Kelt Sailboat - Resizing the Motor Well- Thread starter BayRidgeBill

- Ask All Sailors
BayRidgeBillI have a Kelt 7.6 (27 foot) sailboat that I really like, but I want to replace the 7 Hp Honda outobard that it came with, with a 9 Hp Honda outboard. (This is not just for the greater power, but for the battery-charging and powered start feature that the larger engine has.) My problem is that the "motor well" that the boat came with accomodates the 7 Hp dimensions just fine, but would have to be modified or replaced with one of proper dimentions (larger hole for the engine). Has anyone dealt with this problem before---resizing the motor well in a Kelt to accomodate a slightly larger engine? I hesiate butchering my motor well, if there are any good ideas out there. ![kelt 7.6 sailboat for sale Ross](https://forums.sailboatowners.com/data/avatars/m/39/39072.jpg?1443871909) It will mostly depend on either the size of your bank account or your fiberglass skills. ![kelt 7.6 sailboat for sale sailingdog](https://forums.sailboatowners.com/data/avatars/m/79/79856.jpg?1443871952) There are some concerns with enlarging the motor well, since making it larger will reduce the waterplane and buoyancy of the stern a bit. If you aren't careful, the boat's balance will shift aft, between the reduction in buoyancy and increase in weight, and this will effectively rake the mast, leading to greater weather helm. Also, the motor well's walls may contribute to the boat's structure, so any well you build will have to be as strong as the existing one. is the hole in the bottom large enough for the lower unit of the engine? Do you simply need more room for the power head? Do you need that room on all four sides? Don't do it. Find a motor that fits. Enlarging outboard well my 2c I have to agree with everybody else. Dont do it. Sounds like this joob would cost more than the boat is worth and compromise the sailing characteristics of the boat. One more remark: You said Kelt? Ive been around sailboats along time and I never heard of a Kelt: Are you sure you dont mean Kells? probably gonna be less costly to find a better way to charge your batteries. Pulling the starting rope a couple of times a day shouldn't be too exhausting. ![kelt 7.6 sailboat for sale Jalepeno](https://forums.sailboatowners.com/data/avatars/m/39/39876.jpg?1445815252) The Canadian built "Kelt 7.6" is 7.6 metres (25feet) long. It is a great sailing boat of French design. The outboard motor mounts in a well at the aft end of the cockpit. I have sailed one many times a few years ago and it had a Honda 7.5 with the shifter contols on the front. I would strongly suggest you look for a motor that fits the well. I think a Kelt displaces about 4500lb so you should be able to achive hull speed with about 8hp to 9.9hp (1hp/500lb) outboard with a high thrust propeller. http://sailquest.com/market/models/kelt.htm ![kelt 7.6 sailboat for sale MrBee](https://forums.sailboatowners.com/data/avatars/m/84/84936.jpg?1443871957) I have sailed on the Kelt 9.9 I think it's 9.9. Next larger to the 7.6.. Nice boat to sail. Looks like a fairly wide stern, a slightly heavier engine shouldn't have too great of an effect on balance. If all you need is more room for the power head, (many engines share the same lower unit) I'd say check it out to see how much, if any, of the existing well is structural for the boat,(as opposed to structural for the well itself) then make any mods with that in mind. Depends entirely on your glass skills or pocketbook depth after that Ken. Outboard Ive got a pearson 26w I keep it light. Displaces about 5000lbs. In 08 I replaced a 20 year old Mercury 2 cycle pull start with a new Tohatsu 8hp Tohatsu pull start I found the Tohatsu much more powerful than the Merc. The Tohatsu moves the boat at hull speed around 6kts with less than 1/2 throttle. If I knew this before I bought the motor I would have bought a smaller engine. Todays engines are more powerful. Look around Im sure you can find an engine that will fit and do the job. bffatcat said: Ive got a pearson 26w I keep it light. Displaces about 5000lbs. The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more. Classic hull speed formula: Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio .311 Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL Sail Area / Displacement RatioA measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more. SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3 - SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
- D : Displacement in pounds.
Ballast / Displacement RatioA measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize. Ballast / Displacement * 100 Displacement / Length RatioA measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more. D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³ - D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.
- LWL: Waterline length in feet
Comfort RatioThis ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more. Comfort ratio = D ÷ (.65 x (.7 LWL + .3 LOA) x Beam 1.33 ) - D: Displacement of the boat in pounds
- LOA: Length overall in feet
