On Board 49m M/Y Ocean Z with Capt. Billy Lockhart

ocean z super yacht

Claire Griffiths is  Dockwalk ’s contributing editor in the Mediterranean. She fled to the sunny south of France from Edinburgh, Scotland, UK. Claire has a background in journalism for national and regional UK press and a career in political and corporate PR prior to that. Capt. Billy Lockhart has always loved pressing buttons and messing around on boats. Throw his extrovert personality into the mix, and he was born to be a yacht captain. He began his career running the dive department on cruise ships, where he also met his wife, the casino bank manager on board.

“Cruise ships go to all the same places as the superyachts, and my wife and I watched the yacht crew go by and we said to ourselves, ‘Now that is what we should be doing!’” So on December 5, 2000, they drove from Miami to Fort Lauderdale and dockwalked. “I had enough sea time to do my 100-ton license and my wife started out as a stew,” Lockhart says.

Lockhart’s first captain position was for the owners of NASCAR, and he stayed 15 years. “All of our boats were called M/Y Finish Line . We went through a dozen different boats and the last one we built from scratch at Trinity,” he says. “In 2014, we flew to Amsterdam for the World Superyacht Awards and won our category.”

This year, M/Y Ocean Z was a finalist in the World Superyacht Awards. This steel-hulled, full-displacement, true bluewater superyacht was delivered in May 2022. “ Ocean Z is a very interesting boat because it was built on spec,” Lockhart says. “We made the contract rather late, so it was a marathon sprint from start to finish, getting the boat finished and delivered. We put a lot of time and effort into making sure that everything we had control over was done to the highest level of perfection as well as customized to the way the owner likes to enjoy yachting.”

A good deal of effort was put into the loose furniture layout, the deck exterior, and the interior soft goods. In doing so, Lockhart reckons they were able to imprint a great “personality” onto an already great boat. “Reymond Langton Design did a very good job of putting together a very nice high-end interior, but also monochromatic, which is appropriate when what you are doing is trying to sell the boat to a future client and you want that boat to be as appealing to as broad a market as possible. And it was our job to come in and put our personality on it and it came out very nicely.”

The yacht has already completed two Atlantic crossings and more than 15,000 miles in the first year. “She just runs like a dream, rides like a dream,” Lockhart says. “We are not remotely the biggest in the Mediterranean, but we are easily the prettiest!”

Lockhart is particularly impressed by the boat’s use of space as every cranny is used and enjoyed. “Typically, on these boats you have areas where people just don’t go — that’s not the case here, every area has its own appeal, its own function, its own versatility, from the beach club to the sun deck, to the wheelhouse deck aft. They are all very inviting.”

The yacht has a traditional layout. The only unorthodox element is the tender bay on the bridge deck forward of the pilothouse. “That,” says Lockhart, “gives you a wholly dedicated space aft, which was a new feature for us. It took a while to figure out what that space meant for us.” It now has various functions: a gym for parents, a “den” for the teenage girls, and at anchor, it’s a beautiful beach club. “We decided toy-storage wise that anything visible needed to look like a high-end retail showroom,” he says. The team opted for a cantilever umbrella and large daybed on the sun deck.

“I’m very happy with her seaworthiness,” Lockhart says. “We’ve done two crossings with this boat and it’s definitely a luxury not to have to put a lot of concern into things like weather. We try to avoid getting beaten up by it — I’ve had more than enough of that — but on board Ocean Z , if you’ve got to go, you can go.”

Machinery wise, the systems meet expected standards and Lockhart considers it a very well put together boat, although if he had written the spec, he would have done it a bit differently here and there. “The layout for crew duties is fine: the engine room is compact but accessible, the stew pantry is not huge but completely functional, the galley has a nice space, and there is plenty of cold storage,” Capt. Lockhart says. “The exterior decks are very large and, despite the fact there’s very little built-in furniture, there’s still plenty of storage for bosun’s stuff, and so on. Crew accommodation is nicely outfitted, the sound privacy is fantastic — you can’t hear anything on the other side of the door.”

Eastern Med is the itinerary this summer; Scandinavia and Alaska beckon for future cruise, for the yacht plans to do everything but Zzzzz.

10 Superyacht Concepts With Outrageous Features, From an 560-Foot Track to a Private Marina

Among the most outrageous yachts ever built, Sailing Yacht A and Yas are top of the list. The polarizing designs are defined by their exteriors— A for its fortress aesthetic and the former navy frigate Yas for its dolphin-like appearance. Love them or loathe them, they break from conventional yacht design and show what can be done with a little fresh thinking. That’s exactly what concepts are intended to do, and some of the world’s most outrageous examples take it to the extreme.

“Yacht concepts drive human evolution in maritime adventure,” says Micca Ferrero, owner of ICON Yachts . “It is one of the oldest and purest forms of work, as humans have been preparing to take to the sea for centuries in search of a better world. Each concept carries a small part of our future at sea.”

But the concepts have gone beyond simple sea vessels. From the Airyacht, with its detachable upper blimp structure, to U-Boat Worx’s Nautilus that can travel underwater at 10 knots, superyachts are no longer limited to the surface. Shape, size, amenities and propulsion are all up for grabs, and some of the most eyebrow-raising examples pave the way for the yachts of tomorrow.

Here are 10 of our favorite outrageous yacht concepts ever launched.

Pangeos — The World’s Largest Floating Structure

Italian design studio Lazzarini is known for its far-fetched ideas, which include a swan-shaped yacht and floating seaports. Pangeos is its interpretation of the world’s largest floating structure. The 1,800-foot-long “terayacht” (which also measures 2,000 feet across at its widest point) is named after Pangea, a supercontinent that existed 335 million years ago. This Pangea is estimated to accommodate 60,000 guests. The premise is an emissions-free city that can sail around the world. Designed in the shape of a giant turtle clad in solar panels, the concept includes multiple structures with a rooftop shopping mall, restaurants, and houses. There are also gardens, pools, and a large beach club, as well as helipads, hangars and marinas to store helicopters, toys, and tenders. Pangeos is powered by nine electric motors of 16,800 hp each, with the “wings” drawing more power from the waves and wind. Lazzarini estimates the build cost would be $8 billion.

VY.01 — Standout Feature: Indoor Garden

Gardens and superyachts don’t typically mix. It can be challenging to keep plants alive at sea since gardening requires substantial care and resources. But that didn’t stop German architects 3deluxe from penning VY.01 , a low carbon-emission superyacht concept with a greenhouse and vegetable garden. Billed as a “paradisiacal biotope,” the concept catamaran focuses on onboard self-sufficiency. In addition to a hydrogen fuel-cell system and electric propulsion, the vessel has solar panels on the rooftop to generate clean energy for the seawater desalination system that provides water for the plants. Other features include large deck spaces, open-plan living, a saltwater pool, and a mini marina for tenders and toys.

Domus — Standout Feature: An Experimental Open Plan Layout

This 131-foot-long solar sailing trimaran by Rob Doyle Design and Van Geest has 8,500 square feet of interior space, more than double the volume of other yachts with similar lengths. Domus , meaning a single-story home divided into two parts, is defined by a flat and wide superstructure, containing multiple guest areas that lead to a central atrium. The full-beam design is spread across two decks, with two owner’s suites that each have adjoining salons. There is also a cinema, gym, spa, and pool. When sailing, Domus will be able to heel at an angle of two degrees to reduce drag while also guaranteeing a comfortable guest experience with minimal rolling. It also uses a combination of solar power, hydro-regeneration technology, and hydrogen fuel cells for unlimited range and zero emissions. If that’s not enough, it’s fitted with a sail for extra wind power.

EXPV — Standout Feature: Floating Glass Walkway Connecting Two Deckhouses

Over the years, Feadship has developed engineered yacht concepts that not only bring something new to yacht design, but also are ready to be built. The 285-foot EXPV , which the Dutch yard developed in collaboration with British studio Harrison Eidsgaard, is an explorer with a difference. The vessel has two deckhouses connected by a suspended glass walkway that separates the private owner’s quarters from the guest areas. The full-beam owner’s apartment, measuring 44 feet across, has an observation room, a helideck, and a private foredeck sun lounge. The other six guest cabins face the sea. On the lower deck, the beach club has folding platforms on both sides, an indoor swimming pool, and a skylight. A tender deck is located directly below. The mast holds a two-person pod that travels above the radar domes for exceptional views. The yacht also has hybrid diesel-electric propulsion.

Cantharus — Standout Feature: Underwater Lounge

Cantharus is about being immersed in nature. American designer Darin Osborne’s Cantharus is a vessel with unrestricted views of the ocean, above and below deck, to encourage guests to be at one with their surroundings. The 226-foot concept has an underwater lounge and office amidship that converts into an owner’s cabin. The space holds a piano, formal dining table, and entertainment system. More panoramic vistas are on the upper bridge. On the main deck aft, there is a Jacuzzi that doubles as a stage, and a bar and DJ booth. At night, underwater lights illuminate the ocean, shining a spotlight on the behemoths of the deep.

Galileo² — Standout Feature: A Private Marina

Described as the “catamaran that costs $500 billion to build,” the 656-foot Galileo² stretches the imagination in all directions. German naval architects Beiderbeck Designs, whose most notable builds include the 305-foot Eos and 233-foot Skat , conceived the multihull during the pandemic. It was clearly ahead of its time. Equipped with a methanol powerplant, it also has a 19,000-nautical-mile range, a retractable restaurant, and a 262-foot pier for the 38 guests to take walks at sea. Along with 75 crew, the yacht has a private marina with 260 feet of dock space—enough for 25 boats, submersibles, and toys. Other key features include an outdoor cinema, a hospital, and an Olympic-sized swimming pool.

Phoenicia — Standout Feature: Articulated Helipad

Igor Lobanov’s sailing concept Phoenicia catches the eye with a reverse bow, a raised bowsprit, and an Arabian-inspired cutout on the superstructure that casts shadows across the yacht’s exterior decks. Even more dramatic are the masts on the main deck behind a glass-walled gallery. The yacht, a bridge between old and new, fuses a large traditional sail rig with an articulated helipad that unfolds from the roof of the owner’s suite. At night, 33 laser lights shine into the water, giving the impression that the yacht has two decks of oars.

Project L — Standout Feature: An Underwater Glass-Encased Owner’s Suite

French designer Thierry Gauguin is a long-time collaborator of Philippe Starck, with projects that include Venus , the 260-foot Feadship built for Steve Jobs. His ultra-modern 394-foot concept Project L is his first solo design. Conceived for long, oceangoing passages with diesel-electric propulsion, it is fitted out with a glass-encased underwater owner’s suite at the bow. The bullet-like exterior blends the naval architecture of a sailing vessel with motoryacht convenience. Outdoor deck areas are limited to the small sun deck and an extendable beach club at the stern, both of which have pools. Yet the design also includes a dinghy bay, a heliport, a car garage, and even an underwater escape pod for Bond-like exits.

Ocean Odyssey — Standout Feature: A 590-Foot Running Track

Penned by Italian designer Marco Casali as part of his 2020 “Owner for a Day” initiative, the 360-foot Ocean Odyssey is a floating hub of operations based on features requested by a yachting journalist. The vessel is defined by a two-level glass superstructure, which conceals a high-tech media center and a signature 590-foot running track. Its two-level stern works as a swimming pool (with lounges) on the upper-level beach club), as well as a private port to accommodate a custom 50-foot tender in a floating slip. More seating is found on the foredeck and bridge deck, while a helipad on the top deck allows for easy guest transfer anywhere in the world.

Protean 95 — Standout Feature: An Adaptive Platform

The 312-foot Protean 95 is all about flexibility. Designed by Dutch studio CBSPRO Maritime to meet a variety of owners’ needs, it can be used as a support vessel, an explorer yacht, or a mothership for sportfishing tournaments and sailing regattas. The hybrid electric yacht can also serve as a floating laboratory and research vessel for oceanographic expeditions, helped by its 8,000-nautical-mile range. The open aft deck is a multifaceted heli-facility that can accommodate an 18-passenger helicopter. It also has a helipad, under-deck equipment hangar, and refueling area, as well as space for a submersible, multiple tenders and other pleasure craft. Amenities for the 20 guests include a spa, gym, cinema, and pool.

Tiger mosquitos, Asian hornets and bed bugs: What climate change means for Europe’s ‘pest demographics’ haunting the Paris Olympics

Paris (France) on May 17, 2020: statue in 'Place du Trocadero' square with a protective mask against Coronavirus, Covid19, and the Eiffel Tower in the background.

About an hour outside Vienna, the Penny Markt in Krems an der Donau prides itself on two things: low, low prices, and the provenance of its meat and fresh produce. But one mild August day last year, shoppers rummaging for a locally-sourced bargain found a rather more exotic, if less welcome, surprise, lurking amid the banana crates.

The culprit was a stowaway Brazilian Wandering Spider, an 11cm black and red arachnid with a bite that causes convulsions, hypothermia, death and—if you’re of the male persuasion—a particularly painful case of uncontrolled erections. You can imagine the shock.

The store shut for precautionary disinfection, and the spider got away, never to be heard from again. But it’s hardly the only invasive creepy crawly to make its way into European tabloids lately.

France has acquired an unfortunate pre-Olympic reputation for rampant bed bug infestations, with Paris deputy mayor Emmanuel Grégoire warning people “no one is safe. You can catch them anywhere,” and reports of the bloodsuckers on the Eurostar causing panic in London.

Tiger mosquitoes, which can carry Dengue and Zika, have also been seen around the country, leading Paris authorities to bring in entomologist ‘detectives’ to track down their breeding spots.

The Turkish pharmaceutical industry, meanwhile, is eyeing Europe more broadly as an exciting new export market for scorpion antivenom .

A medical lab staff holds a scorpion at a vaccine company in Adiyaman province of Turkey.

Is climate change to blame for this apparent arthropodal invasion?

The reality is rather less apocalyptic than the headlines suggest, says Dr Matt Green, principal entomologist at UK-based global pest control company Rentokil Initial, which has operations across the continent.

We’re nowhere close to Dengue becoming endemic. Reports of French bed bugs rose largely because people saw horror headlines and started looking under their mattresses. And if we are generally seeing more invasive species it’s mostly not due to rising temperatures.

“I’m often asked how climate change is affecting our business. Well, given that humans have already transported all the major pests to pretty much every country, and certainly every major human center of activity, not as much as you might think,” Green tells Fortune .

The good news is that those worrying about bumping into errant Brazilian Wandering Spiders can relax.

Most species need more than a mere rise in temperatures to make a home in new and very different ecosystems. For example, the Sheerness docks near London have had a population of 10,000 yellow scorpions for centuries , since merchant ships brought them from continental Europe, but these harmless critters haven’t spread because conditions aren’t right.

What climate change is doing to Europe’s pest population

This is not to say climate change isn’t affecting Europe’s pest profile.

Termites—long a problem in Mediterranean countries—are munching their way into Northern Europe with rising temperatures, though the relative lack of timber buildings means they’re unlikely to cause widespread economic harm there.

Aedes mosquitoes—the genus which includes tiger mosquitoes—are well established in Italy, and getting there in France, which means countries like Switzerland are unlikely to be spared.

“Europe is already seeing how climate change is creating more favorable conditions for invasive mosquitoes to spread into previously unaffected areas,” European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control director Andrea Ammon told the BBC.

Fortunately, these are not the kind that carry malaria—that’s the Anopheles , which is unlikely to spread into Europe due to the absence of large bodies of standing water that—unlike Aedes —it needs to breed.

Asian hornets in Europe are significant predators of bees.

The same can’t be said for Asian hornets which, depending on where you live, could soon be coming to a picnic near you. “They’re moving through France pretty easily, and there have been instances of them overwintering in the U.K., which means we’ve probably got these now, so make your peace with it,” Green says.

Then there are bed bugs. Even before the recent surge, infestations were costing the French economy €230 million ($246 million) annually, according to health agency Anses . Callouts can set back hotels thousands of dollars in treatments and lost income, and could create hysteria and panic through the Paris Olympics.

A pest control worker displays a photograph of a bed bug infestation in Paris, France.

These six-legged vampires may have been there all along, but they do prefer warmer weather.

“When the temperature inside your house is 25 to 26 degrees Celsius (77 to 78.8 Fahrenheit), it takes only five days for the bed bug eggs to hatch. In normal conditions, when the temperature is around 20 degrees Celsius, it takes 10 days,” entomologist and National Institute for the Study and Fight Against Bedbugs cofounder Jean-Michel Bérenger told Wired during the height of the panic last year

How Europe’s pests are changing beyond climate change

Whether helped by rising temperatures or not, the pests we’re likely to see more of are the ones that are best adapted to humans and our behavior—and it is our behavior that is helping them to spread.

In rural settings this is most often through monocultural agriculture, though sometimes all it takes is a penchant for importing non-native plants.

The oak processionary moth—a species endemic to Southern Europe, which damages forests and releases hairs that can irritate skin, eyes and airways— established a foothold in the U.K. in the 2000s, when an oak was shipped from Europe. Ironically, it happened very close to the Royal Botanical Gardens at Kew, where authorities monitor such things.

The web of the oak processionary moth on the bark of an oak tree.

It’s the urban pests you’re more likely to notice, however.

Rats, mice, cockroaches and the like all share characteristics that make them ideally suited to living intimately with humans, whether we want them to or not. They’re small, capable of crawling through tight spaces, generally dark and nocturnal, making them hard to spot. Crucially, they’re also omnivorous.

“They’re massively flexible, so they won’t care about one or two degrees [change in temperature]. They’re already living in air conditioned buildings,” says Rentokil’s Green. “Some moths in warehouses barely fly these days. They don’t have to. They’ve just been living in a world full of food, getting moved around by humans. It’s a hell of a life.”

Sometimes it’s a well-intentioned or necessary change in human behavior that helps urban pests to proliferate.

Media frenzy aside, bed bug populations did rapidly increase around the world in the early 21st century. In Australia , the rise was between 500% and 4,500%; in New York City, bed bug complaints to the council jumped from 537 in 2004 to 10,985 in 2009, although they have since dropped .

Entomologists attribute the resurgence to the end of the DDT era—the infamous insecticide dramatically cut global insect pest numbers in the mid to late 20th century, before serious environmental and health concerns ended its use, and species started to develop resistance. In essence, we’re returning to historical norms from a period of unusually low insect activity.

Don’t expect this to change. Although the pest control industry is deploying increasingly sophisticated monitoring strategies and ‘physical’ interventions, such as steam cleaning rooms with bed bugs, moving away from chemical controls means we lose what had been a powerful weapon against infestation.

Something similar may be about to happen with rats, at least in Europe, where regulators are taking an increasingly dim view on the use of anticoagulant rodenticides.

This may be for good reasons, but it has pest controllers nervous. As one put it off the record, “there’s a whole generation of pest controllers that have been trained to put rat poison into bait boxes. If you take that away from the market, what do you have left? To quote Aliens , what are we supposed to use, harsh language?”

Humanity has made many species extinct, mostly unintentionally, and it is continuing to do so. The species that at least some of us would like less of, however, have proven stubbornly resilient. Almost by definition, pests thrive when we do.

So what can we expect? In Europe, climate change and human activity are unlikely to make lethal spiders a regular part of grocery shopping, or to bring about tropical levels of mosquito-borne diseases.

But they will alter the populations of fauna we share our environment with. Get used to Aedes and Asian hornets; be vigilant for rats and bed bugs.

What perhaps will change the most, though, is our expectation of what pest control means. With the spray-it-first-ask-questions-later approach firmly consigned to the history books, eliminating pests at first appearance may end up being remembered as a very 20th century idea.
