Agamenticus Yacht Club team wins state sailing championship

Two of the Agamenticus Yacht Club's Race Team coaches temporarily changed roles to become competitors and won the Maine State Club 420 sailing championships, hosted by Prout's Neck Yacht Club, July 26th through the 28th.

Grace Gear and Calvin May enlisted University of New Hampshire Sailing Coach Diana Weidenbacker to temporarily take over their coaching responsibilities for the three-day regatta, allowing them to compete in the two-person Club 420 sailboat against eight of the athletes they normally coach as well as 37 other boats from around New England.

Weidenbacker was assisted by AYC staff member Erik Diehl as AYC sent 10 sailors and five boats to Prout's Neck for the event. In addition to her college coaching responsibilities, Weidenbacker is director of the UNH Community Sailing Centre and also coaches Mendum's Seacoast Sailing Team, a competitive spring race team composed of Seacoast area high school students.

Though they had never raced together, Gear and May have known each other for years through their sailing careers at AYC. Their familiarity and ability to work well together was evident throughout the regatta, as the pair consistently demonstrated superior tactics and boat speed, particularly on the upwind legs.

Gear will be starting her junior year studying biochemistry at UVM where she is also is a standout skipper on the sailing team. May finished high school this past spring graduating from Burke Mountain Academy and will be taking a post graduate year to hone his ski racing skills through a program in Norway.

The pair totaled 11 points to win the eight-race regatta with four firsts, two seconds and two third place finishes. Gear and May also received the "Judges Award" for distinguishing themselves with outstanding sportsmanship while racing on Saco Bay.

finishing second in the regatta with 24 points were Charlie Apolinsky and Brian Goldsmith racing for Southport Yacht Club and in third with 27 points were sisters Arden and Piper Carleton racing for Boothbay Harbor Yacht Club.

Other AYC sailors, many in their first season of racing, had exceptional showings as well. William Gear (Grace Gear's younger brother) and first-year racer Peter Latsilnik moved their boat up to a seventh place finish by winning the final race, 15 seconds ahead of the two sailors who normally coach them. John O'Rourke and Trey Penna finished the regatta in 12th. Charlie Newton and Max Petrillo finished in 32nd and first-year racers Lea Vera and Ally Latsilnik finished in 36th.

Agamenticus Yacht Club is a non-profit community centered sailing program located in York Harbor. Its mission is to sustain a community of families who enjoy being on the water. In addition to fielding a competitive racing team, AYC maintains a fleet of boats and has a very active junior summer sailing program focusing on safety, enjoyment, knowledge of sailing, and boat maintenance as well as adult sailing lessons and clinics.

Savvino-storozhevsky monastery and museum.

Savvino-Storozhevsky Monastery and Museum

Zvenigorod's most famous sight is the Savvino-Storozhevsky Monastery, which was founded in 1398 by the monk Savva from the Troitse-Sergieva Lavra, at the invitation and with the support of Prince Yury Dmitrievich of Zvenigorod. Savva was later canonised as St Sabbas (Savva) of Storozhev. The monastery late flourished under the reign of Tsar Alexis, who chose the monastery as his family church and often went on pilgrimage there and made lots of donations to it. Most of the monastery’s buildings date from this time. The monastery is heavily fortified with thick walls and six towers, the most impressive of which is the Krasny Tower which also serves as the eastern entrance. The monastery was closed in 1918 and only reopened in 1995. In 1998 Patriarch Alexius II took part in a service to return the relics of St Sabbas to the monastery. Today the monastery has the status of a stauropegic monastery, which is second in status to a lavra. In addition to being a working monastery, it also holds the Zvenigorod Historical, Architectural and Art Museum.

Belfry and Neighbouring Churches

mt agamenticus yacht club

Located near the main entrance is the monastery's belfry which is perhaps the calling card of the monastery due to its uniqueness. It was built in the 1650s and the St Sergius of Radonezh’s Church was opened on the middle tier in the mid-17th century, although it was originally dedicated to the Trinity. The belfry's 35-tonne Great Bladgovestny Bell fell in 1941 and was only restored and returned in 2003. Attached to the belfry is a large refectory and the Transfiguration Church, both of which were built on the orders of Tsar Alexis in the 1650s.

mt agamenticus yacht club

To the left of the belfry is another, smaller, refectory which is attached to the Trinity Gate-Church, which was also constructed in the 1650s on the orders of Tsar Alexis who made it his own family church. The church is elaborately decorated with colourful trims and underneath the archway is a beautiful 19th century fresco.

Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral

mt agamenticus yacht club

The Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral is the oldest building in the monastery and among the oldest buildings in the Moscow Region. It was built between 1404 and 1405 during the lifetime of St Sabbas and using the funds of Prince Yury of Zvenigorod. The white-stone cathedral is a standard four-pillar design with a single golden dome. After the death of St Sabbas he was interred in the cathedral and a new altar dedicated to him was added.

mt agamenticus yacht club

Under the reign of Tsar Alexis the cathedral was decorated with frescoes by Stepan Ryazanets, some of which remain today. Tsar Alexis also presented the cathedral with a five-tier iconostasis, the top row of icons have been preserved.

Tsaritsa's Chambers

mt agamenticus yacht club

The Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral is located between the Tsaritsa's Chambers of the left and the Palace of Tsar Alexis on the right. The Tsaritsa's Chambers were built in the mid-17th century for the wife of Tsar Alexey - Tsaritsa Maria Ilinichna Miloskavskaya. The design of the building is influenced by the ancient Russian architectural style. Is prettier than the Tsar's chambers opposite, being red in colour with elaborately decorated window frames and entrance.

mt agamenticus yacht club

At present the Tsaritsa's Chambers houses the Zvenigorod Historical, Architectural and Art Museum. Among its displays is an accurate recreation of the interior of a noble lady's chambers including furniture, decorations and a decorated tiled oven, and an exhibition on the history of Zvenigorod and the monastery.

Palace of Tsar Alexis

mt agamenticus yacht club

The Palace of Tsar Alexis was built in the 1650s and is now one of the best surviving examples of non-religious architecture of that era. It was built especially for Tsar Alexis who often visited the monastery on religious pilgrimages. Its most striking feature is its pretty row of nine chimney spouts which resemble towers.

Safety First!

Picture

  • All students and instructors are required to wear life jackets at all times when on our floats, in our boats, or on the water.
  • NOAA weather forecasts are checked every morning before class. In many classes, the students themselves participate in securing this information and posting it in the clubhouse. Lesson plans for the day are customized to suit the conditions.
  • Once a decision is made to get out on the water, the risk of deteriorating or threatening weather remains a crucial factor in deciding how many people, boats and equipment are deployed.
  • Staff maintain constant communication with one another through the use of hand held VHF radios, which they must have with them at all times. Additionally, we have a full time dock steward at the clubhouse 7 days a week who is an invaluable asset in managing the shore-based aspects of any type of emergency.
  • We strive to maintain connection and involvement with the parents of our young sailors. Knowing what you want for your child, understanding the level of risk with which you are comfortable as your child learns new skills, and knowing how you see them progressing in the program are all indirect, but important ways we create a safe, fun and productive experience for your son or daughter.
  • Use of club owned boats are restricted to those members who have been "certified" by our instructors in the operation of the boat/s they wish to use. Instructors may require a member to take one or more private sailing lessons to refine the skills necessary for unsupervised access to a particular boat.
