Tax for Yacht Charters in the Bahamas

What is the cost of tax for yacht charters in the Bahamas? From the 1st of July 2022, a new 10% VAT rate will be levied on the total charter fee, and is applicable to all yachts cruising in Bahamian waters. The new 10% levy does not replace the current 4% cruising fee which remains payable to the Port Department. 

All yachts wishing to cruise within the archipelago must now register for VAT in the Bahamas and receive a Bahamian TIN number.

Foreign-Flagged Yachts in US Waters

There are strict and complicated rules governing commercial yacht charters (non-private) cruising US waters, which in general means that only US-flagged yachts or US built yachts with a coastwise endorsement can conduct yacht charters in the US. Furthermore, yachts that are available for charter are considered to be "engaging in a trade" and thus ineligible for a US cruising licence. Most luxury charter yachts are also not US duty paid.

As the majority of the charter fleet are foreign-flagged yachts, Bahamas yacht charters will likely begin outside of the US, usually in the Bahamian capital of Nassau where there is a large busy international airport.

That said, it is possible to pick-up charter guests in the US so long as the yacht's next port of call is outside of US waters. This can be a good option for those wishing to meet the boat in Florida and cruise down to the Bahamas from here.

Where Should I Begin My Yacht Charter in the Bahamas?

The vast majority of yacht charters in the Bahamas embark and disembark in the country's picturesque capital  Nassau , which is home to its best-known international ports, dotted with top-rung marinas all along its azure waters. The city is justly renowned for its throng of fine-dining options, boutiques, hip eateries, and casinos fringed by towering palm trees. Nassau is also conveniently located for cruising to the Exumas and beyond.

For a real respite from the crowds, it's common for yacht charter guests to embark their vessel at Marsh Harbor on the  Abaco Islands ,  where you can trace the mesmerizing string of sandy cays that can be found here. Its shores, a serene and shimmering topaz, are perfect for dropping anchor and taking the toys for a spin.

When is the Best Time to Visit the Bahamas by Yacht?

One of the great joys of choosing a Bahamas yacht charter is that its balmy climes and shallow waters make it more or less ideal to cruise all-year-round* .  But the Bahamas does have a peak season from mid-December to mid-April. The average temperatures of both Bahamian summers and winters are unsurprisingly tropical: hovering between 24-29 degrees and rarely dipping below this. 

During the summertime (from May until October), guests can expect endless sunshine and some humidity, while from November until April, the Bahamas has a slightly cooler temperature and colder waters.

*However, whilst Bahamian weather is pleasingly warm all-year the islands do fall within the hurricane belt, running from June until the end of November along the US East Coast and the Caribbean. The Western Caribbean's own hurricane season usually starts from mid-September until early November.

Nevertheless, it is worth keeping in mind that hurricanes in the Bahamas are fairly infrequent, and even less so than on the US East Coast.

• Weather conditions and wind strength play a crucial role in anchorage spots in the Bahamas, so plan any overnight anchorages accordingly.
• Some anchorages can be a bit of a challenge to set: it's common for heavy grass to cover a large section of some of the better spots to drop anchor 
• Anchorages that appear to have a sandy bottom can oftentimes be just a thin layer of sand over a coral reef or rock, making it difficult to dig the anchor in. Don't be misled by them!

What is the price of a yacht charter in the Bahamas? 

Chartering a yacht in the Bahamas costs from $4,140 per day in high season and from $24,500 per week. Yachts are generally rented with a captain and the most luxurious vessels come with a crew. Check the mandatory and included extras with the owner. Some factors that can influence the price are the type of boat, length, age, capacity, season, duration of charter, with or without a skipper, extras, etc. 

Charter a yacht with a skipper 

Do not worry if you are not confident in your navigation skills: you are easily able to embark on a skippered yacht trip in the Bahamas. Your skipper will likely be a local who will get you safely where you want to go and back again. While the sailing conditions in and around the Bahamas are generally mild with steady winds and calm seas, there are moments when storms can blow in, which is where the beauty of having a practised skipper in charge is beneficial. You can head to the cabin to stay dry and cosy while the captain expertly returns you all safely to dry land. 

If you choose to charter a yacht with a crew as well, you are guaranteed a trip of luxury.  A crew will typically consist of a couple of hostesses, a cook, and a couple of deckhands, all of whom will work their hardest to ensure that you have an amazing trip in which you don’t have to worry about anything other than relaxing.

What weather and sailing conditions can you expect when you charter a yacht in the Bahamas? 

The weather in the Bahamas is subject to great seasonal variation. You will typically see the hottest temperatures for your yacht trip in the Bahamas in August when the temperature can get as high as 88°F.  In contrast, January is the coldest month, with temperatures dipping as low as 70°F. 

The wettest month in the Bahamas, which usually sees around 1.9 inches of rain, is October .  On the other hand, if you go in December , which usually sees just 0.4 inches, you are guaranteed plenty of sun.  November is the windiest month, with wind speeds getting as high as 14.9 mph.  September is usually the calmest month for your Bahamas yacht trip, with wind speeds reaching just 11.8 mph.

When is the best time to charter a yacht in the Bahamas? 

Although you can sail in the Bahamas throughout the year, we recommend that you book your Bahamas yacht charter for some time between December and April.  During this period, the weather is warm and it falls outside of the hurricane season, which runs from June until November.  This guarantees that you will encounter mostly calm waters, perfect for setting sail.  If you want to avoid the crowds, we recommend that you go towards the end of this period, from March to April, as during these months, there will also be lower prices and more boat availability. 

What can I do with a yacht charter in the Bahamas? 

Schooner Cays are 100% on our list. Explore this gorgeous sand bank and clear water area or alternatively, organise a private helicopter or jet experience and view this spectacular natural beauty from above.  

The southeast of the Bahamas is fairly empty in comparison to other island zones, so if you are looking to cruise the crystal seas on a tranquil and exclusive yacht charter, this can be done best here. 

On the other hand, if you are looking to stay close to civilisation, Great Exuma has touristic beaches and locations with all sorts of wildlife such as swimming pigs (yes, really!!), iguanas and other fascinating species.  

Nassau the capital of the island chain, offers wonderful shopping opportunities, crisp white sandy beaches and stunning diving locations offshore where you can marvel at coral reefs, marine life and the beauty of the aquamarine sea. It is probably one of the largest communities in the Bahamas, with most of our yacht rentals based there. Delve into its vibrant culture and ample local delicacies in bars and restaurants waiting to prove how delicious this Caribbean cuisine really is!  

Treasure Cay on Great Abaco Island is a remote and truly breathtaking place where there are hardly any crowds. The turquoise sea and the snow-white sand are truly a pleasure to admire from your yacht rental.  

The Mermaid Reef diving spot near the Harbour View Marina Marsh Harbour is very reputable and a fantastic place for exploring the underwater sea world and delightfully peculiar coral reef. 

At the tip of Great Abaco, Eastern Shores is picture-perfect with its stunning houses lining the coastline. You can rent these fabulous houses, as well. Many of them have their own exclusive access to the sea through a private pontoon. 

Green Cay Island is only accessible by boat – there is no airport – so travelling to the island on your rental yacht is a great way to explore the area and enjoy the sight of green turtles getting on with their lives and ignoring the intrusion of people into their domain.  

Paradise Cove is a little slice of heaven on earth, close to the stunning Deadman's Reef which is best seen from a boat. Make sure your camera is waterproof: you will not want to lose these photos!  

Then move around the island to beautiful Port Lucaya, where you can explore the market and admire Bahaman life at its leisurely best. 

The Bahamas have a treat in store for you with its spectacular cuisine and cooling cocktails full of fruity flavour! The Bahama Mama is our favourite cocktail with an overwhelmingly good combination of rum, coconut rum, lime juice, pineapple, orange and grenadine!  

The cuisine on these paradisiac islands is uplifting and spicy with seafood playing a special part and lemon, pepper, garlic and curry doing their important bit, too. 

Lobster, stews and grilled fish are all local delicacies served here and “the conch” is a mollusc dish which can be cooked in various ways.

Once you confirm your reservation, your broker will process your payment.

• If you are booking for a single day and your reservation is confirmed more than 7 days in advance, a deposit of either $1,000 USD or 50% of the total cost of the reservation (whichever is greater) is processed immediately in order to hold the yacht. Once your embarkation date is 7 days away, the remainder of the amount due is processed.
• If you are booking for a single day and your reservation is made 7 days or less in advance, the total price of your reservation is processed immediately.
• If you are booking for a multi-day charter and your reservation is confirmed more than 30 days in advance, a deposit of 50% of the cost of the yacht is processed immediately in order to hold the yacht. Once your embarkation date is 30 days away, the other 50% is collected for the price of the yacht, plus the APA, plus the taxes due.

Terms of refunds are dictated by the Charter Agreement. Generally, once a payment is collected, it is non-refundable. In certain circumstances, as dictated by the Charter Agreement, credits can be provided so you will be able to enjoy your yacht charter at a future date that is convenient for you.
