Editor’s Letter

For me, that sentence sums up the true spirit of those pulling on their sea boots for the 2019 Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht Race. It was something John told me on the eve of the 1997 race when I asked him why sailors subject themselves to the rigours of one of the toughest of ocean races.

In no particular order, you can be shivering from cold, exhausted, sick, or nursing a niggling injury or cut inflicted in the first few frenetic hours. Sometimes all of the above.

About to embark on his 35th or 36th trip south, The Fish (as he was known), was a noted raconteur with a vast store of stories about fellow yachties, and himself. He was a much-loved and respected skipper, and was in that revered category sailors refer to as a “real seaman”; someone you want next to you in a storm.

For me John Benetto, Roger Hickman, along with Don Mickleborough, all of whom I have had the great pleasure of meeting and getting to know a little, reflected the extraordinary cast of characters the Hobart has attracted over its colourful history since 1945.

This special summer racing issue of Sails incorporates our comprehensive guide to the 75th Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht Race. As we go to print, the biggest fleet in nearly 25 years will have assembled from all over Australia and many of the top sailing nations, including France, the UK and the USA. In Boat Notes, you’ll find the stats and profile of each of the 160 plus entries in the great race.

Race-winning designer Andy Dovell shares his thoughts on the influences that have shaped the real stars of the race: those magnificent creations in successive eras of wood, fibreglass and carbon that inspire loyalty and deep affection in their owners and crews.

We also examine the technology infused into the latest foiling IMOCA 60s, the class that’s shaping the future of offshore sailing. Apivia , showing an impressive turn of speed on our cover, beat home her rivals in the first major hit-out for the new crop of appendage-laden boats in the 4,000-mile Jacques Vabre race in October 2018.

Anyone who has logged any offshore miles over the past couple of years can testify to the toxic tide of plastic washing up in places like the Cocos Keeling Islands. We, as sailors, can and should do something about curbing or stopping altogether our contribution to the flow of single-use plastic into the ocean. In this issue, Dee Caffari suggests practical ways we can do this. And, if you are heading out on the blue this summer, check-out Jack O’Rourke’s assessment of some of the gear you’ll need.

On Boxing Day, I’ll be joining the around 1800 sailors setting off for the 75th anniversary of what’s become an icon of world yachting. On behalf of them, I thank the host clubs, the Cruising Yacht Club of Australia and the Royal Yacht Club of Tasmania; the safety and rescue services who will be keeping a protective eye on us; the volunteers who always manage a warm welcome; and Rolex for continuing to support this unique sporting endeavour.

Good luck, stay safe, and see you in Hobart.

Scott’s love of the ocean started very early aboard a succession of family yachts, including Barbarian,   which raced in the 1974 and 1975 Sydney Hobart Yacht Races.

After graduating through the dinghy ranks, he won his first spot on a crew in the great race in 1987. Nearly three decades on, he’s lining-up for his thirteenth trip south.

Scott has spent nearly 25 years as a broadcast journalist, including as a business reporter at the ABC. He combines journalistic acumen with his knowledge the marine industry, garnered from involvement in his family’s business as dealers of several brands of well known motor yachts.

He rejects any prejudices aligned to power or sail, preferring to welcome all those who venture out on the sea as souls willing to venture beyond the far horizon – preferably with an EPIRBS and a good watermaker.

Scott is a passionate advocate for the protection of the unique marine environments that encompass our planet, and the creatures inhabiting them that are our responsibility.

Elica Group announces launch of luxury power catamaran brand Omaya Yachts

The OMAYA 50.

Bulgarian family owned business, Elica Group, has announced the launch of its luxury power catamaran brand Omaya Yachts, with its first model, the OMAYA 50, hitting the water this summer.  With the group’s 30 years of experience in manufacturing, a focus on quality, transparency and a hunger for manufacturing best-in-class yachts, the next phase of corporate growth points to Elica Yard. Situated on the banks of the Danube and where Omaya’s yachts are created, the yard is aiming to lead the manufacture of luxury power catamarans for the private and charter markets.

Kaloyan Radulov.

Kaloyan Radulov, co-founder and CEO of Omaya Yachts and Elica Yard, said: “Being on the water has always been a passion of our family and runs deep in our DNA. It was a natural progression for Elica Group to develop a range of serial-production yachts with the aim of building the very best power catamarans. We’re confident the OMAYA 50 will turn heads and are excited to introduce her to the world.”

The vast corporate investment in Elica Yard has enhanced its 15,000 sqm facilities and modernised operations to accommodate cutting-edge technologies for producing turnkey yacht projects. This has resulted in streamlining the shipbuilding process, reducing costs and achieving high quality of the vessels it produces.

The first of Omaya’s yachts, the OMAYA 50, is a 50ft luxury catamaran with a best-in-class beam of 8.4 metres, which provides unrivalled additional space within the lower deck and cabins, as well as its generous saloon living space. The bow area’s layout is focused on creating comfortable social areas which ensures lazy days soaking up the sun can be enjoyed. Boasting large sunbeds, ample comfortable seating areas and open deck space, the yacht is designed with socialising and entertaining in mind, with the potential of longer-term living on board, not just holidays.

Available in two configurations for the lower deck, with the owner version providing a large master cabin covering the entire port side complete with a double bed, sofa, desk and vanity area, integrated wardrobe and large ensuite offering double basins and a full standing shower. Two further double guest cabins are on the starboard side with ensuite bathrooms and an additional crew cabin.

ILIAD Catamarans’ Multihull of the Year Winner to Shine at 2024 Sydney International Boat Show

The ILIAD 53F – voted Multihull of the Year - will be on display at the Sydney International Boat Show.

The ILIAD 53F, winner of the 2024 Multihull of the Year award, will be a major drawcard for visitors to the 2024 Sydney International Boat Show from 1 – 4 August.

ILIAD Catamarans will be showcasing the highly acclaimed long-range power catamaran in Darling Harbour with inspection bookings now available.

The ILIAD 53F has been enthusiastically embraced by international powercat buyers who appreciate its remarkable range, huge living spaces and extraordinary quality of finish.   The model enjoyed its US debut at the 2024 Miami International Boat Show in February where it was immediately sold.

The luxurious power catamaran features one of the highest bridgedeck clearances in her market segment, with a high freeboard to deliver comfortable cruising in challenging offshore conditions.

Distinguished by her outstanding interior living space, including a generous forward lounge, internal helm station and dining for 6-8 people, the ILIAD 53F has panoramic windows delivering natural light and superb views from every angle.   Equipped with the finest European appliances, the galley is designed for stylish entertaining, and her expansive benches, full-size refrigerator and freezer, and remarkable storage make her ideal for extended cruising adventures.

Accommodation onboard is spacious and beautifully designed with the master suite encompassing an entire hull and featuring an oversized island queen bed, panoramic windows, generous headroom and large ensuite.

The ILIAD 53F boasts exceptional outdoor space for entertaining and relaxing, and the cockpit features a bar area and dining setting for up to ten guests. The flybridge sets a new reference in use of space, features and comfort. The tender platform is ideal for safe sea access when swimming or diving and makes a superb sunbathing spot when the tender is deployed.

The ILIAD 53F is powered by 440hp Volvo or Yanmar engines (Cummins optional) delivering a top speed of 21 knots (lightship), and cruising long range at low speeds will afford more than 2,500 nautical miles.

The ILIAD 53 Series has been extremely successful for ILIAD Catamarans with the ILIAD 53S (sedan version) and new ILIAD 53E (Hybrid electric version) offering buyers a choice of impressive designs to suit their needs.

The shipyard’s range also comprises the ILIAD 62 and the recently unveiled ILIAD 75 flagship model.

Appointments to inspect the ILIAD 53F at the Sydney International Boat Show can be made by visiting https://iliadcatamarans.com/events/2024-sydney-international-boat-show/ .

Australia sustains major damage in dramatic collision on Lyttelton Harbour

Tom Slingsby and his Australian crew have been hit with a devastating blow after a dramatic collision with a course mark during the first fleet race of the Championship Sunday forced the team to retire from racing altogether.  The collision occurred as Australia and Canada were approaching the first mark of the race at speed. Australia driver Tom Slingsby made a split second decision to manoeuvre away to avoid a potentially catastrophic collision with the Canada Team’s F50 and crew, instead hitting the course mark, causing extensive damage to the Flying Roo.

Tom Slingsby said: “It all happened so quickly but at that moment I knew that we were going to hit Canada, so I had a choice to make and I wanted to keep people safe so I turned the boat as hard as I could into the course mark. I knew the mark was there but It was either that or go straight through Canada.”  Slingsby was visibly shaken by the incident, saying to the media: “Honestly I am just happy that no one was hurt and we are all in shock. I don't think it has all sunk in and it’s been pretty emotional for me. It is a really scary moment when you feel like you could kill someone.”

The collision has caused irreparable damage to the front beam of the F50 with further damage sited to the port hull and board case. The full extent of the damage to the Australia F50 is still being reviewed by the SailGP Technical Team.

Following an initial investigation from the SailGP umpires, the Australia Team were determined to be at fault for the collision and have been docked 12 event points and 8 season points. The decision is currently being reviewed by SailGP umpires and the Australia Team.

Australia’s biggest rivals, the recently-rebranded Black Foils - New Zealand SailGP Team - claimed victory on their home waters, followed by France who finished the podium final on Championship Sunday in second place and Canada in third.   The Australia Team will work alongside SailGP’s Technical Team to assess the full extent of the damage to the F50 and commence urgent repairs, with the goal of having the Flying Roo back racing in Bermuda for the Apex Group Bermuda Grand Prix on 4-5 May 2024.

Lightweight Wonder

An expertly custom-crafted Schionning catamaran will sail the world with ease, thanks to the strong, durable DuFLEX Build System.

A highly-customised Schionning Solitaire 1520 cruising catamaran is taking shape on the Gold Coast, in the talented hands of the team at Mahi Boats , specialists in custom boat building, particularly multihulls and game fishing boats to commercial standards.

Founder and director, Dan Williams began the business 17 years ago as Hybrid Composites, before demand propelled the business into custom boat building. Dan’s background includes international experience crafting carbon fibre racing yachts.

Now, ensconced in a supershed at the Gold Coast City Marina & Shipyard within the thriving boat building hub of Coomera, Mahi Boats is working on several major projects, including the 50-foot (15.25-metre) Schionning Solitaire 1520.

Described as “a serious bluewater cruiser capable of sailing the world with high mileage daily runs in comfort and safety with minimal slamming”, the Solitaire 1520 offers similar internal comfort and space to a similarly sized production boat, but is far lighter, stiffer and stronger with better waterline beam values and higher power to weight ratio.

As Dan explains, “The owners chose this model as they loved the design and the ability to customise head heights and cabins to suit their specific needs.”  There are dozens of custom features throughout the boat, starting with the entire layout.  “The clients designed the layout of the boat and we are continuing to customise everything along the way,” says Dan.

“We have raised the headroom inside. We are running a hybrid electric motor system and the boat is packed with custom electronics.  The boat is designed to sail two-handed around the world. They owners are planning to cruise the east coast and around Australia initially, but this is the catamaran they can rely on for long-range cruising once they’re ready.”  The owners’ sailing ambitions are to be on the water within 14 months, and the team at Mahi Boats are well underway, with six boat builders engaged on the project.

Crucial to keeping the weight down and keeping to the tight construction schedule is the use of DuFLEX panels from ATL Composites, as specified by Schionning Designs.  “There are many benefits of using DuFLEX panels,” Dan states. “They are easily assembled, CNC-cut, pre-laminated panels that enable fast construction.  They’re easy to join using ATL’s Z-Press which applies heat and pressure to cure the epoxy adhesive on the Z-Joints. Joins are fully cured in seven to 20 minutes, depending on the ambient temperature.

Other composite products from ATL include Divinycell Structural Foam, KINETIX   R246TX Thixotropic Laminating Epoxy, WEST SYSTEM 105 resin and associated hardeners and powder modifiers, TECHINGLUE R60 Structural Adhesive in easily dispensed cartridge form,   and TECHINIFILL R1160 pre-blended Fairing Compound.

“ATL offers a large range of composite products, all of which we are happy to use,” Dan continues.

“All ATL products are high quality and are competitive in price across the board. The ATL team go above and beyond to make sure we have everything we need when we need it.”

Riviera - Australia’s Premium Luxury Motor Yacht Builder

Yachting magazine puts the Riviera 6000 Sport Yacht Platinum Edition to the test

March 25, 2020

Yachting magazine’s Kevin Koenig headed out of Sydney Harbour into the rolling Pacific Ocean to put Riviera’s 6000 Sport Yacht Platinum Edition through its paces. Highlighting what he describes as Rivera’s ‘Australian ethos of building rugged, do-it-yourself vessels that can handle most any sea’, he found there was much more to like than just Riviera’s ability to meld seaworthiness and style. “It’s also a legitimate luxury brand, brandishing its bona fides in the fleet’s stitching, woodwork, and overall fit and finish. Which is to say, Riviera doesn’t have many soft spots. That is why it’s exciting to see the builder challenge itself even further in creating the Platinum Edition of its Sport Yachts series, including a 4800 Series II, a 5400 and the flagship of the line, the 6000.”
