BRAVE CHALLENGER was built in 1958 as a private yacht for Stavros Niarchos who required (and received) what is believed to have been the fastest yacht in the world at that time.

Based on the Vosper Brave Class patrol boats, but not a conversion, the vesssel represents the height of marine technology of the 1950s and 1960s.  She incorporates original design features including hull construction, propulsion systems and propeller design.

A major refit was undertaken in 1980 when an enclosed bridge and cruise diesels were added.  The vessel is still intact but requires extensive refurbishment of mechancial and electrical systems, and her superstructure requires urgent repairs.

BRAVE CHALLENGER was moved to Trafalgar Wharf, Porchester, UK in 2018 and underwent an exterior Stage 1 restoration as part of a planned two stage refit, Unfortunately the second stage (mechanical, electrical and interior) was delayed due to COVID and shipyard management issues. She was therefore re-launched and moved to Ocean Village Marina in Southampton. The project is now waiting for funding and equipment availability to enable Stage 2 to re-start.

A Summary of Motor Yacht BRAVE CHALLENGER

The motor yacht BRAVE CHALLENGER is a 31 m 103 (ft) well proportioned wooden/aluminium frames luxury yacht which was built at Vosper Thornycroft and devised by Peter Du Cane. Accommodating 10 passengers and 6 qualified crew, motor yacht BRAVE CHALLENGER was known by the name Mercury which was her shipyard project name and/or actual name. Finished and launched in 1960 this boat’s internal styling confirms the traditional yacht setting of Prof Pinnau.

The Construction & Yacht Design of Luxury Yacht BRAVE CHALLENGER

Peter Du Cane was the naval architect firm involved in the formal nautical design work for BRAVE CHALLENGER. Her interior design was conceived by Prof Pinnau. Peter Du Cane is also associated with the yacht wider design collaboration for this boat. In 1960 she was actually launched to celebration in Portsmouth and following sea trials and final completion was thereafter passed on to the owner. Vosper Thornycroft completed their new build motor yacht in the United Kingdom. The core hull was constructed with wooden/aluminium frames. The motor yacht superstructure component is fabricated largely from aluminium. With a beam of 7.32 m or 24 feet BRAVE CHALLENGER has reasonable interior. A reasonably shallow draught of 2.23m (7.3ft) determines the amount of worldwide ports she can enter into, contingent on their minimum characteristics. She had refit maintenance and alteration work undertaken in 1989.

Installed with triple ROLLS ROYCE/GM codog main engines, BRAVE CHALLENGER is able to reach a top speed of 60 knots. Connected to her Rolls Royce/GM engine(s) are 3sc. She also has an efficient range of 2000 miles whilst underway at her cruise speed of 44 knots. Her total HP is 13620 HP and her total Kilowatts are 10022.
