David Geffen’s Yacht: Everything You Want To Know

Ian Fortey

David Geffen is a businessman most famous for his work running record labels and a film studio. His net worth is estimated at around $7.7 billion and he’s also been the owner of one of the world’s largest yachts for some years now. He owns a second yacht as well, one called Pelorus that clocks in at 115 meters in length. That means Geffen is the owner of at least two megayachts

What is David Geffen’s Yacht Called?

where is rising sun yacht

Geffen named his yacht the Rising Sun and it was built back in 2004 and then refitted in 2007. The yacht was originally built by German yacht maker Lurssen and originally it belonged to Oracle founder Larry Ellison, but Geffen purchased it in 2010. Word is that Ellison thought it was just too big and ended up buying a smaller yacht that he felt was more manageable. That said, Geffen apparently owned a percentage share of the yacht since 2006.

How Big is the Rising Sun?

With a gross tonnage of 7,841 GT, the yacht is not as heavy as you might think for one of its size. The Rising Sun length clocks in at just under 453 feet with a beam of 60.7 feet. The yacht features a steel hull with an aluminum superstructure. It ranks as one of the largest yachts in the world .

How Much Did David Geffen Pay for the Rising Sun Yacht?

It’s been reported that Geffen paid Ellison a staggering $590 million for the Rising Sun however other reports suggest the vessel was $200 million. Given the size of the yacht and the time it was built plus various amenities it seems more likely the true price is closer to $200 million. That’s speculation and also some educated guessing as a $590 million motor yacht sale in 2010 would likely have raised more flags in the media. It would make the Rising Sun one of the most expensive yachts ever, and that’s simply never been claimed by many sources.

The value of the luxury yacht has been speculated to currently be between $300 million and $400 million after various refits and upgrades that have been added over the years. Despite the cost there is no yacht charter available to offset that for Geffen.

How Fast is the Rising Sun Yacht?

The Rising sun has a maximum speed of 28 knots and a cruising speed of 16 knots. This is achieved by 4 MTU 20V 8000 M90 diesel engines producing 48,000 hp.

What’s the Interior of the Rising Sun Like?

where is rising sun yacht

A crew of 45 is needed to keep the Rising Sun operating and that includes taking care of the up to 18 guests in 9 staterooms. That includes one master suite and then 8 double suites.

Geffen has numerous amenities on board to ensure a luxurious stay for guests who, in the past, have included people like Tom Hanks, Barack and Michelle Obama, Mariah Carey and even Jeff Bezos and Oprah Winfrey. For a short time there were stories that this was, in fact, Oprah’s yacht because she had been spotted on board in 2013 when she was on holiday. However, she was just borrowing the yacht and does not own a yacht of her own.

There is both a sauna and a beauty salon on board as well as a large swimming pool and an elevator to travel between the five decks. There are 8,000 square meters of living space available between those decks which include teak decks and bathrooms finished in onyx.

The top deck of the yacht serves as a master suit and features a double sized cinema screen. The layout has been described as being like the pit of an avocado, meaning the movie screen is embedded in the wall in a way that creates an archway that can be traveled around it. A normal sized theater exists elsewhere on the yacht for the rest of the passengers to enjoy.

In addition to movies, there’s also a full size basketball court on board if anyone is looking to get into a game. The court also doubles as a helicopter landing pad. Of course there’s a well-equipped gym for working out as well. When it’s time to relax, the yacht features its own fully stocked wine cellar.

Unfortunately, Geffen has not welcomed media onto the yacht so images of the interior are few and far between. As you can imagine, he’s a man who enjoys his privacy and doesn’t want to share his space very openly. In fact, mentioning it has backfired on him in the past.

Back in 2020, sometimes after he was spotted refueling at Sea Fuels Marine in New Bedford, Geffen made an Instagram post about how he was self-isolating on his yacht in the Grenadines during Covid. The post went over poorly with people pointing out it was a little tone deaf to the average person who doesn’t have a multi-million dollar yacht to escape on. He deactivated his Instagram shortly thereafter.

The Bottom Line

David Geffen is a billionaire businessman known for is work in the music industry such as running Geffen Records and Asylum Records. His superyacht Rising Sun was built for $200 million though it’s been reported he paid as much as $590 million for it. The yacht is one of the largest luxury yachts in the world at 453 feet and features many amenities including a massive, double sized cinema screen, a basketball court, and a large pool.  The motor yacht is a notorious hot spot for celebrity visitors that range from Paul McCartney to Bruce Springsteen to Chris Rock, Leonardo DiCaprio and Katy Perry among many others.

Billionaire and entertainment mogul David Geffen reportedly purchased the superyacht for $590 million from the Oracle founder Larry Ellison. It was reported that wealthy people love spending money on yachts, and about 88% of the luxury market can be associated to spending on yachts. For this reason, it is not at all surprising that billionaires are spending so much money buying yachts . Yachts can be considered as the pinnacle of luxury and decadence and about $22 billion annually are spent on Yachts by the wealthy people. The Rising Sun has hosted numerous famous celebrities including American talk show host Oprah Winfrey and Academy Award winner Leonardo DiCaprio on board and even Amazon founder Jeff Bezos was seen hanging out in the superyacht.

Geffen has cruised everywhere using the Superyacht from St. Bart's in the Caribbean to Portofino to Italy and even Ibiza, Spain. He loves travelling using his yacht but not without his friends and some high profile celebrities. Among the guests in his massive yacht are Julia Roberts, Maria Shriver, Steven Spielberg, JJ Abrams, Karlie Kloss, Peter Harrington-Cressman, Paul McCartney and even Michelle and Barack Obama. Take a look inside the majestic yacht of Geffen.

The Rising Sun is a motor yacht which was designed by Jon Bannenberg and was built and constructed in 2004 by German shipbuilder Lürssen. The yacht reportedly costs $200 million to build. The yacht was built at Lürssen’s Bremen shipyard for the founder and CEO of Oracle Corporation, Larry Ellison. It was delivered to Ellison in June 2004. Since 2010, David Geffen has owned the yacht. Geffen bought half of the share of the 454-foot megayacht in 2007 and decided to buy the yacht in full in 2010 which totaled his payment for $590 million. The exact estimated value of the yacht is still unclear but as of 2019, the yacht was valued for $300 million. After Geffen bought it, he had the yacht refitted in the period of just six months.

The motor yacht has a tonnage of 7,841 GT and has a length of 138 m that is about 452 ft 9 in. It utilizes the installed power of the diesel engine of 4 × MTU 20V 8000 M90 with 36,000 kW. It also has 4 propellers as its propulsion and has the speed of 28 knots that can comfortably run at the speed of 26 knots but can run at the maximum speed of 30 knots. It was built with steel hull and an aluminum superstructure that includes a teak deck. It also features an anchor stabilizer which provides the people on board an exceptional comfort. Unlike some other luxury yachts, the Rising Sun is not available for private charter.

https://www.pinterest.ph/pin/532058143448158436/

The superyacht has about eighty two rooms and has the ability to accommodate about 18 guests and 55 staff and crew members. The eighteen guests can comfortably stay in the nine suites at the yacht which can ensure a relaxed luxury yacht experience . The massive yacht even has a basketball court on board. The top deck is entirely dedicated to the owner which includes a double-height cinema. Aside from the basketball court, there is also a wine cellar and a movie theater which can be found among the eighty two rooms of the yacht.

The interior design of the yacht was designed by design house Seccombe Design. The exterior design on the other hand was designed by Bannenberg & Rowell and was refitted in 2011 after David Geffen has requested for it. The builders of the Rising Sun have experimented with the extensive use of some structural glass that gives off a clean and stripped-down profile for the yacht. This includes the builders extensively working on the engineering and systems of the yacht. The exposure of the yacht’s structure is one of the overarching themes in the superyacht’s design.

https://www.pinterest.ph/pin/400961173065183662/

There is a reason why a lot of famous celebrities and public figure enjoy hanging out at the superyacht. For the added comfort and entertainment, there is a sauna, underwater lights, beauty salon, elevator and gym at the superyacht. It offers the luxuries of the land space on a secluded area which gives them the privacy that they need. The general arrangement of the layout of the Rising Sun has given the guests spacious cabins which have a direct access to the exterior side decks of the yacht. With the use of the 45-degree indents in the yacht’s superstructure, the guests are also protected from the weather.

The yacht has so much space that the guests can roam around and just party. The top deck was designed entirely for the owner’s entertainment. The guests can also enjoy the double-height cinema which was embedded just like the stone of the avocado.

Insider Today

Billionaire and entertainment mogul David Geffen is in the hot seat this week for a "tone-deaf" Instagram post about isolating on his $590 million yacht in the Caribbean during the coronavirus pandemic, The Guardian reported .

On Saturday, Geffen posted photos showing his  superyacht, Rising Sun, in the Grenadines with the caption, "Sunset last night. Isolated in the Grenadines avoiding the virus. I hope everybody is staying safe." The backlash on Twitter was prompt, with people calling his post "shameful" and out of touch, reported Business Insider's Katie Warren . He appears to have since  deactivated his Instagram .

It's the same yacht that  Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos was spotted on in the Balearics, Spain, last summer. In a photo posted to Geffen's Instagram , Bezos was seen with his girlfriend, Lauren Sanchez; the supermodel Karlie Kloss; and former Goldman Sachs CEO Lloyd Blankfein.

But Bezos and crew aren't the first to cruise the high seas with Geffen, who appears to love hosting celebrities, musicians, and actors. Leonardo DiCaprio, Bradley Cooper, Oprah Winfrey, and Barack and Michelle Obama have also previously kicked back on Geffen's 400-foot-plus superyacht.

Here's a look at Rising Sun — and the big names who have been on board.

The entertainment mogul David Geffen, founder of DreamWorks, SKG, Asylum Records, Geffen Records, and DGS Records, owns Rising Sun. According to Forbes, he's worth an estimated $7.8 billion.

But Geffen likely won't have any friends on board anytime soon during the coronavirus pandemic.

While the combined $590 million that Geffen spent to buy Rising Sun is an astronomical figure, it pales in comparison to the world's most expensive yacht. That title goes to the Russian billionaire Roman Abramovich's yacht Eclipse, which is estimated to be worth anywhere from $600 million to $1.5 billion.

A Closer Look at the $200 Million Rising Sun Superyacht

There are a few different categories of yachts in the world. As a yacht enthusiast you might hear a few different terms being thrown around in the descriptions, such as Super yacht up to 100 feet in length or Mega yacht up to 300 feet. These are the larger water craft and there is even a giga yacht which are those that are over 300 feet in length. With this in mind, the Rising Sun, which is often referred to as a Super yacht far exceeds the parameters set for the classification, so if we're going to be particular about the classification, we'd call it a Giga yacht. However it's categorized, the Rising Sun is one of the most amazing private yachts afloat and we're going to take a closer look at the features which make this multi-million dollar ship so special.

Rising Sun Yacht built by Lurssen: A Celebrity Choice

This yacht has hosted some of the most celebrated personalities in the film and record industry as well as the political arena. Barack and Michelle Obama were seen vacationing on the Rising Sun in 2017, and it's also hosted Hollywood stars including Oprah Winfrey , Julia Roberts , Leonardo DeCaprio, Tom Hanks and others. The co-founder of Dreamworks, film producer and record executive David Geffen is the owner of the Rising Sun, which ranks as the 9th largest yacht in the world, currently. Depending on which source you consult, the cost to build this giant is estimated to be $200 million and some have it as high as $400 million but we believe that the base cost was the latter and the extra figures come from upgrades .

The history of the Rising Sun

The Rising Sun is the commissioned craft of its first owner Larry Ellison, who partnered with David Geffen and is the current CEO of the Oracle Corporation. He ordered the building of the ship from the German shipbuilding company Lürssen . The Rising Sun is the design of Jon Bannenberg, who has since passed away. The ship was delivered to Mr. Ellison in 2004, who shared ownership with David Geffen until 2010, when he decided that it was too large, so he sold his share to Geffen, who is now the sole owner of the yacht and Ellison bought a smaller yacht.

Specifications and details

The Rising Sun yacht is constructed of a strong aluminum superstructure with a displacement steel hull and teak decks, in accordance with Germanischer Lloyd classification society rules. The ship requires 4 MTU 12,061 horsepower diesel engines to propel it though the water. The average cruising speed is 26 knots and the top speed of the ship is 30 knots. To make the yacht more comfortable and safe in rough waters, it is fitted with zero speed stabilizers for times when she is at anchor. The Rising Sun measures 453.97 ft in length with a 62.34 ft beam, a draft of 16.08 ft and gross tonnage of 7841 tons. The exterior was designed by Bannenberg & Rowel and the interior by Seccombe Design. It was built by Lurssen and refit in 2004 and 2011. At the time of the sale it was the 6th largest yacht in the world, but other new superyachts have displaced it to the 9th position.

Luxury amenities

It takes a crew of 45 to maintain and operate this massive vessel and they are housed in 30 cabins. The guests are housed in 8 cabins which can accommodate between 16 and 18 guests comfortably. The yacht has been designed with more than 8,000m² of living space, allowing for larger gathering areas as well as plenty of places to find privacy from the crowd of guests. There are a total of five decks with 82 rooms aboard the yacht. Some of the luxury amenities include a spa and gym so guests don't need to miss out on their daily workout routines. The Rising Sun is also quipped with a lift/elevator to take guests between the five decks. For practicality so guests/owners can come and go from any location, there is also a helipad on board. For fun in the sun there is a swimming pool as well as underwater lights for excellent illumination, and a sauna for relaxation. The ship also features air conditioning throughout the 82 rooms so guests can achieve the optimal room temperatures, even on hot days at sea, and there is also a Tender Garage, as well as a Cinema large enough to accommodate all guests for entertainment.

Final thoughts

The Rising Sun has only had two owners since it was built in 2004. Co-owners Larry Ellison and David Geffen shared it for a period of time, then Ellison sold his share to Geffen who is now the sole owner. The yacht was once the sixth largest yacht in the world, but is still considered a wonder coming in at ninth place. It's packed to the hilt with luxury amenities and there is plenty of space aboard with five decks and 82 rooms. The ship which cost $200 million to build is now valued somewhere between $3 and $4 million, and it has only increased in value with the passage of time and no doubt numerous upgrades to suit the preferences of the owner. It's served as the vessel that provides a source of recreation for some of the most famous people in the world including some of our most beloved Hollywood stars and even a former president and first lady. The Rising Sun is truly one of the most magnificent yachts that has ever been created, and those who are fortunate enough to be invited on board are in for a top notch luxury experience.

Lavish and looming, gigayacht bobbing in Portland harbor attracts curiosity and contempt

Some people view it as a symbol of wealth-hoarding. Others see it as a tourist attraction. Some believe it’s merely a sign of a changing Old Port. To entertainment mogul David Geffen, the 82-room, $400 million gigayacht floating in the Portland harbor is merely a part-time home.

A boat that is worth $381 million more than the most expensive home for sale on Maine Listings docked in Portland on Monday night. Though it’s not a boat, it’s not a yacht, it’s not a superyacht and it’s not even a megayacht. It’s a gigayacht and it’s the 20th largest in the world, according to the Robb Report, a chronicler of all things luxurious.

The yacht, named Rising Sun, is one of Geffen’s vacation homes. Geffen is the music and film producer behind The Eagles, Joni Mitchell, Bob Dylan and DreamWorks – the animation studio that produced, among many hits, “Shrek,” Shrek 2,” “Shrek the Third” and “Shrek Forever After.” Fifty-nine years after he launched his entertainment career, Geffen has landed himself at No. 229 on the Bloomberg Billionaires Index with a net worth of $9.14 billion.

Geffen is also pals with many celebrities, and he’s brought many of them aboard Rising Sun, including Paul McCartney, Oprah Winfrey and Julia Roberts.

Geffen’s accomplishment’s and social circle notwithstanding, all anyone could talk about in the Old Port on Tuesday afternoon was the gigayacht, itself.

“It’s friggin’ big,” said Owen Dionne, a deckhand at Portland Discovery Land Sea and Tours. Advertisement

At five stories high and 453 feet long, it’s certainly an eye-catcher. In the maritime vernacular, a yacht is generally at least 30 feet long, a superyacht is 80-100 feet long, a megayacht is 200 feet and a gigayacht stretches beyond 300 feet.

Rising Sun has a gym, a wine cellar, a spa, a movie theater and can accommodate up to 16 guests and 45 crew members, according to superyachtfan.com. It was built in 2004 by Lürssen Yachts, a German shipyard, for Oracle Corp. CEO Larry Ellison. Geffen bought it from Ellison in 2010.

This is the kind of information that Portland Discovery deckhands research to share with passengers.

“They all want to know who owns them,” Dionne said. “We research how many crew they have, how much they cost to run and to own. But mostly they’re just interested in the owners, though usually they’re not really famous people, they’re just rich people.”

Yachts are a dime a dozen to Dionne and Jack Coggeshall, manager at Portland Discovery. Coggeshall has seen Rising Sun many times over the course of his 11 years at Portland Discovery. But they still agree that it’s the biggest yacht they’ve seen in Portland’s waters and it’s quite a view to take in.

“It’s just unbelievable to see a private yacht that big,” Coggeshall said. Advertisement

One tidbit Dionne and Coggeshall might not have come across is the Rising Sun’s environmental impact. The diesel engines powering the gigayacht belch an estimated 16,320 tons of carbon-dioxide-equivalent gases into the atmosphere annually, almost 800 times what the average American generates in a year, according to a New York Times report citing the journal Sustainability.

IMPRESSIVE OR NOT

The gigayacht also caught tourists’ eyes at the Eastern Promenade – though not necessarily for the same reasons.

Dave and Dianne Rhodes were sitting on a bench on Tuesday afternoon taking in the distant Rising Sun. Dave Rhodes wasn’t looking at it in admiration, though.

“The obscene amount of pure spending gobs of money on nothing … the money could be used in such a better way,” he said.

The Rhodes sailed up from Rochester, New York, on their sailboat, the Lagerhead. They spent $39,000 on their boat – not necessarily cheap, but dwarfed by the value of the Rising Sun. But even if they had all the money in the world, they’d keep the Lagerhead. Advertisement

“We’re more interested in our sailboat,” Dianne Rhodes said.

Lobsterman Rob Rutter pauses on Portland’s Widgery Wharf after working on his boat Devocean. Rutter is ambivalent about the gigayacht bobbing in the harbor, saying it won’t affect his lobster prices one way or another.  Shawn Patrick Ouellette/Staff Photographer

Doug Sargent, a New Jersey resident, is similarly unimpressed by Rising Sun.

“It’s not interesting, it’s too blah,” Sargent said. “Buy that boat? It’s so far beyond comprehension that that’s not even one of my thoughts.”

However, Sargent said there are some upsides to a visitor like Geffen. Perhaps Geffen and his guests are spreading the wealth in the Old Port.

“I hope he’s helping the local economy,” he said.

Sargent, 79, lived in Portland until he was 13 years old and has watched the Old Port transform over the course of his life. It’s people like Geffen who have given the Old Port the money to change for the better, he said. Advertisement

Whether the arrival of the Rising Sun has positive or negative impacts on the city, lobsterman Rob Rutter is ambivalent. He’s making the same amount of money for his catch even when people like Geffen visit Portland.

“I didn’t even think that yacht being in town was going to make a story other than ‘it was here,’ ” Rutter said.

It’s not entirely clear where Rising Sun is floating while it awaits its next journey. According to Portland city spokesperson Jessica Grondin, it’s not at any of the city’s docks or moorings. Dionne, the Portland Discovery Land Sea and Tours deckhand, said it’s likely at Fore Points Marina, “a safe, deep harbor, specifically designed to host megayachts” that opened in 2019. Office Manager Lauren Whitney would neither confirm nor deny whether Rising Sun was on its docks. Its current coordinates, according to Marine Traffic, are in an area where there are no other marinas but Fore Points.

If so, Geffen would pay at least $3,624 a day for the dockage rate, according to the company’s website.

What say Geffen? Does he like coming to Portland? How long will he be here? How much is he spending on the ship? Is he spending any money in the Old Port? Where does he stand on the ongoing Hollywood writers and actors strike?

Who knows – a reporter tried but could not get in touch with him.

“This is not possible, he doesn’t take any calls,” said an unnamed receptionist at the David Geffen Foundation. “Thank you for trying.”

Hey Dale, . . . I took my nephew Macky Weathers (7yrs old) from Highland Park musky fishing up in the Eagle River/Three Lakes area over the weekend, and he landed a 36” Pike. We were trolling crankbaits and it hit right on a weed point. He did an amazing job battling and getting the fish to the boat for me to net! After releasing the pike and getting everything reset, we lost a nice musky that jumped a few times and threw the bait. It was an awesome fish! Thanks for the consideration Dale! I hope all is well with you! Mike

Jay Damm emailed the photos above and below, and this:

Hi Dale,I managed to get out to the Lemont Quarries today, and was not disappointed. The bluegill fishing was fantastic, with the action being almost nonstop from the first cast. It was rather challenging to get around, as the algae bloom made it difficult to row my personal pontoon boat through, so I had to navigate breaks in the vegetation to get to my preferred panfish spot in the quarries, “Bluegill Bay”. I was not disappointed, for from the first cast many hand-sized fish were nailing my Rocket (slip) bobber rig baited with live red worms on the drop. I do love fighting bluegill on ultra-light tackle, it feels like pulling in a sheet of plywood sideways. I could see and hear large surface “plops” all around me, apparently fish taking advantage of the abundant insect offerings, namely (but not exclusively) cicadas. Call it a cicada frenzy, call it post spawn, but it was a stellar bluegill day like none other at the quarries. Too many gills to count, all released.Tight lines,Jay

Weed growth is heavy on flats with lily pads filling in nicely. It’s the perfect conditions for kermit to catch some bass. I went 2 for 4 on blowups. With this weeks temps of 90 plus through next weekend, this bite will only continue to get better. Bass will be looking for shade and an easy meal. FINS Braids infinity braid in 50lb test was the perfect line to get those bass out of heavy cover. . . . TTYL Ken “Husker” O’Malley Husker Outdoors Waterwerks fishing team

Hi Dale I’m back from a whirlwind couple of days after heading to Merrill to cut the grass check the house and then on to Milwaukee for Zappa rehearsal. I had a little time to fish from shore in town where I launched for years with Bella. The weather was ominous and the river had the kind of swift current that makes for an almost non existent bite. Possibly from dams being open further down river. I reembarked on my quest to catch a musky on a senko. A kayak fly fisherman was at the launch and also was after musky. I dared not tell him of my follie. He pointed out an osprey nest on the baseball field lights. The rain storm was imminent as I headed back to the house. In island lake the bite for bass remained good as the hot sunny weather set in. Texas rigged neko worm and wacky rigged senko in baby bass and green pumpkin under dock a and in shade AR we s produced nice largies. Anglers Fly fishing for bluegill having success. On the music front I had a great time joining indika reggae band last Saturday on melodic and a little freestyle. Tonight I may bring the melodic to join Gizzae in Libertyville at independence Grove where we saw some huge bass hanging under the lakeside deck feeding on pan fish. It’s 3 weeks to go till the zappa shows. Midnight mile June 29 at Morgan’s in Libertyville. A and not last of all the conscious rockers at the Montrose beach dock this Saturday 7pm. Here we go! Tight lines and good health! Rob

Pete Lamar emailed:

Hi Dale, I’ve braved the heat a couple of times for some pretty average fishing. I wanted to try a cicada pattern before it becomes irrelevant in a couple of weeks and stuck with it to the point of stubbornness. I got into some big bluegills on a Kane County F. P. pond, but only a few. If I’d really wanted to match the hatch, a dragonfly pattern would’ve been much better. As for wildlife, the highlight was startling a mink near a footpath. He got back to the water in a hurry when he saw me. This is a forest preserve pond but there is a local homeowners association involved too. I bumped into a professional trapper earlier in the Spring the HOA had hired to remove excess muskrats. That probably accounts for the mink colonizing this place. In addition to the muskrats, the place is full of bullfrogs as well as rabbits in the native grasses nearby. It must seem like a Golden Corral to a mink. Pete

Eugene NeSmith had an early outing with his dad Gene that resulted in the Fish of the Week, but there was other fish than just walleye, as Eugene noted:

We caught a ton of fish and this 16in crappie he caught

Art Frisell at Triangle Sports and Marine in Antioch said catfish are excellent in 5-10 feet with crawlers, stinkbait or roaches; carp are good; walleye good around bridge areas or main lake points, leeches, large fatheads or crawlers with walleye rigs; crappie are fair toward evening on glow Custom jigs and small minnows; bluegill fair in 8-12, ice jigs waxies or spikes; seek white bass in 8-15 with Mepps spinners with a split shot.

DELAVAN LAKE, WISCONSIN

Arden Katz said bluegill were 13-15 feet deep on the drop-shotting jigabit jigs with maggots (some bonus walleye, too); but guys using trout worms did even better.

Capt. Dave Duwe emailed:

Delavan Lake 6/17/24 through 6/24/24 With the warm weather, I have been positioning myself on the deep weedlines in 20-25 ft of water. Due to the cold spring, the largemouth bass are a couple of weeks behind schedule, the bass are not very thick on the weedline yet. They are in the medium weeds between 8 and 10 ft of water. Northern pike fishing has been fantastic. If you can’t catch them now, you should quit fishing. The biggest pike are in 27 ft of water. The largest concentration of fish is between 18 and 22 ft of water. The best presentation has been lindy rigging suckers or using Thill slip bobbers about ½ way down the water column. Look for the fish by Browns Channel or by Willow Point. The key I have found is keeping your bait moving. I’ve been electric motor trolling almost exclusively. Largemouth bass have been a bit slow. I’ve been on the deep weedline. If you are targeting largemouth bass you need to be in and around the docks in 6-8 ft of water. You want to fish split shot rigged nightcrawlers or a black and blue All Terrain jig. The best location has been the North Shore from the Yacht Club down to Willow Point. The few weedline fish I’ve been catching have been over 5 lbs. I’ve been catching them by the Yacht Club or over by Browns Channel. In the next week or so, the bass will be schooled up and be very easy to catch. Bluegill fishing has also been fantastic. The fish are in 15-18 ft of water. Look for the fish just west of the Yacht Club or by Willow Point. I’ve been catching a lot of fish throughout the lake, location doesn’t seem to matter but the depth is crucial. Walleye Pike can be caught using two different methods. The first is trolling deep diving crank baits along the weedline in 18 ft of water. You want to use a crankbait in perch or crappie pattern. The second method is lindy rigging jumbo leeches right around the weedline also in 18 ft of water. Look for the fish by the Village Supper Club or by Browns Channel. The one key has been making sure you are fishing the windy side of the lake. Crappie fishing has been sporadic. They are suspended over deep water. The fish are concentrating on the pods of small bait fish. They can be caught on purple or chartreuse plastic with a 1/32 oz jig. Look for the fish just east of Willow Point or just west of the Yacht Club. Good luck and I hope to see you on the water. For guide parties, please call Dave Duwe at 262-728-8063.

Hey Dale, I wasn’t able to get out this week, but here’s a report and photo from Len Cajic: “The river is still at a high level. Tough to wade safely. The water is stained/dirty. The heat has made the fishing difficult. Finesse presentations have been key. Hairjig, ned rig, etc. Have been getting them on crankbaits also. Topwater works in the early morning or late evening. The smallmouth have been caught mostly in current seams, dam area, and close to shore in shade pockets / slack water.”

Blackberries along the Fox River system.

Pete Lamar emailed the photo above and this on Thursday:

Hi Dale, I fished the Fox last night before the extreme heat builds and possible upcoming rain muddies it up. Water was high but clear and cool-prime conditions. I got a few smallmouths, but I must be getting jaded by recent success: I didn’t bother to photograph a 16 inch fish. I was more interested in the blackberries ripening. Also, a bald eagle flew right over me. He circled mid-river briefly, then swooped down and picked off a fish and continued on his way. The turkey monitoring you wrote about today is a pretty cool program. I got into it last year after our conversations with Mr. Garver. I see turkeys occasionally during my wanderings on the Fox watershed in Kendall and western Kane County. You have great taste in comedic movies. Pete

I like my tastes in comedic movies, too. I also need to get serious about doing the turkey monitoring in my ramblings.

Then on Tuesday, he updated:

Hi Dale, . . . The Fox has returned to normal Summer levels, much lower than it was for the past week. It’s also as clear as I’ve seen it during the Summer. It was a great backdrop, but all I got were some small smallmouths. Water temps are rising quickly in the extreme heat, so it may be time to focus on oxygenated water near dams and fast water, or go back to the spring-fed tributaries. Pete
The hot weather has helped the catfish bite on the Fox River cut bait, suckers and stink bait.

GENEVA LAKE, WISCONSIN

Arden Katz said largemouth are being caught in 8-12 feet with a dropshot; pumpkinseed in the same 8-12 feet, they’re using on the bass beds.

Lake Geneva Fishing Reports 6/17/24 through 6/24/24 Lake Trout are biting in the main lake basin. Most of the fish are suspended off the bottom between 50 and 90 ft down in 115-130 ft of water. Most of the fish are caught at first light or right at dusk. With the longer days, you need to get up very early to get the best bite. Fish can be caught on nickel/green or nickel/blue spoons fished on down riggers. I’ve been trolling the spoons at 2 to 2 ½ mph. Smallmouth bass have finished spawning and have moved out on the break lines. The best depth has been 12-18 ft of water. They can be caught on nightcrawlers fished on a split shot rig or drop shotting small finesse worms. My best success has come by Linn Pier or by Belvidere Park in Fontana. I’ve caught a lot of post spawn females in excess of 20 inches in the past few weeks. The smallmouth bass bite this spring has been one of the best in the past 3 years. Rock bass remain everywhere on the lake. Lake Geneva is an awesome place to take a first time angler for a lot of action. The highest concentration of fish is from 10-12 ft of water. The bigger fish seem to be on the break line in 12-18 ft of water. My best location has been by Linn Pier by what is known as the duck hole. The best bait has been a split shot rigged nightcrawler. If you don’t want to spend a lot of money on live bait, white hair jigs have also been producing a lot of fish. Largemouth bass have not moved to deep water yet. They are still in the weed flats. My best location has been by Trinkes or in Geneva Bay by the boat launch. The bass can be caught on split shot rigged nightcrawlers, wacky rigged Senkos or split shot rigged green pumpkin lizards. My biggest fish this past week was 4.3 lbs. caught in Trinkes bay. The next couple of weeks should be some of the best largemouth bass fishing shallow that Geneva has to offer. Bluegills and Pumpkin Seeds have been sporadic. The biggest fish I’ve caught has been in Trinkes Bay in 12-13 ft of water. I’ve been catching the fish by accident on split shot rigged nightcrawlers. If you wanted to key on them, I would use leaf worms fished on a slip bobber while anchored. Some of the pumpkin seeds this past week were over 10 inches. Perch still remain in the shallow waters. They are on the hard bottom near points. On Saturday last week, the average size was very good. There was one keeper per five small ones, which is pretty good for Lake Geneva. I’ve been catching them on nightcrawlers pieces fished on a Thill slip bobber or a split shot rig. Good luck and I hope to see you on the water. For guide parties, please call Dave Duwe at 262-728-8063.

GREEN LAKE, WISCONSIN

fotw06-19-24largemouthZimmy.jpg

Brennan Zimmy, 15, from Geneva caught his personal-best largemouth bass of 20 1/2 inches Friday on Fox Lake with guide Mike Norris.

Mike Norris

Guide Mike Norris emailed the photo above and this:

Big Green Lake: Water clarity is extremely clear for this time of the year. Largemouth and smallmouth bass are post-spawn and have moved to deeper water. Work quarter-ounce tube jigs and drop shot rigs in 10 to 15 feet of water. The better areas are where gravel extends from shallow water to deep water. Try trolling spinner rigs over the top of the deeper weeds for walleye. Troll crankbaits for white bass are suspended near the Heidel Bar. You can find rock bass everywhere. I’m catching them with a drop shot and a red worm around cribs in 17 feet of water. Fox Lake: A bloom has formed on the surface due to the warmer lake temperatures. This allows largemouth bass to stay shallow. The dam separating the Fox Lake from the Beaver Dam Lake is open and creates a flow that flushes bait through the system. This results in excellent fishing for largemouth bass. The rocky points from Brushwood, Elmwood, and Dead Island are key fishing areas for bass. My lure of choice is a wacky worm, and I am casting them to the edge of the rocky points which come off the islands. Crappies are good out on the basin for those drifting with a split shot and minnow. Walleyes remain active in 10 to 15 feet of water off Maple Point. Troll spinners with a piece of crawler or vertically jig with plastics to catch them.

Sheephead are hitting when winds are north. Our hours are now 4am to 8pm 7 days a week. Have an awesome week.

Dan Edwards at Bridgeport Bait and Tackle said a buddy caught eight keepers at Montrose on opening day and another customer four behind McCormick Place Tuesday morning. The shop is having a free big perch contest (by weight) with a $100 first place prize and other prizes.

Capt. Bob Poteshman of Confusion Charters said out of North Point, good big coho in 40-100 from the state line to the hotel at Illinois Beach State Park. Out of Chicago, all along the lakefront in 55-75 is loaded with coho; best are Dodgers and flies (Stubbys and Aqua flies are a favorite).

Rob Wendel , proprietor of Lake Michigan Angler in Winthrop Harbor, said fishing was good for coho the last several days in 60-110 with baby Spin Doctors or Stubby dodgers and flies; a few more kings on wire divers and Dragonslayer flashers with Bullfrog flies; a few steelhead on the coho rigs.

Kurt Justice at Kurt’s Island Sport Shop in Minocqua emailed:

Heading into the first day of summer and it continues to be a wet, windy season so far. Lots of fronts moving through keeping anglers off the water or making it tough to stay with the winds we keep getting. Those able to wet some lines doing well with good reports from gamefish anglers. Musky: Good-Very Good – Keep in mind the “bite” window for these long fish is sometimes short. Some very nice fish over the past week, topping 50” have been boated. Bucktails over deep weedlines along big drops. Double bladed to push water and rubber baits were key. Muggy, warm evenings have been hot for top-water action. Smaller bucktails such as #500, #700 Buchertails and Wizards doing best in mornings over shallower weeds producing mid-30” to low-40” fish. Largemouth Bass: Good-Very Good – No reports of bedding to our knowledge, yet good reports of nice LMB in 6-10’ weeds on Wacky Worms, jig/creature, pre-rigged worms and top-water baits (evenings). Casting big weed flats with chatterbaits and spinnerbaits also effective. Smallmouth Bass: Good-Very Good – First move off the beds has been out in 8-14’ weeds. Ned rigs and Wacky Worms best. As waters warm up, we should see more movement out to rock bars. Walleye: Good – Signs of Mayfly (hexagenia) hatches moving up the water columns over the weekend and now actual reports of hatches reaching the surface has slowed those waters. Yet on waters not ready, nice fish being caught using redtails or full crawlers along coontail edges of 14-16’ on larger lakes. Lots of reports of protected “slot” fish and those larger being caught and released. Northern Pike: Good – Best on 4-5” swimbaits over cabbage flats of 6-12’. Nice averages of 25-30” fish with two over 36” this past weekend. Bluegills: Good – Lots of reports of staging Gills, lots of heavy egg laden fish in 6-9’ outside shallow spawning areas. Most on worms with floats on tiny jigs. Wind making small/light presentations tough. Yellow Perch: Good-Fair – Wind biggest factor as fishing pockets in shallow flats tough. Beavertails, medium fatheads or leeches under weighted floats best. No concentrations, but some very respectable (9-11”) fish scattered about. Crappies: Fair – As with other panfish, tough to sit on productive spots and use viable presentations. Live Crappie minnows or small tubes under weighted floats in 8-14’ narrow leaf cabbage best. More weather expected through this weekend, coming in small waves. The following week looks to get very summer-like with highs in the upper 70s to mid-80’s should get the summer patterns locked in. Mosquitos have been heavy, especially on the calm, humid spells. Out away from shore, no skeeters – just some flies. Kurt Justice Kurt’s Island Sports Shop – Like us on FaceBook

Merry Midsummer, my babies!

The longest day of the year is upon us, and with it, the call to worship the life-giving light of our favorite star.

The exact date and time of the solstices vary from year to year, but in 2024, the summer solstice falls on June 20 at 4:50 PM.

In technical terms, this solstice marks the beginning of summer, the onset of Cancer season, and the point in the year when the sun reaches its highest point in the sky, directly above the Tropic of Cancer.

Solstice  is a marriage of the Latin words for “sun” and “to stand still,” and the summer solstice equates to the longest day and briefest night of the year. Summer’s flannel-wrapped, wind-chapped, pine-high spirit sister, the winter solstice, is celebrated on or around December 21st and coincides with the longest night and shortest day of the year.

Revelers greet the sunrise on the summer solstice at Stonehenge.

Between the two, we observe the spring and autumn equinoxes, wherein sunlight and night are evenly distributed.

The summer solstice goes by many names, including Midsummer and Litha. Across cultures and since time immemorial, the longest day has been cause for pause and revelry.

To read more about the ancient celebration of the summer solstice, see our guide here .

For those looking to make merry in our increasingly joyless, ritual-starved modern world, read on for our recommendations on how to honor the sun and the shifting of seasons.

Maximize sun exposure

Young female legs walking towards the sunset on a dirt road

To vitalize yourself on the longest day of the year, spend as much of it as possible under the rays of the ever-loving sun. Feast al fresco, work outside, dig your hands in the earth, take a good long walk with bare feet, offer up your a–hole to the light , you do you.

Light it up

Exploring the wilderness in summer. A glowing camp fire at dusk providing comfort and light to appreciate nature, good times and the night sky full of stars. Photo composite.

Traditional pre-Christian pagan solstice celebrations included lighting and jumping over magnificent bonfires on Midsummer’s Eve. The fire was believed to purify observers and keep demons at bay, while the infernal leaping was thought to bring good luck to lovers.

Other pagan traditions included setting large wheels on fire and rolling them down a hill into a body of water.

According to historian Ronald Hutton , Professor of History at the University of Bristol, “[Midsummer was seen as] a time when the normal laws of nature or divinity could be suspended when spirits and fairies could contact humans when humans could exceed the usual limitations of their world.”

In this sense, we can view the solstice as a time to suspend the mundanity of modernity and engage with the world the way our ancestors did, with fire, nudity, danger, hope, and raucous reverence.

Whether you believe in the existence of love, luck, fairies, or demons, you can participate in the customs of old by building an outdoor fire. Invite a circle of friends to gather and share their wishes for future fruition.

Get real, get ripe.

Go for a swim

Black silhouette of asian woman splash water on summer vacation holiday relaxing in infinity swimming pool with blue sea sunset view. Healthy happiness lifestyle

While the fire of the sun is the star of the solstice, the other elements are equally deserving of our attention. In ancient Egypt, the summer solstice coincided with the flooding of the Nile River, a rising of tides that lasted from June to September and was synonymous with themes of fertility and resurrection. In Spain, revelers routinely opt for a midnight skinny dip in the sea to purify body and spirit.

Sun salutations

@wiredmysticalcreations 🌱🙏🏼💚 ♬ Wash. – Bon Iver

Many yoga practitioners honor the changing of the season, including the summer solstice, with a series of 108 Sun Salutations. This movement is typically done in a group with a singular offering, such as peace or personal power.

108 is a sacred number that represents the wholeness of existence. It is the number of names for both Buddha and Shiva and corresponds to the number of beads on a Tibetan mala and a Catholic rosary.

If 108 salutations sounds like too tall an order, you can practice as many or as few rounds of this sequence as you see fit.

Aerial view of people toasting together

Food is an offering of earth and effort, evidence of the power of the elements to bring us all that we need. On the longest day, you can honor the body by preparing a feast that incorporates seasonal ingredients like strawberries, greens, corn, grilled meats, peaches, and honey.

Pour a tall glass of something strong, sweet, or sparkling.

Gather around the ones you love and ride high on the sunshine and the simple joy of being alive beneath it, the past within you and the future bright before you.

Surfers tested the waves rolling in from the Atlantic. Kayakers drifted across the sparkling bay just to the west. Bicyclists pedaled past colorful wood-frame houses with names such as Ship Faced and Sand Dollar Retreat.

But even on this postcard-perfect day, a threat was lurking — one that is growing more disruptive, more often, in coastal communities in the southeastern United States:

Sea-level rise.

In a matter of hours, a particularly high tide would once again arrive in this town of nearly 7,000 , overwhelming its outdated and overmatched infrastructure. The main drag of Canal Drive would once again become submerged by floodwaters.

The Washington Post had set up cameras in multiple places along the road, capturing in real time the many ways that ever-higher tides exacerbate flooding, and why local efforts to cope with this growing scourge are often falling short in communities where seas are rising the fastest.

The videos illustrate how, even on days without major storms, rising waters are compromising stormwater infrastructure, overtopping shorelines, elevating groundwater, and combining with rain to make flooding more persistent and more insidious over time.

To capture the flood, the Post installed cameras in five locations.

The images add to growing evidence captured by scientists who, day after day, are documenting the frequency of these sunny-day floods in an area where sea levels have risen 7 inches since 2010 — among the highest in the country , according to a Post analysis.

In several coastal North Carolina communities, researchers have installed sensors inside stormwater drains and cameras along the streets above to record the causes and number of floods.

In Carolina Beach alone, they have documented 60 days over the past year when Canal Drive flooded, many of those during clear weather. That’s far more than the four to eight high-tide floods projected by the federal government for the same period, based on measurements from a nearby tide gauge.

Tide gauges designed to record changes in sea levels “are only painting part of the picture” of what is happening on land, said Katherine Anarde , an assistant professor of coastal engineering at North Carolina State University who is helping to lead the research.

She and her colleagues, working to decipher a fuller picture in specific places, keep arriving at the same conclusion.

“It is flooding more than we know,” she said.

Two days in Carolina Beach— the first clear and calm, the second marked by rain — show why fixing the deepening problems of sea rise poses such a daunting task.

A sunny late-August day in Carolina Beach. In the early afternoon, around low tide, Post journalists set up time-lapse cameras in several spots along Canal Drive to capture what happens as the evening high tide arrives.

2:45 p.m. — 7:15 p.m..

As the tide rolls in, a stormwater pipe at Seahorse Lane steadily becomes submerged by salt water.

The stormwater pipes and drains along this stretch of Carolina Beach were built generations ago, when they were above the high-tide line. But as this part of the southeast Atlantic coast experiences one of the most rapid sea-level surges on Earth, high tides regularly swallow the infrastructure that is supposed to drain city streets, leaving water nowhere to go.

“The higher tides are lingering more often. When we do have an event, it’s multiple days,” said Jeremy Hardison, planning and development director for Carolina Beach. “There’s definitely more water in the pipes and drains than there used to be.”

City officials have worked to combat the worsening problems, but it’s an uphill battle. They have installed backflow preventers to try to keep seawater from filling outflow pipes, though such retrofitting can have uneven results. The harsh coastal environment speeds wear and tear. Barnacles grow on the edges of valves, compromising their watertight seal.

“Water doesn’t need much to penetrate in,” Hardison said. “In some areas, it has helped; in some areas, it hasn’t performed as we thought it should.”

Local leaders also have mulled raising roads and building more bulkheads, he said. But such approaches can prove expensive, face regulatory hurdles and public skepticism, and come with the risk of unintended consequences.

On this day, seawater eventually fills a pipe near Seahorse Lane, causing water to spew from a drain 45 feet away onto Canal Drive.

6:40 p.m. — 7:30 p.m.

As rising seawater fills a stormwater drain, the excess quickly floods onto Canal Drive.

Besides overwhelming drainpipes, rising sea levels also push up underground water levels — commonly known as the water table.

“As the sea level gets higher and higher,” Anarde said, “the groundwater table also increases.”

That means there’s only so much capacity for the ground to absorb any rain that might fall. “So even just a minor rainfall event can lead to ponding in low-lying areas and just can exacerbate the flooding in the roadway or in yards,” she said.

As high tide approaches on this clear day, puddles of water appear from seemingly nowhere in certain spots along the street and at the base of a nearby power pole and stop sign.

As rising seas force groundwater to the surface, water starts to bubble up from cracks in the pavement.

The most obvious manifestation of rising seas is the higher tides that more easily send water creeping over shorelines.

That is what happens at this empty lot along Canal Drive — one of several places unprotected by a bulkhead.

5:15 p.m. — 7:50 p.m.

The incoming tide submerges a low-lying lot before spilling onto the main road. It pushes through marsh and across the once-dry land, turning it into a temporary pond. As sunset approaches, it continues to spill over onto the nearby street, covering it completely and making it impassable for many vehicles.

In a handful of hours, this combination of factors transforms a long stretch of Canal Drive into a canal. And most of that flooding arrives swiftly, overtaking the road in barely half an hour around high tide. As dusk arrives, the water is more than a foot deep in places, despite the clear, calm weather.

The city often must close the street to traffic on days with tides like this, said Hardison, the city planner. “It’s a given,” he said.

Police officers arrive to lower a series of gates the city installed several years ago that warn of the latest saltwater intrusion. “Road closed,” the signs read. “Saltwater flooding.”

A few drivers in trucks plow through anyway, sending ripples of water to lap off nearby carports and garage doors.

As sea levels continue to rise, Anarde says, these types of floods will happen during more high tides, linger longer and cause only more damage. “It’s just going to get worse,” she said.

By nightfall, the unstoppable tide stretches along Canal Drive and up side streets. Floodwaters creep up driveways and meander under some raised houses. Televisions flicker inside nearby homes, and the light from streetlamps dances across the water that has swallowed the road outside.

The remnants of Hurricane Idalia are barreling past the Carolinas. On this day, more than 3 inches of rain fall on Carolina Beach — not insignificant but also not an unheard-of amount for a storm along the coast. The day offers a firsthand lesson in how sea-level rise is making “compound” flooding more severe.

A steady rain settles in over Carolina Beach. “When it’s high tide and it rains, there’s nowhere for that water to go,” said Hardison, the city planner. “If there’s nowhere for that water to go, then it’s going to back up and fill up like a bathtub.”

3:30 p.m. — 6 p.m.

Stormwater pipes again fill up with seawater as high tide arrives, leaving no room for rainwater to drain.

Surging sea levels combined with even modest rains lead to what scientists call compound flooding , and it is happening more often in more places.

Pipes that once would have drained by gravity are now filled with salt water, leaving no escape for precipitation.

6:50 p.m. — 7:30 p.m.

“The system gets overwhelmed,” Anarde said of the rain that falls hard along Canal Drive. “As sea levels continue to rise and we see tides propagating higher and higher, plus the frequency of these rainfall events, we’re going to see more-frequent flooding for a lot of communities — even at moderate or lower tides.”

As darkness arrives, Canal Drive is once again submerged, this time even deeper than the day before. Authorities once again lower the gates to block the street. It will be hours before the floodwaters subside.

Over the past year, researchers have logged dozens more flooding events along Canal Drive than official estimates from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, whose scientists say high-tide floods in the South are already happening five times as often as just several decades ago.

Federal tide gauges “are not actually intended to measure flooding on land,” said Miyuki Hino , a University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill environmental social scientist.

It is a gap scientists are busy trying to better understand as this type of flooding worsens. “Measuring the floods correctly is a prerequisite for measuring the human impacts correctly,” said Hino, Anarde’s research partner.

As time goes on, and the trend continues — seas are predicted to rise as much as an additional foot along this stretch of coast by 2050 — these floods will force hard questions in coastal towns.

“Absent significant investments in adaptation, we’ll see a rapid increase in the incidence of chronic flooding relative to what we are seeing right now,” Hino said.

And definitely not just in Carolina Beach.

“A lot of coastal towns across North Carolina and across the U.S. are facing this problem,” Anarde said. “The last 10 years are not a good indicator of what the next 10 years will look like.”

How we reported the story

Over two days late last August, The Post set up cameras in various locations along Canal Drive in Carolina Beach to capture flooding during multiple high tides. Each camera took a photo every 10 seconds. The photos were combined in postproduction to create the time-lapse videos in this story.

The Post’s visit coincided with a “ king tide ” — a term commonly used to describe some of the highest predicted annual tides at a particular location. These events occur several times a year in many coastal areas, and offer an opportunity to see what average water levels might look like in the future as sea levels continue to rise.

Water levels measured in the Carolina Beach Yacht Basin

The approach to capturing the multiple drivers of flooding was informed by conversations with Katherine Anarde and Thomas Thelen at North Carolina State University, Miyuki Hino at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and Adam Gold of the Environmental Defense Fund. A paper they and other colleagues published in 2023 detailed how they used storm drain sensors and roadway cameras to determine that flooding in Beaufort, N.C., was happening more often than nearby tide gauge levels would have predicted.

Researchers continue to monitor the impacts and causes of such flooding in multiple communities in North Carolina, including in Carolina Beach, New Bern and Carteret County — part of an effort known as the Sunny Day Flooding Project .
