetically satisfying construction was built in 1908 for the Cleveland Trust Company, the bank that guarded the wealth of the Carnegies and Rockefellers.

Now a National Historic Landmark, the building boasts a 85-foot-high rotunda crowned with a Tiffany-style stained glass dome. The interior is encircled by a striking 13-panel mural depicting The Settling of Ohio. The artist, Francis David Millet, had quite a remarkable life. After serving as an assistant surgeon to his father in the Civil War, aged just 15, he became a decorated war correspondent in the Russo-Turkish War.

Once home again, he developed a career as a well-regarded artist. With his earnings from the Cleveland Trust Company mural, he bought a ticket on the Titanic, where he was last seen helping women and children into lifeboats before his death.

It's a life that his close friend Mark Twain could have turned into a novel.

Where to stay

One of the world's first indoor shopping malls is home to the Hyatt Regency at The Arcade hotel

The Hyatt Regency at The Arcade is a compelling slice of Cleveland culture. The hotel sits within the dramatic gallery of The Arcade, one of the world's first indoor shopping malls when it was built in 1890.

Its construction was funded by local-born millionaire John D. Rockefeller, the founder of Standard Oil. It cost $875,000. If you wanted to build The Arcade today, you would have to add several zeros to that figure. 

Rockefeller based the design of the five-storey edifice on the world-renowned Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II in Milan, aiming to show that Cleveland could hold its own with other world-class cultural centres. 

The top-floor gallery is ringed by a pride of fearsome lion gargoyles, perhaps snarling at anyone with the temerity to suggest that Cleveland is no match for Milan.  

The hotel certainly has an innate sense of theatre and carries itself with grace and grandeur. Downtown hotels start at around $150 per night. 

Where to eat and drink

One of the most celebrated restaurants in Cleveland is Amba at 1430 West 28th Street. It boasts elegant dark interiors and grew out of a pop-up restaurant started during the pandemic. The menu, crafted by the acclaimed chef Douglas Katz, features ingenious plates infused with the multi-layered flavours of Indian cooking. 

You might at first be put off by the name of one of the mains, "Spicy Sloppy Joe Keema," but don't be. The venison and goat curry, mingled with tomatoes, serrano chilli and red onions, is an inspired melange of the best of American and Indian cuisine.

Also worthy of a pit-stop is Larder Delicatessen and Bakery at 1455 West 29th Street. 

A tremendously atmospheric restaurant, it was built in an old fire station that was decommissioned in 1976. It still has a firefighters' pole, the original wooden ceiling and signs on the wall warning: "Do not obstruct – stretcher." It even has an old yellow hi-vis jacket and red firefighter's helmet hanging by the counter.

To underline its culinary heritage, Larder also displays a picture of the fire crew winning the National Chili Cook Off Competition in the early 1970s.

The owner, Jeremy Umansky, regularly forages for ingredients. His motto is, "if we can't make it, we won't serve it," and he produces home-made deli sandwiches that are worth crossing several continents for.

The verdict

At first glance, Cleveland may feel off the beaten track for the average British or Irish traveller, but this need not be the case. If you fly with Aer Lingus , you can take advantage of an excellent scheme, allowing you to "pre-clear" US Immigration. It ultimately means a clear walk through Cleveland Airport straight to the city, without enduring the infamous US security queues.

Once you've arrived, Cleveland clearly offers many elements that you might not have expected from a major post-industrial US city. Largely eschewing big chains, it has many unanticipated, alternative features.

The Hingetown district, for instance, has an attractively buzzy, progressive vibe. It is the hub of the city's thriving LGBT+ community. In case you didn't realise this, the crosswalks in the area are painted in the colours of the rainbow flag.   

Many of Cleveland's shops also provide an appealingly quirky ambience, very far removed from the giant corporate retail names that dominate most of the US. For instance, Coco's in the Colonial Arcade in Downtown Cleveland is an ingenious store. The largest selfie museum in the US – how many others are there? – it has 25,000 square feet of backdrops and over 70 photo-opportunity spots beside antiques, relics and upcycled junk. The store's entrance is a pair of heavy wooden cupboard doors, paying homage to the gateway to Narnia in "The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe".

It's an apt image for the city. Come on in; you'll be very pleasantly surprised by what awaits you beyond the doors to Cleveland.

Divers Seek Mike Lynch and Morgan Stanley Chief After Yacht Sinks

PALERMO, Sicily (Reuters) -Divers scoured the wreck of a luxury yacht off Sicily's coast on Tuesday to find six missing people, including British tech entrepreneur Mike Lynch and a Morgan Stanley executive, following an intense storm that sank the vessel on Monday.

The British-flagged Bayesian, a 56-metre-long (184-ft) superyacht, was carrying 22 people and anchored off the port of Porticello when it was hit by the fierce, pre-dawn storm.

Fifteen people escaped before it capsized and the body of one person who died was swiftly recovered. That left six passengers unaccounted for - Lynch and his 18-year-old daughter, Morgan Stanley International chairman Jonathan Bloomer, Clifford Chance lawyer Chris Morvillo, and their two wives.

"The fear is that the bodies got trapped inside the vessel," which was lying 49 metres (160 feet) deep, Salvatore Cocina, head of civil protection in Sicily, told Reuters. This meant time beneath the waves was a limiting factor for the divers.

"The biggest difficulty we have is due to the depth, which does not allow long times of intervention," fire department diver Marco Tilotta told reporters. "We plan ... to search centimetre by centimetre." 

Tilotta said the vessel appeared to be intact and was lying on its right side. Divers had not ascertained whether the 72-metre-long mast had snapped somewhere along its length.

Lynch, 59, is one of the UK's best-known tech entrepreneurs. He built the country's largest software firm, Autonomy, from his ground-breaking research at Cambridge University and became known as Britain's Bill Gates. 

He sold the firm to HP for $11 billion in 2011, after which the deal spectacularly unravelled with the U.S. tech giant accusing him of fraud, resulting in a lengthy trial. Lynch was eventually acquitted by a jury in San Francisco in June.

Morvillo represented Lynch in the case, while Bloomer had appeared as a character witness on his behalf.

In an apparent extraordinary coincidence, Stephen Chamberlain, Mike Lynch's co-defendant in the trial, died after a road accident in Britain over the weekend, his lawyer said on Monday.

The Bayesian was owned by Lynch's wife, who survived the disaster, and other guests on the yacht included Lynch's colleagues. The only body so far retrieved was that of the onboard chef Ricardo Thomas, an Antiguan citizen.  

The British government's Marine Accident Investigation Branch said it sent four of its inspectors to Sicily to conduct a "preliminary assessment." 

'DIDN'T SEE IT COMING'

One expert at the scene of the disaster who declined to be named said an early focus of the official investigation would be whether the yacht's crew had closed access hatches into the vessel before the storm struck.

Investigators would look at whether appropriate measures had been taken, given the forecasts for bad weather overnight.

"We didn't see it coming," the captain of the yacht, James Catfield, said of the storm, according to la Repubblica news website on Monday.

Storms and heavy rains have ravaged Italy in recent days, after weeks of scorching heat warmed the sea temperature to record highs, raising the risk of extreme weather conditions, experts said.

"The sea surface temperature around Sicily was around 30 degrees Celsius (86 Fahrenheit), which is almost 3 degrees more than normal," said meteorologist Luca Mercalli.

"We can't say that this is all due to global warming but we can say that it has an amplifying effect," he told Reuters.

The accident appears to have been caused by a major storm and a resulting tornado-like water column that ensnared and damaged the yacht. Among the other six people still missing are Lynch’s 18 year-old daughter and Morgan Stanley International chairman Jonathan Bloomer. The voyage was to celebrate Lynch being acquitted of criminal charges in the U.S. and several members of his legal team were also on board. (The ship was registered to Lynch’s wife, one of the survivors.) By a terrible coincidence, the other person acquitted in Lynch’s trial — Autonomy’s finance head Stephen Chamberlain — had died just the week before when he was hit by a car while out jogging. Mike Lynch, the investor and high-profile founder of U.K. tech firm Autonomy, has been declared missing at sea after the yacht he was on, the Bayesian , capsized in a storm off the coast of Sicily early Monday morning.

TechCrunch confirmed with a source close to the rescue operation that Lynch is one of six people missing from the boat. Lynch’s wife, Angela Bacares, is one of the 15 who have been rescued. One body has been found.

The news is a dramatic, tragic development for one of the more colorful, and sometimes controversial, figures in technology out of the U.K.

Lynch’s enterprise technology firm Autonomy was acquired in 2011 by HP for $11 billion — a major milestone for U.K. technology. But it quickly turned sour, and HP sued Lynch and other executives at the company, arguing it was misled in the transaction.

HP claimed that the deal led to a $4 billion loss — money it then demanded from Lynch and his former CFO. Lynch (pictured above, left) long asserted that he acted in good faith and that he was being made into a scapegoat over a merger gone bad.

That legal drama went on for more than a decade and involved a host of other thorny chapters, including Lynch’s extradition to the U.S. and a lot of very bad publicity for Lynch himself. It also led to a second civil case that took place in 2022 in the U.K., which Lynch lost.

The U.S. criminal case, where Lynch was charged with 15 counts of fraud and conspiracy, went to trial earlier this year in San Francisco. Finally, in June, Lynch was acquitted .

“I am elated with today’s verdict and grateful to the jury for their attention to the facts over the last ten weeks. My deepest thanks go to my legal team for their tireless work on my behalf,” Lynch said at the time. “I am looking forward to returning to the UK and getting back to what I love most: my family and innovating in my field.”

In the interim years, Lynch built up a profile in the U.K. as an investor, most prominently as the founder of Invoke Capital . The VC firm was the biggest investor in cybersecurity firm Darktrace, a connection that was not without its own controversy . It also invested in Sophia Genetics , Featurespace and Luminance, among others. And it appeared that this is the route that he was set to continue.

One dead, six missing as luxury yacht capsizes off Sicily; rescue ops underway

Britons and Americans are among those missing

At least one died, and six others were missing after a super luxury yacht sailboat capsized and sank off Sicily on Monday. According to authorities, the tragedy occurred due to bad weather. Around 15 people were rescued.

The British-flagged, 56-metre Bayesian had a crew of 10 people and 12 passengers. The Italian coast guard said those onboard belonged to British, American and Canadian nationalities.

Those rescued were taken to shore at Porticello and eight of the 15 rescued were hospitalised. 

Luca Cari, a spokesperson for the Italian fire rescue service, said one body was found near the wreck, but six others were unaccounted for. 

A helicopter and rescue boats from the Coast Guard, carabinieri, fire rescue and civil protection service were at the scene searching for the missing and had located the wreck at a depth of 50 meters.

The boat capsized around 5 am off the port of Porticello.

Deep-water divers were also involved in the search operation. They will be trying to enter the hull and search, said the Coast Guard.

Reportedly, through Sunday night and Monday morning, Sicily witnessed intense storms. The western half of the Mediterranean has seen frequent, severe storms since last week.

The yacht, built in 2008, was available for private charter. The yacht’s registered owner was a company based in the Isle of Man called Revtom Ltd, and Camper and Nicholsons International managed it. 

The UK's Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office said they are in contact with the Sicilian authorities. "We stand ready to provide consular support to British nationals affected," it added.
