In 1983, the 12-meter sloop Australia II broke the longest-running winning streak in the history of sport. She defeated the United States defender Liberty and took the America's Cup from the United States for the first time ever in the sport's history of 132 years. Australia II's radically designed "winged keel" was perhaps the most decisive factor contributing to the spectacular victory. It is somewhat shorter than a regular keel. It's narrower where it leaves the hull, and long at the bottom. For about half of its length on the bottom it has protrusions that stick out on each side. The protrusions poke down at about 20 degrees.
The first of the seven America's Cup races took place on September 14, with the defender Liberty, Dennis Conner at the helm, defeating Australia II by a margin of 1 minute, 10 seconds. Liberty took the second race with a lead of 1:33, but the third race was called because neither vessel finished within the 5-hour, 15-minute time limit. When the race was called, Australia II was nearly 6 minutes ahead of Liberty.
The next day, Australia II won her first race by 3:14, a record margin in Cup competition. The fourth race, which Conner is said to have sailed "perfectly," brought the series to 3-1 in favor of Liberty.
In race five, Australia II posted a commanding lead of 1:47, and in the sixth, she established a new record margin of 3:25!
In the seventh and last race, Liberty led until the fourth mark, when Australia II began to pull away. On the last leg of the race, Conner tried to beat the Australians in a tacking duel—47 tacks in all—but the challengers nipped across the line in a time of 4 hours, 15 minutes, and 29 seconds-- 43 seconds ahead of Liberty.
Australia II was the first challenger to take the America's Cup. Upon her return to home, Australia II was exhibited at the National Maritime Museum in Sydney.

Australia II (KA 6) is the A ustralian 12-metre-class America's Cup challenge racing yacht that was launched in 1982 and won the 1983 America 's Cup for the Royal Perth Yacht Club .
Skippered by John Bertrand, she was the first successful Cup challenger , ending a 132-year tenure (with 26 successful defenses) by the New York Yacht Club.
Designed by Ben Lexcen , built by Steve Ward, owned by Alan Bond and helmed by John Bertrand. Lexcen's Australia II design featured a reduced waterline length and a short chord winged keel which gave the boat a significant advantage in maneuverability and heeling moment (lower ballast C of G) but was a significant disadvantage in choppy seas. The boat was also very quick in stays. The winged keel was a major design advance, and its legality was questioned by the New York Yacht Club.
During the summer of 1983, as selection trials took place for the Cup defence that autumn, the New York Yacht Club challenged the legality of the keel design. The controversy was decided in Australia II's favour. Australia II sported a number of other innovative features that contributed to her success, including radical vertical sail designs, all kevlar running rigging and a lightweight carbon fibre boom.

Australia II (KA 6) is an Australian 12-meter-class America’s Cup challenge racing yacht that was launched in 1982 and won the 1983 America’s Cup for the Royal Perth Yacht Club. Skippered by John Bertrand, she was the first successful Cup challenger, ending a 132-year tenure (with 26 successful defenses) by the New York Yacht Club. The America’s Cup, affectionately known as the Auld Mug, is a trophy awarded to the winner of the America’s Cup match races between two sailing yachts. One yacht, known as the defender, represents the yacht club that currently holds the America’s Cup and the second yacht, known as the challenger, represents the yacht club that is challenging for the cup. The timing of each match is determined by an agreement between the defender and the challenger. The America’s Cup is the oldest international sporting trophy.
Australia II was designed by Ben Lexcen, built by Steve Ward, owned by Alan Bond and helmed by John Bertrand. Lexcen’s Australia II design featured a reduced waterline length and a short chord winged keel which gave the boat a significant advantage in maneuverability and heeling moment (lower ballast center of gravity) but it was a significant disadvantage in choppy seas. The boat was also very quick in stays. The winged keel was a major design advance, and its legality was questioned by the New York Yacht Club. During the summer of 1983, as selection trials took place for the Cup defense that autumn, the New York Yacht Club challenged the legality of the keel design. The controversy was decided in Australia II’s favor.
Australia II sported a number of other innovative features that contributed to her success, including radical vertical sail designs, all-kevlar running rigging and a lightweight carbon fiber boom.
In 2009, Dutch naval architect Peter van Oossanen claimed that the winged keel was actually designed by him and his group of Dutch designers, and not Ben Lexcen. If true, this would have been reason to disqualify Australia II, since the rules state that the yacht is to be designed by citizens of the nation it represents. The controversy arose due to cup rules allowing designers to use model basins for testing that are not located in the challenging country. Model testing was performed in the Netherlands and Peter van Oossanen and another Dutch engineer, Joop Sloof, performed measurements and analyses related to evaluation of winged keel designs. The suggestion that the vessel was not designed by Australians has been refuted by both John Bertrand and project manager John Longley. Furthermore, it is well established that Lexcen had been experimenting with wing adaptations to the undersurface appendages of boats before, including his 1958 skiffs Taipan and Venom, although in the latter application they were not determined to be effective and not further adopted. In 1983 Lexcen commented on the controversy: “I have in mind to admit it all to the New York Yacht Club that I really owe the secret of the design to a Greek guy who helped me out and was invaluable. He’s been dead for 2000 years. Bloody Archimedes…”.

Australia is a famous racing yacht that represented Australia in the 1983 America's Cup, which is one of the oldest and most prestigious sailing races in the world.
Designed by Ben Lexcen, Australia was a revolutionary yacht that featured a unique winged keel design, which gave it superior speed and manoeuvrability compared to its competitors. This design caused controversy and legal challenges from other teams, but ultimately it was allowed to compete.
Australia's skipper, John Bertrand, led the team to a historic victory in the 1983 America's Cup, defeating the American yacht Liberty in a dramatic and closely contested series of races. The victory ended the New York Yacht Club's 132-year winning streak in the America's Cup, and it was a moment of great pride and celebration for Australia.
Today, Australia is considered a national treasure and an important part of Australia's sailing history. The yacht is currently on display at the Australian National Maritime Museum in Sydney, where visitors can learn more about its design and racing history.

With the Buzzards Bay 14 & 12 1/2 proto-type nearing completion , I decided to build the 1983 Americas cup winner AUSTRALIA II KA-6 .( in a 3/16" = 1' - 0" Scale.) This will be a hull only build . When I was a kid, this Boat with all it's inovations gave the America's Cup a wake up call. it kinda ended an Era, soon after, corporate sponsorships and constant rule's changes would be a constant thing .( anyone who follows the Cup knows what I mean) Don't get me wrong I am still a big fan of the America's Cup . This to me is the Boat that shook up the Cup . And is a Boat that I have wanted to build for a long time . So I thought I would squeeze it in before I start the Revised Herreshoff 12 1/2 , Plus it should be alot of fun to build

I first layed out the Keel with the help of tracing paper and the lines drawing . I then cut out the Keel, and started to lay out the frames and deck. I think this will be a fun build , She's like 65 ft. long ( so I am not just building small boats LOL) Here are the results
malmoerik , hexnut , yvesvidal and 3 others
She has some sweet lines, Pete, and it'll be great to see an America's Cup build that's unique--looking forward to following along as you bring her to life!

Excellent. If it is anything like your Herreshoff's it is going to be great.

A great yacht to build! The original is now housed in the Fremantle Maritime Museum in Western Australia.
Love it!!! The kA6 also has a very strong place in my heart too. What a wonderful boat and a formidable achievement to have beat Liberty with Dennis Cooner at the helm!
I'm definitely going to follow this one.

Oh this does look interesting Peter, I will be following along as well.
Great idea, Pete. The America's Cup boats have come a long way since those days. Australia II looks almost quaint!
The modern stuff today do not have the lines or the look or the grace.
A classic beauty. Have fun with the build.

First off , Happy 4th ( there will be a big familiy celebration later ) I am hoping to get some frames cut before I go to the party.
Thank you Jay , She has all the right elements, lines, beauty and speed
Thank you Geoff, did you take a sicky ? . and a prime minister who was a beer sculling champion. thats Awesome
Thank you Michael, I hope she turns out as well as the Herreshoff's
Thank you David B., I would like to keep it a simple build , so just the hull .
Thank you Michael Mott , There is always room for 1 more
Thank you John, I have wanted to build an Americas Cup Boat , since I was a kid . I think Australia 2 is the perfect boat for this build
Thank you Omega, I was in high School when liberty lost the cup . I remember watching it on tv . it turned the sailing world upside down . I saw the cup in San diego in 87 after Dennis won it back ( Stars and Stripes The last of the 12 meters)
Thank you Keith, for the Awesome photos . its pretty amazing to see them in person , in 92 I saw NZL 20 up close ( its very impressive ) I would love to go to Fremantle
Thank you Robert , it should be fun to figure out the wing keel
Thank you Tom, The America's Cup has come along way ( I remember when the cup was in court , back in 88 due to a hostile Dead of Gift Challenge ) the races went on, and we defended with a catamaran ( wich was not ever spoken in the same sentence as Americas Cup ) Now look that what the Americas cup has become ( see pic )
Thank you Augie , should be a fun build
Best Regards,
hexnut , Aussie048 , MEDDO and 1 other
Today, I actually got more time to build than I thought. I started by laying out the rest of the frames. ( for anyone that is new to scratch building , When you use a lines drawing for your plans , You have to subtract the thickness of your planking from the frame's . or your boat will have to much Beam... just throwing it out there ) I then cut them out with an X-Acto knife ( I do not use power tools when I build models, I save that for Full size builds ) I then thought to add the America's Cup logo to the Keel . I then cut out the notches in the Keel and frames, and dry fit them . Next I cut out the deck , I then dry fit all the pieces ( I still have to trim a few frames to deck height) My wife thinks she is very Sleek , and I have to agree. I am having alot of fun with this one . I am off to the Family 4th party. Here are the results
IgorSky , Elmer Cornish , dgbot and 11 others
Very nice, but it looks as if your deck is going to be completely flat? How are you going to install the little depression in the deck for the crewmen (not sure what you call it), given that your bulkheads rise to the level of the deck?
Very nice Pete!!! Construction is really kicking along quickly and smoothly. Well done. Can't wait for further installments as the progress continues.
Hope you have wonderful evening of celebrations with your family!
Hi Keith , I should have mentioned in the beginning that the sheer line is cut into the Keel. ( so the top if the keel is the bottom of the deck or deck height ) there wont be any cockpit details as this is a hull only build . the tops of the frames will be cut down to match the deck height , thus giving her the sheer line once the deck is installed . if you look at the photo you can see that the frames are to tall ( I do that so there is wiggle room ) nothing at this stage of the build has been glued .
mtaylor , IgorSky , Piet and 2 others
Hi Omega , Thanks, She is practicaly building herself , everything so far has gone together very easy , She has been alot of fun to build
Hi Jay , It was quite the shin-dig last night , I dont think I will need to eat this week . Fortunatly, I learned the reduction in Half bredths from my Dad,( I was about 14 years old ) and the use of scantling's to make all the calculations for the frames and keel . I have been bitten by the lofting itself a few times . ( most recent is the 12 1/2 proto-type , the profile drawing was incorrect ) it resulted into alot of fairing , I can totally relate
Hi Geoff , The Boxing Kangaroo, is now her nickname in this house.( Full credit goes to you ,) I think it would be great to see other's who want to take on this build . or any of the modern AC boats. here is a shot of Australia II tacking over Liberty . and I had to throw in the other shot as well
Piet , Jay 1 , Omega1234 and 3 others
Good work Pete, you work fast.
She's really coming along well, Pete!
Thats right Geoff, I remember that song . It was on the radio all the time .
Thank's Robert , It's not that I work fast , it's that I am constantly working
Thank you John , "The Boxing Kangaroo" Has been a fun build so far.
Pete- gotta admit, that I can't wait to see KA6 come to life. I too, have seen her at the Fremantle Maritimpe Museum and she is certainly every bit the holy grail of yachts; just as much as the Americas Cup, itself. Would you know whatever happened to Liberty? Is she in a Museum somewhere in the US, perhaps?
Pete I am looking forward to seeing this boxing kangaroo go forward. You might even get a few more wanting to take on this build. Cheers Geoff
I love the pic Geoff , my wife thinks its great , It's Very inspiring ( I better not mess this one up )
Thank you Omega, I am not sure what happened to liberty, I will have to look into it ,( she may be a charter boat ) I am not sure wich cup boats are on display at the Herreshoff Museum and America's Cup Hall of fame, Last I checked they had America3 , another thing I will look into
Hi Omega, and for anyone else who is intrested . I did some research on liberty. It seems that She was sold to a Japanese Broker and shipped to Japan. Here is the Quote I found : "For the boat, Dennis Conner's 'Liberty',we do not know about what she is doing now. However, she had been in Japan certainly. We know some sailors who had sailed Liberty. Since she has been lost, many people looked for her, and we received a lot of inquiries about it. May be someone who didn't know about her history sold or let her die (rusting away) “
But the yacht was the only one up to now which forced the challenger to sail all 7 rounds before she lost finally 4 : 3 ". And here is a pic of her being shipped off from San Diego
Elmer Cornish , egkb , dgbot and 2 others
Thanks for that. What a sad ending for a boat that's, in some ways, every bit as famous as KA6. Liberty would make a good subject for your next model. Hint?
pete48 , dgbot and egkb
Hi Omega, Perhaps ,or the 87 winner,or Maybe a 92 challenger ( hint )
Hi Pete. Nice thought, but I'm looking at something like another dockyard style model of a three masted warship to keep me off the streets!
Hi Omega, I hear what you are saying, the " Boxing Kangaroo " to me is the Cup Boat to build ( I had considered others ) She's got that certain somthing that the others just dont have .

LEARN MORE HOW WE BUILD MODEL SHIPS
Throughout Australia’s rich and diverse history, maritime travel has played a significant role. Ships and boats have transported people to and from this island for hundreds of years, and this is the reason why Australia boasts such a robust history involving ships, boats, and other forms of naval travel. The nation is home to a vast array of boats, encompassing both vintage and contemporary vessels, and boasts several world-renowned marinas.
At Seacraft Gallery, we are proud to help represent the maritime past, present, and future of Australia. We look to celebrate Australia’s rich maritime history by crafting a diverse and captivating collection of ship models, representing vessels that traverse the globe to reach the nation. Our collection spans from ancient Australian vessels to ships from corresponding eras, capturing a broad spectrum of naval history with meticulous attention to detail.
