First look: Spirit 30 – Spirit’s smallest ever yacht
- Rupert Holmes
- November 11, 2021
The all-new Spirit 30 is the smallest yacht ever produced by the well regarded British yard which specialises in modern classic wooden yachts. Rupert Holmes reports
The sleek classic style of all Spirit Yachts is guaranteed to turn heads and the Ispwich-based yard’s smallest new model for many years, the spirit 30 is no exception.
The Spirit 30 follows the well-proven format of a light displacement, modern hull shape below the water allied to a performance rig and sails. It’s a combination that delivers speeds which belie the boat’s modest dimensions.
During the commissioning sail, for example, the Spirit 30 recorded 6.8 knots of boat speed close-hauled and 10 knots off the wind in 18-20 knots of breeze.
Yet this is civilised vessel with a self-tacking furling jib and all sail controls led aft for easy single and short-handed sailing. The first example is an open day sailer with a large cockpit, although there are also plans for a version with a cuddy and basic overnight accommodation.
Auxiliary power is from a Torqeedo Cruise 4.0FP electric pod drive. This offers a 16-mile range at five knots with the standard battery and a maximum speed under power of 6.5 knots.
The wood epoxy composite construction is one of the most sustainable options for building a new boat, requiring far less noxious resins and plastics than conventional fibreglass structures.
Typically three layers of timber are epoxy glued together, creating an extremely stiff, yet very light, monocoque structure. A protective outer layer of glass cloth and epoxy is then applied, which enhances waterproofing and provides impact resistance.

Spirit Yachts has gone a stage further than usual with this boat, using flax fibres and bio resins for the outer layer. The result is what the company says is its most sustainable yacht to date and plans to roll out the same materials to the larger boats in the range.
The Spirit 30 is offered with a choice of fixed or lifting keels and the boat is light enough to be towed on a road trailer. The first example is scheduled to be exhibited at the Dusseldorf boat show in January 2022.

Full-Electric Spirit 30 Is Designed for Coastal Cruising and Regatta Racing
Designed as a simple yet elegant day sailor, the Spirit 30 is a new addition to the Spirit Yachts portfolio . Sporting a 1930s -inspired, modern classic design and uncluttered decks, she is aesthetically beautiful and simple to sail. The ideal yacht for coastal cruising on a sunny day with family and friends, the Spirit 30 is also set up for single or short-handed sailing.
The first full-electric Spirit 30 was constructed from responsibly sourced, FSC*-certified Sapele ring frames and Douglas fir planking. The hull was then made water-tight using flax material, which was laid on the timber and sealed using PRO-SET bio-resin.
At 9.15m long with a light displacement of 1.7 tonnes, the Spirit 30 has options for a fixed or lifting keel and rudder. The yacht can also easily be transported on a road trailer adding to the versatility of this simple yet classically beautiful design.
The fully electric Spirit 30 has a Torqeedo Cruise 4.0 FP electric drive system powered by lithium-ion batteries and a Torqeedo 650W battery charger, giving a range of circa 16nm at 5 knots. The increased range can be gained with optional additional battery capacity if preferred. The batteries are recharged by shore power or via solar panels that mount over the cockpit cover.
Spirit Yachts Managing Director and Head of Production Mike Taylor added, “ Not only is the Spirit 30 much-admired and a joy to sail, but she is also the most sustainable Spirit yacht to date. After several tests, we used flax fabric and bio-resin on the non-structural elements of the hull, which have been very successful. The electric drive system is easy to operate and delivers simple, near-silent maneuvering. ”
Mike Taylor added, “ We are continuing our drive to lower the carbon footprint of all our yachts and as such the hull materials and the electric drive system on the Spirit 30 are now standard options for all Spirits. ”
With her uncluttered decks and all sail controls led aft, the Spirit 30 is set up for single or short-handed sailing. Her light displacement, modern hull design, and performance rig and sails deliver speed on the water for competitive regatta racing. During commissioning in a wind speed of 18-20knots, Spirit Yachts recorded an upwind sailing speed of 6.8knots and 10knots off the wind.
Sean McMillan added, “ Due to high levels of positive interest, there are now two iterations of the Spirit 30 design. The first version is the recently launched classic day sailor version, with a large cockpit and no interior living space. This original design has been progressed into a second version, which incorporates a small ‘cuddy’ berth and simple amenities for a weekend on the water. ”

Introducing the new spirit 30 from spirit yachts.
News from Spirit Yachts
What an autumn we have had so far! With double World Superyacht Awards wins and the launch of three new Spirits (a 65DH, a 72DH and a 30), life has been busier than ever. Not to mention the fantastic reaction to the Spirit 46, which featured in the long-awaited release of James Bond's No Time To Die (which is still in cinemas if you haven't seen it yet).
We are thrilled to reveal the new Spirit 30, which will be on display at the upcoming boot Düsseldorf from 22nd - 30th January 2022. She might be the smallest of all the Spirits, but she more than pulls her weight when it comes to style and performance. Before handover to her owner, the Spirit team had the opportunity to go for a test sail and everyone stepped off the yacht with a big smiles on their faces (she seems to have that effect on people...).
With a yard full of sail and motor yachts in build and a healthy pipeline of new and innovative commissions, it is an exciting time to join the Spirit Yachts team.

The 9.15m Spirit 30 is fully electric and is the first Spirit hull to have flax lay-up and bio resin incorporated into its build.
Responding to demand for a smaller Spirit design, the first Spirit 30 has now been handed over to her owner in the UK. The yacht will be on display at the upcoming Düsseldorf boat show from 22nd – 30th January 2022.

39-ft S/Y WISP Launches and Heads South

39-ft S/Y WISP hit the water after a compressed build time of less than a year. Photo credit: Alison Langley
On August 5, our latest design, WISP, was gently lowered into the harbor in Camden, Maine. The 39-footer is the most recent in a string of luxurious daysailer/weekenders we’ve designed over the last couple of decades. She was designed to be beautiful, comfortable, easy-to-sail, and fast—and by the end of that week in August we were able to see how we did on all counts.
While packing plenty of performance under sail, Wisp effortlessly transforms into a luxury weekender, featuring saloon seating for four and a queen-size forward berth. Photo credit: Alison Langley
WISP hit the water after a compressed build time of less than a year, and that last week was key in pulling all the details together. Lots of last-minute details in systems and rigging took place in a well-choreographed rush orchestrated by Alec Brainerd, founder of Artisan Boatworks , as the goal of sea trials loomed Thursday morning. Step the mast, tune the rig, bend on sails, commission the engine, electrics, and hydraulic system…. Details seemed endless, but by midday Thursday we were casting off lines and heading out to see how she sailed.
With crimson cushions and backrests in place, we began to test the luxury of the cockpit even before sails were unrolled—with owners, builder, designer, and reps from sailmaker North Sails , spar—builder Moore Brothers , and Ransom Morse, hydraulics genius, we were testing the capacity of the 13-foot-long cockpit. The cockpit was laid out to provide a generous lounge area forward and sail-handling focus aft at the helm, and easily met the challenge of eight people aboard.
On deck, WISP offers a sophisticated, dual-purpose cockpit: a plush, upholstered area for lounging forward and a dedicated sailing zone aft. Thanks to a design that marries functional ergonomics with classic aesthetics, the helmsperson enjoys easy access to all sailing controls without leaving the wheel. Photo credit: Alison Langley
The day was clear and warm, with a gentle sea breeze building. We tuned the electrically-furling mainsail to mate the mandrel to the winch, then hoisted full main and unrolled the working jib. We’d designed the sial plan to provide really easy handling and plenty of area for lighter breezes, common in her home port in western Long Island Sound, so the six knots true wind was a perfect test bed. Dialing in the sail trim and sheet positions, we quickly found WISP’s groove, and soon were sailing upwind at about 26 degrees apparent and boat speed of 5.9 knots—calling that a win! After trying a couple of tacks we cracked off to a beam reach and unrolled the MPS, and speed jumped to 8 knots in 8 knots true.
These few minutes of sailing would be all her designer would experience, as a tropical depression rolled through the next day, and by the following Monday, she was headed south and west to her owner’s mooring in western Connecticut. But before she shoved off, we were blessed with a gorgeous Saturday afternoon photo-shoot opportunity on the tail-end of the storm, with strong breezes and priceless clouds to form a backdrop to the Camden Hills as master marine photographer Alison Langley plied her craft. Here are a few of the gems she captured—enjoy!

Factors Affecting Cost
Buying a yacht in Russia is a rather time-consuming and lengthy process that requires the participation of professional yacht brokers. Depending on the condition of the vessel, the year of manufacture, the quality of its equipment, class and size, the acquisition cost can vary greatly. There are several indicators on which the cost of buying a yacht will depend :
- Manufacturer, or shipyard - the most famous manufacturers with expensive products are concentrated mainly in European countries, and the most budget yachts are assembled in shipyards of the countries of Asia and the Middle East;
- Equipment - sometimes the internal filling is made to order, and in some cases it is standard equipment with less power, comfort, speed, etc. In this regard, the cost of ships even from one manufacturer can vary greatly;
- Ship design;
- The age of the yacht.
Also, sailing yachts for sale in Russia cost the buyer less than similar motor lengths, but yachts with a history do not always cost less than recently launched ones. Often, the previous owners are engaged in the modernization of the vessel, installing expensive additional equipment on it or customizing the yacht - in this case, the price for it increases significantly. And sailing yachts often participate in regattas, where they can take prizes and eventually acquire a name - this also leads to a rise in the cost of the vessel.
Note that the cost of a yacht in Russia will be significantly different depending on the length of the vessel. You can always check the final cost of the vessel with a yacht broker, and since this market is very lively, the price can change even during the time during which you pick up a yacht.
You can find out the price of the selected vessel and its technical parameters in our catalog, and you can leave a request for purchase directly on the website, online. To choose a yacht for purchase , you can use the help of our broker for the sale of yachts - our specialists are in collaboration with their colleagues around the world to be able to cover the entire market.
