RYA Day Skipper Online Course | Get your ICC
Official rya day skipper knowledge & theory course.
The RYA Day Skipper Online Course prepares sailors to confidently skipper small yachts (28ft and greater) in coastal waters and qualify for the ICC License. Covering navigation, pilotage, collision avoidance, rules of the road, weather forecasting, and passage planning, this comprehensive course is a prerequisite for the RYA Day Skipper certificate and ICC License. Practical training with an authorized RYA school is required for certification. Alternatively, sailors can obtain the globally accepted SLC. By course completion, participants will possess the knowledge and confidence to navigate coastal waters and handle various sailing scenarios.
Estimated Time: 40 hours Price: $294 + support materials (approx. $95 in the US and CAN)
If you want to get an International Sailing License, particularly for the Mediterranean, you have two best options: the ICC or the SLC. This course is the Official RYA Day Skipper Course. You will gain the ICC after passing this course AS WELL AS you must pass a 5-day practical training and assessment on-the-water training at an official RYA School. Just FYI - In North America, there are a limited number of RYA Schools. But many worldwide.
Your second option for an International Sailing License is the NauticEd SLC where there are many more training and assessment centers in North America (and a few worldwide). See below for the SLC options.
This RYA Day Skipper Course
Sign up today and gain the necessary knowledge and skills to confidently skipper a sailboat (28 feet or 8.5 meters, and greater) in coastal waters. This comprehensive course covers topics such as navigation, pilotage, collision avoidance, rules of the road, weather forecasting, and passage planning.
By the end of the course, you will have gained the knowledge and confidence necessary to skipper a vessel and handle a variety of situations that may arise at sea. Don't hesitate to start your journey toward becoming a competent and safe skipper. Embark on this official RYA Day Skipper Course online and fulfill the knowledge requirements for obtaining your ICC License and RYA Day Skipper Certificate.
The exam is an open-book exam and is graded by a real human usually in 1-2 days. It covers general knowledge questions as well as chart plotting and tides. If you don't pass the first time, you can take the exam again.
Once you have gained the RYA Day Skipper Certificate you are eligible for an ICC which is gained through the RYA in the U.K. (instructions for obtaining the ICC after passing this course are included in this course). Alternatively, consider the NauticEd SLC (International Sailing License and Credentials) and Bareboat Charter Master bundle. The SLC is an equally accepted Sailing License globally and has more assessment schools throughout North America as well as some internationally - see the NauticEd Sailing Schools page.

Student Reviews
The course was very detailed. I really felt I learned it lot. (I have taken several ASA courses, including Coastal Navigation, but this was much more demanding..which is good!
Excellent course and very thorough. I had one issue with something technical and Grant responded right away to offer assistance. Couldn't recommend more!
The animations were useful to help understand the subjects.
The interactive content was great. Also the animations helped a lot with learning the concepts. I also liked the additional useful information given above the course content. Especially some of the external links. The value for money was good as well.
Wealth of additional information to consider as you begin to set up your boat for cruising.
This is a very thorough preparation for the RYA Day Skipper Theory test. There are so many, excellent practice questions and exercises throughout the course, that I couldn't help but ask myself "is that all?" upon reaching the end of the final exam. The RYA material itself is excellent and the NauticEd material online summarizes and supplements the key points very well.
kept the nose to the grindstone had to get money out of the deal
The content was comprehensive with clear examples and animations making it easy to understand. The end of module questions really helped consolidate what I had learned. I loved being able to take the course at my own pace, fitting my learning around other commitments. I would highly recommend this to anyone wanting to gain a good knowledge base that can be used whenever you go out sailing.
RYA courses are far superior to anything this side of the pond. NauticEd Ed presents the material well and the proctored remote exams are superb. You need this qualification along with the practical RYA Day Skipper to sail in many European Countries. Don’t go to Greece without it.
covers the material very well and in depth provides practical advice for real-life situations the structure and feel of the course is consistent with the RYA exam - I felt very well prepared for the exam
Excerpt from the course
The following is an excerpt from this course
RYA Day Skipper Course: Tides and Current
... So what are the tide heights at times other than at high and at low? You can not assume a linear progression. It more acts like a sine curve. To calculate the tide height at any time you use a tide curve specific for that location.
... The following animation shows how to predict the tidal height using a tide chart.

RYA Day Skipper Power
Rya day skipper power overview:.
The RYA Day Skipper Motor (Power) Course includes boat handling safety and navigation skills and is aimed at new motor cruiser skippers. It enables new motorboats to skipper a motor cruiser in familiar waters by day. Any UK citizen or bona fide resident who achieves the Day Skipper Power is automatically eligible for the ICC (International Licence) for powered craft (unrestricted by length).
HOW LONG IS THE RYA DAYSKIPPER POWER COURSE?
The RYA Day Skipper Power course takes 4 days including a night navigation exercise one evening. Once certified your certificate never expires.
PRE REQUISITES:
- Minimum age 16
- RYA Day Skipper Shorebased
- RYA Helmsman’s Course
- RYA Powerboat Level 2
- 2 days crewing onboard a motor cruiser or powerboat including some experience of helming
DO I NEED TO DO THE DAY SKIPPER SHOREBASED THEORY BEFORE THE DAY SKIPPER PRACTICAL?
Yes, absolutely! It would be very hard to pass the practical course if you have not completed the theory course first. Anyone that tells you otherwise is giving you very poor advice. If you arrive at our centre with the correct pre requisites then we will do everything we can to ensure you leave with a successful pass and if you don’t pass you will benefit from our Chieftain Second Chance Promise .
RYA DAY SKIPPER POWER COURSE CONTENT
This four-day course gives you the chance to take charge of a motor yacht on short passages, under instruction. You will concentrate on pilotage, boat handling, seamanship and navigation. The course includes a 4 hours night exercise, on one of the first three evenings.
RYA DAYSKIPPER POWER COURSE RATIO & VESSEL
The RYA set a maximum Motor Cruising ratio of 5 students to 1 instructor (5:1). Some UK centres reduce this to 4:1, but we go further, 3:1. This means you spend at least a third of the time on the wheel, with considerable opportunity to navigate and skipper. You will not sit through long periods of your course watching other candidates, “have a go.”
How do we do this? We run a sensible sized (8.5m) motor boat which can be operated safely by just 2 crew. If you want to train on a larger, twin engine motor yacht then we are probably the wrong school for you! Be aware, you are unlikely to be guaranteed such a good Student : Instructor ratio elsewhere! Click here for information about our training vessel(s).

Dayskipper Practical – on our boats - General
The RYA Dayskipper Practical course is aimed at those who have a limited amount of boating experience and who want to develop the skills to undertake short inshore passages as well as moderate length passages along a coastline – such as from Poole to Weymouth or the Solent.
Course Duration
4 days from 9am to 5pm but with one day starting later and finishing after dark. The course can be undertaken over a single four day spell or two weekends.
Course Dates
We run these courses regularly – see the ‘Book Now’ page for dates. You can specify a dedicated date if you book and pay for three persons and the vessel becomes your own for that course.
Course location
Our Dayskipper Practical Courses normally run from Poole but dates for Lymington can be scheduled too.
Prior Experience Required
Candidates should have some experience and be keen to develop their knowledge onto the next level. This course is extremely popular as success on it entitles the holder to apply for their ICC.
Minimum age
For the Dayskipper Practical course the minimum age is 16 however for Helmsman it is 12 and for Start Motor Cruising it is 8.
Instructor – Student Ratio
The maximum RYA training ratio is 5 students to 1 Instructor.
If you have booked our motor cruiser for your exclusive use then it is possible that we can ‘mix and match’ which courses we run. For example, if two of you want to undertake the Dayskipper Practical course it is possible for another person to spend the full 4 days on board but be working towards the Helmsmans course instead. Additionally if you have children they could be working towards the “Start Motor Cruising” Certificate.
Private courses
We find one popular option is to book our vessel for a private course for you and your friends/family. Over the last few years we’ve had a number of groups book our craft combining some training with a family trip to Poole or Lymington making the most of some of our great hotels. Please call to discuss.
Children on board during training
We are always very keen to have children on board that are training but it’s important that if we have children as part of a group who are training that they are old enough to fully enjoy the training and benefit from it.
Why choose Powerboat Training UK for a Dayskipper Practical course?
Our location and teaching facilities ~ Poole Harbour is a truly amazing teaching location – so much so that the RNLI and the Royal Marines base their training operations here. Our classrooms are well resourced, professional, clean and tidy.
Likewise our base in Lymington at Aquasafe Powerboat School is at Lymington Yacht Haven which like Cobbs Quay is a large marina with a huge range of craft. The Solent offers an outstanding cruising ground with a wide variety of harbours and marinas to enter.
Our Instructors ~ We ensure that our instructors are teaching 100% ‘Best Practice’ and have a process whereby we constantly review their sessions to ensure that you get the most productive experience from your time with us. All teach because they love boating and we work with them to constantly ‘upskill’ their qualifications and experience.
Our history ~ We started the school over twenty years ago and have grown a reputation for delivering on our promises. Our clients range from individuals with their own craft to organisations such as Sunseeker, the RNLI and we were awarded the RYA Training contract by Dorset Police for the London 2012 Olympic events in Weymouth.
We are also very proud to have written the RYA Powerboat Handbook for the RYA and 2014 saw the launch of the RYA Advanced Powerboat Handbook.
Our craft ~ Our main training vessel is ‘True Blue’ a Rodman 1250 with twin 430Hp Volvo Penta engines operating through twin shafts. True Blue is an established charter boat based at Poole Quay Boat Haven and it makes a great training vessel. It is fitted with a considerable amount of electronics and has AIS, dual VHFs, dual radars, an electronic GPS based compass (these are very unusual on smaller craft), navtex and is coded to Cat 2 (60 miles from a Safe Haven).
What is included in the course price? ~ When you undertake your Dayskipper Practical Course with us then the price you pay includes all fuel used, certificates, free use of waterproofs if required (often charged as an extra) and a copy of the RYA Dayskipper Handbook. The price includes VAT too – yet another common extra.
Does the course price represent good value? ~ remember in life you pretty much get what you pay for. We have great facilities in large marinas offering a great all-round experience. Check out the other relevant pages on this website to see what we mean.
Course prices The price quoted in the ‘Key Course Details’ section above is the price per head for 1 person, for 2 persons the per head cost reduces by 2.5% and for three people by 5%. The price shown is inclusive of VAT.
Some of the offers available when buying this course include…..
Special Offer No 1!! Book and pay for your VHF Course at the same time as you book the Dayskipper Practical course and only pay £75 for the VHF course (including course pack). (Usual cost is £100, you also need to pay the RYA Fee which is £60). You can choose whether to undertake the course in the classroom or online. We run VHF Courses every two weeks so fitting you in will never be an issue – we run these courses in Poole and Lymington.
Special Offer No 2!! We also offer the opportunity to book the classroom RYA Dayskipper Theory Course for £350 (usually £395) when booked alongside a Dayskipper Practical course. This is a great course to really further develop your understanding of charts, tides, buoyage and navigation onto the next level after the course.
Updated June 2023
Dayskipper Practical – on our boats - The Course
Your instructor will cover the following topics with you during your time with him/her:
- Safety & preparation for sea
- Boat handling including leaving & coming alongside
- Navigation including use of electronic navigation techniques
- Pilotage & passage planning
- Rules of the road
- Emergency situations including man overboard
Night cruising
- Meteorology
- Collision regulations
Over the four days of this course there is the time to really focus on both boat handling and all aspects of planning and executing passages. Time is spent looking at charts and tides, passage planning, pilotage and subjects such as ‘course to steer’. All aspects of using GPS/chartplotters are covered too and we also introduce the basics of radar. There is plenty of time to address in detail safety from the equipment carried to how to deal with a man overboard situation. We also go out at night and execute a short night passage.
As a guide, day one of the course tends to focus on an initial introduction to the motor cruiser you will be training on. A look at the basics of the engine followed by a detailed review of the life saving appliances on board and the emergency procedures to follow in the event of an incident on board. This is then followed by a concerted focus on developing an understanding of how to the handle the vessel at slow speeds and then in marina situations. There’s a real focus on developing the core skills so that we create a firm foundation of skills to build ability on.
Day two will tend to mix further slow speed handling with new areas such as man overboard and then a look at charts, tides and buoyage.
Time is spent creating pilotage and open water plans ahead of a passage on day three.Day two will also look a bit more at the mechanics of the engine and systems on board and you will be making the engine checks yourselves, getting the craft started etc.
Day three often includes a longer passage which is executed using the plan created the day before. Various electronic methods will be introduced as a means to transit the passage and position fix as you go. The end of day three usually involves a night passage where you get to experience the very real differences involved in entering a port/harbour at night.
Day four gives us the chance to revisit any areas that we need to including of course more slow speed handling or any areas you want to spend more time on.
Once you have reached the standard at which we can award the Dayskipper certificate should you wish you can go on to apply for your ICC from the RYA. The relevant form can be downloaded here which coupled with a photo and a copy of your certificate will get you your licence.
If you are a member of the RYA then your ICC is free else it costs approximately £43. Coincidently joining the RYA costs about the same so we would generally advise that you join then get the ICC free. If you intend travelling abroad shortly after your course and thus require your ICC to be issued quickly we advise that you join the RYA a few weeks before your course and then call the relevant department to try to ensure a quick turnaround for your application my own only took a week.
In contrast to RYA Powerboat Level 2 the RYA Dayskipper Practical certificate cannot be attained via ‘Direct Assessment’. If you want to undertake a direct assessment then you will need to consider the International Certificate of Competence instead (the ‘ICC’).
A further consideration when attending a motor cruising course is where you take it. ‘Tidal’ schools award certificates with a tidal endorsement. This means that the student has learnt in conditions where tides and currents must be considered. Generally speaking if you intend using your boat in coastal waters ensure that you undertake a course with a tidal school. Schools in the Mediterranean generally cannot award tidal certificates.
Dayskipper Practical – on our boats - This course is aimed at
The RYA Dayskipper Practical course appeals to a wide variety of individuals course from those new to motor cruising to those who may have boated for many years and want to improve their skills.
- Those new to boating keen to ensure that as they start boating they are doing it right. The course focuses on ensuring that you develop a really good base understanding of boat handling, navigation and seamanship. After the course you can then bolt on more practical experience to really cement the knowledge gained on the course.
- Those who have boated for a while who want to develop and improve their skills. Typically we find this involves a keenness to develop a better understanding of navigation and the practical application of this knowledge using GPS/Chartplotters and radar. Also the time spent developing boat handling capability is time well spent.
- Those keen to boat overseas and want to achieve their International Certificate of Competence (‘ICC’)[the up to 24m version of the ICC] undertake the Dayskipper Practical course which then allows them to apply for the ICC using a copy of their Dayskipper certificate.
- Those thinking about buying their own craft find that by undertaking the course they become far more educated buyers and therefore tend to be clearer exactly what their requirements are. Also the fact that we operate from two very large marinas gives the opportunity to see up close the variety of craft that can be considered as possible options.
