BUCER'S

In our 21st year now, Bucer’s Coffeehouse & Pub has been roasting our own fine coffee, serving great espresso, baking beautiful pastries, grilling hearty sandwiches, pouring amazing local draught beers, and fine wines, and much more…

We do it all for a vibrant and diverse community that appreciates great food and drink, enjoys live music, and loves to run into their friends here in our pub.

THE ROASTERY

Bucer’s was built on the foundation of carefully selected 100% Arabica coffee, roasted fresh, in-house, every week. Our favorites tend to come from the isthmus area of Latin America (especially Guatemala, Nicaragua, and Costa Rica), the horn of Africa (especially Ethiopia), Sumatra, and Papua New Guinea – but we’re always running into stunning new coffees that we work into our regular rotation.

Our pride and joy – and the focus of our roasting – is our signature Bucer’s Blend. Bucer’s Blend combines beans from Latin America, East Africa, and Indonesia to create a nutty, chocolatey, earthy cup. Balancing these classic espresso notes with a light sweetness and elegant smoothness, it works beautifully as espresso but just as well in a French Press, pour-over, Aeropress, and even as a drip coffee.

Our Roastmaster roasts our coffee a few times weekly with a Turkish-built Toper 10-kilo roaster. The artisan craft originated with Bucer’s founding family and current owner, the Greenfields. Roasting our own guarantees the freshest cup in the region!

The Bucer’s kitchen staff gets started early in the morning, baking our own made-from-scratch muffins, cinnamon rolls, scones, and coffee cake. Our rich quiches come flourless or baked in a fine pastry crust, with options for vegetarians or meat-lovers. Our hearty Pub breakfast pastries and breakfast burritos are filled with eggs, sausage, and cheese. Our panini grilled sandwiches are piled with meats, cheeses, and veggies onto our fresh-baked focaccia bread. Plus a rotating variety of daily soups, pasta salad, brown rice salad (GF), or Asian kale salad (GF), and any number of inspired surprises.

Our homemade dessert selection includes our popular six-layer Guinness Chocolate Cake, Crumb Top Apple Pie, New York Cheesecake, Key Lime Pie, and our rich chocolate truffles and macaroons. Don’t forget to try our signature Affogato with Ferdinand’s local WSU creamery ice-cream.

There’s many more great menu items we could list here, but we recommend coming in, taking a look at our selection which includes many Gluten-Free options, and tasting some for yourself!

Every Thursday, Friday, and Saturday night, Bucer’s offers an eclectic blend of live music. We feature jazz, blues, Americana, Indie, folk, rock, etc. and many a singer-songwriter. Check our Facebook page or follow us on Twitter to get weekly updates about our featured artists and live music times.

All ages welcome and no cover charge! If you are interested in auditioning to play here, it’s simple! Email Pat at [email protected] Subject line: MUSIC and let us know who you are and what your sound is. We line up auditions on Sunday evenings while we’re closed, and then if you’re a good fit for Bucer’s, we’ll schedule you in!

A Note On Our Delivery Prices

Our goal is to be the best restaurant in Moscow, if not the world.

Due to the rising costs of food and labor and extremely high delivery fees, we can no longer cover these costs and stay in business. Delivery prices now reflect the charges imposed on businesses by third-party delivery services. Call-in or carry-out orders do not include these fees.

After many years of managing Orange Julius stores, owner Dave Thompson fulfilled his dream of opening his own restaurant in 2018. The name of Paradise Grill and Café is a playful combination of the great history of Moscow, ID, which at one time was named Paradise Valley, and his penchant for colorful Hawaiian shirts.

cafe eyachtal

All of our food is made to order, using fresh ingredients. Our famous curly fries, chips and wedges are hand cut and cooked in-house, made from real potatoes just hours before you order them. Our soups are also 100% house-made. Our pulled pork and brisket are smoked fresh by owner Dave to ensure the best flavor and product.

Local Pride

cafe eyachtal

We strive to be a welcoming, family-friendly restaurant. Through our open kitchen you can frequently see our crew laughing, singing and dancing as they swiftly prepare your food. We do what we can to support local groups and causes, and love to partner with other businesses or vendors for special events or collaborations.

“Best place in town for fresh made to order food. This is not a chain restaurant where all the food is frozen, it is freshly made every day including homemade fries chips and wedges.”       Cammelle Carey

I splurged on a $60 lunch at an iconic Moscow restaurant that's inside an 18th-century Russian aristocrat's mansion. Here's what it was like.

  • Café Pushkin is the one of the most iconic restaurants in Moscow .
  • Named after Russian poet Aleksandr Pushkin , the restaurant opened in 1999 in a renovated 18th-century Baroque mansion  in central Moscow.
  • It has more than 8,100 reviews  on TripAdvisor, with some describing it as "legendary," "iconic," and "like visiting a museum."
  • On the advice of a local, I went to Café Pushkin for lunch one day.
  • The food was delicious — albeit expensive — and I did feel as if I were eating in a museum.
  • Visit Business Insider's homepage for more stories.

Insider Today

Moscow may not have any Michelin-starred restaurants , but it's home to its fair share of fine-dining establishments.

Two Moscow restaurants — White Rabbit and Twins Garden — made the 2019 World's 50 Best Restaurants list , a ranking based on the opinions of international chefs, food writers, and "travelling gourmets."

But one of the most iconic restaurants in the city is Café Pushkin, named after the Russian poet Aleksandr Pushkin . On TripAdvisor, it has more than 8,100 reviews — and a higher rating than White Rabbit. Reviewers describe it as "legendary," "iconic," and "like visiting a museum."

Café Pushkin opened in 1999 in a renovated 18th-century Baroque mansion on Tverskoy Boulevard in central Moscow. The boulevard was a famous hangout for Moscow high society after it opened in 1796, and Pushkin himself was often seen strolling there, according to the restaurant's website.

While on a 12-day trip to Russia earlier this year, I had to go see what the hype was all about. On top of the solid reviews, a local had highly recommended that I eat there.

So one day, I went to Café Pushkin for a solo lunch — here's what it was like.

Café Pushkin is an iconic Russian-French restaurant in central Moscow, named after the Russian poet Aleksandr Pushkin.

cafe eyachtal

The restaurant opened in 1999 in a renovated 19th-century Baroque mansion on Tverskoy Boulevard, a famous hangout for Moscow high society where Pushkin himself was often seen strolling.

According to Café Pushkin's website, the mansion was built by a Saint Petersburg nobleman in the 1780s and later passed to a German aristocrat before becoming a pharmacy and, finally, a café.

During the holidays, Café Pushkin is lit up in festive, dazzling lights.

cafe eyachtal

I didn't get to see this display, unfortunately, as I visited in the summer.

Earlier this year, I spent 12 days traveling through Russia, and I couldn't leave Moscow without trying out the restaurant that TripAdvisor reviewers describe as "legendary," "iconic," and "like visiting a museum."

cafe eyachtal

Source : TripAdvisor

A man in a white polo shirt and jeans opened the heavy wooden doors for me as I walked into the restaurant.

cafe eyachtal

The hostess stood at a wooden lectern by the door.

cafe eyachtal

I didn't have a reservation, but for a weekday lunch, I apparently didn't need one. The hostess, who spoke perfect English, immediately led me to be seated past a wooden bar decorated with antiques.

cafe eyachtal

She seated me at a small corner table near a window.

cafe eyachtal

The restaurant wasn't too busy. Underneath the soft hum of conversation, I could hear classical piano music playing.

cafe eyachtal

The male servers at Café Pushkin wore black pants with crisp white shirts, red vests, and long white aprons.

cafe eyachtal

The women wore long red skirts, white shirts and aprons, and red ribbons tying their hair back.

cafe eyachtal

Even though Café Pushkin opened in 1999, I felt as if I were in a museum rather than a restaurant — especially when I looked up at the ornate ceiling.

cafe eyachtal

To my right, I had a view right into a greenhouse-type room with skylights and greenery hanging from beams on the ceiling.

cafe eyachtal

After taking a few minutes to observe the décor and take some photos, I checked out the menu.

cafe eyachtal

For starters, Café Pushkin offers several types of salad, including a grilled-duck-breast salad for 970 rubles (about $15) and a crab-meat salad with fresh cucumber and papaya for 1,790 rubles (about $28).

There were also homemade mini pies, which sounded more appealing to me and cost 170 to 250 rubles ($2.65 to $3.90) an order. I decided to get one with potatoes and mushrooms to start.

But first, wine.

cafe eyachtal

I took a chance and ordered a glass of Russian wine, even though I'd never tasted Russian wine in my life.

It was fine, but not my favorite.

As I waited for my appetizer and sipped my wine, I noticed a small yet genius touch I'd seen at another restaurant in Moscow but don't recall seeing anywhere else: a little stool to put your purse on.

cafe eyachtal

This is apparently a thing at fancy restaurants , which I obviously do not frequent.

About 10 minutes after I got my wine, my potato and mushroom mini-pie arrived. It was soft and flaky like a pastry, with the slightest crunch on the outer edge.

cafe eyachtal

The inside was piping hot. I ate the whole thing in about four bites, and it was delicious.

Mere seconds after I'd finished my mini-pie, my second dish arrived: a sea scallop and trout carpaccio that was almost too beautiful to eat.

cafe eyachtal

But eat it I did. The scallops and trout were sprinkled with chives and micro greens and drizzled with a mustard vinaigrette. Tiny adorable flowers made out of radishes and cucumbers were nestled on the side.

The dish was light and the fish tasted fresh. I ate it with a roll of soft and fluffy bread that the server offered me from a basket.

The carpaccio was 940 rubles, or about $14.70.

When it came to ordering the main dish, I'd briefly thought about being more adventurous, but then I decided to stick to what had quickly became one of my favorite Russian dishes: pelmeni, or traditional Russian dumplings, usually served with sour cream.

cafe eyachtal

I got the pork-lamb-and-beef pelmeni. The dumplings were dusted with a generous amount of dill, which is apparently Russia's most beloved herb and is sprinkled on anything and everything.

I'm not usually a big fan of sour cream, but at Café Pushkin it tasted fresh and homemade, and the tanginess seemed essential to go along with the dumplings.

Café Pushkin is also known for its caviar, which ranges from 850 rubles (about $13) for salmon caviar with buckwheat crepes to 14,200 rubles (about $222) for an assortment of sterlet, sturgeon, beluga, and golden caviar with crepes.

The pelmeni did not last long.

cafe eyachtal

By that time, I was so full I could barely finish the last couple of dumplings.

But the meal wasn't over.

To wrap things up, I got the restaurant's special Café Pushkin dessert.

cafe eyachtal

Café Pushkin is known for its extensive dessert menu, which has lemon pie, honey cake, an apple-and-caramel chocolate mousse, and millefeuille, among many other things.

Ultimately, I was glad I went with the classic namesake option, which cost 960 rubles, or about $15.

Layers of pistachio and raspberry sorbet were covered with a chocolate shell and shaved almonds, with a soft crust on the bottom. It was surrounded by some kind of unidentified yet delectable creamy sauce.

The total came out to 3,925 rubles, or about $61.

cafe eyachtal

It's not a price I would typically pay for a weekday lunch, but this was no ordinary lunch.

The décor made me feel as if I had traveled back in time, and the food and service were top-notch. Each of my dishes seemed to arrive at exactly the right time — neither too quickly nor too slowly.

I was surprised to realize I'd spent two hours at Café Pushkin. It doesn't seem like the place to stop in for a quick bite but rather to enjoy a leisurely meal in a setting that feels like an opulent museum.

While the restaurant is undeniably touristy, that does nothing to detract from its appeal.

Café Pushkin: A Dinner Date with History

cafe eyachtal

Café Pushkin is one of Moscow’s hidden gems. This grand palatial restaurant opened in 1999 – although many people are sure it has always been there. Let us investigate further.

The name Pushkin is homage to famed writer Alexander Pushkin who frequented the neighborhood. Or if you are a James Bond fan, perhaps General Pushkin from The Living Daylights sits better with you (I must confess that’s who I thought of initially). But names aside, we are here to experience the history of a pink Baroque mansion “a la russe”, in the middle of Moscow . But let’s start at the beginning.

In the late 18th-century a former nobleman in the service of Empress Catherine the Great moved to Moscow . There he decided to build a grand Baroque residence for his retirement with the help of Italian architects. After his death, the house passed to a German aristocrat who was on the verge of financial ruin. In order not to go bankrupt, he was forced to open a pharmacy in the building, which proved a success.

At the same time, a library full of reference books was installed on the upper and mezzanine floors. The library grew and became a extensive collection with more three thousand volumes in total (including works of Alexander Pushkin of course). Downstairs, the customers waiting for their medicines to be prepared could drink restorative beverages, teas, coffee, or hot chocolate while waiting for their medicines to be prepared. Thus a small café appeared on the ground floor of the building.

Fast forward a century or two, and we are finding our selves standing in a time capsule, surrounded by surviving elements and decorations from the building’s long and vivid past, including the stucco-work around the walls and ceilings, a cast-iron grille and paintings on the ceilings.

The Baroque mansion is now home of Café Pushkin . A colorful homage to Russian aristocracy and rich history of the building, which retains not only its extensive library, but also parts of the pharmacy, including the original pharmacy counter in pristine state.

We also find a great number of original porcelain bottles bearing Latin inscriptions, used in the preparation of medicinal powders, essences, and tinctures, with pharmaceutical scales. The numerous globes, microscopes and telescopes strongly hint of their forman German owners interest in the world of science.

There are also some later items that illustrate the technological progress of the twentieth century. They include a Latin-alphabet typewriter, a bouillotte, a soda syphon, a device for opening wine-bottles, chocolate-cups for hot chocolate and a musical box.

This café must be experienced in person. Whether you go for a quick breakfast, enjoy their extensive wine tasting evenings or delight in any of the gourmet creations of resident head chef Andrei Makhov .

Moscow Mule

Liquor.com has been serving drinks enthusiasts and industry professionals since 2009. Our writers are some of the most respected in the industry, and our recipes are contributed by bartenders who form a veritable "Who's Who" of the cocktail world.

The Moscow Mule is a classic combination of vodka, ginger beer, and lime. Known for it's iconic copper mug, the drink's enduring popularity has left it as a mainstay in bars since the mid-20th century. Despite its name, the Moscow Mule was actually invented in Los Angeles as part of an early stateside marketing push for vodka, and the drink itself is considered an example of the Buck family of drinks—those that include a spirit with citrus and ginger beer.

The History of the Moscow Mule

The Moscow Mule is a mid-century classic that was born in 1941 and helped contribute to vodka’s rise in America. As the legend goes , it was concocted by two men. John Martin needed to sell Smirnoff vodka, a new and generally unknown spirit during the middle of the 20th century that his distribution company had recently purchased. Another man, bar owner Jack Morgan, wanted to deplete the stash of ginger beer taking up space at his Cock ‘n’ Bull pub. They decided to combine the two ingredients with a little lime, and the rest is history. (Though there is a conflicting origin story that says that a bartender by the name of Wes Price was the true originator of the cocktail’s recipe.)

The origin of the Moscow Mule mug is slightly less clear, though evidence points to the connection originating with a Russian woman named Sophie Berezinski, who's father owned copper factory called Moscow Copper Co. Allegedly, poor sales in their home country left the younger Berezinski to travel to the U.S. to find new buyers.

As historian David Wondrich observes, the copper mugs reached Cock 'n' Bull and were used to create a visually distinct presentation for the new cocktail, helped along by Martin who took Polaroid instant photos (then a recent invention) of Los Angeles bartenders and guests holding the copper mugs alongside bottles of Smirnoff. The photos were displayed throughout the bar and given to patrons to share, almost in the same vein as modern social media influencers. As the photos proliferated throughout the Los Angeles cocktail community, it helped to spur demand for the novel drink.

Regardless of how the drink was invented, the easygoing combination of vodka, spicy ginger and tart lime—all packaged neatly in an eye-catching mug—was a hit. More than a quarter century later, the Moscow Mule remains a star. It has even spawned variations, like the Mezcal Mule with mezcal and the Kentucky Mule with bourbon.

Why the Moscow Mule Works

The simple cocktail combines vodka with ginger beer and fresh lime juice. It’s a no-tools-required drink that is built right in that shiny copper mug. Of course, while said mug is always preferred for serving, it’s not essential and shouldn’t deter you from making a Moscow Mule. The drink tastes great no matter the receptacle. So if a highball glass or rocks glass is all you have on hand, don’t fret.

Any preferred vodka will work nicely in the mule, but high-quality ginger beer is a must. You want a top-notch option that and offers enough of a spicy bite to complement the liquor and lime. And keep that bottle cold before you employ it your Moscow Mule. Cold keeps the bubbles brisk and helps stall dilution when you mix all the drink’s ingredients.

This recipe brings the legendary drink up to date while remaining true to its refreshing roots. At its core, the Moscow Mule is deceptively simple and incredibly easy to mix, perfect for any season.

Liquor.com / Tim Nusog

Ingredients

2 ounces vodka

1/2 ounce lime juice , freshly squeezed

3 ounces ginger beer , chilled

Garnish: lime wheel

Fill a Moscow Mule mug (or highball glass) with ice, then add the vodka and lime juice.

Top with the ginger beer.

Garnish with a lime wheel.

What If I Don’t Have a Copper Mug?

No doubt about it: The textured copper mug is a gorgeous part of a classic Moscow Mule. Truth is, it’s less the copper that matters than the conductivity of copper as a type of metal. So, blasphemous as it may appear, a Julep cup—or any other metal container—is a delightful substitute. Because you’ll still get that frosty, deeply cold result.
