Venture capitalist Mike Arrington said the one splurge he wanted to make after selling TechCrunch for $30 million was to buy a nice boat.

He nicknamed his future ride "Buddy" and had it brought in from Canada. Unfortunately, the Department of Homeland Security snatched it up before he could board it .

The reason: Arrington says he noticed an error on the paperwork and refused to sign it until it was fixed. His boat was seized instead.

Bonus: Mike Arrington really wanted a big boat but the government swooped in and took it away.

That Yacht Docked in Boston Isn’t Mark Cuban’s, You Guys

Get a compelling long read and must-have lifestyle tips in your inbox every sunday morning — great with coffee.

The traveling sideshow that is the not-Mark-Cuban’s-yacht made its way to Boston this week.

The cruise-ship-sized vessel, named Fountainhead , has been turning heads since it docked in the North End’s Yacht Haven on Friday, according to the neighborhood news site NorthEndWaterfront.com .

But the billionaire owner of the Dallas Mavericks and co-star of the investment game show Shark Tank wants to make it known he does not own that, or any, yacht. He is emphatic on this point.

“I DON’T OWN A YACHT,” Cuban reportedly wrote in an email to the celebrity gossip website Page Six , the all-caps his.

The owner of the yacht—which is 288 feet long, comes equipped with a basketball hoop, has enough deck space to store two additional boats, hails from the Cayman Islands , and most likely draws its name from the Ayn Rand novel (which Cuban, as luck would have it, has said is one of his favorites )—has been spreading misinformation, Cuban says.

The full email, as reported by Page Six:

I don’t own a yacht. Never have . . . The guy who owns the boat tells EVERYONE that it’s mine. It’s so crazy, I got a letter from someone thanking me because the ship’s doctor had saved this person with CPR . . . had people email me asking if they can come aboard. Of course I always say yes  I DON’T OWN A YACHT.

Unnamed sources told the gossip site the boat’s owner was actually an executive from Sears. Sears didn’t return a request from Boston for comment.

Many, many online resources earlier reported the boat belonged to Cuban. There was Mark Cuban’s yacht docked in Miami , in Bar Harbor , and The Hamptons , the sites reported. Forbes counted Cuban among the big boat owners in its ranking of 100 Biggest Yachts . Passing reference to Cuban and his vessel was made in a Thrillist list of the 8 Most Ridiculous Yachts in the World .

Then on Tuesday came a series of stories about how the nautical wonder absolutely didn’t belong to the wealthy basketball figure and TV personality.

One of them came from the Boston Business Journal , a reporter for which also reached out to Cuban by texting him directly on a messaging app he owns called Cyber Dust .

“I don’t,” Cuban tells BBJ reporter Sara Castellanos, “have a yacht.”

Mark Cuban Reveals The One Reason Why He Avoids Yachts, Butlers And Chauffeurs

Zinger key points.

  • Cuban corrected assumptions about owning a 288-foot yacht and said he doesn't own a boat.

Mark Cuban  may be a billionaire investor and owner of the Dallas Mavericks, but he doesn't always act like one.

During an  episode  of "The Really Good Podcast" last week, Cuban shared that he deliberately avoids certain habits typically associated with the extremely wealthy.

"I just try to be the same person, I mean, as I was when I was poor, middle, and rich," Cuban told host Bobbi Althoff on the podcast.

Cuban, who is often known for his antics during NBA games and as a saavy investor on "Shark Tank," said that he doesn't hire staff to clean his home, cook his meals or drive for him. He said purchasing a yacht is "just not what I would do." He added that more staff often means less privacy for those like him who employ large teams.

"I like the privacy," Cuban said. "I've been around people who hire somebody to do everything for them, and that's just, like, no privacy."

During the interview, Cuban corrected assumptions about his ownership of a 288-foot yacht. "The guy who owns the boat tells everyone it's mine," Cuban said. "It's so crazy, I don't even own a boat."

During an interview earlier in July, Cuban shared about the one time  he missed one of the biggest investments of his life.

Miami Yacht Watch: The glorious Fountainhead returns

Not owned by Mark Cuban but Sears CEO Eddie Lampert

A post shared by Buster Bark (@busterbark) on Jul 9, 2017 at 8:12am PDT

Miami is a common host for extravagant yachts at all times of the year. Track these magnificent vessels and their outlandish toys with Miami Yacht Watch , which typically runs weekly on Curbed Miami.

The 288-foot Fountainhead, which has been mistakingly tied to Dallas Mavericks owner and Shark Tank star Mark Cuban as its proprietor, has returned to Miami from Port Everglades.

Currently docked at Island Gardens Deep Harbour Marina on Watson Island, the extravagant superyacht valued at an estimated $130 million actually belongs to billionaire Sears CEO Eddie Lampert, who apparently tells people — in jest — Cuban is the owner, according to the New York Post .

“The guy who owns the boat tells everyone that it’s mine,” Cuban told Page Six. “It’s so crazy . . . I don’t even own a boat.”

Heightening the false rumor is the fact Fountainhead features a basketball hoop on its aft. The yacht is somehow only the 72nd largest in the world, per Boat International . Fountainhead is equipped to house 14 guests and additionally includes a library, a recreation room, a full gym and health club, and a contra-flow swimming pool.

See Mark Cuban's 288-foot yacht with basketball court on the stern

If you were on Mark Cuban's level, there's you no question you'd roll in style. But would you roll in this much style?

Cuban's 288-foot yacht "Fountainhead" recently was docked outside of Miami hotel the Epic.

If you were walking along outside the hotel, it would be pretty hard to miss this boat.

The Mavs owner is clearly ready to host his players at all times as there is a basketball hoop attached to the stern. Because if a Mav takes a vacation on a yacht the first thing on his mind is practicing on the water, right?

Have to wonder how it feels to be a Miami Heat fan and down on the water is gigantic reminder of the team that beat the locals in the 2011 finals.

Mark Cuban’s 288-Foot Yacht Fountainhead

Osa estimated that it was 250 feet long. While we were gawking, a guy rolled up and started doing some searches on his smartphone. “It’s 88 meters long,” he said. “That’s about 270 feet (288.713911, to be exact). Mark Cuban owns it. He and Mark Ellison of Oracle fame bought twin yachts from the Dutch luxury yacht company, Feadship, at the same time.” Ain’t the Internet wonderful?

Mark Ellison downsized his yacht

The sister to this ship is a downsized version of Mark Ellison’s previous yacht, the Associated Press reported it was 452 feet long, was five stories tall, had 82 rooms, “a wine cellar the size of most beach bungalows, a dozen yacht-length tenders, and a generator capable of providing enough electricity for a small town in Idaho or Maine… Final cost: $377 million.” He got rid of the larger yacht because he didn’t travel with that many people and it was hard to find mooring for something that big.

How do you afford a yacht like this?

In 1995, Cuban and fellow Indiana University alumnus Todd Wagner started Audionet, combining their mutual interest in college basketball and webcasting. With a single server and an ISDN line, Audionet became Broadcast.com in 1998. By 1999, Broadcast.com had grown to 330 employees and $13.5 million in revenue for the second quarter. In 1999, during the dot com boom, Broadcast.com was acquired by Yahoo! for $5.9 billion in Yahoo! stock.

After the sale, Cuban diversified his wealth to avoid exposure to a market crash. As of 2011, Cuban is No.459 on Forbes’ “World’s Richest People” list, with a net worth of $2.5 billion. The Guinness Book of Records credits Cuban with the “largest single e-commerce transaction,” after paying $40 million for his Gulfstream V jet in October 1999 .

What was that strike thing all about?

I’m sure some of you were wondering what that strike thing was all about yesterday. Thousands of websites, some as large as Wikipedia , others as small as my two blogs, went dark for 24 hours to protest two bills that are making their way through Congress. They are ostensibly to stop Internet piracy, but have the potential of crippling the Internet as we know it today.

I’ve experienced the chilling effect of what’s already on the books. I posted a video of a night lightning with a public domain audio of Beethoven’s Fifth playing in the background.

YouTube sent me a notice that they had removed the audio because of copyright concerns. It took 24 hours to get it back up after I provided evidence that the performance was in the public domain. Guilty until proven innocent.

Under the new laws, my whole site could have been taken down and I could have been subject to fines and jail had I been found to have been using copyrighted material. I have a video on my bike blog where I’m passing a slower rider. You can hear my MP3 player in the background. Conceivably, that could be a violation of the law.

If you don’t think they’ll fool with “the little guy,” consider this: we didn’t invade Russia nor China; we went after Granada.

Whats more impressive is that, between 1999 and 2012, Cuban lost $3.4B and he is still on the World’s Richest list.

I guess I should quit complaining about the hit my 401K took.

Wow, your trips are amazing!!!

Isn’t it Larry, not Mark, Ellison?

Congrats on the photos.

I once did the division on Bill Gates’ fortune and figured he could afford three Nimitz class aircraft carriers, including the planes, if he wanted a private Navy.

If I had the money, I’d just buy the Oasis of the Seas and convert one of the smaller decks into my private quarters. That way, the thing would pay for itself and I could take an unlimited number of friends for out sailing.

I always knew he had private plane but this “boat” is even more impressive!

Gotta love a guy who names his megayacht after Ayn Rand’s “masterpiece.” Gah. I know I can’t say here the word I’m thinking of, but it rhymes with “splooshrag.”

Inside mark cuban's private jet collection.

Mark Cuban is a huge fan of his aircraft collection.

  • Mark Cuban, known for his business ventures and NBA team ownership, owns two luxurious private jets – a Gulfstream G550 and a Boeing 757-200.
  • Cuban's Gulfstream G550 holds a Guinness World Record for the largest single e-commerce transaction, costing $40 million and saving him time for his loved ones.
  • The Mavericks' Boeing 757-200, acquired for $36 million, is specially outfitted for the NBA team, providing space for players, weight rooms, and a specialized meeting setup.

After making millions of dollars from career earnings or investments, most individuals set their sights on acquiring some of the most luxurious and exclusive assets. Some opt for mansions with gold-plated coffee tables, while others fill their garages with luxury vehicles. However, for some billionaires like Mark Cuban, some of their money is better spent collecting luxurious private jets .

Mark Cuban's love for private jets

Born and raised in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Mark Cuban is an American businessman and investor widely known as the owner of the National Basketball Association's (NBA) Dallas Mavericks. When not on the court, Cuban is also known for appearing as a judge on the ABC business reality television series Shark Tank, where entrepreneurs pitch their ideas to a panel of investors to persuade them to invest in their businesses.

Apart from molding NBA careers, investing in start-ups, and trying to reinvent the pharmaceutical drug sales industry, Cuban seems to love private jets. In fact, the wealthiest of the "Sharks" in the tank has two. This already puts him ahead of other wealthy business executives and celebrities who have only managed to keep one aircraft in their fleet.

Mark Cuban's two jets are also no mere Cirrus SF50s, clocking in at $1.96 million. With a net worth of over $6.2 billion, it is no secret that the Shark Tank investor would think bigger regarding private air travel. As such, the Mavericks boss has a Boeing 757 outfitted for a world-class sports team and a Gulfstream G550 business jet.

Setting a Guinness world record with the Gulfstream

While his first-ever private jet experience was on a Gulfstream II, Cuban owns a 22-year-old Gulfstream G550. He bought the jet in 1999, just after he made his first billion from selling his second company, Broadcast.com, to Yahoo. The $40 million purchase placed Cuban in the Guinness Book of World Records for the 'largest single e-commerce transaction.'

He still holds the record to this day, showing that clicking "buy" on the internet just isn't the same for everyone. In an interview with Business Jet Traveler , Cuban said he e-mailed Gulfstream after researching the company's website. They arranged to set up a demo flight for his pilot, who subsequently raved about it, sealing the deal without Cuban ever setting foot on his new investment.

Mark Cuban's smartest purchase

In another interview with Men's Journal Health & Fitness , Cuban said the jet was the smartest thing he had ever spent money on as it allowed him to spend more time with loved ones. "It is obviously brutally expensive, but time is the one asset we simply don't own. It saves me hours and hours," Cuban said. He added that the most important things in life are family, time, being nice, and avoiding stress.

The Gulfstream G550 is a popular choice among private jet users, offering a spacious cabin which can accommodate up to 19 passengers, in addition to a private bathroom and sleeping spaces. Speaking to Business Jet Traveler about some executives who have stopped flying private because of public criticism, Cuban highlighted the convenience of business jet travel. "They have to make their own decisions, but I just hope I compete with them. I get to work while they get to stand in line at the airport," he added.

The Mavericks Boeing 757

The second jet in Mark Cuban's collection is a Boeing 757-200, which he acquired for $36 million to transport his NBA team. Cuban purchased the Mavericks in 2000, shortly after buying the G550. While refusing to offer details on how the plane is outfitted, Cuban says he came up with the strategic vision for the plane, specifically focusing on providing space for players taller than seven feet.

It also has a weight room, special meeting set-ups, and space for medical treatments, as well as coaching and connectivity resources. While there is no footage of the aircraft's interior, it sounds reminiscent of the concept developed by NIKE and cabin designer Teague, specifically catering to professional athletes and sports teams. Cuban, who travels with his Mavericks to most games, believes that the decked-out unique cabin gives them a competitive advantage.

Built in June 1993, The Mavericks' 757 (registration N801DM) is now just over 30 years old. It was first delivered to Iberia, which operated it until November 2000. According to ch-aviation , it typically seats 63 passengers in an all-business configuration. By the early 2010s, the aircraft had clocked over 16,000 flight hours across 11,617 flight cycles. Now, it typically flies for approximately 600 hours per year.

When the NBA season is over, Cuban charters the jet to larger groups requiring high-end seating. In 2006, the jet was upgraded with Blended Winglet Technology from Aviation Partners Inc., increasing its range and eliminating long-haul refueling stops. The 757 can be spotted ferrying the Mavericks back and forth between Dallas and other cities with teams in the Western Conference.

Other teams with private jets

While privileged to have a customized Boeing narrowbody, the Mavericks are far from the only US sporting team to own a private aircraft for flying to and from games. Other well-known names include the New England Patriots, with a Boeing 767 (N36NE), which has served since 2017 and whose livery is iconic at airports hosting games. The Arizona Cardinals have one of the largest aircraft in sports, with a Boeing 777-200 to move their players across the country through the NFL season.

While the environmental footprint for teams using private jets is certainly high, they attempt to justify this by how much flying they must do each year. With dozens of players and staff traveling from city to city with tight turnarounds and the need for specialized equipment and medical rooms, private jets are best suited for these teams.

A private Boeing 767

Unsurprisingly, the most expensive jet in Cuban's collection was a Boeing 767-200. The widebody was operated by MLW Air, a company founded by Cuban and partners to offer high-end charter operations and occasionally serve the Mavericks, with registration N767MV. However, the aircraft now seems to have been scrapped. Its last flight was in February 2021, and it was sold to an aircraft parts company, indicating the end of the road for the nearly 40-year-old aircraft.

After gaining fame in their respective fields of expertise, many celebrities purchase their own jets to make their worldwide business and personal travel more accessible. Many of them acquire a single aircraft and fly it everywhere, but only a handful can say they have a collection. Respectfully, owning two or more aircraft also takes a different level of wealth.

Apart from Mark Cuban, a few other celebrities, including John Travolta, Tom Cruise, and Cristiano Ronaldo, are known to have a collection of private jets. John Travolta's portfolio is by far the most exciting , with a Bombardier Challenger, a Dassault Falcon 900, a couple of Gulfstream jets, an Eclipse 500, and a Boeing 727. He also owned a Boeing 707 , which he later donated to Australia's Historical Aircraft Restoration Society (HARS).

Tom Cruise has at least two aircraft in his fleet , including a Gulfstream IV worth about $20 million and a classic P-51 Mustang. Meanwhile, legendary soccer star Cristiano Ronaldo owns a $65.5 million Gulfstream G650 and previously a $25 million G200. However, the latter was reportedly put up for sale last year .

If you were given enough money to purchase a private jet today, which one would you go for? Feel free to let us know in the comments how you would customize it!

A 288-foot yacht loomed over the horizon in the Hamptons this weekend, and boatloads of women were being ferried out to the lavish launch.

The megayacht Fountainhead was docked off East Hampton in Gardiner’s Bay.

One spy said, “If you want to be seen, you dock in Sag Harbor. This was tucked away, but you still couldn’t miss it.”

The yacht is reported, and widely whispered, to be owned by Mark Cuban , who told us by email, “I don’t own a yacht. Never have . . . The guy who owns the boat tells EVERYONE that it’s mine. It’s so crazy, I got a letter from someone thanking me because the ship’s doctor had saved this person with CPR . . . had people email me asking if they can come aboard. Of course I always say yes 🙂 I DON’T OWN A YACHT.”

Mark cuban does his own chores — what he spends his money on instead of hiring staff.

If you envision a billionaire’s life being filled with yachts, personal butlers and endless luxury , you might be surprised by Mark Cuban’s daily routine. Even though the “Shark Tank” star, serial entrepreneur and investor has a net worth of $5.1 billion, he chooses to live a life that starkly contrasts with what people typically imagine for someone with extreme riches.

Jaspreet Singh: 5 Assets To Buy So You Never Have To Work Again Find Out: What To Do If You Owe Back Taxes to the IRS

Here’s more about why Mark Cuban does his own chores and what he truly values — plus, find out what the billionaire spends his money on instead of hiring staff .

Why Does Mark Cuban Do His Own Chores?

Even though being a billionaire might seem like the perfect excuse to avoid menial tasks, Cuban and his family usually manage their own household chores, including washing clothes and cooking meals. He chooses not to hire a staff to do everything for him, because, as he said in an interview on “The Really Good Podcast,” he won’t have the privacy he desires. “I’ve been around people who hire somebody to do everything for them,” he said, “and that’s just, like, no privacy.”

Grant Cardone: ‘Nobody Becomes Wealthy Because of a Salary’ — Here’s What You Need To Focus On Instead

What Else Does Cuban Value?

Cuban values his privacy, but what else is important to him?

He Values Friendships That Aren’t Based on Wealth

Most of Cuban’s friends are from his early days in Dallas or school in Indiana. He didn’t feel the need to change his social circle after becoming extremely wealthy. Instead, he enjoys spending time with old friends reminiscing and doing the same activities they always have done.

He Doesn’t Want His Wealth To Change Who He Is at the Core

Cuban knows that his massive amount of money isn’t the key to happiness. In a January interview with CBS’s “Sunday Morning,” Cuban said he believes he could be just as happy with only 1% of his net worth as long as he had his family.

His attitude toward his wealth is also very likely the reason his childhood friends view him as the same person he was before his financial success.

What Does Mark Cuban Spend His Money On?

Just because Cuban says he could be happy with 1% of his net worth — roughly $51 million — doesn’t mean that he doesn’t spend his riches. Here are some things he’s spent money on over the years.

A Computer Consulting Firm

Decades ago, the now 65-year-old Cuban owned a computer consulting firm called MicroSolutions. He officially became a millionaire at 32 years old, when he sold it for $6 million.

An Internet Radio Company

In April 1999, Cuban became a billionaire when he sold his internet radio company, Broadcast.com, to Yahoo for $5.7 billion.

An NBA Team

When Cuban moved to Dallas in 1982, he became a die-hard Dallas Mavericks fan. In 2000, he decided to buy the team about six weeks after he attended a game and mused that he could do a better job than the current owner. He paid $285 million for a majority stake in the team he still owns today.

Private Jets

Cuban has owned multiple private jets over the years, and at least two are currently in service. One is a Boeing 757, which he bought shortly before he acquired the Dallas Mavericks in 2000. He paid $36 million for the aircraft, which is used to transport the Mavericks to and from their games and other events.

He also owns a Gulfstream G550 for his own use, which he acquired for $40 million in 1999 — right after he sold Broadcast.com to Yahoo and became a billionaire.

A Tiny Texas Town

In December 2021, Cuban bought the town of Mustang, Texas, which is about 60 miles south of Dallas and has a miniscule population of 23. He paid $2 million for the 77-acre town, which he purchased from a friend who was dying of cancer to help out his family.

Various Investments

Being a Shark on “Shark Tank” exposes Cuban to plenty of investment opportunities. The billionaire has invested in various businesses that have been pitched over the 12 years he’s been a part of the popular TV show, including food companies like Unreal Deli, Snacklins and Pan’s Mushroom Jerky.

Mark Cuban Cost Plus Drug Company

Cuban is the co-founder of Cost Plus Drug Company, which he launched in 2016. The company provides low-cost versions of high-cost generic drugs.

Mark Cuban explains why he sold his majority stake of the Dallas Mavericks

DALLAS — Mark Cuban sees a future of NBA ownership where the advantages will be in real estate.

The high-profile billionaire says that’s why he sold his majority stake in the Dallas Mavericks to a pair of families with strong ties to the hotel and casino industry.

The NBA on Wednesday approved Cuban’s sale of a controlling interest in the Mavericks to the Adelson and Dumont families, who run Las Vegas Sands Corp.

The deal was approved just shy of a month since  Miriam Adelson and Sivan and Patrick Dumont announced their intention to buy  the club. The purchase is in the valuation range of $3.5 billion.

Patrick Dumont, Adelson’s son-in-law and president and chief operating officer of Las Vegas Sands, will serve as Mavericks governor.  Adelson  is the widow of casino magnate Sheldon Adelson.

Cuban will be the alternate governor with a 27% stake in the club and will maintain control of basketball operations. He made it clear there were no plans for the franchise to leave Dallas.

“The advantage is what can you build and where and you need to have somebody who’s really, really good at that,” Cuban said before the Mavs’ game against Cleveland on Wednesday night. “Patrick and Miriam, they’re the best in the world at what they do. Literally, around the world.

“When you get a world-class partner who can come in and grow your revenue base and you’re not dependent on things that you were in the past, that’s a huge win,” Cuban said.

Miriam Adelson is the controlling shareholder of Las Vegas Sands Corp., a publicly traded Las Vegas company that built the Venetian and Palazzo resorts but now only has casino operations in Macau and Singapore. Sheldon Adelson, the founder of Las Vegas Sands, died in 2021 at age 87.

“Through our commitment and additional investment in the team, we look forward to partnering with Mark Cuban to build on the team’s success and legacy in Dallas and beyond,” the Adelson and Dumont families said in a statement. “The goal is to win and to have a team that proudly represents the greater DFW area and serves as a strong and valuable member of the local community.”

Cuban said when he bought the Mavericks in 2000, he had the advantage of understanding technology. He became a billionaire when the radio internet streaming company he co-founded was bought by Yahoo.

Now, the future of media rights deals is in question. Diamond Sports, the company that owns the regional sports network that carries the Mavericks, is in bankruptcy proceedings.

Cuban said the sale makes revenue from media rights deals much less of a concern for the Mavericks.

“Financially, we’re in a far better position this afternoon than we were yesterday afternoon to be able to compete like that,” Cuban said.

The 65-year-old insisted he would have the final say in the hiring and firing of coaches, and the signing of free agents, “unless we’re going to go hire somebody that cost $300 million a year.”

And Cuban said spending to keep the team competitive won’t be an issue with Patrick Dumont.

“He basically said, ‘Just do what you’ve got to do. I want to win,’” Cuban said.

Gambling isn’t legal in Texas , and efforts to legalize it face steep odds. Still, Miriam Adelson has made no secret of her push to bring casino gambling to the Lone Star State.

She pumped more than $2 million last year into a political action committee, called Texas Sands, which donated lavishly to state legislators and swarmed the GOP-controlled Capitol with lobbyists. She gave an additional $1 million separately to Republican Gov. Greg Abbott.

But the spending blitz failed to deliver a breakthrough this year in the Texas Legislature, where resistance to legalizing casinos runs deep.

Asked how active he would be in trying to get gambling legalized in Texas, Cuban said, “As active as I need to be because I think it’s the right thing for the state of Texas.”

“Honestly, I don’t care so much about sports betting,” Cuban said. “If you look at destination resorts and casinos, the casino part of it is tiny, relative to the whole bigger destination aspect of it. Could you imagine building the Venetian in Dallas, Texas? That would just change everything.”

Dallas was one of the worst franchises in pro sports in the 1990s but turned into one of the best under Cuban, with a lot of help from star forward Dirk Nowitzki — now a member of the Basketball Hall of Fame and the leader of the team that won the 2011 NBA championship.

A self-professed basketball junkie who graduated from Indiana University, Cuban is almost always courtside for Mavericks games. He still will be.

“It’s a partnership,” Cuban said. “They’re not basketball people. I’m not real estate people. That’s why I did it. I could have gotten more money from somebody else. I’ve known these guys for a long time. They’re great at the things I’m not good at.”

The Frugal Philosophy of Mark Cuban: Yachts and House Cleaners Are Not on the List

the-frugal-philosophy-of-mark-cuban:-yachts-and-house-cleaners-are-not-on-the-list

Mark Cuban , the billionaire entrepreneur and celebrated startup investor, is renowned not only for his business acumen but also for his distinctive perspective on luxury spending. While he has made substantial acquisitions such as a Dallas mansion and private jets, Cuban distinguishes himself by drawing a firm line against certain extravagances. This article delves into Cuban’s frugal philosophy, his preference for privacy, and his unwavering commitment to remaining true to his roots.

A Simplicity-Driven Path

Cuban’s choice to eschew specific luxury services doesn’t stem from a sense of frugality, but rather from his yearning for simplicity. Despite his substantial wealth, Cuban and his family opt to undertake their daily tasks, including laundry and cooking. This hands-on approach enables them to preserve a semblance of normalcy and privacy , a value deeply cherished by Cuban. By personally engaging in these daily routines, he not only retains his privacy but also finds fulfillment in such activities.

“I like the privacy,” Cuban emphasizes, highlighting his preference for maintaining control over these aspects of his life. He expresses a strong sentiment against surrendering privacy for convenience.

Moreover, by partaking in these everyday chores, Cuban remains tethered to his humble beginnings, avoiding the allure of letting his wealth define his identity. He continues to lead a life he enjoyed even during times when he faced financial challenges, underlining that he still derives joy and satisfaction from simple pleasures.

Nurturing Authentic Bonds

Beyond his affinity for a simple lifestyle, Cuban underscores the importance of personal connections. He consciously refrains from surrounding himself solely with new friends brought about by his newfound wealth. Instead, he maintains enduring friendships forged during his formative years in Dallas and Indiana. These longstanding companionships are characterized by shared memories and unwavering camaraderie.

“Most of my friends are guys that I moved to Dallas with or friends in Indiana from school,” Cuban reveals, emphasizing the value of preserving connections that have stood the test of time.

In a world where wealth can change dynamics, Cuban’s unaltered approach to relationships underscores his commitment to authentic, meaningful connections. His steadfastness in nurturing relationships that predate his billionaire status reflects his loyalty and underscores his genuineness.

Wealth and Compassion

Mark Cuban’s approach to wealth diverges from common psychological notions. Research suggests that as an individual’s wealth increases, their compassion and empathy often wane. However, Cuban appears to defy this trend. His commitment to simplicity and personal connections might contribute to his ability to preserve his compassion and empathy despite his elevated financial standing.

Psychological science theorizes that intermittent reality checks can help reinstate egalitarianism and empathy among the affluent. Cuban’s philosophy aligns harmoniously with these principles, indicating that his deliberate choices sustain his empathy and connectedness.

Balancing Luxury and Values

While Cuban demonstrates selectivity in luxury spending, he does indulge in certain extravagances. Ownership of multiple houses and private jets forms part of his indulgence. His decision to acquire a private jet reflects his prioritization of time over material possessions. The jet, according to Cuban, symbolizes the purchase of time, the most valuable asset in his eyes.

“Buying a private jet was my all-time goal because the asset I value the most is time, and that bought me time,” Cuban articulates, providing insight into his rationale.

Despite the privileges afforded by wealth, Cuban remains unwavering in upholding his core values. His capacity to seamlessly integrate luxury while sustaining a frugal mindset embodies his balance between opulence and authenticity.

A Commitment to Identity

Mark Cuban’s journey illustrates that wealth need not alter an individual’s fundamental character. Despite his billionaire status, he remains grounded, committed to privacy, and dedicated to enduring connections. By staunchly resisting the pressure of allowing wealth to define him, Cuban offers a blueprint for aspiring entrepreneurs and those aspiring to remain true to their values amidst achievement.

“When I was broke, I had a blast. I loved my life…I was still having fun,” Cuban reminisces, reinforcing that his joy transcends financial circumstances.

Jerry Katz, one of Cuban’s childhood friends, attests that despite the evolution, Cuban remains “still the same guy.” Cuban’s unwavering authenticity echoes that even in the face of immense wealth, staying true to oneself is the ultimate testament of character.

How much of the Dallas Mavericks does Mark Cuban still own? Who is the majority owner now?

I n 2000 American businessman Mark Cuban purchased a majority stake in the Dallas Mavericks . At the time the Mavs were a fairly unappealing prospect, with just one division title in their 20-year history and a win percentage of just 40%.

Since then, however, Dallas has become a real force in the NBA , winning a further four division titles (2007, 2010, 2021, 2024), two conference titles (2006, 2011) and their first-ever championship in 2011 . Dallas look well-placed to go deep in the playoffs again this year but have had a major change of ownership.

In December Mark Cuban, who has been credited with helping the team’s dramatic improvement, sold a 73% stake in the Dallas Mavericks to Miriam Adelson and Sivan and Patrick Dumont .

The Adelson and Dumont families are thought to have paid around $3.5 billion for a controlling share of the Mavericks . Cuban retains a 27% stake in the team and remains in charge of the basketball operations.

Why did Mark Cuban sell his stake in the Dallas Mavericks?

The Pittsburgh-born entrepreneur is not short on business ventures. He is the co-owner of 2929 Entertainment, the founder of AXS TV and HDNet and a prolific investor through the television show Shark Tank. He even owns the town of Mustang in Texas , which he bought for $2 million in 2021.

With all that going on, Cuban decided that he need to bring in fresh cash and greater experience to help his forays in the real estate business. The Adelson and Dumont families made their money in casino and hotel businesses and Cuban said that he was excited to bring their skills and experience on board.

“The advantage is what can you build and where and you need to have somebody who’s really, really good at that,” Cuban said when the deal was announced. “ Patrick and Miriam, they’re the best in the world at what they do. Literally, around the world . When you get a world-class partner who can come in and grow your revenue base and you’re not dependent on things that you were in the past, that’s a huge win.”

Entrepreneur. Tech Giant. Shark. Billionaire. Genius. These are just a few words that describe the one and only, Mark Cuban. The master of tech and business continually increases his value year-over-year. But we’re curious, where does someone with all the money in the world live? Probably in a ridiculously big mansion, right? You’re in luck because we have all the details on Mark Cuban house!

Where Does Mark Cuban Live?

Mark Cuban owns a a sprawling 23,676 square-foot estate in Dallas, TX as well as a modern mansion in Laguna Beach that he purchased for a whopping $19,000,000 in 2018. See photos of both homes below!

Mark Cuban House Dallas (Current)

Mark Cuban lives in Preston Hollow, a very wealthy neighborhood of Dallas, Texas. Other notable residents of the famous town include former President George W. Bush and pro golfer Jordan Spieth . You may even find a bunch of Dallas Cowboys living there from time-to-time.

Cuban’s single-family home is fit for a billionaire. Built in 1997, the 23,676 square-foot mansion sits on 7 acres and has ten bedrooms and 16 bathrooms. It’s valued at an astonishing $19 million and spans a massive portion of the block where it sits. He paid $17.6 million in 1999.

As you drive into the gates, there’s a multiple-car garage to the right. It looks more like a house – not very garage-y! The main house wraps around a large driveway where a fountain sits in the center.

The backyard is HUGE – from the full-sized tennis court to the pool and pool house, there is no lack of play time and space for Mark’s kids. The backyard is also home to a guests house in the far right corner of the property. Again, it looks more like a full-size “normal person” house instead of a guest house.

The inside of the home is quite mysterious. What we do know is that as soon as he bought it he immediately installed a state-of-the-art sound system. We also know that the home has a wine cellar and 5 wet bars. Sounds like quite the party!

Oh, and his home office. It’s kinda messy…well, super messy.

Cuban came in with his signature enthusiasm and assertiveness and whipped the franchise into shape. He changed the culture of the team. He drafted and traded for new players. He built a new arena. He would sit courtside among the fans instead of in a box. Dallas was completely on board.

What does mark cuban do for the mavericks now after selling the majority of the franchise, share this article.

Mavericks star Luka Doncic is arguably the best player in the 2024 NBA Finals. But the most recognizable person in the series is Mark Cuban.

The businessman was the longtime principal owner and current minority of the Dallas Mavericks. After purchasing a majority stake of the franchise back in 2000, he helped lead them win the NBA championship in 2011.

But then in November 2023, seemingly out of nowhere, fans learned that Cuban was beginning to sell a majority stake of the team to Las Vegas Sands casino owner Miriam Adelson and her son-in-law Patrick Dumont. He also announced that he would no longer co-host  Shark Tank  on NBC.

The league later approved the sale for 73 percent of the controlling asset. This gave the family majority ownership and the right to serve as governors for the franchise.

RELATED: Mark Cuban sold a majority stake of the Mavericks while keeping control of the team and fans are shocked

Here is what we wrote at the time the surprising deal was first reported:

This is “one of the most unique setups” in league history because Cuban will retain his shares in the organization and he will also maintain “full control and final say” when it comes to basketball operations.

Cuban still owns 27 percent of the Mavericks and oversees basketball operations for the organization.

Despite not having the same financial control, you will see still him around at Dallas games. He has reiterated that he remains fully on-board with this NBA team ( via PEOPLE ):

“I’m still actively involved in the basketball side,” he says. “So yeah, I’m all in on the Mavs still. You’ll see me at games yelling and screaming at the refs, yelling and screaming for the Mavs. So that hasn’t changed at all.”

While he is still found sitting by the court and is undeniably still the face of the franchise, he no longer has the role as the controlling governor.

The first season of this new experience is a success, though, as Dallas won the Western Conference Finals and will have a chance to take home the Larry O’Brien Trophy.

Mavericks' Mark Cuban no longer has control of basketball operations, and why this is good for Dallas' future

Cuban sold a majority stake in the mavericks in november 2023.

mark-cuban-mavericks-g.jpg

The sting of not winning the NBA Finals will linger for the Dallas Mavericks , but just as swiftly as the Boston Celtics took care of them in five games to claim their 18th championship, Dallas must now turn its attention towards the future. Specifically free agency, and how to improve the roster around Luka Doncic and Kyrie Irving with hopes of trying to get back to the NBA Finals. As the Mavericks prepare for that, they'll be doing so with some organizational clarity, as ESPN's Tim MacMahon reports that Mark Cuban no longer has control of basketball operations.

This news comes after Cuban sold his majority stake  in the Mavericks back in November 2023 to the Adelson family, making Patrick Dumont the new governor of the Mavericks. When the deal was announced, it was reported that Cuban would retain control of basketball operations, while Dumont and the Adelsons handled the business side of things, like building a new arena for the Mavericks, something Cuban has been interested in for years. But seven months after that deal was finalized, it appears as though Cuban's role is becoming more diminished, which isn't necessarily a bad thing for the Mavericks.

Nico Harrison, the team's president of basketball operations and general manager, now reports directly to Dumont, after reporting to Cuban previously. And while Cuban's voice will still carry some weight in roster decisions, he may no longer have the final say on trades, draft selections or free agency signings. But while this may raise some eyebrows for those who associate Cuban with the lead decision maker for the Mavericks, Harrison has more than proved he has what it takes to build a championship-contending team. Harrison was the architect behind the trade deadline deals that catapulted the Mavericks on the path of the NBA Finals, acquiring PJ Washington and Daniel Gafford  while moving quickly to move Grant Williams , a free agency signing from last summer that proved unsuccessful.

While Harrison led the charge in signing Williams, too, his quick recognition that the deal didn't work out and his immediate addition of a better piece in Washington were savvy moves. He also pulled off the draft night deal that got the Mavericks off Davis Bertans' cumbersome contract and landed them Dereck Lively II, who, after a standout rookie season, is looking like a franchise center for the Mavericks.

Dumont rewarded Harrison's smart decisions over the last year by signing him to a contract extension right before the Finals started, ensuring he'll remain in charge of the Mavericks' future decisions. Coach Jason Kidd also received a contract extension, too. This gives the Mavericks a streamlined organizational chart after years of wondering who had the loudest voice in the war room when former president Donnie Nelson was in charge. There were  previous reports that former team executive Haralabos Voulgaris held influence and had Cuban's ear in major roster and lineup decisions made by the team when he was with the franchise from 2018 to 2021.

To put it plainly, Dallas' front office seemed a little dysfunctional. With Cuban taking a step back, Harrison will be able to assume full control of basketball decisions going forward. He's already got the co-sign of the most important player in the franchise -- Doncic. After the Mavericks lost to the Celtics in the Finals on Monday night, Doncic was asked how he felt about the state of the franchise.

"I feel great, we did some great moves," Doncic said. "I would say, you know, we've been together for five months. I'm proud of every guy that stepped on the floor, all the coaches and all the people behind. Obviously, we didn't win the Finals, but we did have a hell of a season, and I'm proud of every one of them."

Doncic's comments are a testament to the complete 180-degree turn the Mavericks have done over the past year, because of Harrison's roster moves. A year ago, there were reports that the Mavericks were concerned that Doncic could request a trade this summer if the team didn't make serious headway in competing for a championship. That was after a year in which the Mavericks failed to make the play-in tournament by waving the white flag with two games left in the regular season, sending them to the draft lottery. And while one Finals appearance won't be enough to keep a star like Doncic happy, it does buy Dallas some time to retool this roster to try and get back there with him at the center.

While Cuban's been the most recognizable team owner since buying the franchise in 2000, after years of stagnant results, it was clear there was a need for a change in terms of who was pulling the trigger on the Mavs roster moves. Now it sounds like that's happening, and it couldn't come at a better time for a Mavericks franchise that is on the upswing after making their first Finals appearance since 2011.

Out of Mavericks spotlight, Mark Cuban now aiming at ‘f—ing up’ pharmacy industry

As winter approaches his business empire, Mark Cuban still has a sharp stick in his hands, looking for a defenseless eye to poke.

“When I got into the NBA , half of the fun was just f—ing up the NBA,” Cuban said the other day. “The fines, everything. Everybody did it this way, and I was like, no. No. That’s no fun. And I bought this to have fun, and if you don’t like it, fine me. And it worked out great. Same thing with the pharmaceutical industry and health care. What can be better? Hopefully, we won a championship in 2011, and won, hopefully, a championship in 2024. That’s good. But f—ing up the pharmacy industry? Changed health care? Who was that guy? That’s the real deal. That’s a big check the box.”

Cuban, who sold controlling interest in the Dallas Mavericks late last year to the Adelson and Dumont families, which run the Las Vegas Sands Casino Company, is still around the Mavs. He still owns $1 billion or so worth of the team. It’s just that he’s 65, and he and his wife have three kids, and … life. Going toe to toe with the NBA about its officials and marketing is no longer front of mind. Time makes some things more important; other things less so.

When the Mavericks clinched the Western Conference title over the Minnesota Timberwolves , Cuban’s absence from the center of the trophy ceremony was noticeable.

“They did look over, and (TV presenter) Ernie Johnson looked at me, like, OK, you coming up?” Cuban said last week in Boston, where the Mavericks lost the first two games of the NBA Finals against the Boston Celtics before losing again Wednesday in Dallas.

“And I was like, this is Patrick (Dumont)’s moment,” Cuban said. “I don’t care about that s—. It’s just like, when we won (in 2011), who did I give the trophy to? (Former Mavs owner) Donald Carter.  This is (Dumont’s) first time. I’ve been there. I didn’t need it. I was standing right behind him. I was enjoying every moment. I’ve got my kids. I didn’t need to be a part of it. I’ve done it. I want to do it again.”

(Remember, this was before Game 2. The Mavericks ’ title dreams are now in a 3-0 hole, with Dallas needing to beat Boston on Friday at American Airlines Center to stave off elimination.)

Cuban’s spending just as much time these days with his two-year-old Mark Cuban Cost Plus Drugs Company, a direct-to-consumer business with the simple goal of dramatically reducing the cost of prescription drugs. An easy lift for the “Shark Tank” star, right? Take on an industry that did $364 billion in revenues in the United States in 2022, per Statista. Challenge an industry that is literally called Big Pharma because of its seemingly impenetrable maze of regulations and hidden costs that the U.S. federal government has spent decades trying to tame, with little success.

“It’s the easiest industry I’ve been in to disrupt,” Cuban said.

Cost Plus Drugs operates on a simple philosophy: Buy or produce tons of mostly generic drugs, add a small markup, then sell the drugs directly to consumers. But Cost Plus Drugs states all of the costs up front, so customers aren’t hit with the teeth-rattling sticker shock all of us endure when we go to the local pharmacy to pick up our various pills and medications — even after our copays.

“The thing about the drug industry isn’t the Big Pharma companies; it’s the fact that it’s opaque,” Cuban said. “There’s no transparency whatsoever. When you get a prescription, you have no idea what you might pay, other than your copay. You have no idea what your employer is paying or whoever you have insurance with. Your employer has no idea what they’re going to pay. The manufacturer has no idea that you got a prescription from. No idea. Nobody knew anything.”

Whether he’s truly disrupting the business on a large scale or has simply staked out a niche corner of a sprawling, untamed boulevard that will go right on steamrolling most individual customers and businesses with huge costs for medicines is likely not going to be final for years. But Cuban does have supporters.

Different independent studies have determined that the practices of Cuban’s company could, if utilized at larger scale , save consumers hundreds of millions of dollars.

“I can tell you from my own personal experience as a consumer, that when I switched my prescriptions over to Mark Cuban, to try it, it saved me, last year, $700,” said Monique Whitney, executive director of Pharmacists United for Truth and Transparency , an advocacy group for independent pharmacists and pharmacy owners that works as an industry watchdog.

(To be transparent — pardon the pun — PUTT has skin in the game: Independent pharmacies have been decimated by Big Pharma, with the number of independent pharmacies falling by 50 percent nationwide since 1980.  The latest survey covering 2022 puts the number of independent U.S. pharmacies today at around 19,000.)

“I’m just on basic maintenance medication, ones that aren’t supposed to be very expensive,” Whitney said. “That was a real surprise for me, that that happened. His model, which is truly a cost-plus transparent model — and there’s smaller pharmacies that are doing something similar — I can tell you from personal experience as a consumer, that has worked. Unfortunately, it shouldn’t be complicated, but these things get complicated fast.”

Cuban started Cost Plus Drugs in 2022 after being approached by Dr. Alex Oshmyansky, a radiologist who graduated from college at 18 and who wanted to counter the pattern of egregious profiteering and price gouging of consumers by operators like former Turing Pharmaceuticals CEO Martin Shkreli. Oshmyansky emailed Cuban looking for funding help. Cuban responded, offering to bankroll the whole operation.

“I came in, Alex and I got together, and we were like, OK, this is the way it would work for us,” Cuban said. “We’re going to publish our costs on the website. We’re going to show our markup. And we’re going to publish our price list of everything, all 2,500 drugs, because no one’s ever done it before. And by being transparent, people will trust us. And that’s exactly what happened.”

Cuban said more than two million people have used his company since its founding, and it now buys or produces more than 2,500 drugs, most of them generics. He said he’s willing to deficit spend for the foreseeable future.

“We’re not losing that much money,” he said. “And if we keep going the way we’re going, I’ll make a little money. And we’ll use it to add more drugs to our factories, so we can make more.”

does mark cuban own a yacht

To understand what Cuban is doing, you have to wade — it’ll only be for a few minutes — into the byzantine world of the U.S. pharmaceutical industry.

Drug companies produce medicines. The ones that are cutting edge, newest to the market, are brand-name drugs. Because they’re cutting-edge, drug companies charge everyone more to buy them. Eventually, though, many, though not all, drugs can be copied, with their basic ingredients and effectiveness recreated by other companies. Those drugs are generics.

For example: Aspirin is a pain reliever and inflammation reducer. Bayer first mass-produced the drug under its brand name at the turn of the 20th century, selling a kajillion or so bottles. But, eventually, other companies reproduced the pain-reducing mix of chemicals that aspirin comprises and today sell aspirin in pharmacies as a generic drug, almost always at a lower price. Brand names and generics both have to be approved by the Food and Drug Administration and have to have essentially the same effectiveness as a medicine.

In the last 60 years or so, so-called Pharmacy Benefit Managers (PBMs) have emerged as the key conduit between drug companies, insurance companies and consumers. The Harrison Narcotics Act of 1915 prohibited anyone who manufactured drugs from being able to sell them in the United States without government approval and required people to begin getting prescriptions from doctors for narcotics that were still viewed as having accepted medicinal purposes. That requirement was extended to non-narcotic drugs in 1951.

Within a few years of that second requirement, PBMs began to emerge. They served, and serve, as middlemen that help manage prescription drug benefits for insurance companies and negotiate prices for drugs for consumers, as well as help determine what drugs are available through your insurance plans . Because they have so much influence, PBMs get paid both by insurers who use their services and through rebates they negotiate with the drug companies, by retaining some of the payment rates the companies pay to pharmacies and insurers. But the PBMs also create pharmacy networks and make deals with them about what drugs they can carry.

And, often, PBMs keep a significant share of those rebates for themselves, rather than passing on savings to consumers. Smaller PBMs do more transparent “passthroughs,” where the lion’s share of the rebates are directly passed back to consumers — and don’t add any additional markups to the cost of the medications. But they usually represent companies with very low numbers of employees.

Currently, three PBMs — CVS Caremark, Express Scripts and OptumRX — control about 80 percent of the marketplace. Three smaller PBMs control almost another 10 percent. The Federal Trade Commission has an ongoing investigation into the business practices of the PBMs.

There’s nothing illegal in the PBM’s practices. They negotiate with the drug companies and insurers, not with you. The question is, how much does their business actually save consumers? That’s the crack companies like Cost Plus Drugs seek to exploit.

“When I looked at my insurance, when we started, I said, OK, I’m going to look at my stuff, my drug costs (for the Mavericks),” Cuban said. “They charge me, for just generics that cost over $30, when we first started Cost Plus, the Mavs paid $169,000. And the (same drugs under) Cost Plus Drugs would have been $19,000. It was my money; we self-insure. So I was writing the checks. And I was like, I feel like a f—ing moron. Because why are we doing this? The truth is, nobody knows.”

Cuban opened a new robotic plant in the Deep Ellum neighborhood in Dallas earlier this year that will produce injectable drugs like Pitocin (which helps induce labor) and Ephedrine that are in shorter supply.

“There’s hospitals that can’t get this stuff,” Cuban said. “The companies other than us, who made it before us, they were like, OK, we’re gonna gouge. Not too bad, to get us in trouble, but just enough to make us more money. We’re like, f— that. …We can make two million bottles a year, and we’re going to charge ’em a lot less. So they’re rushing to our door. We don’t just deal with patients directly, on cash, but we deal with insurance companies, we deal with hospitals. We work with everybody. And it’s just been amazing.”

At some point in the near future, though, Cuban and Cost Plus Drugs will have to wade deeper into getting more brand-name drugs under their umbrella to maximize their impact.

“For Mark Cuban to be totally effective in what he wants to do, he also needs to find a way to bring in branded medications,” said PUTT president Deborah Keaveny, who owns a pharmacy in Minnesota.

“Because of the relationship between the manufacturers and the Pharmacy Benefit Managers and the whole rebate game, they’re not likely to allow him into that arena, because he would disrupt the revenue streams of that market,” she added. “As far as how many dollars, what his financial impact is, I can’t really attest to that. But I can say that people are taking notice. The Pharmacy Benefit Managers are also taking notice, because they seem to have launched their own cost plus networks in there. I would argue, if they were so good at saving everybody money, for the insurance premiums that people are paying, then why do they even need a cost plus?”

Cuban said he’s in this new business for the long haul. Hey, it’s Big Pharma. You can’t guarantee he’ll come out on top. But given his track record, and his willingness to pay fines during the David Stern era for spouting off about almost anything — and eventually winning out — you shouldn’t dismiss his chances, either.

“If I can get CEOs and benefits people at those big companies to just act in their self-interest, financially, and the wellness of their companies, it’s easy,” Cuban said.

“So when I sit with a CEO, and they say, ‘No, we have a great (program), our benefits people feel.’ I say, ‘No, just look at this, this, this and this.’ Their contract has all this nebulous language where they charge you all these different fees that you don’t even know they charge you. They just net it out, or they work through an intermediary. They say they give you all these rebates and passthroughs, but they’re buying it from their own company, who marked it up. So yeah, they’re giving it to you, but they’re keeping it over here in the right pocket, and they’re giving it to you on the left. So all I have to do is go to the head of The New York Times, and the CEO, and say let’s just look at your contract, and I’m going to show you all the problems.”
