Step-by-step summer sailboat silhouette art tutorials:.

Step one: image showing a hand painting the sun yellow.

How to Paint to the Sun

To begin, prepare the paint palette. Add different shades of yellow, orange, red and blue, as well as white and black.

Using yellow and orange hues, paint the sun like a rainbow by following the arch shape. Start with the lightest shade of yellow and progress to deep orange hues.

Step 2: Image showing a hand painting the second part of the sun orange.

Blend Yellow and Orange Shades

Using the sun as a mixing palette, layer different shades of yellow and orange; continuing to move the paintbrush back and forth across the layers to blend the colors.

Add white to lighten the colors.

Ideally, the darkest shades will be positioned at the bottom of the sun, where the sun meets the sea.

Step 3: Image showing a hand painting the first sun ray at the top of the page a blend of yellow and orange hues.

Paint the First Sun Ray

While the sun focusses on different shades of yellow and orange, the sun rays present an opportunity to explore the full spectrum of warm colors – these are colors that derive from red, yellow and orange.

Step 4: Image showing a hand painting a sun ray a blend of pink and red shades, mixed with a little yellow.

Explore Warm Hues

Paint each ray with a blend of red, yellow and orange, creating light and dark shades of each color.

Start with the lightest shades first, using short paint strokes to create the impression of lines (rays of color) traveling away from the sun.

Progress from light to dark and continue layering the paint strokes – can your Arty Crafty Kids describe the effect this creates?

Image 5: Image showing hands painting the remainder of the sun rays various shades of yellow, pink and red.

Complete the Sun Rays

Continue painting until the rays are bursting with colors!

While this tutorial features sun rays with multiple colors and blends, the rays may also be painted in block colors i.e one shade of red, orange, yellow, orange-red, pink etc. The end result will be just as effective and is a simple adaptation for younger Arty Crafty Kids.

Image 6: Image showing hands painting part of the white space beneath the sunset blue.

How to Paint the Sea

Let’s move onto the cool colors ( colors that derive from shades of green, blue and purple).

Begin by framing the “sea” area with dark shades of blue.

Step 7: Image showing hands painting a yellow and orange reflection into the white space.

How to Paint a Sunset Reflection and Create Perspective

Before progressing with the remainder of the sea, add a few paint strokes of yellow and orange into the white space directly below the sun. To create a sense of the perspective, the lines closest to sun should start wide and become narrower as they move away from the sun.

Adding a reflection to the water is a great way to introduce perspective to young artists.

sailboat art project

Blend and Create Different Shades of Blue

With the beginnings of the reflection painted, fill the surrounding white space with different shades of blue. Add white to lighten the blue.

sailboat art project

The Sea Meets the Sunset

Where the final sun rays meet the sea, paint a layer of red on top of the blue sea and mix to form a shimmer. The mix of blue and red will create gorgeous purple hues.

sailboat art project

Use Simple Dry Brush Strokes to Merge the Reflection and Sea

Add a small amount of blue paint to a dry fine tipped paintbrush and brush it away the body of blue sea into the sun ray. The dry brush will make it difficult for the paint to spread and the strokes will need to be fairly forceful. The benefit of this technique is that it helps to merge the reflection into the sea without too much secondary color mixing – as well know that yellow and blue makes green!

The strokes will also be fairly bold in color, however slightly broken as the paint struggles to spread, allowing the color underneath (white or the sunset shimmer colors) to peak through.

Watch both video tutorials to this technique in action!

sailboat art project

Paint the Sailboat Silhouettes

The sunset seascape painting element is complete! leave the painting to thoroughly dry and move onto the sailboats. Paint the silhouettes black or any color/design of the Arty Crafty Kids choosing.

sailboat art project

Glue the Sailboat Silhouettes to the Seascape Scene

Carefully cut out the painted sailboat silhouettes.

sailboat art project

Next, glue the sailboat onto the seascape scene.

Our second seascape template is open to interpretation – the round, central circle could present as a sun or moon, with the Summer blue sky swapped for a twilight night with a shining moon and twinkly stars.

To see an alternative “sunset’ painting technique to try with your Arty Crafty Kids, take a quick look at this video tutorial. It also demonstrates how to use dry paint strokes to merge the sunset reflections within the sea.

Space and Claude Monet Sailboat Art Lesson

Space and Monet Sailboats Art Lesson

Creating the Illusion of Depth Space & Claude Monet Art Lesson

Third Grade Art class studied the artist Claude Monet. We are also learned about the element of art called space and how to use different perspective techniques to create the illusion of depth. We used Monet’s sailboat paintings as inspiration for our own impressionist style tempera painting.

IO: Identify how artists create depth in an artwork by making objects appear close or far way through a variety of techniques: overlapping, size, color & detail. Students will plan & create a realistic scene using these techniques to create the illusion of depth. Discuss the life and art of the artist Claude Monet. Identify how he used space techniques to create the illusion of depth in his artwork.

  • Define Space -the area above, below, between, within, and around an object. Space is the illusion of depth in a 2D piece of art.
  •  Types of Space: Flat & 3-Dimensional
  •  Ways to Create Depth:
  • OVERLAPPING: Objects placed in the very front appear to be the closest, object placed behind several objects appear to be in the background.  (show example)
  •   SIZE: Larger objects come toward us, smaller objects recede. (show example)
  • COLOR: Lighter colors come forward, darker colors recede. Warm colors come foward, cool colors recede. (show example)
  • DETAIL: Objects in the foreground have much more detail (sharper) than objects in the far background. Backgrounds tend to be slightly out of focus. (show example)

4. Claude Monet was born in Paris, France in 1840. He spent his last ten years painting his water garden. He died at the age of 86 years old.

Interesting Facts about Monet:

  • Because of the invention of  PAINT in TUBES, Monet & other artists were able to more easily go outside & paint (plein aire artists)
  • He was a great artist and helped invent the style of painting called “Impressionism.”
  • He spent most of his time drawing ridiculous pictures of his teachers when he was younger!
  • The mood of his paintings is happy and filled with nature.
  • Monet liked to paint about nature, boats, oceans, lakes, his garden, and ponds.
  • He was more interested in how something looked when the sunlight was on it.

More great info at this  Biography on Claude Monet

Activity: Claude Monet Sailboat Painting

Instructions:

  • Draw at least three sailboats on the paper in 3 different sizes to help show the recession of space. Draw less detail in the farthest sailboats.
  • Outline in Sharpie.
  • Paint with Tempera paints. Start with background.
  • Use short unblended brushstrokes to mimic the impressionistic style. Double load paint brush.

Easy How to Draw a Sailboat Tutorial and Sailboat Coloring Page

Below you’ll find an easy step-by-step tutorial for how to draw a sailboat and a sailboat coloring page. the simplicity allows students extra time to color carefully to make all those colors pop..

sailboat art project

Use the Button below to Download a PDF Tutorial

A step by step tutorial for how to draw an easy sailboat, also available as a free download.

This sailboat drawing started off years ago as a watercolor resist project, as it was so easy for students to draw. They could get the shapes down in no time, trace with a permanent black marker, add crayon texture lines to the water and trees, and then paint away. An example is included below. (Please note, those bright and pretty colors come from using real watercolor paper. It can be a bit pricey, but if you’re working on something for a special occasion, it’s worth it.)

To make things more flexible for non-painters though, I’ve made this version that just uses crayon. The super easy shapes still make it a good match for kinders and up, and the layering of the boat in front of the trees is good practice for young artists. It’s the step that comes after drawing things side by side.

Footprint Sailboat Craft for Kids to Make

Today we made some footprint sailboats! It's a fun craft for kids to make and it's pretty easy to do. Any parent or grandparent would also love to receive this for a keepsake (their feet are only little for so long!)

footprint-sailboat-craft-for-kids

Materials Needed:

  • White cardstock paper
  • Black marker
  • Foot (of course!)

footprint-sailboat-craft-

Start by painting your child's footprint with red paint and stamp it on a piece of white cardstock paper. I like to use cardstock paper because normal construction paper wrinkles when it dries.

sailboat-footprint-craft-for-kids

Draw a line and paint in the sails with blue paint. Use their fingerprints to make a flag at the top and add water/sun in the background to finish it!

Sailboat Monotype Art Lesson

sailboat art project

I have an artist friend, Karyn Walsh, who specializes in monotypes. Our kids used to sail together in Santa Barbara and as we watched their races from shore, Karyn would tell me about her art and the process of creating a monotype. Ultimately, it was the element of surprise and the texture that appealed to her.  After doing this art lesson with my students, I finally understood what she meant.

Karyn describes what a monotype is .

For this project (which I’ve seen other art teachers do), I selected the standard sailboat partly because that’s what Karyn often did and because sailboats are an easily recognized shape, no matter how you draw it!

This is what we did:

sailboat art project

This was a great lesson in many ways. First of all, it was quick. Most kids finished within the 45-minute time frame. You can see that I offered the opportunity to outline the sailboats with black paint. Some kids did, some didn’t. Personal choice. The important part of the project is making sure the kids follow the painting order: ocean, sky and then sailboat. Sometime the reflection “worked” and other times it didn’t. Either way, it was so fun watching the anticipation on the kid’s faces as they unpeeled the folded paper.

I experimented painting the sky and ocean with watercolor paints. The w/c paints dried quickly and the results were great, but to be honest, I wanted to keep the supply list simple. I was feeling seriously lazy that day.

These paintings are BEAUTIFUL!!!

Whauw, great lesson! Love it!

' src=

Going to try this! I love the results!

' src=

Love your ideas-have just finished the waterfront houses and now want to try this

' src=

I am doing this project today w my daughter’s 2nd grade class. It’s her birthday and making art seemed a great way to celebrate!

' src=

We did this lesson, and I loved the results. Unfortunately only got a few pics & I just posted them. http://artwithmrssmith.blogspot.com/2011/04/dont-miss-boat.html I’m so impressed with how far your blog has come in the past 12 months……You’re Awesome!!! Thanks for the inspiration.

' src=

Awesome idea. I will use this for an end of the year project!

' src=

We did this project in my 2nd-3rd grade homeschool co-op art class last week. We did a warm-colored watercolor sky and cool watercolor sea, then painted the boats with tempera. The best part was the gasp of surprise when we opened up the first few prints…the kids were amazed at the “reflection!” Thanks so much for all the great ideas!

' src=

What a great project! I’ve never done it this way before! I love it and will try it!

' src=

Tried this in a first grade classroom. I used trapezoid and right triangle templates to help the students with their boats. The kids loved seeing the “reflection” of their boats in the water. Turned out great!

' src=

This is a must try lesson! I am going to follow your plan for an opening lesson this fall. I am so excited to see their reaction about the monoprint part.

' src=

I love this web site. I use many of your projects and coordinate them with writing activities. Our displays in the hallway are always awesome because of the art work. I am using this idea for our end of the year writing. We are going to call it Sailing Into Summer; Reflections on Third Grade. This web site is great for my kids too because I pull it up on my Smart Board so the kids can see “how to” and what the finished product will look like. Thanks for all of your great ideas!!!!

' src=

I SO want a smart board!!!

' src=

Cant wait to try this with a sunset! Can’t tell you how grateful I am for your site! I have always thought about art as having to look perfect and real and as I get older and actually better… I love letting go and can’t wait to teach my children to feel this beauty and freedom. And they will learn to draw and paint perfection all the while. I want it to be about the experience. You are amazing!

  • craft paper scraps in rainbow colors
  • cotton balls

First, paint some ocean waves on the bottom half of the light blue craft paper. You can use a regular paintbrush, or experiment with one or more comb-type tools, such as plastic forks, plastic hair combs, or homemade cardboard combs.

Rainbow sailboat art project with painted ocean

Squirt some blue, green, and white paint onto the paper. Then, drag the tools through the paint in wavy or straight lines to create wave-like texture. Continue adding more paint, as needed, to create the ocean waves.

Ocean painting with combs

While the painted background is drying, draw and cut out some simple shapes to make a sailboat. Depending on the age and abilities of your kiddos, you can cut shapes out ahead of time, or you can draw shapes on paper for your kiddos to cut out. Older kids can draw and cut out the shapes themselves. Sometimes, drawing a few sailboat ideas with simple shapes can be helpful.

Rainbow sailboat art with simple shapes

Cut at least one shape from each of the rainbow-colored paper scraps. We added a few sail decorations using some of our colored paper. Once you have all your shapes cut out, glue them to the painted background paper using a glue stick.

For a final touch, pull apart a few cotton balls to create wispy clouds. Then, use a glue stick to stick them in the sky around the sailboat.

Rainbow sailboat art project for kids

I love the bright colors and interesting textures on our rainbow sailboat collage art. My little guy especially loved painting with the comb, so I’m sure we will be revisiting that kind of painting many more times!

Also, these apple slice sailboat snacks  are genius, and will be making an appearance at one of our snack-times very soon!

Happy crafting!

Preschool Boat Crafts

These preschool boat crafts are perfect for introducing young learners to both transportation and the letter “Bb”.

These hands-on activities not only unlock your child’s inner artist, but they serve as an engaging way to teach them about different modes of transportation and the alphabet.

So, prepare to set sail into a world of creativity, learning, and fun! Let’s dive right in and explore these exciting boat crafts.

These hands-on activities are an excellent way to familiarize your little ones with the transportation world and the alphabet’s letter “Bb”.

It’s more than just crafting; it’s a path to discovery, learning, and development. So, let’s set our compass and navigate through these fabulous boat crafting ideas!

How do these activities tie into the letter of the week?

As part of your “Letter of the Week” series, these boat crafts provide a fun and interactive way to familiarize children with the letter “Bb”.

When children make these crafts, the connection between boats and the letter “Bb” is an easy association for young minds to grasp.

Every time they see or think about a boat, they’ll be reminded of the letter “Bb”. This association can act as a powerful memory aid, helping children to recall and recognize the letter faster.

In turn, this promotes early literacy skills and paves the way for successful learning in the future.

Now that we've discussed how these boat crafts link the worlds of transportation, craft, and literacy, let's get into the exciting part — the crafts themselves!

Each of these projects is not only fun to create but is also skillfully designed to emphasize the core theme we're exploring: the letter "Bb".

Remember, the key objective is to make learning enjoyable and intuitive for our little ones. So, buckle up and get ready for some fun-filled crafting time ahead.

Sailboat Paintings

Home / Lesson Plans / Sailboat Paintings

Project Objective

Students will learn how to incorporate patterns into their artwork and utilize shapes and colors.

Required Materials

  • PDF Download

Sailboat Art

  • Demonstrate how to draw the boat by drawing an upside down trapezoid for the bottom of the boat, and a smaller, right side up trapezoid for the cabin of the boat.
  • Draw a vertical line above the cabin for the mast of the boat. On each side of the line draw a triangle for the sails. They are more interesting if they are not the same size. Students can add stripes on the sails and on the boat. They can also add windows and doors to the cabin.
  • Behind the boat, which should be located near the center of the paper, show students how to draw a horizon line. Near the bottom of their paper, they can draw another line for the beach.
  • On each side of their paper, students can draw palm trees or tropical plants. To draw a palm tree, draw a very skinny tall trunk. At the top of each trunk, draw five or six lines coming out like spokes on a wheel. On each side of the line draw a curved or zigzag line for the edges of the palm leaves.
  • Optional – drawn an outline in black marker for emphasis
  • Next, students will be either coloring their art with crayons or markers, or painting with tempera paint cakes or watercolors. Paintings will be more successful if students paint the boat, sand and trees one day, and the water and sky on another day. Remind students to use contrasting colors. Avoid making the boat a color that matches the water or sky too closely.
  • Print name legibly on the front of the paper (at least an inch from the edge so the name will not be cut off).

Monet's Boats Watercolor Art Lesson for Kids

Watercolor and pastel boats

An art lesson for kids with mixed media!

Background info:.

Growing up outside the port of Le Havre, France, Monet was familiar with boats. His father earned his living servicing larger ships at his small shop. Monet never owned his own boat until the age of thirty-three, but as  a youth he had painted them in all shapes and sizes.

Fishing Boats, Calm Sea by Monet

Monet took great care in painting various types of boats, especially sail boats. His fascination with the sails and how they reflected on the water can be seen in a variety of his works. The town of Argenteuil was a popular destination for spectators to watch boats race down the Seine River. Monet painted over 170 pieces while living in Argenteuil including many of the Seine River.

  • Faber-Castell Watercolor Paper Pad
  • Faber-Castell Construction Paper Pad
  • Faber-Castell Connector Paints
  • Faber-Castell Oil Pastels
  • Faber-Castel Water Cup

Connector paint with blue watercolor on paper

Paint the sky on the top half of a piece of watercolor paper. Start in the middle of the paper and work upwards. Use a lighter shade of blue paint and make your brushstrokes go from side to side.

Connector Paint with blue shades of watercolor

Paint the water on the bottom half of the paper. Start at the horizon line where the sky meets the water and work downwards, painting side to side. Use greens and darker blues to create a contrast. Let dry.

Creating the Boats

Construction paper, oil pastels, scissors, and glue

  • Faber-Castell Construction Paper in dark colors

Construction paper boats

Create boats out of construction paper. Draw triangular shapes for the sails, a skinny piece for the mast, and a banana shape for the hull. I like to curve the edges of the sails to look like their billowing in the wind. You can suggest more basic shapes for younger artists. Cut out the pieces.

Construction paper boat with oil pastels

Shade in the sails using various colors of oil pastels.

Construction paper boats and watercolor background

Glue down the boat pieces on the water portion of the paper.

Construction paper boats and oil pastels

Use oil pastels to make additional lines on the water representing ripples. This creates texture.

Trim your sponges with scissors. Green was trimmed in thirds Pink & Yellow cut in half Purple cut in half lengthwise (see notes)

For the Green sponges, I cut the skewer with the wire cutter to about 5.5″ in length. For all other sponges, I used the full size, 8″ skewer.

proces2

Create sails buy cutting triangles out of construction paper. If desired, Fold a small piece of construction paper in half and cut a triangle out on the fold. Glue the fold together on the top of the skewer.

proces3

Poke the skewer into the sponge so that it goes through the other side at least 1″. Remove the skewer. Poke a hole at the top of the construction paper triangle, along the long edge, and poke the skewer through the paper. Keep the skewer about 1/2″ to 3/8″ from the edge of the paper. Your sail does not have to be taunt on the skewer, it can bend.

Push the skewer with the sail through the hole in your sponge. Adjust the sail as necessary and sail away.

proces4

To sail. Place the boat into the water and let the sponge absorb water before letting go. You’ll need to adjust the skewer up and down through the sponge and adjust the sail for optimal sailing.

Sailboat craft for little ones

Note: They all tipped over at some point. And the sails got wet. But they still worked fine. It works best if the skewer pokes through the bottom of the sponge about 1-2″. Clearly you can experiment with this! The purple boat was the worst. Two masts and it never did officially stand up! It kept toppling over. You may want to omit, unless you have a determined child in the group.

The Good Side: Juneteenth Mural Project

WASHINGTON (Gray DC) - Juneteenth celebrates the end of slavery. It marks June 19th, 1865, the day thousands of enslaved people in Texas first learned they were free, more than 2 years after the signing of the Emancipation Proclamation.

The Absolute Equality Juneteenth Mural Project uses public art to educate communities about U.S. history and spark conversations of racial equity and social justice. They’ve already painted more than a dozen murals across the country. “The Good Side” looked at their latest project, located in Washington, D.C.
