EXPLORER 62

The theme that characterises the new Explorer 62 is its innovative layout, designed to improve life on board for its guests.

The key feature that strongly identifies it is the choice of the forward driving position, as in an explorer super yacht. The bow is the wettest and windiest place on the moving boat and also most prone to oscillation caused by wave motion.

As a result, having the helm station located in a more forward position makes navigation easier and safer.

This choice allowed us to offer a spacious cockpit, with an area covered by the fly which is furnished with a large dining table and an open area that can be fully customised, with sofas and accessories which can be moved and arranged as desired.

MAXIMUM SAFETY ON BOARD

IMG_9899.jpg

LIFE-SAVING BULB  The straight hull with life-saving bulb, completely watertight and insulated, has the function of breaking any objects that get in the way of the yacht's navigation such as logs, floating objects, containers and any ice formations. The bulb is made entirely of fibreglass, located in the lower front part of the boat, and is designed to protect the hull and the Volvo Penta IPS pods.  DOUBLE SYSTEMS AND DOUBLE ANCHORS  Bilge and autoclave pumps, double anchor system, two winches and two 50 kg steel anchors. With her double systems, she is the only vessel under 20 metres to have a large-ship anchorage system. FLY ACCESS  Explorer has a flybridge access ladder in the starboard area. Spacious steps provide a comfortable and safe passage between the main deck and the flybridge, without compromising the view when manoeuvring. VISIBILITY  The main steering station is in a forward position towards the bow, the windscreen is made from a single piece of glass with a 180-degree view, to maximise the helmsman's visibility. Two additional helm stations are located on the flybridge and aft.  LATERAL RESTRAINTS  Gunwales from bow to stern, higher than most yachts, to ensure lateral safety as in a large ship. STRUCTURAL TANKS  Certified structural fuel and fresh water tanks which are tested to improve hull stability and strength. (2800 Lt fuel, 1000 Lt water)   FULL STABILITY SYSTEM  The boat is equipped with a unique stability system, through 24 V electrical operation, consisting of carbon fins and flaps which are governed by a specially designed software. The software is constantly learning and evolving, collecting information and navigation data in order to constantly improve the management during the journey. For maximum stability even when stationary, the American Seakeeper stabiliser can be additionally installed. RANGE  The range is considerably increased compared to a traditional yacht, thanks to the efficient propulsion of two Volvo Penta IPS 800 engines that, managed by FSS software in autopilot together with a hull designed for long journeys, can reach 700 miles on a single refuel. The Explorer 62's structural fuel tank has a capacity of 2800 litres. During our tests, using her two Volvo Penta IPS 800 engines at a speed of 11/12 knots, the average consumption was 50 l/h; this can allow her to sail for a good 60 hours and cover almost 700 miles. The software, once set up in conjunction with the autopilot, tries to maximise cruising speed with the lowest possible fuel consumption, adapting to sea and wind conditions. After more than four months of testing at sea, the software optimised its efficiency through self-learning, and further increased the yacht's range.  DEDICATED APPLICATION  The yacht is equipped with a specific, custom-designed application with comprehensive graphics and explanations, which can easily be installed on handhelds and tablets. Designed and produced by Centrostiledesign. BOAT MANAGEMENT SOFTWARE • Domotics system for boat management with dedicated software. • Management of all lights divided by bridges  • Management of all bilge pumps • Management of air conditioning system divided for the 6 fancoils  • Management of the main electrical equipment such as: windscreen wipers, underwater lights, t-top opening and closing • Management of all tanks and their pumps, diesel, sewage water, waste water and fresh water  • Management of current connections with dock • Electric generator as in an A-class ship • Digital and analogue system with 22.5 kW generator  DOUBLE ACCESS TO ENGINE ROOM AND GARAGE WITH INNOVATIVE OPENING AND MAXI GENERATOR • Double entrance to engine room with fireproof and watertight class A door for access to the crew cabin from both the stern and the cockpit • Hydraulic garage door with central glass part with vertical sliding for maximum safety when lowering the tender at sea  • Garage maximum capacity • Williams 345 tender with optional electric inflator • Electrical system as in an A-class ship, digital and analogue system with 22.5 kw generator  SAFETY FIRST For many years I have had the good fortune to sail and test new boat models, organising road shows and events, experiencing the sea not only in summer but all year round and on all continents. By visiting many ports and meeting many shipowners I always gathered information from different markets and different cultures. What emerges is that they all seek the same thing: maximum comfort. Space, functionality, comfort. Boats are like houses, but the environment in which they have to navigate, like brackish water, is aggressive and constantly changing. This made the challenge of building the Explorer Yacht even more exciting.

Explorer 62, the perfection of a design yacht that has revolutionized yachting

Explorer 62, the revolution in the explorer yachts

Just by looking at it from the outside, one can sense its extraordinary stability and the immense space offered on board, but stepping on it the sensation is even more incredible. The feeling that Explorer 62 offers anyone who sets foot on it is that of a yacht that is radically different from any yacht ever seen before, one that has already revolutionized the standards in the yachting world in a way from which there will never be a return: we are in fact in front of an open space yacht that at the same time gives a solid feeling of safety, with an intelligent and extremely accurate study of the spaces and a genuine sense of design; a true floating home that gives an infinite feeling of contact with the sea. Explorer 62 is a yacht with a distinctly Teutonic personality, with rigorous and functional aesthetic lines that have immediately made their mark on the industry. It is no coincidence that in the year of its launch the boat won the prestigious ‘Best Layout 2021 ‘ award assigned by World Yachts Trophies last September at the Cannes Yachting Festival.

explorer-62-master-cabin

Designed by Davide Cipriani of Centrostiledesign and built by the Explorer Loy shipyard, managed by Riccardo Radice with Günter Neumann and Ferdinand Dorn , Explorer 62 is an incredibly comfortable and convenient yacht, with interiors that give the idea of being aboard a much larger craft than 62 feet, both for the clever exploitation of the hull and thanks to the windows that offer a 360-degree view of the sea, extending the yacht’s dimensions beyond its own limits. But above all, what is most impressive is the sensation of strength and cruising stability: both when moored and when underway, Explorer 62 has very little oscillation, almost as on dry land, thanks to the scrupulous weight balance studied down to the smallest detail, combining technical innovations with design. Its balance is a characteristic that can be perceived even when the yacht is stationary, and seems to be on dry land rather than moored at the quay.

explorer-62-cabin

This combination of elements is literally conquering owners: in the first days of the last Venice Boat Show alone, where we saw this and other boats, Explorer sold three units; and at this point we can’t wait to admire the next 78-foot model, which the yard plans to launch within a couple of years, confident that this yard will continue to revolutionize the standards.

Explorer 62 yacht tour: So tough they crashed one into a wall!

Reporting from the 2023 Boot Düsseldorf Boat Show, MBY editor Hugo Andreae takes us on a full tour of the Explorer 62...

The Düsseldorf Boat Show is always full of exciting surprises, and this year’s show was no exception. Among the most innovative boats on display was the Explorer 62, a German-Italian boat that combines excellent construction quality and innovative design ideas.

The boat is a product of German financing and Italian design and construction. The hull has been crash-tested, a remarkable feat in the boating industry. The boat sustained some damage but remained intact and didn’t sink.

The Explorer 62 is a semi-displacement design with a top speed of approximately 24 knots, powered by two Volvo IPS 800 engines. The boat has a range of about 600 nautical miles at 10 knots thanks to its 2,800 litre tanks.

The 62 also features an innovative tender garage – the door pops out and swings up on big pantograph hinges, leaving it completely out of the way. This simple yet clever feature allows for easy access to the garage, which can hold a Williams 395 or a Lampuga electric surfboard .

The Explorer 62 is designed to be a house on the water, every bit as safe and stable as a normal house. To achieve this, the boat has all three stabilisers: fin stabilisers, a gyro stabiliser, and a Humphrey trim stabilisation system, which work together to make the boat rock steady.

The boat has a nice, open stern platform that offers a lot of deck space and a fantastic view. It is a versatile and well-built vessel that will appeal to boating enthusiasts who want a comfortable and stable cruising experience.

Enjoy the tour…

Wreck of the last ship of famed Anglo-Irish explorer Shackleton found off the coast of Canada

Canada shipwreck.

ST. JOHN'S, Newfoundland (AP) — The wreck of the last ship belonging to Sir Ernest Shackleton, a famous Irish-born British explorer of Antarctica, has been found off the coast of Labrador in Canada, 62 years after it went missing. The wreck was found by an international team led by the Royal Canadian Geographical Society.

The Quest was found using sonar scans on Sunday evening, sitting on its keel under 390 meters (1,280 feet) of churning, frigid water, the society said. Its towering mast is lying broken beside it, likely cracked off as the vessel was sucked into the depths after it struck ice on May 5, 1962.

“I heard that some Americans were interested in finding Quest, and I just had this picture in my mind of a few billionaires on yachts, up in the Labrador Sea,” John Geiger, leader of the Shackleton Quest Expedition and the chief executive of the Royal Canadian Geographical Society, told an audience at the Memorial University’s Marine Institute in St. John’s, Newfoundland, on Wednesday.

“We’ve done it the right way. It’s not about anyone’s ego, it’s about telling great stories and celebrating some of the finest human attributes,” Geiger said.

He called the Quest a historically very important ship.

Shackleton’s death aboard the ship in 1922 marked the end of what historians consider the “heroic age” of Antarctic exploration. The explorer led three British expeditions to the Antarctic, and he was in the early stages of a fourth when he died of a heart attack. He was 47.

The Norwegian-built Quest was a schooner-rigged steamship, and Shackleton bought it specifically to travel to Canada’s High Arctic, Geiger said. But the Canadian government at the time axed those plans, and Shackleton decided to set sail once again for the Antarctic.

He died when it was just off South Georgia, east of the Falkland Islands in the South Atlantic.

After the explorer’s death, the Quest was used for Arctic research and then returned to its original intended use as a sealing vessel. It sank in 1962, after it was damaged by ice in the Labrador Sea while on a whaling trip.

The vessel appears to be in “incredible condition,” though it was damaged when it slammed into the seabed, Geiger said.

It won’t be brought to the surface — that would be far too expensive, he added — but it will be thoroughly documented and studied. A crew will likely head out some time before the end of summer to begin taking footage of the vessel with a remotely operated vehicle.

In 2022, researchers discovered another one of Shackleton’s ships, the Endurance in 10,000 feet — about 3,000 meters — of icy water, a century after it was swallowed up by Antarctic ice.

A team of marine archaeologists, engineers and other scientists used an icebreaker ship and underwater drones to locate the wreck at the bottom of the Weddell Sea, near the Antarctica Peninsula.

The expedition Endurance22 embarked from Cape Town, South Africa, in early February in a ship capable of breaking through 3-foot (1-meter)-thick ice.

The team, which included more than 100 researchers and crew members, deployed underwater drones that combed the seafloor for two weeks in the area where the ship was recorded to have sunk in 1915.

Shackleton never achieved his ambition to become the first person to cross Antarctica via the South Pole. In fact, he never set foot on the continent during the failed Endurance expedition, though he did visit Antarctica during earlier voyages.

ST. JOHN’S, Newfoundland (AP) — The wreck of the last ship belonging to Sir Ernest Shackleton, a famous Irish-born British explorer of Antarctica, has been found off the coast of Labrador in Canada, 62 years after it went missing.
