$75 million yacht owned by tech billionaire spotted in San Francisco Bay
Some people arrive in the Bay Area by car or plane. Others, like Whatsapp co-founder Jan Koum , make larger waves.
The Ukraine-born billionaire’s superyacht was spotted in the San Francisco Bay on Tuesday, with its presence confirmed by ship-tracking website MarineTraffic.org . It’s a monstrous ride: Named “Mogambo,” the custom-built ship is more than 240 feet long and sold to Koum for $75 million in 2012, Luxury Launches reported.
A 2022 article said the yacht holds 17 crew members after upgrades to the ship’s interior. The boat can also sleep up to a dozen guests, and goes almost 20 miles-per-hour at top speed. Per a yacht-chartering website , there’s an onboard elevator and a swimming pool, plus several “toys” available for use, including four jet-skis. The site says the yacht is available for charter — just 600,000 euros a week! — in various Caribbean locales.
For now, “Mogambo” is floating between San Francisco and Oakland. Koum, whose messaging company sold to Facebook in 2014 for $19 billion, has strong ties across the Bay Area. He spent millions of dollars assembling a five-property compound in Atherton in the 2010s, Variety reported, and recently donated $1 million to bring a light system back to the Bay Bridge, as SFGATE learned earlier this month.
Koum is also bringing his thick wallet into local politics, after staying out of campaign finance records for San Francisco’s 2020 and 2022 elections. In November, Koum donated a whopping $250,000 to Levi Strauss heir Daniel Lurie’s campaign for mayor, per a filing by the political action committee, Believe in SF, Lurie for Mayor 2024. The PAC has already paid for pro-Lurie billboards and mailers in the city, some of which bear Koum’s name.
The PAC’s filing listed Koum’s location as Santa Clara, and his occupation as “retired.”

On Tuesday the 30th of March 2010 Nobiskrug launched the newly finished hull of their 74m motor yacht Mogambo – hull number 782 from the shipyard. The finished hull of the yacht ran smoothly from the slipway into the River Eider within a few seconds.
Nobiskrug launches 74 m superyacht Mogambo
Presently, the 74 m superyacht Mogambo is to be moored at Nobiskrug’s pier in Germany. She will then be moved into the 160 m superyacht hall for her full interior outfitting, as well as the filling and final top-coating of the hull and superstructure. Delivery of the motor yacht Mogambo to her owner is planned for later in 2011, after sea trials.
Nobiskrug of Germany is currently building five significant mega yachts. A couple of the company’s more recent success are motor yachts Triple Seven and SIREN.
During yacht Mogambo’s launching ceremony an old tradition was followed. This consisted of the serving up of a good hearty soup in the shipbuilding hall for all the employees and subcontractors involved in the new build. Nobiskrug’s Managing Directors and the Project Manager, Mr Mark Velthaus, as well as the Owner’s Representative expressed their thanks for the trustful and successful cooperation in the building of the yacht.

Superyacht Mogambo delivered by Nobiskrug
Launched in October 2011, the superyacht Mogambo (hull 782) was finally delivered yesterday.
Based on the same platform as Siren and Sapphire , Mogambo has a length of 73.55 metres, but her smoother lines were designed by Reymond Langton Design. The London-based office is also responsible for the interior. Her general profile and original paint scheme make Mogambo one of the sleeker yachts launched in 2011. Few specifications are known for the moment, but her layout is believed to accommodate 12 guests in a master and five double cabins. On the technical side, twin MTU engines will give her a cruising speed of at least 14 knots.
Mogambo will shortly arrive in Kristansand, Norway - usually the first refuelling stop for yachts delivered in Northern Europe.
Mogambo's sistership Graffiti (hull 783) will be also delivered very soon.

‘Harrods owner Mohamed Al Fayed was a monster and worse than Jimmy Savile’
Lawyers representing women who claim to have been sexually assaulted by former Harrods owner Mohamed Al Fayed have described the case as containing "some of the most horrific elements" of those including Jimmy Savile , Jeffrey Epstein and Harvey Weinstein .
More than 20 women have accused Al Fayed of sexual assault , including rape.
No charges were brought against Al Fayed, who died in 2023.
Issuing an apology, Harrods’ current owners said they are appalled by the allegations of abuse perpetrated by Al Fayed and say that during this time they “failed employees who were his victims”.
They added: “While we cannot undo the past, we have been determined to do the right thing as an organisation.”

1,000 rounds of ammunition and fireworks were onboard yacht that burned in Marina del Rey: Owner
MARINA DEL REY, Calif. (KABC) -- The owner of a luxury yacht that erupted in flames and sank in Marina del Rey said 1,000 rounds of "unspent ammunition and fireworks" were onboard the vessel, according to fire officials.
The Los Angeles County Fire Department provided an update on the incident in a social media post Thursday morning.
The fire was reported shortly after 8:30 p.m. Wednesday at 211 Basin A, where flames engulfed the multi-level, 100-foot boat, the agency said.
Residents in the area said they heard multiple explosions resonating throughout the harbor as yacht was consumed by flames. Fire officials said two people were able to get off the boat uninjured.
Fire crews poured water onto the burning vessel, which later sank into the harbor.
An environmental hazard team was expected to arrive in Marina del Rey Thursday to assist with the cleanup of the burned vessel.
A United States Coast Guard Incident Management Team from Sector Los Angeles-Long Beach is monitoring the cleanup efforts, according to the Coast Guard, which said that the yacht "caught fire and discharged red-dye diesel."
"The fire did not appear to damage any other vessels in the harbor," the USCG said in a statement Thursday. "The Coast Guard is working with Patriot Environmental Services and Clean Harbors organizations to contain and recover the discharge from the yacht."
The yacht's fuel capacity was reported to be 6,000 gallons, according to the Coast Guard. Crews from California Department of Fish and Wildlife's Office of Spill Prevention and Response and the L.A. County Sheriff's Department are also assisting in the efforts.
The Oiled Wildlife Care Network was also notified and was on standby for wildlife response. "No observations of oiled wildlife have been reported at this time," the Coast Guard said Thursday morning. "For your safety and the safety of the animals, do not attempt to capture oiled animals." Witnesses were urged to report oiled wildlife to (877) 823-6926.
