Wisp - a newbie with a classic yacht dress and a wisp of history feel..

Wisp pictures by  Cory Silken and Carlo Baroncini

The Dutch shipyard Royal Huisman launched the beautiful  Hoek design with interior styling by Rhoades Young earlier this year. Now Wisp is back from her maiden voyage in Norway with a pack of images and more information for the public.

Royal Huisman and Hoek Design accepted the challenge to develop a gentleman’s sailing yacht with much comfort for long voyages and enough speed to show her stern to other yachts.

Wisp Yacht Royal Huisman

Her cutter rig was built by Royal Huisman’s subsidiary Rondal  in carbon composite. The cutter-rig sail-plan was designed for balance and simple handling while cruising and the possibility of using overlapping genoas for racing, with much thought going into the track positioning and winch sizes to handle the increased loads and speeds during regattas.

The result is an uncluttered expanse of teak decking fore and aft with few obstacles to disturb the sense of harmony. Indeed, throughout the yacht’s exterior woodwork has been rationalized by examining and simplifying every joint and detail to create calming guest areas with plenty of hidden storage and an efficient navigation cockpit. Instead of the more typical stranded wire, reliable stainless steel lifelines linking the deck- mounted stanchions provide non-sailors with an added sense of security and add an elegant, polished look.

Wisp features traditional waterfall margins between the teak decking and the superstructures – a detail requiring much thicker pieces of carefully selected timber to provide a consistent grain and perfect fit and finish.

The custom helm stations and steering wheels represent works of art in their own right. Various options were considered, from traditional all-wood to new wheels in carbon fiber. In the end, the graceful design was chosen with 20 polished stainless steel spokes, rimmed with delicate bead detail, which radiate from a central hub, itself clad with teak that has been lovingly milled and fitted by hand. Also, the detailing of daylight readable control panels and surrounding seating areas were designed to optimize space and present a visual impression of low volume.

Wisp Yacht Royal Huisman

Further deck space has been freed up by placing the Rondal winches for the main halyard, mainsheet and preventer below deck in a separate compartment adjoining the engine room, which can still be quickly accessed from the forward engine room entrance and monitored via CCTV cameras.

To ensure the 6.2m (20ft) owner’s tender blends in with the sweeping sheer of the hull, it is partially recessed into a pocket on the foredeck. Another notable deck feature is the crew cockpit just forward of the mainmast. With a convertible car-style retractable dodger, protective coamings, storage and direct access below deck to the dinette, it provides a secure assembly point within easy reach of the deck equipment while under sail and a relaxing social area when at anchor.

Interior of WISP

Wisp ’s owner wanted a light, airy and calming interior. The owner calls it in one word: „jolly“. Rhoades Young selected a light oak that has stained a soft honey amber to match the owner’s personal taste.

The owners have an own area in the aft of Wisp with an own deckhouse and own entry. But it is also accessible from the main deckhouse over the guest area which is between main deck house and owner’s area. The owner’s area has a full beam bedroom.

Wisp Yacht Interior Royal Huisman

For guests is one cabin with two beds and two double bed cabins onboard. All cabins have an ensuite.

“From an architectural point of view, we created an unusual open-plan interior layout that is designed in layers to reveal itself gradually,” says Jonathan Rhoades. “Below deck, you are lead from space to space and at each destination, the rooms feel resolved and complete. It is only on exploring further that you realize they open onto other spaces until finally all the layers are peeled back to reveal salons and cabins with huge sightlines through the various deck levels linking the interior and exterior.”

Wisp is a magnificent example of revivalist naval architecture by Hoek Design with interior architecture by Rhoades Young Design that fulfills her owner's brief for a supremely comfortable cruising yacht that may also indulge in some 'gentleman's racing'.

Her moderate draft underbody, carbon composite spars from Rondal, EC6 and Carbo-Link hybrid rigging and efficient sail handling systems are enhanced for performance, seaworthiness and ease of handling. The cutter-rig sailplan was designed for balance and simple handling while cruising and the possibility of using overlapping genoas for racing, with much thought going into the track positioning and winch sizes to handle the increased loads and speeds during regattas.

Rhoades Young Design, renowned for their sophisticated yet understated interiors, created a light, airy and calming ambience in which to travel the world - a style the owner summed up in the word 'jolly.' The principle veneer is a light oak that has been stained a soft, honey amber and care was taken to ensure a quiet and continuous flow in the wood's natural grain. This neutral background is contrasted with dark wenge inlays and high-quality fabrics in courageous colours.

A commitment to the owner's pure and simple aesthetic by the designers, combined with Royal Huisman's signature attention to quality construction and seaworthiness, has resulted in a fine gentleman's sailing yacht with ocean-going capability, comfort and performance.

Wisp was delivered to her owner in 2014.

Custom Line Navetta 42

wisp yacht royal huisman

The sea trial was pubblished on Superyacht 45 – spring 2015

A classic design reveals a sublimely elegant sloop-cutter rigged  yacht featuring flowing lines and beautiful overhangs which nearly seem to keep it suspended above  the water. This wonder conceals an array of absolute avant-garde technology. Thrilling under sail but with fuel enough to motor across to the US and return to Europe without ever stopping to refill her tanks.

Royal Huisman Wisp

We haven’t met up with Wisps’s lucky owner – built by Royal Huisman and off the chocks in Holland summer last. Nevertheless we gleaned a little about him from Andre Hoek the project designer who interpreted the owner’s wishes and requests. As Wisp was being launched the owner moved by what he was looking at reportedly exclaimed: “Here’s my home away from home”.

A fitting definition indeed – both delicate and affectionate – perfectly coherent with the sort of sensations this near 50 metre cutter delivers to whoever is admiring her while imagining what an amazing sight she’ll be when sailing with all of her two square kilometres of canvass as she cuts through seas with the kind of majestic elegant motion that only a yacht with those lines can possess.

Yes, quite so since we’re talking about an exquisitely classic sailing ship the lines of which recall those of J-Class yachts initialled by the truly famous like Herreshoff, Nicholson and Burgess who claimed that America Cup races were a show case for the world’s most beautiful yachts.

We’ll be finding out more about this owner as we climb on board. And it couldn’t be otherwise, since he personally spent more than a year working closely not only with Hoek but also with Dick Young and Jonathan Roades and indirectly with another fifteen or so professionals who successfully transformed the owner’s smallest detail and suggestion into tangible reality.

Our first impression as we climbed on deck was that the deck wasn’t meant to be considered solely from a structural view point but that in the case in point it played an all important role in influencing the quality of life on board, above all when at sea.

Compact low coachroofs one in the stern area of the deck and another slightly longer one amidships followed by a small sky light placed immediately forward of the single mast as if to highlight the shape of the covering board which seen from above seems to want to overlap with the horizon.

The surface on which to tread on is so ample and clutter free everywhere on deck that considering the coherence of the design with the tradition of the time we’d be tempted to define it as a flush deck for all intents and purposes.

The sail plan though obviously takes the limelight. The mast head sloop/cutter rig rises to about sixty metres creating a spectacular effect – a towering sight to say the least. Below deck and led by a plan of the layout in hand, we immediately felt that chartering out this yacht even for a day’s momentous sailing had never crossed the owner’s mind at least in the sense we more commonly attribute to the meaning of this term.

On the contrary, since the philosophy seems to head in the opposite direction as the volumes of the interior spaces seem to have been conceived to offer much vital space to few people only.

The main saloon is decidedly emblematic: rather than atomising the substantial cubage of the area available, where cosy convivial, if not intimately private corners have been created with furnishings doubling as side scenes and with small drops and differences tracing virtual boundary lines between differing horizontal planes in the flooring.

Herewith therefore a large saloon above, a study area with desk, while on a lower level a small drawing room and dining area. This is why we envisaged six “passengers” on board of Wisp since we thought of six as being the ideal number considering the size of this large area even if without the slightest sense of promiscuity:

There’s a strong nearly magnetic family feeling, due to its capability to attract, to bring together and to understand. Of course there are real cabins and our attention quickly diverts in that direction namely to where and how the owner has devised his personal quarters. These are astern of amidships in the stern area of the hull. There’s firstly a suite which only by comparing it to the layout of the rest can we understand it is relatively small.

The suite is on four different levels each of which serving a different purpose. Starting from the bottom up, the first level is where the owner’s cabin and bathroom are. The second level which is just one step up from the preceding one is split into a changing room and small living room area, the third which is on the same level as the coaming of the stern coachroof, houses a small study and the fourth now almost at deck level forms a private cockpit furnished with a sofa and armchairs. When this is closed off by see through awnings the atmosphere is the same as that of a winter garden’s.

In the same zone, immediately forward of the owner’s suite, we come to two guest cabins with private bathrooms: to starboard the VIP cabin with double bed; to port a twin. With this in theory at least, ends the more private area in the yacht. Only in theory though because immediately ahead of the vast saloon which we have already mentioned which takes up the whole of the central area amidships and sports a beam of 9.30 metres and before reaching the galley and crew area we come to a spare cabin which would normally be the captain’s, but nevertheless could be assigned if need be to an important couple as it is furnished to the same high standards of the others.

To this end it is worth noting that never, in any case will the furnishing of private areas do without something functional or of their standing to be replaced by something gratuitously pompous. What comes to mind is that if Wisp were a suit, we could compare it to a Laroche one of the ‘fifties or to a Valentino of the ‘sixties, in other words a suit which could teach what having good taste and style is.

We should therefore be overly surprised if so much aesthetical sophistication were not on par with as much technical refinement, specially when we can see proof of how just three people can manage to carry out all of the manoeuvres necessary while sailing like hoisting, reefing down, trimming sails and while handling the yacht in ports or restricted waters.

The key to understand all of this lies in the two transmitting devices the sailors sport hanging around their necks which have joysticks and knobs with which to carry out whatever necessary with extreme precision.

But should you wish to experiment a great thrill mixed with a dose of utter amazement you need to take the helm. Under sail Wisp reveals her true nature and a surprising grit so much so that after tacking a few times at about 16 knots (we’re talking about boat speed), you find yourself heading off the wind instinctively when it fades or heading up closer to it when it gets stronger, and then going about to then gybe back after a pleasant reach on whatever tack forgetting completely you’re at the helm of a 235 ton yacht.

Commissioned in the Spring of 2014, luxury sailing yacht WISP (hull 393) is a majestic 48m (156’) classic sloop, beautifully designed by Hoek , with interior design by Rhoades Young . Built by Royal Huisman , superyacht WISP left Holland for her maiden voyage to the fjords of the breath-taking Norway yacht charter destination, before entering the Western Mediterranean for the remaining Summer 2014.

Luxury yacht Wisp, a 48m (156ft) classic sloop with a performance that belies her traditional lines, is a magnificent example of revivalist naval architecture from the drawing board of Hoek Design with interior architecture by Rhoades Young Design. Fulfilling the brief as a supremely comfortable cruising yacht more than capable to provide the pleasures of some ‘gentleman’s racing’ on occasion she presented an exciting challenge for the designers and shipyard alike.

The client whilst satisfied to cruise at a leisurely pace, was looking for a decent turn of speed without sailing on the edge. Moreover, as he plans to make long passages he expected the same high level of comfort – both inside and on deck – he had enjoyed on various yachts; and with meticulous attention to detail, he was involved in every aspect of the design and construction of what has become his ‘home away from home’.

In terms of hull design, the Hoek Design team has revitalized the style and grace of the classic sailing yachts of yesteryear, whilst paying homage to the needs of today’s modern lifestyle on board. Features developed by the team, such as the owner’s aft cockpit, provide a degree of privacy and amenity. Although not typical of the original design period, they help to marry echoes from the past with a thoroughly modern list of creature comforts for today’s expectant guest. The talented Dutch firm of naval architects was tasked with developing a yacht that would sail very well without excessive heel; hence Wisp’s added form stability, Alustar aluminium hull and spoon bow for a gentler ride.

Her cutter rig, moderate draft underbody, carbon composite spars from Rondal, EC6 and Carbo-Link hybrid rigging and efficient sail handling systems are all enhanced for performance, seaworthiness and ease of handling. The cutter-rig sailplan was designed for balance and simple handling while cruising and the possibility of using overlapping genoas for racing, with much thought going into the track positioning and winch sizes to handle the increased loads and speeds during regattas.

A close collaboration between the Hoek Design office and Rhoades Young Design ensured consistency between the exterior and interior styling details, which were made a reality by Royal Huisman. The deck design reveals a clean and contemporary layout that still respects the classic styling of the striking sheer, spoon bow, traditional counter stern and teak clad low-profile deckhouses.

The result is an uncluttered expanse of teak decking fore and aft with few obstacles to disturb the sense of harmony. Indeed, throughout the yacht the exterior woodwork has been rationalised by examining and simplifying every joint and detail to create calming guest areas with plenty of hidden storage and an efficient navigation cockpit. Instead of the more typical stranded wire, solid stainless steel lifelines linking the deckmounted stanchions provide non-sailors an added sense of security and add an elegant, polished look.

Super yacht Wisp features traditional waterfal l margins between the teak decking and the superstructures – a detail requiring much thicker pieces of carefully selected timber to provide a consistent grain and perfect fit and finish.

The custom helm stations and steering wheels represent works of art in their own right. Various options were considered, from traditional all-wood to modern wheels in carbon fibre. In the end, a graceful design was chosen with 20 polished stainless steel spokes, rimmed with a delicate bead detail, which radiate from a central hub, itself clad with teak that has been lovingly milled and fitted by hand. In addition, the detailing of day light readable control panels and surrounding seating areas were designed to optimise space and present a visual impression of low volume.

Another notable deck feature is the crew cockpit just forward of the main mast. With a convertible car-style retractable dodger, protective coamings, storage and direct access below deck to the dinette, it provides a secure assembly point within easy reach of the deck equipment while under sail and a relaxing social area when at anchor.

Despite the timeless simplicity of the deck design and superstructures, trademark Royal Huisman detailing abounds, such as the louvered ventilation grilles made of veneer-clad carbon fibre on the sides of the deckhouses. First introduced on charter yacht Meteor in 2007, the advantage of carbon over aluminium is that it allows for thinner profiles to optimise the airflow around and through the louvers when given a fixed perimeter dimension. These smaller grilles can be elegantly sized to harmonise with the softly arched deckhouse windows.

The hull shape provided ample room for Rhoades Young Design, renowned for their sophisticated yet understated yacht interiors, to work their magic in creating grand accommodations for six guests in three en-suite cabins and a spacious owner’s suite. The brief was for a light, airy and calming ambience in which to travel the world – a style the owner summed up in the word ‘jolly’ – and this kick-started the process for Rhoades Young to define an interior design that reflected the classic grace of Wisp yacht’s exterior.

To achieve a relaxed, home away from home feel, the designers selected as the principle material a light oak that has been stained a soft, honey amber to perfectly match the owner’s personal tastes. Care was taken to ensure a quiet and continuous flow in the wood’s natural grain so as to ensure a visually pleasing calmness to the interior. In the same manner, the overheads – typically either paneled or clad in leather – have been reinterpreted as simple, unembellished frames with relaxed, linen inserts.

This neutral background is contrasted with dark wenge inlays and fabrics of the highest quality in courageous colours that range from fresh, leafy greens to rich, duck egg blues and burnt oranges, punctuated with brightly coloured table lamps that have been converted from Murano glass vases. Beautiful handmade carpeting provides the casual charm of Japanese Tatami matting with a softness that only pure wool can achieve.

“From an architectural point of view, we created an unusual open-plan interior layout that is designed in layers to reveal itself gradually,” says Jonathan Rhoades. “Below deck you are lead from space to space and at each destination the rooms feel resolved and complete. It is only on exploring further that you realise they open onto other spaces, until finally all the layers are peeled back to reveal salons and cabins with huge sightlines through the various deck levels linking the interior and exterior.”

The owner’s suite is a perfect example of this layering effect. The full-beam cabin has various Japanese shoji screens to bring in a gentle, suffused light into the room. Sliding aside the double doors on the portside reveals a generous bathroom with basins and bath of light green Costa Smeralda marble.

The space develops further when the curved aft doors are slid into their pockets to reveal a charming rotunda with a domed ceiling that leads to the owner’s library on the portside and walk-in wardrobe to starboard.

Flowing aft a sweeping staircase raises the eye to the owner’s aft deckhouse that connects to their private cockpit, which is trimmed with two fixed captain’s chairs integrated into the teak surrounds of the cockpit seating. As a whole, the owner’s suite is a fantastically light and airy retreat that maintains the flexibility of distinct areas for working, relaxing and sleeping.

Hoek Design also worked closely with Rhoades Young Design and Royal Huisman to fine-tune aspects of the exterior styling. They collaborated, for example, on workshop models of the “styled to order” boom to produce one of the most elegant and lightest looking in-boom furling spars on any sailing superyacht.

Wisp superyacht - Exterior - Photo by Cory Silken

Together with the shipyard, they also developed customised up lighting for the deckhouses, rig and bulwarks to create a gentle halo that highlights the outline of the yacht at anchor, as well the fine marquetry to the boom crutch and cockpit tables. Collaboration and attention to detail has been key to the success of Wisp superyacht and it is clear that the more one looks the more one will see.

Aware that a happy crew makes for a happy boat, the owner was equally anxious that the crew accommodation and workspaces are both comfortable and user-friendly.

So the well-appointed crew cabins all have large portholes, whilst the dual purpose forward cabin appointed for the captain’s use is finished to the same high quality as the guest areas and could easily serve as an additional guest cabin with the added convenience of discretely placed instruments to monitor wind, depth and heading.

The engine and control room are not typical for a sailing yacht of this length as the owner requested a full-height engine room with maximised access to machinery. A separate sound-proofed and air-conditioned control room provides a comfortable and efficient working environment for the chief engineer. It also locates the electronics in a dedicated and properly ventilated space away from the guest areas and the disguised navigation station in the deckhouse, which is used primarily for route planning.

The engine room is every yacht’s beating heart. Here Royal Huisman has turned surgical precision into an art form by designing and engineering the space to the highest standards – and if this cannot be seen by the casual observer, it certainly cannot be heard thanks to Huisman’s famed attention to suppressing noise and vibration. Equipment such as the Hamann black water treatment system that uses micro flotation with ultraviolet light disinfection is now standard on Royal Huisman yachts, but on special request from the owner’s team the Heinen & Hopman Air-Conditioning unit is more powerful than in conventional specifications. Special focus was given to the environmental impact of the vessel by installing exhaust gas scrubbers and soot burners to ensure clean air emissions.

It has been an absolute pleasure to be part of the Huisman family, and a dynamic and focused project team,” wrote the owner’s representative, following delivery of the yacht. “Together we have exceeded the expectations of the client with exceptional standards and we can all be duly proud of the beautiful vessel Wisp. “

Royal Huisman launches 48m superyacht Wisp

Royal Huisman has announced that hull #393, a classic 48m sloop which now goes by the name of Wisp , has been launched and her carbon composite Rondal mast stepped in the seaport of Harlingen on Holland’s northern coast.

The 48m (156ft) classic sloop is a fine example of revival naval architecture by Hoek Design, with her raked bow and elegant sheer line and her cutter rig and efficient sail handling systems. The owner’s brief was for a boat that would perform well without excessive heel, hence her relatively beamy hull and spoon bow for a more gentle ride. She has a stained oak and wengé interior by Rhoades Young, which takes advantage of the generous hull volume to create voluminous spaces. There is a spacious full beam-master suite and extensive accommodation for both guests and crew.

' Wisp is a shining example of how a modern sailing yacht can still impart a sense of Corinthian spirit,' says Alice Huisman. 'Her quality design and construction provides ocean-going capability, comfort and performance.' Nigel Ingram of MCM, acting as the owner’s representative, said 'It has been a challenge to meet the owner’s high expectations, but the successful result is thanks to hard work by all concerned. The working relationship with the yard has been enjoyable and the quality of the yacht speaks for itself. We look forward to further developing the relationship with Royal Huisman over future projects.'

Wisp 's sea trials and further crew training will take place in the next weeks prior to delivery to her owner later this spring. In the meantime, Royal Huisman ’s construction and Huisfit halls are focused on various highly distinctive projects, including three new build yachts ranging in size from just under 40m up to 52m in length overall.
