Why We Love This San Francisco Boat Tour

“A catamaran sail on the San Francisco Bay is my number one go to when I have friends coming to San Francisco that have never been here before. Inevitably they’re going to want to see Fisherman’s Wharf, so I know it’s always going to be a hit if I send them out on the bay to sail past Alcatraz and under the mighty Golden Gate.”

San Francisco Sailing Trips FAQs

What’s the difference between a catamaran and a real sailboat.

A catamaran has two hulls instead of one. The result is a more stable ride (like a Rolls Royce compared to a Dune Buggy).

Will I get seasick?

Probably not. Since we are a more stable ride most people don’t have any problems. If you are very susceptible, you may want to get a patch or seasick pills.

What should I wear?

Usually a pair of jeans, a tee shirt or sweatshirt, tennis shoes & a jacket is all you will need. Be sure to bring extra layers, the bay can be very windy.

What if I forget a jacket & it gets cold?

We have some jackets on board that you are welcome to use.

Do you have life jackets?

Yes, we have life jackets for kids and adults.

Can I bring a lunch?

We prefer that you don’t bring any food. We have beer, wine and soda for purchase. If you are on a private charter, you can pay a clean up fee & bring your own food. No outside beverages are allowed.

How far in advance should I book?

We strongly recommend you purchase tickets in advance as cruises often sell out quickly. To maximize your chances of getting the day and time you prefer, please book well in advance.

What is your cancellation policy?

No refunds for reservations cancelled less than 72 hours prior to departure time.

Will I get wet?

If you’re outside on the trampolines, there is a pretty good chance you’ll get wet. If you really don’t want to get wet, you can stay in the cabin. With a 360 degree view, you won’t miss a single thing.

Is the cabin heated?

Yes, the cabin is heated.

Who designed Adventure Cat 2?

Kurt Hughes Designs of Seattle.

How fast does the Adventure Cat 2 go?

Under sail, the average speed is 8-12 knots.

Cancellation Policy

Partner operated activities are subject to the policy of the operator. The San Francisco Sailing Tour is 100% refundable if cancelled 24 hours prior to departure. If cancelled less than 24 hours prior to departure no refund will be issued.

A Perfect Day on the Bay: Sailing in San Francisco

Sailing San Francisco Bay

Sailing through the blue-gray waters of the Bay, the wind whips through my hair and sends a shiver across my exposed skin. It’s mid-August, but the air turns from crisp and cool to sharp and biting as our catamaran gains speed and heads toward open waters.

The landscape is coated in a blanket of gray fog, so thick and palpable you can feel the droplets of moisture in the air. Alcatraz looms on the horizon like a ghost ship, appearing suddenly and faintly in the distance, before disappearing into the mist once again.

Alcatraz Sailing Catamaran

But our captain set his sights on a different landmark, still hidden behind the dense layers of gray and white. Then, the fog breaks; the tip of the structure peeks out through the cloud layer, beckoning us closer.

All the while, the hulls of the catamaran cut through the icy waves as we draw near to our target.

San Francisco Bay Catamaran Cruise

The winds are in our favor—suddenly, the afternoon sunlight pours down through the cloud layer and dispels the remaining fog. Our destination materializes before our eyes, a majestic reddish-orange giant standing watch over a sea of blue and gray and brown.

The Golden Gate Bridge.

Sailing San Francisco Bay

Sailing the San Francisco Bay is something I had wanted to do since moving to the Bay Area in May 2017. Despite many day trips to the city over the years, we had never spent much time enjoying the beautiful waterfront…due in part to the unpredictable, omnipresent fog that lurks over the Bay ( always so mischievous, Karl! )

Like many people, I’m often guilty of overlooking local treasures in favor of more “exotic” destinations. But, c’mon—I’m incredibly lucky to live under an hour away from one of the most iconic cities in the United States. I need to take advantage of that more often, right?

So finally, I decided it was time. I booked two spots on the 1pm Bay Sail with Adventure Cat Sailing Charters , grabbed my trusty denim jacket (layers are key when it comes to visiting San Francisco) and made my way up to The City By the Bay.

It was sailing time!

Adventure Cat Sailing San Francisco

Adventure Cat’s tours depart from Pier 39, one of the most bustling and touristic destinations in the Fisherman’s Wharf district. Our cruise was scheduled for 1pm sharp, so we arrived to the pier at 12:45pm to check in, as per instructions.

Side note: As much as I hate the crowds at Pier 39, I have to admit I always love seeing the sea lions!

San Francisco Bay Catamaran Cruise

Heeding the captain’s warnings about the potential of getting soaked near the front of the boat, Derek and I found a spot on the port side of the catamaran. We pulled away from Pier 39 and into the Bay…and just like that, we were off!

The day started off quite foggy, and with the wind chill it felt a solid 10-15 degrees colder than it did back in Fisherman’s Wharf. Even if you’re visiting San Francisco on a sunny August day like we did, always come prepared with layers!

Adventure Cat Sailing Review

We sailed past Alcatraz, then continued along in the direction of the Golden Gate Bridge. It was such a fun moment when the fog finally lifted and we were able to catch a clear view of the bridge in the distance.

As we made our way closer, the captain zigged and zagged in front of the bridge, ensuring that everyone on the boat was treated to photo-worthy views of San Francisco’s most iconic monument.

Sailing San Francisco Bay

Gazing upon the Golden Gate Bridge is one of my all-time favorite activities in San Francisco, and even though I’ve seen it many times before, viewing the bridge from the water was a completely new experience.

Especially when we sailed directly beneath the bridge!

Golden Gate Bridge Sailing

After cruising around near the bridge for a while, we headed back across the Bay to take a closer look at Alcatraz. Having visited the island and walked through the cell house years ago, all I could think about were the haunting legends and myths surrounding this historic prison.

Adventure Cat Sailing Review

90 minutes later, and we found ourselves pulling back into Pier 39, greeted by a chorus of sea lion barks and growls. With the whole afternoon still ahead of us, Derek and I opted to drive across the bridge to the charming town of Sausalito, for a bit of booze, seafood and even more waterfront views.

A perfect day on the Bay indeed!

What to Know About Sailing the San Francisco Bay

  • The tour that we booked was the 1pm Bay Sail with Adventure Cat Sailing Charters . This tour costs $45 per person and runs for 90 minutes. Alternative departure times are 11am and 3pm.
  • Adventure Cat also offers a sunset sail (departure times vary) which costs $60 per person. Two complimentary beverages and light hors d’oeuvres are included.
  • Dress very warmly , and bring layers. Our cruise took place at 1pm in August…and even in a long maxi dress and a denim jacket, I was very cold! Jeans, a t-shirt and a jacket would be a smart choice. Flat shoes are definitely recommended.
  • You can purchase refreshments, alcoholic beverages and snacks onboard. If I hadn’t been so chilly, I would have loved to sip a glass of white wine while sailing under the Golden Gate Bridge.

This sounds so fun! I loved the short trip we made to San Francisco and was surprised by how much I liked the city…it hadn’t been too high on my list of cities I really wanted to see but I quickly jumped to the top of my list of places I fell in love with. I want to go back and see so much more…a boat trip like this would be a must!

As a responsible Skipper, I will check this vessel to determine that it is in seaworthy condition before departure. I agree to return the vessel in the same condition that it was received and secure the vessel according to the "Check-In Form - Skipper Responsibilities" checklist. I will be responsible for excess cleaning costs, loss, and/or repairs. The amount is determined by the fleet level. Please check the white binder on each vessel for the total. New Zealand wins Mubadala New York Sail Grand Prix

  • By June Hsu

In this photo provided by SailGP, the fleet led by Emirates Great Britain SailGP Team ahead of Canada SailGP Team and USA SailGP Team pass the New York City skyline on Race Day 2 of the Mubadala New York Sail Grand Prix in New York, June 23, 2024.

New Zealand came out victorious in the Mubadala New York Sail Grand Prix, the "world's most exciting racing on water," on New York's Hudson River Sunday.

The two-day event was the penultimate race weekend of Mubadala SailGP before the competition's fourth season concludes in San Francisco in July.

SailGP is an international sailing competition in which F50 foiling catamarans compete at 13 global destinations for a season of grand prix races. Some of this season's previous destinations included Dubai, United Arab Emirates, and Sydney, Australia.

Each grand prix consists of separate "fleet races" before the three highest-scoring teams compete in a final race to decide the champion.

This SailGP season consists of 10 world-renowned teams: Australia, Canada, Emirates Great Britain, France, Germany, New Zealand, Rockwool Denmark, Spain, Switzerland and the United States.

On Friday, Coutts announced that SailGP Season Five would feature a Brazil team, the competition's first-ever team from South America.

"As a league, it's an awesome place to be," said Phil Robertson, Canada's driver. "You got new teams and a lot of interest from a lot of countries so to have Brazil on the start line is very special and cool to expand to South America."

Coming off its last race in Halifax, Canada, earlier this month, SailGP completed its 12th stop around the world this season in the waters between New York and New Jersey in which Canada placed second and Emirates Great Britain placed third.

In this photo provided by SailGP, Peter Burling, Co-CEO and driver of New Zealand SailGP Team, lifts the trophy as the team celebrates aboard their F50 catamaran after winning the Mubadala New York Sail Grand Prix in New York, June 23, 2024.

The last time SailGP raced in New York was its debut season in 2019.

"Looking back on that inaugural event is like reflecting on a totally different stage in our journey," Russell Coutts, CEO of SailGP, said in a press conference Friday. "We had just six national teams in a five-event calendar and now nearing the end of Season Four, we have 10 teams with the best of the best athletes in the sport, competing in a 13-event calendar, broadcast in 212 territories around the world."

Approximately 9,000 ticketed attendees gathered on Governors Island and on the water Saturday and Sunday to watch the races.

Taylor Canfield, driver for the U.S. team, spoke on the significance of sailing in front of home fans in New York City and in San Francisco next month.

"It's so cool to be here in the U.S. and these two iconic cities in New York and San Francisco," Canfield said in Friday's press conference. "It's going to be amazing conditions and just perfect weather. This is the most iconic city in the world and it's going to come alive so we're excited about that."

Looking forward to the final races in San Francisco next month, team Australia — reigning champion of SailGP seasons one, two and three — faces pressure to take home another win.

"It's exciting to be in this position," Tom Slingsby, driver for Australia, said. "For sure there's a bit more adrenaline and there's a bit more on the line knowing that every race really counts at the moment but I have full faith in my team. We've performed under pressure, we've won three one million dollar races."

On July 14, one team will walk away with a $2 million prize and the title of SailGP's season four champion.

When it comes to high-performance sailing—and staging high-profile high-performance sailing events—America’s Cup legend and SailGP CEO Sir Russell Coutts has pretty much seen it all. He won the Cup as the New Zealand team’s helmsman three times. He was the CEO of Larry Ellison ’s Oracle Team USA syndicate when they won the America’s Cup after a historic comeback against Emirates Team New Zealand in San Francisco in 2013. And he was there when they lost it to a much faster Emirates Team New Zealand in Bermuda in 2017.

But that was then. These days, the SailGP global sailing league he and Ellison launched after they lost the America’s Cup is about to complete its fourth full season featuring 10 national teams, racing aboard 50-foot-long, high-performance hydrofoiling sailing catamarans in 13 locations around the world.

And since I was one of the lucky ones in the sold-out crowd that was able to watch the racing from a VIP boat close to the race course, and from the grandstands and luxury boxes at the Mubadala New York SailGP race in New York City this weekend, I can say with confidence that fans loved watching SailGP catamarans race between the iconic NYC skyline, the Stature of Liberty, and the race village hospitality tents and grandstands on Governors Island. And of course, everyone loved watching the United States SailGP Team compete in its home race.

Unfortunately for the Americans (and all the other teams too), no team could compete with the Black Foils, New Zealand SailGP Team in the final. The Kiwis sailed flawlessly to take the win over Canada and Emirates GBR and punch their ticket to the $2 million Grand Final in San Francisco next month.

But no matter who wins, the SailGP’s special mix of sailing, competition, sustainability and fan-friendliness has all the excitement, technology, celebrities, drama, and sponsorship opportunities of Formula 1 Grand Prix racing.

Fans get close to the action at the Mubadala SailGP New York

In fact, the league continues to attract fans from all around the world. And as I learned at the opening press conference held at Peak with Priceless on the 101 st floor of 30 Hudson Yards, the SailGP continues to attract investment from some of the world’s most recognizable sponsors as well.

The first announcement was that Mubadala Capital (the wholly owned asset management subsidiary of Mubadala Investment Company and title sponsor of the Mubadala New York SailGP) had acquired a newly formed SailGP Team to represent Brazil. The new team is the first South American team to join the SailGP league and the first of the new teams and new owners to be announced ahead of Season 5.

“Brazil has achieved an incredible history of success in Olympic sailing and it’s fitting they are now entering the professional ranks of SailGP – competing against the best in the world,” said Coutts. “This opens up a new and very significant market for SailGP and we’re incredibly excited to further develop Brazil’s passionate fan base and strengthen our connection to the region.”

"We are thrilled to partner with SailGP to form the first-ever South American SailGP team," said Oscar Fahlgren, Chief Investment Officer of Mubadala Capital. "This acquisition not only adds to our investment portfolio but also aligns with our long-term commitment to investing in Brazil, while enhancing our ability to create lasting positive social and environmental impact."

The Mubadala Brazil SailGP Team will partner with Brazilian sports and entertainment firm IMM to operate the team. Owned by ex-Brazilian Olympic sailor, Alan Adler (CEO), IMM’s portfolio includes some of Brazil’s most iconic events, including the Rio Open, Cirque Du Soleil and São Paulo Fashion Week. Adler is also CEO of Brazil Motor Sports, the promoter of the São Paulo Grand Prix Formula 1 race.

The United States SailGP team will be partnering with Tommy Hilfiger in season 5

The next sponsorship announcement came from an unlikely source—United States SailGP Driver Taylor Canfield—as he was about to field some tough questions about the rivalry he and his team have with Canada SailGP driver Phil Robertson and the United States’ struggles to get up to speed with the competition.

“Before I get into that,” he said with a smile. “I’m excited to break the news that Tommy Hilfiger will be partnering with the team next season,” he said just before he put on a Tommy Hilfiger sweater that he wore for the rest of the conference.

“We’re going to go out and push hard. We’re a work in progress, we’re not hiding from that,” Canfield acknowledged. “Coming into SailGP with our ownership group we were very clear. We have a couple of goals—to win both on and off the water.”

There’s no question that a long-term partnership with Tommy Hilfiger is a very big off-the-water win for the United States Sail GP Team.

United States SailGP team CEO Mike Buckley and Tommy Hilfiger announced their partnership at the ... [+] Mubadala Sail GP New York event in June

“I’ve long been in awe of how Tommy Hilfiger has defined fashion in sports, so this partnership is a literal dream come true,” said Mike Buckley, United States SailGP Team CEO in the official partnership announcement. “Tommy Hilfiger blends the world of style and athleticism like no other, and I get goosebumps when thinking about how we're going to shake up the world of sailing.”

“Since I was very young, I always loved the world of sailing and the nautical lifestyle said Tommy Hilfiger in the team’s official announcement. “But SailGP is next level. It’s a whole new sport. By fusing intense racing and elite performance with international competition in iconic venues around the world, SailGP is making waves in adrenaline sport.

“Mike Buckley and the United States SailGP Team have a unique vision to create a story and an impact that goes well beyond sporting competitions. I am so inspired by their grit, determination and innovation, and together we have the opportunity to disrupt sailing and bring something new to fans globally.”

Olympic champion, entrepreneur and United States SailGP Team board member Lindsey Vonn practices ... [+] with the team in New York

And thanks to Olympic champion, entrepreneur and United States SailGP Team board member Lindsey Vonn and others, the American team’s ownership group is making waves on and off the water as well.

“With my knowledge in both athletics and business, I hope I can help Mike grow the team and their partnerships, which will support them with the resources to succeed,” Vonn said after sailing with the team on the official practice day. “I’m very passionate about American sports and enhancing sports that close the gender gap. Plus, I love speed and adrenaline so when the opportunity presented itself it was a no brainer.”

With all the buzz the league has been generating lately, the SailGP looks like it’s just about to take a huge leap forward. And now that we know that Brazil will be one of two new teams to entering the league for Season 5, some intriguing questions remain still remain before the last event of the season takes place on July 13-14 in San Francisco such as…

What country will the other new team represent?

And more importantly, since 12 teams want to race next season, but only 11 F50s will be available, one of the teams from France, Canada or Spain probably won’t be starting in Season 5 unless they get funding.

Burling skippers Kiwis to New York regatta win and clinches spot in SailGP’s $2M Grand Final

Peter Burling and the New Zealand Black Foils sailed a flawless podium race on the Hudson River on Sunday to win the Mubadala New York Sail Grand Prix and clinch a spot in SailGP’s $2 million, winner-take-all Grand Final in San Francisco next month.

Burling and his mates took the inside position at the start and kept their 50-foot foiling catamaran ahead of Phil Robertson of Canada and Giles Scott of Britain to win for the fifth time in 12 regattas. They still need to get through the San Francisco regatta in one piece on July 13 and 14 but will have a spot on the starting line of the three-boat Grand Final for the second straight year.

Three-time defending SailGP champion Tom Slingsby and Team Australia missed the podium race for the second straight regatta but leap-frogged Spain into second place in the season standings. The Aussies went 9-1 in Sunday’s two fleet races and finished fourth overall.

The Kiwis have exerted dominance despite a stunning setback in the season’s third regatta, when their wingsail suddenly shattered and fell into the Mediterranean minutes after they had completed the first day of racing in Saint-Tropez. They were forced to the docks for the rest of that regatta and the next regatta.

Image

It’s not surprising the Kiwis have bounced back, considering their deep experience. Burling and wing trimmer Blair Tuke won three Olympic medals together, including one gold, and are the core of two-time defending America’s Cup champion Emirates Team New Zealand.

“I knew we had a long road ahead of us to be top of the leaderboard going into the Grand Final, missing an event, not only the points side of things but just the lack of training time, which this group has had less training time than anyone else in the whole league this season,” Burling said.

“It’s been a tough season but to just charge through that and get these wins on the board is something we’re super proud of,” he said before the crew members sprayed each other with Champagne.

The Kiwis lead the trans-Tasman Sea rival Aussies 93-78 on the season leaderboard, while Spain’s Diego Botin is third with 76 points. France is five points out of podium position, Canada and ROCKWOOL Denmark are another four points back, and the British are 10 points back.

Nothing is given in SailGP, where penalty points, a collision or a capsize can drastically affect a team’s fate.

Slingsby, an Olympic gold medalist and former America’s Cup champion, beat Burlng and Britain’s Sir Ben Ainslie in the Season 3 Grand Final in tech baron Larry Ellison’s global league. The prize money has doubled to $2 million this season for the winning crew.

Robertson had a perfectly timed start Sunday but the Canadians briefly buried one bow into the water. Burling had the inside position and forced Canada and Britain high and wide approaching the first mark to gain control.

“Awesome to get another win on the board. Really tricky conditions, really snakes and ladders, but to get three solid starts today, put together three solid races and end up winning it,” Burling said. “I’m pretty proud of the team.”

A F50 catamarans sails by the Statue of Liberty.

Thousands of spectators turned out over the weekend for SailGP, which brought a high-speed competition, and lots of champagne, to the New York Harbor.

At 11:30 a.m. Sunday morning, with New York City under a heat advisory, a gaggle of sailing enthusiasts, dressed in polo shirts and summer dresses, boarded a ferry for Governors Island to watch towering F50 catamarans race along the skyline of Lower Manhattan and in front of the Statue of Liberty.

It was the second day and the finals of the New York Sail Grand Prix, part of SailGP, the growing international sailing competition in which teams, grouped by country, compete in $5 million boats that race up to 60 miles per hour.

The competition was founded in 2018 by Larry Ellison, the tech billionaire, and Russell Coutts, a five-time America’s Cup winner, to build a mainstream sailing league. Unlike America’s Cup, which occurs roughly every four years, SailGP has events around the globe throughout the year, allowing audiences to follow along.

“It’s this high-adrenaline, high-speed sort of racing product right in front of you,” Mr. Coutts said.

A crowd of spectators sit together on a bunch of stands. Three people hold up white letters that say USA.

Organizers and fans are comparing the competition to Formula 1 racing on the water, which also has billionaire and celebrity backers and flashy backdrops including St. Tropez and Dubai. Now in its fourth season, the number of SailGP teams and events has doubled. The races, filled with Olympic sailors and state-of-the-art catamarans, are broadcast throughout the world and attract millions of viewers, according to organizers.

The sold-out race was held at the tip of Manhattan. Thousands of spectators gathered to watch the race by boat or from Governors Island, a 172-acre island in New York Harbor. (Tickets started at $85 for the grandstand.)

A private tent on a paved area by the water was reserved for team owners and invited ticket holders. There was sushi and dumplings and tea service catered by the Plaza.

The teams were spread around the lounge, marked by flags. Lindsey Vonn, the Olympic ski racer, is on the board of directors for the team from the United States.

“I love speed and adrenaline, so when the opportunity presented itself it was a no-brainer,” Ms. Vonn said in a text message. She attended the race live on Saturday.

On Sunday, the races started around 1 p.m., prompting many guests to put down their champagne and Aperol spritzes and approach the edge of the water to take in the sailing.

Unlike in Formula 1, where a spectator can see only a short stretch of the track at a time, all of SailGP’s racing happens in a tight area in full view of the crowd.

The event is a series of three short races (each one lasts about 15 minutes) in which the boats circle the course multiple times, depending on the wind conditions.

For the boat to turn, 32 functions have to be performed by the team in unison. The catamarans are close enough to shore to see the sailors — there are usually six on each boat — in action.

Jennifer Falvey, 63, a real estate agent, had traveled from Woodstock, Vt., for the event after hearing it about it from a friend. “The boats are just so sexy,” she said.

Daniela Forte, who came with her husband from Westport, Conn., was struck by the speed.

“I don’t have a sailing background, and I had never heard of SailGP before this event, but it’s kind of an amazing idea,” she said. “Sailing has always felt like something you had to do, not just something you can watch, but this is amazing.”

An hour and a half after the first race started, the team from New Zealand was declared the winner (a television broadcaster announced: “The Kiwis have conquered Manhattan.”) The top three contenders are now New Zealand, Australia and Spain — ahead of the season finals in San Francisco in the middle of July.

Then sailors, still wet from the water, filled the lounge for “Apres Sail.” Hundreds of people remained in the private lounge for hours, snacking on fresh plates of pasta and freshly shucked oysters.

Despite the stifling, 90-degree temperatures the party continued until late afternoon. Dance music blared over the loudspeakers, fans mingled with the sailors, and at least one bar ran out of champagne.
