The RYA  Yachtmaster Fast Track is a complete full-time training package designed to take you from basic seamanship skills through to Skippering confidently and passing the RYA Yachtmaster Offshore exam.  Ideal for those looking for a career in the professional yachting industry, or leisure sailors wanting to achieve the highest competence quickly. Trafalgar Sailing instructors are highly experienced yachtmaster instructors, specially chosen for their sailing ability, teaching style and character. Gibraltar is a great place to learn to sail and start your sailing career.

What we guarantee on your Fast track Yachtmaster: 1, Accommodation, Food/drinks, bedding, mooring fees, fuel, taxes, safety equipment, books, charts, navigation tools, First aid, VHF course, Day skipper and Yachtmaster Coastal Skipper shore based courses, RYA logbook and Yachtmaster exam fee included. 2, Your yacht will be a Bavaria 38 or similar. 3, Your R.Y.A. Although Gibraltar, Spain and Portugal are sunny and fun, this is not a holiday, it is an intensive 14 week sail training course designed to make you a stronger, safer sailor. If you have the right attitude, you will learn loads from our Instructors. Gibraltar has great wind thanks to the mountain range either side of the Straits, there are tidal waters, busy shipping lanes and a variety of destinations to visit.

This well-rounded programme provides novice students with the opportunity to gain the practical and theoretical training required in to achieve a commercially endorsed RYA/MCA Yachtmaster Coastal Certificate of Competence.

Sailing takes place around the scenic Cape Peninsula and up and down the lower West Coast of South Africa. You will also round the Cape of Good Hope many times, which is a definite sailing milestone, given its often-challenging sailing conditions.

Please note: STCW courses are not included in our course fees and accommodation during theory week is for your own cost.

HIGH CALIBRE INSTRUCTORS Hamble School of Yachting employs only the best teaching staff. All instructors are hand-picked for their ability to communicate, their knowledge and sense of humour! Instructors receive ongoing professional development from the Hamble School of Yachting via a programme delivered by the Chief Instructor. Very few schools adopt this policy.

STRICT INTAKE LIMIT Hamble School of Yachting can offer a choice of different yachts on which to sail and a dedicated teaching block equipped with the latest computer and audio visual technology.

Numbers of students on the PST course are strictly limited to an absolute maximum of ten on each intake. This allows incredibly high quality supervision and monitoring of training and enables students to get much more out of that vital contact time with each instructor.

THE VERY BEST PROGRAMME The programme is purposefully organised in such a way that each week has a clear and dedicated set of goals.

Students are debriefed after each task, and at the end of each week, by the instructor and

Chief Instructor. This enables the school to identify student strengths and weaknesses at a very early stage and ensure a personal action plan is put into place to build up skills accordingly.

AN ALL-ROUND EDUCATION Hamble School of Yachting does not try to enrol its students on a ticket collecting exercise for a bewildering array of different courses. This course is focused and carefully designed to turn out high quality sailors with a good degree of all-round seamanship skills.

The school believes there is no substitute for hands on experience and students spend 72 days of the total 98 days tuition at sea learning the skills of their trade. The weeks spent on practical sailing are carefully divided between skipper development and mileage building to destinations in the English Channel, and “drills and skills” weeks closer to home.

THE HAMBLE TOUCHES Hamble School of Yachting is so committed to delivering the best possible experience that it invites prospective PST students to join the team for a weekend of sailing, free of charge. This gives the opportunity for students to meet school’s friendly faces, see how the school operates and chat to the brilliant instructors about their ambitions. It also allows the team to ensure the course is right for the student. For those with more experience it might be suitable to start at module two or three and this will be assessed over the weekend.

Yachtmaster Coastal Fast Track

The Yachtmaster Coastal Fast-Track in Sydney takes you from novice sailor to RYA Yachtmaster Coastal Certificate of Competence.

Our innovative course programme provides an exhilarating mix of training and a reliable route to certification.

We promise you expert tuition, a stimulating learning environment and a great Australian sailing adventure.

Course programme 

The programme is a package of individual training courses built into a balanced and progressive training schedule. 

Training time is divided between live-aboard periods, day sailing courses and shore-based theory classes. 

Weekends are usually free but we encourage you to join our dinghy sailing and windsurfing classes (at no cost) to develop core sailing skills or join a Flying Fish weekend course as a mate to one of our qualified yacht instructors.

For racing enthusiasts, there is also the chance to go yacht racing with owners at Middle Harbour Yacht Club

Fantastic sailing areas

The course is based in the spectacular setting of the Flying Fish Sail Academy at Middle Harbour Yacht Club, Sydney.

You sail in Sydney Harbour, Australia's favourite yachting playground, cruising past the Opera House and under the famous Sydney Harbour Bridge.

Offshore you explore the New South Wales coast, heading south to Jervis Bay or north to Pittwater, Seal Rocks and Coffs Harbour.

Weather conditions vary from warm sea breezes to cool southerly busters. You will experience magnificent seascapes, dolphins, whales and, of course, flying fish. This is offshore sailing at its best! 

Equipment and instructors 

We operate a fleet of excellent training vessels including Beneteau 40.7 cruiser racers, SV Arctos (a Radford 55 built for a southern ocean circumnavigation) and our luxury yacht Calypso, a state of the art Moody 54 Deck Saloon.

For shore-based training, we have a comfortable waterside classroom equipped with a variety of modern teaching aids and equipment. 

Our team of experienced instructors will guide you through your programme in the friendly and professional style that is the hallmark of Flying Fish.  

• Where to stay ashore

If you don't live in Sydney you will need a place to stay for the duration of your course.

We have limited availability in Flying Fish serviced crew apartments in Manly, staying with other Flying Fish customers on one of Australia's most beautiful beaches. Or you can book your own place.

Before you start

The course is designed for newcomers to sailing and for anyone with previous experience who would like to recap basic skills in a superb sailing environment.

• If you leave the course as a qualified, commercially endorsed Yachtmaster Coastal you will be ready to start work as a skipper.
• Yachtmaster Coastal is a great starting point but operations are limited to 20 miles from port so you will find you need to upgrade to Yachtmaster Offshore quite quickly.
• Check out Yachtmaster Offshore Fast Track for an ab-initio pathway to the Yachtmaster Offshore / Master of Yachts 200 certification.

• Apart from Aussies and Kiwis, everybody traveling to Australia needs to apply in advance for a visa. Don't apply for a student visa. • What happens if I fail the Yachtmaster exams?
• We do our best to make sure that you don't. But if the worst comes to the worst you'll go away with an action plan to complete.  Usually, this involves revising some missing skills or knowledge and then resitting the exam.
• Over 90% of our Yachtmaster candidates pass first time

Learn some tricks of the trade so you can be safe on the race course. Racing with spinnakers is exciting but it also presents new risks. Flying a kite requires the crew to perform a number of tasks in the correct order.

The RYA Coastal Skipper course provides you with the opportunity to develop your seamanship, boat handling and navigation skills offshore by day and night. It is a stepping stone towards the Yachtmaster Certificates of Competence.

This course gives you an overall awareness of the central systems of a marine diesel engine. We teach you how to take simple measures to prevent mechanical breakdown at sea and rectify defects that do not require workshop support.

This course provides intensive training in the practical skills and theoretical knowledge the small boat driver needs. You will learn to drive our rigid inflatable rescue craft.

This is a re-validation course for those who have completed the two-day AS/World Sailing Offshore Safety and Sea Survival course but whose certificates will soon expire.

Course Overview

Sunshine Sailing Australia’s Yachtmaster Offshore Fast Track offers you a reliable and direct route to the RYA/MCA Yachtmaster Offshore qualification.

In this program, you will spend 12 weeks immersed in exciting, supportive and in-depth training and adventures. The qualification and certificate you will earn is valid for use as Master of yachts of up to 200GT (gross tonnes) on commercial and privately registered yachts. In addition, the certificate is a benchmark around the world for commercial skippers and is essential for professional yachting. Whether you are an experienced sailor, a beginner, planning a career in sailing, or achieving a personal goal, this thorough RYA Yachtmaster Fast Track is for you.

Course Details

Course Duration: 3 Months Start and Finish Times:  Start at 9:30am on the Start Date. Minimum Age:  17 years or over. Course Format:  Blended learning in the classroom and on the water. Prerequisites:  None.

Who is this course designed for?

The course is designed for those aspiring to the RYA/MCA Yachtmaster Offshore level of competence. This program will give you the experience, miles and qualifications to gain your commercial endorsement for the MCA Master of Yachts 200GT (gross tonnes) up to 24m. When you’re done, you can cruise the world as a paid skipper in the Superyacht industry, or cruise the world on your own yacht with the confidence and capability of an Offshore Yachtmaster.

What will this course enable you to do?

The Yachtmaster Offshore Certificate of Competence demonstrates that you have the knowledge and ability to the level of an Offshore Yachtmaster. You may do this qualification for personal or professional reasons.

If you want to use this qualification commercially, the RYA Yachtmaster Offshore Certificate of Competence allows you to skipper commercial vessels around the world. You may find work in any of the following professions:

Becoming an RYA Instructor

After completing your RYA Yachtmater Offshore Certificate of Competence with a commercial endorsement, you will be able to undertake the first stage of RYA Instructor training, the RYA Cruising Instructor course. Upon successful completion of the Cruising Instructor training, you will be able to deliver RYA Start Yachting, RYA Competent Crew, and RYA Day Skipper Practical training with an accredited RYA school, such as Sunshine Sailing Australia. The RYA Yachtmaster Fast Track Course includes the following courses in the schedule and the full syllabus contained within each of these:

• Completing the RYA Essentials -Navigation (Online) course prior to the orientation day
• Learn to be an effective member of crew on the RYA Competent Crew course

Our sailing areas include the Sunshine Coast, Brisbane, Moreton Bay, Fraser Island, Great Sandy Straits, and the Whitsunday Islands of the Great Barrier Reef. An excellent base for Yachtmaster training, these areas provide ideal conditions: perfect winds, warm tidal waters, busy shipping lanes and a wide variety of interesting sailing passages. With exotic destinations, these are some of the best sailing grounds in the world!

What qualification do you receive?

At the end of this course, you will be examined for the RYA Yachtmaster Offshore certificate of competence. In addition, you will gain the required supporting qualifications and miles to work as a paid skipper around the world.

RYA Certificates of Competence are some of the most useful and credible of all yachting qualifications. They thoroughly test the skipper’s ability and give you a new level of confidence in your capabilities.

Accommodation

Over the duration of the fast track course there will be many days when you are living aboard the training yacht. On those days you can leave any excess gear in our storage facilities. There are also some days when you will not be living aboard the training vessel.

You will need local accommodation for approximately 30-days throughout the course.  With several weeks of classroom, and local training, you will need to secure accommodation.  Reach out to us, and we can tell you what dates you will need to stay ashore.

Yachtmaster Fast Track Sailing Course Schedule

The RYA Yachtmaster Offshore Fast Track courses start at 1800 on the first Sunday. The detailed day to day schedule is based around the short and long term weather forecast at the time, however we aim to complete the theory and safety elements as early as possible in the course so this can be put into practice at sea. When not at sea the training rooms are available to you for self study and revision. Although this is considered a practical course, there is also a large amount of theory to cover too, in terms of total hours learning the ratio is around 70% Practical, 30% theory.

Fast Track can be a complete course or join at your level

Yachtmaster Sailing School offers a Fast Track for those sailors who already have some experience but little or no formal qualifications.

The Fast Track course is a comprehensive series of training modules covering all certificates in the RYA Sail Cruising and Yachtmaster Scheme as well as short courses in Sea Safety & Survival, MROCP (VHF & HF) Radio Licence and Diesel Engine course.

If you are an experienced sailor or have some qualifications, Yachtmaster Sailing School will go over your existing qualifications and develop a suitable program to help you complete the RYA Yachtmaster certificate.

Port Phillip is a unique sailing area. It’s a very large bay so we have rough weather, tricky sandbars and strong tides all of which will help give you the experience you need.

DO I NEED A MINIMUM MILEAGE AND SEA TIME BEFORE TAKING THIS FAST TRACK COURSE?

There is no minimum sea time requirement or mileage required to start this course. This course will provide the minimum sea time requirement to get you to RYA Coastal Skipper Certificate of Competence (a commercial certificate), but extra sea time is required for the RYA Yachtmaster certificate.

Our Fast Track course will provide you with approx 500 miles and 20 days of sea time and 14 days of classroom theory.

The RYA Yachtmaster certificate requires 50 days and 2,500 miles. The exam for RYA Yachtmaster can be taken once the miles have been accumulated. If you already have 1,500 miles and 30 days logged experience, by completing the Fast Track course you will have the minimum sea time experience to take the RYA Yachtmaster exam.

WHY DO I NEED A RYA/MCA YACHTMASTER CERTIFICATE?

This is the only certificate available in Australia that is recognised worldwide as a commercial ticket and is mandatory for work as a skipper on super yachts.

This certification allows you to work as Captain/Master on private vessels, commercial vessels and super yachts up to 24 metres. Over 24 meters and less than 200gt as Master up to 150nm from safe haven, beyond 150 miles from safe haven you are able to work as Chief Mate.

Note that all Masters and Crew must have the STCW10 short courses to secure work on vessels greater than 24 metres. We do not teach the STCW10 courses. For information on STCW10 courses, please contact the Australian Maritime College in Launceston, Tasmania on 03 6335 4711.

The RYA Yachtmaster exam is conducted on the water by an independent examiner. Taking part in or completing the Fast Track course does not give a guarantee of passing the exam.

The RYA Yachtmaster certificate requires a high standard of seamanship and knowledge. You will need to do a considerable amount of work/study outside classroom and sailing hours.

FOR SAILING

Wear clothes suitable for the season and rubber soled shoes, preferably with a white or light coloured sole. A cap, sunglasses, bottle of water and sun screen are also a good idea. You will also need change of clothes, toilet kit, sleeping bag and any special medicine you may require packed in a flexible soft bag. We provide you with wet weather gear (with the exception of boots) if required.

“Endeavour Sailing’s unique Yachtmaster Fast Track  Sail Training Programme is a full-time training package which will take you from an absolute beginner to Yachtmaster Offshore in 16 weeks.

At Endeavour Sailing we carefully choose our instructors, for their experience, their ability to teach, their patience and their ability to make each day fun.

The yachts we use are owned by us and our modern, well equipped, clean and comfortable.

With a dedicated shore side training room & offices, wifi access and world reclaimed marina facilities you will find the whole experience second to none (not to mention the weather – all year round sunshine!)

The RYA Yachtmaster exam, certificate is not issued by us, but via the RYA/MCA direct.

We have also included a one week gap in the middle to give you some respite and you will find the course to be very much “eat, sleep, sail and repeat”, some time out is greatly appreciated.

All your learning will be monitored with daily and weekly debriefs which will be passed from instructor to instructor… having different instructors is a great thing as we all learn differently and having different styles of teaching and different approaches to skippering. We also mix crew so you get to deal with and lead unknown crew which really pushes your skippering and communication skills, a key thing the examiner will be looking for during your exam.

The area: We have a fantastic training ground, with excellent sailing conditions guaranteeing continuous sailing day after day. This is why many international professional sportspersons and teams come here year after year for their training. With wind acceleration zones we can also push your skills with heavy weather training.

All your accommodation is provided, except for the week gap, on board our boats, so no need to find alternative accommodation for the theory weeks. Our classroom is just 2 minutes from the boat and you will be issued with a key so you can access it 24 hours a day.

During the mile builders you will be in charge. There is an instructor on board for insurance purposes, and you will have to plan to achieve the mileage required, but the planning and running the week(s) is up to you.

Yachtmaster Fast Track Course

The Yachtmaster Fast Track course is designed for those in a big hurry to get qualified as an ISSA Offshore Skipper and then after gaining a further 2000NM experience one is ready to be assessed for Yachtmaster Offshore.

This  course is aimed at someone who wants to become a Yacht Master in the shortest time possible.  The Fast Track course is designed to start at a beginner level. The student learns to become a competent crew, a vhf radio operator , and an inshore skipper  while gaining mileage, skills and experience over a four to six month period.

Coastal cruising experiences are vital. Its necessary to collect 800- 1000NM and to attend the final Offshore Skipper course and you can be assessed as a YMO skipper when you have completed 3000NM of experience.  The yacht master fast track course teaches you how to sail, how to crew, how to navigate, how to be safe; indeed all you will need to know to be a skipper. The course also provides the opportunity to build the experience you need to take that knowledge and build your skills to the required level. The Offshore Skipper course ensures that there are no gaps in your competences.

Do you have what it takes to skipper a yacht in all weather conditions? - If you have it, we'll identify it and we'll get you to the level needed to pass both practical and theory exams. We will ensure you can run a yacht at night, in a squall or storm, in light winds, when you lose your engine, or in worst case scenarios - a man overboard situation / night or day. Our sailing yachts are ocean going capable and we design the course to continually challenge you and encourage your ability to command and run a sailing yacht. Previous experience :  Nothing essential, but we suggest that you have a little experience as this is a major commitment. and you really want to know that you're going to like it. Duration : 4-6 months Qualifications: ISSA Offshore Skipper. (along the way you'll also earn Inshore Skipper, RIB Skipper, VHF Radio operator) What's included : Safety equipment, Instruction, Yacht/RIBs, Bottled Water, Fuel and Insurance What's Optional :  Sailing Gloves, SiA T shirts, SiA Caps and Log Book What's required :  Waterproof bag. Sun protection. Sun hat. Shorts that cover the knees when sitting are best. Footwear for on-board tennis shoes / trainers / Crocs. Some people like to use gloves. Lightweight wet weather clothing.

RYA Competent Crew Courses start every Monday throughout the year. Learn to sail on large modern yachts with our fully inclusive sailing package. Full board Monday to Friday, Palamos-Marina-Training-Spainwith cabins and berths available from the Sunday night, and on the Friday following your course. We offer a selection of yachts for your comfort and enjoyment, large 48 footers for distance sailing and added comfort. You can choose to sail with us from Barcelona Palamos on any of our charter yachts Beneteau 40 and 43 read all about them at our charter page. New Fountaine Pajot Lucia 40 for 2019 and a new 2021 Jeanneau 440!

RYA Courses (Sail) are half board from Barcelona Palamos and include own berth & fresh bedding! Breakfast and Lunch aboard.

On board provisions include:- Breakfasts. Cereals, eggs, croissants, fruit, tea, coffee. Lunches. Fresh salads, sandwiches, cold meats, cheeses, snacks. Yachts have a weekly provision of vegetables and pulses, tinned tuna, and basic cooking ingredients. Our 48 foot yachts have fridges and freezers. We do our best to cater for alternative dietary requirements, students are free to purchase additional personal produce. BOS RYA Fast Track 14 week and Fast Track Yachtmaster 15 week Courses are Full Board.

Hi Susie, it's Charlie Hale, just checking in to see if you are all  ok  and to let you know  I just got my first job  as a stew, I'm starting beginning of May!  Thank you  for all of your advice and I'm still going for deckhand but I need to get a season of doing anything first!

Blue Oyster Sailing School is the best intense week I've had . I paid for the prep week and offshore yacht master exam after I failed it twice already. The first day I had help getting to know my crew and the boat which was step by step instruction on how to do the stuff I got wrong on the previous 2 exams. Through the week my Instructor started getting me to understand what it takes to be a skipper and how to control and implement my crew in the best way possible. This helped me so much as this is one of the main things I needed help with. My exam was then organised and I was ready to take it.

I had food prepared for me everyday  by Susie and it was perfect as she did good quantities which meant I wasn't worried about food ever. The crew for my exam was awesome as well they were doing their different courses, like Fast Track YM and Day Skipper. This also helped as it gave me the responsibility as skipper to get my crew working the way I wanted which in turn came across on the exam. So all in all I had a fantastic week with some great people and I became a RYA Yachtmaster offshore YM also commercially endorsed (as they signed me in to get the  PPR course  done on the day after my YM exam as well).  Can't recommend this company enough.

Course requirements

Fastrackers - you must come with your own life jacket and harness, waterproofs, deck shoes, Breton / Portland plotter or similar, dividers, notepads and pencils. Please phone for advice before purchasing expensive items.

Yachtmaster Preparation

All students are ready to be prepared for the Yachtmaster Exam. The weeks training will be intense, focusing on the weaker points to ensure you are well above the standard required. We coach you at your pace so you benefit from one-to-one coaching. And finally the Big Day!
