Richard Mille Classic Yacht Regatta Returns to Falmouth

Categories:

General News

yacht week falmouth

Falmouth, Cornwall, will again provide the showcase start for one of the world’s most prestigious classic yacht regattas this summer after the historic Harbour so impressed luxury Swiss watchmaker Richard Mille with its organisation and unique setting for the brand’s inaugural Classic Cup event last year.

The Richard Mille Cup will gather a fleet of around fifteen beautifully restored classic superyachts in a contemporary take on the regatta circuits of pre-war years, beginning with three days of racing hosted by Falmouth Harbour and the Royal Cornwall Yacht Club from June 2 and ending in Le Havre, France, on June 15.

The event will bring around 500 competitors and their guests to Falmouth as well as hundreds of spectators, crowds of whom last year took to the water or lined the coast around Falmouth Harbour and Bay, St Mawes and St Anthony Headland to watch the majestic vessels’ fierce competition.

Dr William Collier of Classic Regattas who organise the Richard Mille Cup says, “A lot of thought and planning went into the 2023 event, the feedback from participants was tremendous and when we started to discuss the 2024 regatta we realised that the best was simply stay with the proven formulae of Falmouth, Dartmouth, Cowes and Le Havre.

“These are all mythical destinations for sailors and the yacht clubs at each of the venues excelled themselves so we are very happy to return knowing that we will get a warm welcome and excellent racing.”

The Royal Cornwall Yacht Club has been a feature of Falmouth’s iconic harbour since 1871 and as a vibrant club today hosts many national and international events. During last year’s Richard Mille Cup the RCYC Sailing Trust took eighty local young people out on the water to watch the racing aboard the pleasure boat Princessa and proved such a focus the watchmaker will be supporting a similar outing this year.

Royal Cornwall Yacht Club Commodore Sarah Hancock says, “I was delighted to receive the call asking if the Royal Cornwall Yacht Club would host the Richard Mille Cup again this year. Owners and crews clearly appreciated the racing and the hospitality of the onshore facilities that we provided and expressed a strong wish to return.

“I think it’s due in part to the stunning location, but also to the huge effort put in by our race management team to cope with what were very challenging, light-airs conditions in 2023. And for spectators, what could be better than watching the spectacular majesty of these classic yachts racing so competitively in our historic bay, as they did over 100 years ago?”

Falmouth Harbour will showcase the first events of the two-week competition featuring schooners and cutters joining from around the world, some of which are well over a century old. From Falmouth the fleets will race to Dartmouth in Devon, then Cowes, Isle of Wight and on to a spectacular finish at Le Havre, France.

Some of the yachts, including last year’s overall winner the 42m twin-masted schooner Mariette and the 65m three-master Adix, have been restored or refitted on many occasions over the years by Falmouth’s own superyacht specialists Pendennis Shipyard – in between their voyaging and competing across the world.

Falmouth Harbour CEO Miles Carden says, “Falmouth – the third deepest natural harbour in the world with a history steeped in boatbuilding and renovation – is an incredibly hospitable port town. Mooring and berthing in the heart of our inner harbour accentuates the spectatorship of the Richard Mille Cup for the community and for crews and guests – an opportunity to step straight off these beautiful boats into our vibrant town.

“Hosting the prestige and size of these vessels is not without its complexities but all do-able thanks to a brilliant Harbour team. We are delighted to again be hosting the start of this incredible race.”

The Richard Mille contenders are invited owners and charterers of yachts built before 1939 or faithful replicas of such yachts, with vessels competing in the Schooner and Cutter categories. The event includes racing and social events organised by the Royal Cornwall and the Royal Dart Yachts Clubs and the Royal Yacht Squadron, before the final race of the Société des Régates du Havre in France.

The second Richard Mille Cup will take place from June 2 to June 15 2024 with further details of the events, races and competing vessels announced in due course. For more information visit www.richardmillecup.com

The waters of the Carrick Roads and Falmouth Bay provide one of the finest natural venues for sailing events in the world.

They are internationally renowned as a venue for sail racing events, attracted by its spectacular scenery, sheltered waters and supporting infrastructure of traditional boat yards, marinas, sail makers and chandlers – not forgetting the hotels, guest houses, restaurants, shops and visitor attractions. The resulting benefits to the local community provided by our sailing events are many indeed. For those who have not sailed before in the Carrick Roads and the Helford River, you are missing a proper treat. The expanse of water is like sailing on the open sea, but is usually much more sheltered and if you want bigger waves you can always venture into Falmouth Bay. The local area welcomes all sailing visitors, whether racing or cruising, dinghies, keelboats and multihulls. Why not bring your boat along with you on holiday and join in on our racing activities?

Besides world class sailing events PoFSA also supports a lively programme of traditional Village Regattas. We invite you all to take part in the village regattas, ashore or afloat, where you will be able to enjoy the spectacular sight of our magnificent local sailboat classes as they compete against each other.

So what is PoFSA? It is an association run by the local sailing clubs in the Falmouth and Helford area of Cornwall, the class associations of locally sailed boats and the local village regattas. Its purpose is to promote sailing in Falmouth by coordinating all sailboat racing activities locally and organising Falmouth Sailing Week, the highlight of our sailing year.

One of the main reasons in creating this website is to encourage an interest in all the sailing events organised by the PoFSA Clubs, Sailing Class Associations and Village Regatta Committees by providing a place to publish our Sailing Calendar and information about the Village Regattas. Many of these local regattas have been running for over 100 years and are run by a team of volunteers running the racing and the all-important teas and drinks afterwards.

Often they feature children's beach sports events too. The atmosphere of the village regattas is unique: great racing and a marvellous welcome at the organising base afterwards. Come and join in, whether you are a local or a visitor, you will be made most welcome.

This is where a love of sailing started for so many; perhaps it could for you too.

If you have any comments or suggestions about the content of this website, please let us know, new ideas are welcome.

Falmouth Sailing Week: 11th to 17th August, 2024

Falmouth Sailing Week 2024 will begin with the Skippers' Briefing and Reception at the Royal Cornwall Yacht Club on Saurday 10th August. Not just for skippers, all participants and FSW volunteers are invited.

Following an introductory welcome and the briefings by the Race Officers of the Carrick Roads and Bay Fleets, there will be hospitality and music.

This should provide a good start to what will become an excellent week!

In 2020, despite the disruption of the Covid pandemic, the many uncertainties that were generated, and the abbreviation of the event to only four days, Falmouth Sailing Week won the title of Event of the Year at the British Yachting Awards.

We have since reverted to our standard seven day format and have again included dinghy classes (racing in the Carrick Roads). The main regatta is a series of races, with courses laid in Falmouth Bay and the Carrick Roads by qualified Race Officers. All classes of boat – expert or beginner – are catered for.

Each club hosts one day, providing teas for competitors, prize giving for that day's racing, and entertainment into the early evening.

  • Sunday – Helford River SC & Royal Cornwall YC (Carrick Fleet)
  • Monday – Mylor YC,
  • Tuesday – Restronguet SC,
  • Wednesday – no prizegiving,
  • Thursday – Royal Cornwall YC (includes Wednesday's Ancasta Champagne Race),
  • Friday – St Mawes SC, and finally
  • Saturday – Flushing SC!

On Sunday, there is a Regatta Tea and Prize-Giving for the Carrick Fleet at RCYC.

Bay Fleet competitors will race on Wednesday in the Ancasta Champagne Race. The Champagne Race is a longer race in Falmouth and Gerrans Bays. The Carrick Fleet competitors will race in the standalone Mainbrace Rum Race, first introduced in 2021.

PoFSA works closely with the Falmouth Shoreside Committee. Throughout the week this committee organises an extensive programme of events to suit all tastes and ages in Falmouth Town. Shoreside Programme .

Come and join us in the racing, or watch the action take place in one of the most beautiful sailing grounds in the world.

The dates of Falmouth Sailing Week for 2025 are Sunday 10th to Saturday 16th August.

For further information visit the Falmouth Sailing Week website .

For our competitors and sailing club partners we have created an exclusive merchandise collection with an option to customise the garments with your boat name.

New vintage yacht regatta sets sail from Falmouth

Thursday, June 8th, 2023

Written by: Marine Industry News

Richard Mille Cup

Some of the world’s most beautiful classic superyachts are gathering in Falmouth Harbour this weekend for the first Richard Mille Cup, which features three days of fierce competition hosted by the Royal Cornwall Yacht Club.

The inaugural Richard Mille Cup, which runs from 10-13 June 2023, will take spectators back to the classic yacht races of the late 1800s — with phase one seeing Falmouth’s Harbour and Bay dominated by towering wooden masts and billowing sails on twelve authentic wooden vessels – some of which are well over a century old.

Falmouth Harbour will showcase the first events of the two-week competition featuring historical yachts from Great Britain and France. It will begin in Falmouth and finish in Le Havre, with three days hard-fought coastal racing in each of Falmouth and Cowes, and passage races to Dartmouth and Le Havre.

Richard Mille Cup

“Classic yachts bear a living, breathing testimony to the highest values of workmanship, heritage and tradition passed on to us through centuries,” says a Richard Mille spokesperson in a statement. “By creating this challenge, we aim to set sail through history and to bring this high-end craft very much back to life.”

Some of the yachts, including the 65m three master Adix and the 42m twin masted schooner Mariette have been restored or refitted on many occasions over the years by Falmouth’s own superyacht specialists Pendennis Shipyard – in between their voyaging and competing across the world.

The Richard Mille Cup will pit these classic vessels against each other in both inshore and offshore competition with more than 200 sailors expected to participate in the racing.

Richard Mille Cup

The Royal Cornwall Yacht Club has been a feature of Falmouth’s harbour since 1871 and as a vibrant club today hosts many national and international events.

“We are extremely proud to have been selected as the initial venue for this special and innovative event in the yachting calendar,” says RCYC Commodore Sarah Hancock. “It should prove a major spectacle and attraction for Falmouth, with over 200 participants arriving in port and be a very rare opportunity to see such stunning yachts competing seriously against each other.”

Boats will be racing from Falmouth on the 11, 12 and 13 June, starting each day at 10.30am with a start line approximately 800 metres off Pendennis Point — giving tremendous views to spectators from Pendennis, Rosemullion and St Anthony Heads.

Depending on weather and wind, the vessels will race across Falmouth Bay to a turning mark off the Manacles, then sail up channel towards Fowey and turn again to Falmouth with the finishing line off the Falmouth beaches or Pendennis Point, should conditions allow, at approximately 3.00pm.

Spectator boats are welcome but will be required to keep a wide berth of the racing fleet at all times, especially ahead of the start where the huge vessels will be manoeuvring and requiring substantial sea room.

Richard Mille

While in Falmouth Harbour, the boats will be berthed at Pendennis Marina and the larger vessels moored near Caldy and Frigate buoys. On Wednesday 14 June, the Richard Mille fleet will race from Falmouth to Dartmouth.

Dr William Collier, who has restored multiple historic yachts back to vintage racing condition, is working with the watchmaker and the hosting yacht clubs on this new event. “The Richard Mille Cup strives to recapture the spirit of the pre-war British racing circuit,” he says. “We see these yachts as important cultural artefacts.”

The Richard Mille contenders are invited owners and charterers of yachts built before 1939 or faithful replicas of such yachts, with twelve vessels competing in the Schooner and Cutter categories. The event includes racing and social events organised by the Royal Cornwall and the Royal Dart Yachts Clubs and the Royal Yacht Squadron, before the final race of the Société des Régates du Havre.

Richard Mille Cup

The three-foot-high Richard Mille trophy has been designed by Garrard, jewellers to the British Royal Family for the last 300 years and designers of the America’s Cup trophy 170 years ago.

The cup takes place shortly before the 2023 edition of UK sailing regatta Falmouth Classics (16 and 17 June), with boats arriving into port on 15 June. Earlier this year, the event announced that it would  welcome steam-powered boats for the first time .

This introduction to sailing class is for children aged 7-10 with little to no sailing experience.  Class takes place on Sonar sailboats, with two experienced instructors taking up to eight novice sailors out onto the water each day.  By working together as a team, sailors in this class will learn the fundamentals of on-the-water safety, seamanship and terminology. This includes basic sailing skills, rigging and stowing of all necessary equipment, hoisting and dowsing sails, sail trim and steerage.  At the end of two weeks each eligible student can be evaluated for placement in Opti 1 if interested.  Advancement to Optis is determined solely by the head instructor.  Material may be repeated in successive sessions as students build up their confidence in sailboats.

Learn to sail is offered Monday - Friday 9:00am -12:00pm

Less than a week after losing his father, Willy Robinson’s heroics lifts Scituate boys’ lacrosse to an emotional overtime win over Falmouth

Scituate High's Willy Robinson (No. 14) and teammates celebrate Robinson’s sudden-death goal in an emotional 12-11 overtime victory vs. Falmouth in the Division 3 boys' lacrosse semifinals. Robinson scored a game-high six goals less than a week after losing his father, 50-year-old assistant coach Will Robinson. "He's here with me. I couldn't do it without him," said the junior midfielder.

There was Willy Robinson, calmly strolling toward the sideline with two lacrosse sticks and two bags draped over his right shoulder. It’s a picture that has defined his life in a sport that has made him whole.

Only this wasn’t any other night at the lacrosse field. This time, as the Scituate faithful serenaded him with chants of “Willy! Willy! Willy,” a friend came over to give the junior midfielder the game ball. It was a moment frozen in time, where the sport consoled a grieving family and community.

After losing his father, 50-year-old Scituate assistant Will Robinson on Thursday, Robinson poured in a game-high six goals, including the winner with 3:22 left in overtime. His larger-than-life heroics lifted the Sailors to a thrilling, 12-11, triumph over Falmouth in the Division 3 semifinals Tuesday night at Bridgewater-Raynham High.

The No. 2 Sailors (19-5) are onto the championship, where they’ll face No. 1 Medfield on Friday.

“He’s given me everything I had,” Willy Robinson said of his late father. “He’s here with me. I couldn’t do it without him. He’s smiling right now. He knew it was going to happen.”

Scituate's Willy Robinson fires off a low angle shot as Falmouth High's Christian Sullivan (right) attempts to break up his bid. Robinson scored a game-high six goals, including the winner with 3:22 left in overtime.

The No. 3 Clippers (18-5) kept it tight throughout, but sometimes destiny decides the outcome.

Robinson faked right, spun left like a tornado, and rifled the ball into the net, then he took off as his teammates chased and eventually mobbed him.

“He’s Superman,” Scituate coach Mark Puzzangara said of Robinson, who is committed to Army. “We all know he’s hurting. There’s no question about it, but he has his family at home and he has his family on the field. His energy, we’re feeding off it. We’re doing everything we can to try to win it for him and win it for his dad.”

Scituate's Willy Robinson (14) has his teammates pointed toward the Division 3 state championship after Tuesday's 12-11 overtime win vs. Falmouth in Bridgewater.

The Sailors and Clippers were knotted at 3 through 1, and tied at 6 at halftime, then Scituate took a 10-9 edge through three on a goal from Owen Hofford.

Jackson Falcone and Charlie Hotstetter, who paced the Clippers with three goals apiece, tied it at 11 with 4:53 remaining. Both goalies delivered late in the fourth, then Robinson etched his name in Scituate lore.

“This is amazing,” said Erika Robinson, Willy’s mother and Will’s wife. “My heart was in my throat this entire game. For him to score that winning goal was unbelievable. I don’t have words to tell you how I feel inside right now.”

Erika Robinson thanked the entire community for rallying around her son and family. As of Tuesday night, the GoFundMe page has raised more than $60,000 in five days. The boys’ lacrosse program, which also lost assistant Harold Gerbis earlier this season, has rallied like nothing Puzzangara has ever seen.

“This is what it’s all about,” said a teary-eyed Puzzangara. “This team has been through hell and back. We’re hurting. There’s no question about it. It’s games like this, it’s the community coming out, that helps ease that pain just a little bit.”

Will Robinson, who started the Marshfield lacrosse program in the early 1990s, put a lacrosse stick in Willy’s hands when he gave him a binkie.

Willy said he knew deep down that the shot would go in, because his dad always reminded him that he was built for clutch moments.

Said Erika: “His father would be so proud.”
