Boat of the Week: This Military-Style 129-Foot Superyacht Is Really a Luxe Beach House on the Water

Sexy Fish Superyacht has a military exterior but California beach house interior

But that’s Sexy Fish , the rule-breaking, somewhat intimidating 129-footer from Tansu Yachts . Built in 2016, she defines the Turkish yard’s no-frills, form-follows-function design philosophy.

Her profile is unmistakable. Towering bow, squared-off, angular superstructure, blacked-framed pilothouse windows and a multitude of rounded portholes dotted along the hull. Paint some big numbers on the bow, mount a .50-caliber machine gun on the foredeck and she’d be all set for a little border patrol action.

Winner of a 2017 Best of the Best Award from Robb Report, Sexy Fish was the fourth in Tansu’s “mothership” series of head-turning, military-style, 100-foot-plus yachts that has since spawned a whole series of similar-looking vessels still being snapped-up by buyers daring to be different.

Tansu Yacht’s founder, Riza Tansu, says his inspiration came from his early days back in the mid-1990s, converting commercial work boats into luxury yachts. Loving the rugged lines, but not the conversion headaches, Tansu decided to come up with his take on the bold look.

“Military boats are all about form following function. For me a yacht should be as simple and uncomplicated as possible,” Tansu told Robb Report.

Sexy Fish superyacht uses both form and function in the exterior design.

The design of the yacht was meant to combine form with function. When the tenders are removed, the area becomes an open dining area or dance floor.  Courtesy Breed Media/Tansu Yachts

Conceived by Tansu’s in-house team of designers, with Dutch naval architects Diana Yacht Design drawing the hull lines, Sexy Fish measures 128’11” and has a 24-foot beam. Her draft is just over eight feet. She features a rugged steel hull with lightweight aluminum superstructure.

Despite her brawny looks, the yacht’s living spaces are open and breezy, more suited for sunny, open-air Mediterranean cruising. That means a huge rear deck, expansive flybridge deck and spacious bow area filled with lounges, sunpads and recliners.

“I see so many yachts that look like stuffy hotels, filled with couches from your grandmother’s house,” says Tansu. “I wanted deck space and interiors that looked more like a Malibu beach house, where you could wander around barefoot and not be worried about messing up the furniture.”

Simple interior design on Sexy Fish superyacht in the master suite

The master suite does not have oversized windows like some yachts, but the large portholes provide natural light and privacy.  Courtesy Breed Media/Tansu Yachts

That’s why Sexy Fish’s interior is all sleek, wipe-down, white-lacquered paneling, wide-planked light oak floors, free-standing B&B Italia sofas, and soft-gray outdoor lounge pads.

The top deck—Tansu calls it the sky lounge—is like a temple to sun-worshipping. The cool bar area features a roof that powers open at the touch of a button, and huge, cushioned lounging areas beneath a canvas awning.

At anchor, with the twin RIB tenders in the water, the vast back deck becomes a beach club by day, and dance floor by night, with lighting illuminating the stern steps down to the water.

Belowdecks, there’s a full-beam owner’s suite with oversized portholes to flood the cabin with light, plus four other well-appointed guest suites. The informal galley—designed beach house-style, so that guests can grab their own snacks and libations—features a huge, walk-in fridge.

Power comes from twin Caterpillar C32 1,450-hp diesels that deliver a top speed of 16 knots. Throttle back to 12 and Sexy Fish can cruise for 3,500 nautical miles on a single tank.

Active and zero-speed stabilizers and thrusters keep the yacht impressively stable while reducing interior noise, especially at anchor.

“I have a lot of attachment to Sexy Fish because we didn’t have a buyer until the boat was over 80 per cent completed,” says Tansu. “I’d built her the way I wanted and planned to use her as my own yacht. At the time, I was a little disappointed she sold.”

Still owned by her original buyer, Sexy Fish is listed with Fraser for approximately $12.5 million.

There’s Something About Tansu: The Yacht Designer To Watch

Riza Tansu is a man who has enjoyed much success on the busy banks of the Bosporus with his design studio and yard, Tansu Yachts . In the last 12 months, Tansu has launched an impressive four superyachts (do we hear the rumblings of a record here?). Now back in Istanbul after a few busy weeks of travelling, we speak to Tansu for some exclusive insight into what’s behind the success of the company.

tansu yacht design

“Istanbul is one of the most beautiful cities in the world, and the infrastructure here is second to none. It is a privilege to live in this very inspirational place as a designer and superyacht builder.” – Riza Tansu

Tansu is inspired and influenced by simple and honest design, which is evident in every aspect of the yard and the vessels it builds. He attributes the yard’s success to its simplistic approach and unique perspective, filling a niche in the marketplace for those searching for a vessel that is less ostentatious than most and one that shuns the trends of the day. Tansu’s designs, along with naval architecture by Diana Yacht Design, focus on cruising performance and understated luxury – large, expansive deck areas with external galleys and relaxed seating arrangements that take precedence over infinity pools and waterfalls.

tansu yacht design

With this less is more approach, Tansu finds inspiration from his country’s rich traditions, across other industries, and from his childhood. He fondly remembers his father’s Oldsmobile, “I was looking for a sister car for a long time and found one in the States. After 45 years, when I saw the car, I realized how its design made a profound impact on me when I was a kid.” Think minimalist with clean lines without sacrificing exceptional performance and function.

tansu yacht design

The latest string of successful launches includes the 39.3m SEXY FISH (winner of a 2017 Showboats Design Award), 38.4m HIGHLIGHT, 39.1m ESOSH, and 43.7m CYCLONE – the yard’s largest build to date. With a further four yachts in build totalling over 155 meters in cumulative length, there seems to be no stopping this Turkish team and Riza Tansu is confident about the next few years. “I’m very positive about the future of the Turkish superyacht industry; although I can’t offer knowledge of the country’s output figures, on the whole, I work like a lunatic, and I just concentrate on what we’re doing!”

Why we’d choose Tansu

Tansu Yachts has delivered over 22 superyachts in its 21-year history. Based in Istanbul, this boutique yard specializes in the construction of both steel and aluminium yachts, in addition to cold-moulded wood construction while maintaining a small production allowing the yard to focus on producing the highest quality superyachts.

Bayesian: What we know about the superyacht that sank

The Bayesian, which capsized in the early hours of Monday, was an award-winning yacht owned by a company controlled by the wife of tech tycoon Mike Lynch.

The Bayesian, the award-winning superyacht, sank during a tornado off the coast of Sicily in the early hours of Monday.

The body of one person, Recaldo Thomas, a Canadian-Antiguan chef who was working on the boat, has been found, but six tourists - including British tech entrepreneur Mike Lynch and his 18-year-old daughter, Hannah - remain missing.

Mr Lynch's wife, Angela Bacares, was rescued along with 14 others - including Charlotte Golunski, a mother who told la Repubblica she held her one-year-old baby above the waves to save her from drowning.

The girl's father James Emsley also survived, according to Salvo Cocina of Sicily's civil protection agency.

Among those unaccounted for are Jonathan Bloomer, chairman of Morgan Stanley International, and Chris Morvillo, a lawyer at major firm Clifford Chance, Mr Cocina said.

But what do we know about the ship?

The British-flagged 56 metre ship - previously called the Salute - was built in 2008 by Italian shipyard Perini Navi, and refitted in 2020.

Celebrating timeless elegance, its design combines unique styling, cutting-edge technology, and exceptional performance that merges artisan details with innovative features.

dynamic, elegant, and sporty exterior design

The Riva 56’ Rivale’s open yacht design expands the iconic Italian brand ’s fleet, embodying dynamism, elegance, and sportiness. Created by Officina Italiana Design and both the Ferretti Group’s Product Strategy Committee and Engineering Department, this 56-foot masterpiece features large glazed windows, flush portholes, and a sleek aquamarine line that highlights its striking metallic exterior. The use of premium materials – high gloss mahogany, natural teak, stainless steel, and superior leather – ensures every detail is luxurious.

A unique windshield not only protects the cockpit but also completes the aerodynamic profile of the yacht. The cockpit’s main deck lounge offers a spacious sitting area with an L-shaped sofa and teak dining table. This convivial space extends in the front and back to create a seamless flow of elegance and comfort: a large sun pad facing rearwards; and a raised dormeuse in the forward section, shaded by an electro-hydraulically operated bimini top, and framed by a stainless steel and a vintage-inspired warning horn.

high performance on the sea

The bridge is equipped with state-of-the-art control, monitoring, and navigation systems featuring touchscreen displays. Behind the control station, a well-appointed cabin unit includes all guests need with a bar, practical waste collection containers, and storage compartments integrated into the helm seat. From here, the captain controls either the twin 1000hp or 1200hp MAN engines with V-drive propulsion systems. This propels the yacht to cruising speeds of 31 or 34 knots and maximum speeds of 35 or 38 knots — depending on the engine of choice — showcasing excellence in design and performance.

At the stern, the garage houses a Williams 325 tender, protected by a tach in double-shell carbon fiber. A major innovation of the 56’ Rivale is the underwater movement of the swimming platform, with additional steps in the hull providing a convenient stairway for water access.

luxury lounges and cabins below deck

Below deck, guests are treated to an elegant lounge-dinette where mirrored surfaces alternate with varnished mahogany, dark lacquered woods, and dark leather coverings. The interplay of colors and materials is quintessentially Riva, with sofas and ottoman seats upholstered in fabric by Ivano Redaelli, and wall-to-wall carpet by Van Besouw. The gallery, partially hidden by mirrored walls and sliding lacquered surfaces, features abundant storage and a unit with a bar set.

The sleeping quarters include two en-suite cabins, mirroring the luxurious color and material interplay of the lounge. Striking contrasts between white leather headboards and dark leather furnishings create an inviting atmosphere for guests. Soft furnishings by Ivano Redaelli and Van Besouw add to this opulent ambience. A single-bed crew cabin, with separate access from the cockpit, can be replaced by a third guest cabin if desired. The result is a home away from home on the open sea.

Four new build projects underway at Tansu Yachts

Tansu Yachts has revealed that it has four new-build projects under construction at its yard in Istanbul. The Turkish yacht builder discussed the builds during a press conference at the Monaco Yacht Show .

Two builds are in the final stages of construction —39.3 metre Cutlass and 43.7 metre Cyclone . Tansu Yachts collaborated with Diana Yacht Design on _Cutlass, _which will be launched in the spring and will be at next year’s Monaco Yacht Show.

Riza Tansu of Tansu Yachts revealed that Cutlass will feature an “improved hull” in comparison to Bartender , which was delivered by the yard in 2011. “We super tuned it and ended up with a more economic, healthy hull,” he added.

Cutlass will be a similar layout to Bartender but will have internal rather than external stairs to upper deck as well as a large beach club. “We are not trying to put a palace on the water, boats should be like a beach house,” Tansu said.

Tansu explained that he liked to build on spec and use his yachts before selling them so that he can truly get to know them.

“As an industrial designer, you have to try your design every day,” Tansu said. “With yachts it is pretty difficult – it's the owners boat. You have to live on board to understand the owner. I feel I have to sleep on board one season or half season.”

The two other builds — 38.4 metre Le Tre Sorelle and the 39.1 metre Echo-R — are using Tansu Yacht’s newly introduced Tigershark platform. The concept allows clients to put their own stamp on a tested hull with different layout configurations available.

The first new order using the design, 38 metre superyacht Tigershark One , was signed in December 2014 and is due to be deliver in 2016.

Tansu Yachts has its 2011 launched 36.4m superyacht Bartender on display at the Monaco Yacht Show 2015. The explorer yacht won a Neptune trophy at the 2012 ShowBoats International Design awards. Bartender is now for sale with Edmiston and Northrop & Johnson and is asking €7.8 million.
