The Victoria One Design is a simple, affordable, ARF sailboat manufactured by the Thunder Tiger Model Company, and distributed world wide. The kit’s low cost (about $150 for the kit, perhaps $400 – $500 nicely outfitted), ease of assembly, and good sailing characteristics make it a great first yacht, while remaining fun to sail and race for old hands as well. The emphasis of the Victoria is on SIMPLICITY and FUN, and to these ends check out the Victoria Resource Center for the latest building, tuning, and sailing tips, along with other interesting and useful information about the boat.

The boat itself is made of heavy duty PVC-type plastic, and is quite durable, capable of surviving virtually any mishap or collision. The kit also includes high quality aluminum spars, sails, and all necessary fittings. All you need to do is add a two-channel radio and you’re ready to sail. Construction is generally a weekend project. The ease of assembly also makes the Victoria a great “club” boat, as new skippers can buy a boat and join the racing with a minimum of trouble and expense.

SFMYC

San Francisco Model Yacht Club

Victoria Class

victoria class sailboat

For almost a decade, SFMYC has included the smallest and least expensive Victoria One Design class in its fleet of radio-controlled model yachts.  Not only is it an actively-raced boat in many communities around the world, sanctioned by the American Model Yachting Association, it is a well-balanced, sweet-sailing model yacht. The boat’s low cost and good sailing characteristics make it a great first yacht, while remaining fun to sail and race for old hands as well. It is easy to transport, fully rigged, in the smallest of cars. Some of the Victorias sailed at SFMYC are in a so-called “Silver” fleet, utilizing the stock spars and sails that come with the kit.  Under AMYA class rules, a “Gold” fleet is also permitted; they use custom-made carbon-fiber spars and aftermarket paneled sails. That adds to the cost of the boat; most of our members now sail them.  There are more than 20 Victoria skippers in the Club, many of whom have built their own boats. Used Victorias come up for sale from time to time.

We also have four Club-owned Victorias which are kept handy in the Boathouse, making it possible for members, new members, and prospective members to sail a Victoria without cost. To reserve a Club boat, or to get hints about building your own (do NOT follow the kit’s instructions!), post a comment on the fleet’s email bulletin board.

To ask a question about the Victoria fleet, to inquire about boats for sale (or to sell one yourself) or to organize an impromptu weekend sail, use the Victoria fleet’s email bulletin board:  [email protected]

Victoria Sailing Yacht by Thunder Tiger By James Anderson, Okanagan Model Sailboat Association

victoria class sailboat

The Victoria is large enough to handle even strong winds but yet small enough to fit in any vehicle. The kit is very affordable and can be assembled in a couple of weekends with a minimum of tools.

The Victoria has been adopted as a valid racing class by the American Model Yachting Association and the Canadian Radio Yachting Association and can be easily customized to greatly improve the sailing characteristics.

The Victoria hull is made of pre-molded PVC, is just under 32 inches in length, is over 4 foot tall and weighs a little over 4 1/2 pounds.

For recreational use, an inexpensive 2 channel radio control package designed for surface use is all that is required to complete your Victoria sailing yacht.

For the advanced sailor, the 2.4gHz Spektrum radio package would be a welcome addition to the Victoria kit.

For added excitement, the Victoria can be upgraded to a racing sailboat with the addition of more efficient sails and a stronger servo to control the sail position. Many custom manufacturers supply racing sails for the Victoria and the most popular sail servos are the Futaba S3802 or the Hitec HS-645MG .

Victoria 18

Victoria 18 is a 18 ′ 6 ″ / 5.6 m monohull sailboat designed by G. William McVay and built by Victoria Yachts Co. between 1977 and 1983.

Drawing of Victoria 18

Rig and Sails

Auxilary power, accomodations, calculations.

The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.

Classic hull speed formula:

Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL

Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio .311 Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL

Sail Area / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.

SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3

  • SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
  • D : Displacement in pounds.

Ballast / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.

Ballast / Displacement * 100

Displacement / Length Ratio

A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.

D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.
  • LWL: Waterline length in feet

Comfort Ratio

This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.

Comfort ratio = D ÷ (.65 x (.7 LWL + .3 LOA) x Beam 1.33 )

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds
  • LOA: Length overall in feet
  • Beam: Width of boat at the widest point in feet

Capsize Screening Formula

This formula attempts to indicate whether a given boat might be too wide and light to readily right itself after being overturned in extreme conditions. Read more.

CSV = Beam ÷ ³√(D / 64)

Derived from the earlier MINUET. Two versions were built; A sloop and a very limited edition cutter with a bowsprit. The number built listed is only a rough approximation. Just before the factory closed, a VICTORIA 17 was introduced, a shortened version of the 18 with an outboard rudder. It is thought that they exist in very small numbers.

Victoria Yachts was a company founded by the designers son, Bill McVay. The location was: 203 Benson Junction Road DeBarry, Florida 32713 USA

The Unique Burial of a Child of Early Scythian Time at the Cemetery of Saryg-Bulun (Tuva)

<< Previous page

Pages:  379-406

In 1988, the Tuvan Archaeological Expedition (led by M. E. Kilunovskaya and V. A. Semenov) discovered a unique burial of the early Iron Age at Saryg-Bulun in Central Tuva. There are two burial mounds of the Aldy-Bel culture dated by 7th century BC. Within the barrows, which adjoined one another, forming a figure-of-eight, there were discovered 7 burials, from which a representative collection of artifacts was recovered. Burial 5 was the most unique, it was found in a coffin made of a larch trunk, with a tightly closed lid. Due to the preservative properties of larch and lack of air access, the coffin contained a well-preserved mummy of a child with an accompanying set of grave goods. The interred individual retained the skin on his face and had a leather headdress painted with red pigment and a coat, sewn from jerboa fur. The coat was belted with a leather belt with bronze ornaments and buckles. Besides that, a leather quiver with arrows with the shafts decorated with painted ornaments, fully preserved battle pick and a bow were buried in the coffin. Unexpectedly, the full-genomic analysis, showed that the individual was female. This fact opens a new aspect in the study of the social history of the Scythian society and perhaps brings us back to the myth of the Amazons, discussed by Herodotus. Of course, this discovery is unique in its preservation for the Scythian culture of Tuva and requires careful study and conservation.

Keywords: Tuva, Early Iron Age, early Scythian period, Aldy-Bel culture, barrow, burial in the coffin, mummy, full genome sequencing, aDNA
