Nilaya Superyacht

“ Nilaya will be the world’s lightest aluminum sailing superyacht for her length: She rewrites the script for high-performance superyachts,” Royal Huisman CEO Jan Timmerman said in a statement .

Nilaya ’s interior and exterior were executed by Nauta Design, while her naval architecture comes courtesy of Reichel-Pugh Yacht Design. This duo actually designed the owner’s maxi-racer of the same name. It’s not surprising, then, that the new sloop echoes her predecessor with a racy, low profile, a straight bow, a wide transom and twin rudders.

Royal Huisman conducted a careful weight analysis inside and out to ensure each part of Nilaya was crafted from the right lightweight material. The yard also utilized the carbon-fiber expertise of sister company Rondal. The curvaceous coachroof and guest cockpit, for instance, were made from carbon composite. Nilaya ’s mast, boom and standing rigging are also carbon to keep the yacht’s weight as low and as centered as possible for optimal balance.

Onboard, the 154-footer can sleep between eight and 10 seafarers, along with eight crew. The interiors combine “a modern look with classic elegance” and are said to be light yet warm and welcoming.

Nilaya will reportedly be delivered to her owners in the coming months.

NILAYA // Royal Huisman

Royal huisman unveiled the 47m sailing yacht nilaya aka project 405 aka nauta reichel pugh 151..

NILAYA (the name means blissful home) is a 47m lightweight sloop-rigged sailing yacht made of aluminum and carbon composite. The yacht weighs 11 percent less than typical aluminum cruising sailing yachts. Nauta Design delivered the exterior and the interior design, while the speed specialists Reichel/Pugh made the calculations. Even the owner’s professional racing team was involved. The carbon-fiber rig by Royal Huisman’s subsidiary Rondal has a Panamax height to cross the Panama Canal. The owner’s brief calls for a comfortable yacht with the potential to win superyacht regattas.

“And the owners did not just want to take delivery of such an intriguing yacht; they wanted to be part of the whole process of designing and building it, and enjoy every step of the way. Which is why from the moment of the project’s inception, the owners drew together the team that could realize this experience for them”

The yacht accommodates ten guests, including the owners and a crew of eight people.

Project 405 has been contracted remote

Due to the global COVID-19 situation, Royal Huisman contracted Project 405 with video conferencing between the owners, the design and development team, and the owners’ representative Nigel Ingram of MCM Newport.

Sailing Yacht Nilaya Royal Huisman

Mario Pedol of Nauta Design reports back from the sea trials of Nilaya, the 47m Royal Huisman custom sailing yacht that is Nauta Design’s current sail division flagship: “ A full day in beautiful sunny and windy weather in the North Sea off Amsterdam showed how Nilaya’s performance under sail is truly outstanding ,” Pedol says. “ By the time the mainsail was hoisted, the breeze had built to a steady 18 knots. We sailed on a broad reach with the mainsail and Code Zero and rapidly reached a truly impressive 17 kt. boat speed. It was just the beginning of a great day of sailing with the Owner and all of the main players of his and the Builder’s teams. This fantastic yacht showed to really match all of the quite demanding main aspects of the Owners’ brief. Royal Huisman masterly succeeded in engineering and building the yacht, fulfilling the Owner’s request in terms of robustness, reliability, quietness, and last but not least, amazing performance under sail, thanks to super high-level Naval Architecture by Reichel/Pugh Yacht Design. ”

47-metre sailboat : Royal Huisman docks the new "Nilaya"

Sören Gehlhaus

 ·  01.02.2023

"Nilaya": After a good two-year construction phase, Royal Huisman rolled the 46.80-metre-long aluminium-carbon construction out of the large hall in Vollenhove. The owner once again dispensed with a bowsprit | t

"Nilaya", this name was previously emblazoned in exactly the same font on the transom of a 34-metre-long Baltic. The owner successfully competed in regattas with the carbon cruiser built in 2010, had it refitted in 2017 and sold it in the summer of 2022 (now "Shagala Bagala"). So now aluminium instead of carbon. Not quite. Royal Huisman had the 17.50-metre-long superstructure laminated with carbon fibre by sister company Rondal.

And the Dutch also welded the aluminium hull - this term will be permitted due to the wide and flat frames - under strict weight specifications. Royal Huisman calls the new hybrid construction "Featherlight", which is intended to make "Nilaya" eleven per cent lighter in total compared to the previous construction method. The traditional shipyard already uses Alustar, a material that is 20 percent stronger than conventional aluminium.

Lightweight construction with modern materials and proprietary software

"The hull and deck make up only 15 per cent of the total weight of a modern sailing yacht." This quote comes from Mario Pedol, co-founder of Nauta Design. The Milan-based creative studio developed the concept with the "Nilaya" owner and designed both the interior and exterior. The fully glazed deckhouse with a flat rising front and a wave-shaped transition to the coaming deserves a special mention. According to Pedol, the advantages of metal hulls are the noise comfort below deck, the strength of the material and the possibility of having repairs carried out in almost any part of the world.

The featherweight concept also means that the tubes are made of composite rather than metal and the interior is constructed using foam cores and ultra-thin wood veneer. In some structural areas, additional rigidity is achieved by bonding carbon fibre to aluminium using the latest techniques. Royal Huisman engineers developed a proprietary parametric software tool to quickly evaluate different structural designs based on weight, stiffness and strength.

A hull with a broad impact

There are 13 years between the launches of the two "Nilayas", a long period of time in yacht design and a good opportunity to illustrate changes based on the hull shape. Especially as the Californians from Reichel/Pugh were the same design office in each case. The length-to-width ratio of 4.5 has remained the same, but the new model has a much wider stern. The widest point measures a full ten metres at cockpit level. The stem is now almost vertical, the freeboard is similarly flat, the waterline longer - and narrower at the same time. This - aft dramatic - drop in the circumference is made possible by a soft chine that rises just behind the bow and flows into the top of the stern. The annex ensemble consists of a twin rudder, lift keel (4.50 to 6.90 metres) and shaft system with controllable pitch propeller.

Royal Huisman has integrated a recessed tender parking area into the foredeck. As is usual on yachts of this length and is signalled by the hull windows above the waterline, this should result in a tween deck that accommodates the line guide, hydraulics and captive winches. Rondal made the latter from carbon, which weigh half as much as the aluminium version. The one-piece laminated Panamax mast comes from the same halls and also from the autoclave. The carbon top is below the height limit of 60 metres in order to be able to pass the bridges of the Panama Canal.

Aerodynamically optimised spreaders protrude from the mast, which are particularly thin and shaped like inverted swallow wings. After all, "Nilaya" wants to compete on an equal footing with full-carbon formats of the same length. The specifications list Bouwe Bekking under "Owners' Race Team". The Dutch sailing pro was already an integral and central part of the race crew as a tactician and will prove the potential of the 47-metre-long aluminium CFRP construction this year.

Royal Huisman launch 47m ‘Nilaya’

This is the first vessel to utilize royal huisman’s new featherlight design and production method  ….

Image for article Royal Huisman launch 47m ‘Nilaya’

Panamax sloop Nilaya reached another milestone with its departure from the construction hall of the builder’s Vollenhove facility in preparation for the installation of its towering rig in Amsterdam.

This is the first vessel to utilize Royal Huisman’s new Featherlight design and production method. Continuous weight monitoring throughout the build of Project 405 aka Reichel/Pugh - Nauta 154, confirms the Dutch builder has achieved its goal of slicing 11% of the weight of its typical advanced aluminium cruising yachts.

Most importantly, it has reduced weight without sacrificing stiffness or cutting corners on quality for this high-performance cruiser. The shipyard’s Featherlight method for this 46.8m sailing yacht is not a single process or construction technique, but a holistic lightweight approach combining various weight-saving solutions.

nilaya yacht huisman

The Featherlight process makes use of Finite Element Analysis (FEA), a design methodology rooted in spacecraft technology. FEA modelling enabled the selection of various construction materials and varied Alustar aluminium plate thicknesses and frame spacing to maximize hull stiffness while minimizing total displacement. With engineering and weight management brought in-house, the approach was comprehensive, extending to lighting, insulation, and all mechanical systems. The interior, too, benefited from careful weight analysis. All interior structural members utilize lightweight foam coring. This innovative approach narrows the displacement gap between aluminium and carbon composite yachts.

Capturing the carbon fibre expertise of its sister company Rondal, Royal Huisman’s engineering team used this synergy to analyze and predict which structural components would be best made of composites or aluminium. For example, the entire 17.5m curvaceous coachroof and guest cockpit structure are carbon composite. Likewise, the recessed tender well on the foredeck (that transforms into a seating area for cruising or a flush deck for racing) is also carbon composite as are a watertight bulkhead, crew entrance, twin rudders, the keel trunk and a cockpit bimini hardtop.

nilaya yacht huisman

For any high-performance cruiser, a carbon fibre mast, boom, and standing rigging are critical to keeping weight as low and as centred as possible for optimal balance. While Rondal has considerable carbon spar expertise, bringing the design of this component — and the sailmaker – into the process during the larger hull design phase is a page out of a maxi-racer’s playbook.

Project 405 is also the first yacht of this size range designed to take advantage of structured luff sail design pioneered by Doyle Sails, a choice that allowed the entire Rondal mast, rig, and components to be lighter — a key point considering its Panamax air draft. To take advantage of the very narrow headsail sheeting angles possible, Rondal created a radical new curved carbon fibre spreader design that is both shorter and more aerodynamic than anything previously available. Rondal also supplied new generation hybrid (carbon and aluminium) captive winches, hatches and various sail handling gear. Most deck hardware is titanium.

nilaya yacht huisman

Nilaya’s racy, low profile with its straight bow, wide transom, and twin rudders, echoes the look of her owners’ previous highly successful maxi-racer of the same name. Not surprisingly, it is from the boards of the same naval architecture and design firms, Reichel/Pugh and Nauta, both firms with impressive reputations for high-performance sailing yachts. Exploring all the options for a luxurious performance cruiser also capable of podium finishes at superyacht regattas, the team made full design studies for the yacht in both carbon and aluminium using computational fluid dynamics (CFD) to optimize hull shape and balance.

Nigel Ingram of MCM Newport serves as the owners’ project manager on the build. “While the new Nilaya is meant to take the owners world cruising, he also asked for a boat with all the ‘good habits’ of their previous racer, meaning responsiveness and excellent handling. Alustar aluminium is the right material for an advanced, quality superyacht for global cruising. It deals with noise better and is a better choice for cruising in comfort to remote locations. However, we also thought it was possible to build a lighter aluminium high-performance superyacht. Royal Huisman was not afraid to invest in research to explore and develop all manner of innovative weight-saving possibilities. They really chased the details.”

nilaya yacht huisman

Nauta Design’s Mario Pedol noted that the choice of primary hull material did not fundamentally change the yacht’s layout or total weight. “With Reichel / Pugh, we set the target weight. Royal Huisman really embraced the concept. It was a very good process, good collaboration.”

Royal Huisman CEO Jan Timmerman used the occasion to highlight both the innovative construction methodology and the latest milestone for Project 405: "The success of the innovations with Project 405 paves the way to use this bold new approach for future builds. I am proud of the investment we have made in advanced engineering and of the way teams from Royal Huisman and Rondal advanced new solutions to meet the brief from very knowledgeable clients and designers. The owners as well deserve congratulations for pushing everyone to achieve just a little bit more and for encouraging innovation at every step. Nilaya will be the world’s lightest aluminium sailing superyacht for her length: she rewrites the script for high-performance superyachts.”

Royal Huisman Project 405 Nilaya will be delivered to her owners in the coming months.

Nilaya: 47m Royal Huisman sailing superyacht leaves shed

Friday, February 3rd, 2023

Written by: Marine Industry News

The 46.8m Royal Huisman sailing yacht Nilaya has been photographed for the first time, as the Panamax sloop rolled out of the Royal Huisman construction shed at the Dutch shipyard’s Vollenhove construction facility.

The aluminium superyacht will have now her masts stepped in Amsterdam before hitting the water later this year.

This superyacht is said to be the first to utilise Royal Huisman’s new Featherlight design and production method — which the firm says is “not a single process or construction technique but a holistic lightweight approach combining various weight-saving solutions… rooted in spacecraft technology.” The yard says Nilaya is the world’s lightest aluminium sailing superyacht for her length.

Project 405 Nilaya

Continuous weight monitoring throughout the build of Project 405, aka Reichel / Pugh – Nauta 154, confirms the Dutch builder has achieved its goal of slicing 11 per cent of the weight of its typical advanced aluminium cruising yachts.

Importantly, Royal Huisman says it has reduced weight on the high-performance cruiser without sacrificing stiffness or cutting corners on quality.

Turning to the carbon fibre expertise of its sister company Rondal, Royal Huisman’s engineering team analysed and predicted which structural components would be best made of composites or aluminium. For example, the entire 17.5m coachroof and guest cockpit structure are carbon composite. Likewise, the recessed tender well on the foredeck is also carbon composite, as are a watertight bulkhead, crew entrance, twin rudders, the keel trunk and a cockpit bimini hardtop.

Project 405 Nilaya

The carbon fibre mast, boom, and standing rigging — all standard on a high-performance cruiser — keep weight as low and as centred as possible for optimal balance.

Project 405 is also said to be the first yacht of this size range designed to take advantage of structured luff sail design pioneered by Doyle Sails , a choice that allowed the entire Rondal mast, rig, and components to be lighter — a key point considering her Panamax air draft.

To take advantage of the very narrow headsail sheeting angles possible, Rondal created a radical new curved carbon fibre spreader design that the firm claims is both shorter and more aerodynamic than anything previously available. Rondal also supplied new generation hybrid (carbon and aluminium) captive winches, hatches and various sail handling gear. Most deck hardware is titanium.

Nilaya ‘s racy, low profile with its straight bow, wide transom, and twin rudders echoes the look of her owners’ previous highly successful maxi-racer of the same name. The vessel is from the boards of the same naval architecture and design firms, Reichel / Pugh and Nauta.

Nigel Ingram of MCM Newport serves as the owners’ project manager on the build. “While the new Nilaya is meant to take the owners world cruising, he also asked for a boat with all the ‘good habits’ of their previous racer, meaning responsiveness and excellent handling,” says Ingram. “Alustar aluminium is the right material for an advanced, quality superyacht for global cruising. It deals with noise better and is a better choice for cruising in comfort to remote locations.

Project 405 Nilaya

“However, we also thought it was possible to build a lighter aluminium high-performance superyacht. Royal Huisman was not afraid to invest in research to explore and develop all manner of innovative weight-saving possibilities. They really chased the details.”

Nauta Design’s Mario Pedol adds that the choice of primary hull material has not fundamentally changed the yacht’s layout or total weight. “With Reichel / Pugh, we set the target weight. Royal Huisman really embraced the concept. It was a very good process, good collaboration.”

Royal Huisman Project 405 Nilaya will be delivered to its owners in the coming months.

Last year, Royal Huisman signed an order for an 85m sloop , which the company is calling a ‘revolutionary’ step into the future for superyachts. The vessel, currently known as Project 410, will also be the world’s largest sloop upon completion. Currently, that title is held by  M5 , a 77.6m sloop-rigged superyacht launched in 2003 in the UK as  Mirabella V .

Continuous weight monitoring throughout the build of Project 405, aka Reichel/Pugh – Nauta 154, confirms the Dutch builder has achieved its goal of slicing 11% of the weight of its typical advanced aluminum cruising yachts. Most importantly, it has reduced weight without sacrificing stiffness or cutting corners on quality for this high-performance cruiser. The shipyard’s revolutionary Featherlight™ method for this sailing machine is not a single process or construction technique, but a holistic light weight approach to yacht building combining various complimentary weight-saving solutions utilizing aluminum and carbon fiber components.

“For such a large yacht, the acceleration is exciting as she rapidly reaches high speeds,” says Nigel Ingram of MCM Newport, who served as owners’ project manager. “Twin rudders and the light, positive steering give superb maneuverability and she has reached all her project targets with ease. Rondal’s sailing systems enable fingertip control of the massive loads involved.”

Nauta Design created the general concept, the exterior design, and the interior design plan with the light, calm, contemporary décor that has been unpacked for the first time now that trials are complete. Ingram continues: “Below decks, life is as comfortable and quiet as one would expect of the latest performance cruiser from Royal Huisman. The builder’s efforts toward building a light and stiff structure have paid off.”

Mario Pedol, co-founder of Nauta Design, adds following his overall experience during sail trials:

“Nilaya is not good… She is superb.”

Royal Huisman CEO Jan Timmerman called the Nilaya’s departure bittersweet. “We are always a bit sad to see one of our yachts sail away; it’s a bit like a child leaving home. At the same time, we are proud to have delivered another unique vessel, especially one that advances innovative engineering and build technology. Nilaya is a milestone in composite superyachts in the truest sense of the word and another fine example of Royal Huisman’s ability to provide owners with the ultimate expression of personal freedom. We wish her owners and all onboard fair winds and following seas during both world cruising and many exciting regattas.”

Nilaya sparkles at her sea trial

Mario Pedol, co-founder of Nauta Design, reports back from the sea trials on 31 May 2023: “A full day in beautiful sunny and windy weather in the North Sea off Amsterdam showed how Nilaya’s performance under sail is truly outstanding,” Pedol says. “By the time the mainsail was hoisted the breeze had built to a steady 18 knots. We sailed on a broad reach with the mainsail and Code Zero and rapidly reached a truly impressive 17 knots boat speed. It was just the beginning of a great day of sailing with the owner and all of the main players of his and the builder’s teams.

This fantastic yacht showed to really match all of the quite demanding main aspects of the owners’ brief. Royal Huisman masterly succeeded in engineering and building the yacht, fulfilling the owner’s request in terms of robustness, reliability, quietness and last but not least amazing performance under sail, thanks to super high level naval architecture by Reichel/Pugh Yacht Design.” Pedol also felt that his studio’s specific request for longitudinal stiffness, a very important performance booster aboard a sailing yacht, was fully met using thorough and deep final element structural analysis.

An investment in our DNA

While many aluminum vessels have some composite parts, Nilaya is much more a hybrid. The revolutionary element of the Featherlight™ method for this 47m / 154-foot sloop is not a single process or construction material, but a holistic light-weight method for delivering a global cruising yacht that also will be competitive in superyacht racing events.
