Heesen Yachts’ Rise as a Top Superyacht Builder

  • By Kim Kavin
  • January 4, 2022

Heesen Yachts

Frans Heesen, at least at first, wasn’t in the superyacht business. He was in high-tech plastics, which, during the 1960s and ’70s, were becoming so ubiquitous that the word “plastics” became a famous quote unto itself from the Dustin Hoffman film The Graduate .

But in 1978, Heesen acquired Striker Boats, which built in aluminum. The first yacht produced under the Heesen brand, Amigo , launched a year later, along with the entrepreneurial juggernaut we know today as Heesen Yachts. Frans Heesen had no way of knowing it at the time, but at 65 feet length overall, Amigo was a fraction of the size his yard would go on to represent in the superyacht industry.

Heesen Yachts

It was in 1988 that Heesen Yachts truly became the globally known brand it is today. That’s the year the yard launched Octopussy , a 124-footer that could top 50 knots. At the time, it was the fastest luxury yacht in the world, and suddenly, the name Heesen was on everyone’s lips from St. Barts to St.-Tropez.

Since then, the builds have just kept coming, getting bigger and more interesting as the Dutch yard delivers them. Frans Heesen retired in 2012, having sold the yard a few years earlier, but Heesen Yachts continues to be known for building in aluminum and steel. (So much for that one important word being “plastics.”)

Heesen Yachts

One of the yard’s noteworthy current builds is Project Apollo, a 180-footer whose steel keel was laid in August. The yacht represents a business practice that has worked well for Heesen: starting a build on spec so that by the time an owner is found, he can make his imprint on the interior styling while still enjoying a shortened delivery schedule.

And just because yachts like Project Apollo are being built on spec doesn’t mean they’re being produced as cookie-cutter designs. Yes, this yacht is the latest in Heesen’s 55-meter Steel class, but it’s also an evolution in styling.

“As much as we love our original design with the vertical windows, we felt it was time to make an evolutionary step,” said Frank Laupman of Omega Architects, a frequent Heesen Yachts partner. “We opted for a larger expanse of floor-to-ceiling glass, without mullions, in the main salon and sky lounge. Then we took the opportunity to give a slightly more aggressive look to the profile by using continuous sheets of tinted glass. The horizontal lines stretch the optical length and balance the air draft. The result is beautiful: We retained the family look and feel but gave it an elegant touch.”

Heesen Yachts

The recently delivered Ela is another example of how the spec-start build process still allows for adding some personality to an existing design. Ela , which was known throughout its build as Project Altea, is the second hull in Heesen’s sub-500-gross-ton Nova Plus class. The owners bought the yacht just three months before the delivery date and worked with interior designer Cristiano Gatto to personalize it.

“Together with the client, we revisited all the loose furniture, inside and out, selecting new materials for all the upholstery and the key items from Paola Lenti, B&B Italia, Poltrona Frau and Promemoria,” Gatto says. “But more importantly, we designed bespoke pieces such as tables, sofas and lamps, all beautifully crafted by Italian ateliers, who delivered them in record time.”

Today, the yard is putting the finishing touches on Project Falcon, a 196-footer that splashed in July after being touted as the yard’s largest-ever steel displacement yacht. It has what the yard is calling “one of the most elaborate and sophisticated designs in the shipyard’s history,” with Sinot Yacht Architecture & Design including custom-built furniture and lighting along with rare woods and bespoke metal and glass. Exactly how that interior will look is yet to be disclosed, but Rick van de Wetering, the yard’s chief operating officer, says, “This has been an immensely complex but satisfying project, which has given rise to some very creative solutions.”

Heesen Yachts

With twin MTU diesels, Project Falcon is projected to have a top speed of 17.5 knots and a range of 4,200 nautical miles at 13 knots. Delivery is scheduled in December. On board will be a glass elevator and a touch-and-go helipad, features that couldn’t have been imagined aboard Amigo back in the late 1970s.

Just try to guess what the next half-century at Heesen Yachts might bring.

Heesen Unveils New 200 ft Superyacht Project: Monte-Carlo

The project has been designed with modern owners in mind, focusing on privacy, wellness and sustainability.

By Toby Louch

heesen superyacht

The annual Monaco Yacht Show is the main event on the calendar where the superyacht industry gathers together to reveal what they have been working on. At this year’s show – which runs September 25 – 28 – Dutch superyacht builder Heesen Yachts has revealed its latest project, aptly codenamed Monte-Carlo . Stretching over 200 ft in length, Monte-Carlo is a new steel FDHF superyacht of vast proportions.

The design of this new vessel was undertaken by British studio Harrison Eidsgaard and is comfortably one of Heesen’s most ambitious projects to date. This new yacht has been tailored to the wants and needs of a modern owner, particularly those looking to spend extended periods onboard.

Extended over four decks, this new yacht is one of the largest in Heesen’s history, with features that have been inspired by current trends in the market. “It is unusual for us to build a four-decker, but we have had a few requests for such a boat from former clients, so it made sense to create one,” said Heesen CEO, Niels Vaessen. “We are addressing a key market that are looking to maximize space and experience on board to share with family and friends.”

Heesen Project Monte-Carlo

Throughout the design process, privacy was always a significant consideration, a trend that has risen in many owners – post-pandemic – who are looking to spend longer periods on board and potentially work from their yacht. Of the four decks on Heesen’s Project Monte-Carlo, an entire deck is dedicated to the owners, featuring both a master suite and an expansive office area.

“It is a very open master suite, with the bathtub, shower and office all interconnected,” said designer, Peder Eidsgaard. “The benefit of this arrangement is that an incoming owner can easily toy with the space devoted to each area. The potential is huge, you expand the master suite to include a private foredeck with its own sundeck, jacuzzi and a fold-down balcony to starboard. From his/her office, the owner can walk straight out onto the balcony and take a seat.”

In addition to the expansive owner’s deck, guest accommodation can be found entirely on the main deck forward, and is comprised of four large staterooms and a fifth full-beam VIP stateroom.

Heesen Project Monte-Carlo

At the stern of the yacht is an impressive 247-sq-ft pool with glass sides, creating the illusion that passengers are swimming in the sea. On the main deck, there is a ‘ beach lounge ’ – a relaxed and informal dining area that can accommodate up to 14 guests – in addition to an outdoor kitchen and sky lounge seating area.

As well as privacy, new superyacht owners are also interested in wellness , with Hessen’s Project Monte-Carlo ticking that box with a dedicated center on the lower deck. Current mock-ups suggest this space will feature a large gym, sauna, hammam and massage room.

Heesen Project Monte-Carlo

As yacht builders look to make the superyacht industry more sustainable , Heesen has technically enabled Project Monte-Carlo for serial hybrid propulsion, as there is space for a large battery bank. The vessel has also been future-proofed with space for hydrogen combustion or fuel cell when it becomes readily available.

“We see that our owners are increasingly interested in minimizing their environmental impact,” said Peter van der Zanden, Heesen’s general manager for design and development. “By planning the yacht around tried-and-tested green solutions, we are helping them make good decisions that don’t add a lot of time and cost to the build.”

By Katie Scott   4 September 2023

Dutch shipyard Heesen has successfully delivered the stunning 80m (262ft) superyacht GENESIS to her new owner, setting a new benchmark for the yard as the biggest yacht they have built to date.

Surpassing the previous record holders of Galactica Super Nova at 70m (229.6ft) and charter yacht ILLUSION at 65m (213ft), the new flagship is a custom-built motor yacht with design collaborations from Van Oossanen Naval Architects, Winch Design, and Sinot Yacht Architecture and Design. Embodying the classic, sporty DNA of the Heesen fleet, GENESIS is undeniably a true Heesen superyacht but with a contemporary and almost futuristic twist on previous builds.

Overview of the foredeck onboard M/Y GENESIS, surrounded by sea

Sporting a six-cabin layout, superyacht GENESIS hosts an army of indulgent features and amenities including a fully certified touch-and-go helipad that can also transform into an outdoor cinema, a glass-bottomed swimming pool, abundant exterior deck space for socializing and relaxing in the Mediterranean sun, plus an on-deck Jacuzzi and WiFi connectivity.

Enabling the owner and their guests seamless access to the sea, motor yacht GENESIS has a generous beach club environment with a wet bar, in addition to plenty of storage for adrenaline-fuelled water toys.

Currently, it is not expected that M/Y GENESIS will be made available for charter. However, if you’re interested in chartering a yacht of a similar caliber, you can view and compare all  Heesen superyachts for charter .

fire on atina heesen yacht

Sunken 47m Heesen superyacht Atina to be recovered by the end of September

What remains of the 47-metre Heesen yacht Atina will be recovered by the end of the month, according to the maritime directorate of Olbia, Ugo Piras.

On 11 August, Atina sunk approximately 300 metres from the coast of Olbia in Sardinia, Italy following a fire that broke out in the stern. Dramatic footage taken by the Olbia Coast Guard shows the flames spread until the superyacht is entirely engulfed. She then begins to list and sink.

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Direzione Marittima Olbia (@guardiacostieraolbia)

The Olbia Fire Brigade worked alongside the Olbia Coast Guard to tackle the blaze from 8pm local time. Eight people were on board but were evacuated and confirmed safe by authorities.

The recovery of the yacht follows an operation to remove the 33,000 litres of fuel and 18 batteries that were on board at the time, which was completed on 30 August. Piras also told BOAT International that the defueling process caused "a small leak" from a pipe compromised in the fire, but was promptly remediated on site.

No other pollutants were reported. Anti-pollution pads have been placed on the scene and an area prohibition order has been issued.

Atina was delivered by the Dutch shipyard in 2008 and won a Neptune at the World Superyacht Awards the following year.

She has sailed under many names, including Elandess , Raasta and Naseem . The superyacht was most recently sold in 2021 at a last known asking price of €16,250,000. Atina then underwent an extensive, multi-month refit with Turkish shipyard FDC Yachts to optimise her for charter .

The most noteworthy change was the sundeck, which was redesigned with a larger pool set forward of the new navigation mast, a Teppanyaki grill and a large bar that could seat up to 12 guests for parties or sporting events.

The cause of the fire is being investigated by the Maritime Authority of Olbia.

BOAT International will update the story as it develops.

Silence & comfort

Home is all about fuel efficiency and comfort. Her lightweight aluminium hull form offers superlative performance and efficiency in a luxurious design package of under 500GT. Add a striking superstructure, vertical bow and spacious aft platform with a wide staircase leading to the main deck and we believe this yacht is a cut above others in her class.

First impressions

The exterior of Home is designed by Omega Architects and it’s our first yacht with hybrid propulsion. In this case ‘Hybrid’ means that the yacht can draw on two sources of power for propulsion: diesel mechanical and diesel electrical. Either or both sources can be used at the same time. This provides less noise and vibration, a more flexible power management which means better efficiency.

The brief to Cristiano Gatto with regard to the interior styling was to provide a relaxed and welcoming beach club ambience with ample connection to the outside environment. To achieve this objective, Cristiano and his team have drawn on natural materials with minimal artificial treatments and taken full advantage of the full-height glass windows.

The vessel’s generous 1,200 GT interior is as equally stylish. Each deck follows a different theme—water, earth, or air—and can be accessed by an elegant staircase or glass elevator. The living quarters are focused on family and togetherness yet the open-plan layout ensures a sense of spaciousness. The interior also showcases exquisite cabinetwork by the yard itself. (Heesen is one of the few shipyards in the world to have its own cabinet-making company.)

The lower deck is home to a 700-square-foot, Japanese-inspired wellness area with an elliptical whirlpool, a steam room, a sauna, a gym, and a beauty area. As you may have guessed, this deck is an ode to water.

Upstairs, the main deck centers around an earth-themed salon with a striking oak coffee table and a dining area with chairs that have been upholstered in real palm leaves. Four guest suites are also located on this deck. A movable partition separates the forward suites to create a full-beam VIP or a large playroom for younger family members if so desired.

Heesen Project Sparta Superyacht

The private upper deck is dedicated to two separate owner’s suites. The decor reflects the lightness of air with soft fabrics, sky blues, mother-of-pearl inlays, and a patterned Tai Ping carpet.

Outside, the main deck aft features an open-air beach terrace, an inviting 21-foot infinity pool, and a swim platform that offers direct access to the water. The foredeck is outfitted with another lounge, while the flybridge has its own Jacuzzi. All exterior decks are dotted with furniture designed by Winch and built by Siebensee and Leerdam.

Sparta will shortly head to the North Sea for intensive sea trials. Let’s see if she’s as powerful as she is pretty, then.

Description

The new 50-meter displacement motor yacht heesen is launched.

New full-custom yacht Ann G, built on the Dutch shipyard Heesen, was launched in May 2015. Construction management and all finishing works for this displacement 50-meter yacht were carried out by the brokerage company Arcon Yachts. One of the most anticipated and beautiful projects of the year 2015 — a new yacht Heesen — sure enough will become a star of the upcoming seasons in the category of super yachts up to 500GT.

The new Heesen 50m project is a result of more than three years of effective cooperation of the famous Dutch shipyard and brokerage company Arcon Yachts, which carried out all the comprehensive maintenance and management of the project at all stages of design and construction. Ann G is a fully displacement 50 meter yacht with a steel hull with 499 GRT, designed by naval architects Van Oossanen and Heesen engineering team as an individual customized project. Motor yacht Heesen 50 m is powered by two MTU 8V 4000 M63 diesel engines, so the new vessel will be able to reach a maximum speed of 15 knots and make an autonomous navigation range of 4,000 nautical miles at a speed of 12 knots.

The exterior design of the new Heesen project №17350 Ann G created by Clifford Denn is absolutely unique because of almost complete customization and thoughtful attention of the Owner and designers to the smallest details: starting from the shape of the mast and the soft contours of the hull, and ending up with a special form of handrails. The general style of the yacht Ann G is both classical and classy, elegant and brutal.

There are 5 guest cabins on board of the yacht Ann G: 4 cabins on the lower deck are for guests, and then upper on the main deck there is the Owner's suite. One of the most distinctive features of Heesen 50 m project is a very large beach club with a bar, a hammam and fitness equipment in the stern of the vessel, as well as non-standard storage location for tender and water toys in the garage and in the forward part of the main deck. The hull of the new 50 meter yacht project is painted in customized Dark Night Blue color, designed specifically for this yacht.

Motor yacht Heesen 50m could really boast of her incomparable interior, designed and realized by famous designer bureau Raymond Langton Design. If you try to describe in a few words the interior aesthetics this ambitious new displacement yacht project is a smart and subtle reinterpretation of Art Deco style. New yacht Heesen 50 m Ann G is decorated with countless stone mosaics, exquisite selection of marbles, with all guest areas fully finished in walnut and Macassar ebony. There are diverse art elements throughout the yacht, including a huge chandelier over the dining table on the main deck, luxurious panels on the lower deck and huge sculpture, towering in the stairwell from the lower deck to the top.

Moreover, technical solutions applied on the yacht Heesen 50m, such as extra-wide doorways and stairwells, traditionally used on the yachts of a much larger size, create a feeling of astonishing spaciousness and comfort on board.
