Entries are open for the Superyacht Cup Palma 2024

Palma, Mallorca - December 7, 2023 -  The Superyacht Cup Palma organisers have opened the doors to entries for the 2024 event while looking ahead to a busy and potentially memorable Mediterranean sailing season.

The Notice of Race is now available for the 19-22 June regatta , which will mark the 28th edition of Europe's longest-running superyacht festival of sail. The Superyacht Cup Palma invites entries over 24m in length and, to ensure fair racing, will use ORCsy rating rules and scoring, including the new Weather Routing Scoring method pioneered by ORC.

A regular feature of the Mediterranean season, The Superyacht Cup Palma will take place just weeks ahead of the America's Cup in Barcelona — the last occasion the America's Cup came to the Med in Valencia in 2007. SYC welcomed its largest-ever entry of 52 superyachts.

"All the indications are it's going to be quite a season in 2024, and we are ready, willing and able to welcome back returning yachts and greet any and all newcomers," said SYC Event Director Kate Branagh .

Among possible first-time entrants are the 39.4m Hoek Truly Classic 128 yacht Halekai , returning from a world cruise.

"It will be a debut at The Superyacht Cup Palma for Halekai," said captain James Saddington , "but I did the regatta back in 2019 on Kealoha, so I know what a wonderful and enjoyable event it can be with the professional racing and informal social scene — it will be great to be back."

40m Dykstra's Velsheda

Meanwhile, there is also the prospect of a return of the Swan 100 Onyx and regular attendee Velsheda  in what would be a third successive appearance for the celebrated J Class yacht.

"Velsheda and The Superyacht Cup Palma seem made for each other as the many repeat visits indicate," said her recently appointed captain, Will Gibbon , the yacht's former first mate.

"2024 looks like it could be quite a special year in the sailing community, so it will be good to be in the heart of the action starting in Palma next June," he added.

The J Class entries will use ORCsy rules and scoring for the first time.

SYC organisers are also delighted to be able to again welcome back valued supporters in the shape of Preferred Hotel Partner St. Regis Mardavall Mallorca, Destination Partner New Zealand, Official Timepiece Jaquet Droz and Silver Partners Astilleros, Pantaenius, RSB Rigging, North Sails and Southern Spars, as well as official clothing supplier Marinepool.

Kate Branagh added: " It is also wonderful to be able to continue our long-standing partnership with the prestigious Real Club Náutico de Palma for a further year. They will be our host and base once again, with more moorings available at the RCNP, which is a popular choice, so we advise early booking.

SY Cup Palma 2023

"As ever, all of us at The Superyacht Cup Palma are looking forward to the coming year and another gathering celebrating sailing and friendly, competitive racing — which is what it is all about."

Superyacht Cup Palma gets off to a great start among rookies and prominent veterans

  • Alessandro Giuzio
  • February 18, 2024

Superyacht Cup Palma is looking forward to summer 2024 with great enthusiasm. In fact, the 28th edition of Europe’s longest-running superyacht regatta has already announced that it has welcomed an interesting trio of first-time entrants. The event, scheduled June 19-22 in Palma de Mallorca , is experienced and celebrated as a veritable festival of sailboats: in fact, the Superyacht Cup Palma sees the return of the same wonderful boats every year, alongside those making their debut on the highly contested race course in the bay of the Balearic archipelago island. Established in 1996, the Superyacht Club Palma attracts some of the world’s largest and most prestigious sailboats in a highly competitive regatta held in reliable sea breeze conditions and a relaxed and fun atmosphere. In addition, the event provides a private and informal social environment for networking at the Yacht Club Race Village, which for a few days becomes the focal point for owners, guests, sponsors and sailors. The exclusive Real Club Náutico de Palma was chosen as the venue for the 25th anniversary of the Superyacht Cup in 2020 and has remained the event’s new home ever since.

Among the newcomers to the 2024 edition, as mentioned, the organizers of the Majorcan regatta have recently announced the registration of some outstanding teams. These are a pair of Hoek designs-the 32-meter Namuun (ex-Simba) by Turquoise Yachts and the 40-meter Hoek Truly Classic Halekai, built by Pendennis-alongside the striking 28-meter ketch Tawera (ex-Catalyst) , a Ron Holland Design by Alloy Yachts NZ.

“ We have been aware of the Superyacht Cup Palma for many years and were looking forward to being able to participate in what is clearly a great regatta “, stated Mike Mahoney , owner of Tawera. “ Now that we are here in the Mediterranean, it is simply too good an opportunity to pass up, so see you in June on the starting line! “.

Participants in the Superyacht Cup Palma 2024 will have to compete with the cup holders, Team Rose aboard the 24-meter Wally , which has also already confirmed its entry. Among the fiercest opponents will then be the Swan 100 Onyx , a former runner-up in 2023, and the J Class Rainbow : the latter participated in its last Superyacht Cup Palma in 2014, but has just emerged from a major refit that makes it particularly fearsome.

Another important participant of superyachts making his welcome return to the Palma regatta is finally Pendennis Shipyard , which returns as a Gold Sponsor. “ We are excited and pleased to return to support the Superyacht Cup Palma ” said CEO Toby Allies. “ It’s great to see a significant number of yachts participating this year that were built or repaired by us at our shipyard in Falmouth, UK, or at Pendennis Vilanova’s technical service center in Spain “.

It’s no accident that modern America’s Cup boats and Formula 1 race cars are similar. In fact, in addition to America’s Cup, several professional boat racing leagues like the SailGP (which will be racing in New York City this weekend), and the new E1 Series (which features electric-powered, hydrofoiling racing boat teams owned by an eclectic list of celebrity owners) aspire to deliver Formula 1-like racing on the water.

And those similarities go deeper than just marketing hype. In fact, the Ineos Britannia team has partnered with the Mercedes-AMG Petronas F1 Team’s Applied Science division to bring together some of the best talent from the F1 and sailing for the America’s Cup. The partnership created a team of more than 100 designers and engineers who helped develop the race boat at the Mercedes-AMG Petronas F1 base in Brackley, Northamptonshire.

And since Mercedes-AMG Petronas F1 Team drivers Lewis Hamilton and George Russell with Team Principal and CEO Toto Wolff just happened to be in Spain for the Spanish Grand Prix this weekend, their recent visit to the Ineos Britannia base in Barcelona as preparations continue ahead of the 37th America’s Cup makes perfect sense—and a great photo op!

Hamilton, Russell and Wolff were welcomed by Ineos Britannia Team Principal and Skipper Sir Ben Ainslie, along with Ineos founder Sir Jim Ratcliffe, who took them on a tour of the facilities before George and Toto joined Sir Ben on the water.

“It was a privilege for all of us at Ineos Britannia to show Toto, Lewis, and George around our base here in Barcelona,” said Sir Ben. “They have been supporters of the project throughout, and it was therefore very fitting for us to give them a closer look at our race boat for the first time. It was great to get the guys out on the water today too; they know their way around a car but made sailing our AC75 look a touch too easy for my liking. We’re always looking for new and emerging talent to take the helm, but I didn’t realize we’d find it in the F1 paddock! It was a brilliant day and I look forward to supporting them all this weekend at the Spanish Grand Prix.”

Toto commented: “Today has been an amazing experience. We’ve got our headquarters at Brackley where a lot of the Ineos Britannia design work takes place, but it has been brilliant to see the base here in Barcelona. This is where the action will take place later this year and the facilities the team has are excellent.

“I also thoroughly enjoyed my experience as a ‘cyclor’ (cycling sailor) on the team’s AC75 race boat too. It is a real physical test and it’s easy to forget just how athletic the team must be. We are all out-and-out racers. Whilst our core objective as a business is winning on land in F1, this is an exciting project with Sir Ben and Sir Jim, and we are delighted to be a part of it.”

Lewis said: “It has been so exciting seeing the work of Ineos Britannia at the factory in Brackley over the past few years. To come here to Barcelona and see it all coming together, including the race boat for the first time, was so impressive. The technology involved is incredible and my mind is absolutely blown! I’m really excited to see how the team gets on later this year and I want to wish them the very best of luck in their pursuit of the America’s Cup.”

George added: “What an incredible experience! To get the opportunity to sail with Sir Ben and get a true sense of the speed and maneuverability of the Ineos Britannia AC75 Race Boat was amazing. It felt like we were floating through the air; it definitely got the blood pumping!”

And Mercedes-AMG Petronas is not the only F1 team with direct connections to the America’s Cup. Alinghi Red Bull Racing has been working closely with Red Bull Advanced Technologies, the high-performance vehicle engineering division of Red Bull Racing. Despite the apparent difference between the two sports, both Formula 1 and the America's Cup share roots in high-performance engineering.

Following Max Verstappen's visit to the Alinghi Red Bull base last year, two motorsports icons, Visa Cash App RB F1 driver Daniel Ricciardo and 8-time MotoGP champion Marc Márquez took it a step further. They not only got a chance to foil on the Swiss challenger's two AC40 yachts, they also raced on the America's Cup venue. Swapping wheels for sails, Ricciardo and Márquez went head-to-head along Barcelona's seafront for a friendly contest, feeling the adrenaline as they reached speeds of almost 50 mph.

"The way these boats are built and the structure feels a lot like the cockpit of a Formula One car," Ricciardo commented. "They're super sensitive with the wind, so aerodynamics has some crossover as well. It's a lot like what we do, with small movements and everything needs a lot of finesse."

The Swiss team's skipper Arnaud Psarofaghis was tasked with getting the two athletes up to speed before the AC40s went out. "Daniel took my seat on the boat, and followed all my directions as I sent them through from the chase boat," Psarofaghis said. "Both Marc and Daniel were dropped in the deep end today, and they adapted really quickly. Overall, it was a super inspiring day out on the water with these guys."

Although it was a lower-stakes race for Ricciardo ahead of the upcoming Spanish Grand Prix this Sunday, the friendly competition with his Red Bull colleague might just be the perfect preparation as he gears up for the racetrack.

13 arrested after yacht fireworks trigger Greek forest fire

ATHENS, Greece (AFP)— Greek authorities on Saturday arrested 13 people after fireworks launched from a yacht set off a new wildfire on an island near Athens as the country confronts a new season of deadly summer fires.

The mayor of the island of Hydra expressed “outrage” after the fire was started late Friday and vowed legal action against those responsible.

Dozens of wildfires in Greece this week have left at least one person dead already.

The latest blaze was “caused by fireworks launched from a boat and burned the only pine forest on the island in a place that is difficult to access and has no road,” Hydra’s firefighting team said on Facebook.

Thirteen people accused of involvement in the fireworks have been arrested after a fire service inquiry and will be presented before a prosecutor on Sunday, said a fire service statement.

No details on the suspects were given. Greece has toughened its penalties for arson, with perpetrators now facing up to 20 years in prison and fines of up to 200,000 euros ($214,000).

On top of calling for legal action against “irresponsible” people behind the fireworks, Hydra’s Mayor Giorgos Koukoudakis told the ERT public broadcaster that authorities had to create more anti-fire zones and roads through forests.

Another fire raged Saturday on the island of Andros, emergency services said. Four villages were evacuated and planes and helicopters were brought in to water bomb the flames.

The civil protection service called for extreme vigilance because the risk of fires was “very high”, particularly in the Attica region, the Peloponnese peninsula and in central Greece.

Greece has been bracing for a difficult summer as authorities warn that strong winds and high temperatures have increased the danger.

After its warmest winter ever, the Mediterranean country recorded its first heatwave of the year last week, with temperatures rising above 44 degrees Celsius (111 Fahrenheit) in some locations.

Firefighters on Friday battled wildfires fanned by three days of fierce winds that left at least one person dead, a 55-year-old man who collapsed and died while fighting flames around his village.

Last year, a fierce two-week heatwave was followed by devastating wildfires in which 20 people died.

Scientists warn that fossil fuel emissions caused by humans are worsening the length and intensity of heatwaves around the world.

Rising temperatures are leading to extended wildfire seasons and increasing the area burned by the blazes, according to the United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change.

Melvin, Findlay and Burnham head the National Sailing Hall of Fame’s Class of 2024

  • Copy Link copied

NEWPORT, Rhode Island (AP) — Pete Melvin, who helped design breakthrough boats for the America’s Cup as well as the Nacra 17 used in the Olympics, and Conn Findlay, who won Olympic medals in sailing and rowing, head the list of 12 inductees in the National Sailing Hall of Fame’s Class of 2024.

As part of the firm M&M, Melvin helped design the giant trimaran that tech tycoon Larry Ellison’s BMW Oracle Racing used to win the 2010 America’s Cup in a one-off regatta against Alinghi of Switzerland’s giant catamaran. M&M also drafted the design rules for the 72-foot catamarans used in the 2013 America’s Cup, which ushered in foiling in sailing’s marquee regatta.

M&M designed the Nacra 17 catamaran that debuted in the 2016 Olympics. For the 2021 Olympics in Tokyo, the Nacra 17 added foils. Melvin sailed in the 1988 Olympics and has won numerous national and world titles.

Findlay won a total of four Olympic medals, including a bronze medal with Dennis Conner in the Tempest class in 1976. In rowing, he won two golds and one bronze in coxed pairs. He sailed in the America’s Cup three times, including with winning skipper Ted Turner aboard Courageous in 1977.

Also entering the hall is Kevin Burnham, who won a silver medal in the 470 class in the 1992 Olympics with Morgan Reeser and then won gold with Paul Foerster in 2004.

In one of the most memorable races in Olympic history, Foerster and Burnham aggressively match-raced the British boat to the back of the fleet and stayed ahead the entire race to win the gold medal. At the finish line, Burnham, then 47, waved to race officials, let out a whoop and then did a backflip into the Saronic Gulf off Athens, barefoot and still wearing his sunglasses. Burnham died in 2020.

The induction will be Oct. 4-5 at the Chicago Yacht Club.

Among the other inductees are Jan C. O’Malley, a three-time US Sailing Yachtswoman of the Year and the first winner of the IYRU Women’s World Sailing Championship; Charles Ulmer, a national champion and race winner throughout the 1970s and 80s; and Richard Tillman, the 1965 Sailor of the Year who held national, North American and world titles in the Snipe, Finn, Laser, Sunfish and Windsurfing classes.

Also going into the hall are Franklin Wood; Allegra Mertz; brothers Eric Hall and Ben Hall; Gary Mull; and Carl Alberg.
