Former mason swimmer living out childhood dream during us olympic trials.
The latest breaking updates, delivered straight to your email inbox.
The Olympic swimming trials are happening right up the road in Indianapolis this week.
Three boys who swam for the Mason Manta Rays have a real shot at making team USA this year. One of those boys is already on the road to Paris. Carson Foster from Sycamore is in , but his childhood friend, Adam Chaney, is still trying to make it to Paris.
Chaney’s grandma, Susan Runyan, says her husband knew this day would come.
“He would say, someday someone's going to walk through that gate, and they're going to ask to see the pool where Adam started his career," Runyan said.
From the doggie paddle at 5 years old to "dogging" his opponents and swimming for the University of Florida, Adam, the kid from Mason, Ohio, has a real shot at living out his childhood dream.
A drawing Adam made when he was just seven shows him swimming in the Olympics.
That picture is now on the back of their Team Chaney, USA shirts. But mom Cheryl, big sister Blaise and grandma Susan remember the hard work and sacrifice it's taken to get here.
His grandma recalls it well, saying, “There were many times I'd be looking out here and he was 6, 7 maybe 8-years old and he'd be doing laps, he'd be practicing his strokes he'd be diving and he just loved it. He just loved being in the water and you could tell at an early age."
Cheryl says Adam was just an all-around great athlete.
"Adam was such a good athlete in all the different sports, and he liked to play baseball, football, basketball, and so he wanted to play those things, but he still wanted to swim," Cheryl Chaney said.
When Adam was a freshman in high school, he committed to swimming and never looked back.
“His personality fits swimming so well because he just doesn't dwell on the emotional side of it,” Cheryl said.
In 2021, Adam made the Olympic trials for the first time. He surprised even his biggest cheerleaders.
“It was very exciting to be there, and he really was a dark horse, but he got fifth in the 50-free, so that was exciting," Cheryl Chaney said.
Cheryl, still smiling, is hoping for a similar surprise at this year’s Olympic trials. This year, Adam is back, and his mom says he’s even more determined.
“His coaches say that he has a shot, so everything has to go right," Cheryl Chaney said.
His older sis knows how tough it’s going to be.
"You have to execute your start perfectly. Your turns have to be perfect. Your underwater haw to be perfect. You have to take the right amount of breaths. And one of those things, being a tenth of a second off, is the difference between winning and losing a race," Blaise Cittadino said.
They know it's going to be tough.
“If he made it, we’d probably book flights to Paris and take out personal loans buying tickets,” Cittadino said.
If he makes it, the first guy Adam signed an autograph for all those years ago, on a hat, his grandfather, will be watching from above.
Adam Chaney has struggled in Indianapolis so far. He hit the lane in the men's 100 backstroke final Monday night and failed to make qualify for the 100 freestyle Tuesday.
But he still has one more chance to make it to Paris. He has Wednesday off to rest and then back in the pool Thursday, trying to qualify for the 50 freestyle.
Katia Gallegos didn't need long to arrive exactly where she's always wanted to be.
Through her time as a star point guard at Franklin, then UTEP , then Tulsa, Gallegos' goal was to play professionally in Mexico, preferably as close to El Paso. That means Chihuahua City's Adelitas de Chihuahua in Liga Caliente.mx LNBP Femenil, and while Gallegos is still a way from achieving the stardom she's enjoyed at every level up to now, her professional journey has begun.
She and her team just returned from sweeping a weekend series at Halcones de Xalapa that kept them in second place in the nine-team league and kept the goal of back-to-back championships alive.
"It's coming along well," said Gallegos, who graduated from Tulsa this past spring after playing her last two college years there. "I'm just getting a few minutes, but I'm learning what it's like to be a pro.
"This is always where I wanted to play. I wanted to be close to home, in front of my family. This is really always where I wanted to be."
The Juárez native's addition to the Adelitas was announced in May.
"It was emotional. I'm very proud of my country and my roots, so playing here in front of my people from Chihuahua is great," said Gallegos, who has played for Mexican age group national teams throughout her career.
Gallegos particularly enjoys being a professional and not having the distractions that come with college and high school basketball.
"It's much nicer, it's all about basketball," Gallegos said. "That's my whole focus; that's what I do now. This level is way more physical. There are ex-WNBA players in this league; it's a really high level of play. I'm just trying to come in with energy and help how I can."
She's a backup point guard for an elite with two more weekend series before the playoffs, where they will try to defend their Liga Caliente.mx LNBP Femenil championship.
"That's the goal, to win another championship," Gallegos said. "I'm doing whatever I can to help us get it."

Similar yachts![]() New listings![]() This couple lives in a vintage 940-square-foot trailer by the beach for $5,100 a month: It's 'the California dream'W hen my husband Brian first told me he's from Laguna Beach, it took everything in me to play it cool. "Oh, is that near Los Angeles?" I asked. Like most elder millennials, I knew exactly where Laguna Beach was. I'd seen every episode of the reality show (I was an LC with a Kristin haircut) and was a superfan of "The OC" to boot. (Seth and Summer forever!) I don't know why I pretended. Turns out, Brian's a Seth-and-Summer stan, too. I never imagined we'd end up living in the land of beachside cottages and sun-drenched ocean coves I'd seen on TV. But in 2021, we decided to leave the Bay Area and spend a couple months in Brian's hometown. We both work remotely — I'm a writer and he's in tech sales — so why not? We've been here ever since. Today, we live in an old-school, 940-square-foot, aluminum-sided trailer across the street from the beach. Deciding we wanted to stay in Laguna Beach wasn't hard — I mean, it's beautiful, sunny, laid back, and has a thriving art scene. But figuring out a long-term living situation in such a pricey area required us to get creative. Finding a creative way to live in Laguna BeachThe median home price in Laguna Beach hovers around $3 million and the median monthly rent is over $8,000 . Brian and I were paying $6,200 a month for our short-term rental, a steep price we could stomach for a couple of months but not something we could sustain. Luckily, we discovered a quirky little neighborhood tucked away in a picturesque canyon across the street from the ritziest hotel in town. It's filled with mobile homes that sell for as little as $150,000. DON'T MISS: The ultimate guide to becoming a master communicator and public speaker Brian and I are no strangers to alternative abodes — we'd previously lived aboard a 46-foot motor yacht for three years — so the concept of a house on wheels didn't intimidate us. When you purchase a trailer in this mobile home community, the structure is yours but you rent the land it sits on. We decided to look at purchasing a mobile home as a hybrid solution — part owning, part renting — all for less than what either traditional option would cost. We paid $212,500 for the trailer using money we'd saved up after negotiating a $5,000 credit from the sellers when the home inspection uncovered some necessary repairs. After living on a boat, we didn't have much more than a TV and a mattress to start off with. In order to rebuild the unstable back deck, fence the yard, re-do the landscaping, renovate the kitchen, and furnish the home, we took out a $150,000 home equity loan against the trailer. All told, we're currently paying about $5,148 a month, including:
We're eager to repay the home equity loan to bring our monthly cost of living down even more and hope to do so within the next two years. Take a look inside our 'vintage' Laguna Beach trailerOur two-bedroom, two-bathroom home was built in the 1960s. The exterior is original and we love the vintage look. There's no garage, just a carport, so we built a storage shed in the side yard for camping gear and holiday decorations. In our carport, you'll find a golf cart, which is our favorite way to get around the neighborhood, pick up groceries or zip across the street to the beach. When it's not practical to use the golf cart, we have a regular car and a van for transporting Brian's surfboards around town. We put our own stamp on the kitchen, adding butcher block counters, a tiled backsplash, a dishwasher, and a wine fridge. There are no closets — not one! — in this house, so we had to get creative with storage: My wardrobe is in the living room, our towels are stored in a buffet in my office area, and pots and pans go in the entertainment center. It's unconventional, but we make it work. Though I have a real desk, I often write on the couch with our our 15-year-old dachshund mix Indy (short for Indiana Jones). Brian usually works in the second bedroom-turned-office so he can close the door while he's on calls. Sometimes he'll head outside. We went a little wild with our wallpaper (tropical everything!), including in the primary bedroom. There's something so fun about knowing that this place is ours to decorate however we please. The yard is what sold us on this place. It has an outdoor shower and a dining area, and gets loads of sun. We added some tropical landscaping, a hot tub, Ping-Pong table, pizza oven, and a projector screen. I love sitting outside and watching the hummingbirds dance around our plants. A 'less stressful' version of the California dreamLiving in a house on wheels doesn't exempt us from the typical homeowner headaches. Since moving in, we've dealt with an ant infestation, tented for termites, and evicted a family of mice, and we're currently grappling with a gopher problem. But keeping our monthly housing costs low (for the area) makes tackling these issues less stressful. We often enjoy our morning coffee on the deck, take walks down to the beach, and unwind with an evening dip in the hot tub. We love watching Indy sunbathe on his favorite lounge chair, having friends over for outdoor pizza parties, taking the golf cart into town to grab dinner or hit up the annual Sawdust Art Festival , and turning on the fire pit while we watch a movie under the stars. In short, we couldn't be happier here. We've been in this home for two years now and we don't plan on moving anytime soon. It's getting harder to qualify without help from parentsCanadians 22 to 31 twice as likely to become homeowners if their parents own property. ![]() Social Sharing![]() Help from parents is increasingly becoming a deciding factor in who is able to realize their dream of owning a home and who is not. A report from Statistics Canada released last month found that as of the 2021 reference year — the latest available from the Canadian Housing Statistics Program — around one in six properties owned by buyers born in the 1990s were actually co-owned with their parents. Since this was the first Statistics Canada release on this topic, it's not known how this rate of co-ownership compares to earlier times, a spokesperson said. However, the report also cited CIBC data from 2021 that found almost 30 per cent of first-time home buyers that year received financial help from family, compared to 20 per cent in 2015.
An earlier StatsCan report also found that, as of 2021, adult children ages 22 to 31 were twice as likely to become homeowners themselves if their parents own property. None of this is a surprise to Paul Kershaw. He's a professor at the University of British Columbia's School of Population and Public Health and founder of think-tank and advocacy organization Generation Squeeze, which explores fairness between the generations — including in the housing market. "So when my mom started out in the housing market in the mid 1970s, it would have taken five years of full-time work for a typical young adult to save a 20 per cent down payment on an average-price home," Kershaw told Cost of Living . "If you flash forward to today, it's 17 years on average, 22 in B.C. and Ontario." As a result, those who can "are turning to the members in their family for whom rising home prices haven't been a hardship — they've been a boon," said Kershaw, who holds an interdisciplinary PhD in political science, law and economics. This reality leaves out a wide swath of young, would-be homeowners who don't have access to family money or credit, and also raises questions about risk for the older generations who want to help their kids but also support themselves through what may be many years of retirement. Help from familyChristian Kang, 29, counts himself lucky for being able to get support from his father to buy a condo a little more than a year ago. Even though he has a decent-paying job in finance, and had saved for quite a few years while living at home, he could still only qualify for a mortgage of around $400,000 — not enough to get a place in Toronto. Kang said when banks were hiking rates, "it was getting harder to qualify." "I thought I'd have a good amount for a larger mortgage, but it just turned out not to be the case," he said. "I had felt like I may be trapped renting forever."
But then he was given some money when his grandmother passed, and an offer of some additional assistance from his parents, who supplied the rest of the financing through their line of credit. That got him to the $680,000 he needed for his one-bedroom plus den, single-bath condo in midtown Toronto. Kang said he knows he's in the minority. "Most of my friends are renting," he said, and everyone Kang knows who has been able to get into the real estate market has had financial assistance from family. ![]() With student loans to pay off, Kealin Williams said she and her wife — who are both in their 30s — don't see how they can change their status as renters while living in Toronto, even once Williams completes her post-grad certificate in human resources and returns to full-time work. Williams says they talk about using her Irish passport to help them settle in a more affordable city somewhere in Europe. She compares her situation to that of her parents who, even on working-class salaries, were able to afford a home in Scarborough with four children. "Realistically, we're just kind of making ends meet in terms of living wages. And yeah, my wife works for a very large company and she has a pretty great salary," said Williams. "It's discouraging." ![]() A 2-job grind for a depositMatthew Booth, 29, purchased his first property earlier this month: a $415,000 two-bedroom, two-bath condo in Calgary where he's just started a new job as director of sales and marketing for a large hotel. But getting the money together without a big windfall from family was no easy feat, even in a real estate market that's not as red-hot as those in Toronto and Vancouver.
Previously working in less senior hospitality sales and marketing jobs in Jasper and Canmore — neither one inexpensive places to live — he took on second jobs in restaurants so he could save. In Jasper, for instance, "I wasn't making that much money as a sales co-ordinator," he said. "So I would go to that job, in the morning, 8:30 to 5 p.m., and then actually, right after work, I either walked or hopped on a bike and I'd go directly to a job in town." Four or five days a week, Booth would work as a server until about 10:30 p.m., before walking or biking home. On the savings side, he'd do things like max out his employer-matched RRSP program and, most recently, sublet the extra bedroom in the Canmore apartment he's been sharing with his girlfriend to squirrel away extra cash. Stuck at homeLiving in Toronto's East York neighbourhood, Emilie Fernandez is not sure how she's ever going to achieve what Booth has without starting over in another province. The 23-year-old has been working for the Ontario government since February 2023, and saving diligently thanks to living rent-free with her parents. She also lived at home during university, allowing her to complete her degree without student debt. But even with those things going for her, Fernandez said home ownership seems out of reach. She has explored qualifying for a mortgage with her partner, who is also living with his parents to save money. ![]() Even for the smallest studio condo, "what we do qualify for is easily about $200,000 to $300,000 short," said Fernandez. "We both work full time, so it's definitely frustrating knowing that what we could afford would be two or three hours outside of the city." If they want to move out of their parents' places and into a rental unit together, "we won't have the savings that we need. Rent right now is equivalent to a mortgage payment, if not more." ![]() Should I get a 30-year mortgage? | About ThatCautions for parents helping out. Kelly Ho, a financial planner in Vancouver, says parents who want to help their kids buy a home should be clear about the terms. For example, if cash toward a down payment is not a gift but a loan from the parents' home-equity line of credit, "make sure there's a solid loan agreement in place and a payment plan." If parents are co-signing, there's a risk to their own credit rating and financial security should the children default, she said. ![]() She suggests that before committing any form of assistance, parents put together a comprehensive financial plan for themselves until age 95 or beyond. "Obviously life expectancy has gone up, which also means that their long-term care needs might also go up."
Fernandez said she has no expectations that her parents should provide her with financial assistance to buy a home. But she does say she'd "rather the older generation change their mindset from 'look how good of a deal we got when we bought our house,' to 'look how poorly the next generations are set up for home ownership.'" Zurich joined Hong Kong and Singapore at the front of the ranking, joined by three other Swiss cities—Geneva, Basel, and Bern. New York was the highest-ranked U.S. city on the list, landing in seventh place, followed by London. The British capital bumped up to the eighth spot after coming in 17th last year. Rounding out the top 10 were Nassau, Bahamas, and Los Angeles , respectively. Interestingly, there were only seven U.S. cities that fell into the top 20, including Honolulu and San Francisco. “As U.S.-based companies continue to source talent globally, inflationary pressures may give some inbound foreign nationals pause to accept a position in some of the high-cost cities and metro areas in the U.S.,” Vince Cordova, partner and mobility advisory leader at Mercer US, explained to CNN Travel . At the same time, Toronto was named the most expensive city in Canada, while Sydney was the Pacific region’s costliest place for expats. Dubai, which landed in 15th place, jumped up three spots this year as the priciest city in the Middle East. The biggest differences compared to Mercer’s 2023 ranking were in Mexico. Mexico City climbed 46 spots to its current position at 33, while Monterrey went up 40 places to 115. Conversely, the survey found that cities with the lowest costs of living were Pakistan’s Islamabad and Nigeria’s Lagos and Abuja due to “currency depreciations.”
