Former Oceanis

"The basis for reflection on a Cruiser would be the Idylle [...].  François Chalain would choose Philippe Briand 3 and, in a few months, they would create the Oceanis 350 and then the 430. The wager paid off, and success was instant. The production lines would fill up again."

Trump Rants About Sharks, and Everyone Just Pretends It’s Normal

Sign up for The Decision , a newsletter featuring our 2024 election coverage.

Hours before meeting with his probation officer about his recent felony convictions, a leading candidate for U.S. president went on a bizarre rant about sharks.

Sharks, Donald Trump claimed , were attacking more frequently than usual ( not true ) and posed a newfound risk because boats were being required to use batteries (not true), which would cause them to sink because they were too heavy (really, really not true—the world’s heaviest cruise ship, the Icon of the Seas, managed to stay afloat because of the laws of physics despite weighing more than 550 million pounds).

Trump, undeterred by truth or science, invoked his intellectual credentials by mentioning his “relationship to MIT.” (Trump’s uncle was a professor at the university, pioneering rotational radiation therapy, which seems a somewhat tenuous connection for conferring shark- or battery-related expertise to his nephew.) If Trump had been able to ask his uncle about the risks of being electrocuted by a boat battery because, as Trump put it, “there’s a lot of electric current coming through that water,” perhaps the professor would have informed him that high-capacity batteries would rapidly discharge in seawater and pose minuscule risk to humans because the water conducts electricity far better than human bodies do.

Sharks appear to have troubled Trump’s mind for years. On July 4, 2013, Trump twice tweeted about them, saying, “Sorry folks, I’m just not a fan of sharks—and don’t worry, they will be around long after we are gone.” Two minutes later, he followed that nugget of wisdom with: “Sharks are last on my list—other than perhaps the losers and haters of the World!”

[ McKay Coppins: Why attacks on Trump’s mental acuity don’t land ]

These deranged rants are tempting to laugh off. They’re par for the course. Trump is Trump. But Trump may also soon be the president of the United States. Imagine the response if Joe Biden had made the same rambling remarks, word for word. Consider this excerpt:

“I say, ‘What would happen if the boat sank from its weight and you’re in the boat and you have this tremendously powerful battery and the battery’s underwater, and there’s a shark that’s approximately 10 yards over there?’ By the way, a lot of shark attacks lately. Do you notice that? A lot of shark … I watched some guys justifying it today: ‘Well, they weren’t really that angry. They bit off the young lady’s leg because of the fact that they were not hungry, but they misunderstood who she was.’ These people are crazy.”

Coming from Biden, that exact statement might have prompted calls from across the political spectrum for him to drop out of the race. From Trump, it was a blip that barely registered. I’ve previously called this dynamic “the banality of crazy” : Trump’s ludicrous statements are ignored precisely because they’re so routine—and routine occurrences don’t drive the news. They are the proverbial “dog bites man” stories that get ignored by the press. Except that even this truism breaks down when it comes to the asymmetry between coverage of Trump and Biden: Based on Google News tallies, the news story about Biden’s dog biting a Secret Service agent spurred far more press coverage than Trump saying that he would order shoplifters to be shot without a trial if he became president.

[ Brian Klaas: Trump floats the idea of executing Joint Chiefs Chairman Milley ]

Still, Trump appears to be benefiting from the sheer superfluity of crazy. At rallies, the former president makes stream-of-consciousness statements that would raise questions about the mental acuity of anyone who said them at, say, the tail end of a night at a neighborhood bar, but that somehow don’t generate the same level of concern within the press or the Republican Party when Trump says them in front of a cheering crowd. By contrast, when Biden makes a gaffe—mixing up a name or a date rather than, for example, suggesting that boats sink because they’re heavy—questions arise about his mental fitness to be president. A president who occasionally misspeaks is far less worrying than one who purveys delusional fantasies and conspiracy theories. Biden may gaffe, but he lives in reality; Trump often doesn’t.

Today, a prominent New York Times columnist called on one of the two candidates to drop out . Astonishingly, it wasn’t the authoritarian felon who inspired a violent mob to attack the Capitol, tried to overturn a democratic election, has been banned from doing business in New York due to fraud—and yet again showcased his loose grip on reality by ranting about sharks.

UPDATE: Palm Beach Police say Colombians, Haitians detained after beached vessel found

oceans 4 yacht

The Palm Beach Police Department has released the nationalities of the four migrants who came ashore early Sunday via a boat that was found beached along North Ocean Boulevard.

In an update Monday, spokesman Capt. Will Rothrock said two women who were sent the hospital were Colombians. They were given notices to appear in court.

A man and a third woman were Haitians and had been taken to Miami "for expedited removal," he said.

Border Patrol removed the boat on Sunday, he said.

ORIGINAL STORY

The Palm Beach Police Department says four people who came ashore on the island this morning have been detained.

In an alert issued about 7:45 a.m., the department said it wanted to "inform the community of a maritime-based immigration incident that occurred early this morning" near 1200 N. Ocean Blvd.

A beached vessel was reported and "we located and detained four subjects, but there may be several more subjects outstanding," police said.

Police spokesman Capt. Will Rothrock said three females and one male were taken into custody by the department and U.S. Border Patrol. Two of the females were taken to the hospital as a precaution, he said.

The 23-foot boat was "beached some time between midnight and 5 a.m.," Rothrock said, and was found unoccupied about 5:30 a.m.

"Our intelligence unit is working the ongoing investigation with Border Patrol and Homeland Security," Rothrock said.

The department is advising residents to call 561-838-5454 if they observe any suspicious persons or activity.

Wreck of ship on which famed explorer Ernest Shackleton died found on ocean floor off Canada

By Kerry Breen

Updated on: June 12, 2024 / 2:43 PM EDT / CBS News

The wreck of the ship that famed explorer Ernest Shackleton died on more than a century ago has been found on the ocean floor off the coast of Canada, according to a news release from the Royal Canadian Geographical Society .

Shackleton was a legendary explorer who sailed to the edges of the Earth, including four trips to Antarctica . During one notable expedition in 1915, his iconic ship Endurance  became trapped by sea ice . The ship sank, but Shackleton and his entire crew survived the episode. The Endurance shipwreck was finally  found in 2022 .

Seven years later, in 1922, Shackleton would die aboard the Quest, a Norwegian vessel, during another expedition to the polar region. Shackleton's death of a heart attack at 47 ended what historians consider the "Heroic Age of Polar Exploration," the RCGS said.

Ernest Shackleton

After Shackleton's death, the Quest was acquired by a Norwegian company and continued to sail important expeditions, including the 1930 British Arctic Air Route Expedition, the RCGS said. The ship was also used in Arctic rescues and even was part of the Royal Canadian Navy during World War II.

In 1962, while being used as a sealing ship, the Quest was damaged by ice off the coast of Newfoundland and sank. The crew survived, the RCGS said, but the ship landed on the seabed more than 1,200 feet underwater.

The wreck was found just a mile and a half away from the ship's last reported position, but it took sonar equipment and an international team of experts to find the site, the RCGS said. The "Shackleton Quest Expedition" team included participants from Canada, Norway, the United Kingdom and the United States. Search director David Mearns said that he and lead researcher Antoine Normandin cross-referenced historic logs and maps with historical data to determine where currents and weather conditions may have carried the ship.

Just five days into the expedition, the site was found, with historians, divers and oceanographers working together to confirm the wreck's identity.

"In the pantheon of polar ships, Quest is definitely an icon,"  Mearns  told BBC News

On Sunday, the wreck was confirmed to be that of the Quest, the RCGS said.

"Finding  Quest  is one of the final chapters in the extraordinary story of Sir Ernest Shackleton," said expedition leader John Geiger, CEO of the RCGS, in the news release. "Shackleton was known for his courage and brilliance as a leader in crisis. The tragic irony is that his was the only death to take place on any of the ships under his direct command."

The ship remains intact, Mearns said, and sonar imagery "corresponds exactly with the known dimensions and structural features of this special ship."

screen-shot-2024-06-12-at-9-59-38-am.png

The explorers are planning to return to the shipwreck, potentially later this year, to conduct a more complete investigation, the BBC reported.

"Right now, we don't intend to touch the wreck. It actually lies in an already protected area for wildlife, so nobody should be touching it," associate search director Antoine Normandin said. "But we do hope to go back and photograph it with a remotely operated vehicle, to really understand its state."

This year marks the 150th anniversary of Shackleton's birth. His granddaughter, Alexandra Shackleton, was a patron of the expedition and said that finding the shipwreck during such a memorable anniversary has made its discovery all the more meaningful.

"My grandfather, Sir Ernest Shackleton, had purchased  Quest  with the intention of leading a Canadian Arctic expedition," she said. "It is perhaps fitting that the ship should have ended its storied service in Canadian waters. I have long hoped for this day and am grateful to those who made this incredible discovery."

Shackleton continues to spark interest more than a century after his death. The BBC reports that hundreds of people visit his grave on every year to pay their respects to the man known as "The Boss."

$4.5M to advance understanding of ocean carbon, oxygen, heat

  • June 14, 2024

deploying floats from ship

To address gaps in ocean data and modeling efforts and better understand ocean carbon, oxygen and heat, oceanographers at the University of Hawaiʻi Mānoa were awarded $4.5 million from the nonprofit Schmidt Sciences. They are team members on two of five projects selected by Schmidt Sciences and the Schmidt Ocean Institute to join the Ocean Biogeochemistry Virtual Institute ( OBVI ).

The five projects will form the inaugural membership of OBVI , which has committed $45 million over the next five years. The research will address the interlinked questions of how rapidly the ocean is gaining heat and carbon while losing oxygen, and the resilience of marine ecosystems in a rapidly warming world.

deploying video recorder from ship

“This was a competitive search for the best science on the planet and oceanographers at the UH Mānoa School of Ocean and Earth Science and Technology came to play!” said Dave Karl, director of the Center for Microbial Oceanography: Research and Education in SOEST and member of the OBVI advisory board.

SUBSEA project $3.8M

The SUBSEA project will examine how marine organisms in the ocean’s twilight zone—a dim layer roughly 200–500 feet below the ocean’s surface—alter the absorption and circulation of carbon dioxide in ocean gyres (large, circular currents) from the North Pacific to the South Atlantic.

“Oceanographers are having a tough time predicting how life in ocean gyres will respond to climate change, but we know nutrients will play a deciding role,” said Nick Hawco, assistant professor of oceanography and UH Mānoa project lead. “Compared to the gyres in the Southern hemisphere, the North Pacific receives a larger supply of nutrients from the atmosphere. This is an amazing opportunity to compare and contrast how the ocean gyres adjust to changes in nutrient supply that we might see in the future.”

The project team includes UH Mānoa Professor of oceanography Angelicque White, and Benedetto Barone, a UH research oceanographer.

InMOS project $700K

Oceans help mitigate climate change by absorbing heat and carbon, but are experiencing a triple threat from warming, decreasing oxygen, and increasing acidification that may cause harm to marine ecosystems. The second project, InMOS will use artificial intelligence and machine learning to develop estimates of sources and sinks of ocean heat, carbon and oxygen for the past 35 years. Project members aim to both reduce uncertainties in these budgets and understand the physical and biogeochemical processes affecting these interlinked cycles.

Seth Bushinsky, UH Mānoa assistant professor of oceanography and InMOS project team member will lead the effort to develop new marine observational products based on large data sets of ocean carbon, oxygen and nutrient measurements.

For more information, see SOEST ’s website .
