Checkmate interior Anybody have any experience with replaceing the interior on an older checkmate trimate open bow? When I got the boat, all the interior was removed. The front seats would have been the circular ones? Anyone have a template for them, or have a pair? The rear bench seat, anyone have a template? I have the front bench seat, so I can make a template from the one there, but if you had a template, that would be great. Need interior help. What is the best material to make all the items out of? The easiest way to recover them? Will upolstry shops sew new material for you so it looks similar to how it came? Anybody sent there boat to checkmate to get new interior? Thanks Trey

Hey Tdog. We've had a bunch of members get Mate to do interiors and restoration work for them and we always hear pretty positive feedback about the results. Checkmate still keep many of the templates moulds etc. to build various replacement pieces for customers. They'll even build you an older model of boat if you want. I would try giving Mike Combs a call at Checkmate and see what they still have for your boat. Normally if you get the VIN number and provide that to him that can be a help. It's possible he may still have the build sheet for your boat. Mike will be able to tell you what what Mate still has on file for your boat. And also how to proceed if you want them to make a new interior for your boat. Here's a link to a thread on our site that Kip Combs started about some of the work the factory does. The phone number for the factory is there. Hope it helps, and let us know how you make out with the restoration. It would be nice to see some before and after results. Checkmate Restorations
Webmaster: Checkmate-Boats.com

Thanks Chris

The eluder they show a picture of looks awesome, and my interior is very similar to that one. Wish my boat looked that nice or factory new. I will call Mike today to see what he can do. The factory is not all that far away from me. 5 hours by mapquest. So I am going to see what they can do. Thanks Trey
Let me know how you make out. You might just be able to get Mate to make everything and ship it to you. Then you can just install it yourself.
I talked to Mike yesterday, and he does not have any of the patterns left out of the trimate boats. The eluder is similar and he can get me the front seats, and the front bench. The rear bench is different on mine. His suggestion to have it done right is to bring it to the factory in October, and then they will make everything just like it was from new. He said the other thing is to make up the templates myself and send them to him to make the interior pieces. Well, I am going to work on the templates as that will save me some money. Then I will see where that puts me. I am about 6 hours from the factory. I will get some before and after pics when I start. Trey
Trey, You might want to see if you can find someone who has a similar model. Gus' boat might be. If you can find someone that can make a template of the plywood for the seats that should help if you want to get someone local to make up the cushions. If you are going to send it to the factory, then it probably won't matter. I think the factory tries to do most of their resto work on the off season, which I assume is why they said bring it in next October. Keep in touch, and let me know how you make out. If you take some pics, I'd love to put them up in our forums! Usually we can get Kip to take some progression shots as they do the work too. If you ask him in advance, he'll usually forward them to me as they go. Then I'll post them on our board, and I can also send some to Greg if he would like. Chris

Shoot my you email adress and what you need. I have the interior out of my mate right now. The interior on my trimate was recovered a few years ago. Looks like they followed the patteren from the factory. I can take pictures and measure everything if you need to. Let me know what you need.

Did Mike give you any prices? My starflight could use some recovering.

Re: Interior

Originally posted by fnshrmaster Did Mike give you any prices? My starflight could use some recovering. I think pretty well every job is priced differently. He usually asks you to give him the VIN number of your boat and he pulls the build sheet for your boat. Then he will ask you what you would like done, and then he gives you a price. They'll make just skins and you can put them on yourself. Or you can literally take the entire boat there and they'll redo it for you if you like. They usually book restoration jobs for the winter, and the impression I get is that they don't really take on many jobs from spring to fall as they are busy building new boats.

What color are you looking at to do the interior in?
My Starflight has the raspberry and pink accents. The rest is black.I want to do away with the pink and get more black and raspberry. Its a 92 so I would imagine they have the material. Thnks,Kurt
Kurt, When I talked to Mike about some stuff for my own boat which is a '92, Mike said that he thought they might still have some of the original material left. He said if they didn't then they usually had or could get a very similar color. My boat is Teal, Black and White. The teal material was the only color that he said might be slightly different if they didn't have any left. And, if you are recovering everything, it might not matter anyway. One thing he did mention, is that they didn't have the original logos available for the bucket seats. He said they usually just used the updated one.

Good to hear.I dont care if they lost the pink material,I hope they took it and burned it!Who in there right mind wants a pink boat?Dont get me wrong,I love my checkmate but I wish the color scheme was a little different. When you buy used and the price is right you see past those 'little pink lines'.Thanks for the info Chris, and get out and go boating! Superyacht sinks latest: Underwater drone deployed to sunken yacht as families cling to air pocket theory

Search efforts have entered a third day for six tourists missing after a yacht sank off the coast of Sicily. Experts hope air pockets may offer a chance of survival, while divers have warned a "world of objects" stand in their way. Listen to a Daily podcast on the search as you scroll.

Another of the 15 survivors has been confirmed as Dutch national Tjis Koopmans.

Mr Koopmans, pictured in a white shirt leaving the coastguard headquarters on Monday, is thought to have been a member of the crew.

The yacht was carrying 10 crew members and 12 passengers when it capsized.

One crew member was confirmed dead: Chef Recaldo Thomas, a Canadian-Antiguan national.

Six passengers remain missing.

Divers have reached the area where the cabins are located, according to reports.

The spaces inside the ship are extremely narrow and difficult to manoeuvre within, Italian news outlet Corriere Della Sera said.

Objects floating in the water have made it "difficult to fully explore the cabins".

As such, there is no news as of yet on the missing tourists, who are thought to be inside the cabins, the media site reported.

Solo round-the-world yachtsman Tony Bullimore survived for four days by sheltering in an air pocket when his vessel capsized in the Southern Ocean in 1997.

His yacht, the Global Exide Challenger, was one of two to capsize in rough seas about 900 miles from Antarctica and 1,400 miles from the Australian coast during the Vendee Globe race.

He survived for four days in an air pocket inside the upturned hull with just a bar of chocolate and some fresh water for sustenance.

Experts have speculated air pockets could have formed as the Bayesian superyacht sank during a storm off the coast of Sicily (see post at 6.30am).

Mr Bullimore swam out from underneath the vessel after crewmen from the Australian Navy frigate HMAS Adelaide banged on the hull.

The former Royal Marine, who died in 2018 aged 79, suffered mild hypothermia, a fractured tooth, abrasions to his hands, frostbite on his forehead and fingertips, and moderate dehydration.

An upgraded underwater drone has been deployed at the site of the wreckage.

Earlier, the Italian coast guard reported it was using a drone with a two-hour underwater capability on the seabed, 50m deep.

The new robot can stay underwater for six to seven hours at a depth of 300m.

By comparison, divers who can only remained submerged at that depth for around 12 minutes.

The drone can record detailed videos and images, and will be used to reconstruct the accident for the Italian public prosecutor's office.

A team of four British inspectors from the Marine Accident Investigation Branch (MAIB) has arrived in Porticello, where they are expected to look at the site where the yacht sank.

They will carry out a "preliminary assessment" today, after arriving yesterday, PA reports.

They are looking into the incident because the Bayesian was flying a British flag - but the Italian Coastguard said the MAIB was not involved in the search and that it did not request assistance.

Spokesman Vincenzo Zagarola said: "Even if they come... the searches are carried out by the Italian authorities. Initiative [was] not requested by us."

A remote-controlled underwater vehicle (ROV) is being used to help with the search for the missing.

The depth of the wreck means divers can only spend around 12-minutes underwater - some of which is used just to descend or ascend.

They are also being hampered by the amount of furniture and other debris in the boat.

The ROV, however, is capable of operating on the seabed autonomously for more than two hours, according to the  Italian Coast Guard.

Marine investigator James Wilkes earlier told Sky News (see 9.15am post) the vehicle will be able to scan the wreck and use CCTV to find an access point.

This will make diving and the recovery of any bodies that may be in the yacht much safer for the dive teams.

Images show the search and rescue operation near the Porticello Harbour on the Sicilian coast.

Inspections of the yacht's hull took place after search crews arrived at around 6.30am local time.

A boat carrying divers was seen leaving the harbour at around 10.30am local time.

Mike Lynch's disappearance as he celebrated winning his US criminal trial after 12 years of fighting to clear his name is a "Shakespearean sort of tragedy", his friend says.

British entrepreneur Brent Hoberman, who has known Mr Lynch for 28 years, describes him as a "bit of a boffin" who was "quick-witted and smart" with an "infectious love of technology".

He says he asked his friend "the coward's question" before he stood trial for fraud in the US, accused of overstating the value of his company Autonomy when he sold it to technology firm Hewlett-Packard in 2011.

"I said, why don't you go somewhere and live somewhere which doesn't have an extradition treaty with the US?"

But Mr Lynch said "because I'm innocent, I'm going to stand my ground" and felt he had a better chance of acquittal than the 0.5% he was given, says Mr Hoberman.

"What an ordeal. This is a Shakespearean sort of tragedy," he adds.

"Somebody who spent 12 years defending their name, they just clear their name, they are going on a trip with the team who helped them do that to celebrate and then a sort of one in a million disaster hits their boat."

Mr Hoberman says he still hopes his friend "will have an amazing second act" and those who know him are praying for a miracle.

"God, what a amazing ending that would be," he says.

Two crew members who survived the disaster have said it is a "miracle" they are still alive, according to reports.

Leah Randall, 20, from South Africa, was photographed leaving the coastguard headquarters on Monday, alongside fellow crew member Katja Chicken, 22, from Germany.

The Italian news agency ANSA reports they were in tears in the hall of the Domina Zagarella hotel in Santa Flavia, which has become the headquarters of police and rescuers and where they are staying with other survivors.

"We are alive by a miracle," they said, while one added: "It was terrible," according to ANSA.

Ms Randall’s mother Heidi Randall previously told Sky News: "I'm beyond relieved that my daughter's life was spared by the grace of God.

"It doesn't make it any easier living with the heartache of those who have lost their lives or are missing.

"My very deepest condolences to the chef's family as they formed a great friendship."

The Bayesian yacht was the victim of a "black swan event", says the head of the Maritime Search and Rescue Council.

A black swan event is a term used to refer to a high-impact, rare incident that is difficult to predict, but is often rationalised in retrospect as having been inevitable.

Matthew Schanck says: "Looking at the extreme weather, if it was a waterspout, which it appears to be, it's what I would class as like a black swan event."

Waterspout is the name for a tornado-like rotating column of air spawned from the base of a cloud, usually during a thunderstorm.

"Even outside of the maritime industry, all industries struggle with the black swan events."

Mr Schanck says he is confident the authorities will "get to the bottom" of what caused the shipwreck, thanks to the accounts of survivors, witnesses and examination of the ship.

Emergency services at the scene of the search for a missing boat Monday in Porticello Santa Flavia, Italy.

PORTICELLO, Sicily — Rescue teams and divers were returning to the site of a storm-sunken superyacht off Sicily on Tuesday to search for six people, including British tech magnate Mike Lynch, who are believed to be still trapped in the hull, 50 meters (164 feet) underwater.

Divers were loading a rescue dinghy at the port of Porticello, near Palermo, after a first search Monday ended unsuccessfully. Fire rescue crews reported that divers were unable to access the below-deck cabins because they were blocked by debris that had shifted during the violent storm that toppled the luxury sailboat early Monday.

Fifteen people survived, including a mother who reported holding her 1-year-old baby over the waves to save her. One body has been recovered, officials said.

“Access was limited to the bridge, due to the difficulty represented by the presence of furnishings obstructing the divers’ passage,” the fire crews said in a statement.

The search was made particularly difficult because the ship was resting on the seabed at a depth of 50 meters, which limits the amount of time divers can be underwater, said fire rescue spokesperson Luca Cari. As a result, the search is expected to take time, he told The Associated Press early Tuesday.

The 56-meter (184-foot) British-flagged Bayesian luxury yacht had been moored about a half-mile off Ponticello when a storm rolled in around 4 a.m. Monday. Civil protection officials said they believed the ship was struck by a tornado over the water, known as a waterspout, which had passed over the area.

Fifteen of the Bayesian’s 22 passengers and crew managed to escape, first onto a lifeboat and then by a nearby sailboat, the Sir Robert Baden Powell, that had also been moored offshore to ride out the storm, Karsten Borner, the captain of the Baden Powell, told reporters at the scene.

One body, belonging to the Bayesian’s chef, was recovered nearby.

Among those missing was Lynch , who was once hailed as Britain’s king of technology. He was cleared in June of fraud and conspiracy charges in a U.S. federal trial related to Hewlett Packard’s $11 billion takeover of his company, Autonomy Corp. His wife, Angela Bacares, survived.

The vacation appeared to be something of a celebration after Lynch's acquittal, with guests including some of the people who had stood by Lynch throughout the ordeal. Among those unaccounted for, according to the civil protection agency, were one of Lynch’s U.S. lawyers, Christopher Morvillo of Clifford Chance, and Morvillo’s wife. Also among the missing was Jonathan Bloomer, the former head of the Autonomy audit committee who testified at Lynch’s trial, and his wife.

Among the survivors was Charlotte Golunski, who said she momentarily lost hold of her 1-year-old daughter Sofia in the water, but then managed to hold her up over the waves until a lifeboat inflated and they were both pulled to safety, Italian news agency ANSA reported. The father, identified by ANSA as James Emslie, also survived.

The yacht, built in 2008 by the Italian firm Perini Navi, was carrying 12 passengers and 10 crew. According to online charter companies, it has been available for charter for 195,000 euros (about $215,000) a week and is notable for its massive 75-meter tall aluminum mast, one of the tallest in the world.

Yachts in your shortlist

 - Sputnik International, 1920

“It will indeed be oriented towards African countries, India and Vietnam. The demand for these aircraft is quite high, it is estimated at least 300 aircraft in the near future,” Russian Deputy Prime Minister Yuri Borisov said at the presentation on Tuesday. Sukhoi expects to begin deliveries in under six years.
"Why were we able to make this aircraft so quickly? We used the Su-57 developments,” Chemezov explained, noting that among these were the jet’s single engine and its avionics systems.

A prototype of Russia's new Sukhoi Checkmate Fighter is displayed at the MAKS 2021 International Aviation and Space Salon, in Zhukovsky, outside Moscow, Russia. The missiles on display include the R-73 and R-77 anti-air missiles and the Kh-59MK anti-ship missile. - Sputnik International, 1920, 07.09.2021

The Checkmate will also be able to deploy missile-shaped drones from its internal weapons bay, according to the presentation. The fighter will be able to reach speeds of up to Mach 2.2 and an altitude of 54,000 feet.
Notable differences from the Su-57 include its single engine, which will make the Checkmate much lighter but also unable to recover from a burnout; the single diverterless supersonic inlet mounted under the nose; and the four angled tail surfaces, which give it a profile evocative of the failed YF-23 Black Widow, a competitor design to the aircraft that the Pentagon later adopted as the F-22.

Russia MAKS Airshow Checkmate Fighter - Sputnik International, 1920, 07.09.2021

Its name, Checkmate, is notably left untranslated from English even in Russian, where the winning move of a game of chess is called “shakh-i-mat.” That leaves little doubt about who the recipient of the message is.

This modification involves extending and angling the wing’s trailing edge, which results in an increased wing area and potentially a slight reduction in the aircraft’s rear radar signature.

Additionally, there seems to be a slight advancement in the engine installation. The fuselage has also undergone modifications, seemingly increasing the internal capacity of the aircraft.

This change suggests a possibility of enlarged side armament bays for housing short-range air-to-air missiles or an increased internal fuel capacity for the Checkmate, or perhaps both modifications have been implemented.

UAC has also introduced the concept of a “single-engine two-seater stealth aircraft.” Similar to other two-seater Sukhoi models, the modifications incorporate a tandem cockpit configuration, with the rear seat elevated to provide improved forward vision.

This design modification ensures increased visibility for the rear-seat occupant and contributes to the overall sleekness of the aircraft.

Apart from its role in training future Su-75 crews, the two-seat version of the aircraft can potentially serve as a “command center” for drones and unmanned combat aircraft of the Loyal Wingman type.

This configuration will enable the aircraft to effectively coordinate and manage operations involving multiple unmanned assets, demonstrating its versatility and adaptability in modern warfare scenarios.

Alongside the piloted aircraft design, an unmanned variant of the Checkmate was also presented, resembling its manned counterpart.

This unmanned version represents a key feature under development for sixth-generation air dominance systems, frequently described as “optionally manned” in various reports.

Nonetheless, including an unmanned variant highlights the future direction of air combat systems, highlighting the increasing role of unmanned technologies in achieving air superiority.

Speaking with EurAsian Times under the condition of anonymity, a former F-35 pilot remarked that modifications in the design of a fighter aircraft currently in the developmental process are to be expected and should not be viewed as extraordinary.

The pilot stated that “Russia’s Su-75 Checkmate is still primarily in the conceptual phase,” implying that further modifications can be anticipated based on the test outcomes required during the development stage.

That being said, despite the substantial journey still ahead to bring these designs to life as operational combat aircraft, valid doubts remain regarding Russia’s ability to fully advance this project, given its current focus on the conflict in Ukraine.

Can Su-75 ‘Checkmate’ F-35 Global Sales?

Unveiled at the MAKS-2021 International Aviation and Space Exhibition in Russia, the Russian defense industry has positioned the Checkmate stealth fighter as a state-of-the-art light tactical combat aircraft with futuristic capabilities.

Reports from state media regularly suggest that the country is committed to the timely development of the aircraft. Furthermore, there is a notable emphasis on the country’s intention to position the Su-75 Checkmate as an attractive option for international customers.

With a focus on affordability, the country’s defense sector aims to offer this stealthy aircraft at a competitive price, targeting the global market for potential exports.

The design of the Checkmate was reportedly formulated by capitalizing on the scientific and technical foundation established during the creation of the export variant of the Su-57E fifth-generation fighter.

It is believed that certain technologies such as onboard systems, cockpit, and other elements will also be derived from the Su-57 aircraft.

This approach is expected to reduce costs and enhance maintenance efficiency, as leveraging existing technologies and infrastructure can streamline production processes and optimize maintenance procedures.

Moscow has also said that the fighter jet will be able to seamlessly collaborate with unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) within a networked configuration.

This advanced capability will enable the warplane to exercise control over small drones, which will receive real-time information regarding the ongoing combat scenario through the utilization of transmission technologies.

But Western experts assert that Moscow has purposely designed the Su-75 Checkmate to directly compete with the US F-35 as a fifth-generation aircraft, aiming to appeal to Russian allies and potential customers worldwide.

su-57-su-75

Several US allies, including many European nations, are either currently using or in the process of acquiring the F-35 fifth-generation fighter aircraft. In contrast, Moscow has made only limited headway in achieving the deployment of stealth fighter aircraft in its Air Force.

“Even Russia’s Su-57 program has faced challenges in achieving the desired operational readiness and efficiency, which have impeded its extensive deployment,” the former F-35 pilot told EurAsian Times.

He explained that “comparing F-35 Joint Strike Fighter (JSF) Program with Russia’s Checkmate fighter program is illogical.”

According to the ex-pilot, “the future trajectory of the Checkmate program remains uncertain, while the F-35 program represents a well-established and advanced platform.”

Regarding the potential export of the Su-75, the former F-35 pilot stated that while the aircraft appears promising on paper and presents an attractive option for developing countries, the heavy sanctions imposed on Russia would hinder its chances of being ordered by any friendly nation.

The former pilot cited the example of Indonesia, which abandoned its plans to acquire the ‘Flanker-E’ aircraft and instead chose to procure French Rafales, possibly due to the potential impact of sanctions.

He noted, “Many countries, including India, are already developing their next-generation fighter jets. As a result, it would be illogical for these nations to acquire a new stealth fighter aircraft from Moscow.”

Nonetheless, the modifications to the original designs serve as evidence that the development of the Su-75 Checkmate is still ongoing, even though challenges and obstacles lie ahead.
