The 42m Songbird of the Sea

The spirit of sailing is adventure. it’s fair winds rippling across thick canvas sails, the sun on your face, calm seas, and a convivial setting with family and friends. it’s about circumnavigation, remote locations, and adrenaline-fueled thrills. but it’s not about risk – not ever..

Not many sailing yachts fall into the category of “world’s safest” – yet Melody does. A true passion project that raises the bar on both quality and functionality. Designed and engineered by Olivier van Meer and built by Ridas Yacht, the 41.54-metre sailing yacht is a true feat of engineering that is just as comfortable in 0 degrees as she is in 40-degree temperatures. Each part and component has been handpicked and is nothing short of premium.

Her set-up with a hydraulic centreboard and twin, independent masts and winches ensures ease of sailing, even during long, daring excursions. She can be managed by a small crew and with a shallow 2.7-metre draft is just as able inland as she is out at sea. Thanks to an ingenious tender garage in her transom, with a refuelling station and storage for a 4.5-metre Williams diesel tender, owner and guests’ explorations are unrestricted.

With 145 GT of interior volume and four spacious staterooms, Melody can easily accommodate eight guests. She has a large dining area and ambient saloon, yet she best lends herself to an alfresco lifestyle with large expansive deck spaces, a Jacuzzi with panoramic views and a number of casual outdoor conversational areas. She’s state-of-the-art and equipped with infotainment and audio-visual units, supplied by Bose.

Built in accordance with Lloyd’s classification and a finalist for the BOAT International’s Superyacht Award, you’ll be hard-pressed to find such an able and robust sailing yacht as well-built as Melody. She also represents a rare opportunity to buy a brand-new sailing yacht, bypassing long lead times.

Started building in 1928 and finished in 1930.   Garland Rotch (designer) was largely inspired by the famous Bluenose schooners.   Originally commissioned by Templeton Crooker, a Yale educated San Francisco banker.   Zaca went around the world twice on scientific expeditions due to the owners interest in Marine Biology.  Crooker then joined the war effort and sold Zaca to the U.S. Navy for $40,000.   Zaca was then painted requisition gray-blue, fitted with 20mm guns and a crew of 35 sailors.

In 1945 Errol Flynn discovered her, and bought her in 1946.   He invested $80,000 towards her restoration:  new masts, repainting etc.   In 1952 Flynn died while trying to sell Zaca to pay off his debts … In 1988 Zaca ended up sinking in the port of Beaulieu.

1991 Roberto Memmo bought the wreck, refloated her and she was restored in IMS shipyard in Saint-Mandrier-sur-Mer, near Toulon.   Officially rechristened by Memmo on 22nd September 1994.

The current Atlantic is the replica of legendary Atlantic which was commissioned by New York Yacht Club member Wilson Marshall, Atlantic and which was launched in 1903.

After owning, restoring, rebuilding or recreating a number of famous yachts such as Thendara, Aile Blanche, Borkumriff, Zaca a te Moana and most recently the Herreshoff racing schooner Eleonora, Dutch yachtsman Ed Kastelein planned his ultimate masterpiece: the recreation of the 3-mast schooner Atlantic.

Today, the new ATLANTIC yacht carries on this extraordinary legacy, being a faithful and authentic reproduction of the original. Modern systems and equipment have been installed to satisfy the current regulations on safety at sea, communications, and various entertainment and comfort aspects of life on board. But looking at photos of the original ATLANTIC, and her current day namesake, it is hard to spot significant differences between the two.

Accommodation

Atlantic can sleep up to a maximum of twelve guests in her luxury six stateroom layout. She also fully accommodates for her crew in separate crew quarters ensuring privacy as well as a relaxed, luxurious experience whenever on board.
