Record Sale: Lady Moura, the World’s First Superyacht, Sells for $125M
The superyacht industry emerged around three decades ago, when German ship-building company Blohm+Voss introduced the impressive 105-meter motor yacht, Lady Moura , to the public. Like a mansion at sea, this vessel, with its Luigi Sturchio-designed interiors and innovative seven-deck construction, shattered previous notions of what a yacht could be through its unmatched elegance and extraordinary scale. The ship was built to house dignitaries and statesmen, its high-end amenities and private spaces making it a perfect getaway for the world’s elite. A year and a half ago, however, Lady Moura’s owner placed the superyacht on the market, and in a swift 554-day turnaround, it sold in-house for a record 125 million dollars: the largest superyacht sale by a broker since 2019.
Lady Moura’s new captain is now in command of a piece of boating history. In 1990, it became one of the first yachts to feature a beach club area and a hydraulic fold-out balcony, innovations that would later become standard fare for the industry. The vessel’s wide 18.5-meter beam allowed for spacious interiors, much larger than preceding models of the time, and its splendorous family residence area has inspired shipbuilders to up their game and produce even more lavish maritime living quarters. Despite its exquisite reputation, many of the ship’s innermost rooms are a mystery, their designs and layout having never been fully disclosed to the general public. This sense of mystery only makes the vessel more intriguing; when it appeared on the market last year, the yachting world went wild with speculation about who the next lucky owner would be.
In addition to its sporty exteriors and sleek architecture, the yacht presents an array of high-end features that have stood the test of time. One doesn’t have to search high and low to see why Lady Moura turned the tides of the yachting lifestyle decades ago.

This most recent sale, engineered by yachting company Camper & Nicholsons , represents just one chapter in the storied life of this iconic vessel, which continues to stun with its sophistication and timeless flair. The ship’s staggering price tag only underscores its desirability—maturity and majesty wrapped into one magnificent vessel.
A Closer Look at the $210 Million Superyacht Lady Moura
There are yachts, luxury yachts, and then there are superyachts like the Lady Moura. She’s in the top 25 largest private yachts in the world, though she was once in the top ten. This beautiful (partially) gold plated ship is a wonder of the oceans to be sure. Her recognizable profile and distinctive beauty give her a special place in the hearts of aspiring billionaires and superyacht lovers.
The Man With the Golden Yacht
Her owner, Dr. Nasser Ibrahim Al-Rashid, is a Saudi Arabian business mogul, the chairman and founder of Rashid Engineering in Riyadh. Interestingly, his family name indicates that he may be descended from the original Rashid clan who founded Riyadh. They were later overtaken by Ibn Saud who took the city in 1902 and became king of Saudi Arabia when it was declared a nation in 1932. Despite this historical difference, he is also known as an advisor to the royal family. The highly esteemed position shows that he possesses wisdom beyond that of his single area of business acumen, or at least excellent connections. At eighty year old, he has certainly had plenty of time to gain experience. Hopefully, at his age, he’s spending more time aboard the Lady Moura these days relaxing. The company Al-Rashid created is a consulting and engineering firm. For those who aren’t aware, middle eastern engineers have been making incredible leaps in engineering for centuries. However, since that area of the world is better known for its oil, it may not surprise you to discover that Nasser earned his Bachelors, Masters, and Ph.D. in Civil Engineering at the University of Texas Austin.
The Lady’s Stats
Lady Moura was the most expensive yacht in the world when she was launched. With her own private nightclub and enough gold to sink a lesser ship, it’s no surprise she cost so much to build. Moreover, she’s been refitted at least twice that we know of. The sheer decadent and extravagant details of Lady Moura are beyond what most people will ever even see, let alone experience in their lives.

Only the Finest for The Lady
In addition to being one of the best in her class, the Lady Moura is known internationally for her golden coat of arms and name on a pristine white background. The automated hydraulic gates and locks plus the mechanical modernization completed in 2007 help to keep her at the top of her game. Looking at the Lady , it’s hard to imagine that she will be 30 next year. We know it’s indelicate to discuss a lady’s age, but that’s offset when we’re talking about how incredible she looks.
Though the details of the layout are kept a closed secret, we do know a bit about her. The Lady Moura has the most exceptional facilities you could wish for. In addition to the nightclub we mentioned before, she has a small spa for on-site treatments and relaxation for guests. There are a fully equipped casino, and fifteen lavishly appointed guest cabins. The master suite even has separate apartments inside for family. Should you be so fortunate as to receive an invitation to visit, you’ll want for nothing. With a staff to guest ratio of more than two to one, you can be sure that you’ll be served, escorted and otherwise pampered in any way you and your host see fit.
While many yachts and cruise liners have pools, they are usually outside in the sun. The Lady has an indoor swimming pool. Furthermore, she has a retractable roof in at least one area, so it’s possible she has the only yacht-board indoor-outdoor pool in the world .
Perhaps the most surprising and practical inclusion is the fully equipped operating room. Even a multi-billionaire can’t take it with them if they die at sea, far from any hospital. Having a helicopter around to fly you to safety and assistance is one thing. Luckily, if you’re an extremely wealthy aging mega yacht owner, you can probably afford whatever you need, including your surgeon. Dancing the night away in your private club on the sea, and relaxing in your spa by day is one way to stay healthy, but it never hurts to be extra certain. Provided he is on the Lady Moura, Al-Rashid will probably enjoy a very long life in the Mediterranean sun.
- Lady Moura has her own fan page. People in the Mediterranean and beyond have fallen in love with this untouchable lady, often called, “Jewel of the Sea.” She has over 120,000 hits on Google and her own Wikipedia page as well.
- In 2008 Al-Rashid also purchased a helicopter for her. The chopper, a Sikorsky S76C+, is worth an additional $13 million. Now the helipad has its own dedicated craft.
- An average American makes about $47,060 per year. At that rate, you would have to work more than 4,462 years to afford the Lady Moura without the helicopter, staff, fuel, or upgrades.
Final Thoughts
If we were going to work forty centuries to buy one lavish item, the Lady Moura would undoubtedly be on our short list of choices. Of course, if we lived that long, we hope that we’d have mastered enough sills to make a better wage and buy her sooner than that. Of course, she’s not for sale, and you can’t even charter her or take a tour for that matter. If you happen to live in Palma de Mallorca, you’ll probably catch a few lust-filled glances at her over time. Step Inside the Lady Moura Yacht
Lady Moura has had just one owner; now, for the first time in her 30-year history, she's up for sale.

Towards the end of the 20 th century, the Lady Moura yacht was one of the finest superyachts that could be found anywhere in the world. First delivered in 1990 by German shipbuilders Blohm + Voss, at the time she was one of the largest and priciest yachts the industry had ever seen. While the yachting world has changed considerably during the last 34 years, and yes Lady Moura has been superseded by several newer and larger ships, to some, she was the original superyacht.
Stretching 344 feet in length, when she was originally built, Lady Moura was the 9 th largest yacht in the world. While she has certainly dropped positions in the list since then, her 6,500GT volume remains an impressive figure in the modern market. Despite primarily operating as a stationary vessel, she’s actually capable of covering over 8,000 nautical miles at a cruising speed of 17 knots (however this sizable ship actually maxes out at 20 knots).
For the majority of her life, Lady Moura had a single owner, Saudi businessman Nasser Al-Rashid. However, in 2021 she was purchased by a new owner, Mexican billionaire Ricardo Salinas Pliego.

As a yacht designed for prolonged onboard family living rather than just short-term cruising, Lady Moura’s interiors are impressively comfortable and luxurious – even by superyacht standards. Despite receiving a significant refit in 2017, Lady Moura has retained much of her original interior, which acts as a testament to the skill of her designer, Italian-born Luigi Sturchio, as well as the impeccable level of care from the crew in her 30-year lifetime.

The Rise of the Superyacht Marina
The ship offers 27,986 sq ft of private guest space, with the entirety of one of its seven decks dedicated exclusively to family living. The vessel can accommodate up to 26 guests across 13 cabins, subject to PYC compliance, with additional space for 65 crew members, making for a desirable guest to staff ratio. Lady Moura’s interior is lavish: think opulent marble details, plush soft furnishings and rich mahogany furniture in the lounges and bedrooms, with wicker and nautical stripes in the chic beach club.
As you would expect on a luxury yacht of this magnitude, the owner’s cabin onboard the Lady Maura is vast – in fact, the full-beam VIP cabin outsizes the owner’s accommodation in many other ships. Occupying the entire aft half of one deck, the owner’s suite includes the main sleeping cabin that leads directly onto a private terrace, a secondary cabin, a dressing room and a lobby area.
In addition to her extensive accommodations, the Lady Moura yacht is awash with recreational space. On her top deck, you will find an indoor swimming pool complete with a retractable roof, a spa with a sauna and hot tub, and full gym facilities.

Thanks to the ship’s thoughtful design, the beach club (which was one of the first seen onboard a superyacht) can theoretically be enjoyed open air at all times – even when cruising – making it the height of functionality. Off the beach club are not one but two balconies with boarding platforms, both offering access to the ocean.

Lady Moura also offers a full-size helipad, which in recent years has received a significant upgrade. Her original blue concrete was replaced with a neutral-colored blue pad for a touch of modernization, which makes it one of the few aesthetic updates that Lady Moura has had in her lifetime. More amenities are discreetly stowed in a mid-level boat garage, including a Boston Whaler, waterski boat and landing craft, all of which are accessed by sleek, hydraulically operated doors.
As a family vessel, children’s entertainment is catered for onboard. Aside from the expansive beach club, Lady Moura also boasts a kid’s room on her bridge deck, which doubles up as a video game zone.
Lady Moura is also the perfect vessel for hosting, with a formal dining room providing space for up to 24 guests and multiple lounges, as well as a movie theatre and DJ booth/dance floor. In the interest of guest safety, there is also a fully equipped medical center onboard.

The truth is Lady Moura isn’t much of an explorer . This isn’t to say she can’t, however – in fact, there is room for up to three months’ worth of provisions on board and she can cruise for up to 12,000 nautical miles without needing to refuel. But to date, her owner hasn’t tested her capacities with any conviction, with her furthest voyage being a trip to the Caribbean in the nineties.
Speaking to BOAT International in mid-2020, Lady Moura’s captain Matthias Bosse revealed that the ship only has around 13,500 traveling hours, which is a remarkably low number for a yacht of her age. Instead of traveling the four corners of the world, the superyacht is usually used as a residential dwelling in the south of France and has never been available for charter.
However, with the spectacular vessel now on the market for the first time, the future may be more adventurous for Lady Moura – her captain was keen to share that apart from the Arctic zones (which require a stronger steel hull), she can navigate virtually any of the world’s vast oceans.

Steve Jobs’ visionary superyacht collided with a Mexican billionaire’s boat
Steve Jobs’ $130 million former yacht, Venus, was accidentally involved in a billionaire boat collision off the coast of Italy. The Apple cofounder, a legendary tech inventor and CEO, passed away in 2011 at the age of 56.
The 256-foot-long vessel, now owned by Jobs’ widow, businesswoman Laurene Powell Jobs, was anchored off the coast of Naples when a change in the wind caused it to drift, Business Insider reported , citing a spokesperson from Powell Jobs’ Emerson Collective.
Venus collided with another superyacht, Lady Moura , owned by the third-richest man in Mexico, Ricardo Salinas Pliego . Only crew members were aboard the Venus , according to the spokesperson.
In a video posted by Salinas Pliego on social media, those aboard the Lady Moura could be seen shouting to get the attention of the crew aboard Venus, to no avail. In a post on X Wednesday, a clearly irritated Salinas Pliego said in Spanish that Venus left “a big scratch that is going to cost a lot to fix.”
“I’d like to know what the captain and crew were doing that they didn’t notice a yacht as big as mine in front of them,” the cofounder and chairman of conglomerate Grupo Salinas wrote on X.
There was no shortage of idiots in the world, he added.

The multibillionaire, who owns a chain of stores in Latin America called Elektra that offers everything from motorcycles to electronics with financing, joked that his social media followers should buy Apple products from his stores so Powell Jobs could afford to pay for the repairs to his boat.
Jobs’ yacht launched in 2012, just a year after the Apple founder’s death from pancreatic cancer. Jobs collaborated with French designer Philippe Starck over four years to create a ship that matched the minimalist aesthetic of an Apple product. Although he never set foot on deck, the ship ended up being one of Jobs’ final passion projects, according to Vanity Fair .
“It was not a yacht that Steve and I were constructing, we were embarked on a philosophical action, implemented according to a quasi-religious process. We formed a single brain with four lobes,” Starck told Vanity Fair.
The damages to Lady Moura will likely be covered by insurance, which can range from 5% to 6% of the vessel’s total value. Salinas Pliego reportedly bought the superyacht for $125 million in 2022 . The two ship captains apparently met immediately to discuss the “minor repairs needed,” Boat International reported , citing a source close to the matter.
Although bothered by the crash, Salinas Pliego seemed to want to cast off from the subject.
“Oh well, we’re going to continue enjoying our vacation,” he wrote on X.

LADY MOURA yacht interior
The interior of the LADY MOURA yacht was designed by Luigi Sturchio, a renowned Italian designer.
The incredible yacht was designed to be a floating personal residence, with many people spending more time on the boat than off in the last 20 years.
She has accommodation for 27 guests in 13 cabins that comprises a master suite, a VIP suite, and 11 more cabins. There is accommodation for 71 crew members in 36 cabins.
The interior was kept under wraps for 30 years, but with her sale in 2021, the details have finally been revealed.
The interior design reflects the level of opulence reserved for royalty at the time of her launch as a private vessel. Her sheer size allows for a large number of onboard amenities.
The facilities include a helipad and a hospital suite for guests and crew members.
The yacht has a DJ room and a movie theatre for guests to enjoy. There is a beach club for the perfect indoor/outdoor areas, which compliments the generous swimming pool.
The deck areas are plentiful with al fresco dining options and sunbathing areas.
There is a spa, gym, multiple saloons, and a bakery on board. She features several tenders and water toys, including a limousine tender, a waterski boat, and a landing craft.
Luigi Sturchio also designed the exterior of the LADY MOURA yacht. She was built by Blohm + Voss and delivered in 1990, and recently refitted in 2020.
At the time of her launch, she was the most expensive and innovative yacht in the world.
The amazing yacht set a new standard for yacht building 30 years ago. The yacht features a white hull and superstructure made from steel.
The name and the escutcheon are engraved in 24-carat gold onto the yacht’s exterior. The striking yacht is complimented by underwater lights that illuminate her in the dark.

The LADY MOURA yacht has a whopping length of 104m, a beam of 18.5m, and a draft of 5.5m. She can reach a top speed of 22 knots and a cruising speed of 17 knots.
She has a range of 8000 nautical miles and is powered by twin Deutz engines.
She has a displacement of 6439 gross tons. She has at-anchor stabilizers that provide exceptional comfort levels for guests while at the water.
LADY MOURA was built to Lloyd’s Register classification society rules.
Now valued at $125 million, LADY MOURA was rumored to cost more than $200 million to build. The yacht has an annual running cost of $10 to $20 million.

Lady Moura – Superyacht Royalty
Arguably one of the most iconic motor yachts on the water and superyacht royalty, this 105m statement of success was the most expensive superyacht in the world at the time of her launch, and the ninth largest.
Lady Moura was commissioned by an experienced owner who paid meticulous attention to every detail. Now, offered for sale by her original owner and on the market for the first time, Camper & Nicholsons invited us to Monaco to take a tour of this truly standout superyacht.
As her 24-carat-gold-plated name badge suggests, Lady Moura bears only the finest finishes, the most luxurious of lifestyle features, and exudes extravagance.
The vessel, which has served as a private family property, was built by Blohm & Voss to Lloyds Classification and delivered in 1991. This incredible yacht of 6,359GT underwent significant mechanical refits in 2018/19 and also has an advanced remote monitoring system installed, which allows for condition-based maintenance, real0time troubleshooting and support, enabling an extremely low operating expense for a yacht of her stature.
Lady Moura lead the way for many innovative developments in design. Her balconies, two off the beach club and two side boarding platforms, were an engineering first at the time of her launch and transformed the way an owner could access both the vessel and the water. Lady Moura has a phenomenal 8,000nm range, easily surpassing that of many modern superyachts regardless of their size.
Conceived specifically as a haven for the family to spend time together, but also to serve as a platform for select social engagements, Lady Moura dedicates one of her seven decks exclusively to family living. Along with the opulent full beam owner’s suite on this deck, are six cabins exclusively for use by family members, culminating in a total of 2,600sq.m of private chambers. When it comes to superyachts with authentic pedigree, few have as much blue blood as the 344-foot Lady Moura . When she was delivered to her owners in 1990 by German shipyard Blohm+Voss, the levels of design innovation and onboard engineering were unprecedented. Built to be a private residence, the yacht has been cloaked in mystery to the outside world for three decades.

Now that the yacht is for sale for the first time by her original owner, the veil has finally been lifted. Robb Report was one of the first outsiders to tour the yacht recently at a Monaco event hosted by Lady Moura’s broker, Camper & Nicholsons .
“The owner’s intention was to make an impact,” says Captain Matthias Bosse, who first joined the yacht as Staff Captain in 1992. “He wanted to build the biggest yacht, at the best shipyard, with the most advanced technology in the world.”
Bosse adds: “She was built to be a family home, not for cruising.”

A family home indeed. Two fully equipped ICU units and a fulltime onboard doctor are not standard protocol on most superyachts. Neither are two galleys—one for the owner, the other for the crew—with up to six chefs and a separate bakery. And few superyachts that spend the majority of their time running between Monaco and Palma carry a permanent helicopter on board. Conforming to the conventions of the world, however, was never the owner’s priority.
Making statements in design and technology were. Well ahead of her time, Lady Moura has one of the first beach clubs on a superyacht , and an entire owner’s deck. The owners also wanted a clean exterior look, so all doors, flaps, roofs, gangways and cranes are hydraulically operated so they can be sealed tight against bulkheads or into floors. Most equipment is hidden behind integrated hydraulic doors, including the yacht’s tenders, anchors, and even a set of navigation lights designed for the sole purpose of traversing Egypt’s Suez Canal (but were sadly never used).

The yacht has a range of more than 8,000 nautical miles at her full cruising speed of 17 knots. She was never run at full capacity. The farthest, in fact, she ever ventured from the Med was to the Caribbean in 1993. Lady Moura was a homebody.
What a home. Matching her 344-foot length is a huge internal volume of 6,359 gross tons across seven decks, including a deck for the owner’s family. She accommodates up to 26 guests, serviced by 72 crew and staff, and two crew elevators. Painstakingly preserved with regular maintenance and vigilant upkeep, Lady Moura is a museum piece adorned with Art Deco detailing and sumptuous styling.

Perhaps the most surprising element during our tour is Lady Moura’s immaculate condition. Thirty years after launch, she has all her original flooring, carpets, walls and staircases. The silk walls in the guest cabins look as new as they did in 1990. Not even a new coat of paint has been required to spruce up Luigi Sturchio’s original interior color scheme.
The simple reason for this unusually high level of preservation is that Lady Moura has barely been used, other than by immediate family. The formal 24-seater dining room has entertained guests just three times—the most recent being last month to announce her sale.

Despite her age, Lady Moura feels like a modern yacht. Her beach club was considered revolutionary three decades ago and stacks up well beside contemporary superyachts. Positioned amidships with balconies both port and starboard, the club transformed how the owner could access the yacht from the water. The indoor pool with its retractable roof, gym, spa with sauna, and cinema complete the full complement of entertainment amenities.
The owner’s deck was also a novel concept. Reserved exclusively for family living, the floor contains six guest cabins, and a full-beam master suite. Generous walk-in wardrobes and two en suites pair with enough space for the owner to comfortably remain within his private quarters (as he did when the yacht became his permanent residence in 2018). Below-deck cabins, including a full-beam VIP, are reserved for non-family guests.
The superyacht had an overhaul for seven months in 2017 at Blohm+Voss, and her 2018/19 refit focused on rebuilding the generators and engines, installing new teak decks and refurbishing crew and technical spaces. Captain Bosse, who is obviously partial, believes that Lady Moura represents excellent value, given her condition and design. He calls it “the steal of the century.”

World’s first mega-yacht ‘Lady Moura’, internationally known as the ship with the golden letters, visits port of Spain’s Malaga
LAST Saturday March 18, saw the arrival of superyacht Lady Moura, internationally famous for its impeccable white color on which the name of the boat and a distinctive coat of arms are carved in solid gold, to the Port of Malaga.
Berthed mid-morning at dock number one within the megayacht marina facilities, this vessel, a reference of nautical luxury, is expected to make a stopover of several days in Malaga waters.
The Lady Moura was the 9th largest private yacht in the world when launched in 1990 and is currently owned by the third-richest billionaire in Mexico, Ricardo Salinas Pliego.
This jewel of naval engineering was created by the German shipyard Blohm & Voss, in collaboration with the renowned Italian architect Luigi Sturchio, who was in charge of the interior design .
Luxury amenities include a heliport and a Sikorsky S76 helicopter, an indoor swimming pool with an open roof, a gymnasium, spa, sauna, a nightclub with a DJ booth, a theatre, a cinema, a casino, a 25 metre dining table and a bakery.
It has a capacity of 30 passengers and comes with a crew of 61.
The last time this spectacular four-level vessel, 344 feet long by 62 feet wide, called in Malaga waters was in July last year.

Update: Steve Jobs’ “unmanned” yacht collides with Lady Moura
In an official update provided to superyachtnews, it appears venus’ bridge was unmanned at the time of a minor collision that has sparked debate online….
An eyebrow-raising incident occurred off the coast of Naples, Italy, on 22 July 2024, involving a collision between Venus , owned by the widow of Steve Jobs, Laurene Powell Jobs, and Lady Moura , owned by Mexican billionaire Ricardo Salinas Pliego.
In a statement provided to SuperyachtNews by Grupo Salinas, it appears that the bridge of Venus was unmanned at the time of the collision.
“ Lady Moura was anchored in the Bay of Naples at a depth of 40 metres, deploying 7 shackles of chain, which meets the minimum requirements for safe anchoring under the given conditions,” the spokesperson explained.
“This was calculated in accordance with the standards of the International Association of Classification Societies (IACS). The length in metres was determined using a coefficient of hold of 5, or per the Admiralty method, which calculates the number of shackles as the square root of the water depth in metres, multiplied by 1.5.
“Several hours later, Venus arrived at the anchorage and seemingly misjudged the length of the chain deployed by Lady Moura. A sudden and violent squall with winds of 50-55 knots from an unexpected direction—different from the prevailing forecasts—led to the impact between the vessels.”
However, despite numerous efforts by the crew of Lady Moura to alert the crew of Venus by blowing the whistle and hailing on the radio, “it appears that the bridge of Venus was unmanned”. Notably, neither vessel dragged anchor during the event.
“Thankfully, the damages to both yachts were minimal and cosmetic. Within hours, both parties resolved the situation amicably and professionally. Grupo Salinas appreciates the professionalism demonstrated by all involved and the swift resolution to ensure the safety and integrity of the vessels and their crews.”
Footage from the crash, posted on 7 August, has since sparked considerable debate online.
The video, shared by Pliego on X, formerly known as Twitter, shows the 78-metre Feadship drifting towards Pliego’s yacht before making contact with the 105-metre Blohm+Voss yacht, despite cries from the crew. Both vessels were anchored in the bay at the time.
“You won’t believe this, but our yacht was hit while we were in Naples,” said Pliego in a tweet.
“Steve Jobs’ yacht, founder of Apple (now owned by his wife Laurene), hit us while we were anchored off Naples. I’d like to know what the captain and crew were doing that they didn’t see a yacht the size of mine in front of them.”
Pliego added that the collision ultimately resulted in nothing more than a scratch; however, it will need substantial funds to repair it. The billionaire then jokingly suggested to his followers to “go and buy Apple products to help them pay”.
Whilst the spokesperson has since noted that the crash was due to a change in wind, the competency of the crew has come under fire, with many questioning how this incident was possible in the first place.
“The crew on the yacht Venu s were twiddling their thumbs; there’s no way they couldn’t see the Lady Moura ,” says Fabian Alonso (@fabianla69) on X.
“It’s incredible that no crew member came out to place a fender anywhere; it seems like a ship adrift,” adds cafas (@cafascafas).
Despite the incident, the yachts have since cruised elsewhere, with Lady Moura now in Mykonos, Greece, and Venus sailing in the Ligurian Sea.
“Here is the video, so you can see that there is no shortage of idiots in the world and understand how important it is to have a responsible and attentive captain in command,” adds Pliego. “There’s no other way, we’re going to continue enjoying our holidays.”

Onboard Lady Moura: The world’s first superyacht

The 104-metre Lady Moura blazed a trail for superyachts back in 1990, and now her owner has put her on the market.
As I relinquish my shoes and totter up the gangway, a sign of what is to come glints in the enviably strong sun: the letters on the back of the boat – LADY MOURA – are plated in real gold.
By far the largest yacht in Port Hercules, Monaco, Lady Moura is a 7,700-tonne colossus stretching 104 metres. Built by the German shipyard Blohm+Voss (the same yard that built the Bismarck), Lady Moura celebrates her 30th birthday in 2020. And having had just one owner in all that time, she’s now up for sale.
Lady Moura’ s interior, curated by Italian designer Luigi Sturchio (who created the astonishing 85-metre Nabila for Saudi billionaire Adnan Khashoggi), is luxury by numbers. Gold and cream abound, dark wood surfaces are buffed to within an inch of their lives, and the carpet is so thick that you’re almost wading. You would never guess that 8,400kg of machinery chugs and whirs below.

Among its splendours, the yacht has a 35-cubic-metre indoor swimming pool with a retractable roof. It also boasts a fully functional intensive care unit and a helipad large enough to accommodate any helicopter in the world. Naturally this includes Lady Mour a’s own Sikorsky S76C+, although this isn’t for sale. The vessel does, however, come loaded with two sea-faring tenders, including a stunning Venetian.
With a 6,400 gross tonnage volume, Lady Moura is seriously big (even the Royal Yacht Britannia was just 5,769 tonnes). In her dining room I discover two ancient Egypt-inspired mosaics; the gleaming dining table is a staggering eight metres long and has been used only three times in 30 years. In the palatial cabins, super-king-size beds are dwarfed by the sheer volume of acreage around them. There is a walk-in safe in one of the suites.
During my tour, I peer seven storeys down a stairwell, discovering that below deck is just as cavernous as the sleeping quarters. Labyrinthine corridors lead to cabins for 60 crew, offering a staff:guest ratio of two to one. On my way to the bakery I walk through a deafeningly loud room packed floor to ceiling with machinery. An engineer tells us that Lady Moura ’s two 6,868-horsepower engines could take us from Monaco to Singapore without stopping – that’s a range of 8,000 nautical miles at 17 knots.
Her pre-eminence in the yachting world back in the early Nineties soon becomes apparent. Today Lady Moura is widely considered to be the first superyacht, partly because of her magnitude but also because of the countless ‘firsts’ found on board.

She is one of the first yachts to have beach clubs that open up on the ship’s sides (or indeed to have beach clubs at all), as well as one of the first to include boat garages, extendable bridge wings and numerous gangways.
Lady Moura has been maintained with regular small upgrades rather than any major refits, with her longest yard period to date being a seven-month stay at Blohm+Voss in Hamburg in 2017. She is in impeccable condition considering, and her iconic reputation makes Lady Moura ’s ‘for sale’ status a big deal in floaty circles. She is rumoured to have cost more than $200 million to build, and one Monaco-based brokerage has hinted that yachts of Lady Moura ’s stature ‘usually retain their value’.
Another source, however, has floated $150 million, considering her 30 years of wear and tear and particular style: Saudi-owned yachts are generally considered traditional in their design and come with limited outdoor space. However, the yacht remains the biggest sales task that broker Camper & Nicholsons has ever had. Over a few glasses of Louis Roederer champagne served aboard Lady Moura , the ship’s chef serves up a lunch including a starter covered in edible flowers, perfectly seared scallops, and tiramisu.
Captain Matthias Bosse reflects on his 18 years at the helm of Lady Moura : ‘You can build the most incredible vessels, but it is time that fills a boat with a certain spirit. When you come on board you get goosebumps – you can’t build that in.’
Lady Moura , it is stressed, is a family yacht. She was the primary residence of the owner, Saudi billionaire Nasser al Rashid, who named it after his first wife, Lebanese-born Mouna Ayoub (Moura is a portmanteau of Mouna and al Rashid). His six sons and three daughters were raised on board. It is said that the crew and staff (many of whom have been with the yacht for decades) still refer to them as ‘the children’. Lady Moura has never been chartered, and everything – carpets, curtains, furnishings – is original.
Rich heritage
But it’s not just the yacht’s floating credentials that make it attractive to potential buyers, there’s also its provenance. Her owner has made his billions in engineering – Forbes has estimated his wealth at about $8 billion, but it could be closer to $20 billion.
Al Rashid was educated at the University of Texas (he has since lavished funds on the university and had a department named in his honour) before setting up a firm in Riyadh, which was later chosen by Saudi kings Khalid and Fahd to be the engineering consultant to the royal family – and became one of the largest engineering firms in the kingdom. He remains an adviser to King Abdullah.
Now in his eighties, al Rashid dedicates much of his time to philanthropy, sitting on the board of charitable initiatives such as the Handicapped Children’s Association, the Prince Salman Centre for Disability Research and the National SeaKeepers Society. He is also a co-founder of the Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation.
Back when al Rashid was studying in Texas, George Bush Sr was making his first steps into Congress: the pair became acquainted and were close enough for Bush to later be a guest aboard Lady Moura . In her autobiography, Barbara Bush recalls a trip to sea on the yacht with ‘our friend’ Nasser al Rashid in May 1999.
One can only imagine the conversations that took place aboard the yacht between the former president and billionaire confidant of the Saudi sovereign in the midst of the Iraq disarmament crisis.
When asked why the owner was selling such a treasured family heirloom, Camper & Nicholsons CEO Paolo Casani alluded to complexity behind the sale. ‘He has many reasons for selling,’ said Casani of the owner. ‘You don’t decide to sell a yacht that you have had for 30 years overnight.’ You certainly don’t. Perhaps an answer is hiding in plain view. On al Rashid’s personal website, alongside details of his career and achievements, it notes: ‘His favourite hobby is walking.’
More likely he has reached an age when the attractions of life afloat are less apparent. Or perhaps he simply wants to be closer to his grown-up family, who have provided him with five grandchildren.
It doesn’t really matter. What’s more interesting is what happens next, who the next owner is. For the second chapter in Lady Moura ’s voyage to match her first, they have pretty big deckshoes to fill.

Tense footage shows the moment a mega-yacht owned by the late Apple owner Steve Jobs crashed into the side of a Mexican businessman's boat.
The pricey $200 million (£157 million) Lady Moura yacht, owned by businessman Ricardo Salinas Pliego, was sailing off the coast of Naples, Italy when a gust of wind sent Jobs' $140 million (£110 million) Venus yacht on a collision course with his.
In footage shared by Salinas on Instagram, crew members on his yacht can be seen scrambling to get the attention of the Venus' crew as it drifted dangerously close.
The two boats then bounced off of each other before Jobs' futuristic looking yacht floated backwards.
It's understood that neither Salinas or Jobs' widow Laurene Powell Jobs - who currently owns the Venus - were onboard at the time of the crash.
Salinas later clarified on social media that no major damage had happened to his yacht, other than a 'big scratch' which he expected would cause a small fortune to fix.
"You won't believe this, but our yacht was hit while we were in Naples," he wrote in a lengthy caption alongside the clip.
"I'd like to know what the captain and crew were doing that they didn't see a yacht the size of mine in front of them. The good thing is that nothing more than a scratch happened, but it's a big scratch that's going to cost a lot to fix ha ha ha.
"So go to @elektra.mxand buy Apple products to help pay for their little joke."
He went on to claim that the crew of the Venus were at fault, before concluding the post by stating that he had chosen to upload the video to show 'how important it is to have a responsible and attentive captain in command'.
An update on the situation has since been issued via Boat International, with the outlet saying the collision was caused by the wind changing 'very quickly'.
"On 22 July while at anchor, Venus came into contact with Lady Moura , which was also anchored," the statement read.
"No family was on board, only crew. The wind changed very suddenly, picking up from a breeze to 55 knots over the course of a few minutes.
"Neither boat dragged anchor, though the other boat was on a chain double the length expected in the depth of water they were in. Both captains were in discussion immediately following the incident about minor repairs needed."
The Venus yacht had been designed and created specifically for Jobs back in 2009, however production wasn't completed until 2012, a year after the Apple co-founder's death.
Meanwhile Salinas made his fortune as the founder and chairman of Group Salinas, which specialises in media and telecommunications.

Two of the world’s most famous luxury yachts owned by a pair of the richest people in the world collided in a fender-bender accident while anchored off the coast of Naples, Italy this week.

Mexican retail and broadcasting billionaire Ricardo Salinas Pliego took to Instagram Wednesday to share a video of a sleek boat drifting toward his mega yacht Lady Moura as crew members blast the horn, scream and shout in a bid to get the crew’s attention.
The oncoming vessel, Salinas said, was the Venus luxury yacht famously built for Apple co-founder Steve Jobs and now owned by his widow, Laurene Powell Jobs.
The video shows Venus bounce off the side of the Lady Moura without breaching the ship’s hull before it drifts away backwards.
Salinas posted there was no major damage but that his ship was left with “a big scratch that’s going to be a lot to fix.”
He then told his followers to buy Apple products through his Group Elektra retail chain to help Powell Jobs pay for the damage.
Neither billionaire owner was on board the ship at the time of the crash, according to Dagens news of Media Group Denmark.

As of Thursday, he was ranked as the 221st richest person in the world with an estimated net worth of $10 billion.

US alleges sanctioned Russian oligarch’s niece made payments for his $300M yacht
The yacht, known as the Amadea, was seized by officials in 2022, with the U.S. alleging billionaire Putin ally Suleiman Kerimov is the ultimate beneficial owner.
U.S. authorities claim to be one step closer to proving a seized $300 million mega yacht is owned by sanctioned Russian Suleiman Kerimov, according to new court filings that detail alleged payments for the boat from the oligarch’s niece.
The yacht, a 348-foot luxury vessel known as Amadea, was seized in Fiji in 2022 by local officials at the request of the United States, as part of the Justice Department’s ongoing efforts to identify and seize assets of sanctioned Russian oligarchs in the wake of Russia’s 2022 invasion of Ukraine.
Kerimov, known for throwing lavish parties and for his reportedly close relationship with Vladimir Putin, was sanctioned by the U.S. in 2018. Britain and the European Union later followed suit.

However, since the Amadea’s seizure, another Russian oligarch, Eduard Khudainatov, who is not currently under U.S. sanctions, has claimed to be the yacht’s rightful owner — an assertion U.S. authorities deny.
Prosecutors allege that new documents show Kerimov’s niece, Alisa Gadzhieva, entered into a loan agreement with the company that owns the yacht, Errigal Marine Limited, and then made two payments to Khudainatov’s holding company, Invest International Finance Ltd, Intelligence Online reported .
“The United States takes sanction evasion seriously and will use all tools at its disposal to ensure that sanctioned individuals are held accountable for their crimes,” U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York Damian Williams said in an earlier statement .
The ship belongs to an array of high-value luxury items linked to Kerimov, including private jets and sportscars, like a $650,000 Ferrari that Kerimov totaled in a fiery crash on the French Riviera in 2006.

The yacht’s seizure followed ICIJ’s Pandora Papers, which included revelations on the offshore financial empire of Kerimov and his closest associates. The investigation showed billions of dollars flowing through opaque offshore shell companies associated with Kerimov, and covert money flows tied to oligarchs and others close to the Kremlin. It also highlighted offshore professionals who have helped oligarchs secretly buy luxury assets like yachts and jets.
Gadzhieva’s brother, Kerimov’s nephew Nariman Gadzhiev, is also under U.S. sanctions for allegedly serving as an assistant and financial facilitator for Kerimov. ICIJ’s reporting showed that, in 2012, a firm registered in Gadzhiev’s name worked with Credit Suisse to secure a $67 million loan for the acquisition of a custom-built Boeing 737 Business Jet as well as a Bombardier Global Express jet. A few years later, an article in Forbes Russia described Kerimov as owning the same kind of Boeing jet.
The Amadea, which is currently in U.S. custody, has already cost over $7 million in taxpayer funds to maintain while the legal battle plays out, The Guardian reported.

The damages to Lady Moura will likely be covered by insurance, which can range from 5% to 6% of the vessel's total value. Salinas Pliego reportedly bought the superyacht for $125 million in 2022 .
