Portugal’s location in Western Europe gives the country a warm, temperate, Mediterranean climate with a wet season in the winter. During the winter months, the average daytime high temperature is 61°F (16°C) and in the spring months, temperatures gradually rise and reach around 72°F (22°C).  In southern Portugal, the summer months last from May to October and the weather is warm with very little rain. Sailing Qualifications

To skipper a bareboat charter or flotilla yacht, you need to hold a practical sailing certificate equivalent to RYA Day Skipper Practical qualification or RYA International Certificate of Competence (ICC) . For charters in Greece, you must now have the ICC certificate . You must also be assisted by at least one competent crew member over the age of 18.

The port authorities in Greece are now insisting on one of the following practical certificates: RYA ICC (International Certificate of Competence), RYA Coastal, RYA Yachtmaster, ASA IPC (International Proficiency Certificate) or the IYT (International Yacht Training) Passport. If you hold an RYA Day Skipper or ASA104 it will no longer be accepted and you need to obtain either an ICC or IPC from the corresponding issuing body (RYA or ASA). If your RYA Coastal/Yachtmaster or ASA105/106 certificate is more than 12 years old and does not have a photo ID, then we would also strongly advise applying for an ICC or IPC. If you are a member of the RYA or ASA, you may qualify for a discount or free certificate, otherwise, you will have to pay. The approximate cost is £50. Please use this link - RYA application for the ICC or ASA application for the IPC.

For charters in Croatia, Malta and the Canaries , at least one member of the crew or the skipper will also need a VHF licence .

RYA qualifications can be obtained by RYA sailing schools in the UK or alternatively choose from one of our overseas centres in Gibraltar, Greece or Turkey .

For  Seychelles,  the local authorities require an ICC for the skipper of a bareboat or flotilla yacht charter.

For Caribbean and Tropical charters, formal qualifications are not compulsory, however, you should be Day Skipper standard and be assisted by at least one competent crew . A brief sailing resume should be provided to outline your experience.

For Thailand A Day Skipper qualification is required as a minimum and you must have at least 3 weeks of skippering experience prior to your charter. A VHF qualification is compulsory.

If you don't hold the relevant qualifications then why not add a skipper ?

Sailing Levels

Winds force 2-3 (4-11 Knots)combined with generally shorter distances. Good for beginner or intermediate sailors. Line-of-sight navigation but basic knowledge of charts and ability to plot your position required.

Winds force 3-5 (7-21 Knots) with approximately 15-20nm per day. Intermediate experience required. Predominately line of sight navigation but an understanding of how to sail in open water.

Winds force 4-6 (11-27 Knots) with mileage of approximately 20nm+ per day. Ideal for experienced skippers looking to venture out to new destinations. Day skipper standard but with experienced crew would be recommended.

Suggested 1 week itinerary from lisbon,  day 1 : doca de belem, lisbon.

Start your week's sail at Belem Dock, a large marina with a supermarket and numerous restaurants nearby.

 DAY 2 : Oeiras (7nm)

Leaving Lisbon you can appreciate all the surroundings including the majestic Ponte de 25 Abril bridge behind you, the River Tagus and finally the “Bugio” lighthouse which resides on an island in the estuary on the Fort of São Lourenço do Bugio. Shortly after you will arrive at Oeiras, a charming port located just next to the São Julião Fort. Go for an afternoon stroll on the seaside promenade or take a taxi to Marquês de Pombal Palace to view this 18th century palace built in the Rococo and Baroque styles.

 DAY 3 : Cascais (4nm)

Leaving Oeiras you will pass several beautiful beaches; Carcavelos, Parede, São Pedro, São João and Cascais. All of these beaches are golden sandy beaches and fantastic for swimming. Cascais is a beautiful and traditional fishing town which was once the summer retreat of the Portuguese nobility. Now you will find a bustling holiday destination which still maintains its historic charm. Wander around the pretty town centre or visit the Castro Guimaraes Museum. From Cascais you are not far from the most westerly point of mainland Europe, Cabo da Rocha, which on a clear night provides you with a fantastic sunset!

 DAY 4 : Sines (43nm)

Head south past Espichel Cape and down the coast towards Sines. From Comporta to Sines the coast is an unbroken strip of sand with great beaches such as Pinheirinho and Galé. Sines is one of the most important cities on the Alentejo coast and is an industrial port and a cape as well, making it a natural stopping point for visitors to the region. A traditional fishing port, it was here that Vasco da Gama, the great navigator was born. Who knows, his travels may have inspired the Festival Músicas do Mundo, the world music festival that is held here annually in early summer.

 DAY 5: Troia (27nm)

Leaving Sines behind, enjoy a sail north and stop of at any of the beaches you missed yesterday. On your way to the new Tróia marina you are almost guaranteed to encounter dolphins who often swim around the boat, inviting you to play. Tróia is a peninsula between the Sado River and the Atlantic ocean. White sandy beaches, clear waters and excellent services ashore. Restaurants, shops, casino and bars are all at your fingertips.

 DAY 6 : Sesimbra (10nm)

Continue past the Arrábida coast with isolated beaches and clear blue water and on towards Sesimbra, a picturesque fishing village with a cozy marina and a beautiful bay.

 DAY 7 : Doca de Belem, Lisbon (21nm)

A final day of sailing north towards Lisbon and if you are lucky you will get a breeze from WNW that will take you directly there! Entering the River Tagus, enjoy the sail up river, discovering the old town of Lisbon from the water. Terreiro do Paço, Saint Jorge’s Castle, Parque das Nações are just some of many sights you can see. Arriving at Parque das Nações you can appreciate one of the longest suspending bridges in Europe, Vasco da Gama’s bridge. Return to Belém Marina to enjoy your final night in Lisbon.

Average winds Force 3-5 which are more predictable in the summer months. The ideal sailing window is May-October. Some open Atlantic sailing and longer distances.

Sailing from Porto, you will be on calm inland waters.

Boat hire in Portugal is a popular activity for tourists as you would imagine in a country with such splendid coastlines and nautical history. The hotspot for boat rentals and yacht charters is in the Algarve which is a strip of coastline at the southern tip of the Portuguese mainland. Other main locations for boat rentals and charters would be in Lisbon, Porto and the Açores, the Algarve however is by far the top spot with boats of all sizes whizzing up and down the coastline. 

What boat rental options are there in the Algarve? 

The first thing to decide is whether you would like to go on a shared boat or a private boat, this makes a huge difference in terms of budget and comfort. Shared boats can go out with a ticket price as low as €25 per person, some of these boats can accommodate 100+ passengers so bear in mind they can be crowded and noisy but are the low budget option. There are small RIBs that can be hired with crew to find dolphins and see the caves, these are not so expensive but again bear in mind you are in a RIB so will get wet and there are not toilets or facilities - prepare in advance!

Then its all about choosing a sailing boat or a motor boat.

What is the best Yacht Charter option in the Algarve? 

Hiring a Sailing Boat in the Algarve

Sailing boats offer adventure and a real experience of active sailing and a chance to get involved with the boat, they do tend to have less deck space and because the boats have a "Keel", (which can be a few metres deep), they are unable to get into the shallower waters around the caves. They also have a mast so cant enter any of the actual caves. Hiring a sailing boat is great to get wet and to enjoy the ocean at a gentler pace with more focus on the experience than the environment around.

Something to bear in mind - Being subject to wind conditions its also less certain what you will be able to see on a charter and how far you can go. 

Hiring a Motor Yacht in the Algarve

Motor Yachts for Private Hire are probably the best option for smaller groups from 1-12 or larger groups taking multiple boats and sailing in convoy. Motor yachts are in the luxury category and offer space, comfort, privacy, security and usually include a level of drinks and snacks. Its a place you can relax with loved ones and have more control over your day. All of the shared boat options operate to a set route and schedule but with the private boat option you can work with the skippers to plan the day based on your group, more time for activities and swimming for example or a relaxing long cruise to see more of the coastline. The choice can be yours.

I researched for smaller yachts and catamarans for my sister's bachelorette party in Faro, Portugal and when I saw this posting, I immediately knew that this was the perfect choice for our party. Bruno was completely helpful, communicative, flexible, patient and transparent during the time leading up to the point of purchase — I actually contacted him of another site and he recommended that I go directly with him as it would be cheaper! The day of we had Annie and the skipper of the boat who were so friendly and warm and offered us drinks, prepared the snacks we brought , took our pics, and had really informative conversations about the island we were anchoring at and general nice talk and jokes. We even forgot our picnic basket on the boat and Annie offered to go out of her way to drop it off at our Airbnb!!! She was communicative and did it our of her own volition and kindness and love for what she does and it really left an impression on us. That day out to sea was so beautiful and magical for us! Carlos and Daniela provided us (2 couples) the most amazing, unforgettable day with a private all-day tour in Ria Formosa! They were so incredibly nice and knowledgeable about the area, helped us with everything we needed, the boat was big, beautiful and ideal, gave us access to the most beautiful beaches, we had a blast doing paddleboard and swimming in the gorgeous water... It was the most perfect day!

We had such a great time all around, absolutely no complaints. We loved the boat itself but what really made the experience so great was that the skipper and hostess were wonderful. Extremely friendly, welcoming and accommodating. They will tailor the experience to you for whatever activity or sights you would like to see or do. We had beautiful weather and just wanted to get out to the open water and sail, and hopefully see some dolphins, and their genuine excitement really made it apparent that they love their job, and that always makes an experience better. This was a wonderful experience. The staff were very friendly and gave us options of what to do with our time on the catamaran. We chose to go out to sea first where we were surrounded by dolphins! They then took us to a cove to swim, it was lovely. The boat is beautiful and we were sad to get off.

We hired the boat for our family of 4 and it couldn’t have been easier or more fun. We parked right outside the office and we’re immediately taken by boat on a short ride to meet the skipper and crew for the day. The boat was immaculately clean and had everything we needed for a fun day. The restaurant Estamine on the island had the most incredible fish dishes and the Staff were really friendly.

Top ! The lagoon is just beautiful to discover by boat .. the desert island .. etc .. only happiness. Bruno is responsive and offers serious quality service. I recommend.

Once you confirm your reservation, your broker will process your payment.

• If you are booking for a single day and your reservation is confirmed more than 7 days in advance, a deposit of either $1,000 USD or 50% of the total cost of the reservation (whichever is greater) is processed immediately in order to hold the yacht. Once your embarkation date is 7 days away, the remainder of the amount due is processed.
• If you are booking for a single day and your reservation is made 7 days or less in advance, the total price of your reservation is processed immediately.
• If you are booking for a multi-day charter and your reservation is confirmed more than 30 days in advance, a deposit of 50% of the cost of the yacht is processed immediately in order to hold the yacht. Once your embarkation date is 30 days away, the other 50% is collected for the price of the yacht, plus the APA, plus the taxes due.

Terms of refunds are dictated by the Charter Agreement. Generally, once a payment is collected, it is non-refundable. In certain circumstances, as dictated by the Charter Agreement, credits can be provided so you will be able to enjoy your yacht charter at a future date that is convenient for you.
