OKTO Yacht – Ultimate $50M Superyacht

She features exterior design by Vallicelli Yacht Design and interior design by the esteemed Italian designer Alberto Pinto.

The superyacht was delivered from the Italian Yacht builders ISA in 2014. The striking superyacht is the epitome of luxury and comfort and a popular charter superyacht.

OKTO yacht interior

The OKTO yacht was one of the last yachts to be designed by the esteemed luxury designer Alberto Pinto .

She features a chic and monochromatic style and onboard accommodation for 11 guests in 1 master suite, 1 VIP suite, three doubles, and a single.

The owner’s suite features a private balcony over the water. The interior features a striking mix of natural light through huge windows, pale furniture, lacquered surfaces, and stainless steel.

The helipad turns into a great socializing and party area at night, with a state-of-the-art stereo system and dance area.

There is a cinema and gym on the sundeck which provides magnificent views of the waters.

The yacht is designed for excellent flow between outdoor and indoor areas.

The pool is one of the most striking features of the OKTO, with a covered lounge and sun loungers. Guests can enjoy a dip in the jacuzzi.

Complimenting the luxury is a massage room that can be used as a beauty salon or therapy room. The yacht has four tender garages.

The interior is designed to be a perfect combination of functionality and design. 

Andrea Vallicelli of Valicelli Yacht Design designed the fluid and striking exterior of the OKTO yacht.

The exterior design feature a striking black hull with a piercing bow. The sleek superstructure supports the striking superstructure.

The OKTO was built by  ISA  and delivered in 2014. She was refitted in 2016 by  Amico & Co  and Rybovich Shipyards.

Specifications

The OKTO yacht is powered by 2 Caterpillar engines, with a cruising speed of 13 knots and a maximum speed of 18 knots. She has a range of 3000 nautical miles.

She has a volume of 1149 gross tons. She has a length of 66.4m, a beam of 10.5m, and a draft of 2.95m. She has an annual running cost of $5 million.

The 66M GT M/Y OKTO was launched in 2014 by ISA Yachts . A true game changer, OKTO has raised the bar in superyacht design and engineering. Fusing the upmost expertise, creativity and serenity, she exceeds all expectations.

OKTO is certainly a sight to behold. On top of her jet black steel hull with its piercing bow sits a sleek, sparkling superstructure and this striking profile is only the start of her appeal. A large pool for salt or fresh water on the main deck aft is bound to become the hub of any vacation while the bridge deck aft abounds with space for alfresco dining, lounging and socializing with fellow guests. A secluded sun deck, meanwhile, with a Jacuzzi and sunning options provides a more intimate escape.

One of the last projects the late designer Alberto Pinto worked on, OKTO boasts a harmonious continuity between inside and outdoors. On the main deck, five-metre-wide glass doors slide open into an opulent salon. Pale furniture, lacquered surfaces and stainless steel structural detail flow from one space to the next while natural light floods in through huge windows. Visually striking, the grand ambiance and extraordinary comfort of this space continues throughout the whole motor yacht.

Powered by 2 CAT engines, this 66M can reach 18 knots max and cruises at 16 knots. With 5 cabins plus the master, it accommodates 12 guests.

Motor Yacht

The ISA 66M GT M/Y Okto was launched in 2014 and delivered to her owner in 2015.

Developed from the 65m GT platform, this full displacement custom yacht is the first model of the newly launched GT range. It’s a 4-decks vessel with aluminium superstructure and steel hull which architectural structure is based on a strong contrast between the harmonious and curvaceous lines of the decks and the rigorous and diamond-like geometry of the transom and of the sundeck.

Powered by 2 CAT engines, this 66M designed by Andrea Vallicelli, can reach 18 knots max and cruises at 16 knots. With 5 cabin plus the master, it accommodates 12 guests.

The never before chartered 66m/217ft motor yacht OKTO is the most recent addition to the global charter fleet, and will be available for charter in the Mediterranean during the summer season before heading to the Caribbean for winter bookings.

The fully custom yacht OKTO was completed to an extremely high standard by BMT Nigel Gee with a spectacular interior designed by the world-renowned Alberto Pinto in 2014. She boasts unique combination of features that a limited number of yachts in the charter market have, including Zero Speed Stabilizer-enhanced performance, a foredeck helicopter pad and a private owner’s balcony.

Her cutting exterior blends effortlessly with her sleek and ultra-modern interior that exudes endless glitz and glamour in a spacious and well-designed layout for optimum comfort - the focal point being her unusual black and grey pinstriped decking.

OKTO offers accommodation for up to 11 guests in 6 individually styled and colour-coded cabins that ensure each guest has a unique and relaxing experience. Her spacious layout comprises of a master suite, a VIP stateroom, three double cabins and a single cabin.

A key feature is her exceptional full-beam private master suite which comprises of a private lobby and a private balcony, with fitted air curtain, controlled by the guest at a touch of button. Furthermore, suite offers his and hers bathrooms and vast dressing room fitted with glamorous floor-to-ceiling and wall-to-wall mirrors.

Built with high deck heads and negative angles that create an additional sense of space, the main deck interior room is wholly functional as the retractable doors extend the dining room to the aft deck for a vast hosting area where guests can relax and entertain.

Fitted with a guest elevator from lower to upper deck, cinema room, sky lounge and 6-metre contra flow swimming pool, OKTO allows her guests ample of privacy and freedom for a unique charter that is uncomplicated, tranquil and utterly sophisticated.

OKTO Yacht Charter

OKTO currently registered in the Cayman Islands is actively available for charter in several cruising destinations.

The luxury motor yacht OKTO, previously named GRANTURISMO, was built by ISA and delivered to her owner in 2014, she later underwent a refit in 2022.

The exterior of OKTO is designed by BMT Nigel Gee / ISA.

The 218ft / 66.4m OKTO has been constructed with a steel hull and is powered by 2 x Caterpillar 3512C, 2,366 Hp with a cruising speed of 13 knots and a top speed of 19 knots.

Charter guest accommodation

OKTO has been designed to comfortably accommodate up to 11 charter guests in 6 suites.

The guest cabins comprise a primary suite with a king size bed and en-suite bathroom facilities located on the deck, 3 cabins with a double bed and en-suite bathroom facilities, a VIP suite with a queen size bed and en-suite bathroom facilities and a cabin with a single bed and en-suite bathroom facilities.

Your luxury charter crew

Your luxury charter on board motor yacht OKTO will be managed by the crew of 16 including the captain.

The crew will ensure you have a relaxed and enjoyable charter experience with all of your needs catered for while on board.

The 16 crew have their own separate crew quarters located forward allowing guests to enjoy increased levels of privacy.

Graaeme Affleck / James Lovejoy

Graeme grew up in a small fishing village on the East Coast of Scotland. He was brought up on and around boats and was destined for a career at sea. He now lives on the south coast of England with his wife and two young boys. Graeme has been in the yachting industry for over 12 years and has a wealth of experience cruising worldwide on both private and charter yachts. He takes pride in providing the highest standard of service for the guests onboard, while not compromising safety. Graeme joined MY OKTO at the start of the 2022 Mediterranean season, after running a busy 55m charter yacht for the past two years. His door is always open to discuss cruising plans or pass on his knowledge of local restaurants and great locations to visit. He is a keen sports man who loves team sports and when time permits, he enjoys a round of golf or some time on the padel court. He loves being in and around the water and is a keen diver. He looks forward to welcoming you onboard.

Stuart Honeywell

Stuart was raised on the south coast of England, growing up, his father ran a sailing and windsurfing school in the summer on Studland beach and Poole harbour so he has been around the water for as long as he can remember, Stuart now lives on the South West coast of England with his wife.Having started his yachting career in 2008, Stuart has cruised worldwide on both private and charter programs and has sighted Alaska, Costa Rica & Norway as some of his favourite destinations as well as having a wealth of knowledge on the Mediterranean and Caribbean. After completing his Masters license in 2019, Stuart has gone on to Captain both very busy Private and charter programs.Stuart loves the teamwork aspect of yachting and that shows on MY OKTO he enjoys working closely and developing crew, the planning and execution of charter and building a close relationship with his owners.When not afloat, he enjoys surfing, hiking, watching Manchester United games, live music and working on his property investment business in the UK, he has an overall passion for the marine industry and is currently studying towards a Diploma in Naval Architecture.

Pete Grunow

Pete was raised in Durban, on the east coast of South Africa. He decided to enter the world of yachting after a short-lived corporate career and has never looked back. He has worked on yachts for over 10 years, progressing through the deck ranks before obtaining his Chief Mate’s qualification in August 2021. Pete is a sports fanatic and in his spare time can be found running and hiking the trails around his present hometown, Cape Town. He is considered to be the OKTO Braai (BBQ) master and reigning Padel champion.

Cameron Wilson

Cameron was raised in Cape Town,South Africa where he spent all his timeon the Atlantic and Indian Oceans, fishing, spearfishing, surfing and sailing. A career on the sea was a natural choice for Cameron joining the Yachting industry in 2010. Where he has worked on a variation of both Sail and Motor Yachts. Cameron joins the OKTO team as an established Chief Officer, who strives to deliver an unforgettable experience to all guest’s joining us, whether that be a relaxing holiday or action-packed adventure. In his spare time you will catch Cameron seeking out the best golf courses or on a 4x4 adventure with his family in tow.

Sophie Morgan

Sophie grew up in London before moving to the south coast of England to a county called Dorset, here she spent time fishing for mackerel and cruising around the coastline in a small tender with her three older brothers. Sophie has several Atlantic crossings under her belt and has covered the Pacific Ocean, Mediterranean, Caribbean Sea and East Coast. Sophie has worked hard throughout her career, studying for her OOW and in 2022 her hard work paid off with her gaining the ticket and being promoted to 2nd Officer.

Tehan comes from a beautiful coastal stretch in South Africa known as the Garden route. He has a natural love for the ocean and spends most of his time on the water. Tehan enjoys interacting with guests on OKTO and showing his passion for the watersports toys and activites on board. His great personal skills and sense of humour are what Tehan prides himself on. He embraces each day and strives to provide the best on deck experience as he climbs the ladder and works towards gaining his officer tickets .

Lewis Barker

Lewis got his first break into the yachting industry on board MY OKTO He joins us from Ipswich, a countryside town in Suffolk. Lewis enjoyed growing up with his brother and sister in the countryside always exploring together, trying to keep out of trouble. Lewis has a passion for basketball, going to the prestigious Ipswich basketball academy and playing into his university years. Here he spent 5 years on a degree in strength, conditioning and personal training. He enjoys putting his knowledge into practice and is ready to tailor a programme to your needs.

Jean Maritz

Jean grew up in Durban South Africa coming from a very sporty family. He is an avid fisherman and loves spending time in and around the water. Sailing all over the world has been a thrilling experience for him as he has cruised the Mediterranean and Caribbean Seas and hopes one day to add the Indian Ocean to the list. As a deckhand onboard OKTO Jean is looking forward to giving you an experience you will never forget through their wide range of water toys and days filled of adventures.

Aly Nielsen

Meet Aly, a passionate adventurer from the beautiful Hibiscus Coast in New Zealand. With a lifetime of adventure both in and around the water, she developed a strong love of travel and exploring the world. As an experienced yachting professional with 12 years in the industry, Aly’s impeccable service skills are second to none. She adores welcoming guests onboard MY OKTO and providing a seamless, luxurious experience. Thanks to her love for exploring and being on boats, yachting became the perfect opportunity to turn her passion into a thrilling career. Join Aly and her team for an unforgettable voyage.

Alice Johnson

Meet Alice, born and raised on the coast of Melbourne, Australia. Alice comes from a background of being on the water with a family of sailors. Through this it was how Alice discovered the yachting industry and landed her first position in yachting cruising South East Asia and the Pacific for her first three years. Alice thrives on leading the Interior team and is excited to bring her wealth of knowledge to MY OKTO, guiding her department to deliver seam- less, luxury service in true OKTO style. In her free time, you can find Alice staying active and outdoors, travelling to off the beaten track countries, often to get below the sea level scuba diving

Tannah Metzler

Growing up in sunny South Africa, Tannah enjoys anything from a good book, to hiking, to exploring beautiful places. She has a special love for the ocean and outdoors. Tannah completed her degree in Clothing Consumer Science and worked in the fashion industry prior to joining MY OKTO. Tannah is passionate about High End fashion and in her free time enjoys sewing and growing her knowledge in sustainable fashion.

Tate Long Lines

Meet Tate, she is a city girl who then moved to the beautiful Cape Town, South Africa. She studied at a culinary school in the wineries of Stellenbosch and became a qualified pastry chef. Soon after Tate realised yachting was her next step and she dived into it with an open mind and soon fell in love with it. Her creative side from cheffing has allowed her to take on being a stewardess with all the detailed orientated and creative aspects that come with the job. Tate would like to progress in the industry and soon take on some courses to better her skills and knowledge in interior

Bella Thompson

Meet Bella, she is joining the OKTO Interior team in the 2nd year of her career. Bella’s hometown is Durban, South Africa. She comes from a Big Greek family where they spent their summers in beautiful St Francis. Bella is the proud Aunty of two mischievous nephews and a beautiful niece, she describes her family as loud, loving and outgoing. Naturally she fits right into the fun-loving crew/family we have onboard. In her spare time she loves hiking, yoga, reading and photography which she hoping to incorporate this into her working day.

Emma is our most recent to join the MY OKTO team, securing her first full time stewardess position. Emma grew up in Central Drakensberg and considers herself very privileged to call Champagne Sports Resort, a resort her parents managed, home for 25 years. Emma likes to keep fit and prides herself by having 2 half marathons under her belt. She also enjoys swimming, reading, and dancing. Emma is excited to start her yachting career and hope to one day become a Purser.

MY OKTO welcomes Chef Fabian, with over 25 years of experience in professional kitchens worldwide. Fabian, a co-founder of the famed Zurich restaurant Maison Manesse, was awarded a Michelin Star at the age of 30.Fabian is an avid spear fisherman who loves nothing more than catching fresh fish and sharing it with his guests or friends alike. In his downtime, you can find him anywhere between freediving the depths of the seas or hanging from cliffs. “May the fork be with you” - Fabian

Owen Nyakudya

Owen started his career in Africa where he worked in 2 restaurants ranked 22nd and 56th best in the world. During this time Owen grew into his own personal style of intuitive and creative cooking as he worked closely with farmers, fishmongers and foraging around Cape Town. In his free time Owen enjoys creating digital content, sand-boarding, snowboarding and keeps fit by mastering the skill of Calisthenics.

Dylan Harbin

Dylan was born in Geneva, Switzerland but grew up in England where he developed a keen interest in all things mechanical and electrical. Prior to joining the industry Dylan completed a degree in mechanical engineering. He is now in his thirteenth year as a yacht engineer seven of those years spent onboard MY OKTO. Outside of work Dylan is very keen on rugby, diving, skiing, traveling photography and horology. He too enjoys hitting the paddle court and is always on the search for the best restaurants in town.

Ben joined OKTO as 2nd Engineer in 2023. With 11 years of experience under his belt he was the natural choice for the promotion to Chief Engineer when it became available. He has passion for everything related to marine engineering and is dedicated to ensuring that the yacht’s mechanical systems are functioning at their best. Outside of work, Ben enjoys mountain biking, cars, and spending time with his family, especially his growing young son who at the age of 2 keeps him on his toes. Ben is an adventurous person who enjoys seeking out new locations and pushing himself to the limit!

Vasi has spent the last 5 years in the large yacht sector and prior to his yachting career he lived in Australia for 12 years, working in the mobile telecommunications industry. Since joining yachting he has specialized in working with various high-tech technical systems. Engineering runs in the family with his sister also working in the superyacht sector as a Chief Engineer. In his free time, Vasi enjoys cycling, diving, snowboarding, and travelling.

Jake Napoli

Jake has never been far from the sea, growing up in the coastal town of Portree in the Isle of Skye, he enjoyed exploring the rugged coastline and Jurassic landscape with his 3 sisters. Jake has tried a few different career paths such as training for 4 years and becoming a qualified Plumber, working for an Oil and Gas company, dipping his toe into Construction, on to Commercial Shipping and landing in the Yachting industry where he feels most fitted in the Engineering department. Jake is continuing to up his skills and is currently working towards his Chief Engineers License

Dan Stanton

Dan is the newest member of the engineering team. A seasoned aircraft engineer from the Royal Navy with a year in the yachting industry under his belt, he is eager to put his technical skills and Navy-honed work ethic into practice. His background emphasizes attention to detail, high standards, and effective teamwork. Professionally groomed through Navy experiences, he is ready to elevate the vessel’s engineering performance. His self-confessed career highlight to date? Raising the flag at the 2022 Commonwealth Games. Beyond the engine room, he enjoys photography, cars, watches, and the occasional round of golf.

OKTO welcomes up to 10 guests in five lavish staterooms. Her full-beam owner’s suite is private with its own lobby and fold-out balcony — found to starboard and guest controlled with the simple touch of a button — which offers an air curtain to ensure indoor climate control despite the open-air atmosphere. Additionally, this deck features a single-bed staff cabin, ideal for nannies, teachers or other non-crewmember staff, and a dedicated massage room, which also can be utilized as a beauty salon or therapy room. A masseuse or beautician can be brought aboard by special request.

The yacht’s interior spaces offer a striking design aesthetic, while also providing total functionality and comfort. The main salon’s custom high deck heads (measuring in at 2.2 meters) and use of negative angles create a unique volume and unmistakable energy. The open layout flows beautifully from salon to formal dining aft to the fully retractable circular doors, which open to the main deck aft, creating even more space for entertaining and onboard living. The yacht’s skylounge is well suited for relaxing after a day of fun with its 103-inch Panasonic 3D plasma TV. It is easily converted into a cinema with a popcorn machine. Motor yacht crew face criminal charges over Greek island fire allegedly started by firework display

ATHENS, Greece (AP) — A Greek prosecutor on Sunday brought criminal charges against the captain and crew of a chartered yacht suspected of triggering a forest fire on a resort island in the Aegean Sea during a firework display.

Greece has been plagued in recent days by scores of wildfires amid hot, dry and windy weather. On the day of the blaze authorities had warned of a maximum fire risk in several areas, appealing to the public for extreme caution.

The blaze on a remote stretch of coastline on the popular island of Hydra, 40 nautical miles (46 miles) south of Athens, destroyed about 75 acres of pine forest late Friday.

The crew of the large motor yacht, which had allegedly been anchored just off where the fire started with 17 tourists on board, were arrested Saturday when they docked near Athens. The tourists were not detained or charged.

State-run ERT television said the captain of another yacht anchored nearby told authorities that the blaze was started by fireworks let off by from the suspects’ vessel on Friday evening.

A prosecutor in the port of Piraeus, which serves Athens, on Sunday ordered the 13 suspects to be held in custody pending their appearance before an investigating judge.

ERT said they were charged under stricter legislation adopted recently and would face sentences of 10-20 years in prison if convicted.

Greece suffers every summer from destructive wildfires that have drastically reduced its forest cover, caused scores of deaths, and burnt homes and property.

Authorities warned of a particularly high risk this summer following a warm, dry winter that has left vegetation tinder-dry.

The fire service said Sunday evening that 41 wildfires broke out all over the country in the past 24 hours.

The blaze on Hydra was extinguished after several hours by firefighters brought by boat to the spot, which is uninhabited and not easily accessible by land.

Paramount Global ‘s trio of co-CEOs provided an update Tuesday at a town hall for the company’s more than 20,000 employees on where things stand with their plan to cut costs, boost revenue and pare down debt after a potential merger with Skydance was called off.

The three execs — George Cheeks , president and CEO of CBS; Chris McCarthy , president and CEO, Showtime/MTV Entertainment Studios and Paramount Media Networks; and Brian Robbins , president and CEO of Paramount Pictures and Nickelodeon — were installed as co-CEOs after Bob Bakish’s dismissal in late April.

As the trio of execs previously disclosed, Cheeks said the Paramount leaders are “looking at selling certain Paramount-owned assets” and said, “in fact, we’ve already hired bankers to assist us in this process — and we’ll use the proceeds to help pay down debt and strengthen our balance sheet.” He didn’t itemize which Paramount Global assets may be on the block, but those could include BET Media, the VidCon creator tradeshow division and the Paramount Pictures lot.

The town hall meeting had originally been set for June 5 but the co-CEOs rescheduled it for June 25, citing “ongoing speculation regarding potential M&A.” On June 11, Shari Redstone, Paramount Global’s controlling shareholder, ended talks about merging the company with David Ellison’s Skydance Media .

At this point, Redstone may still be looking to sell her stake in National Amusements Inc., which owns 77% of the voting shares in Paramount. Parties that have come forward to express interest in a deal for NAI have included ex-Warner Music and Seagram boss Edgar Bronfman Jr. together with Bain Capital as well as producer and filmmaker Steven Paul.

At the beginning of the town hall, Robbins spoke about the ongoing M&A chatter. “We’d like to take a moment to acknowledge the challenges of all the M&A speculation surrounding our company. We know what a difficult and disruptive period it has been,” Robbins said. “And while we cannot say that the noise will disappear, we are here today to lay out a go-forward plan that can set us up for success no matter what path the company chooses to go down.”

The co-CEOs addressed the fact that Paramount’s overall revenue grew by 13% between 2018-23 while adjusted operating income declined 61% over that period. “Let me be clear… a 61% decline in profits is simply unacceptable,” McCarthy told employees. “We need to act now to reverse this trend.”

Another key pillar of the three execs’ strategy is to boost the profitability of its Paramount+ streaming business to make up for linear declines. McCarthy told staffers that on the international front, “we are advancing talks with potential partners that will significantly transform the scale and economics of the service making it profitable and driving long-term value. This approach could also serve as a model for the U.S.”

In recent months, Paramount has discussed merging Paramount+ with NBCUniversal’s Peacock in some way. The two companies are already joint-venture partners in the European streaming service SkyShowtime.

At the June 4 shareholders meeting, Cheeks, Robbins and McCarthy provided an outline of their go-it-alone strategy . The expected job cuts will result in a “leaner and more nimble” company, Cheeks said, adding that layoffs will target “duplicative teams and functions across the organization, real estate, marketing and other corporate overhead categories.”

Tuesday’s town hall at the Paramount Theatre drew a crowd of some 500 employees, with several thousand more watching via livestream. The co-CEOs spoke for about an hour, including a Q&A session during which they fielded questions from staff after their prepared remarks.

On June 10,  Paramount extended change-in-control severance benefits to Cheeks, McCarthy and Robbins  that kick in if the company transacts a sale or merger, guaranteeing each of them severance packages of two times their annual salary plus target bonus, among other perks. The company also will grant them cash bonuses for the time during which they serve as co-CEOs.

Jeff Bezos and Lauren Sánchez are taking Greece by land, sea and air.

An isle spy tells Page Six that the power couple has been seen on Mykonos, where helicopter pilot Sánchez was spotted taking a whirly-bird for a spin off the duo’s boat, which is filled with “toys,” y’know, like choppers.

Said the fellow traveler: “Jeff was seen coming from the city center in Chora ” — as the tony town is called by locals and in-the-know visitors — “and getting on and off his helicopter onto his smaller support boat.”

The couple was also photographed strolling through the streets of Mykonos hand-in-hand.

The source further said that, “Lauren has been seen flying a helicopter on and off their support boat, where they keep all their toys . . . helicopters, speed boats and other water toys.”

The source also told us that, “Jeff’s keeping the super big boat they live on, on the other side of the island where there is less wind.”

The source was referring to the couple’s famous $500 million superyacht , Koru, which they debuted last summer. Building of the mammoth vessel for the Amazon tycoon began in 2018.

Bezos also reportedly owns a “smaller” $75 million yacht, Abeona, which shadows his bigger boat . (One boat blog explained the concept: “In car terms, this is basically the same as buying a Porsche so you can drive to the garage where your Bugatti is parked.”)

The little ol’ support boat can accommodate 45, including 20 crew.

An attack in Dagestan rekindled Russian fears of terrorism.

Attack revived terrorism fears in Russia

At least 20 people were killed on Sunday in a seemingly coordinated assault in the Dagestan region of southern Russia, the deadliest attack in the area in 14 years.

The Russian authorities have designated the assault an act of terror, but it was not immediately clear who was responsible. Gunmen targeted a police station as well as synagogues and Orthodox churches. Fifteen of the victims were police officers. One was an Orthodox priest, who was killed in his church. It is not known whether the attackers were specifically targeting members of law enforcement.

Five attackers were eventually killed by security forces, officials said.

The attack was reminiscent of the intense violence that gripped the Northern Caucasus, a predominantly Muslim region, in the late 1990s and early 2000s. That bloodshed was caused by a combination of Islamic fundamentalism and organized crime. Suppressing it became one of the central bragging points for the Russian president, Vladimir Putin, after he came to power in 1999.

That legacy is now at risk of being undermined by a resurgence of violence . In March, four gunmen killed 145 people at a concert hall near Moscow. The Islamic State claimed responsibility for that attack.

Analysis: The assault on Sunday has put a spotlight on the challenges that Russia faces as the war in Ukraine taxes its economy and security apparatus.

Israel said its military focus might shift to Hezbollah

Recent remarks by Israel’s prime minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, and its defense minister, Yoav Gallant, suggest that the country may soon mount fewer operations in the Gaza Strip and shift its focus to Hezbollah in Lebanon.

In an interview on Sunday, Netanyahu said that after drawing down troops in Gaza, “we will be able to move part of our forces to the north.” But Netanyahu stopped well short of announcing an invasion of Lebanon, a move that would most likely result in heavy losses for both sides, and left room for a diplomatic resolution with Hezbollah.

Gallant was in Washington yesterday talking to the C.I.A. director and other U.S. officials about Hezbollah and the war in Gaza as the U.S. tries to head off Israel’s military push in Lebanon .

In Gaza City: A senior official in charge of coordinating ambulance services in the Gaza Strip was killed by an Israeli strike , the enclave’s health ministry said.

Courts: A lawsuit filed in New York accuses senior officials at the U.N. aid agency for Palestinians of knowing that Hamas siphoned off $1 billion in aid money. The case faces high legal hurdles.

Officials said that most of the dead had not been registered for the hajj. Pilgrims with permits are transported in air-conditioned buses and can rest in cooling tents, while those without permits are left with little protection against temperatures that can reach 120 degrees Fahrenheit.

The Saudi government has tried to rein in the effects of the heat by increasing shade and misting pilgrims with cool water. But many relatives of the dead and missing complained that the authorities had not done enough to cool all the pilgrims. It’s unclear if the number of deaths this year is higher than in previous years because Saudi Arabia doesn’t regularly release those statistics.

A reporter learns his father’s past.

My colleague Edward Wong, who worked in China as a correspondent and later as the Beijing bureau chief for The Times, knew that his father served in China’s army. But it wasn’t until he was researching his new book, “At the Edge of Empire: A Family’s Reckoning With China,” that Ed uncovered the full story.

Yook Kearn Wong, Ed’s father, was stationed in Xinjiang, a region in China’s northwest, in 1952. There he would take part in efforts that laid the groundwork for China to rule over that area. Later, after he survived famine, he knew he had to escape China. He reached the U.S. in 1967.

“I marvel,” Ed writes, “at the ways my family’s story has looped like a Möbius strip around multiple generations and around the history of China.”
