Medway Yacht Club

Located at Lower Upnor on the banks of the tidal River Medway just down river from Chatham historic dockyard, MYC is only 35 miles from central London and is easily accessible from London, Kent, Sussex or Essex.

The tidal Medway on which the club operates still provides the excellent sailing described by Ufa Fox, perfect for both racing and cruising. The many reaches, bends and creeks provide for a wide variety of courses and for our racing fleets and secluded anchorages for cruisers. Located nine miles from the mouth of the river our positioning provides enough protection to allow sailing in all but the most challenging of weather conditions.

Our location in the south of the Thames estuary gives access to the beautiful, uncrowded and unspoilt east coast with easy short passage to the delightful cruising grounds of the Netherlands, Belgium, France and beyond. The Solent can be reached by a 30 foot family cruiser in around 24 hours.

The traditional clubhouse sits in an elevated position on the northern bank providing south facing panoramic river views from the marquee covered veranda, clubhouse restaurant and bar where members and their guests enjoy excellent fare from the galley and a fine range of beers, wines and spirits served at competitive club prices.

The Club has a full social programme organised both on a club basis and by the classes. Events range from formal black tie occasions such as Commodores Dinner and Burns Night to informal casual get-togethers for supper or trips out. The clubhouse galley and bar are open to members and their guests as well as visiting yachtsmen and yachtswomen.

MYC is a family focused forward thinking club that provides excellent sailing facilities and opportunities for all from the novice to the expert, from youngster to those of more mature years, from dinghy to cruiser or power boat and everything in between, all are welcome.

Recognised by the Royal Yachting Association (RYA) as a training centre, Medway Yacht Club offers regular dinghy, power and cruiser certificated courses. We also run taster sessions, class training and coaching. Most of the training and courses are run by our experienced Chief Instructor.

Examples of courses run at MYC

  • RYA Dinghy Courses
  • RYA Power Boat level 2
  • RYA Safety Boat
  • RYA Day Skipper and Yacht Master Theory

Upnor Sailing Club & why you should join

For a quiet and quant area, the Upnor Sailing Club is a bustling part of this village. Here’s what you need to know about the Upnor Sailing Club and why you should check it out.

Sailing from Upnor

At the end of Lower Upnor, you’ll find the Upnor Sailing Club tucked away along the banks of the Medway River. First started in the 1960’s, this friendly club has developed into an active part of the community.

If you’ve ever wandered through Upnor, or visited Upnor Beach on a sunny day, you would have seen numerous boats along the Medway River. Upnor is a great launching spot and is easily a favourite summertime hobby in the area.

The club organises a cruising programme each year for any members who want to sail with others along the east coast. Some trips even go across the channel for more experienced sailors. The trips are organised by volunteers in the club that work to include boats of all sizes and members of all skill levels.

Upnor Sailing Club facilities

Currently there are 86 sheltered moorings on the Medway close to Chatham Historic Dockyard.

The club website adds that: “We access these from our private pontoon from which we launch dinghies and bring our yachts alongside for loading and unloading. This facility also incorporates a dinghy and tender storage area and two scrubbing docks.”

The sailing clubhouse also has a welcoming clubroom, bar, balcony toilets, showers and a secure car park with storage and workshops.

While many people don’t know about Upnor or its sailing club, it’s situated in a perfect spot to launch along the River Medway.

Getting to the Upnor Sailing Club

When using a Sat Nav, plug in the post code “ME2 4UY” to find the club. It’s located at the very end of Lower Upnor and can be tricky to find the first time.

A good indicator that you’re going in the right direction is going past the Pier pub and the closed down Arethusea Venture Centre in Lower Upnor. There is also a free car park in Lower Upnor , directly in front of the club.

Not only does the sailing club offer the obvious possibility to sailing from Upnor, it’s also has a huge social element.

Throughout the year the club hosts a variety and range of events which are organised and planned by the social committee. These club-wide events include activities like parties, barbecues and even formal dinners. Club events are usually held in the off-season during the winter months when most members are not on cruises. So while you might be busy sailing throughout the summer, the Club still has activities and events throughout the winter to keep you busy.

Recent events included: a new members buffet, a summer BBQ, First Aid Training and an upcoming Christmas dinner party.

Medway Yacht Club

Founded and registered with the Yacht Racing Association in 1880 early members included the Earl of Cavendish, Lord Beresford, marine artist W.L. Wylie and author of adventure books for children A Henty. By 1894 it is reported that the club had 86 members.

1898 saw the start of one-design racing that continues today when MYC successfully answered a challenge laid down by the Sydney Flying Squadron which resulted in MYC winning the Anglo-Australian Shield. The challenge was revived and re-run at Upnor in 1998 and in Sydney in 2001 using replica 1880’s skiffs.

Early meetings were held in Rochester and in 1920 a clubhouse was opened on the Esplanade near Rochester Castle. Currently recognised as a safe haven for all the family to sail, the Club was apparently a riskier place in the 1920’s. An incident in the club accident book records that a member was shot when live rather than blank cartridges were supplied for use in the clubs starting cannon.

Always a forward thinking club, MYC admitted ladies for the first time to the annual dinner held at the Sun Hotel in 1934.

Between the two World Wars, motor-boating became very popular. Whilst normal club activities were suspended during both world wars, 1940 saw at least six Medway Yacht Club boats rescuing troops from Dunkirk, and later serving with the defence forces.

After World War II, it was decided to bring all club activities together and in 1948 the current site at Lower Upnor was acquired.

In 1952 the clubhouse which forms the main part of the facilities seen today was built although this has been extended and improved over the years.

1953 saw MYC received its warrant from the Admiralty allowing members the privilege of wearing our defaced Blue Ensign. Two years later saw Bluebottle, HRH the Duke of Edinburgh’s International Dragon, given to him as a wedding present by Her Majesty the Queen, competing in a special series of races arranged by MYC. Bluebottle’s racing flag was presented to the club and can be found in the clubhouse today.
