Mexico Yacht Charters – Sea of Cortez

Loreto | isla coronado | isla carmen | isla san josé isla san francisco | isla espíritu santo | la paz | cabo san lucas, the sea of cortez (gulf of california) – mexico.

Jacques Cousteau called the Sea of Cortez the “aquarium of the world.”  The narrow strip of water between Mexico’s Baja peninsula and the mainland, the Sea of Cortez remains largely a secret waiting to be discovered.

Cousteau’s moniker is accurate: here you can dive with massive, gentle whale sharks or play tag with spirited sea lion pups.

The wildlife below and above the water is just part of the draw. The scenery is breathtaking: desert mountains towering over clear-ascan- be turquoise seas. It’s the perfect backdrop for watersports, hiking, beach barbecues or simply dining al fresco and marveling at the starry sky in a land free from light pollution.

Travels along mexico’s sea of cortez.

Best of all, you will see few tourists and even fewer boats – superyachts do come here, but it’s nothing compared to the busy winter cruising destinations.

When you’re done with the seclusion, head for the southernmost tip of the Baja Peninsula, where you will find the celebrity haunts of Cabo San Lucas and San José del Cabo, both of which boast high-end hotels, shopping, excellent restaurants – a Nobu opened recently – and tequila-fueled nightlife.

A huge private airport makes it easy for visitors to jet in and out of Cabo and explore the stunning Sea of Cortez beyond. Cabo is also an ideal place to ring in the New Year, with exciting festivities and a series of dazzling fireworks exploding off the coast – best seen by boat, of course.

Fly into Loreto International Airport and meet your yacht at Marina Puerto Escondido. You can either head to the mountains to tour the restored San Javier Mission church (one of the best preserved in Baja) or just settle in on board and get to know the crew while sipping a cocktail.

Isla Coronado

In the early morning, head to Isla Coronado, which has a hidden white sand beach. Grab your snorkel to get your first taste of the incredible marine life that the Sea of Cortez offers. Spot sea lions, dolphins and scores of species of fish, or enjoy a peaceful paddleboarding session.

Isla Carmen

Make the short cruise (less than eight nautical miles) to Isla Carmen, the largest island in Loreto Bay National Marine Park. Spend the day circumnavigating the island while also making use of the yacht’s toy box – exploring by jet ski, sailing dinghy or on board the yacht’s tender. Back on board, recline on the sundeck’s ample sunpads to watch a film under the stars.

Isla San José and Isla San Francisco

While you sleep, the yacht will move down the coastline to Isla San José, home to abandoned salt flats and forests of giant cacti to wander through on foot, and mangroves to explore by tender. After your adventures, your yacht will head south to the smaller Isla San Francisco, where there is the perfect anchorage for deploying the water slide in the clear waters.

Isla Espíritu Santo and Isla Partida

Your yacht will head further south to the uninhabited Isla Espíritu Santo and Isla Partida. Declared a Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO, the islands are home to sharks, rays, turtles, dolphins and a large colony of sea lions. Snorkel with the adorable sea lion pups, who will play with you in the water, or take the tender to Ensenada Grande, considered to be one of the world’s most beautiful beaches.

After a few days in the wilderness, pay a visit to the city of La Paz, with its vibrant art scene and intriguing international history. Stroll along its Malecón waterfront, which is packed with sculptures created by local artists, or visit the Plaza Constitución, with its 19th-century Our Lady of Peace Cathedral Basilica set in the shady Velasco Garden.

Cabo Pulmo National Park

Wake up in the Cabo PuImo National Park, a dream diving destination that’s home to sea turtles and rays. Spend your final day in the water, where you’ll discover why Jacques Cousteau nicknamed this stretch of coastline “the world’s aquarium.”

The next morning your yacht will head to the party beaches of Cabo San Lucas. Disembark and fly out from its international airport or enjoy a few days at the new Nobu Hotel Los Cabos and book a table for dinner at the renowned Nobu restaurant.

Luxury Yacht Rental in Sea of Cortez

Luxury yacht charter guide to sea of cortez.

Jacques Cousteau and John Steinbeck both fell hard for the sublime waters of the Sea of Cortez and for good reason. These marine rich waters brim with secret anchorages, strange creatures of the deep, and blissful islands that can go years without seeing a yacht charter passing through. Getting off the beaten track can be tricky in this oversaturated tourist world, but the Sea of Cortez still manages to keep its surreal authenticity. These are lands of wild coastlines, hidden snorkeling gems, salt cracked desert landscapes and deep blue biodiversity.

Cabo San Lucas, Los Arcos. Mexican riviera, Mexico

Reasons to Charter a Yacht in the Sea of Cortez

The worlds aquarium.

Celebrated as the aquarium of the world, a yacht charter in the Sea of Cortez is full of exciting animal encounters. Not only will you get to witness dolphins frolicking in the surf but those who dive deep into the blue can get up close and personal with over 900 species of fish. Beyond the blue, there are water birds, marine plants, sea lions and even migrating humpbacks.

Pure Authenticity

Other than the glitzy shores of Cabo San Lucas, tourism hasn’t hit the Sea of Cortez hard – if at all. Those yacht charter guests looking to see a side of traditional Mexico will find that the towns that scatter these shores are as authentic as can be. Sleepy fishing villages, remote anchorages and a feeling of being a modern-day explorer keeps the Sea of Cortez high on an intrepid yachters bucket list.

UNESCO Bliss

Awarded UNESCO status for being a spot of outstanding beauty, you cannot tear your eyes away from the dramatic cliffs, turquoise hues, and desert dreams that make up the Sea of Cortez and its islands. The landscapes you can see on a yacht charter around the Sea of Cortez hold echoes of another world with their shimmering deserts, salt flats, and deep volcanic craters.

Remote Shores

While the waters around the Sea of Cortez teem with life, the desert shores provide a staggeringly stark contrast. The effect is almost poetic – sizzling temperatures, the occasional slither of a snake, darting lizards and giant cacti with prickly branches. Further in and the salt flats gleam and glow like a mirage of silica sand – flanked by shadowy mountains like mirages way off in the distance. There’s no doubt, the Sea of Cortez and surrounds have an ethereal feel.

Where to Visit in the Sea of Cortez

Cabo san lucas.

While most of the Sea of Cortez brims with wild and remote islands, Cabo San Lucas is where you will find the tourist hordes. They come for the floury white sands, the arched cliffs, and the wild nights that follow fun days filled with dolphin trips, snorkeling and horse back riding on these soft sands. From nature watching at El Arco to dancing all night under the influence of tequila at El Squid Roe, Cabo San Lucas is a must stop spot for yacht charters.

Isla Partida

Less than an hour from the shores of La Paz, the Isla Partida and Espiritu Santo welcome yacht charters in the Sea of Cortez into a rainbow world. The colors of Isla Partida are caused by minerals that have been shaken to the surface by tremors and earthquakes. The result is rosy pinks, deep reds, earthy browns and warm creams that stand out like precious gems against the opal hues of the sea. This is a place to swim with sea lions, visit pretty pearl farms, and generally gaze at the layers of volcanic history from the deck of your luxury yacht.

A slice of city life awaits you in La Paz, a city that has sprawled since the 19th century when its pearl diving industry took off. Drop anchor and head into the Old Town to explore the main square, the colorful architecture, and the chic sidewalk cafes. Visit the Whale Museum and snap pictures of the Dominican cathedral before hitting the Mercado to see Mexico dressed in all her best regional colors. Those who can’t bear to be torn away from the Sea of Cortez can head a little north to Balandra Beach where kayaking and tender tours of the mangroves takes you back to nature.

Los Islotes

Yacht charter guests who want to see sea lions in the Sea of Cortez should be sure to set sail for Los Islotes. This smidge of an island is home to a 200 strong colony of honking creatures and is one of the best places in the whole world for watching the sea lions frolic and even swimming alongside them. The rocky shores are best discovered and circled by boat, allowing you to glimpse the playful mammals splashing and swimming through shoals as fish as pelicans dive from above.

When to Charter a Yacht in the Sea of Cortez

The Sea of Cortez can be a year-round destination for yacht charters thanks to its warm weather and impressive array of wildlife. Spring is the best time of year for those who want to witness large pods of dolphins and whales passing through and who also want to witness the plethora of nesting birds that screech and soar overhead.

MEXICO and the SEA of CORTEZ YACHT CHARTERS

IDEAL TIME TO CHARTER: December – April

Mexico’s Sea of Cortez, also known as the Gulf of California, paints a more authentic picture of Mexico than visiting by cruise ship. Take a private yacht charter vacation to this vast sea which divides the Baja Peninsula from the mainland, and enjoy spectacular scenery and fewer crowds. Get a flavor of the true Mexico when you visit the region’s towns. With the exception of Cabo San Lucas, a popular tourist location, there are quaint ports and many remote islands with amazing biodiversity. The marine life in the Sea of Cortez is outstanding, with common seasonal sightings of migratory blue whales (largest of species coming from the Artic and Alaska), California sea lions, frigate birds, blue-footed boobies and dolphins. Kayaking, snorkeling and diving here offer a wonderful way to view the pristine landscapes and diverse wildlife.

SUGGESTED ITINERARY

For best results, tell us your desired travel dates and itinerary ideas and let our complimentary planning service do the rest.

Sea of Cortez La Paz Mexico

La Paz to Puerto Balandra – Arrive La Paz, depart marina and anchor at Puerto Balandra (8 miles, 1.5hrs) passing Roca Lobos to see sea lions. This is an isolated, unpopulated coastal area with eight beaches, an interior salt lagoon and a rock formation called “El Hongo” (the mushroom) which has become the symbol of La Paz. This area is surrounded by low reddish mountains that contain the occasional desert tree and huge cardón cactus. The red color of the mountains contrasts with the white sands of the beaches facing the Gulf with its turquoise, blue and green waters. These waters are filled with thousands of multi-colored small fish, coral and larger fish such as tuna, striped mullet, “sierra”, barracuda, dogfish and green sharks. There are also starfish and stingrays here.

Just back from the sea itself is a salt lagoon created by sea waters that occasionally come inland. It is shallow enough to walk across and surrounded by mature mangroves. The water is generally very warm, about 84F/30C average, and because of this and its shallowness, the water evaporates rapidly, making it saltier than the ocean water. While there are small beach restaurants (palapas) and places to rent equipment for aquatic sports it has not been built up by the community that lives in the La Paz area in order to preserve its natural state.

La Paz Bay to Isla Espiritu Santo – Head across La Paz bay to swim with whale sharks. After lunch sail back to Isla Espiritu Santo and anchor in Puerto Ballena. *Explore the bay by tender.

DAY 2 (ALTERNATIVE)

Bahia San Gabriel – Visit San Gabriel (7 miles, 1 hr). to  dive the wreck of the Salvaterra (sunken ferry at 60 feet deep) or snorkel Rocas Suwanee in San Lorenzo Channel. In the afternoon, hike or walk (easy well marked trail, approx 2 miles one way) over island to Playa Bonanza or move to Puerto Ballena (4 miles 0.5 hr).

Puerto Ballena to Galeta Partida – Diving or hiking day.  In Puerto Ballena, snorkel at Isla Gallo and/or Isla Gallina or dive either Fang Ming wreck (70 feet deep, mast at 177 below surface) or Lapas No3 wreck (60 feet deep, mast at 27 feet below surface), wrecks were purposely sunk to form  reefs.   Optional: take a short hike around the bay.  In the afternoon, sail to Caleta Partida (6 miles, 1hr), beach, paddle boarding (Caleta Partida is perfect to learn to paddle board as it is very sheltered flat water and shallow), snorkeling, short hiking trail to head of bay, cross over beach and paddle boarding to sea caves on east coast.  Fun activity: remote controlled sail boat regatta.

Beach, dive or hike – After breakfast morning sail out into La Paz bay. Anchor Ensenada Grande on Isla Partida for lunch. Travel Magazine voted this the most beautiful beach in Mexico and one of the top 12 beaches in the world. Beach, hike up hills overlooking the bay, swim, snorkel, tender ride round to next bay (Las Cuevitas) to see blue footed booby colony, dive at Rocas Tintorera.

Los Islotes – Snorkel and swim among friendly and curious sea lions. With its rugged cliffs and coves carved deeply into the coastline it is a good place to go beachcombing or take a hike along the rocky coast, keeping your eye out for brown pelicans, gulls, wandering great blue herons, and boobies. Depending on weather conditions, you may sail down the east coast (lunch underway) and anchor at Playa la Bonanza (12 miles, 1.5 – 2hrs).  enjoy an afternoon stroll on the beach (nearly 2 miles long crescent shaped white sandy beach), or return down the west coast and revisit any of the previous anchorages you’d like to enjoy again.

Playa Bonanza or Puerto Ballandra – If at Playa Bonanza, spend the morning at anchor to enjoy water sports.  Divers, hike across the island to Bahia San Gabriel (easy well marked path, 2 miles each way) to dive the wreck of the Salvaterra in San Lorenzo channel.  If on the west coast, morning at anchor enjoying water sports, afternoon sail to Puerto Ballandra (10 miles, 1.5hrs) or return to marina for evening, ready for a night on the dock or a meal ashore in La Paz.

La Paz – After breakfast return to marina (8 miles, 1.5hrs) and go ashore to experience La Paz.

Caleta Partida is a bay located at the point where the two islands meet and separate.

The crystal-clear water of the bay is home to a great variety of marine life, including colorful tropical fish, manta rays, whale sharks, and sea turtles.

This idyllic cove is a haven for outdoor enthusiasts, offering endless opportunities for activities such as hiking, snorkeling, fishing, and sunbathing. During the winter’s northerly winds, the main bay provides excellent wind and wave protection, making it a safe spot for boats and yachts.

The bay is large enough to accommodate a significant number of boats, including small cruise ships that occasionally tour the Sea of Cortez.

In summary, Isla San Francisco is a true paradise, offering stunning natural beauty, diverse recreational opportunities, and excellent amenities for boaters and travelers. Don’t miss your chance to experience this hidden gem in the southern Sea of Cortez!

San José / Amortajada

Amortajada

It’s a great opportunity to experience the rugged natural beauty of San Jose Island and witness the power of nature.

Sail La Paz, Mexico

  • Location Guide

Bienvenida! Welcome to Mexico and a holiday in the natural wonderland of the Gulf of California, also known as the Sea of Cortez. If your passion is sailing and your idea of the perfect vacation setting is white sandy beach under bright blue sky where sparkling waters support an abundance of wildlife, then a bareboat charter out of La Paz is for you.

The malecon at La Paz

La Paz is an attractive city in southern Baja California, easily accessible with three flights from Mexico City daily. Alternatively it's a two hour bus trip from the popular resort city of Cabo San Lucas. In La Paz, your charter boat awaits at the exclusive Costa Baja resort.

La Paz is Spanish for 'peace'. What word could be more appropriate to describe a sailing holiday in the waters of the Sea of Cortez, Baja California Sur.

The popular sailing cruise out of La Paz goes north, with the first point of call an anchorage on Isla Espiritu Santo, designated a national marine park. Bahia San Gabriel is just a short sail or motor from the marina; its long sweep of beach is simply stunning and nature lovers will be rewarded for going ashore. Before the afternoon is too far advanced, sail on to Caleta Partida at the northern end of the island, a picturesque anchorage where you can get a good first night's rest, well tucked up if the Corumel decides to blow.

Isla Partida is another Gulf of Cortez gem, with Ensenada Beach offering shelter and access. The water around here teems with marine life, so snorkelling is a favoured pastime, while many visitors take time to observe the sea lions in their Los Islotes colony before venturing further north.

Top places to visit on a La Paz bareboat holiday

Sailing out of La Paz does require some reasonably long sailing days, and from Caleta Pardida it is 24 nm to Isla San Jose. Bahia Amortajada is highly recommended, where an expedition ashore takes you through a wildlife-rich lagoon and mangroves to higher ground that's dotted with giant cacti. Your plans for the night will determine how long you stay in this magical place, and you may wish to press on to the quiet fishing village of San Evaristo on the mainland. If it's hard getting away from San Jose, call back on the return journey.

From San Evaristo, your course depends on the length of your charter. On a seven-day itinerary, this is about the extent of your voyage north. If you've spent your second night in San Evaristo, there's still San Francisquito to explore, San Jose and Espirito Santo to revisit, and a bit more of the mainland to see.

The small island of San Francisquito has some beautiful white sand beaches and protected anchorages. It's a popular place so in season you are likely to have company in the bay. With a four to five hour sail/motor back to Espirito Santo, a scheduling decision needs to be made. Stay another day to enjoy this area and you still have time to stop over back at Espirito Santo on your return to La Paz via Puerto Balandra. Stay longer, and it's a 33 nautical mile passage to Puerto Balandra and its turquoise waters. This large cove on the mainland, with what some say is "the best beach in Mexico", is ideal for your last night aboard, just a short sail back to La Paz.

See more on a 14-day Gulf of California charter

Should you book a 14-day charter out of La Paz, a whole new sector of Baja California cruising awaits. Remote fishing villages dot the coast, with places such as Puerto Gato and Bahia Agua Verde great to visit and generally acceptable as overnight anchorages. When you get to Puerto Escondito, you are in one of Baja California's most sheltered bays. Take a 15 minute taxi trip to nearby Loreto to replenish supplies, and if you wish take some resort time out. Loreto has some history too. The Jesuits came here in 1697, forming the first settlement in the entire west coast mission system.

Offshore this part of the coast is the ecologically-important Loreto Marine Park, including Isla del Carmen and Isla Danzante. There's time to enjoy these island's many coves and beaches and the marine life attracted to their waters. See a little more of the mainland too, by stopping overnight at Nopolo, before setting a southerly course back to La Paz, for which you'll want to allow at least five nights.

Sea of Cortez

Other destination.

sailboat charter sea of cortez

Serene, wild and otherworldly are all apt descriptions for the dazzling display of nature that is found in the Sea of Cortez, otherwise known as the Gulf of California. If you’re a lover of nature, wildlife and off-the-grid adventure, sailing the Sea of Cortez may be just the paradise you’ve been dreaming about.

Located to the west of mainland Mexico, along the Baja Peninsula, the Sea of Cortez is a wonderland of contrasts. Electric blue waters sparkle against rugged red bluffs, dolphins and manta rays leap majestically against a backdrop of desert sands and the spectacular views while hiking are just as striking as the underwater playground found when snorkeling.

In this destination, tourist traps and crowds are far from sight, replaced by secluded beaches, stunning vistas and a stunning diverse marine ecosystem that’s guaranteed to deliver an up-close-and-personal wildlife experience. The deep, clear waters are home to countless species of whales and dolphins, as well as colonies of playful sea lions and marine turtles. Jacque Cousteau even famously referred to the Sea of Cortez as “the world’s aquarium”.

Upon sailing away from the Baja Peninsula mainland, you’ll experience an energizing “digital detox” like no other. Leave the internet and email behind in exchange for nature’s perfectly simple pleasures — lively sea breezes, fresh-caught fish on the grill, smiles from friendly locals and unrivaled nightly star-gazing.

Read on to learn everything you need to know about sailing the Sea of Cortez.

Bountiful Marine Wildlife

If wildlife encounters are at the top of your list, the Sea of Cortez islands will definitely not disappoint. Snorkelers are likely to come across moray eels, turtles, manta rays and a wide variety of tropical fish. Large pods of long-nosed dolphins — sometimes numbering in the hundreds — can often be spotted diving, leaping and even surfing in the wake of your boat.

A much-sought-after encounter in the Sea of Cortez is the opportunity to swim alongside a colony of sea lions. Sea lions are curious, friendly and adorable and you’ll love swimming with them. A large colony is found on Los Islotes, with professional tours leaving from the town of La Paz. Summer is a great time to visit, when the water is warm and more tranquil, but the largest populations of sea lions and playful pups are found in the spring. Don’t forget an underwater camera for full Instagram bragging rights!

Whale sharks are another favorite with visitors. These plankton-eating gentle giants are the largest fish in the world, reaching lengths of 40ft or more. Whale sharks are known to come to the Bay of La Paz between October and February each year. Swimming with whale sharks is regulated to protect the animals, so a licensed tour operator is required for swimming with these magnificent creatures.

Culinary Delights of the Baja Peninsula

While dining opportunities may not be the first thing that comes to mind when thinking of sailing the Sea of Cortez, the Baja Peninsula offers foodies a delightfully simple, fresh and wholesome menu with a staggering array of fresh-caught seafood, including tuna, octopus, clams and lobster. An arid, tropical climate adds to the unique taste and variety of fresh fruits and vegetables, such as avocado, mango and guava.

The small town of La Paz offers a surprising selection of restaurants with international cuisine, thanks to the diverse population of expats who’ve settled here throughout the years. But of course you can’t go wrong with the traditional Mexican fare found here. Shrimp tacos, fresh-made guacamole and margaritas are all on the must-try list while in La Paz, and excellent cantinas are plentiful.

While sailing the Sea of Cortez, the fishermen among you will want to fish from your boat for the very freshest seafood possible. Grill aboard your boat and enjoy unmatched dining under the stars paired with a frosty cerveza.

The Sea of Cortez Islands – Top Anchorages

sailboat charter sea of cortez

La Paz – Cruising the Sea of Cortez begins in this vibrant capital city of Baja California Sur. The beautiful CostaBaja Resort Marina is found here and is the perfect location to begin your sailing adventure. The heart of scenic La Paz is the malecón, or seaside boardwalk, which extends for miles along the waterfront, dotted with charming sculptures, palms and street vendors.

Isla San Francisco – This postcard-perfect anchorage is a cruiser favorite, with its long stretch of horseshoe-shaped beach, amazingly clear water and jaw-dropping views of the Baja mountain range.  Hikers can trek the ridge trail that snakes along the hills at one end of the bay to reach the top for stunning views of bright blue-green sea on both sides of the ridge.

Santo Bahia San Gabriel , Isla Espirtu Santo

This large picturesque bay offers great kayaking, snorkeling, hiking and white sand beaches surrounded by rugged, cactus-studded, red volcanic cliffs. Follow the trail across the island to the eastern shore to find Playa Bonanza, one of the most beautiful beaches on the island.

Thoughtfully plan your provisions   – La Paz is the place to provision. The town has everything from quaint open-air markets to large supermarkets. Be sure to buy everything you’ll need for your charter before you depart the marina. Most importantly, stock up with lots of bottled water! Once out on the gulf, there are few stores or restaurants to be found, aside from local fisherman who may occasionally stop by peddling their catch of the day.

Packing for your charter – As with all yacht charters, careful packing can greatly enhance your trip. Be sure to bring along bug spray, a wide-brimmed hat and sunscreen for sun protection. Sturdy footwear is recommended for hiking the many spectacular desert trails of the Sea of Cortez islands.

Prepare to unplug – WiFi and internet access are available in and around La Paz, but after leaving the marina there is generally no service available. But sailing, swimming and stargazing more than make up for the loss.

Appreciate the friendly locals – Take some time to interact with the local people — and other yacht charterers — that you encounter along your journey. Part of the charm of visiting faraway places is connecting with people with lifestyles very different from our own. Buy what they’re selling, offer them a beer, and help each other out for a more enriching and rewarding experience.

However, learning to sail isn’t as difficult as it might seem. And contrary to what some may believe, “sailing is for everyone,” Zeke Quezada, the Director of Communications at the American Sailing Association (ASA) tells Condé Nast Traveler.

“It is important to understand that anyone can sail, and it is really easy to learn,” Quezada says. “Sailing is not just for the affluent; head into a community sailing club at your local marina, and you'll have options to get out on the water for little to no cost.”

While mastering the art of sailing takes consistent practice, hopeful captains looking for a crash-course to jumpstart their journey may consider a sailing vacation . These educational charters allow you to fully immerse yourself in the nautical lifestyle —and you can earn official certifications along the way. On these types of trips, “you have a qualified skipper on board who is offering instruction, as well as advice on how to become a safe and confident sailor,” Quezada explains. “The best part is that you can have your family onboard, and everyone is having a vacation while you check off the bucket list item of learning to sail.”

When planning your first sailing trip , look for trips and schools that offer credentialed schools and instructors; organizations such as ASA, US Sailing, and the Royal Yacht Association are internationally recognized. By following these certification tracks, you can become licensed to sail a charter without a captain on board, also known as a “bareboat charter.” Though not required in some places, a bareboat certification makes it much easier (and safer) to rent your own boat .

No matter which route you take, sailing is a lifelong skill that will open doors to a community of people passionate about getting out on the water and protecting the oceans. “Most importantly, you will learn how to sit back, turn off the phone, and feel the wind in your hair and the sun on your face,” says Quezada. “You might start listening to Jimmy Buffet as well.”

Below, we’ve rounded up the best places around the world for learning how to sail—including destinations in North America , Europe , Asia , and Australia —plus, the sailing courses and trips to book in 2024.
