This $8 Billion Turtle-Shaped Yacht Is Not a Joke

By Katherine McLaughlin

Rendering of a turtleshaped yacht

Among many things that weren’t on our Bingo cards for 2022, a giant turtle-shaped yacht—which is also being described as a floating city —is certainly at the top of the list. And yet, here we are. As CNN reported, an Italian design firm, Lazzarini Design Studio , has drafted plans for a massive boat shaped like an oversized tortoise with outstretched flippers. The vessel is so big that it’s not even being called a superyacht , but rather designers have described it as a terayacht. As such, it was given an appropriately big name, Pangeos , a nod to Pangea, the ancient supercontinent that once incorporated almost all of Earth’s landmasses. According to Lazzarini, the ship will be big enough to hold various hotels, apartments, condos, shopping centers, parks, and other amenities for up to 60,000 guests. The yacht will even have ship and aircraft ports so guests can visit when Pangeos isn’t docked near land. Which is helpful since, as of now, the company doesn’t foresee any strict itinerary, but rather expects the turtle to simply coast around the world.

Many of the amenities and homes are designed around a central town square.

Extending 1,800 feet in length and measuring 2,000 feet at its widest point, the boat is poised to be the largest floating structure ever built. That is, of course, if it does get built, which is a whole other obstacle in and of itself. As the Pangeos website explains, “the terayacht needs a terashipyard,” which doesn’t currently exist. The project requires a yard that is about 200 miles wide and 180 miles long, which also means dredging about 0.4 square miles of the sea with a circular dam. Once the yacht is constructed, the dam can open, flooding the area and essentially launching the vessel. Lazzarini has currently suggested the coast of Saudi Arabia as the ideal location for construction.

Since the goal is usually to minimize drag, boats don’t usually stray from the standard V shape—and are even less frequently formed like marine animals—but Pangeos ’s flippers are more than just a peculiarity. According to the company, the extremities will capture kinetic energy from the waves, which will allow the boat to cruise perpetually without emissions. The rooftop area would also be equipped with solar panels for additional power, should it be necessary; electric engines are also included in the design.

Rendering of a terraced villa around a central square

Within the terraced villa, guests can find houses, buildings, and rooftop terraces, with an upper zone that offers landing of various flying vehicles.

According to the firm, the total cost to build the massive vessel will be nothing short of $8 billion. Construction will also take, at minimum, eight years, and Lazzarini doesn’t expect that this could even begin until 2025. With a hefty price tag and decent wait time, the company has conjured a plan to alleviate both. Designed as an NFT crowdfunding project, the firm is selling “Unreal Estate,” allowing interested buyers to purchase virtual boarding tickets, hotel rooms, and even houses for a metaverse version of the yacht, which the company says will be ready for (virtual) boarding by 2023.

The steel hull comprises 30,000 individual “cells” that would help keep Pangeos afloat. The tera-turtle can sail around the world nonstop sans emissions on account of a virtually endless supply of green energy. The vessel is covered in solar panels that generate clean power from the sun for the hotel load and propulsion system. Powered by nine electric motors of 16,800 hp each, Pangeos could cruise at a maximum speed of 5 knots. The “wings” could also draw more power from the waves and wind.

Onboard, Pangeos is a mix between a five-star resort, a cruise ship and a city. Lazzarini says she can accommodate as many as 60,000 guests via a combination of villas and apartments. Other highlights include a rooftop mall, sprawling gardens, several pools and a supersized beach club. Naturally, the yacht is fitted with helipads, hangars and marinas to store choppers, toys and tenders.

Pangeos Terayacht Concept

In terms of construction, Lazzarini specified “the terayacht needs a terashipyard.” Essentially, Pangeos is too big to be built at an existing yard and thus would need a custom facility. Saudi Arabia has been put forward as a potential location. The designers estimate the vessel could be delivered in eight years at a cost of $8 billion.

Pangeos The Terayacht: World's Largest Floating City

By Heather Collier

Double the size of the Roman Colosseum, Pierpaolo Lazzarini returns with a new, monumental £6.8 billion terayacht concept. The turtle-shaped vessel known as 'Pangeos' is expected to be 550m long and 610m at its widest point. If achieved, this terayacht would become the largest floating structure ever built.

At its peak, Pangeos would be capable of hosting up to 60,000 guests; a floating city for ultra-high-net-worths.

Guests can unwind by staying in one of the many hotels, exploring its plethora of shopping centres, parks, beach clubs, resorts, as well as ship and aircraft ports, according to Italian design studio Lazzarini.

In recent years, Lazzarini has made a name for itself for conjuring up some of the industry's most daring, out-of-this-world concepts, including vessels that can fly, ginormous on-board garages and futuristic ships that push the boundaries of imagination.

They hope the ambitious scheme dating back to 2009 will soon become a reality following an NFT-related crowdfunding initiative to sell virtual spaces on the watercraft. If achieved, the project is said to take a jaw-dropping eight years to build.

Lazzarini have hinted that the vessel would have its very own shipyard built specifically for its creation, and would be launched out of Saudi Arabia.

" A Terayacht needs a Terashipyard ," the designers said. " The conception of a similar-sized vessel, involves the realisation of a specific shipyard/dam infrastructure that floods to levitate the terayacht when it will be launched."

" The imagined Terashipyard infrastructure is 650 metres wide and 600 metres long, providing direct access to the sea. "

With 30 metres of draft, the ship's enormous hull is made up of nine different bows and subdivided into several blocks. The structure also boasts a giant gate aft that allows vessels to enter this floating metropolis.

It would be powered by nine high-temperature superconductor (HTS) engines, each fully electric motor capable of a mind-blowing 16,800hp and powered by various onboard energy sources.

The design team also claim it would be able to use "wings" to cruise without expending too much energy, making this super-structure highly eco-conscious.

" Pushed from a jet drive transmission, the tera-structure will be able to cruise at a speed of five knots ," Lazzarini said.

" While sailing, the large wings will gain energy from the breaking of the waves and Pangeos will cruise perpetually without emissions around the planet Earth's seas.   Further, the rooftop area is lined with solar panels, which provide part of the necessary clean energy to power the terayacht ."

In terms of accommodation, guests will be able to stay in a wide variety of luxury residences, from apartments and houses to "super villas" and royal palaces.

" The virtual spaces of the watercraft can also be purchased under an NFT collection, and users will be able to collect certain content and access the virtual properties with their credentials ," Lazzarini said.

Similar credentials will also be used as a property deposit in case of real construction.

" The terayacht proposal takes its name from Pangea, the supercontinent that existed millions of years ago during the late Paleozoic and early Mesozoic eras ," Lazzarini adds.

"The virtual spaces of the watercraft can also be purchased under an NFT collection, and users will be able to collect certain content and access the virtual properties with their credentials" Pierpaolo Lazzarini, Lazzarini Design Studio

$8 billion turtle-shaped luxury yacht could become the largest floating structure ever built

Nathaniel Bahadursingh

The latest luxury boat to hit the market is Pangeos -- named after Pangea, a supercontinent that existed from 200 million to 335 million years ago. And if those seem like big numbers, wait until you hear how many dollars it'll take to construct it: $8 billion, according to designers Lazzarini. — CNN

If funded and built, the sea turtle-shaped "terayacht" would be the largest floating structure ever built, spanning 1,800 feet long and 2,000 feet wide. Dubbed a “floating city,” the boat would feature hotels, shopping malls, parks, and ports for smaller vessels and aircraft to connect.

Due to its size, the yacht would require the construction of a special dam that would flood to levitate it before being launched. The designers have noted Saudi Arabia ’s King Abdullah Port as a potential building location. The shipyard would stretch approximately 2,133 feet wide and 1,969 feet long.

The yacht’s hull would be comprised of 30,000 "cells," and its draft would stretch 98 feet. It would be capable of moving at a speed of five knots. The boat’s “arms” would draw energy from the drag and waves that break against it. Rooftop solar panels would also provide power. Unlike cruise ships or other commercial sea voyages, Pangeos wouldn’t operate out of a port or have a set itinerary, "it would simply cruise around, making the journey the destination." Lazzarini's team hopes for construction on this massive undertaking in 2033, with an estimated eight-year build period.

Watch: Saudi Arabia’s Turtle-shaped ‘Floating City’ Is Set To Be The World’s Largest Boat

Designed in the shape of a turtle, a terayatch is all prepared to become the world’s largest floating structure.

Lazzarini, the terayatch designer, and Pangeos estimated the cost of building it to be approximately $8 billion (about ₹65,000 crores). The gigantic boat is named after Pangea, a supercontinent that is said to have existed about 200 million to 335 million years ago.

The makers are planning to build it like a “floating city”, mentioned CNN. It’s set to measure 1,800 feet in length and 2,000 feet in width. The huge boat is capable of accommodating about 60,000 people at once.

Video Credits: SWNS / YouTube

Of course, to build such a vast structure, the designers would also require a special place.

The designers proposed Saudi Arabia as the construction location. It will require nearly one square kilometre of the sea to be dug out and a circular dam to be built before the building starts.

The makers of the terawatt have selected space based at King Abdullah Port as the most suitable location. You can look at the video posted by Lazzarini on YouTube. It shows what this terayacht will look like.

Social media users reportedly took to the channel’s comment section and expressed curiosity regarding the terayatch. Many of them wondered how it would handle the waves. It appeared to be an interesting design for the users. A user mentioned that it would be interesting to see how the vessel operates in a strong sea storm, even as it’ll not have the speed to run away from it.

One other user mentioned that it was a doable concept and not much forward-facing resistance if the structure of the light material could be made to float on the multihulls parallel to one other and cut through the navigation direction.

The term “terayacht” is used to refer to vessels that are bigger than mega, super, and Giga yachts. It may not sound like an accurate word, but the term exists. And the terayacht is also going to double up as a floating city.

Pierpaolo Lazzarini makes a triumphant comeback. With a new, massive £6.8 billion terayacht proposal. It is twice the size of the Roman Colosseum.

The “Pangeos,” a turtle-shaped ship, is anticipated to be 550 meters long and 610 meters broad at its widest point. If built, this terayacht would surpass all previous records for the size of floating structures.

Up to 60,000 guests might get accommodated in Pangeos. It is a floating city for exceedingly wealthy individuals.

According to Italian design company Lazzarini, visitors can unwind by staying in one of the several hotels. They can visit its abundance of shopping malls, parks, beach clubs, resorts, and ship and airplane terminals.

In recent years, Lazzarini has established a reputation for creating some of the industry’s most audacious, fantastical concepts. Such as flying ships, enormous onboard garages, and futuristic ships that push the limits of imagination.

They hope the ambitious plan, which dates back to 2009, will soon materialize after a crowdfunding campaign tied to NFT that sold virtual berths aboard the vessel. If realized, the project would reportedly take an incredible eight years to complete.

According to Lazzarini, they would build the ship in its shipyard. That was created especially for it and got launched from Saudi Arabia.

According to the designers, “a Terayacht needs a Terashipyard. The design of a ship of a similar size entails the construction of a specific shipyard/dam infrastructure that will flood to lift the terayacht when it gets launched.”

Six hundred fifty meters broad and 600 meters long, the hypothetical Terashipyard infrastructure offers easy access to the water.

The ship’s massive hull, which has a 30-meter draught, is separated into many blocks. It is composed of nine bows. The building also has a monumental entrance at the back that allows ships to enter this floating city.

Nine high-temperature superconductor (HTS) engines, each capable of an astounding 16,800 horsepower, would propel it. Each is fuelled by different onboard energy sources.

Additionally, the design team asserts that it may employ “wings” to travel without using a lot of energy. It would make this superstructure extremely eco-conscious.

According to Lazzarini , the tera-structure can cruise at five knots when powered by a jet drive transmission.

“Pangeos will eternally cruise the oceans of the planet Earth without emitting any emissions because when sailing, the enormous wings will gain energy from breaking the waves.

The rooftop area is also covered in solar panels. It contributes to the clean energy needed to run the terayacht.”

Guests will have access to a wide range of luxurious dwellings, from apartments and homes to “mega villas” and royal palaces.

According to Lazzarini. “Users can collect certain content and access the virtual properties using their credentials. They can also acquire The boat’s virtual areas under an NFT collection.

In the event of the actual building, similar credentials will also be utilized as a property deposit.

The supercontinent Pangea, which existed millions of years ago during the early Mesozoic and late Paleozoic ages, is where the name “terayacht proposal” derives from, continues Lazzarini.

What is Pangeos, the turtle-shaped floating city set in Saudi Arabia?

saudi arabia yacht turtle

Pangeos, a futuristic concept of a floating turtle-shaped city, might soon see the light of day in Saudi Arabia. The terayacht is named after Pangea, the ancient supercontinent that existed millions of years ago.

The designer of this ambitious proposal is Pierpaolo Lazzarini , a renowned designer known for his unique and visionary designs of motor vehicles. Pangeos marks his latest ambitious undertaking, and he has put forth a proposal that promises to be a marvel of engineering and design. Pangeos aims to sail from King Abdul Aziz Port in Saudi Arabia to roam the whole world.

The yacht that has it all

The proposed terayacht would feature a wide range of amenities such as rooftop gardens, malls, international helicopter pads, resorts, and many other constructions. The turtle town is proposed to be 650 meters wide and 600 meters long . For comparison, the current largest yacht is the Azzam, which is 180 meters long.

The floating turtle town is designed to be powered by advanced technology, consisting of nine high-temperature superconductor fully electric engines that will enable the vessel to maintain a steady speed of 5 knots . Additionally, the ship will harness the power of the waves it encounters by using its wings to generate renewable energy and supplement it with solar panels on the rooftops.

Lazzarini estimates that an investment of $8 billion over eight years would be required to construct this ambitious project. This investment would go towards building the infrastructure, hiring the workforce, and acquiring the necessary materials to bring this idea to life.

When completed, Pangeos could accommodate as many as 60,000 people. This would make it an actual city on water, with all the amenities and infrastructure necessary to support such a large population.

Saudi Arabia Is Having The $5B Terayacht Pangeos Built In A Turtle Shape, Runs On Renewable Energy

Zinger key points.

  • The terayacht will stretch 1,800 feet in length and has a beam of 2,000 feet.
  • The terayacht Pangeos is powered by nine HTS fully electric engines that keep the vessel at a constant speed of 5 knots.

Saudi Arabia has announced a new project, this time a $5 billion terayacht so big it will make oligarchs' superyachts look like toys. The Saudi terayacht has turtle-shaped and is supposed to house 60,000 people . If completed, the terayacht named Pangeos will become the largest floating structure ever built.

What Happened: Italian design studio Lazzarini  has envisioned a new way of luxurious living inside a massive vessel that can house an entire city.

The terayacht will stretch 1,800 feet in length and has a beam of 2,000 feet, which will allow the ceilings in the rooms to be much higher than standard.

Terayacht Pangeos is powered by nine HTS fully electric engines that keep the vessel at a constant speed of 5 knots. This innovation will also generate renewable energy from the breaking of the waves on the ship's wings, and it has a rooftop is lined with solar panels to help power it.

In the lower part of the vessel, the design team also included 30,000 cells, or cluster compartments, and provided an unsinkable floating solution for the basement. The Saudi terayacht also comes with a portico located on the stern of the ship, which will allow vessels to enter the city.

This incredibly massive structure includes other features such as a beach club, mall, side apartments, and myriad modern amenities.

If completed, terayacht Pangeos will be launched from a shipyard in Saudi Arabia and will have no destination, instead, it will perpetually be sailing around the world.

There is no question that this terayacht will be meant for sailing enthusiasts with a pretty penny to spend .

There will be villas, shops, and even a beach club on the turtle-shaped yacht. On each turtle foot of the one-of-a-kind floating city, there will be 19 villas and 64 apartments. A rooftop garden and even a mall will be available for your enjoyment and shopping.

The city will consist of nine bows each divided into various blocks beginning at the entrance of the port leading to the main area that will further extend into the terraced villas paving way to the private houses, buildings and rooftop terraces.

Additionally, it will include an upper turtle shell zone that will serve as a base for flying vehicles to land. Definitely, the future has arrived.

Given that we’re speaking about turtle superyacht, it is designed to sail around the world stop-free, but it has been proposed for Saudi. Additionally, this is a properly green turtle with green energy supplies. Pangeos will draw power from the ocean waves and solar panel roofs.

Do you feel ready to jump in? Thank goodness Pangeos isn’t moving slowly. The megaproject should be finished in eight years, according to estimates.
