St. Petersburg woman presumed dead, husband and son hurt after boat fire in Florida Keys

A 51-year-old St. Petersburg woman is missing and presumed dead, and her husband and son are hospitalized after a fire that destroyed the yacht they were on early Wednesday morning in the Florida Keys, according to the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office.
The St. Petersburg family was on the approximately 70-foot Viking yacht with a family of four when it caught fire around 12:10 a.m. at the Perry Hotel & Marina Key West on Stock Island, the agency said in a Facebook post .
A second Facebook post identified the woman as Linda Vella, along with her husband, Michael Kenneth Robson, 58, and son Anthony Joseph Vella, 21. They were visiting the Florida Keys for the lobster mini-season.
The yacht was fully engulfed in flames when Monroe County Fire Rescue crews got to the scene, the Sheriff’s Office said. It took about three hours to extinguish the fire.
Michael Robson and Anthony Vella were airlifted to Ryder Trauma Center in Miami for treatment of their injuries, the Sheriff’s Office said. No one in the other family was injured.
Linda Vella’s husband and son went back into the burning boat to help her after she returned to the vessel to rescue a dog onboard, Monroe County Fire Chief Jim Callahan said. The dog remains missing.
Both men were burned severely on their hands and feet, Callahan said.
The boat sank, creating what the Sheriff’s Office called “hazardous conditions” that are complicating the search for the missing woman. Crews from the Sheriff’s Office Dive Team and TowBoat U.S. are assisting.
Brooklyn and Lisamarie Vella identified Linda Vella as their mother in separate online posts.
Lisamarie Vella linked to a GoFundMe page honoring her mother’s memory on an Instagram story showing the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office’s initial post .
On the GoFundMe page, Lisamarie Vella wrote, in part, “I woke up to a night mare I have no words I can’t even put myself together. Unfortunately a tragedy happened and my parents boat blew up in flames. My brother and dad are in critical condition in Miami burn center as for my mom and her dog they didn’t make it off the boat.”
“Such a beautiful soul, the best mother and even greater friend!” one post from Brooklyn Vella says.

“Dozer was here best friend,” the post continues. “she loved that damn dog so much I believe she sacrificed herself to try and save him.”

British tourists dead after boat fire in Egypt’s Red Sea
Egyptian authorities say an electrical short circuit sparked a blaze on a scuba diving boat carrying 15 tourists and 12 crew members near Marsa Alam.
Three British nationals have been declared dead after a scuba diving boat they were on caught fire off Egypt’s Red Sea coastline.
On Monday, British tour operator Scuba Travel released a statement in which they said they “must accept that three of our much-valued dive guests … perished in the tragic incident,” when the Hurricane scuba diving boat went up in flames off the Red Sea resort town of Marsa Alam.
In a short statement a day before, Egypt’s Red Sea Governorate said 12 crew members and 12 British tourists were rescued and a search party had been launched to find the remaining three, whose identities were not revealed.
Following an initial examination of the vessel, Egyptian authorities said: “An electrical short circuit in the boat’s engine room sparked the blaze”.
The boat was on a six-day cruise and due back on Sunday when the blaze broke out while it was about 25km (16 miles) north of Marsa Alam.
Britain’s Foreign Office said it was in contact with the Egyptian authorities and is “supporting the British nationals involved”.
Uncommon in Egypt
Images posted on social media showed a white motor yacht with the same name on fire at sea, with thick smoke billowing into the sky.
“We saw smoke from the boat, it was around 9km [6 miles] from the beach,” said Ahmed Maher, a diving manager in Marsa Shagra village. “A nearby boat rescued them and dropped them off.”
Fatal boat accidents are uncommon in Egypt. In 2021, a boat capsized in a lake near Egypt’s Mediterranean city of Alexandria, leaving at least five people dead, including three children.
In 1991, an Egyptian ferry named Salem Express – sailing from Saudi Arabia to Egypt – sank, killing as many as 471 people, mostly Muslim pilgrims.
Egypt’s Red Sea resorts harbour some of the country’s most renowned beach destinations and are popular with European holiday goers. The area has cemented its reputation as a dive destination with easy access to coral reefs from shores and dive sites offering diverse marine life.
In recent years, Egypt has gone to great lengths to bolster its tourism industry, hurt by years of political instability, COVID-19, and the negative economic effect of the war in Ukraine.
Egypt’s tourism sector employs two million people and generates more than 10 percent of the country’s gross domestic product.
On Thursday, a Russian tourist was killed by a shark in the waters off the Egyptian Red Sea city of Hurghada.

Luxury yacht engulfed in ball of flames off Spanish coast
Share this with
This is the dramatic moment a luxury yacht caught fire off the Spanish island of Formentera.
Footage showed the 88-foot vessel engulfed in flames, with plumes of thick, black smoke billowing into the sky.
The Italian-designed cruiser was anchored off the beach of Es Cavall d’En Borràs in the Ses Salines Natural Park near where Hollywood A-lister Leonardo DiCaprio has been spotted partying in recent days.
Five crew members and 12 passengers scrambled to abandon the vessel in a race against the time.
Only one of the crew members, a 39-year-old Spaniard, suffered minor burns and needed hospital treatment, the regional emergency response coordinators said.
Onlookers gathered nearby in their own boats to watch the fire.
Flames could be seen spreading throughout the yacht in just a matter ofminutes, turning it into a fireball.
Local media reported that the vessel belonged to professional poker player Diego Gomez Gonzalez, aka ‘The Lion’, but this has not been confirmed by authorities.
It was not immediately clear this morning if the people on board were tourists who had chartered the yacht or guests of the owner.
Their nationalities have also not yet been made public either.
The alarm was sounded around 6pm on Saturday, with Spanish coastguards sent to the scene.
The yacht was towed further out to sea where the fire was put out.

Cargo boat fire that killed 2 firefighters put out after 6 days
The cause of the blaze is still under investigation.
The massive fire aboard a cargo ship filled with cars that took the lives of two Newark firefighters was put out after nearly a week of burning, the U.S. Coast Guard said Tuesday morning.
Investigators said they will now begin investigating the cause of the blaze on the Italian freighter Grande Costa D'Avorio. The vessel will then be broken down for scrap.
"The salvage process could easily be one to two months," Coast Guard Capt. Zeita Merchant said during a news conference.
The most recent tests of the air and water around the ship's berth indicated they were safe, said Kevin Perry of Gallagher Marine Systems, the company that was hired by the ship's owner, Grimaldi Group, to extinguish the fire and conduct salvage operations.
Firefighters were dispatched to the Port Newark Container Terminal on July 5 at around 9:30 p.m. ET after receiving a report about multiple vehicles on fire aboard the ship.
MORE: Unanswered questions remain after New Jersey firefighters killed in raging blaze on European-made cargo ship
The freighter was carrying used cars destined for Africa with a stop in Providence, Rhode Island, in between, according to the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey.
"The decks of the ship is essentially a parking garage," Port Director Beth Rooney said. "What we had burning were components and parts of cars."
Firefighters managed to extinguish the main body of the blaze but the flames had extended to multiple levels of the vessel.
At 10:25 p.m. ET the firefighters called a "Mayday" after two firefighters were trapped inside the ship followed by a second "Mayday" call 15 minutes later, city officials said.
Two Newark firefighters, Augusta Acabou, 45, and Wayne Brooks, 49, were pulled out and later died at the hospital.
Acabou served in the Newark Fire Division for 9 1/2 years and was assigned to Engine 16, Tour 1, according to city officials. Brooks was a veteran of the fire department for 16 1/2 years and was assigned to Ladder 4, Tour 1.
The last time a Newark firefighter was killed on the job was in 2007.
MORE: 2 firefighters die while battling blaze aboard ship in New Jersey
Five other firefighters were injured in the blaze, officials said.
One of the issues encountered by the firefighters was that their two-and-a-half-inch fire hose lines weren't compatible with the boat's one-inch connections, a source close to the investigation told ABC News on Thursday .
Instead, the firefighters were forced to use the fire hoses on the ship, which output less water and pressure than they were used to, the source said.
The New Jersey firefighters also weren't trained to handle blazes that take place on cargo boats, the source said.

Cause Sought in Miami Yacht Fire
Investigators continue to seek a cause to the Miami yacht fire that blazed in the early morning earlier this week.
An early morning fire on board a yacht at Haulover Park Marina destroyed a yacht and caused concern for nearby vessels, according to multiple media reports .
According to Miami-Dade fire rescue, the incident at the northeast Miami marina began at around 4:45am on Saturday. By the time various news outlets arrived later that morning, crews were working to extinguish a blaze that ballooned plumes of black smoke into the air.
Few details were given about the 60-foot yacht in media reports. No injuries were reported. Fire-and-rescue authorities expressed concern about the fuel on board and surrounding vessels.
“Scary, shocking,” a marina patron who identified himself as Glenn said to news out let WSVN. “You know, you do everything that you can do to try to make your vessel near perfect and safe, and then you see something like this, and it’s just – it shocks you.”
Other witnesses were surprised at how quickly it happened.
“I got the call this morning at 7 a.m. this morning to look out for my fire extinguisher being missing because there is a boat on fire on my dock,” Phil Gillen, who keeps a boat at the marina, told Local 10 News. “Just unbelievable how it’s completely leveled off and there’s no more boat left anymore.”
While the cause of this fire has not yet been determined, lithium ion batteries are often the culprit, even leading to new industry standards .

Three missing British passengers who were on a diving boat that caught fire in Egypt have died, a tour operator has confirmed.
A spokesman for Scuba Travel said: "It is with great regret that we, as tour operator, with heavy hearts, must accept that three of our much-valued dive guests, perished in the tragic incident.
"Our sincere and heartfelt condolences go out to their families and friends at this very sad time."
In a statement, the company said the three passengers were among 15 qualified diving enthusiasts who were on a week's stay on board the "Hurricane" dive boat when the fire broke out at around 8:30am local time (6:30am UK time) on Sunday.
A search had been under way for the three divers following the fire which broke out while the boat was off the Elphinstone Reef in the Red Sea.
"At the time the fire broke out, 12 divers were participating in a briefing on board, while those missing had apparently decided not to dive that morning."

According to Scuba Travel, the severity of the fire meant that 12 of the divers were immediately evacuated to another craft nearby and the 14 crew members also had to abandon ship after trying to reach the missing guests.
All the 12 guests who were taken off the dive ship went ashore to Marsa Shagra where they were provided with any medical attention required and gave statements to the local police.

A full investigation into the cause of the fire will be carried out by police and local authorities.
Authorities said initial reports suggested the fire was due to an electrical fault.
The "Hurricane" is being towed to a yet to be decided port as it is still smouldering and will need to cool down before entry.
It is understood that the Foreign and Commonwealth Department has contacted the families of the divers who died.

‘Nothing left’: After California Yacht Club fire, residents mourn loss of a beloved spot
- Copy Link URL Copied!
In an instant, an overnight seaside blaze engulfed decades’ worth of boating trophies, historical artifacts and cherished memorabilia at the California Yacht Club in Marina del Rey on Monday.
Fire crews attempted to control the blaze as heavy smoke and flames consumed the two-story building. By the time they had subdued the fire two hours later, only the skeletal remnants of the clubhouse were left standing.
John Myers, senior vice president of the club, said the blaze had been reported by an employee working late in the clubhouse Monday night. The fire spared the remainder of the facilities on the ground, including the docks and the yachts moored there. But the clubhouse, and particularly its second floor, was all but wiped out.
“We are working closely with the Los Angeles County Fire Department in their investigation of the cause of the incident and will share those findings when they become available to us,” Myers said.
Members are left mourning, comparing the loss to the death of a loved one.
Jennifer Dakoske Koslu awoke in Rancho Mirage at 5:30 a.m. Tuesday, before the sun had risen, to find her phone inundated with text messages from club members.
The first message she read simply stated, “The CYC is gone.”
“As soon as I opened my phone, it went to a link on the Citizen app and saw a video of the club burning. I was shocked,” Dakoske Koslu said.
For the last 24 years, Dakoske Koslu and her family have been dedicated members of the CYC, whose clubhouse is a few miles away from their home in Playa del Rey. She said it is where her children have grown up, familiarizing themselves with every inch.
“I remember taking my son there on the Fourth of July when he was just 3 weeks old. It was the first place we went with him as a newborn,” Dakoske Koslu said.
She and her husband biked to the club in the aftermath of the fire, greeted by the charred remains of the building on Wednesday afternoon.
“The destruction is unbelievable. It’s clear that the fire was burning intensely on the second floor,” Dakoske Koslu said. “There’s nothing left.”
The second floor once housed a collection of the club’s prestigious racing trophies, kept on display for members and visitors. The fire melted all but a single salvageable California Cup. Most notably, the priceless King of Spain Trophy, acquired in 1929 from King Alfonso XIII, was lost.
Additionally, the club lost cherished photographs of every past commodore, a significant position within a yacht club. Members said they didn’t know if anyone had digitized the images of the commodores or of the club’s founders.
“We would tell yachting stories at the bar around lots of memorabilia, and the yachting artifacts behind the bar are all gone now,” Tom Materna said. “The yacht club provided us a facility for the off-the-water celebrations after hard-fought competition on the water.”
The CYC dates to the early 1920s, started by boat owners from the Los Angeles Athletic Club and other yacht clubs. The Board of Harbor Commissioners approved the first clubhouse in 1922, designed by famed architect Edwin Bergstrom, co-designer of the Pentagon.
In 1965, the yacht club submitted a proposal for an all-encompassing $1-million, two-story, 10,000-square-foot clubhouse on four acres off Admiralty Way. Members envisioned a state-of-the-art facility with 170 boat slips, a guest dock, a small boat hoist and a dry land storage facility for boats. The clubhouse that resulted was dedicated on June 10, 1967.
Then-Commodore William A. DeGroot Jr. told The Times that the triangular parcel of land on which the clubhouse still sits is a “perfectly logical place for a club facility, and a commanding view down the main channel of the marina.”
Though the building has historical significance to its members, it does not have a historic designation, according to Linda Dishman, president of the Los Angeles Conservancy.
“We are deeply saddened by this tragedy and so grateful for the outpouring of support from the community and our members,” Myers said. “CYC has been a beacon for the nautical community for the past 101 years.”
Materna, 68, first found out about the fire through Facebook as friends posted videos and photos of the damage Tuesday morning. Then he began receiving calls and text messages from friends.
“Everybody woke up in the morning and realized we’d lost a significant part of the sailing community,” Materna said.
His connection to the club dates back nearly 52 years, to when he was just 16 years old. After spending 30 years sailing professionally with Hobie Cats, mainly racing catamarans — a watercraft with two parallel hulls of equal size — he recently served as a crew member on other club members’ racing yachts.
The CYC is pivotal in the boat racing community, organizing and hosting events such as the Optimist National Championship and Junior Olympic trials, Materna said. He fondly remembers the hundreds of people from across the globe converging on the marina for similar events.
The main topic among members now is what’s next for the club. Dakoske Koslu noted that the club’s ownership changed over the last few years, and many are unsure and concerned about the club’s continuation after the fire.
The club relocated to the marina in 1967, leasing the land it sits on from the county.
“I don’t think the county has really valued the contributions of the California Yacht Club as an important part of the Marina. They value Trader Joe’s because it’s more money for them,” Dakoske Koslu said.
Dakoske Koslu said she’s seen numerous small marine-oriented businesses displaced from the marina, making way for more commercialized developments such as Trader Joe’s and Recreational Equipment Inc.

Five people, including two children, are receiving treatment at a Massachusetts hospital after the boat they were on caught fire at the Metropolitan Yacht Club in Braintree.
A Braintree Fire Department captain said a call came in early Saturday afternoon regarding a boat fire at the yacht club's fueling dock early Saturday afternoon.
According to the fire captain, a retired Braintree police officer noticed the boat fire and used his personal boat to pull the burning vessel away from the fueling dock and into open water.
"This had the potential to be a catastrophic situation, but the quick thinking of the young woman at the fuel dock to hit the emergency shutoff and the actions of the retired officer pulling the boat away from the dock prevented that from happening," the captain told NewsCenter 5 on a phone call.
"I would like to commend our retired police officer and his daughter for their heroic actions at Metropolitan Yacht Club today. I would also like to commend our fire and police departments and their marine units for their exceptional performance in handling this situation," reads a statement from Braintree Mayor Charles Kokoros.
The boat was fully engulfed in flames and approximately 300 yards away from the yacht club when the Braintree Fire Department's boat arrived at the scene.
The fire captain said 10 people — six adults and four children — were on board the boat when the fire started. Two children on board were taken to the hospital to be treated for smoke inhalation, a woman suffered smoke inhalation and minor burns, and two adults suffered potentially serious burns.
The boat fire has since been extinguished and the vessel has now capsized. Sky5 captured video of the burned boat after it had capsized in the water. The fire captain said the boat will be removed from the water by Towboat USA.

Newsom signs laws to protect actors against unauthorized use of AI
SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- Gov. Gavin Newsom signed off Tuesday on legislation aiming at protecting Hollywood actors and performers against unauthorized artificial intelligence that could be used to create digital clones of themselves without their consent.
The new laws come as California legislators ramped up efforts this year to regulate the marquee industry that is increasingly affecting the daily lives of Americans but has had little to no oversight in the United States.
The laws also reflect the priorities of the Democratic governor who's walking a tightrope between protecting the public and workers against potential AI risks and nurturing the rapidly evolving homegrown industry.
"We continue to wade through uncharted territory when it comes to how AI and digital media is transforming the entertainment industry, but our North Star has always been to protect workers," Newsom said in a statement. "This legislation ensures the industry can continue thriving while strengthening protections for workers and how their likeness can or cannot be used."
Inspired by the Hollywood actors' strike last year over low wages and concerns that studios would use AI technology to replace workers, a new California law will allow performers to back out of existing contracts if vague language might allow studios to freely use AI to digitally clone their voices and likeness. The law is set to take effect in 2025 and has the support of the California Labor Federation and the Screen Actors Guild-American Federation of Television and Radio Artists, or SAG-AFTRA.
Another law signed by Newsom, also supported by SAG-AFTRA, prevents dead performers from being digitally cloned for commercial purposes without the permission of their estates. Supporters said the law is crucial to curb the practice, citing the case of a media company that produced a fake, AI-generated hourlong comedy special to recreate the late comedian George Carlin's style and material without his estate's consent.
"It is a momentous day for SAG-AFTRA members and everyone else because the AI protections we fought so hard for last year are now expanded upon by California law thanks to the legislature and Governor Gavin Newsom," SAG-AFTRA President Fran Drescher said in a statement. "They say as California goes, so goes the nation!"
California is among the first states in the nation to establish performer protection against AI. Tennessee, long known as the birthplace of country music and the launchpad for musical legends, led the country by enacting a law protecting musicians and artists in March.
Supporters of the new laws said they will help encourage responsible AI use without stifling innovation. Opponents, including the California Chamber of Commerce, said the new laws are likely unenforceable and could lead to lengthy legal battles in the future.
The two new laws are among a slew of measures passed by lawmakers this year in an attempt to reign in the AI industry. Newsom signaled in July that he will sign a proposal to crack down on election deepfakes but has not weighed in other legislation, including one that would establish first-in-the-nation safety measures for large AI models.
The governor has until Sept. 30 to sign the proposals, veto them or let them become law without his signature.
