A yacht (pronounced "yot") is a type of boat which is mainly used for recreation. [1] It usually has a cabin , so it does not need to return to the harbour overnight. Originally, yachts were sailing-boats , but now there are also motor yachts. The name comes from the Dutch word jachtschip , which originally meant hunting-boat or fast boat . Yachts have a fixed keel .

yacht kid define

A yacht can vary in size from about 20 feet (6 metres) to 200 feet (60 metres) or more. [2]

Most privately owned yachts fall in the range of about 7 metres (23 ft)-14 metres (46 ft); the cost of building and keeping a yacht rises quickly as length increases. In the United States, sailors tend to refer to smaller yachts as sailboats , while referring to the general sport of sailing as yachting. In sailboat racing, a yacht is any sailing vessel taking part in a race.

Discovering What Defines a Yacht: History, Features, and Classifications

Understanding what defines a yacht goes beyond just size and luxury. In this article, we will explore the definition of a yacht, trace its rich history, highlight the key features that make these vessels unique, and delve into the various yacht classifications. Whether you’re a seasoned yacht enthusiast or new to the world of yachting, this comprehensive guide will provide valuable insights. Let’s set sail into the fascinating world of yachts.

Definition of a Yacht

Understanding what defines a yacht involves more than just its size or luxurious appeal. A yacht is a vessel used primarily for leisure, cruising, or racing. Typically, yachts are larger than other recreational boats, often exceeding 33 feet (10 meters) in length, which is a key factor when a boat is considered a yacht . The main distinction lies in their purpose and design. Yachts are crafted for comfort, performance, and aesthetic appeal, often featuring high-end materials and state-of-the-art technology.

What classifies a yacht can vary, but common criteria include its size, usage, and amenities. Unlike smaller boats, yachts are equipped with sophisticated navigation systems, luxurious cabins, and entertainment facilities. They are built to offer a smooth and enjoyable experience on the water, whether for short day trips or extended voyages. Some models of yachts are designed for specific activities, such as sailing yachts, which rely on wind power, and motor yachts, which are powered by engines.

History of Yachts

The history of yachts provides a fascinating insight into what defines a yacht today. The term “yacht” is derived from the Dutch word “jacht,” which means “hunt.” In the 17th century, the Dutch navy used small, fast ships called “jachts” to chase pirates and other criminals. These vessels were later adopted by wealthy merchants and aristocrats for private leisure and transport, marking the beginning of yachts as symbols of luxury and status.

Throughout the centuries, the concept of what classifies a yacht has evolved. In the 19th century, yachting became a popular sport among the elite, with events like the America’s Cup showcasing the prowess of various models of yachts . Technological advancements in the 20th century further transformed yachts, introducing engines and modern navigation systems, expanding their range and functionality. This era also saw the rise of mega yachts and superyachts, equipped with opulent amenities, which continue to redefine what defines a yacht in contemporary times.

Today, the yachting industry is a thriving global market, with innovative designs and sustainable practices shaping the future of these remarkable vessels. The history of yachts reflects a journey of technological innovation, cultural significance, and the ever-evolving definition of luxury on the water.

  • Outdoor Living Spaces : Yachts often feature expansive outdoor areas, including sun decks, swimming platforms, and alfresco dining spaces. These outdoor amenities are essential parts of what defines a yacht , offering an unparalleled experience at sea.
  • Amenities and Toys : High-end yachts come equipped with a range of amenities such as jacuzzis, gyms, and even helipads. Additionally, many yachts carry water toys like jet skis, diving equipment, and tender boats, enhancing the leisure aspect of yachting.

Yacht Classifications

To fully grasp what defines a yacht , it’s important to understand the various classifications within the yachting world. Yachts are categorized based on their size, propulsion methods, and intended use, helping to clarify what classifies a yacht .

Facts About Boats

If you have ever been on a boat you already know how much fun it is.

Boats have been around for thousands of years and play an important role in our lives.

We depend on these “water-vehicles” for many things.

Read on to discover all about boats.

Boat-facts-1

We will be exploring the history of the boat, the different types of boats and so much more.

So grab your lifejacket and lets dive right in.

Quick Navigation

The History of Boats

Believe it or not, the first known boat dates back around 8,000 years ago.

Although boats have been around a long time, the Ancient Egyptians were the first to be credited for it.

They made them from the papyrus plant. These boats were long and thin and were used for short trips or fishing along the Nile.

As time went on, the Egyptians became more knowledgeable about the construction of boats.

In fact, these early people learned how to make many different types of these water-vehicles.

Wooden Boats:  these boats were made from the acacia tree and also from cedar they imported from Lebanon.

The Egyptians then added a sail to make traveling faster and easier.

Cargo Ships: As time went on, they learned how to construct bigger boats. These were so sturdy they could hold 500 tons of rocks!

Funeral Boats : these small model boats were used in funerals.

The boat would be buried with a person to help carry them to the afterlife. Some Pharaohs actually had full-size boats buried with them in their tombs.

Ponder This:  the early Egyptians didn’t have any nails. How did they keep their boats from falling apart? Find the answer in More Freaky Factoids.

It’s All About the Buoyancy

We know that boats float, but did you ever wonder how it happens?

The science behind this wonder is really quite simple. It’s called, Buoyancy.

Buoyancy is an invisible upward force. This force goes to work when an object is placed in the water (or any liquid).

If the object is very dense (like a stone) then the force cannot hold it up and it sinks.

The object must be less dense than the water.

When people first started making boats, they realized they needed to hollow them out.

This makes them less dense and allows the water to exert enough force to keep it afloat.

Ponder This:  which boat do you think will move faster, a flat-bottom or a v-shaped bottom?

Types of Boats

Since humans learned how to navigate through the water, they began to build many types of boats. Read on to see how many different boats we use today.

  • Cargo ships
  • Cruise ships
  • Motor boats

Ponder This:  a megayacht is a type of luxury boat owned by a person or even a company. These boats can reach tremendous lengths. How long do you think the biggest megayacht is?

What NOT to Do On a Boat

Since people don’t float all that well, there are some things you should never do on a boat. Check out our safety rules for fun boating.

  • Lean over the side as far as you can. This includes having someone hold onto your ankles so you can touch the water.
  • Use your Nana’s underwear as a sail. She won’t be happy.
  • Spit into the wind as you are zooming along.
  • Yell, “man overboard” while flailing your arms with a shocked look on your face.
  • Don’t yell “shark” either.
  • Do cartwheels
  • Rock back and forth as hard as you can, no matter how much your sister screams. It’s not a carnival ride.

Ponder This:  what is the one thing you should ALWAYS do in a boat?

More Freaky Factoids

We haven’t floated over all the fun just yet. Here are the answers to your ponder these questions and more freaky facts. Check it out.

Boat Facts for Kids

  • The back part of a boat is called, the stern?
  • The front of the boat is a bow?
  • The tall pole on a sailboat is called, the mast?
  • The body of a boat is the hull?
  • The right, forward-facing side of a boat is called starboard?
  • The left side of a boat is the port?
  • The person in charge of the boat is called, Captain?
  • You should always wear a lifejacket in a boat? Even if you are a great swimmer,
  • Lifejacket are specially designed vests will keep you afloat.
  • The Egyptians used short planks in the construction of their early boats? These were hooked together then tied tightly with ropes.
  • A V-shaped bottom boat will move faster than a flat-bottomed? This is because a flat surface has more contact with the water. This creates more drag on the boat, which makes it slow and harder to move.
  • Megayachts can reach lengths of 150 meters long (492 feet)?

Now that you have learned all these fascinating facts, you can float over to your friends and family to share your new-found knowledge.

Yacht

The Yacht – The Meaning and the Origin of the Word

In my language there are a few words for a floating object, or a vessel. According to the size and the purpose of the vessel, those words could be translated as “dinghy”, “yacht”, “boat” or “ship”. Some types of vessels have international names, for example “catamaran” or “hovercraft”.

What Does Yacht Mean?

However, when you say “ yacht” in my language, everyone know exactly what it is about. The word “yacht”, unlike other terms, has certain connotations. It always links with something classy, fancy, wealthy, elegant, and even glamorous.

For example, if you say that you have spent a week aboard a sailing boat , the recations of people will be more or less neutral. On the other hand, if you say that your week aboard a yacht was excellent, many people will become jealous. They will imagine you in a scene from a James Bond movie : aboard a massive white yacht in Monte Carlo , having a cold martini (shaken, not stirred)…

I wanted to share with you this language introduction because I found an interesting story about the word “yacht” and its origin. The word “yacht” became an English and an international term after an event that happened a long time ago.

How Do You Spell ‘Yacht’?

yacht

This word comes from the Dutch word “jacht”, which means “hunt”. Furthermore, “ j achtschepen” was the name for narrow, light and very fast sailing boats that the Dutchmen were using for intercepting larger and slower boats and ships.

One of the ‘hunters’ was given as a present to the British king Charles II . In His Majesty’s free time this vessel was not used for intercepting. Instead, was using it for fun. That is why the word “yacht” eventually became the term for vessels/boats made for pleasure.

I would highly appreciate comments from the native speakers of the  English and Dutch languages. Especially since I am not one of them. No matter whether this story is true or not, it still sounds interesting to me.

I wish you a calm sea, a fine wind and a strong mast!

' src=

I looked up the origin of the word yacht, and it said it is a mid 16th century, Early Modern Dutch word from ‘jaght,’ from ‘jaghtschip’ meaning “fast pirate ship,” from ‘jaght’ which means “hunting” + ‘schip’ meaning “ship”.

I like the story of King Charles. It makes sense that that is why a yacht has the definite aura of wealth and pleasure!

' src=

Almost but not 100%. Actually the verb ‘jagen’ to hunt goes back to middle high German,i.e. Deutsch not Dutch, and before that it was ‘jagon’ in lower high German. But it seems that it all started with Greek and travelled North.

' src=

I guess that mid 16th century, the Dutch word jaght or jaghtschip was the word that got picked up. Not the earlier middle high German word where it came from.

Today it is jacht in Dutch, meaning hunting and it also the word for a luxury sailing boat.

In German Jagd is the word for hunt. Germans use the Dutch or English Jacht or Yacht for the boat.

' src=

Did the Germans design the original schooners? I think not! Since some Netherlanders speak a form of the Deutschland language, this word is shared (jacht/Dutch—jagd/German: meaning to hunt). It was the Dutch (Netherlanders) who designed the “flyut” or flute sailing ships, l-o-n-g before any British ever thought of such a ship—and—any German. The schooner grew out of the basic designs of the Dutch flute sailing ship (known for it’s speed). The Dutch economy relied heavily on trade and shipping, and were, thus, cutting edge innovators in ship building. Their engineering skills, was and is, plainly seen in their dike system, as well.

' src=

My father built a beautiful wooden replica of the”yacht” referred by the author (“Yacht Mary”) which was a present from the city of Amsterdam to King Charles II of England in 1660. They wrecked the ship a few years later (already too much partying on yachts, perhaps?)

I noticed the plaque that came with the model ship spelled the name as “Yatch” Mary. First, I thought, maybe, it was old English or Dutch spelling but it looks like it was just an error.

In my head yogurt used to be spelled yoghurt and yacht used to be spelled yaught. Am I completely mis-remembering?

' src=

Dear Margaret, you are quite right for the spelling of the word yogurt that used to be, and sometimes still is, spelled with its old spelling yoghurt. However, there are no traces of the word yacht to have ever been spelled as yaught, but it would be best to take an etymology expert’s word for it.

WEATHER ALERT

17 warnings and 119 advisories in effect for 23 regions in the area

Body of british tech magnate mike lynch is among those recovered from yacht wreckage, officials say.

Divers searching the wreck of the superyacht Bayesian that sank off Sicily on Monday recovered a fifth body on Thursday and continued to search for one more as investigators sought to learn why the vessel sank so quickly. (AP Photo/Salvatore Cavalli)

PORTICELLO – The Italian coast guard said Thursday the body of British tech magnate Mike Lynch is among those recovered off the coast of Sicily from the wreckage of a superyacht whose builders had called unsinkable.

One woman remains missing. She has not been identified, but Hannah Lynch, Lynch's 18-year-old daughter, is reportedly unaccounted for . The family had been celebrating his recent acquittal on fraud charges with the people who defended him at trial in the United States.

Recommended Videos

Five others were recovered by rescue crews following Monday's tragedy.

The Bayesian, a 56-meter (184-foot) British-flagged yacht, went down in a storm early Monday as it was moored about a kilometer (half a mile) offshore. Civil protection officials said they believe the ship was struck by a tornado over the water, known as a waterspout , and sank quickly.

Termini Imerese Public Prosecutor’s Office investigators were collecting evidence for a criminal investigation, which they opened immediately after the tragedy despite no formal suspects having been publicly identified.

The chief executive of The Italian Sea Group, which owns the Bayesian's manufacturer, told the AP in an interview on Thursday that superyachts like these are “designed to be unsinkable."

“And it is unsinkable not only because it is designed in this way, but also because it is a sailing ship and sailing ships are the safest ever,” CEO Giovanni Costantino said.

Costantino added that “obviously they must not hit the rocks violently, discarding the hull, and they must not take in water,” suggesting the second possibility was the most likely in this case.

Costantino also noted that sailing ships require “a greater competence” to be guided compared with motor boats.

Investigators are now looking at why the Bayesian, built in 2008 by Italian shipyard Perini Navi, sank while a nearby sailboat remained largely unscathed . Fifteen of the 22 people aboard survived by escaping in a lifeboat, including a mother who reported holding her 1-year-old baby over the waves to save her. They were rescued by the sailboat Sir Robert Baden Powell.

The sailboat's captain, Karsten Borner, said his craft sustained minimal damage — the frame of a sun awning broke — even with winds that he estimated had reached 12 on the Beaufort wind scale, the highest hurricane-strength force on the scale.

He said he had remained anchored with his engines running to try to maintain the ship’s position as the forecast storm rolled in.

“Another possibility is to heave anchor before the storm and to run downwind at open sea,” Borner said in a text message. But he said that might not have been possible for the Bayesian, given its 75-meter (246-foot) tall mast.

“If there was a stability problem, caused by the extremely tall mast, it would not have been better at open sea,” he said.

Yachts like the Bayesian are required to have watertight compartments that are specifically designed to prevent a rapid, catastrophic sinking even when some parts fill with water.

Lynch is the only person confirmed dead; the other bodies have not been formally identified by the Italian coast guard.

Besides Hannah Lynch, those missing are Christopher Morvillo, one of Lynch’s U.S. lawyers, and his wife, Neda; Jonathan Bloomer, chairman of Morgan Stanley’s London-based investment banking subsidiary, and his wife, Judy.

The body of chef Recaldo Thomas was the first to be recovered , on Monday. His death was confirmed by his family.

Friends of Thomas, best known as “Rick,” paid tribute to him on Thursday at a favorite bar in the Caribbean Island of Antigua. Cooking for Lynch was supposed to be one of Thomas' last jobs before retiring, his cousin, David Isaac, told the AP.

Divers have struggled to find the bodies in the yacht’s hull on the seabed 50 meters (164 feet) underwater.

“We would need a crystal ball to know when we'll be able to find the next body," said Luca Cari, spokesperson for the fire rescue service.

“It's very difficult to move inside the wreckage. Moving just one meter can take up to 24 hours,” Cari said.

Sailing facts for kids

Hro 20100105 2075802670

Sailing is the craft of controlling a boat that uses the force of the wind as a source of movement. Sailing boats were very important to move cargo and people . Starting at the end of the 19th century they were gradually replaced by the boats that used steam to generate motion. Today, sailing is a hobby some people have. In some regions of the world, sailing vessels still keep their importance. Many military forces also have sailing vessels for the purpose of training.

Sailing is also a competitive sport. It is one of the sports in the Olympic Games .

Aerodynamic force components for two points of sail. Left-hand boat : Down wind with detached airflow like a parachute — predominant drag component propels the boat with little heeling moment. Right-hand boat : Up wind (close-hauled) with attached airflow like a wing —predominant lift component both propels the boat and contributes to heel.

Sail angles of attack and resulting flow patterns

Sail angles of attack (α) and resulting (idealized) flow patterns for attached flow, maximum lift, and stalled for a hypothetical sail. The stagnation streamlines (red) delineate air passing to the leeward side (top) from that passing to the windward (bottom) side of the sail.

Five bodies found inside superyacht that sank off Sicily

Divers recovered four bodies Wednesday from inside a  superyacht that sank in a sudden storm off Sicily , Salvatore Cocina, director of the island’s Civil Protection Agency, confirmed to NBC News.

Cocina later confirmed to Sky News that a fifth body had been found and was being brought to shore. One passenger remains missing.

The identities of the bodies were not immediately released. Their recovery follows a dayslong search in the deep waters off the Italian coast where  British tech tycoon Mike Lynch  and several others were believed to be trapped in the hull. Fifteen of the 22 people aboard survived.

The rest had been missing since early Monday, when  the Bayesian was caught in the storm  while anchored off the coast of Porticello, a village near the Sicilian capital city of Palermo.

The body of the ship’s cook, identified as Canadian-Antiguan national Recaldo Thomas, was recovered Monday.

On Wednesday, NBC News witnessed what appeared to be at least three body bags being lifted from fire department boats after they pulled into port at Porticello. It was unclear whose bodies they were. Some were later transferred to ambulances and driven away from the dock.

Lynch’s 18-year-old daughter, Hannah; Morgan Stanley International Chairman Jonathan Bloomer and his wife Judy; and Clifford Chance lawyer Chris Morvillo and his wife Neda, are also missing.

Bayesian yacht accident in Sicily

The Bayesian is owned by a firm linked to Lynch’s wife, Angela Bacares, who was among the survivors rescued by a nearby vessel after getting into a lifeboat.

Built by Italian shipbuilder Perini Navi in 2008, the U.K.-registered yacht could carry 12 guests and a crew of up to 10, according to online specialist boating sites. Its nearly 250-foot mast is the tallest aluminum sailing mast in the world, according to CharterWorld Luxury Yacht Charters.

Regularly described in U.K. media as “Britain’s Bill Gates,” Lynch was  acquitted of fraud by a San Francisco jury  earlier this year, stemming from the 2011 sale of his software company Autonomy to Hewlett-Packard for $11 billion.

The Mediterranean sailing vacation was designed to be a celebration for Lynch, who brought Bloomer, who testified in his defense, and Morvillo, one of his U.S. lawyers, on the trip.

Lynch’s co-defendant Stephen Chamberlain was not aboard the Bayesian, but in what appears to be a tragic coincidence, a  car struck and killed  Chamberlain on Saturday as he was jogging in a village about 68 miles north of London, local police said.

This story first appeared on NBCNews.com . Claudio Lavanga and Claudia Rizzo reported from Porticello. Henry Austin reported from London.

Claudia Rizzo is an Italy-based journalist.

Henry Austin is a London-based editor and reporter for NBC News Digital.

Body of British tech magnate Mike Lynch is among those recovered from yacht wreckage, officials say

AP logo

PORTICELLO, Sicily -- The Italian coast guard said Thursday the body of British tech magnate Mike Lynch is among those recovered off the coast of Sicily from the wreckage of a superyacht whose builders had called unsinkable.

One woman remains missing. She has not been identified, but Hannah Lynch, Lynch's 18-year-old daughter, is reportedly unaccounted for. The family had been celebrating his recent acquittal on fraud charges with the people who defended him at trial in the United States.

Five others were recovered by rescue crews following Monday's tragedy.

The Bayesian, a 56-meter (184-foot) British-flagged yacht, went down in a storm early Monday as it was moored about a kilometer (half a mile) offshore. Civil protection officials said they believe the ship was struck by a tornado over the water, known as a waterspout, and sank quickly.

Termini Imerese Public Prosecutor's Office investigators were collecting evidence for a criminal investigation, which they opened immediately after the tragedy despite no formal suspects having been publicly identified.

The chief executive of The Italian Sea Group, which owns the Bayesian's manufacturer, told AP in an interview on Thursday that superyachts like these are "designed to be unsinkable."

"And it is unsinkable not only because it is designed in this way, but also because it is a sailing ship and sailing ships are the safest ever," CEO Giovanni Costantino said.

Costantino added that "obviously they must not hit the rocks violently, discarding the hull, and they must not take in water," suggesting the second possibility was the most likely in this case.

yacht kid define

Investigators are now looking at why the Bayesian, built in 2008 by Italian shipyard Perini Navi, sank while a nearby sailboat remained largely unscathed. Fifteen of the 22 people aboard survived by escaping in a lifeboat, including a mother who reported holding her 1-year-old baby over the waves to save her. They were rescued by the sailboat Sir Robert Baden Powell.

The sailboat's captain, Karsten Borner, said his craft sustained minimal damage - the frame of a sun awning broke - even with winds that he estimated had reached 12 on the Beaufort wind scale, the highest hurricane-strength force on the scale.

He said he had remained anchored with his engines running to try to maintain the ship's position as the forecast storm rolled in.

"Another possibility is to heave anchor before the storm and to run downwind at open sea," Borner said in a text message. But he said that might not have been possible for the Bayesian, given its 75-meter (246-foot) tall mast.

"If there was a stability problem, caused by the extremely tall mast, it would not have been better at open sea," he said.

Yachts like the Bayesian are required to have watertight compartments that are specifically designed to prevent a rapid, catastrophic sinking even when some parts fill with water.

Lynch is the only person confirmed dead; the other bodies have not been formally identified by the Italian coast guard.

Besides Hannah Lynch, those missing are Christopher Morvillo, one of Lynch's U.S. lawyers, and his wife, Neda; Jonathan Bloomer, chairman of Morgan Stanley's London-based investment banking subsidiary, and his wife, Judy.

The body of chef Recaldo Thomas was the first to be recovered, on Monday. His death was confirmed by his family.

Divers have struggled to find the bodies in the yacht's hull on the seabed 50 meters (164 feet) underwater.

"We would need a crystal ball to know when we'll be able to find the next body," said Luca Cari, spokesperson for the fire rescue service.

"It's very difficult to move inside the wreckage. Moving just one meter can take up to 24 hours," Cari said.

Mike Lynch ’s legacy “should be celebrated” a friend has said, following his death.

The body of the technology tycoon has been recovered after a luxury yacht sank off the coast of Sicily earlier this week.

His 18-year-old daughter reportedly remains missing.

After news of Lynch’s death was confirmed, his friend Brent Hoberman described him as “a titan and a figurehead”.

“We were all hoping for a miracle,” Mr Hoberman told Sky News.

“It is important - now his passing is confirmed - to think about his legacy... It’s important that his legacy is celebrated.”

British tech magnate Mike Lynch, 2 US citizens among missing after luxury yacht sinks off Sicily

15 people were rescued and one body believed to be the cook was found near the wreck, but six others were unaccounted for and believed inside the hull, by andrea rosa and nicole winfield | the associated press • published august 19, 2024 • updated on august 19, 2024 at 3:21 pm.

British tech magnate Mike Lynch and five other people were missing after their luxury sailing yacht sank during a freak storm off Sicily early Monday, Italy’s civil protection and authorities said. Lynch’s wife and 14 other people survived.

Lynch, who was  acquitted in June  in a big U.S. fraud trial, was among six people who remain unaccounted for after their chartered sailboat sank off Porticello, when a tornado over the water known as a waterspout struck the area overnight, said Salvo Cocina of Sicily’s civil protection agency.

📺 Los Angeles news 24/7: Watch NBC4 free wherever you are

One body was recovered, and police divers spent the day trying to reach the hull of the ship, which was resting at a depth of 50 meters (163 feet) off Porticello where it had been anchored, rescue authorities said. They returned to the site after 10 p.m. to see if it would be possible to search through the night, when weather conditions were expected to worsen, said Luca Cari, spokesman of the fire rescue service.

It had a crew of 10 people and 12 passengers, the Italian coast guard said. A sudden fierce storm had battered the area overnight, and struck the place precisely where the 56-meter (184-foot) British-flagged Bayesian had been moored.

“They were in the wrong place at the wrong time,” said Cocina, noting that another superyacht nearby wasn't as badly damaged and helped rescue some of the 15 survivors, who included Lynch's wife Angela Bacares.

The Bayesian was notable for its single 75-meter (246-feet) mast — one of the world’s tallest made of aluminum and which was lit up at night, just hours before it sank. Online charter sites listed it for rent for up to 195,000 euros (about $215,000) a week.

One of the survivors, identified as Charlotte Golunski, said she momentarily lost hold of her 1-year-old daughter Sofia in the water, but then managed to hold her up over the waves until a lifeboat inflated and they were both pulled to safety, Italian news agency ANSA reported, quoting the mother. The father, James Emsley, also survived, said Cocina.

Karsten Borner, the captain of the Sir Robert Baden Powell, said he had noticed the Bayesian nearby during the storm but after it calmed he saw a red flare and realized the ship had simply disappeared, ANSA and the Giornale di Sicilia newspaper reported. Borner said he and a crew member boarded their tender and found a lifeboat with 15 people, some of them injured, who they then took aboard and alerted the coast guard.

Eight of those rescued were hospitalized while the others were taken to a hotel. One body believed to be the cook was found near the wreck, but six others were unaccounted for and believed inside the hull, said Cari, the fire rescue spokesperson. The rescue operations, which were visible from shore, involved helicopters and rescue boats from the coast guard, fire rescue and civil protection service.

Fisherman Francesco Cefalu’ said he had seen a flare from shore at around 4:30 a.m. and immediately set out to the site but by the time he got there, the Bayesian had already sunk, with only cushions, wood and other items from the superyacht floating in the water.

“But for the rest, we didn’t find anyone,” he said from the port hours later. He said that he immediately alerted the coast guard and stayed on site for three hours, but didn't find any survivors. “I think they are inside, all the missing people.”

He said he had been up early to check the weather to see if he could go fishing, and surmised that a sudden waterspout had struck the yacht.

“It could be that the mast broke, or the anchor at the prow pulled it, I don’t know,” he said.

Cocina said the crew and passengers hailed from a variety of countries: In addition to Britain and the United States, passengers and crew were from Antigua, France, Germany, Ireland, Myanmar, the Netherlands, New Zealand and Spain, he said.

Among the dead and missing, four were British, two were American, and one was a man with dual citizenship from Canada and Antigua, according to Luciano Pischedda, the Italian Coast Guard official overseeing the rescue operations.

The UK Marine Accident Investigation Branch is deploying a team of four inspectors to Italy to conduct a preliminary assessment. The Foreign Commonwealth and Development office said it was “providing consular support to a number of British nationals and their families.”

Dutch foreign ministry spokesperson Casper Soetekouw said the lone Dutch citizen on board, a man, had been rescued and was not in life-threatening condition.

Lynch, once hailed as Britain’s king of technology, was cleared in June of fraud and conspiracy charges related to Hewlett Packard’s $11 billion takeover of his company, Autonomy Corp.

The not-guilty verdicts followed an 11-week criminal trial in San Francisco that delved into the history of HP’s  2011 acquisition  of Autonomy, a business software firm founded by Lynch.

The  fraud accusations  represented a dramatic turn in the fortunes of an entrepreneur once described as the Bill Gates of Britain — a title he seemed to live up to when he netted an $800 million from the Autonomy sale.

The acquittal vindicated Lynch, who had vehemently denied wrong doing and portrayed HP as a technological train wreck.

“I’m looking forward to returning the UK and getting back to what I love most: my family and innovating in my field,” Lynch said in a statement released after the verdict.

The yacht, built in 2008 by the Italian firm Perini Navi, can accommodate 12 passengers in four double cabins, a triple and the master suite, plus crew accommodations, according to Charter World and Yacht Charters.

The vessel, which previously was named Salute when it flew under a Dutch flag, featured a sleek, minimalist interior of light wood with Japanese accents designed by the French designer Remi Tessier, according to descriptions and photos on the charter sites.
