RYA Helmsman vs. Powerboat Lvl 2 + ICC- Thread starter Granthsmith

GranthsmithAs I'm now the proud owner of a 27' sports cruiser (single outdrive)and I am going to kick-off with a 2 day training course to get the basic skills required to handle my new toy. Can anyone advise whether I should look to start with the RYA Helmsman or Powerboat Lvl 2 course as they seem very similar? The benefit of the Powerboat as I see it is I can get my ICC at the same time but I'm concerned it may not be directed enough towards motorcruising? ![rya powerboat level 2 to icc JKay](https://ybw-data.community.forum/avatars/m/11/11346.jpg?1576058866) I seem to remember doing and Getting my ICC with CEVNI on the Helmsmans course although did the PB2 later,as you say they do seem very simlair As you may be on the Thames for a season I'd say do the Helmsman course with ICC exam at the end and then decide what you want to do next mebbe Day skipper theory then practical Thanks JKay, definitely won't be on the Thames though, it's going to be out and out coastal cruising for me, she's going to be based out of Saxon Wharf in Southampton. ![rya powerboat level 2 to icc Solitaire](https://ybw-data.community.forum/avatars/m/0/243.jpg?1576058866) Active memberGranthsmith said: As I'm now the proud owner of a 27' sports cruiser (single outdrive)and I am going to kick-off with a 2 day training course to get the basic skills required to handle my new toy. The PB1+2 is VERY basic.. start/stop, some ropework, bit of engine info, launch and recover, coming along side etc. I guess if its one-to-one, your trainer might take you further along the learning curve, but in group training, there is obviously a fair amount of sitting about while others drive Still, its quite fun, and enables you to get out on the water and have some clue what you are doing. Malthouse said: But the PB2 course content is much much wider than that. It covers navigation, passage planning, crewing and crew communication. It goes into detail about how to operate a boat at passage making speeds as well as pilotage, buoyage, tides and colregs. It is not as detailed as Dayskipper or PB Intermediate, but it is a very rounded and comprehensive course with a relevance for outside the bay . The other important thing about PB2 is because it leads into an ICC the candidate has to actually show an ability and an understanding of the topics, like the fundamental way the boat works and interacts with the elements. I did more recently look through the course, and perhaps it now seems very basic just to me. Still, I would advise anyone starting out to take the course, but in my opinion it is an introduction. That is exactly what it is, and there is no way that we pretend to turn everybody into expert boat handlers after it. It is there to teach technique and a variety of other skills. Of course it depends how big the bay is , but I think it would be naive of a new boater to think this course prepared him for the sea. After all, if the course was really so informative, there wouldnt be much need for any others! Click to expand... Thanks all for the input, I think I will go for the Powerboat 2 especially as it is going to be own boat, 1:1 tuition. Day 1 is tomorrow and day 2 is on Monday when we are going to be combining the tuition with transferring the boat from Brighton where she is now to her new home at Saxon. RYA Level 2 Powerboat HandlingRYA powerboat courses are primarily for those using small powered craft such as RIBs, dories and sportsboats that don't generally undertake long or offshore passages. The types of commercial craft requiring this level certification are typically: charter fishing boats, small passenger launches, thrill ride operators, harbour patrol launches, construction site safety boats etc. If you will be using larger boats with accommodation and the capacity to cruise or work further offshore you are likely to need a certificate within the motor cruising programme such as Day Skipper, Coastal Skipper or Yachtmaster Offshore. If you need a Level 2 Powerboat Handling certificate in order to work on a commercial craft subject to the MCA's codes of practice, you will need to get it commercially endorsed . You can then work on commercial vessels up to 24m in length, operating in category 6 waters - that is up to 3 miles from a nominated departure point in fine weather and daylight hours. | | | None. Recognition in Spain Unlike the United Kingdom, Spain requires that skippers hold a boat licence to operate boats flying a Spanish flag. The same rule applies if you buy a boat or rent a boat. Navigating the waters with an RYA qualification in Spain varies depending on several factors including the boat’s flag state, the pilot’s nationality, residence, and the boating location. Here’s a summary: UK Citizens or Residents : Post-BREXIT, Spain recognizes RYA qualifications for UK citizens or residents. This makes it easier for them to rent boats or sail their own in Spanish waters. UK-flagged boats require no additional steps, but boats under the Spanish flag need registration for authorization; the process is automatic and simple. Non-UK Citizens with Non-Spanish Flagged Boats : To navigate in Spanish waters, a valid boating license from the boat’s flag country or the skipper’s country of origin or residence is necessary. RYA qualifications are generally accepted if recognized in the skipper’s home country. Carrying proof of a qualification’s acceptance, such as a letter from an insurance broker, is advisable. Non-UK Citizens with Spanish Flagged Boats : The General Directorate of Merchant Marine allows EEA citizens and those from specific countries to skipper Spanish-flagged recreational boats with a license from their home country. In practice, most boat clubs and charter companies accept RYA qualifications. Overall, while RYA qualifications are highly regarded, their acceptability in Spain is nuanced and varies based on specific circumstances, especially concerning the boat’s flag state and the skipper’s nationality or residency. As a school recognised by the Spanish Maritime Authority, The Boat School can issue a Spanish Boat Licence to students who have successfully completed the RYA Powerboat Level 2 course. This option is not available for every course. You can find out more about the Spanish Boat Licence here. International recognition On successful completion of an RYA Powerboat Level 2 Course, UK nationals and nationals of certain other countries (Recognition) automatically qualify for an ICC issued by the RYA (see the tab “ICC”). The ICC is widely recognised as evidence of competence in most European countries. On successful completion of the RYA Powerboat Level 2 Course, UK nationals and nationals of certain other countries automatically qualify for an ICC (International Certificate for Operators of Pleasure Craft) issued by the RYA. The UK ICC is issued by the RYA issued in conformity with Resolution No. 40 of the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) Working Party on Inland Water Transport. The certificate is available to a person who fulfils the following eligibility criteria: 1) has reached the age of 16. 2) is physically and mentally fit to operate a pleasure craft. 3) holds the Powerboat Level 2 course completion certificate. 4) meets the nationality requirements. Who can get an ICC from the RYA? The following countries have NOT yet adopted Resolution 40 of the UNECE. If you are a national of one of these countries and you are resident in that country or another country on this list the RYA WILL issue you with an ICC. Albania Andorra Armenia Azerbaijan Bosnia and Herzegovina Canada Cyprus Denmark Estonia France Georgia Greece Iceland Israel Italy Kazakhstan Kyrgyzstan Liechtenstein Malta Moldova Monaco Montenegro Netherlands* Poland Portugal Russian Federation San Marino Serbia Slovenia Spain Sweden Tajikistan The former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia Turkey Turkmenistan United States of America Uzbekistan *The Netherlands has adopted Resolution 40 of the UNECE; however, the Dutch Government has given the RYA special permission to issue the ICC. Who can’t get an ICC from the RYA? The following countries have adopted Resolution 40 of the UNECE. If you are a national of one of these countries and are resident in that country or another country on this list the RYA WILL NOT issue you with an ICC. The initiative provides on-water sessions to help women develop their confidence and knowledge in preparation for taking the RYA Powerboat Instructor course. Six participants – taking the total to 12 over the last two years - have now qualified as instructors, enabling them in turn to help more people gain RYA Powerboat Level 2 certificates to support activities at their clubs and centres. Programme coordinator and RYA Midlands Sailing Developer Sallie Bowd said: “Women often feel overlooked or that men take the lead in powerboating, and the upskilling days are designed to give them time on the water and the confidence to do an RYA Powerboat Instructor course. “It enables them to form friendships and go through the pathway together, so they feel empowered to ask questions and practise their boat handling, without any concerns about what people might think, in a supportive and encouraging learning environment.” Participants attended one or more days on the water over winter to build on their existing RYA Powerboat Level 2 skills ahead of a pre-assessment day and then taking the RYA Powerboat Instructor course. Among those who qualified with the most recent cohort was Chloe Kinsella, an RYA Dinghy Sailing Trainer who works at clubs and centres across the Midlands. Chloe said: “I’m used to going on courses with a group of men and although I’ve been doing powerboating for a long time, I’ve always really been a sailor, so I wanted to enhance and broaden my skills with likeminded people with similar experience. “There’s definitely a different atmosphere with a group of all-women. It feels less judgemental when something doesn’t go according to plan, which makes it less nerve-racking. Everyone was keen to praise and help each other and press each other forward. It was a case of ‘let’s help you make that better’, so we were all enhancing each other’s experience. Everyone was in it for everyone!” ![rya powerboat level 2 to icc Three women on shore and waiting to get in a powerboat and two on the water in a grey RIB getting ready to go.](https://www.rya.org.uk/-/media/dam/website-images/news/2024/jun-24/mids-aspiring-female-instructors-(4).jpg) OpportunitiesAlso qualifying as an RYA Powerboat Instructor was Sarah Peel, Centre Manager at Carsington Sports & Leisure, who said: “I was a powerboat instructor in the late 1990s but my qualification lapsed as I moved into a senior role and found I was spending more time in the office. “I’ve spent 30 years in the industry and I’m used to working in a male dominated environment, so I joined the programme because it was too good an opportunity to miss rather than because it was a women’s initiative, but actually it was really enjoyable to be part of an all-female group. “We all supported each other along the way and we were all in it together, with a nice atmosphere in which people were comfortable to share things, and it was very much a team effort. We all wanted each other to pass the course – and we did! “As a full-time working mum, the programme also made it achievable. It was broken down into steps which made it possible for me to get on the water and regain my confidence. It was very much about ‘let’s make this manageable’ so we could fit it in around busy lives. “Now I’m a qualified instructor again, I can train staff and our younger support crew to get their RYA Powerboat Level 2 certificate, which supports what we do and is a reward for them and opens doors for young people to other opportunities and qualifications.” ![rya powerboat level 2 to icc Half a dozen women gathered around a grey RIB and in instructor on shore as part of an RYA Powerboat Instructor Course.](https://www.rya.org.uk/-/media/dam/website-images/news/2024/jun-24/mids-aspiring-female-instructors-(1).jpg) RYA Midlands also recently hosted a free Women on Water Development Day at Burton Sailing Club, providing a welcoming space to develop sailing skills on the water and explore pathways into dinghy instructing and race coaching. RYA Midlands Regional Manager Ben Hodgson said: “Our projects in the Midlands are a really good way to encourage women who may not otherwise come forward, providing additional resources for clubs and centres and also female role models for the future.” The aim is to now host further Women on Water days and continue the powerboat programme to get a new group course-ready to qualify for the 2025 season. Registration is open for two RYA Midlands upskilling days this autumn for aspiring female powerboat instructors: - Saturday 12th September at Draycote Water Sailing Club
- Saturday 28th September at Carsington Sports and Leisure
